Britt Gaudio repeatedly finds herself in high-intensity roles where she feels overworked, unsafe, and ultimately burns out. With an incredible capacity to handle stress and turn dysfunctional chaos into efficient, effective systems, Britt has made a career as an Operations Executive in the GTA. She has observed a pattern in herself of leaving unhealthy environments, only to find herself back in another one. In this episode, she explores this pattern in herself and what she can do to change the cycle.    Exploring Kailea and Britt's shared experience working for a non-profit in Toronto – both the incredible opportunities they were given, and the lasting effects of working in a burnout culture at an impressionable age.  How can we have enough confidence to say “this is too much for me” when your work culture breeds fear of being inadequate, lazy, or not pulling your weight? If company leaders don't set limits to protect us, how do we protect ourselves? What makes it challenging to say, “this is my limit” or “this is what I need”? Why do we tend to say, “the problem must be me” vs. trusting that our needs are valid?   What childhood patterns make us more susceptible to this and what happens when people repeatedly value our ability to “get the job done, period?” Exploring the benefits of having high frustration tolerance, while also examining how it puts us at high risk for overworking/burnout. Britt's new venture creating work on her own terms and investing fully in herself, and how being a parent gave her the push she needed to take this leap. How Culture Works in Fintech M&A World - Podcast with Alex Cross Show Notes: Alex got his bearing around culture when he was in the military. Over the years during his M&A stint, he encountered a lot of failures that prompted him to think hard and reflect on the cultural question. Culture is not about the values that get posted on the walls, it is not about what the CEO or the founder says about their companies, it is not about the annual employee assessment that gets sent out, culture is about “what are the ways of working, how do people work on a day to day basis, and what are the common strings that people can pull from that”. There is a lack of respect for the complexity of culture. Leaders think that it is an HR thing to deal with. In reality, it is a leadership thing. Alex shares examples from the eCommerce and financial world where culture played an important role especially around the way sales organizations integrated, how the culture was different, and what sort of challenges came up? In M&A integration, there is a tendency to make a lot of promises upfront. Unfortunately, many of them cannot be kept and it destroys trust. The biggest mistake companies make is not conducting a cultural assessment during due diligence not just about the target company but also, about themselves. By knowing yourself better through self-assessment, you can create better empathy. Alex Cross is an Operations Executive with a track record of creating a vision, leading operational strategy, and producing cross-functional insights for executives to maximize efficiency while inspiring cultural change to transform businesses. As a pragmatic, detail-oriented, and data-driven problem-solver who builds consensus, Alex has successfully introduced disciplines to track objectives against measurable results and led people to meet commitments. He thrives in fast-paced environments and possesses the courage to kickstart change using a proven playbook to achieve strategic goals. ------- Hosted by Anirvan Sen, CEO of Fifth Chrome, and Anahita Sen, Co-Facilitator of Fifth Chrome Podcasts ------- This interview is part of a series run by Fifth Chrome, an business strategy advisory, and training company specializing in M&A, Integration, and Business Transformations. ------- Books mentioned: • Primal Leadership – Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis, Annie McKee • Meditations – Marcus Aurelius, Gregory Hays • Good to Great – Jim Collins

