SummaryWhat constitutes a culture of philanthropy within nonprofits and NGOs? It's a term easily bandied around, but how do I see when it's in place? How has the field of direct giving by small donors, and monthly giving as one donor practice in particular changed in the last 10-20 years? Are there hurdles to be overcome in persuading donors to adopt monthly giving? Finally, there is a lot of discussion about the need for a shift towards ethical storytelling, with local program participants in the driver's seat, and while focusing on the local person's agency. The raison d'etre for this is clear; however, is this aligned with what motivates donors (at least in traditional fundraising 'markets') to give? In this NGO Soul+Strategy podcast episode, I interview Erica Waasdorp, President of A Direct Solution, a consulting agency with expertise in direct giving and monthly giving, on trends in direct fundraising.Erica's Bio:Author and Speaker, and a Master Trainer affiliated with the Association for Fundraising ProfessionalsExpertise in Direct Marketing, Monthly Giving, International FundraisingUS Ambassador for the International Fundraising Congress (IFC)Before launching A Direct Solution, she held several consulting, coaching and direct marketing roles in various consulting agencies, nonprofits, and in the publishing industry. We discuss - particularly with regard to the US donor arena: Online donations have blossomed since 2011, to the point where people now have access to many online payment platforms, donation-by-text, etc.Religious people are more generous than non-religious people; and so are low to mid-income people (in relative terms, as a proportion of their income), as compared to wealthy peopleMonthly giving is an important strategy to underpin financial sustainability since it guarantees nonprofits potentially significant levels of dependable unrestricted revenue; this in turn allows the agency to do long-term planning. In the short term, when setting up monthly giving as one avenue, it is more capacity and resource-intensive for an agencyMonthly giving as one donation strategy has been around for decades, but many nonprofits have only started focusing on it in a serious way in the last 10 or so yearsThere is some tension between the NGO sector's aspired direction of ethical, authentic storytelling – what Erica calls ‘the complete story' --, that starts from a program participant's strengths and assets and the opportunities they have rather than from a deficit perspective, and the need of donors to feel that they contribute to a clear need. This tension is not yet fully acknowledged.Intermediary nonprofit ranking and rating sites (e.g. Guidestar, Charity Navigator, Give Well, etc in a US context) fulfill a donor's felt need for transparency and the ability to trust an agency, but such data is unlikely to shape donation behavior of new donors in a major way. Child sponsorships are likely to continue as a vehicle for fundraising, but at a lower level than before. Many nonprofits' donor pools are aging (a lot), and this will remain the case till current day Millenials and subsequent generations age themselves. Paddy and I recorded a brief 15 minute bonus of how the world could look if we actually employed all the strategies in 'Building Tomorrow' - so sit back, soak it in - and then let's make it happen... BIO: Author, Paddy le Flufy read mathematics at Cambridge, then - as seems to have happened with quite a lot of our recent guests, he took a job in the city and qualified as an accountant with KPMG. And then, as also seems to happen with our guests, he didn't buy into the system, but instead spent years, living a double life in which he worked as a finance specialist in London for six months of the year and then used the money to live in remote places, alongside people whose lives were radically different from his own. He has traveled with economic migrants, been taught to fish by the rural people of Mozambique and lived with Hadza hunter-gatherers. He spent two months living with an indigenous tribe in the Ama§on rainforest, then won a Royal Geographical Society Award to spend an entire year being taught by traditional wisdom-keepers from another jungle culture. Since 2015, he has been based in the UK and then Canada, researching how we can redesign our economic system to avert the impending environmental catastrophe. His book is the result and it brought together some ideas we've explored already on the podcast, but knits them with things I had never heard about, and it creates a whole that has the potential to change the way our culture functions - which is genuinely exciting. In this episode, I speak with Eleni Fuiaxis on failure, pivoting from one industry to another, authenticity and her greatest accomplishment. ★ Eleni's Bio: ★ Author, Educator, Entrepreneur, SAG Actress/Model and Motherx2, Eleni is constantly growing and rediscovering. Eleni threw caution to the wind and left a lucrative, 6 figure salary in Sales in NYC to pursue her childhood dream of acting (much to the dismay of her friends and family) at the ripe old age of 30! Without any industry knowledge or contacts, she launched a successful acting and modeling career that has spanned over two decades and is still going strong at the age of 52 in the most charismatic, competitive and cutthroat city in the world. In addition to her thriving acting and modeling career, she recently published her first children's book, Picky Patrick and has added publishing to her repertoire.Take that leap of faith and apply for that promotion, write YOUR book, tell YOUR story, change YOUR career, get out of that destructive relationship, stop self-sabotaging and invest in YOUrself because you're worth it! I believe rejection is just re-direction and failure can be your best friend. Connect with Eleni:https://www.elenifuiaxis.com

