What is Community Choice Aggregation?Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) is a system that allows local governments to purchase power directly from an energy supplier other than the existing utility. This means that while the existing utility continues to deliver the power, the CCA buys and generates the power itself, potentially from renewable sources. CCAs continue to pay fees to the existing utility for energy transmission and backup power. While not required, CCAs can set ambitious climate goals that exceed state-mandated targets and drive decarbonization efforts by investing in emerging clean energy technologies. CCAs can take risks to transform their energy sources and grid in ways that traditional investor-owned utilities may be reluctant to try. When successful, CCAs can reduce electric rates for consumers and drive investment in local energy programs. But CCAs without sufficient capital may face financial and operational challenges. CCA programs are authorized in various states, including California, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Virginia. How does it work?In states with enabling legislation, local governments can create a CCA by holding public hearings and passing a law authorizing CCAs. Participation in CCAs is voluntary, with most programs having opt-out provisions. This means customers are automatically enrolled in the program unless they choose to opt out and continue receiving electricity from their current supplier. Some CCAs may have opt-in provisions, requiring customers to actively enroll in the program. Customers under CCAs continue to receive delivery and maintenance services from their existing utility and receive a single utility bill reflecting the change in electricity generation sources and prices. What are the pros and cons?Advantages of CCAs include the potential for retail electric rate reductions, the ability to shift to greener power resources quickly, local control over electricity generation aligned with local goals, expanded consumer choices, and the potential to stimulate local job creation and renewable energy development. However, there are also challenges associated with CCAs, including dependence on enabling state legislation, navigating CCA regulations and ordinances, administrative costs, consumer confusion over opt-in and opt-out clauses, and potential resistance from utilities in traditionally regulated electricity states facing new competition from CCAs.What is Central Coast Community Energy?Central Coast Community Energy (3CE) is a CCA program that has procured and provided electricity to residents and businesses in Monterey, San Benito, Santa Cruz, and Santa Barbara counties in California since 2018. It is governed by board members who represent each community served by the agency.3CE recently approved a contract to build the world's largest Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) facility, which will provide 500 megawatts of energy storage. 3CE will reserve 200 megawatts of that capacity to help achieve its goal of serving 100% clean and renewable energy to its customers in Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara counties by 2030. The CAES technology uses underground caverns to store compressed air, which is later released to generate electricity, offering long-duration storage beyond the capabilities of lithium-ion batteries, and supporting grids reliant on intermittent renewable energy.Further ReadingEPA, Community Choice AggregationNational Renewable Energy Laboratory, Community Choice Aggregation: Challenges, Opportunities, and Impacts on Renewable Energy Markets (2019)CalCCA, Community Choice Aggregation (CCA): What is it?National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) Helping Communities Reach Renewable Energy Goals (Mow 2017)Local Energy Aggregation Network (LEAN), CCA by StateMetropolitan Area Planning Council (Boston, MA), Start a Community Choice Aggregation Program (2014)National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Status and Trends in the Voluntary Market (2020 data), presentation materials (Heeter 2021)Central Coast Community Energy (3CE), 3CE to Purchase 200MW of Long Duration Energy Storage from Hydrostor (2023) For a transcript, please visit https://climatebreak.org/municipal-investment-in-clean-energy-tech-through-community-choice-aggregation-with-rob-shaw/

