Wicked was a smash hit that earned Oscar nominations for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo–but that was only the first half of the story. Sean and Amanda are joined by Juliet Litman and return to the (not so) wonderful world of Oz to cover John M. Chu's ‘Wicked: For Good,' starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Before diving in, they react to new movie trailers for Charli XCX's ‘The Moment' (1:02) and ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' (10:54). Then, they discuss ‘Wicked: For Good,' which they found deeply frustrating due to its bizarre story choices and one-dimensional characters (18:22). They hypothesize its potential box office, compare this year's press tour to last year's, and weigh its Academy Award chances (1:07:44). Next, Sean and Amanda briefly examine Clint Bentley's ‘Train Dreams,' starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, a deeply earnest and sincere portrayal of grief with some beautiful digital photography and an amazing collection of character actors (1:22:55). Finally, Bentley joins the show to discuss his new film and explains why he initially thought the original material was unadaptable, how he put a lot of intent behind capturing the logging scenes in the movie, and shares his feelings on the current state of independent film (1:34:28). The long-awaited conclusion is here! Hosts Eddie and Spencer, and Intern Manager/Managing Intern Amy dive into their full, unreserved thoughts on the sequel to last year's musical smash hit, Wicked: For Good. The crew applauds the dynamic duo of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, recognizing that their strongest performances yet—both vocally and emotionally—power this finale, echoing their explosive chemistry both on and off-screen. However, despite the powerhouse performances, the team grapples with why this highly anticipated entry into the pink and green franchise ultimately falls short. They dissect the film's crucial failings: a noticeable lack of fluidity in the storytelling, the frustrating inability to present updated arrangements of the iconic songs, and a minimalist treatment of side plots that are essential to the main characters but seemingly ignored by the filmmakers. Resident Wicked expert Amy—a lifelong fan—gives her heartfelt arguments for the film's creative decisions, but ultimately, the crew agrees that Wicked: For Good tragically misses the chance to be the powerhouse closing chapter this story deserved. Join us for a passionate, nuanced, and perhaps slightly heartbroken review of a film that was nearly Popular, but fell just shy of Unlimited.
Wicked is back to defy gravity once again and rock the moviegoing population worldiwde. After the gigantic critical, financial and awards hit that was the first Wicked , Wicked: For Good aims to close out the adaptation of the stage musical. But, as most people online now, the second half of the Wicked musical is infamous for being much weaker than the first. I was shocked last year when I stepped into that screening and came out actually liking Wicked; I was not looking forward to seeing a nearly three-hour musical that was only going to tell half the story, but the performances, musical numbers and world building really won me over. I didn't think it was quite great, and scoffed a little at all the awards aclaim that followed its release... but there's no denying how much that movie struck a chord. So, with Wicked: For Good, is Jon M. Chu able to capture lightning in a bottle for a second time and deliver on what the stage musical could not? Find out in this review!Wicked: For Good:Directed by: Jon M. Lucy Fenwick Elliott talks to director Jon M. Chu about his new film Wicked: For Good, in cinemas now. Last year's global cinematic cultural sensation, which became the most successful Broadway film adaptation of all time, now reaches its epic, electrifying, emotional conclusion in Wicked: For Good. Directed once again by award-winning director Jon M. Chu and starring the spectacular returning cast, led by Academy Award® nominated superstars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the final chapter of the untold story of the witches of Oz begins with Elphaba and Glinda estranged and living with the consequences of their choices. Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), now demonized as The Wicked Witch of the West, lives in exile, hidden within the Ozian forest while continuing her fight for the freedom of Oz's silenced Animals and desperately trying to expose the truth she knows about The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum). Glinda, meanwhile, has become the glamorous symbol of Goodness for all of Oz, living at the palace in Emerald City and reveling in the perks of fame and popularity. As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, Glinda and Elphaba will need to come together one final time. With their singular friendship now the fulcrum of their futures, they will need to truly see each other, with honesty and empathy, if they are to change themselves, and all of Oz, for good. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo take center stage in Wicked: For Good, the highly anticipated finale to the blockbuster musical saga. On this episode of The Moviegoers Society, Sean Tajipour, the Mayor of Nerdtropolis, and Drew Munhausen dive into Jon M. Chu's bold return to Oz — exploring how dazzling performances collide with a chaotic second act that still struggles to shake the musical's long-standing flaws. They break down the film's biggest strengths, from the emotional punch of “For Good” and “No Good Deed” to Jonathan Bailey's standout turn as Fiyero, while also digging into the messy pacing, rushed story threads, and expanded world-building that make Act II such a challenge to adapt for the screen. Sean and Drew also discuss the film's approach to Dorothy, the visual design of Oz, and whether this finale ultimately sticks the landing for fans of the original musical.
