Buckle up for the Solarcoaster Ride: In this episode, Micah and Jared are joined by Erik Holvik and Spencer Fields of EnergySage, the country's largest online marketplace for clean energy comparison shopping. Erik and Spencer take you on a journey through the ups and downs of the solar market, commonly referred to by those in the industry as the "solarcoaster." We'll take you on an exploration of the ever-changing landscape of Solar, discussing the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping the renewable energy marketplace.
High interest rates and inflation have had a major impact on market potential for residential solar customers this year. Unfortunately, Homeowners generally view solar as a high dollar discretionary purchase rather than a valuable investment. Thus, we are seeing a bottoming out of residential solar sales compared with years' past. In today's discussion, we get to the bottom of what the data suggest is going on, and what you can do about it. Brian Ghiglia, Senior Director of Business Development at REC and Spencer Fields, Director of Insights at EnergySage, discuss the insights from millions of proposals generated via online clean energy marketplace (EnergySage) and data-driven strategies (adaptive selling) utilized by veterans to encourage homeowners to choose solar, even in a down market. In this conversation, Brian and Spencer discuss the importance of educating homeowners on more than just first-month savings. Solar is a long-term investment into the overall value of their home, but many sales teams struggle with how to compel the homeowner to go solar in an environment where high interest rates have stripped the silver bullet of “immediate savings”.Despite the current residential solar sales slump, EnergySage data suggests we're nearly through the trough and the future holds promise for sustained growth and wider adoption. The idea became reality, and the startup is now a subsidiary of DHL. By 2019, the system was already installed on more than 1,000 vehicles worldwide. In this episode of the podcast, learn about the founders’ revolutionary idea, the story of the startup, and how trucks are becoming more eco-friendly with the help of TRAILAR’s solar mats. This episode is sponsored by DigitalOcean: pythonbytes.fm/digitalocean Michael #1: pydantic via Colin Sullivan Data validation and settings management using python type annotations. (We covered Cerberus, this is similar) pydantic enforces type hints at runtime, and provides user friendly errors when data is invalid. class User(pydantic.BaseModel): id: int name = 'John Doe' signup_ts: datetime = None friends: List[int] = [] external_data = { 'id': '123', 'signup_ts': '2019-06-01 12:22', 'friends': [1, 2, '3'] } user = User(**external_data) id is of type int; the annotation-only declaration tells pydantic that this field is required. Strings, bytes or floats will be coerced to ints if possible; otherwise an exception will be raised. name is inferred as a string from the provided default; because it has a default, it is not required. signup_ts is a datetime field which is not required (and takes the value None if it's not supplied). Why use it? There's no new schema definition micro-language to learn. In benchmarks pydantic is faster than all other tested libraries. Use of recursive pydantic models, typing's standard types (e.g. List, Tuple, Dict etc.) and validators allow complex data schemas to be clearly and easily defined, validated, and parsed. As well as BaseModel, pydantic provides a [dataclass](https://pydantic-docs.helpmanual.io/usage/dataclasses/) decorator which creates (almost) vanilla python dataclasses with input data parsing and validation. Brian #2: Coverage.py 5.0 beta 1 adds context support Please try out the beta, even without trying contexts, as it helps Ned Batchelder to make sure it’s as backwards compatible as possible while still adding this super cool functionality. Coverage 5.0 beta 1 announcement The changes. Measurement contexts in depth. Trying out contexts with pytest and pytest-cov: (venv) $ pip install coverage==5.0b1 (venv) $ pip install pytest-cov (venv) $ pytest --cov=foo --cov-context=test test_foo.py (venv) $ coverage html --show-contexts (venv) $ open htmlcov/index.html results in coverage report that has little dropdowns on the right for lines that are covered, and what context they were covered. For the example above, with pytest-cov, it shows what test caused each line to be hit. Contexts can do way more than this. One example, split up different levels of tests, to see which lines are only hit by unit tests, indicating missing higher level tests, or the opposite. The stored db could also possibly be mined to see how much overlap there is between tests, and maybe help with higher level tools to predict the harm or benefit from removing some tests. I’m excited about the future, with contexts in place. Even if you ignore contexts, please go try out the beta ASAP to make sure your old use model still works. Michael #3: PSF is seeking developers for paid contract improving pip via Brian Rutledge The Python Software Foundation Packaging Working Group is receiving funding to work on the design, implementation, and rollout of pip's next-generation