Text your thoughts and questions!Being ethical is defined as conforming to a standard of what's right and good. While there are definitely certain practices that obviously fit that, there are also many grey areas that we may not agree with, but are not technically unethical practices either. In my conversation today with guest Sarah Heeter, our conversation of what it means to be an ethical coach naturally transitioned into being ethically aligned with colleagues, collaborators, and coaches. This week, episode 212 of the Positively LivingⓇ Podcast is about why you need to align ethically with your coach!Sarah K. Heeter is the founder & CEO of Podfox Media, a podcast production & strategic consultation company, & the co-host of the podcast Big Brave Business. She is a voice for business ethics, camaraderie and connection, and revolutionary leadership in entrepreneurship. In this episode of the Positively LivingⓇ Podcast, Sarah Heeter and I discuss the importance of defining your personal ethics and core values so that you can align yourself with others who have similar beliefs, both personally and professionally.Sarah and I cover the following topics:Ethical alignment and safety between coaches and mentors as a foundation for an effective partnership. How even though personal core values will naturally influence the values of your business, the focus should be on serving clients' needs over any personal agenda. Healing and emotional safety as prerequisites for growth and something coaches need to consider before pushing their clients' boundaries. Clarifying desired outcomes up front helps avoid misaligned intentions between a coach and client's goals. When it comes to personal ethics and ethical mentorship, the goal is to focus on and understand your own ethics first. This way you can find others who align with them: those who are the best fit for you.Could you use some support? Ready for a quick win and to try coaching with Lisa? Carrie Heeter, Ph.D., RYS200 and meditation designer in the tradition of Viniyoga has written a fascinating book called ‘An Inside Look at Meditation: Experiences for healing, support and transformation.” Amy and Carrie discuss what it means to have an interactive meditative experience and how this might be different than what most of us think of when we imagine going into meditation. It is a co-creation that can be guided by the meditation facilitator/ designer but leaves space for the meditator to create an experience in their own mind that can lead to self-discovery, transformation and even mental and physical healing. Carrie is a Research Scientist, a developer of Virtual Reality games and has authored over 100 books and peer reviewed articles as a scholar at Michigan State University for 27 years. Get ready to have your mind blown and heart opened in this interview. · Amy asks Carrie to help us understand what interactive gaming technology and this type of meditative experience have in common.· Carrie describes several different meditative practices that she has experienced, as well as designed for her students.· The intended outcomes vs. what really happens in the mind and heart of a person who has committed to this type of meditative practice is explained.· We discuss what are the short-term effects of this type of meditation, and what are the longer-term outcomes if one should choose to continue regularly for months or years.· The importance of having a seasoned mentor is discussed, and the training required to become proficient at creating both group meditative experiences and individual practices as a yoga therapist in the viniyoga tradition.· The breakdown of what you could expect if you were to give this type of meditation a try and how you could get started. If you would like to receive the free infographics and handouts that correspond to each episode on the Yoga Therapy Hour Podcast, please subscribe to our segmented email list. The printing industry is always changing and evolving! This week we have a great new episode of Imaging Of Things from EFI with our host Nick Benkovich, the prophet of print and packaging. He is joined by the president of Heeter, Kirk Schlecker to discuss the world of print, packaging, and more. Did you know Heeter is a full-service innovative provider of secure print, direct mail, and fulfillment solutions for gaming, insurance, retail, pharma, and education? They are a one-stop shop for all your printing and marketing needs. No stranger to the printing and fulfillment business though, Kirk worked for various top print and fulfillment companies in Chicago until he joined Heeter in January 2014. And it did not take long for him to make a real impact. He was able to lead the company to become the first commercial printer in the United States to successively install two of Richo's inkjet presses. Not only does Kirk oversee the company's manufacturing activities, sales, customer service, and information technology teams, but he is also a frequent panelist at industry events on software and inkjet technology. In this episode, hear Nick and Kirk talk about some of the future trends of the printing market as well as how to create diversification and growth within a business. But the discussion does not stop there! From adapting to the pandemic to finding a hobby with fishing, listen to the two talk about a wide array of interesting topics. Hear them cover the power of mailing services, positive business investments, and bridging the gap between being a manufacturer and an advisor with the customers. Together they also take a deep dive into how Kirk and his company have embraced the evolution of technology, adapted to changing markets, and become one of the most well-known names in the business! In the first episode of a new series, Campsite Conversations, my buddy and return guest, Casey Heeter and I talk all things outdoors live from our campsite in the Red River Gorge area of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Casey is a backpacking expert, having spent hundreds of nights in the woods, some of them being under -30 degrees for fucks sake. Casey, my fiance Sara and I along with Casey's dog Odin and Our dog Yose recently went on a backpacking trip in the Red River Gorge and Casey and I decided we should do a podcast from our back country campsite and I'm glad we did. We talked about Tents, Hammocks, Camping Ethics and Conservations. We talk about some of our favorite outdoors retailers like T. Hargrove Fly Fishing Shop and Quest in Louisville where Casey is from. We talk at some length about how much we love Cottage Vendors and small producers. And we finish up with a short conversation about the future of the Red River Gorge, and what a new resort that's being proposed might bring, both good and bad to the area.

