Last author Prof. Guy Leschziner¹ joins PN podcast editor Dr. Amy Ross Russell to the wide variety of sleep-related disorders: insomnia, hypersomnolence, and sleep-related movement disorders. For Ashley Roberts, dance was her self-expression and meditation. Then, at the height of her Pussycat Dolls fame the art she loved became tangled up in extreme burnout and body shaming. In this chat with Fearne, Ashley explains how discovering breathwork brought her back to herself after a period of intense anxiety and physical ill-health. Now, the Pussycat Dolls are making a comeback in their 40s, and this time round they're doing it with a bigger focus on having more fun and giving fewer f*cks. There's a lot of mental illness in her family, so Ashley talks about the mental health toolkit she's creating for herself, as well as the grief of losing her dad to suicide. Plus, she and Fearne both suffer from insomnia, so share what works – and what really doesn't – for each of them. The Pussycat Dolls will be touring Europe in summer 2026.If you liked this episode of Happy Place, you might also like:Leigh-Anne PinnockLeAnne RimesPaloma Faith Hosted on Acast. It's 3 AM and your brain won't shut off. About 1 in 10 adults meets the clinical definition of chronic insomnia, and most never get treated. Instead, they scroll through an endless aisle of magnesium gummies, melatonin, and $300 trackers that don't address the real problem. We brought in a neurologist and a psychologist who never spoke to each other and landed on almost the exact same conclusions. In this episode, you'll learn: How the brain's glymphatic cleaning system works during sleep and why chronic insomnia is a brain health problem Why melatonin is a darkness signal, not a sleeping pill, and how nocturnal animals prove the point A sleep neurologist's honest 1-to-10 ratings of every sleep aid you've heard of: magnesium (2/10), CBT-I (10/10), alcohol (-10/10), and 12 more What orthosomnia is and why your sleep tracker might be making your insomnia worse Why perimenopause and menopause create what one expert calls "a perfect storm" for sleep disruption, and why doctors keep missing sleep apnea in women How CBT-I works: sleep restriction, stimulus control, and why your therapist will tell you to spend less time in bed, not more The data showing CBT-I may outperform hormone therapy for menopausal insomnia ACT therapy for insomnia: a different approach for people who get more anxious from CBT-I Blue light, naps, the 8-hour rule, catching up on weekends: what holds up and what doesn't Five steps to start tonight, and why you should pick just two Dr. Sujay Kansagra is a pediatric neurologist and sleep medicine specialist at Duke University, director of Duke's Pediatric Neurology Sleep Medicine Program, and author of "My Child Won't Sleep." Infused with the relaxing quality of nature and the sound-masking properties of white noise, listening to running water is an ideal way to turn off all the stressful things life brings, and to de-stress. Some of our most popular sounds include a river, flowing creek, babbling brook, gentle waves on a lake, and a bamboo fountain. Rain also creates a natural white noise. Infused with the relaxing quality of nature and the sound-masking properties of white noise, listening to rain is an ideal way to switch off all the stressful things life brings and to de-stress. Some of our most popular sounds are rain on an umbrella, hailstorms, hard rain, soft rain, gentle rain, wind and rain, rain on a car.White noise helps babies and children to get a better and deeper night's sleep. This is because external sounds are masked by the noise. With white noise in the background, your child will not hear annoying cars driving by or dogs barking in bed. This allows your little one to sleep better. And it also saves you as a parent a lot of hours!Pink noise is more common in nature than you might expect. It can be compared to continuous rainfall or wind. In addition to white noise, pink noise is also increasing in popularity, especially in business environments. Because it can increase productivity, concentration and creativity.Brown noise can be compared to waves of the sea, a river current, strong winds or the sound of thunder during a storm. Like pink noise, brown noise is very similar to white noise. However, the frequencies have been lowered even further and a lot more concentrated. This gives it a rougher/coarse tone than pink noise. It sounds a bit deeper and a bit bass-like. The benefits of brown noise are the same as the other types of noise. It provides relaxation, increased focus and improved deep sleep.DISCLAIMER: Be aware that loud noises can damage your hearing. If you can't carry on a conversation without raising your voice while playing one of our spheres, the sound may be too loud for your ears. Do not place the speakers directly next to a baby's ears. If you have trouble hearing or ringing in your ears, stop listening to the white noise immediately and see an audiologist or your doctor. The sounds provided by ASMR Sleep Recordings are for entertainment purposes only and are not a treatment for sleep disorders or tinnitus. Consult your doctor if you regularly have severe sleeping problems, experience fitful/restless sleep or feel tired during the day.ASMR Sleep Recordings