Rooting into care, building safety, creating positive emotional experiences, leaning into transition time, and getting curious about the wisdom of our resistance. All so we can pull away from the cycles of avoidance, to adrenaline-and-deadline-fueled push, to crash and burnout, only for that cycle to repeat. Avoidance is asking to be met with support and care, and not to push ourselves harder until we feel like breaking.
Is ADHD really a "superpower"? Or is that just a toxic label that sets high-performers up for a massive crash? In this episode, Dr. Jody sits down with executive coach Cathy Rashidian (aka The Candid Empath) to dismantle the popular "superpower" narrative. They unpack the visceral reality of leading with a "fast brain"—from the dopamine-fueled highs of hyper-focus to the crushing "hangover" that inevitably follows. They also tackle the "Accidental Leader" trap: why so many of us are promoted eight years before we're actually trained, why we become "self-appointed fire marshals" just to get our dopamine hits, and why "resilience" has become a dirty word for leaders who are tired of bouncing back.In this conversationThe "Superpower" Trap: Why Cathy views her brain as a "messy roommate" rather than a superhero—and why that distinction matters. The Hyper-Focus Hangover: The biological cost of flow states and why you need a "body budget."The 8-Year Gap: The "peer-to-boss" transition and why you're likely DIY-ing your leadership style.Marination vs. Procrastination: Why doing nothing is actually when the real work happens.Toxic Resilience: Why we need to stop proving we can handle it all and start setting boundaries that fuel us.If you've ever felt like your "genius" comes with a heavy price tag, or if you are tired of being the most resilient person in the room, this conversation is the permission slip you didn't know you needed.

Hey guys hey! If you've ever felt burned out, stuck in the wrong job, or like your ADHD brain just doesn't "fit" into traditional career paths—you're not alone. Today's guest is Shell Mendelson, a powerhouse ADHD career coach with over 30 years of experience helping adults ditch the job-hopping, escape toxic work environments, and build careers that actually work for their brains—not against them. In this episode, Shell breaks down:
Over the last few weeks, it has been increasingly difficult for me to keep myself focused on what I want to be focused on. I don't think I have to particularly speak to the reasons; we're all handling the state of the world in our own ways - in many ways, it has a similar feel to the beginning of the pandemic, where I felt like I needed to pay extra attention to the news because so many people around me were ignoring the alarm bells. Trying to deal with all of this while also having to grapple with the cognitive dissonance of having to go on with real life while all of this is also going on at the same time can be incredibly difficult. It feels like we should be able to press pause on all the other things going on in our life. But regardless of how we feel, time marches on. In today's episode, we're tackling how to navigate life when focus feels impossible, why we turn to numbing when we're overwhelmed, and most importantly, how we can break out of that cycle in a way that actually supports us. If you'd life to follow along on the show notes page you can find that at HackingYourADHD.com/212 The #1 ADHD Coaching app for teens and adults. Use code HACKINGYOURADHD for 30% of your first month! https://www.shimmer.care/ This Episode's Top Tips More than anything, I want to remind everyone to give themselves grace when they're going through something. We're not always going to get it right, but being hard on ourselves is never the right answer. Throughout your day, take a moment to check in with how you're feeling. We tend to ignore our feelings until they become something we have to deal with. Forget the "Go big or go home" mentality. Tiny changes—like five minutes of mindful breathing or a short walk—are more effective than drastic, unrealistic plans. When everything feels overwhelming, find support. Whether it's a friend, an online group, or a therapist, you don't have to handle everything alone.
In this coaching call, I had the pleasure of talking with Sarah, a creative mom who struggles with consistency due to her ADHD and the challenges of everyday life. We delved into what consistency looks like for her and how she can create touchpoints in her day that help her feel capable and confident. We identified practical steps she can take, starting with simple hygiene routines and establishing a capsule wardrobe to make getting ready easier. This conversation was all about helping Sarah find flexibility within her routines and redefining what it means to be consistent in her unique life circumstances. In this episode of ADHD reWired, I'm pulling back the curtain on two intertwined journeys: my own path toward sustainability and the incredible growth story of Jessica, an alumna of our ADHD Coaching and Accountability Groups. As I've navigated my own challenges with burnout and the pressures of juggling too much, I've made a commitment this year to focus on what matters most. My word for the year—sustainability—has reshaped how I approach my work, my energy, and even this podcast. Jessica's story adds another layer of depth to this episode. After feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and disconnected while pursuing her PhD, Jessica joined our fall coaching group. Through her deeply personal and reflective audio journal, she shares how the program helped her build sustainable systems, reconnect with her goals, and find the motivation to tackle her work and her life with renewed energy. From discovering the power of accountability teams to replacing old habits with more supportive ones, Jessica's transformation offers hope and inspiration for anyone seeking to live more intentionally with ADHD. This season, we've made changes to our coaching program to better support ADHDers like you. Now 8 weeks instead of 10, the program is more focused and accessible. We've also introduced on-demand access to our yearly planning sessions, allowing you to go at your own pace. These adjustments reflect the principle that less is truly more when it comes to creating meaningful and lasting growth. The final registration events for our Winter Coaching and Accountability Groups are Wednesday and Thursday of this week, so now is the time to take the next step. If you're ready to stop juggling fireballs and start building a more sustainable, ADHD-friendly life, visit to pre-register today. Tune in to hear Jessica's story, learn more about what makes our coaching groups so transformative, and find inspiration to start your own growth journey. Together, let's challenge internalized ableism and reimagine what it means to thrive with ADHD.
