Show Notes provided by Joe Peluso Episode art proved by Richie Garofalo Episode edited by Adrienne Garofalo "Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane!--No! It'sanother Superman origin!" Just before the onset of the ill-conceived New 52 Reboot, DC Comics tapped Geoff Johns and Gary Frank to delivera post-Infinite Crisis retelling of The Man of Steel's beginnings.Paying homage to past iterations of the character from across all media, yet delivering fresh and innovative choices to the lore, this pair of creatives crafted a compelling, fun read that reminded fans--new and old--why they adore the skies that Superman soars through.     Join your hosts Keith and Joe for another Comics Comics of rediscovery, and reminiscenes. From the doomed planet Krypton, to the wavering wheat fields of Smallville, to the sky scratching spires of Metropolis the guys examine in detail this mini-epic of the world's greatest hero's beginnings. Comparisons to John Byrne and Mark Waid origin epics are discussed. How much did the TV show Smallville inform the choices made by Johns and Frank?  Was this a soul-searching emotional story of self-discovery, or a towering tale of inspiration? And what the heck was in those Lex Corp donuts that Rudy Jones scarffed down?     All comic book aficanadoes have their favorite characters, and all Superman devotees have a Last Son of Krypton origin they treasure."Superman: Secret Origin" is one of those classic gems.    Back to the days when radio brought to life hours of dramatic entertainment to millions of avid American listeners, one phrase was often heard that thrilled both young and old alike--"UP! UP! AND AWAY!"

Was sind denn Comics überhaupt? Klar!

Comics’ Greatest World: Out Of The Vortex #1 (1993)Oh man, time for some Dark Horse comics! In this offering, an alien in a dope-looking outfit appears out of nowhere in a military base located in Cinnabar Flats, Nevada. “Cinnabar” makes us think of cinnamon which is appropriate because our alien guy (Vortex the Heretic) encounters opposition in the form of space spartans carrying electric Eggo waffles. When it's all said and done, a big bubble of lethal toothpaste envelopes the base while our alien antihero makes a brave Army lieutenant his “space secretary.”Continue the conversation with Shawn and Jen on Twitter @angryheroshawn and @JenStansfield and email the show at worstcollectionever@gmail.com

Gene and Derek are back for another look at the current month's Previews catalog. This one may not be as long an episode as last month's Previewshow -- which clocked in at just under three hours -- but it's nonetheless hefty. (Well...actually, it is almost as long as the March show.) They begin this week by discussing the new changes appearing in Previewsbeginning in April. They point out the additions of BOOM! Studios and Dynamite Entertainment in the premiere publishers section, prominently displayed in the front of the catalog; the reorganizations of solicits in a new manga section; the shake-up of what had been the book section; the flip arrangement with the toy and merchandise sections; and next month's departure of DC Comics' solicitations into their own supplemental catalog. After that, and several cynical comments (primarily from Derek), they get into the nitty gritty of the April Previewscatalog, highlighting a variety of titles from such publishers as: Dark Horse Comics - Sword Daughter#1, Likely Stories, Gantz Omnibus Vol. 1, Hercules: Adventures of the Man-God, and EC Archives: War Against Crime Vol. 1 DC Comics/Vertigo - Plastic Man#1 and American Vampire Omnibus Vol. 1 IDW Publishing/Top Shelf - The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Tempest#1, Look Back and Laugh, Comic Book History of Comics: Comics for All, The Unknown Anti-War Comics, and Burmese Moon Image Comics - The Magic Order #1, The Weatherman#1, Proxima Centuri#1, Shanghai Red#1, and The Red Hook Vol. 1 Dynamite Entertainment - Nancy Drew#1 BOOM! Frank Santoro is a Pittsburgh-based cartoonist. He self-published his first major work, Storeyville in 1995 while living in San Francisco. Upon its republication twelve years later, Tom Spurgeon wrote, "Frank Santoro's Storeyville may be the book of 2007, which is doubly amazing when you realize that it may have been the book of 1995 as well." After spending time in the New York art scene, where he painted and assisted painter, Francesco Clemente, he returned to making comics in the early 2000s with Cold Heat - an unfinished collaboration with Ben Jones. He cofounded the influential comics criticism blog and publication, Comics Comics, with Dan Nadel and Tim Hodler. In 2011, he founded the Santoro Correspondence Course. He writes a weekly comic for tcj.com and runs comicworksbook (currently in the midst of the comicsworkbook Composition Competition 2013). This fall, Picturebox, Inc. will release Santoro's new graphic novel, Pompeii -- a historical romance set in the days before the eruption.
