We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageIs preparation overrated, or do we just overvalue it? Join me as we explore the compelling philosophy of "Ready, Fire, Aim" in this Mojo Minute. Drawing from the wisdom of Jason Selk and Olympic gold medalist Lanny Basham, this episode challenges the conventional wisdom of endless preparation. Key Points from the Episode:We dissect the actionable insights from Selk's "10-Minute Toughness" and Basham's "With Winning in Mind," emphasizing the importance of taking action and learning through doing.Discover why taking the shot can be more effective than endlessly aiming, and how this mindset can transform your approach to both personal and professional goals. We even throw in a little historical skepticism about that famous Abraham Lincoln quote on sharpening axes. If you're ready to break free from the paralysis of over-preparation and start hitting your bullseyes, this episode is your catalyst for change. Don't miss out on the actionable wisdom from two masters of mental resilience and elite performance!Other resources: More goodnessGet your FREE Academy Review here!Get our top book recommendations listGet new podcast episodes dropped into your email box easilyWant to leave a review? Mental Management coaches Troy Bassham and Heather Sumlin have been doing the "With Winning in Mind" podcast for almost two years and from time to time we take questions from viewers. Here are the questions we answer: From Troy's book Attainment - One of the principles is that elite performers work on all three areas of performance, others focus only on their subconsious ability. How do I get out of my own head to start working on my conscious and Self-Image? I found that most people don't like to talk about success and they don't want to hear about my success. How do I discover how it is that I can continue build good friends and people around me while getting a getting a good imprint on my Self-Image and not sound cocky? You have talked a lot about the Performance Analysis Journal I decided to get one and I am struggling in two areas - first is my percentage of time I ran my mental system and my technical system correctly. How strictly should I be keeping up with that and is it a percentage of feel? Second - Can you help me to come up with a way to formulate my what I learned today and what I did well today statements? Elite performers focus on what they should do, others focused on what happened. How do I keep myself from feeling like I'm focusing on what I think should have happened? I've been runner up the last 5 years in my competition and I'm started to get defeated. I love my sport but I just don't know if I can win the big one. How can I stay motivated? Or is it time for me to retire? Want to learn more from Troy and Heather? When it comes to our competitive mindset, we are often tempted to focus on our negative outcomes. We dwell on our mistakes, overanalyze our bad runs, and remember our shortcomings more than we should. When we think negatively about ourselves, this only reinforces a negative self image. On this episode, I'm sharing some fundamental beliefs about the self image from author Lanny Bassham of With Winning in Mind, and how his beliefs on personal development can be applied to your training career. OPTIMIZE with Brian Johnson | More Wisdom in Less Time

You Don't Rise to the Occasion, You Sink to…  Continuing our tour through Brian Cain's mental toughness fables, let's talk about another Big Idea from The 10 Pillars of Mental Performance Mastery.   Remember: Brian has coached an INCREDIBLE number of SUPER-ELITE athletes and coaches. Eight UFC Champions. Four Cy Young Winners. MVPs. Olympians, etc, etc., etc.   One of the things he teaches them?   The fact that, as he puts it: “You don't rise to the occasion, you sink to your levels of training and habits.”   Here's how his guide Coach Kenny puts it in the fable.    He tells us: “‘The key is to make your habits so strong and your training so good that when you sink to your worst day, you sink to a level higher than anyone else on their best day,' Coach Kenny said. ‘It's easy to say, hard to do, and only possible if you follow the 10 pillars of mental performance mastery.'”   