This week's episode is the last of our celebration of one year of the podcast and we have brought back another fan favourite Emily Mishler! Emily and I have developed a deep connection which started with both of us listening to a feeling that we needed to get to know each other. I had no idea what friendship would blossom from that and that she would be my teacher for many important lessons in my life. The pandemic was the opportunity for us to slow down, focus on what is important and create intentions about how we wanted our life to look like and reflect on what had worked so far in getting us closer towards our goals and aspirations in life. During this episode, we let you in on what has worked both for our work lives and in developing and maintaining our friendship consciously. This was recorded earlier this year and both of us are in Hawaii together during this release - you never know what happens when you say and mean yes! I can't wait to hear what you think about this episode - it is a very special one! During this episode we discuss: Knowing how a healthy relationship feels for you Intimate relationships - the one with yourself and your environment Guilt and shame around travelling and leaving your closest family members The feeling of knowing that you have to do something so you don't settle for a life that is small The deep desires in your heart is life trying to move through you You always know the right next step for you if you are willing to listen to your inner voice Don't drink the ‘compare-slogger' Understand the underlying motivation for your behaviours that may be distracting you from listening to that inner voice Be willing to go ‘there' and have conversations that are uncomfortable but part of healthy relationships Emily's Bio: Author, adventurer & life-liver, Emily Mishler is the driving force behind The Cultivated Group and the world of Esmè the Curious Cat. But it's also a candid portrayal of a young Black boy from Memphis who follows his dream to study law at a predominantly white university. What happens when their shared love for literature blossoms into an ill-fated romance? Spanning five decades of historical civil rights events in Mississippi and Memphis, John and Mary Margaret's story will challenge the status quo and give us another opportunity to examine our history and our hearts. Susan Cushman sets John and Mary Margaret, her second novel and seventh book, in her home state of Mississippi and her current city of Memphis. Cushman's published books include Friends of the Library (short stories), Cherry Bomb (novel), Tangles and Plaques: A Mother and Daughter Face Alzheimer's (memoir), and three anthologies she edited. Susan writes with deep insight into the South's storied past, bringing elements of hope and healing to her short stories, memoir, and novels – honoring the heart, soul, and history of the South. Susan is a wife, mother, and grandmother. She is a resident of Memphis, TN. Boomer Living Tv - Podcast For Baby Boomers, Their Families & Professionals In Senior Living
Ageism is a form of discrimination and prejudice against older people. It's everywhere, from the workplace to healthcare to entertainment to education. You may not even realize you're being affected by it because it's so ingrained in our culture, but that doesn't mean we should ignore its existence. It hurts the economy; it's unfair to you and your children. Ageism is killing humanity one person at a time.END AGEISM! This can be done by raising awareness about ageism and educating people about how they can prevent it from happening in their own lives and society at large. We need more positive images of older adults that show them as active participants in society instead of just older people who sit around all day doing nothing but waiting for death to take them away. If everyone did their part, maybe someday, your children could live in a world where no one has to suffer through this kind of discrimination ever again. We must all stand up and say, "I will not let my children be discriminated against because of their age."--------------------Timestamps:[00:00]Pre-Intro remarks from Ashton Applewhite[02:19]Walk us through your career and how you ended up focusing a lot on aging?[04:39]Can you remember the first time you dealt with ageism in your own life and how it made you feel?[06:05]Why do you think ageism is such a big problem in our society in America? What is it about this country specifically? And do you think it has something to do with a very individualistic culture?[11:30]How can we begin to shift our culture to one that is more respectful and of elders and value them a lot more?[13:25]Why do you think people justify discriminating on the basis of age, but discriminating on the basis of gender, religion, ability, sexual orientation is looked at so differently?[19:06]"Silver Tsunami" - I just want that word to be gone.