dependency resolver. This project aims to complete the design, implementation, and rollout of pip's next-generation dependency resolver. Lower the barriers to installing Python software, empowering users to get a version of a package that works. It will also lower the barriers to distributing Python software, empowering developers to make their work available in an easily reusable form. Because of the size of the project, funding has been allocated to secure two contractors, a senior developer and an intermediate developer, to work on development, testing and building test infrastructure, code review, bug triage, and assisting in the rollout of necessary features. Total pay: Stage 1: $116,375, Stage 2: $103,700 Brian #4: dovpanda - Directions OVer PANDAs Dean Langsam “Directions are hints and tips for using pandas in an analysis environment. dovpanda is an overlay for working with pandas in an analysis environment. "If you think your task is common enough, it probably is, and Pandas probably has a built-in solution. dovpanda is an overlay module that tries to understand what you are trying to do with your data, and help you find easier ways to write your code.” “The main usage of dovpanda is its hints mechanism, which is very easy and works out-of-the-box. Just import it after you import pandas, whether inside a notebook or in a console.” It’s like training wheels for pandas to help you get the most out of pandas and learn while you are doing your work. Very cool. Michael #5: removestar via PyCoders newsletter Tool to automatically replace 'import *' in Python files with explicit imports Report only mode and modify in place mode. Brian #6: pytest-quarantine : Save the list of failing tests, so that they can be automatically marked as expected failures on future test runs. Brian Rutlage Really nice email from Brian: >"Hi Brian! We've met a couple times at PyCon in Cleveland. Thanks for your podcasts, and your book. I've gone from being a complete pytest newbie, to helping my company adopt it, to writing a plugin. The plugin was something I developed at work, and they let me open-source it. I wanted to share it with you as a way of saying "thank you", and because you seem to be a bit of connoisseur of pytest plugins. ;)" Here it is: https://github.com/EnergySage/pytest-quarantine/” pytest has a cool feature called xfail, to allow you to mark tests you know fail. pytest-quarantine allows you to run your suite and generate a file of all failures, then use that to mark the xfails. Then you or your team can chip away at these failures until you get rid of them. But in the meantime, your suite can still be useful for finding new failures. And, the use of an external file to mark failures makes it so you don’t have to edit your test files to mark the tests that are xfail. Extras: MK: Our infrastructure is fully carbon neutral! Joke: A cop pulls Dr. Heisenberg over for speeding. The officer asks, "Do you know how fast you were going?" Heisenberg pauses for a moment, then answers, "No, but I know where I am.” [1] See Uncertainty principle, also called Heisenberg uncertainty principle or indeterminacy principle, statement, articulated (1927) by the German physicist Werner Heisenberg, that the position and the velocity of an object cannot both be measured exactly, at the same time, even in theory.

So far, all of the rumors and reporting reference it being a car of some description, but there is the possibility it could be something else. according to Apple Insider: "According to multiple unnamed sources of Manager Magazin, prototypes of Apple's work have been seen painted in black and silver. While few details are provided by the publication about the vehicles, the main highlight is that vans are being tested, rather than cars. The report also claims Apple's engineers are now working on the interior of the vehicle. The "Apple Car," thought by some to be arriving between 2023 and 2025 at the earliest, has undergone development at Apple in a variety of different ways under the name "Project Titan." Originally working on an entire vehicle, the project changed its focus towards self-driving vehicle systems, though there are some signs it is shifting back towards overall vehicular design." https://appleinsider.com/articles/19/02/21/apple-project-titan-vehicle-could-turn-out-to-be-an-electric-van DELIVERIES OF KIA E-NIRO DELAYED DUE TO SHORTAGES From the Industry news source Electrive: "Buyers of the Kia Niro EV in Europe must be patient as they are currently looking at delivery times of over a year. Thus states a letter to dealers in which Kia explains that “Europe-wide demand clearly exceeds expectations and current battery production capacity” writes Chris Randall: "The letter to dealers was made available to electrive. In the letter, Kia further states that the delay applies both to new orders of their electric car and to already concluded orders for the e-Niro. Accordingly, it is recommended for dealers to adjust the generally communicated delivery forecast from “6 months from order” to “at least 12 months from order”. According to the document, vehicles that were advertised for delivery in spring 2019 will not be available until significantly later." https://www.electrive.com/2019/02/21/kia-niro-ev-customers-have-to-wait/ KIA TEASES NEW ELECTRIC CONCEPT AHEAD OF GENEVA MOTOR SHOW "Kia wants to show what the future of its electrified car range looks like with a new concept that will debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Though there are no details on the car so far, aside from this lone teaser image released Thursday, it sounds like the concept will have a more exciting design than Kia's current electric cars." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/kia-electric-concept-2019-geneva-motor-show/ MODEL 3 GET ACKNOWLEDGED BY US AUTO DEALERSHIP EXEC "The president of Sonic Automotive Inc., a prominent auto dealership in the United States, recently acknowledged Tesla’s disruption of the country’s car industry as a reason behind headwinds faced by the network in the past quarter." says Simon at Teslarati: "While answering inquiries during Sonic’s Q4 2018 earnings call, Jeff Dyke, the company’s president, noted that Tesla and the rise of the Model 3 played a role in the weakening sales of brands such as BMW, especially in areas such as California." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-us-dealerships-disruption/ ANALYST DOUBTS MUSK "At least one auto industry analyst is skeptical about Tesla CEO Elon Musk's bold claim that the electric car maker will have all the features necessary for full autonomy by the end of the year." reports CNBC "In fact Musk may be misleading the public over how capable Tesla's cars are, said Karl Brauer, executive publisher at Cox Automotive." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/20/industry-analyst-doesnt-buy-musk-claims-about-tesla-self-driving-tech.html TESLA POWERWALLS ARE IN HIGH DEMAND "Only 12 percent of solar installers carry Tesla’s Powerwall, according to the latest findings in a report from EnergySage and the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners. " says GreenTEchMedia: "The report, a nationwide survey of U.S. solar installers, noted that one in three customers are now expressing interest in energy storage solutions for their home. Of that subset, installers reported that 56 percent of consumers ask for the Powerwall. A much smaller portion are actually getting the product, according to the survey’s results. For Tesla, the problem has largely been prioritizing its vehicle manufacturing, with a push to meet production targets on its Model 3." https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/tesla-powerwalls-but-installers-dont-have-them?utm_campaign=GTMsocial&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_content=1550780316#gs.t1c8vzCC COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Vikram Aggarwal Founder and CEO of EnergySage discusses the 2018 contractor landscape and fields questions on the state of solar today The post Solar r.e.view Podcast: The 2018 Contractor Landscape appeared first on BayWa r.e. Solar Systems.
Even as solar goes mainstream, it's tough for consumers to tell which installer, which panels, and which financing are right for them. It's a gap that Vikram Aggarwal says could hold back steep growth potential for rooftop solar. And it's one he's trying to fix through his online solar shopping platform, EnergySage.
The combination of falling prices and rising interest put rooftop solar on a strong trajectory. But even as solar goes mainstream, it’s tough for consumers to tell which installer, which panels, and which financing is right for them. There has been little transparency in solar pricing, and consumers without technical expertise have a tough time shopping around. It’s a barrier to widespread solar adoption that gnaws at Vikram Aggarwal, and one he’s trying to fix through his online solar-shopping platform, EnergySage. “The solar economics are so good that if you are a business owner today in America and you are not looking at solar, you are leaving good money on the table,” Aggarwal said. “In a number of states, if you’re a homeowner and you’re not considering solar, you are again leaving good money on the table.” … Read More

Vikram Aggarwal is the founder and CEO of EnergySage, the online solar marketplace. EnergySage simplifies the process of researching and shopping for solar, making the experience as easy as booking a flight online By introducing price transparency across suppliers and enabling apples-to-apples comparisons of solar systems, pre-screened installers and financing options, EnergySage is demystifying prices and shortening the buyer’s information-gathering phase. As a result, consumers are empowered to make quicker, more informed purchasing decisions about solar panels that specifically meet their individual needs, while also saving as much as 20% on the cost of their systems. Vikram founded EnergySage after more than fifteen years with a major global financial services leader, specializing in private equity investing and strategy consulting – because he recognized that solar panels were not only great for the environment, but also a low volatility, low risk financial product that could enable businesses and homeowners to save on their monthly energy bills as well as generate income over time. Vikram holds master’s degree in business administration and is a CFA charter holder.