Then he says: “'Everyone talks about raising the roof. In reality, it's about raising your basement so that you have good bad days and are better on your bad days than most people are on their good days—because you can focus better and have better habits and a more elite mindset. It's really about being the best version of you that you have ever been. It's also about not comparing yourself to anyone else but to where you were yesterday. If you can see progress—be better today than you were yesterday and better tomorrow than you are today—and just keep going baby step by baby step, you will get where you want to be.'”   That's from a great chapter called “You Don't Rise to the Occasion; You Sink to Your Training and Habits.” There's a LOT of wisdom in there that we could talk about for an entire weekend workshop.    For now, let's focus on a few highlights and some parallel wisdom from other brilliant teachers.   First, I think of this +1 on Good Bad Days in which we talk about some wisdom from Jim Afremow's The Champion's Mind. Big Idea? Golfers like Jack Nicklaus and Rory McIlroy know it's all about “playing poorly well.” You can only do that when you have an elite mind.   Then I think of Lanny Bassham and his son Troy who wrote With Winning in Mind and Attainment. In this +1 on Average vs. Elite, we talk about the fact that AVERAGE performers practice something until they can get it right. ELITE performers, on the other hand, practice until they CAN'T GET IT WRONG.   Then there's Josh Waitzkin, the chess prodigy turned martial artist champion. In The Art of Learning, he tells us that we need to make our prior best our new baseline.   What happens when we do all that? We raise the basement.    Our highs are higher AND (!) our LOWS are HIGHER. On our worst days, we're often better than we used to be on our best days.    And that's an incredibly powerful thing.   Here's to raising our basement as we DOMINATE THE DAY and give the world all we've got, Hero.    Day 1. All in. Let's go!   P.S. Lest you think this is just a bunch of peak performance mumbo jumbo, let's remind ourselves of the ancient wisdom from one of the wisest of them all as we make sure we are building our lives on a solid foundation.

They struggle with their Self-Image. I recently read a book by Lanny Bassham called "With Winning in Mind" -- which I highly recommend --  that resonated with me -- how you talk to yourself, what you believe in, what your comfort zone is, and what makes you act like you. Happy 4th of July!  This is a replay from the vault of a 2018 interview I did with Lanny Bassham.  Here is a little about Lanny: 95% of all winning comes from the same 5% of the competitors.  What makes them different than the rest of us?  Their mental game is better than the others.  Anyone can practice a sport or hobby and develop skill at that sport, but the ones with a better mental system will always win in the end.  How does a person get a better mental game?  My guest today started out as the guy least likely to get to the Olympics as a small kid in 6th grade.  Fast forward to the 1976 Olympics where my guest, Lanny Bassham took the gold medal in small bore rifle shooting.  But it wasn't an easy road.  Lanny had previously gone to the '72 Olympics and choked in the gold medal match where he walked away confused and with a silver medal.  In the next four years he would develop his trademarked mental management system that in the past 40 years has lead many students to world championships and other victories. How do we learn about this system?  Lanny goes over the highlights from the system and his book he wrote, “With Winning in Mind” today with me.  “With Winning in Mind” is mentioned several times in previous podcasts as one of the tools that took good shooters to make them great.  This system also has been taught to special operations and Secret Service.  You'll learn today why you should value the process and not the outcome, highlight solutions and not problems and finally how to coach your kids to be winners. I looked forward to speaking with Lanny for a long time. Here are the links mentioned in the podcast: Mental Management Systems Please SUBSCRIBE! Join the Nation!