[22:36]Who do you think has the responsibility to cut down on aging? Is it the younger people since they are the future of our culture, the middle-aged people to set an example for younger generations, or is it the older generations who are being discriminated against?[32:32]Do you have, or what do you think of some of the short and long-term solutions slash movements to help us combat aging?--------------------Bio:Author and activist Ashton Applewhite is the author of "This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism" (Celadon Books, 2019). In 2016, she joined PBS site Next Avenue’s annual list of 50 Influencers in Aging as their Influencer of the Year. Ashton has been recognized by the New York Times, the New Yorker, National Public Radio, and the American Society on Aging as an expert on ageism. She blogs at This Chair Rocks, has written for Harper’s, the Guardian, and the New York Times, and is the voice of Yo, Is This Ageist? Ashton speaks widely, at venues that have ranged from universities and community centers to the TED mainstage and the United Nations. Have you ever felt a deep connection to someone that you can’t really explain? I am grateful to say that I have, and I almost didn’t allow myself to know what that was like because I was holding onto limiting beliefs around independence. I now understand that meaningful relationships are hugely important to your success in life - and honestly even your health!Going into another lockdown (in Ontario), we have become familiar with the negative consequences of physical isolation. I never felt isolated because I had amazing people around me, one of those being my guest Emily Mishler. We have learned about the value of exploring ourselves through the mirror that is our friendship. It has been one of the greatest gifts of the past year as it has challenged me to grow in ways I never thought was possible. I have this deep feeling that there are others who are seeking more meaningful connections like I was, especially given the lockdown again, so we wanted to share our experience with you with the intention that it can be a guiding light for what’s possible if you follow that feeling of connection! During this episode we discuss: Are successful people lonely? Meaningful relationships will expose your own limiting beliefs and armour Life asks you to trust yourself - most times the best thing happens when you do Sharing the human experience - having someone hold space for trauma wounding is healing Can you ask for help? What’s behind the fear of asking for help? How your values are reflected in the foundation of a friendship (or any relationship) Spaciousness - creating space for the evolution Doing the work and letting go of limiting beliefs can open you up to a meaningful connection Your journey of ‘doing the work’ is completely individual - there is no ‘right’ way! Having integrity to tell your truth (while checking for your own projections) can create a deeper connection What’s behind making a decision to take a risk based on a feeling (& avoid a midlife crisis) Focusing on yourself (& maybe looking ‘selfish’) is for the betterment of everyone Emily’s Bio:Author, adventurer & life-liver, Emily Mishler is the driving force behind The Cultivated Group and the world of Esmè the Curious Cat. On today’s episode I’m taking a bit of a different approach because I want you to get to know me better! On this Thanksgiving weekend in Canada, I am realizing how much there is to be grateful for, even with all of the changes that have happened this year. I am especially grateful for the time to slow down and really focus on the healing process myself and how much my life has realigned because of that. A lot of the feedback I have gotten from the podcast so far has been interest around this massive topic. One episode cannot do it justice, but I wanted to start the conversation giving you some of my thoughts on this topic and what has guided me along my own healing journey. I also wanted to bring back Emily Mishler (from episode one) who has had an impact on my life this year while also on her own healing journey. We wanted to share our healing reflections from the most transformative periods in our respective lives (so far)! I felt very called to do this episode and I know that the people who are meant to hear this and take away value will! During this episode I/we discuss: The difference and benefits of healing and curing Why the spiritual aspect of healing is important & a difference maker First steps you can take to integrate healing into your life today The power of choice in your everyday life Knowing the difference between your path/your wants and expectations from those around you The importance of making peace with your past The difference between being perceived by others vs. your own self perception Emily’s reflection on the biggest needle mover for increased self image How to gain awareness of what behaviours are habit in your life How healing allows you to discover that all aspects of your life are interconnected Emily’s Bio: Author, adventurer & life-liver, Emily Mishler is the driving force behind The Cultivated Group and the world of Esmè the Curious Cat. At least 13 people have been killed and dozens injured in Barcelona after a van ploughed into pedestrians in a busy tourist street. More than two hours after the atrocity a man was shot dead after driving through a roadblock in a Ford Focus and opening fire, injuring two police officers. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, describing the killers as 'soldiers of the Islamic state'. Terror police are also reported to have arrested two suspects. One of them is believed to be Driss Oukabir, a Catalan resident in his late 20s of Moroccan origin. Oukabir, who has reportedly served time in a Spanish prison, had earlier rented one of the vans used in the deadly attack. The suspect is being treated 'as a terrorist', police in Barcelona have confirmed. Horrifying pictures and video from the scene show armed police and paramedics rushing around Las Ramblas, a busy promenade in the centre of the city, as victims lie hurt in the street. It remains unclear how many attackers were involved in the massacre, which is being treated by police as an act of terrorism. SHEER MADNESS OMAR KHADR GETS 8 MILLION AND AN APOLOGY... US SOLDIER'S WIDOW MAY NEVER SEE A DIME... FOREIGN POLICY/TERRORISM ANALYST: Dan Perkins, is a master storyteller and author of The Brotherhood of the Red Nile Trilogy, which centers around Islamic nuclear terrorism against the USA. He is a nationally recognized expert on radical Islam and and contributor to DailyCaller.com, ClashDaily.com, DailySurge.com and TheHill.com. "Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave Omar Khadr a big payout, but the terroristâ??s real victims may never see any of that money. Canada agreed to pay the former Guantanamo prisoner a reported $8 million in a lawsuit alleging civil rights violations. The settlement included an apology. The Canadian-born Khadr was 15 in 2002 when he tossed a grenade in a firefight that killed U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Speer, a special forces medic. Tabitha Speer, the soldier's widow, and Layne Morris, who was blinded in the firefight, won a $134 million wrongful-death default judgment against Khadr two years ago in Utah. Lawyers for the widow and Morris requested an order freezing Khadrâ??s assets, but last week a Canadian judge threw out the request, calling it â??extraordinary." Conservative Member of the Canadian Parliament and official opposition critic for foreign affairs Peter Kent wrote in The Wall Street Journal Monday that the timing of the payout undermines Tabitha Speerâ??s legal options to collect on the judgment. He added that Trudeauâ??s actions â??are an affront to the memory of Christopher Speer, to Tabitha Speer and her children, to Layne Morris, to our U.S. allies and to all men and women in uniform.â?? He also called the settlement â??a cynical subversionâ?? of Canadian principles." Susan Katz Miller UU "fangirl" and ally presented at GA Portland to clergy about interfaith families and their roles and responsabilites to them. How is your congregation interacting with interfaith families? What are clergy doing to be more inclusive of interfaith families in the congregations? Children in interfaith families can be taught both religions. This allows youth to explore and experience a wealth of tradition and culture inside their families. Bio: Author and journalist Susan Katz Miller is both an interfaith child and an interfaith parent. Her father is Jewish, her mother is Protestant: she grew up in Reform Judaism. After marrying a Protestant, Miller and her husband decided to raise their children in both religions, in a community of interfaith families. Miller served as Board Co-Chair of the Interfaith Families Project of Greater Washington DC. Miller graduated from Brown University, and began her journalism career at Newsweek in New York. After working in the Los Angeles and Washington bureaus, she moved to Dakar, Senegal for three years. While there, she wrote travel pieces for the New York Times, was tear-gassed in the streets while covering an election, interviewed the President of Senegal for Newsweek International, and wrote Christian Science Monitor pieces from Benin, Togo, the Gambia, and Sierra Leone. On returning to the States, she became a US Correspondent for the British weekly magazine New Scientist. She then spent three years freelancing from northeastern Brazil. After her two children were born, she and her husband settled in the Washington, DC, area, and she founded the first blog devoted to interfaith family communities and interfaith identity, onbeingboth.com, and began blogging at Huffington Post Religion. Miller’s writing has also appeared in Time, Slate, Utne Reader, Discover, Science, National Wildlife, Health, Moment, Jewcy.com, interfaithfamily.com, and many other publications. Miller studied photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and her photographs have been published in the New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor, and International Wildlife. Her work on interfaith families has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, NPR’s Here & Now, NPR’s Diane Rehm Show, on the PBS program Religion & Ethics Newsweekly and on HuffPost Live, and in dozens of other media outlets. BIO: Author and master storyteller Dan Perkins presents the first book in his trilogy about terrorism against the United States. The first in the series, The Brotherhood of the Red Nile, A Terrorist Perspective, has propelled him to national acclaim with interviews on radio, television and in-print.
