I came across Grazia's masterpiece of cinema Body Odyssey and was immediately blown away. The story, the acting and everything was like if David Lynch and David Cronenberg made a film about female body building. I know how that sounds and, I had to have her on the pod to talk. Because I was part of multiple people interviewing her, I only had 20 mins to chat, but, as you could tell I could easily talk for another hour. If you can get a chance, check out Body Odyssey, now making the rounds at film festivals. If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. I do free movie giveaways, mini movie reviews and more! Also, I decided to dabble in making my own slasher film called “Bishop's Day”. Check out the Instagram page for updates.
THE SWIMMER (1968) We dive deep in to The Swimmer and discuss and analyze, maybe just a little bit the glorious film directed by Frank Perry, based on a screenplay by Eleanor Perry, from the 12 page short story by John Cheever. "Well-off ad man Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) is visiting a friend when he notices the abundance of backyard pools that populate their upscale suburb. Ned suddenly decides that he'd like to travel the eight miles back to his own home by simply swimming across every pool in town."If you're reading this I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. David Cronenberg's 'Videodrome' remains a shockingly prescient vision of the world we're living in now: technology overlords using computerized developments for their own nefarious means...except in the case of 1983 Toronto, personal enrichment isn't the end game: elimination of the freaks and geeks is. Featuring a tour-de-force performance from James Woods and an impressive commitment to allowing viewers to experience the unfolding story as it happens to Woods' Max Renn, the film also has a hauntingly simple and utterly perfect score by frequent Cronenberg collaborator Howard Shore. Claire and Gavia delve into David Cronenberg's fascinating erotic thriller Crash, starring James Spader as a man who develops a fetish for car crashes. Divisive and controversial when it first came out in 1996, it's now regarded as one of Cronenberg's greatest films, celebrated for its peculiar characters and unique brand of sexuality.
[REBROADCAST FROM April 16, 2025] Writer and director David Cronenberg's new film "The Shrouds" is partly inspired from the grief of losing his wife in recent years. The film follows a grieving businessman named Karsh who invents a way to connect with the dead. Cronenberg discusses, alongside actor Diane Kruger, who stars in the film. "The Shrouds" is now streaming on the Criterion Channel.

FLESH WISH, 4min., UK Directed by Timothy Benjamin Slessor An experimental horror inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, David Cronenberg and Clive Barker, this music video / short details in an abstract way the summoning of demons through a ritual performed behind the locked doors of a 1970s terraced house. What motivated you to make this film? Several factors! Firstly, I wanted to make something visual to accompany the release of my album. Secondly, I wanted to experiment with a lot of different ideas and techniques, but importantly have a finished piece of work to show for it, not just a bunch of tests. Thirdly I wanted to see how I could kind of corrupt and pervert generative ai platforms and work them into my editing and animation / vfx practise and finally I wanted to make something that would surprise and confound my friends and colleagues! From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? It was about three to four months of laborious work, mostly in after effects and premiere. I had to create all of the images and heavily distort and rework them and the editing was done frame-by-frame. About 6 months after it was finished I considered going back and tweaking some things but one look at the edit sequence was enough to convince me to leave well alone! How would you describe your film in two words!? Quite fleshy. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? The hardest thing was just getting it finished! It was so hard to create enough interesting images and scenes, especially given the extremely fast cut-rate. I kept trimming the track down (ultimately from around 5 mins to about 3'45 I think) just so I could get it done (I had to keep pushing the release of the album back too as a result). Today we're reviewing Scanners (1981) — David Cronenberg's cult classic about mind control, psychic battles, and one of the most shocking special effects scenes in horror history.Released in 1981, Scanners tells the story of Cameron Vale (played by Stephen Lack), a man with powerful telepathic and telekinetic abilities who is recruited by a mysterious corporation to hunt down other psychics — known as “scanners.” But things take a dark turn when he faces off against the menacing Darryl Revok (Michael Ironside), a rogue scanner with deadly ambitions.Known for its unforgettable exploding head scene, Scanners has become a cornerstone of Cronenberg's career, blending science fiction, body horror, and paranoia. The film explores themes of corporate control, government experiments, and the dangers of psychic power — all wrapped up in eerie atmosphere and practical effects that still hold up today. If you're a fan of 80s horror, cult classics, or Cronenberg's unique brand of body horror, this episode is for you!

