An all new Appreciation Month is upon us here at Cinema Degeneration and this time we are delving into the twisted works and mind of the one and only Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg whose career started in the late 1960's! It's a month long celebration of all things body horror, strange killers, telekinesis, rampant diseases, sexual perversions, more body horror, technological mutations, oh and did we mention body horror??? Our 3rd episode is based upon his titanic effort with the 1981 classic "SCANNERS".  Starring Michael Ironside, Jennifer O'Neill, Patrick McGoohan, Lawrence Dane, and Stephen Lack.  A rmovie that generated two official and two unofficial sequels. It's a twisted tale of a small group of special people whose thoughts can kill with a telepathic ability called 'scanning' and their fight against those that would see them used as weapons.  Containing special effects not for the squeamish or faint of heart, we assure you.   If that doesn't sound intriguing to you, then you've got to check your pulse because you may already be dead. Our deep dive discussion and dissection on this film is headed off by Cameron Scott and Eric Phillips, the sometimes hosting duo of the show "Sequel Too, Deja Vu". Buckle in because it's going to be a wild ride!   "All right. We're gonna do this the scanner way. I'm gonna suck your brain dry! "

n this episode of Monsters Up North, Dan and Sam Munster head straight into the sticky, squirming horror of The Fly, the gloriously grotesque sci-fi nightmare directed by David Cronenberg.Dan and Sam dig into what makes this remake such a standout in ‘80s body horror—how Jeff Goldblum turns Seth Brundle's slow, tragic unraveling into something heartbreakingly human, and why Geena Davis brings so much emotional weight to the chaos. From the iconic teleportation accident to the stomach-churning transformation scenes, Dan and Sam break down the practical effects that still make audiences wince decades later. But it's not just about the gore (though yes, they absolutely talk about that scene). The guys explore the deeper themes—obsession, disease, decay, and what it really means to lose yourself piece by piece. Is it a love story? A cautionary tale about unchecked ambition? Or just one of the most beautifully disgusting horror films ever made?Expect sharp takes, a few laughs, and plenty of appreciation for one of horror's most unforgettable transformations. If you love practical effects, tragic monsters, and films that crawl under your skin and stay there, this episode is for you.

It's a twisted tale of a scientist gone mad that results in a botched experiment that transmutes the man into a monstrous insect. Not for the squeamish or faint of heart, we assure you. There is quite nothing else like this movie, a strange blend of comedy and horror that is equal parts funny, creepy, outright gross, and it deserves way more love than it currently gets. If we were to strip away the underlying soap opera tone, the hammy performances, and the slapstick comedy, this movie would be frightening. Devin with her amazing career that has spanned throughout the entertainment industry with various highlights: from being a former Playboy Playmate to having a relationship with Prince, plus much, much more.Let's take a trip back to the “Golden Era” of horror where special effects and makeup were top notch! No CGI, no AI, but straight up blood pumps and prosthetics as to where you would believe it's actually happening. Devin, who plays Clarissa – a central part of this cult classic cult horror movie, who delivered her role perfectly. She mentioned some of the physical (and psychological) challenges while filming and acting on set. My interpretation is that this movie has David Cronenberg written all over it, it's that good. However, this is not a Cronenberg film, just good ole' frightening horror with some bizarre twists. Make sure to catch this comedy horror on Fandango at Home and on Tubi. Also, stop by Devin's Instagram page and show her your appreciation for her legendary acting.

Body horror has always been the unruly cousin at the horror family reunion—the one everyone side‑eyes but can't stop gossiping about later. David Cronenberg practically built the house this cousin lives in, wallpapered it with viscera, and handed out the keys to generations of filmmakers who gleefully keep the tradition alive. Enter TOGETHER (2025), a film that doesn't just dip a toe into the subgenre—it cannonballs in, using the human body as both battleground and blunt instrument.According to IMDb, the story follows Tim and Millie, a couple who decide that moving to the country will fix their relationship—because that always works out well in horror movies. Naturally, instead of fresh air and farmers' markets, they stumble into an “unnatural force” that threatens not only their love but their very flesh. Nothing says couples therapy like eldritch corruption nibbling at the edges of your anatomy.Penned and directed by Michael Shanks, TOGETHER stars real‑life spouses Dave Franco and Alison Brie, proving that nothing tests a marriage quite like acting out supernatural bodily doom together. Damon Herriman joins the fun, rounding out a cast that critics have been applauding with gusto. With glowing reviews rolling in, your co‑hosts dive into the film's squirm‑inducing delights—joined by award‑winning actor Dan Lench, who brings his own flair to the dissection.

