“What if you quit?”This is a question I ask many of my clients during 1:1 coaching sessions. It usually branches from our initial conversation of the “Maybe” game that they've been playing. The “Maybe” game is probably one of the worst games that business owners play with themselves in the back of their heads….You've probably played it before, you just didn't know it had a name.“Maybe I should be more patient.”“Maybe it's never going to work.”“Maybe I should pivot into a different direction.”“Maybe I should just quit altogether.”If you've felt any part of the “Maybe” game before, you are in good company.I invited my client, Sarah Waggoner, both a successful Etsy Seller and Etsy Seller coach, to the podcast today to chat more about this “part of the process' ' in both of our businesses. We have both doubted many twists and turns in our businesses before. She and I are ready to chat about the challenges, successes, and feelings around these fluid movements in our businesses. In this episode of the podcast, we'll chat more about how you'll know that it's time to quit, pivot, or stay the course as a business owner. If you've been playing the “Maybe” game more than you'd like, then this episode is for you! Learn More About Sarah:Sarah owns Heartland Lettering, a product business selling on Etsy and Amazon. She also teaches Etsy sellers how to get more sales on Etsy simply and efficiently. You can find her on Instagram or in her free Etsy seller Facebook groupYou'll Learn:Why it might be important to question the entire “thing” that you are feeling unsure of in your business, instead of just making micro-changes How just because something isn't working, doesn't always mean it's time to quitWhy if you're someone that truly wants to run a successful business, that is enough of a qualification to be successfulHow as a business owner you need to identify the actual reality of running a businessFeatured on today's episode: Work with me in 2023! As humans, we LOVE overcomplicating things for no reason. Many business owners crave ease, flow, and simplicity, yet they still fall into the trap of overcomplicating things. It's almost as if when showing up in your business comes easily to you, and clients are drawn to you just by your personality shining through, it somehow feels wrong. Most of us were raised in a world where we were told things like "you should work hard for your money, nobody likes their job, but you need to pay bills." And so, subconsciously, you make things difficult for yourself. You try new strategies, new coaches, and new programs, pushing yourself to a point where your business no longer brings you happiness. You start procrastinating, feeling resentful towards your clients, experiencing burnout—misaligned in one word.As you can see, today's podcast episode is going to be a spicy one. But my intention is not to rip you to pieces; it's to bring awareness to why you may be feeling so misaligned right now. Join me as I talk about 3 reasons why you are overcomplicating things in your business, how to stop it, and instead start operating from a place that feels good to you and aligns with your CEO archetype.Topics covered on Overcomplicating Things in Your Business: When do we most often tend to overcomplicate things in businessHow did my client achieve success by embracing her authentic selfWhat happens when you start replicating someone else's style instead of embracing your own uniquenessHow to break free from the cycle of making things more difficult for yourselfWhy do I adapt my approach to each of my clients individuallySimplistic strategies that work for you as a human and your CEO archetypeThis is why I call to my 1:1 packages as 'mentorship'The problem of constantly working with a coach or enrolling into another programYou don't have to overcomplicate things in your business to be successfulHow do I differentiate my coaching style from other coaches out thereConnect with me on Instagram @_rebeccahaydon_. In this episode, you'll also hear:One of the biggest myths about making money as a Christian writerHow starting a podcast directly benefits your writing careerWhy many podcasts never make it past 10 episodes – and how to avoid falling into the same trapWhat not to do if you want your podcast to be successfulHow to get direct access to Carey Green's FREE podcasting course (no email address required!)Be sure to read all the way to the end to grab that direct link!As a Christian writer, you have the opportunity to profoundly impact lives by sharing your faith and values with the world. But did you know that you could also have a lucrative side hustle or make a living doing what you love? It's true. And that's what this Published and Paid series is all about – getting you from where you are right now to where you want to be. And a big part of that is learning to think outside of the box. After all, it's your current thinking that has us where you are. So if you want to get to the next level, you have to go to the next level in your thinking. If you haven't already, go back and check out the previous Published and Paid episodes, because each one is jam-packed with information that will help you change your thinking so you can make more money from your writing, make an impact that lasts, and reach more people. Remember, having disposable income is important. As Christians, we're called to love our neighbors as ourselves, and that means going the extra mile to help those in need. Yes, sometimes that will be a spiritual need, but many times it's a material need. And let's be honest, it's hard to help others when you're barely scraping by yourself. But what you could do if you had more income at your disposal? Perhaps you could donate more money to causes that help those in need. Or you could free up some of your time to help bring more awareness to important issues and promote compassion and justice. When you have more disposable income, you have greater ability to be a blessing to others and a light in the world. Isn't that something we should all be passionate about? Share Your Work While You Hone Your SkillsOne of the biggest myths about making money