The Fantabulous Four unite once again for another gooey, gory, geek-out session — and this week, we tackle the 1986 horror/sci-fi gem The Fly, directed by David Cronenberg and starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. We explore the film's unforgettable body horror, the tragic love story at its core, and why this movie still holds up nearly 40 years later. Things get philosophical, gross, and even a little sad — plus, the team gets into their usual off-topic madness, including some wild theories about teleportation and what really makes horror effective.

In this episode, we dive into three of 2025's most provocative and stylistically distinct films—Friendship, The Phoenician Scheme, and David Cronenberg's The Shrouds. While wildly different in tone and genre, these films share an undercurrent of paranoia, grief, and fractured connection in the modern age.We begin with Friendship, a quiet yet emotionally raw exploration of human bonds strained by time, trauma, and unspoken truths. Then we unpack the labyrinthine mystery of The Phoenician Scheme, a neo-noir political thriller that channels Cold War conspiracies into a stylish, cerebral puzzle about control and deception. Finally, we close with The Shrouds, Cronenberg's return to techno-horror, where mourning and surveillance intertwine in disturbing ways. From character breakdowns and thematic analysis to directorial styles and visual storytelling, we explore how these films challenge our ideas of intimacy, mortality, and trust in an increasingly disconnected world.Tune in for a deep dive into cinema's darker corners—and the ghosts we carry with us.Feel free to email at silverscreenvideopodcast@gmail.com with any comments or thoughts. On paper, the set-up for this movie seems fairly conventional: a mild-mannered small-town diner owner named Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) is living an idyllic life in the Indiana countryside with his wife Edie (Maria Bello) and two children when suddenly one night just before closing....two thugs enter his diner and start threatening everyone, start to get violent...and Tom channels the hero inside him to dispatch them and save everyone, then becoming a local hero known all around which starts to attract some attention from the wrong people who go after him and his family. It almost sounds inspiring....or quirky....or maybe the setup for your typical Liam Neeson action vehicle post-2010. :/ But of course, it's ALL about the execution and thanks to director David Cronenberg (The Fly, Eastern Promises, Naked Lunch) adapting this story from a hyperviolent graphic novel, it's anything BUT conventional. Also co-starring Ed Harris and William Hurt who received an Oscar nominaion for his performance, this is a tense psychological thriller about one man, his violent nature, and how it affects those around him. It's the height of summer and the days are heating up… Better head to the graveyard and hang with the B-Men (B stands for Barker, of course). We're cooling down with the oiled up monsters of 1990's NIGHTBREED, which some rightfully call “monster X-Men” while others questionably call “creatures I wouldn't kick out of bed.” You get tons of cool monster designs, David Cronenberg as a serial killer psychiatrist, and of course the beloved Doug Bradley as the leader of the pack. Long live the new flesh! Wythe and Chris are back with Evan on Left of the Projector for another film discussion. This time we dissect David Cronenberg's 1983 body horror / tech and sex anxiety classic, VIDEODROME! From Left of the Projector – In this episode, I join Chris and Wythe from the Why We Roll Podcast to analyze David Cronenberg's cult classic Videodrome. We explore its themes of technology, media, and the human condition, discussing the film's initial reception and rise to cult status. We examine the character of Max Ren, played by James Woods, and the male gaze's implications on sexuality and power dynamics, as well as the film's philosophical layers surrounding identity. We also consider Cronenberg's body horror elements as metaphors for existential dilemmas, particularly as Max navigates the influence of Videodrome. The conversation draws parallels between the film and contemporary media technologies, questioning whether they enhance or diminish our humanity. We conclude by reflecting on the lasting impact of Videodrome and its relevance in today's media landscape. Now it is available on VOD and streaming for all to see. From IMDB: “Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, builds a device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud.”THE SHROUDS was written and directed by David Cronenberg and has a fabulous international cast including lead Vincent Cassell, Diane Kruger, and Guy Pierce. Receiving good reviews in what critics are calling his most intimate and biographical film, your co-hosts take a look at Cronenberg's latest.