is the white noise and nature sounds podcast to help you sleep, study or soothe a baby. In this Mentor Moment, Bobby Kerr - former Dragon and former CEO of Insomnia Coffee - shares the strategic lessons that helped scale Insomnia from a small coffee business into a recognised national brand. Bobby breaks down why underfunding was one of his biggest early mistakes, how letting go of ego helped him choose the right brand name and structure, and why partnerships with companies like Spar, Easons, Penneys, and Meadows & Byrne became key routes to growth. This is a practical lesson in playing the long game, building multiple revenue streams, and making the kind of strategic decisions that give a business more ways to survive and scale. In This Episode: Candles, Cork & Linen | The Insomnia ProjectAmanda and Marco are back with another slow, wandering conversation — the kind that asks nothing of you and gives your mind just enough to follow without holding on. The episode closes with candles, including Amanda's low-key satisfying project of melting down candle remnants to make something new.The kind of show that's made for winding down. Send us Fan MailS6 E132 - Can't Sleep? Try This Meditation for Insomnia & Racing ThoughtsCan't sleep? If you're lying awake at night with racing thoughts, sleep anxiety, frustration, or middle-of-the-night wake-ups, this guided meditation for insomnia is designed to help you stop fighting sleep and relate to wakefulness with more calm, mindfulness, and self-compassion.In this episode of Sleep Takeout, clinical psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn guides you through a gentle Leaves on a Stream meditation adapted specifically for insomnia, nighttime anxiety, and difficulty falling back asleep. Rather than trying to force sleep, empty your mind, or “make yourself relax,” this practice helps you notice sleep-related thoughts, feelings, and body sensations without judgment — and then gently return your attention to the image of leaves floating down a stream. This meditation may be especially helpful if you struggle with:Difficulty falling asleepWaking up in the middle of the nightEarly morning awakeningsRacing thoughts at bedtimeSleep anxietyFear of not sleepingFrustration about being awakeChecking the clockWorrying about tomorrowFeeling tense, restless, or alert in bedInsomnia-related body sensationsOverthinking at nightTrying too hard to sleepThis practice is rooted in mindfulness, self-compassion, anxiety treatment, and principles often used alongside Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, also known as CBT-I. The goal is not to force sleep to happen. The goal is to soften the struggle with wakefulness, notice thoughts and sensations more gently, and give your mind something steady and compassionate to return to. If you are awake at 2 AM, 3 AM, or 4 AM wondering, “Why can't I sleep?” or “How do I calm my racing thoughts at night?” this episode can help you practice a different response: noticing, allowing, and returning. Use this guided sleep meditation when you are lying in bed, during a nighttime awakening, before sleep, or anytime you want to practice letting go of anxious thoughts about sleep. In this episode, you'll practice:Mindfulness for insomniaA Leaves on a Stream meditationLetting go of racing thoughtsNoticing sleep anxiety without judgmentResponding kindly to nighttime wakefulnessBecoming aware of body sensations without fighting themReturning attention gently when the mind wandersReducing the struggle around being awakeThis episode is not about perfect sleep. Infused with the relaxing quality of nature and the sound-masking properties of white noise, listening to running water is an ideal way to turn off all the stressful things life brings, and to de-stress. In this episode of Insomnia Insight, Coach Daniel explores 7 common habits that can unintentionally keep insomnia going — and how changing these patterns can make sleep feel easier and more natural again. From constantly researching sleep problems to tracking sleep data obsessively, these habits often come from a genuine desire to feel safe, reassured, and in control. But paradoxically, they can increase pressure, anxiety, and self-monitoring around sleep. Coach Daniel walks through each habit compassionately, emphasizing that these patterns are not personal failures, but understandable responses from a mind trying to help. In this episode of Talking Sleep, host Dr. Seema Khosla welcomes Dr. Daniel Buysse and Dr. Todd Arnedt, both members of the AASM clinical practice guideline committee, to discuss the newly released guidelines on combination treatment for chronic insomnia disorder in adults. Unlike previous guidelines, this new guidance specifically addresses what happens in real-world clinical practice: patients often request both cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and pharmacotherapy, or arrive seeking medications while clinicians advocate for behavioral interventions. The guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for navigating these combination treatment scenarios, incorporating patient preferences in ways previous guidelines did not. The conversation explores the guideline development process, including how committee members were selected and how diverse professional backgrounds