Would you give up your life and put everything on the line for your country? If you were plucked off the street and asked to serve as a secret agent overseas during wartime, would you say yes? These are the decisions that The Special Operations Executive agents had to come to terms with. SOE was formed in 1940, and the organisation's F section sent more than four hundred agents into France. But while some are widely known – others have had their stories largely overlooked. In her new book ‘Mission France' Dr Kate Vigurs uncovers the stories of the 39 female agents of SOE. In this episode we discover the importance of shedding light on the overlooked heroes of our stories, we find out how the threat of that ‘next knock on the door' can build suspense and anxiety in your writing, and we examine the topic of motivation - how a character's personality might fundamentally change when left with no choice. The Empire Club of Canada Presents: Remembrance Day Reflection: The Story of the World War 2 SPECIAL OPERATIONS EXECUTIVE (SOE) Today, hundreds of thousands of young people are responding to a global crisis - that of climate change and ecological collapse. In the 1930s, the world also faced a global crisis - the rise of militant imperialist and racist ideologies, in particular the rise of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan. Then, in World War 2, in the 1940s, hundreds of young men and women – including Canadians - became secret underground agents and risked their lives to defend freedom in Europe and in the world from Nazi racism and tyranny. They were parachuted into Nazi-occupied territory or ferried in by secret aircraft or boats. They had to move, disguised, and always hunted in hostile villages, towns, and cities. They had to trust people they had never met. Sometimes their trust was betrayed. Discovery meant hideous torture and almost certain death. Their mission was to link up with resistance groups in occupied countries – in the beginning above all in France – and supply these groups with money, weapons, explosives, radios and communications, and leadership and guidance. The aim was to wreck Nazi communications and transport links and to block movements of war material to Nazi Germany and frustrate and block the movement of German troops and, in particular, the movement of the dreaded Panzer – or armored – Divisions. So, they blew up railway tracks, railway yards, and trains, sabotaged canals and munitions factories, destroyed telephone lines and telegraph lines, and truck convoys. And, everywhere, they were hunted in a deadly non-stop game of cat and mouse. This is the story we will tell – the story of the Special Operations Executive – the SOE – and Camp X in Whitby-Oshawa, one of its key training camps – and of the young men and women who sacrificed their lives for a future of freedom. SOE became the model for the CIA and the inspiration for many post-war writers including Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. On this week's MEAT+POULTRY Podcast, our Operations Executive of the Year, Walt Shafer, discusses some of the details of his latest success as chief operations officer at Costco owned Lincoln Premium Poultry in Fremont, Neb., Costco's exclusive and fully integrated chicken supplier. Shafer begins with his preference to be on the floor of the facility as a plant manager and moves through his ownership of a chicken farm in Virginia and how that experience helped him impart confidence to Nebraska farmers who had never grown chickens. Shafer also talks about the first employee he hired, Jessica Kolterman, and the ways her expertise played a crucial role in navigating the politics necessary for the needed approvals on the Lincoln Premium project. Finally, we get a glimpse of the early vision of Lincoln Premium Poultry and how a partnership with Marel allowed that vision to come to fruition. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/meatpoultry-podcast/message

This weeks episode focuses on confidence as an apprentice. For most, the idea of joining a business is both exciting and daunting at the same time. Us apprentices can probably all remember our first day, our first meeting, our first mistake and most importantly building up the courage to point out our colleagues mistakes. It's never easy being one of the youngest members of a team, but that's mainly just because we lack confidence. This quickly changes though! One apprentice who can agree, is William Laven, a graduate level 3 Business and Admin Apprentice, now Operations Executive at Publics Media. William suffers from dyslexia and a stammer, which he says he used to really struggle with, particularly at school but also in job interviews. However, William has not let that hold him back and throughout his apprenticeship has gained the confidence he needs to be extremely successful, winning awards and even publicly speaking about apprenticeships and his stammer. William has a truly inspirational story, so click the play button and take a listen!

In this episode, Maria and Kim discuss:How empathy at senior levels of leadership drives operational performance. Why being curious as a key leadership success factor. A three phase approach to running empathetic meetings where everyone can thrive and, yes, work can actually move forward.  Key Takeaways:Clear, deliberate, constructive feedback is empathetic. Be detailed in your praise of your coworkers and employees. By giving those specifics, those actions and results can be replicated. Getting curious allows you to take advantage of the unique and interesting insights and varying perspectives of your team and those around you. But without listening and being honestly interested in what someone else is saying, you will miss these insights. The real key in having people shift internally, in their mindset, or in their belief system is to help them gain self-generated insight.  "The objective is to give deliberate praise and very specific praise so people can repeat that behavior going forward. We want to be really clear, as leaders, of what we want people to do more of and what we want them to do less. That requires us to be intentional, mindful, and observant in order to really deliver that in a way that is truly trying to develop and grow an individual that, again, ends up bringing good results to the organization." —  Kim Bohr About Kim Bohr:  Kim Bohr is a Business Growth Strategist, Operations Executive, and Speaker & Author  Kim Bohr is COO of Waldron, Inc. and Founder of The Innovare Group, a company renowned for diagnosing and repairing organizational and leadership disconnects.