Making a big life change is today’s topic. Laura’s guest, Kyle Heeter, shares her personal story of finding work she loved, falling out of love with it, and eventually making her way into new work she loves, again! During the course of this conversation, Laura and Kyle examine their beliefs about what is possible for all of us. Be sure to listen to the end, or you’ll miss a fascinating discussion about energy healing. Kyle shares how she loved nursing but didn’t feel like she was making the connection with people she wanted. She decided to stop and listen to what she really wanted. It wasn’t easy to admit to herself that she was anxious and nervous. She struggled to figure out how to leave a job she didn’t like. A health scare helped her make the change. A second time, she had a knee injury that helped her realize she wasn’t happy and had to leave that job. Lesson learned: It takes time. Paying attention to your emotions isn’t easy, and often can feel confusing. But it’s worth the effort. Making a change is healing and a significant part of the journey. Even (maybe especially) when know you have to make the change, but don’t always know exactly what’s to come. What do you do when your comfort zone is no longer comfortable? Kyle shares how she’s learned to recognize the discomfort for what it’s saying to her. Her tips are sure to help you, too. Taking time to be still and listen is key to paying attention. Today’s culture doesn’t always reward inward work and the decision to slow down and listen. What do we do when we realize that some of our long-held beliefs aren’t right for us? It’s powerful to acknowledge and taking small steps can help you get shed what no longer fits. Subtle, small changes count and often lead to major transformation. We can all relate about having confidence when we make changes. We want to feel good about it, but often worry that others may not understand. Kyle shares a personal story about how she was able to move past the fear. Kyle shares her journey to becoming an energy healer and what it’s like to work with her. Part of her process is evaluating what the energy of your body is saying. She can then help to clear out energy areas and allow a flow of better energy. It’s a process of opening to universal energy. Contact Kyle: Website Email Resources: Atomic Habits by James Clear The Field by Lynn McTaggart The Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton About Kyle: Kyle Heeter has worked as an RN/BSN in intensive care, emergency room, and family practice clinics for 20 years. Today, she is a Healing Touch Practitioner providing energy work both on-site and long distance through her private practice, Shift Energy Work. Kyle has found her passion for healing in providing heart-centered, intuitive, and holistic energy work. She believes that with mindful intention, we can change our vibrational patterns and habitual responses in order to become whole and that we each have the potential and power to consciously participate in the process of awareness, change, and growth. She lives in Fayetteville, West Virginia, with her husband and two incredible children.

Today's podcast was recorded as we head into the last month of the first quarter, which is a pretty busy time in the world of employee-ownership, since it is when many ESOP companies with a December 31st year-end start their valuation process. We are joined by Capital Trustees' Managing Director Rich Heeter who explains the role of the ESOP trustee in that process. We are also heading full swing into spring conference season. We just recently returned from the #ESOPPros ESOP Professionals Conference in New Orleans (as you can hear in Mini-cast 22). Coming up is many of The ESOP Association's chapter meetings: The Indiana Chapter meeting is in Carmel, IN on March 6th, the Mid-Atlantic Chapter meeting is in Charlottesville, NC from March 7th-8th, the New England Chapter meeting is Burlington, MA on March 25th, the Pennsylvania/ Delaware Chapter meeting is in State College, PA from March 27th-28th, and the New York/ New Jersey Chapter is in Rochester, NY on April 3rd. Then we all head to Pittsburgh from April 8th-11th for the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO) for their annual national conference, #NCEO19 (which you can hear all about in ESOP Podcast Episode 63.) A busy time of year, but one that we really enjoy.
In Episode 13 of The ESOP Mini-cast, Trevor Bare of Conrad Siegel [www.conradsiegel.com] joined us with a preview of the November 2018 Employee Ownership Exchange in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. We're pleased to report the conference was a success. In this episode we share Capital Trustees' Managing Director Rich Heeter's presentation at that conference on "The Roles and Responsibilities of ESOP Trustees." Rich had just returned from the national ESOP conference in Las Vegas, and shares the most up-to-date guidance on the liabilities for which trustees are responsible.

The December signing period packed all of the action, but both Virginia and Virginia Tech filled some needs on signing day. The Virginia basketball team keep rolling along, as the Cavaliers went to Tallahassee and picked up a 12th straight ACC win. When -- or if -- will the Cavaliers lose? Teel talks about where Old Dominion and William and Mary need to improve to make runs through conference tournaments, and the guys talk about the thrilling Super Bowl matchup. Music: Slow Burn by Kevin MacLeod.
David Teel and Jonathan Heeter chat about the ACC football schedule, which was released on Wednesday. Can Bronco Mendenhall achieve similar levels of success in year three despite losing starting quarterback Kurt Benkert as well as Micah Kiser and Quin Blanding on defense. Teel talks about his surprises and disappointments a third of the way through league play. Finally, Teel gives his Super Bowl picks and discusses the struggles of the Pittsburgh Steelers and their coach Mike Tomlin.

One thing never changes: things always change. Leaders must proactively recognize changing currents and make decisions for the most effective approaches to ministry. We may need to recast our focus or prayerfully make a new strategy. Is God calling you to make a shift in children's ministry programs? This workshop will help you identify vision, communicate the change and provide an effective, practical case study of a ministry program that has undergone a missional change in order to reach its community for Christ. Denise is a US missionary appointed by the Assemblies of God to reach communities for Jesus Christ. Denise previously has served as children’s pastor at Sound Life Church and has many years of experience as a school teacher. Through her relational style of ministry leadership, Denise’s passion is to encourage parents, lay leaders, directors, and senior pastors to lead the children in their community in a growing relationship with Christ. One of her goals is to influence churches to expand their vision for children and families, assisting them to reach outside the walls of their church into the community.
