Divorce can feel like you're unravelling from the inside out, and today Dr. Beth Karassik and Louise Zito, Esq. join Susan E. Guthrie to explain why and how you can regain your emotional footing.  If you're overwhelmed, scared, or emotionally flooded in the middle of divorce, there is a scientific reason for it and there are ways to steady yourself, even when everything around you feels chaotic. In this powerful conversation, Susan Guthrie is joined by clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist Dr. Beth Karassik and longtime mediator and collaborative professional Louise Zito, Esq. to break down what's happening in your brain and body during divorce and share practical tools for restoring calm, clarity, and control. Together, they help you understand why your reactions feel so big, why everyday decisions suddenly feel impossible, and what you can do right now to support your nervous system through one of the most destabilizing experiences of your life. Plus, for legal practitioners, discover how Beth and Louise's work can help you re-align, re-center, and rein in the chaos of divorce work. Why This Conversation Matters When you're navigating divorce without understanding what's happening in your nervous system, it's easy to blame yourself, question your decisions, or feel like you're failing. But the truth is this: divorce places an extraordinary cognitive and emotional load on you. When you know why you're reacting the way you are and you have tools that actually help you communicate more effectively, you make better choices, and you're able to protect your well-being through every stage of the process. And for the professionals who support divorcing individuals, understanding these emotional dynamics (and tending to their own regulation) directly affects their ability to guide clients forward. A grounded professional creates a grounded process, leading to healthier outcomes for everyone involved. This conversation supports both sides of the experience: the people living through divorce and the practitioners walking beside them. You Will Learn: Why divorce triggers fear, confusion, and emotional flooding How stress impacts communication, decision-making, and co-parenting Signs that your overwhelm is actually a trauma response Practical grounding tools you can use today Scripts for setting emotional boundaries during conflict How to build a support system that keeps you steady Why the emotional health of your divorce professional affects your experience Insight into the Calma Collective Retreat supporting divorce professionals Download the Calming Exercise Guide from this Episode: Access the grounding tools discussed in this episode. She discusses helping parents better understand big emotions, identifying when typical teen behaviour signals deeper concern, and responding in ways that de-escalate conflict rather than intensify it.May also explains why self-harm is often used as a coping strategy, how parents can regulate their own emotional responses during difficult moments, and practical steps to rebuild trust and connection with a disengaged teen.Takeaways: Navigating the complexities of hormonal changes during adolescence requires open communication and understanding. The importance of validation in a teen's emotional health cannot be overstated; it's essential for fostering independence. Social media can amplify feelings of bullying and anxiety in teens, making emotional support crucial. Parents need to recognize the signs of self-destructive behavior early to provide timely intervention and support. Establishing a functional emotional system in the family is key to managing discipline and emotional health effectively. Building a foundation of consent and mutual respect in relationships can help combat the pressures of social media. Companies mentioned in this episode: Creative Healing Teen Support Centers This podcast is for parents, guardians, teachers and caregivers to learn proven strategies and trusted tips on raising kids, teens and young adults based on science, evidenced and lived experience. You'll learn the latest on topics like managing bullying, consent, fostering healthy relationships, and the interconnectedness of mental, emotional and physical health.Links referenced in this episode:whereparentstalk.com

Emotional overload often comes from having conflicting feelings, too many feelings happening at once, or not being able to act based on your gut feelings. We have emotions for a reason – they're there to tell us something. Ignoring those feelings doesn't make them go away. Stress and emotion regulation Stress makes it more difficult to regulate emotions. By integrating some stress reduction techniques into your daily (or weekly) routine, you'll likely be able to calm down some of your racing thoughts and better recognize what else is going on that's contributing to your emotional overload. Name your emotions Combating emotional exhaustion is difficult, especially if you aren't quite able to pinpoint your exact emotions. The more specific you can get, the better. Write about it Journaling is a great tool for general mental wellness, and it can be particularly effective when you find yourself struggling to think straight. The hardest part is often getting started, so just write the first thing that comes to mind. You can start with something as simple as “Today was ________” or “I'm feeling ______ right now.” Once you have those first few words down, it's a lot easier to keep going. By getting your stream-of-consciousness thoughts onto paper, you'll be able to identify some underlying patterns or things that you didn't even realize were bothering you. Ground yourself As overwhelming as your thoughts may be, they can't hurt you. If you notice your thoughts starting to spiral, take a moment to reconnect with the present. Grounding techniques can help you to separate yourself from your distress. By focusing on the here and now, you can step away from how overwhelming everything else feels. Take some time to stretch, breathe (try “boxed breathing” – breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and so on), or listen to a guided meditation. Prioritize self-care When feeling overwhelmed, it's easy for your negative feelings to overtake your positive feelings, to the point where you may not even notice those positive feelings. Think about what makes you feel happy, relaxed, or inspired and allow yourself time to do those things. Seek help If self-help techniques aren't working, you might be experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. Learn more here.. https://linktr.ee/Sonyajanisse ~ Sonya