Our 1st episode is on a very intense thriller and more recent directorial effort with the shocking 2022 release "CRIMES OF THE FUTURE".  Starring Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart.  It's an odd tale of an alternative future where the human body has learned to adapt to an overly synthetic environment with new organ transformations and mutations.  Thus, turning these new mutations into avant-garde performance pieces to a public where 'surgery is the new sex.'  Not for the squeamish or faint of heart, we assure you. This week we're joined by actor, drag queen, and Debbie Harry fanatic, Love Connie, for a look at David Cronenberg's sexy and sadistic meditation on horror, television, and society: Videodrome. The early 1980s saw a revolution in consumer video. Small UHF stations broadcast trashy movies at night to compete with the larger VHF networks. VCRs and cable introduced theatrical films to the home market uncut for broadcast. Canadian media theorist, Marshall McLuhan, had some real deep thoughts on what that would mean for our society and how it would change our consciousness. Cronenberg saw a movie in there and he cast James Woods and Debbie Harry as pawns in a game played by shadowy figures using television signals to physically transform the viewers. Max Renn is an executive for CIVIC-TV, a small UHF station in Toronto, a station that broadcast violent and pornographic content. He's on the lookout for the next sensation that'll broaden his audience and he stumbles on to what appears to be a snuff show called Videodrome. It's nothing but brutality, no plot, no characters, just violence. The deeper he looks into it, the worse his hallucinations become. What's real? What's fantasy? Does it even matter? What is Videodrome doing to him? A movie mixed with dark humor, body horror, and social commentary, the film hysterically skewers soul-sucking jobs, corporate nonsense, and the fixation with wellness products, making it significant for those in the grind. It's fun, it's trippy, it's brilliant, and in essence it's a cult-worthy indie movie that deserves a lot of praise. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Paige Bourne who plays Luke's apprehensive girlfriend in this twisted, psychological mind spank of a movie. With the David Cronenberg style body horror, you will not want to miss this one.Paige and I talked about her role in the film, the limits that were pushed on their characters, how each special effect sequence was completed, and much more. With intense performances by the actors in this film, I can tell that each and every person was committed to delivering their roles. So much so that I was (and still am) convinced that the Kombucha drink is not good for anyone. I could be wrong, but I still have my doubts.

Welcome back to the Video Store! We're kicking off the New Year with a look at some of the films that inspired the hit television series Stranger Things. Get your Eggos, Reese's Pieces, and settle in for some classic films that helped to give Stranger Things its strange, yet familiar aesthetic and themes. For this episode, we're only focusing on season one, so don't worry if you've not gotten to watch the final season just yet! However, if you've not watched Stranger Things season one, be advised that there are spoilers ahead for that season!E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)One of the biggest films of the 1980s and an inspiration for Stranger Things is Steven Spielberg and Melissa Mathison's iconic film, E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Capturing wonder, fear, and warmth so well, this is a film whose influence was felt well into the 90s. Stranger Things draws aesthetic inspiration from E. T. while also pulling from its fish-out-of-water story. Scanners (1981)David Cronenberg's cult sci-fi horror film, Scanners, is another point of inspiration for The Duffer Brothers. This film about psychics, scientific intrigue, and political power serves as an inspirational palette of ideas for Stranger Things that the Duffers have inverted, mashed up, and made their own. This is a film that also has a great influence on the later seasons of Stranger Things, but we'll cover those when we get there. Halloween (1978)This is the film that really caused the slasher genre to take off, but John Carpenter's first massive success also gives Stranger Things a good bit of its aesthetics. From monster-in-shadow cinematography to several meta uses of John Carpenter's work, Halloween has its fingerprints on Stranger Things. