Rep. Andy Biggs says that keeping Speaker Pro Tempore McHenry for 90 days and empowering him to be a temporary solution is “absolutely not” an option. The Freedom Caucus member says it is not a popular option for most of the House Republicans, that outside of Freedom Caucus “echo chamber,” members think the McHenry option is “a bad idea, it's dangerous,” and that Republicans should vote a new Speaker in and “get it over and done with.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The past two weeks have been a historical one for the House of Representatives. Last week, a band of dissident Republicans voted with House Democrats to remove Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, leaving the office vacant. In his stead, a never-before House rule turned to a secret list of temporary successors that identified Congressman Patrick McHenry as the new Speaker Pro Tempore. But what exactly he is able to do in this role—and what it means for Congress's ability to pass much needed legislation—is far from clear. To discuss this new predicament, Lawfare Senior Editor Scott R. Anderson sat down with Brookings Institution Senior Fellow and Lawfare Senior Editor Molly Reynolds. They talked about the history of the rule behind McHenry's appointment, what authority its authors intended for it to provide, and what it means for Israel, Ukraine, and the pending government shutdown.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Recentemente, o Brasil assumiu a presidência pro tempore do Mercado Comum do Sul.

In this episode we talk about the tax consequences of student loan forgiveness. Generally, debt forgiveness is treated as income, and is therefore taxable. If the Biden Administration's current plan to forgive portions of student loans comes to fruition, the forgiven amount would normally be taxable. Provisions have been made to make student loan forgiveness tax free at the federal level. Some states, including North Carolina, would still treat the loan forgiveness as taxable, and borrowers would owe state taxes on the forgiven amounts. We discuss that issue, along with other issues related to taxes and higher education in North Carolina, along with the general business climate and taxation in the state of North Carolina with Senator Phil Berger, President Pro Tempore of the NC Senate.
A historic, sweeping memoir from United States Senator Patrick Leahy, currently the chamber's longest-serving senator and President Pro Tempore. In his landmark memoir The Road Taken, Patrick Leahy looks back on a life lived on the front lines of American politics. As the senior-most member and de facto dean of the chamber, Senator Leahy has been a key author of the American story. Leahy established himself as a moral leader and liberal pioneer over four decades spanning nine presidential administrations. American history comes alive in this gripping story of a master political leader and consummate legislator. Leahy takes you inside the room as pivotal moments in our nation's history play out, from the post-Watergate reform era to path breaking Supreme Court confirmations to stress tests like the impeachment of President Clinton, 9/11 and Congress's role in greenlighting a disastrous war in Iraq, the January 6th Capitol insurrection, and both impeachment trials of Donald Trump-one of which Senator Leahy presided over, a historic first. Beautifully written and filled with wonderful stories, Leahy's memoir is populated by a larger-than-life cast of characters. We meet the major players who would shape the course of American politics, including every President from Ford onward, a fresh-faced Ted Kennedy, a dying Hubert Humphrey, a thirty-three-year-old son of Scranton named Joe Biden, a quick-witted Barry Goldwater, a freshman Senator and trash-talking gym-mate named Barack Obama, and a scrappy newcomer by the name of Bernie Sanders. Through these characters and many more, we see the rise, gradual decline, and push for redemption of a United States Senate that Leahy learns at an early age can be the "nation's conscience." The Road Taken is also a moving personal portrait. Born in Vermont in 1940, Leahy got his first taste of politics at age six after riding his tricycle into the Governor's office. Twenty-eight years later he became the first Democrat and youngest person ever elected to the United States Senate from Vermont. He writes movingly of his wife of nearly sixty years, Marcelle, his family life, his beloved home state of Vermont, and his unexpected life as an actor with cameos in five Batman movies. Despite being born legally blind in one eye, Leahy became an accomplished photographer, shooting history as he witnessed it. His intimate portraits illustrate the book, showcasing history through the lens of his life. Full of wisdom and insight, The Road Taken ranks among the greatest political memoirs, revealing a momentous life marked by hard decisions made without regret

What a great Episode #25! In this wonderful episode, Nancy and Jose are joined in studio by one of California's and San Diego's leaders, Toni Atkins, the President pro tempore of the California State Senate. We learn so much about Toni in this episode, including her humble beginnings in southwestern Virginia, the daughter of a miner and a seamstress, living in a home without running water but overflowing with love and a passion for reading. To hear her share that one of her most prized possessions is her Mom's library card tells us all we need to know about her deeply rooted connection to books, reading, libraries and the value of a public education. Quite an incredible story from Toni. We also learn that her leadership on issues is very much about her lived experiences and why she fights so hard on poverty, health care, childcare, affordable housing and libraries, to name a few of her purposeful legislative initiatives. Listeners also hear about an amazing new program from California - the catalyst being the one and only Dolly Parton - called Imagination Library! This $68 million program will send a book monthly to 2.3 million students from ages 0-5! Talk about a smart investment into our collective futures! Here are some other amazing takeaways from the interview with Toni: - Affordable housing was 30 years in the making and it is going to take time to dig out- Affordable housing isn't just a humanitarian issue, it is an economic issue for every business- Libraries are not just about books, but essential access points for broadband, computers, and community centers - Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program has distributed over 183 million books! - The answers to the Rapid Fire questions! A truly great conversation from a wonderful gap minder. Thank you, Toni Atkins, for being passionate about literacy, gaps, your willingness to serve, and for joining us for the 25th episode of The Gap Minders!Enjoy this episode and be sure to subscribe to the show. Senator Smitherman and Judge Smitherman have poured into me as long as i can remember. Their eldest son Roger and i grew up and attended Ramsay High School together. So it gave me great pleasure to support Crystal as our Birmingham City Council Representative for District Six. Moreover, i have beamed with pride to see her hard work win her re-election to the seat and her peers elect her as President Pro-Tempore. Titusville has produced many of our City's most illustrious citizens and i have no doubt that Crystal's name will be in our Community's Hall of Fame one day!