And when it comes to INFJs there are two camps. The ones who believe that they're completely numbed out, that they're in full control of their emotions - and they don't like it. They want to feel more. And therefore they're attracted to very emotional people. On the other hand, you have the INFJs who say I'm in no control of my emotions whatsoever. My emotions have so much impact on me and this doesn't sit well with me. I always make choices based on emotions. Well, in both scenarios, you will recognize that emotions do govern our life. And in most cases, we're not aware of them. Even if you fall into the camp of the ones who say, I don't feel anything, you'll see how much is subconsciously governed by emotions. And it's a task that we should take on. Once you learn the secret to understanding and controlling your emotions, you will see how much impact you have on changing your life and feeling fully alive. In today's episode, we will discuss one of the top questions I receive, "Can Meditation and Mindfulness make me more productive and efficient?" The answer is yes, but don't get mad when you discover that the root cause of your distractions may be your fault. But no worries, you can help your brain and your productivity. We will start by looking at your wandering mind and multi-tasking agenda. I am not even going to comment (yet) on the fact that you are probably doing five things at the same time right now. Do three more during my jingle, then let's figure out how to crush your to-do list. Hey there! Alexa Z here! In under 10 minutes, we will try to figure out how we can be more productive and more efficient by calming our wandering mind. Why am I doing this in under 10 minutes? We all have a lot to do, and studies have shown that our minds are wandering 47% of the time. So, let's round up to 50%, which means I have your attention for about half of this show. Hopefully, you will be able to learn a few tips to slow yourself down, quiet the wandering mind, and get more accomplished this holiday season.  BONUS: your sleep will improve and your immune system, plus you will slow the holidays down so you can enjoy them more. The more your mind wanders, the more you miss critical information, which results in more errors and productivity goes down. Wondering vs. Wandering Wondering mind- thinking = questioning mind Wandering mind = drifts, travels, moves in a direction away from what you want to focus on. There are many reasons why the mind wanders: Boredom Stress (not always negative) Holidays Family/work balance When you are stressed, and your mind is full, you are probably going to wander in two different directions: Wander to the future o   To-do list o   Worrying/catastrophizing Wander to the past o   Reliving o   Regretting o   Over analyzing We are training ourselves to be in the present moment and be fully aware. That means without being muddled up with reactions, as we discussed in the last episode – Emotional Overload. Wherever we place our attention, our brain will follow. We have to un-hijack our mind and stop it from wondering. Suggestions: Meditation trains our brain Calms our nervous system Handle stress better Mindfulness Buy ourselves an extra second to identify that we are overwhelmed/all over the place Take a look at what your daily life consists of:  grocery shopping, house cleaning, gift buying, work, email, children, driving around. It can be so overwhelming, you might often think, you should go faster to get everything done and complete that to-do list.  Ask a busy person if you want to get something done.  I recommend asking a busy person who appears to move slowly through their tasks.  We are not built to multi-task. We can multi-task, such as fold the laundry and have a discussion with your spouse, wash dishes, and think about a project, thinking while doing something very rote. If you are sitting down to get something done, you need to use all of your brain. That is why we try to make a unity of our mind through meditation. You must make sure that you are being mindful that you are not going down that path where you are all over the place. In your conscious and subconscious mind, there are only so many things that can be appropriately handled, and everything is coming at you so fast. You need to slow it down by first being aware that it is coming at you fast and then bringing your attention back to what you want to focus on. In meditation, we talk about the monkey mind, where the mind is pinging all over the place like a monkey swing from branch to branch. Slowing down is going to increase your productivity and efficiency, and help you de-stress. First, I want you to identify that you are going too fast. Then honestly, try to do one single task. Sometimes it can be helpful to use a timer. When you set a time to do one job, you are permitting yourself to concentrate on that one task. Once the timer is done you can take a few minutes to let your mind wander. Tips to slow down: While walking, say to yourself "when I walk, I walk". When you are listening to someone, say to yourself silently, "when I listen, I listen." Try these tips a few times a day. Take a little brain break, 45 seconds; breath in and out three times, relax your shoulders, relax your face, one more breath. Stop technique: Stop Take a breath Observe what is going on Proceed slowly We will continue to string all these topics together.  If you have listened to a couple of episodes, we always come back to the same thing; we want to take our practice and use it and have a peaceful life. I want you to have peaceful, happy, awesome, filled with love for the holidays.  Go forth, into your busy holiday season but do it slowly.  Don’t fear that you are missing out on everything.  Feel free to say no once in a while. Lots of self-care, more mono-tasking, and I hope you remember every single moment of the holidays.  The upcoming podcast before the year ends, we’ll talk about some goal setting, and I will also do a compassion meditation.  Thanks for joining me, have a wonderful day, have a wonderful week.  Peace out! Later tators!

You are in the company of many others, but it still feels like it is a heavy burden that only you must carry.” “Maybe you are on social media and you see how incredibly joyous and perfect everyone’s holidays are; we know it’s not reality, but it can make things more stressful.” “JOMO, the joy of missing out” “We want to take a step back and use some self-care so that when we hit the emotional rollercoaster of the holidays, we can allow our rational mind to catch up to our emotional mind.” In this episode, Alexa discusses how meditation and mindfulness can help you navigate the stress of the holidays. We all want to have a perfect holiday season, which can cause a lot of stress and frustration.