This week we're joined by Halle Kiefer, comedy writer and co-host of the podcast Ruined for another trip north to Canada for a look at the formative years of David Cronenberg. We're watching Rabid, starring Marilyn Chambers, famous for her appearance in the 70's adult film hit, Behind The Green Door. Here Cronenberg runs up against a minor moral panic when a film critic questions the government's willingness to fund his films. Marilyn Chambers pushes back against a studio system that can't find the courage to cast an actress from adult films in a major studio release. A woman receives an emergency skin graft that somehow transforms into a phallic proboscis in her armpit that feeds her like a vampire and spreads a new form of rabies which turns its victims into enraged zombies that will stop at nothing to kill everything that moves.Cronenberg is still figuring it out in this movie which despite its outrageous premise and lurid stunt-casting, could be seen as a meditation on the rise of second-wave feminism, his place in that world, and his impact on that movement as a man trying to navigate the changing world. In this episode of 'Need Some Introduction,' host Victor, along with co-host Darren, delve into episode 4, titled 'Strawberry,' of the Apple TV series 'Smoke.' They analyze the episode's complex narrative, exploring the blurred lines between reality and fiction. Victor emphasizes his theory that much of what we see may be fabricated from the protagonist Dave's book. Key moments discussed include Dave's inappropriate behavior during a lecture, Calderon's ongoing investigation, and the absurd and surreal final scenes, which suggest a fantasy element. The episode also covers how audiences might react to these developments, the upcoming introduction of John Leguizamo's character, and ends with a brief detour into the new season of 'Dexter Resurrection' and anticipation for upcoming films such as Ari Aster's 'Edington' and David Cronenberg's 'The Shrouds.' mailto:needssomeintroduction@gmail.com 00:00 Introduction and Current Shows 00:43 Murderbot Finale Discussion 02:52 Superman Movie Review 06:51 Superman Movie Critique 13:01 Superman Movie Comparisons 30:57 Smoke Episode 4: Strawberry 34:11 Dramatic Scene Analysis 34:25 Dave's Insane Lecture 35:11 Freddy's Disastrous Reaction 36:24 Calderon's Strategy and Freddy's Stockpile 38:22 Dave's Suspicious Behavior 42:26 Convenience Store Encounter 47:00 Calderone's Investigation 59:28 Dexter Resurrection Discussion 01:03:55 Upcoming Movies and Final Thoughts
This is certainly something "buzz-worthy"! A brilliant reinterpretation of a classic film that not only put a clever spin on the original premise but also added...color! In the tradition of upgraded horror masterpieces like The Thing and The Blob, we have a look at David Cronenberg's body horror bonanza, The Fly! A scientist, played by the inimitable Jeff Goldblum (but yeah, I will definitely imitate him during this podcast!) has a little mishap while testing his invention and slowly, gradually transforms into a giant fly! Not very convenient while he's trying to romance Geena Davis, but the script, performances, music and goopy makeup effects are really top-notch here. I absolutely love this movie, and I think you'll love my podcast episode, which is so good it's sure to draw a swarm of listeners like flies to a pile of...er...ice cream sundaes with chocolate syrup and fresh fruit toppings! Huh? What did you think I was gonna say??
Imagine it's 1993, and Hollywood is dominated by iconic TV shows and movies like Beavis and Butthead, Power Rangers, and Jurassic Park. Amid this, there's a fascinating story about a film that was never made—David Cronenberg's adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. In this episode of 'That Was Pretty Scary,' Jon Lee Brody delves into Cronenberg's unique vision, which aimed to honor Shelley's legacy by focusing on real human emotions like grief and shame. Despite his compelling approach, Cronenberg's Frankenstein never came to fruition due to a lack of studio backing. Join us as we explore what could have been, compare it to existing adaptations, and even speculate on casting choices. This thought-provoking episode reimagines a lost cinematic masterpiece while paying homage to one of horror's most influential stories.