Full Hour | Liz Preate-Havey, head of Montgomery County Republicans, returns to the Dom Giordano Program to lead off the second hour, to break down Biden's horrendous 2 hour press conference last night. First, Giordano and Preate-Havey focus on politics in Pennsylvania, discussing the lack of transparency offered by the Wolf administration, tying it to the national scale and pointing to similarities in the Biden administration. Then, Giordano and Preate-Havey discuss the political topics that suburban voters most care about, telling of the impact that inflation and Biden's handling of Coronavirus have on the upcoming midterms. In addition, Preate-Havey tells how she feels those in the Assembly are taking the letter sent by State Senator Jake Corman calling for the impeachment of District Attorney Larry Krasner. Then, President Pro Tempore of the Pennsylvania Senate Jake Corman returns to the Dom Girodano to provide an update on the letter he sent earlier this week to Pennsylvania Assembly, calling for an impeachment of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. First, Corman tells Giordano that Assembly has not been in this week, but the first steps for this to actually happen would be one member of Assembly filing for impeachment, which he does hope is a reality we will see next week. Corman takes us through the process of impeachment for Pennsylvania civil officials, and tells Giordano the importance of getting Krasner on the record at a hearing to help us understand why he continues to stand headstrong behind policies that have wreaked havoc on Philadelphians. Full Hour | To lead off the second hour, Bill Lawrence of BillLawrenceOnline.com rejoins the Dom Giordano Program to discuss multiple stories throughout the area. First, Lawrence and Giordano discuss the breaking news around Larry Krasner, with President of the Senate Jake Corman officially calling for his impeachment. Then, Giordano and Lawrence switch over to the real reason that Lawrence joined today, discussing a Zoom call by DelCo election officials, in which the leader admitted to breaking the law in the 2020 election. Lawrence takes us inside Delaware County, telling how politics are playing out in one of Philadelphia's largest suburban counties. Then, President Pro Tempore of Pennsylvania Senate Jake Corman returns to the Dom Giordano Program to discuss the groundbreaking letter sent to the Pennsylvania assembly requesting impeachment proceedings against Philadelphia County District Attorney Larry Krasner. First, Giordano asks Corman why he felt the need to address this issue, with Corman explaining the heinous result of policies enacted by the District Attorney. In the letter, Corman alleges that the recent spike in violent crime is a direct result of DA Krasner's policies and his refusal to perform the duties of his office in holding criminals accountable. Giordano and Corman discuss the next steps in the process, with Giordano asking whether Corman has his finger on the pulse of the assembly, and whether this can actually make it through the Statehouse. Senator Patrick Leahy, a Democrat from Vermont has announced he will not be running for a ninth term in the United States Senate next year. So what does that mean exactly? This means his open Senate seat for Vermont opens up the way for a new Democrat or Republican to represent the state of Vermont in the U.S. Senate for a six year term. Also Senator Leahy is the current President Pro Tempore of the Senate. To which he leads the Senate whenever the Vice President is not present in the chamber and in other circumstances. President Pro Tempore is the third person in the presidential line of succession after the Speaker of the House. Essentially, this elected position of the Senate is very important to the Senate functions and the Presidential line of succession as well as Vice Presidential duties. Leahy was first elected to the Senate in 1974 during the time of Watergate scandal and the Nixon presidency. This Senator has served from the age of thirty-four to when he retires from the Senate in 2022 or 2023 ; which he will be 82 years old. Guest: Carlos Ron, Venezuela Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs for North AmericaOn July 24, the 238th Anniversary of Simon Bolivar's birth, Mexico's president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador addressed an audience of foreign ministers and international dignitaries saying: Let's initiate a relationship in our hemisphere based on the premise of George Washington, according to which “nations should not take advantage of the misfortune of other peoples”.I am aware that this is a complex issue that requires a new political and economic outlook. The proposal is no more and no less than to build something similar to the European Union, but in accordance with our history, our reality, and our identities. In this spirit, the replacement of the OAS by a truly autonomous organization, not a lackey of anyone, but a mediator at the request and acceptance of the parties in conflict, in matters of human rights and democracy, should not be ruled out.Serving as President Pro Tempore of CELAC, AMLO re-convened members of the organization in Mexico City on September 18 after a four year "pause". President Nicolas Maduro attended the Summit representing Venezuela's democratically elected government. Much of the Summit's conversation focused on creating a unified Latin America and Caribbean economic bloc, similar to the European Union, free to trade in a multi-polar global framework.September 21 the world witnessed the opening of the 2021 United Nations General Assembly Debate. Thursday morning, 18 countries including Venezuela gathered to sign a declaration to uphold the founding principles of the United Nations. The countries are collectively known as the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter. And, late September Venezuela Dialogue resumed in Mexico City for a third round. It has been a powerful and evolutionary summer in the Americas! Join us for an informative and inspiring conversation about how unity and multilateralism are shaping current day Latin America and the Caribbean.(this episode was recorded between two international locations and contains occasional audio lapses).