Nathan Brooks Setting up your bow and keeping it tuned during season 10.50   Nathan Brooks: Target Panic Drills Jun 21, 2019 9:14:22 AM / by Nathan Brooks   Being consistently accurate is what all bowhunters, target archers and recreational shooters desire. Unfortunately, most believe it is related to their equipment when they are struggling. And it’s just a guess but I’d venture to say that 95% of all upgrades in purchases of equipment are driven by the mentality of “it will make me better.”   Buying accuracy is something that is legitimate; you can purchase better equipment and shoot better scores by becoming more accurate. But I think the question that really needs to be asked first is: “am I as accurate with my current equipment as possible?”  Most of the time that answer is NO! But, would you use another piece of equipment more consistently which will bring more accuracy? Soul searching is always a good thing, and being completely honest with ourselves is sometimes really hard to do. Or it could be that we aren’t even sure what being completely honest with ourselves is even about when it comes to archery. From this point I could go in a number of directions with this article but I want to focus in on one area: Target Panic! Target panic is so broad, so deep and so long that it is hard to measure or quantify. Just a couple examples of questions you might ask yourself:  If I struggle to hold to my pin in the middle of the dot without systematically punching the trigger is that common?  Should I be able to aim without any urges to fire the release?  How come I struggle hanging up low under the target with my pin when I am aiming?  Why does my body involuntarily convulse at times when I am trying to shoot?  Over the years I have heard so many different problems relating to target panic that nothing surprises me when I hear of a new issue. The mind is so powerful that it will automatically take control of situations even when you are trying to control it. To me, that is the exact definition of target panic. Your subconscious mind has been trained to do something a certain way and it only knows how to do it that way unless you reprogram it.   The good news is that it can most certainly be retrained. The bad news is that it takes a serious amount of time and training to overcome. I might add that most people get worse (in terms of accuracy) before they get better. And because it is so different for every person there is no prescription that cures all symptoms. However, there are exercises and training tools that can help any archer.  Without changing any current equipment, simply draw the bow, with no intention of shooting the arrow, and just aim. By doing this exercise you will imprint in your subconscious mind that your pin can go to the middle of the target with ease. After about 3-5 seconds of aiming the pin in the middle let the bow down and rest for about 15-20 seconds. Repeat the process as many times as you can without tiring out. This is an exercise that can be done at any point, whether you do or do not have target panic.  Another great exercise to reprogram the subconscious mind is to use visualization. This will cost nothing except time. And I have found that it will it is a good way to become a great archer. I’ll walk you through how I visualize shooting an indoor round and you can apply your own methods based around the same ideas.  First, I go to a quiet room in my house, close the door and turn off the lights. By making the room dark I find it easier to let my mind see what I want it to see. Your subconscious mind doesn’t know if this is really happening or if you are using visualization so the imprint that it leaves is whatever you see happening. I begin to visualize myself shooting my bow in a tournament setting. Being very specific with all the details. I first see and feel my bow in my left hand and envision myself loading an arrow in my own detailed way. I can feel the nock of the arrow and how it snaps on the string. I then go through the process of drawing the bow into my pre-aim.  I then feel the release in my hand as it makes its way into the anchor position and I see the target through my peep sight with the pin holding dead center with just a slight amount of movement.  If feel the perfect execution as the shot fires and the follow through finishes the shot.  I repeat the shooting process in my head until the round is finished. Remember to make it very detailed. I visualize the other people shooting, the sounds going on in the room and I can feel the breeze of the air turning on. Make it real. And if you are a hunter you can visualize the perfect shot happening on a big bull elk or trophy whitetail. Remember to feel and see it all in your mind just like you want it to happen and stay focused. Don’t wander off. If you are wondering and your thoughts are drifting then you have concentration issues.  I struggle with concentration usually the first few days of trying to visualize a complete indoor round in my mind but after a few days of trying to stay focused I can complete the full round uninterrupted.  A great book on this subject is called “With Winning in Mind” by Lanny Bassham. I highly recommend it. If you are accustomed to using an index trigger finger release then I can easily suggest trying a Scott HEX (this is an instance where purchasing a new product can actually make you better). It is a hinge style release that uses a wrist strap and can be shot with one or two fingers.  