as a Christian writer is that you have to find a traditional publishing deal. But – while there are certainly benefits to going the traditional publishing route – there are many other ways to make money as a Christian writer without waiting for someone else's approval. One of those ways is starting a podcast of your own. Podcasting offers a unique opportunity to share your work with the world while you hone your skills as a public speaker and teacher. Every time you sit down to record an episode, you force yourself to articulate your thoughts in a clear and concise manner. And that's important, because being a good writer isn't just about stringing together a few sentences and hoping for the best – it's a craft that requires time, effort, and practice to perfect. Preparing for each podcast episode allows you to research a topic in-depth and learn more about your craft at the same time. As you begin to build an audience, you'll also find yourself learning how to better communicate with others and explain your work in an interesting and engaging way. As a result, you'll end up producing higher-quality writing and developing a stronger understanding of your field. Benefits of Starting a PodcastBy investing time in a podcast and creating a quality show, you open up a world of possibilities for your writing career. Starting a podcast is a great way to:Build a platform and an audience for your work as a Christian author. By hosting your own podcast, you can reach a wide range of listeners who might not otherwise have had the chance to hear your message. Connect with other writers and thinkers in the Christian community. Through regular guest appearances and interviews, you can create valuable relationships that may lead to new opportunities down the road. Build authority and credibility. Podcasters are often seen as experts in their field, because they're sharing insights and knowledge with their listeners on a regular basis. If you've written a book on Christian leadership, for example, you could start a podcast about the leadership principles of Jesus. Then you could share your insights with your audience and invite other leaders that you respect and admire to join you on the show. As your audience continues to grow, and you get better at interviewing and speaking with each episode, you'll gain more credibility and authority in your field. So if you're looking to establish yourself as an expert, starting a podcast is a great way to do it. But is starting a podcast really worth the time and effort? After all, there are so many podcasts out there on all kinds of topics. That's true, but here's a little secret about the podcasting world: while the market may appear overcrowded, most podcasters simply aren't consistent enough. It's not uncommon for a show to fizzle out after a few episodes, or for a podcaster to go inactive. If you are dedicated to consistently creating quality content, you will quickly distinguish yourself from the competition and capture your audience. For the committed, podcasting is no longer a niche hobby – it's a viable way to build a business and connect with people all over the world. So if you're ready to put in the work, there's no reason you can't be successful. Starting a Podcast: What Not To DoAll of that said, there are some things you need to avoid if you don't want your podcast to end up in the “podcast graveyard,” so to speak. It's commonly said that many podcasts never make it past episode #10. Can you believe that? Just 10 episodes, and that podcast is in the graveyard! We don't want that to happen to you. So here are some mistakes you should avoid so you can be well on your way to launching a successful podcast.1. Don't start a podcast just to start a podcast. Amazing as podcasts are, and much as they can help your writing career, you have to approach yours in the right way. Before starting a podcast, take some time to think about your goals and your target audience: What are you hoping to achieve with your podcast? Who, specifically, are you trying to reach? How will you structure the podcast to directly or indirectly generate income? Answering these questions will help you stay focused as you move forward and, eventually, help you become profitable. It's also important to consider what sets your podcast apart from the millions of other shows out there. What unique perspective do you bring to the table? How can you add value for your listeners? Keep these things in mind as you develop your show, and make sure you've answered them all before you hit “Record.”2. Don't try to do everything yourself. As a content creator, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking you have to do everything yourself. After all, you're the one with the vision and the passion, so it seems obvious that you should be in charge of bringing the project to life. However – speaking from personal experience – when you don't get help, it can lead to burnout and frustration. When you try to take on too much, ending up in the podcast graveyard is almost inevitable. So instead of trying to do everything yourself, delegate tasks to others who can help lighten the load. This will allow you to focus on what you do best: creating great content. By building a team of people who share your vision, you'll be able to create something that's truly special – and that wouldn't have been possible if you were working alone. And believe it or not, this doesn't have to break the bank. 3. Don't be afraid to promote your podcast. If you want people to listen to your show, you have to let them know that it exists! This means promoting your episode across all your social media channels and to your email list, and also being a guest on other podcasts and encouraging your listeners to leave reviews. But a word of caution: don't spam people with incessant advertising, make false promises, or overhype your content. Instead, the point is to be creative in your promotion and to measure your results so you can adjust your approach as needed. That's the best way to effectively promote your podcast and build a loyal audience.4. Don't give up after the first few episodes. As mentioned above, many podcast hosts aren't dedicated or consistent enough and often give up quickly. Do you know why that is? It's because starting a podcast and keeping it going isn't easy. It may look easy, but it's work. Too many hosts give up because they don't see results immediately and they conclude that their time and energy was wasted. But the truth is that it takes time and persistence to build anything that lasts – including a successful podcast. The key is to focus on persistence and quality. Keep producing informative, entertaining content, and you will eventually start to see the results. 