President Pro Tempore of the Pennsylvania State Senate Jake Corman returns to the Dom Giordano Program to discuss the election review that continues to play out surrounding the voter reform and security. This week, it was reported that Corman and other Republicans would subpoena documents and hire a contractor to further the efforts of the investigation that hopes to dispel concerns and re-establish voter trust and security. Senator Corman explains that the investigation, unlike many media outlets would like one to believe, is a look forward and an effort to ultimately strengthen the way we elect our leaders rather than a look back at the 2020 election. In addition, Corman comments on whether there will ever be an adjustment to liquor laws away from state stores. (Photo by Getty Images) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
President Pro Tempore of the Pennsylvania Senate Jake Corman returns to the Dom Giordano Program after filing suit against the State over the Governor's powers in setting forth a masking mandate. The lawsuit argues that Alison Beam, the acting Health Secretary after Rachel Levine left for a Federal position, does not have the authority to issue the mandate. The order was a reversal of direction for the Wolf administration, as up until this point they have generally left decision up to local school districts. Corman explains why he has decided to join with Representative Jesse Topper and other parents to sue, and tells what he hopes to accomplish once all is said and done. Senator Jake Corman, President Pro Tempore of the Pennsylvania Senate, rejoins the Dom Giordano Program to discuss Governor Wolf's surprising decision to implement a mask mandate for Pennsylvania schools. Corman explains that he and other state Republicans did not see this coming, but suspected something may happen after lawmakers were summoned back to Harrisburg. Corman explains how Wolf was able to implement such an edict, and tells what Republicans in the state can do to push back. In addition, Corman explains the roles that school boards play in the new announcement and what power they have to enforce such an edict, and gives an update on the push by Pennsylvania Republicans to secure elections. On this week's episode of the Campbell Conversations, Grant Reeher speaks with Khalid Bey, the Democratic party candidate for Mayor of the City of Syracuse. Bey is currently a City Councilor-at-Large, President Pro Tempore of the Chamber and chair of the Economic Development Downtown and Metropolitan Planning Committee.
Elizabeth Brown was elected to Columbus City Council in 2015 and holds the office of President Pro Tempore. She's the executive director of the Ohio Women's Public Policy Network, a member of the Columbus Women's Commission, and serves on various committees, such as for the CelebrateOne Policy. An accomplished writer, Liz initially pursued a career in journalism, working for WOSU Public Radio and being published by New York Magazine. Eventually, she realized that her work wasn't satisfying her life calling and decided to follow in her father's footsteps by turning her hobby of politics into a career. To this day, she maintains that writing is one of the most important and practical skills a person can have. One thing led to another and she was able to turn her work as a Campaign Manager into a seat on the Columbus City Council, where she's now led the city through a pandemic and beyond. Our conversation covers her entire life story, from the stressful early years through to her city council job and beyond as we get into what the future might hold – both for the city and for Liz. We explore her gratitude for her difficult childhood, we grapple with the idea of a politician as someone who serves popular opinion versus someone who makes independent decisions based on what they believe is right, and we examine the benefits of injecting fresh, outsider perspectives into organizations and groups where things have gone stale. What Brett asks: [00:02:30] How did you get to where you are today? [00:05:10] Do you believe fresh, outside perspectives can be valuable in politics? [00:10:30] Let's go back to the beginning. Tell me about your childhood. [00:15:00] You talk about there being silver linings in the negatives of your upbringing but was that how you saw things at the time? [00:18:20] Did your parents maintain a good relationship after their divorce? [00:20:50] What were you like as a child once you started school? [00:23:55] Was your desire to follow in your dad's footsteps evident in childhood? [00:25:18] What was your mom's line of work? [00:28:00] What role have the arts had in your life? [00:29:50] What happened once you finished school and began thinking about your career? [00:35:20] What was your first job in the world of politics?