I recommend using the release without a click in the travel to help reduce the anticipation of firing the shot. It is extremely adjustable in length and travel to accommodate your specific style. Most shooters using a hinge style release for their first time will need some instruction on how to set it up and shoot it correctly. Instruction is key to success. And when used over a course of several weeks you will see improvements in your ability to aim the bow and execute at the same time.   Remember: retraining the mind is not something that happens quickly. Brian Kennedy always wanted to be successful and make money. While in college he had a part-time job at an electronic store “circuit city” making an average of 5k a month. He later learned that at the time the average UCLA graduate makes 43k a year. After that Brian decided to end his college career.     Brian was in the process of becoming a stockbroker in Beverly Hills when a friend of his suggested he talk to his father who was a Manager of a Mitsubishi dealership. After weighing the risk and reward between the two opportunities, Brian started his automotive career.  For the first three months, he was averaging 10-11 cars per month making between $4000-5100 each month. Brian wasn’t ok with his results. He’s manager started to coach him on what to say and how to overcome objections. By implementing the instructions word for word, he sold 24.5 cars and made $10,700 the remaining 23 days of that month   Brian believes that the biggest mistake that people make in the automotive industry is hanging out with people who sell 6 cars a month and who doesn’t have the desire to achieve more. You must be intentional about finding people better than you and learning from them. Also by being in Automotive management for the last 15 years, Brian adopted the mindset that you have to help your team make money and in turn, you will make money. Tune in with us as Brian Kennedy shares how important it is as a manager to support and pour to your team. OPTIMIZE with Brian Johnson | More Wisdom in Less Time

In our last +1, we talked about Zen in the Art of Spartan Spear Throwing and the recent installation of a spear throw setup in our backyard, complete with bails of hay, etc. (Yes, we’re ALL IN at the Johnson house.)   How about YOU? Do you have a deep commitment to mastery in your life?    Remember: Even the most mundane practices can be a portal into enlightenOptimizement.    So…    I’m in my backyard throwing my spear and thinking about Steven Pressfield’s wisdom. As I had fun walking back and forth covering the 30 feet between the hay bales and my starting point, I was also thinking about some Lanny and Troy Bassham wisdom.   As we’ve discussed, Lanny wrote a book called With Winning in Mind. Troy wrote a book called Attainment. We briefly talked about some of their wisdom on how average vs. elite performers practice in our +1 on why Buddha kept on meditating after his enlightenment.    Short story: Lanny and Troy tell us that AVERAGE performers practice something until they can get it right. ELITE performers, on the other hand, practice until they CAN’T GET IT WRONG.   That’s how to roll.    And that’s worth a repeat: AVERAGE performers practice something until they can get it right. ELITE performers, on the other hand, practice until they CAN’T GET IT WRONG.   So… Today’s +1.   How are YOU approaching your life and the most salient aspects of it?   Trying to get it right? Or working so hard you can’t get it wrong?   Let’s avoid the “Meh, I’m good enough” zone of competence as we chase excellence.   Let’s go from average to elite to our optimus best.   Then let’s keep going.

95% of all winning comes from the same 5% of the competitors. But it wasn’t an easy road.  Lanny had previously gone to the ’72 Olympics and choked in the gold medal match where he walked away confused and with a silver medal. You’ll learn today why you should value the process and not the outcome, highlight solutions and not problems and finally how to coach your kids to be winners. I looked forward to speaking with Lanny for a long time. Here are the links mentioned in the podcast: Mental Management Systems Please SUBSCRIBE! Join the Nation!

How To Change Your Imprints In 3 Easy Ways

Lanny Bassham said in his book, With Winning In Mind, “You change it through imprinting.” Lanny Bassham is an Olympic gold-winning 50mm shooting champion. He now teaches others how to improve their mindset so they can become unstoppable. In his book, With Winning in mind, I want to share three ideas that can help you change your own imprint to become your personal best. Here are my three ideas 1. Don’t let the status of other people, things, objects dictate how you see yourself. I was recently at the Whitehouse and I was expecting the tour to be elite, amazing, and to be in awe. The tour was good but it made me realize that the Whitehouse is nothing more than just well a house that is white. I was expecting it to make an impact on my life but in reality it just ok. My biggest take away is that we give too much energy to other things than ourselves. If you want to become a better salesperson, parent, student, CEO, athlete, or firefighter you need to invest that energy back into yourself. 