Receiving feedback is an important leadership skill that we can all develop, and it’s not just up to managers to give it – it’s something we all can and should do more of (and ask for!) and improve our skills in doing so. In this rebroadcast episode of the TalentGrow show with Halelly Azulay, Sheila Heen, CEO of Triad Consulting and best-selling author of Thanks for the Feedback and Difficult Conversations, shares some of her best insights on the art and science of receiving feedback. She explains what the three different kinds of feedback are (including why we need all three, but different amounts of each at different times), what the three kinds of triggered reactions we can have from feedback are, and the best way to receive vague or negative criticism. She also gives a fantastic (and highly actionable!) tip on how to ask for feedback: she warns of a common pitfall and offers a smarter way of asking that not only makes the other person more comfortable but helps to ensure that the ensuing feedback will be relevant and useful. This is an excellent episode for improving your communications skills as well as your inner-processing and emotional clarity. Listen and please share with others! A mistake many busy leaders make is to just focus on getting the work done. They fall into the role of task master and interact with their team members on a task-basis only. Your workplace interactions with your employees should be about more than just work tasks. The more that your team members feel like you care to see and know them as humans (not just workers), the more they feel a brain-based need to reciprocate that same care and attention. Caring, vulnerability, curiosity, kindness, and caring build trust. In this solo episode of the TalentGrow Show, Halelly shares a personal story from a recent workshop in which learning this lesson deeply moved the participants and generated insights and commitments to change. She discusses why you should increase your intimacy with your team members – to know them better – and how to get started (plus what NOT to do). While we take a vacation, we’re rebroadcasting a few of our favorite episodes from the archives of the earlier years of the show. This one was originally broadcast as episode 15. Enjoy! All of us are both leaders and followers. While we often focus on how to lead, author, speaker, workshop presenter and innovative thinker Ira Chaleff has focused his career on the beneficial use of power between those who are leading and those who are following in any given situation. Ira chatted with TalentGrow Show host, Halelly Azulay, about ways in which we can all become more courageous followers and why there are times when we should all choose the path of intelligent disobedience. Taken from the lexicon of guide dog training, Ira introduces the term Intelligent Disobedience to fit our model of leadership and followership in organizations, societies, and families. Based on his latest book of the same name, Ira talks about when we should feel the responsibility – even the obligation – to speak up and push back to those in power, because it is the right thing to do and it helps our leaders avoid big, possibly hurtful, mistakes. And Halelly and Ira discuss the important ways in which, as leaders, we can create the kinds of cultures that supports courageous followership. Her books, workshops and retreats build on her 20+ years of professional experience in communication and leadership development in corporate, government, nonprofit and academic organizations. Halelly is the president of TalentGrow LLC, a consulting company she founded in 2006 to develop leaders and teams, especially for enterprises experiencing explosive growth or expansion. TalentGrow specializes in people leadership skills, which include communication skills, teambuilding, coaching, and emotional intelligence. TalentGrow works with all organizational levels, including C-level leaders, frontline managers, and individual contributors. Halelly is a sought after speaker at conferences and meetings and is a contributing author to numerous books, articles and blogs. She is described as a “Leadership Development Guru” by TD Magazine. Halelly publishes a blog and a weekly leadership podcast called The TalentGrow Show to develop leaders that people want to follow. In her conversation with us, Halelly describes the reasons why most people leave companies and how this can be avoided through leadership development and thinking outside the box. She shares valuable insights from her book Employee Development on a Shoestring and provides powerful proof that improving your leadership skills doesn't have to cost a lot of money. We explore the impact of mentorship and volunteerism and how these two strategies used properly are far more beneficial than sending your employees to a training course. We also discuss what to do when a manager or leader in your organization is not ‘getting it' despite your best efforts. Want to further enhance your effectiveness as a leader and develop a culture of trust? Start by asking for feedback from the people around you. Find out what you are doing well, and what you can do differently to be a better leader and manager. Then offer the same feedback to others using a 5:1 ratio of positive feedback to constructive feedback. These are just a few of the valuable insights that Halelly offers you as you listen to this episode. Key Takeaways Most people leave jobs because they're leaving a non-supportive manager. Think outside the classroom. Be strategic vs goal oriented. Seek feedback: (1) “What's one thing that I'm doing well?” (2) "What's one thing that I could do differently that would make me even more effective?" DO NOT serve the feedback sandwich. People are usually afraid of feedback because of poorly delivered feedback, manipulative feedback or overdue feedback that's been hoarded up. Feedback should be as close to in the moment as possible. If it's constructive feedback it should be privately delivered, and it should be given in isolation of other feedback. Catch people doing things well without the “but”. Create an imbalance between positive and negative interactions such that the positive far outweighs the negative ones. Too often, high-performers are promoted to a higher position in a company and then left to their own devices to navigate the transition. What do you need to know to succeed at the next level? In this episode of The TalentGrow Show, Halelly brings back her first-ever guest on the show, author and executive coach Scott Eblin, to share insights from the newly revised 3rd edition of his best-selling book, The Next Level: What Insiders Know About Executive Success. He believes that there are three leadership imperatives that are critical to success: manage yourself, leverage your team, and engage your colleagues. Listen to discover the meaning of these imperatives while also learning about leadership presence, the importance of being humble and vulnerable with your team, and why finding a ‘work-life balance’ isn’t necessarily the right goal to set your sights on!