5. Don't forget to pray. Ask God to guide you in your effort all the way from the very beginning. Even as you're just starting to think about what you want your podcast to be, ask Him to help you to reach people who will appreciate your work. With persistence and prayer, you can make your podcast successful. And over time, you will start to see your podcast grow in popularity as more and more people find it and subscribe. FREE Step-by-Step Course: How To PodcastBy now, you should be starting to see that you can use the gifts God has given you to share your message in a variety of ways. There are many differences in health and wellness goals that exist between people of different socio-economic backgrounds. Health coaching is a process that supports someone's health and wellness goals, but not everyone gets the same amount of support due to varying levels of income, education, access to resources (e.g. healthy food), etc. And this lack of support can result in poorer health outcomes for those who are already disadvantaged. In this episode, I speak with Melissa Arthur. We talk about her experience working as a health coach in a primary care setting. What outside factors made it harder for patients to be successfulHow to successfully engage with patients given their potential limited resourcesAdvice for those interested in a career as a health coach. If you found value in this episode, please RATE & REVIEW! I'm often asked if there are patterns I see from the people I have worked with and the entrepreneurs I've had the privilege of knowing over the past decade. And the truth is, the answer is 100% YES!In this solo episode I walk through six surprising habits of six figure entrepreneurs and discuss:Why looking outside of yourself will not get you to where you want to be in your business journey The simple but BIG decision you HAVE to make if you want to be successfulHow it's possible to see profits without personal pressure One of the most important things you can do if you want to get your business from zero to six figures...and the best part? In this episode we discuss how to deal with never feeling like you’re “enough,” show you how to overcome the insidious trap of "people pleasing,” look at the most effective treatments for OCD, panic attacks, anxiety and stress, discover the dangers of “toxic perfectionism” and how it might be holding you back, tell you why “should” is a dangerous word, and much more with our guest Taylor Newendorp. Taylor Newendorp is the founder and president of Chicago Counseling Center and specializes in the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Perfectionism, and Anxiety Disorders. He was worked as a practicing therapist for many years and completed the International OCD Foundation's Behavioral Therapy Training Institute Taylor is the author of The Perfectionism Workbook: Proven Strategies to Break Free from Perfectionism and Achieve Your Goals. What is the myth of perfection and how does it impact your life? You are more likely to grow, thrive, and succeed once you acknowledge and accept your weaknessesThe Five Tendencies of Toxic PerfectionismWhat is the root cause behind the “people pleasing” tendency? Perfectionism can often be genetically pre-disposed if your family has a history of OCD or anxietyPeople pleasing is rooted in the idea that for you to be loved you have to achieve and be successfulHow much of what you’re doing is is because you WANT to or because you feel like you HAVE TO in order to have other people like you? What activities are you doing that you do solely for the approval of others? Would you do them for their own sake?Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset and how that impacts perfectionist tendencies Do you feel a feeling of discontent? No matter what you do, no matter what you achieve, do you feel like it’s never enough? Do you keep pushing yourself harder and harder causing stress and anxiety for yourself? How do you deal with self criticism and negative self talk? What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and how does it work?Exposure and response prevention is a highly effective solution to OCD, panic attacks, anxiety disorders, etc Learn and familiarize yourself with the cognitive distortions that are out there and see how they are playing out in your head Understand the connection between thoughts and feelings and how that might be influencing how you’re behavingOne question you can use to challenge your negative thoughts - if you had to stand up in a court of law and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this thought is 100% true would it hold up? When you feel something uncomfortable - avoidance and distraction are the two most common strategies for avoiding discomfortThe more you avoid something the more you increase your anxiety around that fear. The fear grows larger and larger in your brain. The more you face and spend time with your fears, your anxiety dissipates. Dig into and understand the triggers that make you uncomfortable and continually face them to build tolerance and resistance to them Exposure and response therapy creates new neural pathways that reduce anxiety over timeWhat is the relationship between perfectionism and OCD?A lot of people with OCD engage in compulsive behaviors to get a sense that things feel “just right"You should make your goals specific, measurable, and meaningful Mindfulness at its core is about observing yourself, observing others, without attaching judgement to it Learn more about your ad choices.