2. Do what you want to do! In Washington DC each spring they have cherry blossom trees that bloom. It's an amazing sight to see. People from around the world come to visit and witness this spectacle. My family and I wanted to see the trees but our extended family who lives there told us not too because it was going to be too busy, too hot, you won’t get an uber back to the hotel, there is nothing to eat down there, the George Washington monument is under construction, and the bantering kept on. As you can see people have their own ideas how to live or see the cherry blossoms. We didn’t listen and went anyways it was an amazing time. The trees were in full bloom, the weather was perfect, and yes there were clouds of people but it was manageable. The message is if you want to do “x” do “x”. Feed yourself first, give yourself the oxygen first, and lastly do you first! 3. That's Like Me! Lanny Bassham states in his book that during his mental visualization he would say multiple times during his mental walkthroughs, that's like me. This was a powerful statement because if you want to be the best teacher, seller, or assistant you need to get in an alignment of what you need to become to be that type of person. For Lanny he wanted to shoot a perfect game of 400 because of his visualization and his statement of, that's like me, he was able to do that and become that. For you, your goal or objective might be different but the phrase is the same. To be your best, to create an amazing self-image you need to remind yourself that's like me. As a bonus, if you're starting a diet or on a diet and you fall prey to a sweet treat before you shove it in your mouth say, that's like me. If you do that you will feel guilty and throw away that sweet treat for a better snack. Mind hacks can make the difference give it a try. To change your imprint is not easy but easy is for the untrained by staying current with Jake Nawrocki and Operation Self Rest you better believe you will have more reassures, stories, and ideas to keep yourself at the best it can become. Keep on being Awesome and if for some odd reason you don’t feel awesome make sure you remind yourself the best way you can. Gratitude to you my friend, Jake

How do you go from being a computer playing kid to number 2 at a National Championship?  My guest today is Hwansik Kim, a 29 student raised in S. Korea.  Hwansik or “Chic” as his friends call him picked up a real firearm only four years ago and started competing a year later.  Today, he is sitting back after a great year taking 2nd at Optics Nationals and 5th at Iron Sight Nationals.  What kind of drive and determination does it take to rise to that level? Chic also shoots for Walther Arms as a sponsored shooter in addition to being a full time student.  One thing I learned about Chic was how devoted to God and his faith he is after surviving a horrific car crash which changed his life.  Chic spends hours a day not only practicing but studying videos of athletes from a variety of sports just to pick up their techniques for success. In this episode you'll learn how you can dry practice WITHOUT a gun.  Why gripping the pistol as hard as you can will lead to predictable shots.  And finally, how to occupy your mind to control anxiety and emotion during a match. Chic is by far one of the most dedicated competitors I've interviewed. He and his firm focus exclusively on helping people get a Soft Divorce® – because divorce doesn’t have to be so hard®.Dana has built his business on the foundation of focusing on problem resolution and customer satisfaction. His firm does not have billing requirements, but customer satisfaction requirements. But how can a law firm be profitable if its main focus is on satisfaction? Spoiler alert: Happy and satisfied clients are more than willing to trade their problems for money!Dana went to law school not with the intent of becoming an attorney, but as the completion of his business training. He wanted to know what the lawyers knew so he can be more successful as a business person.Being part of business coaching programs and constantly reading business and mindset books no doubt contributed to Dana’s success. His firm already passed the $1,000,000 gross revenue/year milestone with even higher goals in sight.“Shifting your mindset” is an overused term in the business community, but to build a successful business you really have to act as the CEO of your firm and not just as a practicing attorney. In practical terms, a CEO makes decisions about the systems and procedures which are the foundation of a business, and to be able to act as a CEO you really need to have a different mindset.  When it comes to marketing, many attorneys will tell you that a law firm is usually built on referrals. But this doesn’t mean that you can sit back and just wait for clients to show up at your doorstep. Dana believes that you can teach and incentivize your clients to refer you more work. Some call this “tuning on the referral machine”. You are not necessarily left at the mercy of clients to send you work, but you can actively improve your referral rate through incentives, and often just by asking. In addition to encouraging referrals, Dana actively spreads his idea of Soft Divorce® through radio shows and TV appearances. Even though Dana does not impose billing requirements on his associates, running a successful firm does require closely managing the financial aspect of the business. Dana looks at cash flow reports almost daily, reviews net income and profitability indicators frequently and compares them to his set goals, just as a CEO of a large corporation would.Book recommendations:•    Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In – by Roger Fisher, William L Ury and Bruce Patton•    Think and Grow Rich – by Napoleon Hill•    With Winning in Mind – by Lanny Bassham