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)Perhaps the greatest influence on Stranger Things' aesthetic and storytelling is Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street. With two Nancys, two jocks with a baseball bat, and more things that won't even show up until later seasons of the series, A Nightmare on Elm Street has invaded the minds of the Duffer Brothers. Honorable MentionsStranger Things draws inspiration from so many films that we love here at the Video Store that we've already covered them on previous episodes! Check out my coverage of both versions of It in my Summer of Stephen King and Not Quite Retro episodes. Flack talked about John Carpenter's The Thing in his Halloween Spirit episode. I discussed Stand By Me in my Film Friendships show, Alien in my Wonder Women episode, and Jaws in my Summer Spookies show. Thanks for joining us here at the Video Store Podcast for these strange, but familiar films. We hope you enjoy our selections this week. Oh, and that flashing lightbulb? Must just be a short. We'll change it out later. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! This post is public so feel free to share it. This is a public episode. There are very few critics that are able to effortlessly move between writing about novels, movies, TV shows, non-fiction, politics, culture, life, ethics and more. But today's political climate and attention economy that seems to demand more and more from those who aim to catalogue the winds that drive our culture, requires just that: an ability to place different forms of media, fictional and not, in conversation with each other, to develop cohesive criticism of the present moment. Becca Rothfeld is one of those critics. As the non-fiction book critic at the Washington Post, she has taken on everything from works of philosophy to political memoirs to postmodern novels to as recently as last week, The West Wing. Becca's criticism brings a steady hand to analyzing often chaotic and multifarious narratives, and is grounded in her Philosophy background. Reading her, it's immediately obvious that no piece of culture is off limits, and she's willing to mine even the most banal texts to find some sort of value -- and that value for her comes in the form of a deeply nuanced critique of how we live.Becca's 2024 essay collection, All Things Are Too Small, published by Macmillan, is a celebration of excess. Her subjects range from Marie Kondo, to Sally Rooney, to David Cronenberg, to love. Through this diverse cast of characters, her thesis is clear, and as you'll soon hear in the interview, the collection somehow brings together disparate ideas to create a sort of manifesto of liberal artmaking that often encourages you to introspect about not only your cultural consumption but also your habits, ethics, and politics… the hallmark of an effective essay collection. Becca and I sat down to primarily talk about and read from her book, and we touch on several of my favorite essays from the collection, as well as her writing on other platforms. We also speak about one of our shared obsessions, the novelist Norman Rush, as well as the writer whom everyone seems to have read these days, Sally Rooney. But there comes a point towards the end of the conversation where we turn to the present moment; and like all of my favorite episodes of cultural mixtapes, Becca starts to essentially perform criticism on the present moment, dissecting the ways in which political movements in the United States are influencing artmaking in various genres; and our conversation, albeit slightly dated, elucidated some prescient truths that are becoming more and more obvious as we continue to explore what this unique political and cultural moment has in store.

Recorded live at the Toronto International Film Festival, David Peck sits down with filmmaker Bryan Fuller to discuss Dust Bunny, Fuller's darkly playful and deeply personal feature debut. What begins as a conversation about genre influences, Frankenstein, Blade Runner and Gremlins, turns inward, as Fuller reflects on childhood fear, imagination, and fairy tales. Together they explore how the film reframes monsters as emotional realities rather than fantasy creatures, and how humour, wonder, and visual style create both distance and healing. Dust Bunny emerges as a story for adults that is frightening, funny, and so tender. Bryan Fuller is an acclaimed writer, producer, and filmmaker celebrated for his visually striking, emotionally complex storytelling. He is best known as the creator of genre-defining television series including Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, and Dead Like Me, as well as his work on Star Trek: Discovery and American Gods. Across television, Fuller has built a reputation for blending dark humour, heightened fantasy, and deeply human themes, often exploring identity, trauma, and transformation through bold, imaginative worlds. With Dust Bunny, his feature-film debut, Fuller brings his singular voice to cinema. Premiering at TIFF's Midnight Madness, the film merges fairy tale, horror, and wit into a deeply personal story rooted in childhood fear and resilience. Whether working in television or film, Fuller continues to push genre boundaries, crafting stories that are visually lush, emotionally resonant, and unafraid to confront the monsters—real and imagined—that shape us.David Peck is a writer, speaker, and award-winning podcaster who works at the intersection of storytelling, social change, and meaningful dialogue. It's Die Hard in a diner! This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK we're discussing David Cronenberg's masterful 2005 film A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, a story that begins (and ends) with a DIE HARD-type scenario…and goes deep and hard on the consequences of surviving such an event. Mild mannered family man Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) owns and runs a diner in the small, Norman Rockwellian town of Millbrook, Indiana, where he lives a quiet, happy life with his wife Edie (Maria Bello) and their two children, teenage son Jack (Ashton Holmes) and a young daughter Sarah (Heidi Hayes). However, Tom's seemingly idyllic existence is shattered when he thwarts an attempted robbery at the diner, killing two murderous criminals in the process. The local media laud Tom as a hero, and the subsequent press attention results in the appearance of sinister Philadelphia mobster Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris), who believes that “Tom Stall” is in fact “Joey Cusack” a fellow mobster from his past. As Fogerty and his henchmen begin threatening Tom and his family, much of the subsequent tension stems from the uncertainty as to who Tom really is…and what he intends to do about this escalating threat to those he loves. The guys discuss their favorite Cronenberg films and where this particular picture fits within the auteur's oeuvre. They talk about the myriad DIE HARD connections in the ‘DIE HARD DNA' section, discuss its various themes, its provocative presentation of violence and sex, and the remarkable performances. Awards are handed out in the ‘DIE HARD Oscars' and events culminate with the ‘Double Jeopardy' quiz! Subscribe to Does It Fly? Pod: https://www.youtube.com/@doesitflypod?sub_confirmation=1On DOES IT FLY?, we explore the science and story logic behind your favorite pop culture topics. Today, we're looking at whether the science and story logic behind the Upside Down from Netflix's Stranger Things could work! The final season of Stranger Things has finally arrived on Netflix, and we know it was worth the wait. Stranger Things season 5 might be the most anticipated new season of a Netflix series in history. And with good reason. An instant sensation from when it first premiered in 2016, the kids from Hawkins have captivated new audiences and nostalgia enthusiasts alike with their unique blend of prestige TV storytelling and nods to classic directors like Steven Spielberg, David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, Joe Dante, and more. And central to Stranger Things lore is the Upside Down, the weird parallel dimension that lurks alongside the fictional Hawkins, Indiana. So how does this relate to hard science concepts like string theory, dark matter, or the fundamental forces of the universe? And since one of the reasons Stranger Things has endured for nearly a decade is just how well the lore works, we'll take a deep dive into the concepts and behind-the-scenes facts that make it all hang together.   Check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? to learn more!https://youtu.be/dXNJsDMCICoFOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! Hang onto your slipcases, because Blake Howard and critic and podcaster Drew Taylor discuss the provocation and conflict of David Cronenberg's A History of Violence. A History of ViolenceIn David Cronenberg's subtly provocative film, one of his most celebrated, all is not as it initially seems. In his first of many collaborations with the director, Viggo Mortensen delivers a highly nuanced performance as Tom Stall, a small-town husband and father who is hailed as a hero when he kills the would-be perpetrators of a violent robbery. But how did this ordinary family man dispatch them with such skill? Working with an exceptional cast that also includes Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and William Hurt, Cronenberg slyly deconstructs the mythos of the American action hero, posing elemental questions about identity, human nature, and the violence that we both abhor and can't look away from.DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital restoration of the international cut, supervised by director of photography Peter Suschitzky and approved by director David Cronenberg, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrackOne 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special featuresAudio commentary featuring CronenbergNew interview with screenwriter Josh Olson, conducted by writer-producer Tom BernardoExcerpts of Cronenberg and actor Viggo Mortensen in conversation at the 2014 Toronto International Film FestivalActs of Violence, a documentary on the making of the film, featuring behind-the-scenes footageThree featurettesDeleted scene with commentary by CronenbergTrailerEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingPLUS: An essay by critic Nathan LeeNew cover by Connor WillumsenDREW TAYLOR is a reporter for The Wrap.