enriched the discussion. Dr. Buysse and Dr. Arnedt explain why patient preference wasn't adequately reflected in original practice guidelines and how this updated version addresses that gap. The first recommendation receives detailed examination: In adults with chronic insomnia, the AASM suggests combination treatment with CBT-I plus medication over medication alone (conditional recommendation, low certainty of evidence). The experts clarify which medications were examined, including whether dual orexin receptor antagonists (DORAs) were included, and explain why evidence certainty is low despite numerous studies. Pharmaceutical sponsorship creates methodological differences—PSG outcomes, fixed time in bed requirements—that complicate interpretation. The high placebo response in insomnia trials adds another layer of complexity. Critical implementation questions arise: What does "combination therapy" actually mean? Should both treatments start simultaneously, or should one precede the other? Can patients start medications while awaiting CBT-I appointments given typical access delays? The second recommendation appears paradoxical: The AASM suggests against combination treatment over CBT-I alone, yet recommends combination over medication alone. Dr. Buysse and Dr. Arnedt explain this nuanced position—CBT-I alone remains superior, but for patients who prioritize rapid total sleep time improvement over daytime symptom reduction, combination therapy may be reasonable. The conversation addresses whether treatment order matters and whether clinical (not just insurance-driven) logic suggests a medication hierarchy—zolpidem before eszopiclone, the role of trazodone, when to consider ramelteon. A crucial question emerges: What about patients who refuse or cannot access CBT-I? How do these guidelines apply when the preferred behavioral treatment is unavailable or unwanted? Throughout, the experts emphasize that guidelines inform but don't dictate clinical decisions. Patient preferences, values, and individual circumstances must shape treatment plans. The guidelines provide evidence-based frameworks while acknowledging the complexity of real-world insomnia management. Whether you're treating chronic insomnia, navigating patient requests for medications, addressing CBT-I access barriers, or seeking evidence-based approaches to combination therapy, this episode provides essential guidance. Join us for this important conversation about balancing behavioral and pharmacological approaches to chronic insomnia in clinical practice.
John Sarno made his mark in the mind-body world by challenging one powerful assumption: that chronic pain is caused by a broken body.Instead, he proposed that the brain could generate symptoms in response to a perceived threat. What if those exact same principles apply to insomnia?Well, I believe they do. In this episode, I break down how Sarno's work applies directly to sleep—and why insomnia may have far more in common with chronic pain than a sleep disorder. We'll look at three key mechanisms that keep insomnia going—and once you see them, it will completely change how you understand what's happening in your body. This episode is my small ode of gratitude to Dr. John Sarno. I hope you enjoy it!

Former U.S. Poet Laureate and musician Joy Harjo (Mvskoke) immerses listeners in a diverse array of jazz styles and deeply emotional poetry in her new album, “Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace”. Co-produced by Grammy-winning artist Esperanza Spalding, the album features originals and covers, including a re-interpretation of Charles Mingus’s “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”. Harjo also transforms her 2015 poem, “I Pray for My Enemies”, into a feverish, free-form composition, while “Rabbit Is Up to Tricks” draws on the power of traditional oral storytelling and “Stomp All Night” delivers a fun and funk-filled jam. Acclaimed jazz vocalist Julia Keefe (Nez Perce) and the 16-piece ensemble of talented Native musicians known as the Indigenous Big Band make their album debut with “Incarnadine”. The album honors Native jazz pioneers like Mildred Bailey (Coeur d’Alene) and Jim Pepper (Kaw/Muscogee), as well as featuring innovative originals like “Wawasint8Da” and “Ddat Suite, MVT. 3 Iron Horse Gallup”. The ensemble continues to earn critical praise especially for their live performances, highlighted by their 2024 spring residency at the Kennedy Center. We’ll speak with both Joy Harjo and Julia Keefe about their new albums in this episode of Native Playlist, our regular feature on Indigenous music.

If your mind won't stop running tonight, we've got just the thing. In this episode of The Insomnia Project, Marco is joined by returning guest Nidhi Kanna for the kind of warm, wandering conversation that's perfect for insomnia, racing thoughts, or anyone who just needs something gentle to drift off to. No stress, no stakes — just the good stuff. They start where all great conversations start: staring at a wall. Specifically, painting one. Nidhi and Marco get wonderfully sidetracked on the surprisingly fraught world of colours that are easy to commit to and hard to undo — the kind of paint decisions that haunt you in the best possible way. From there, the conversation meanders the way only a sleepcast can — from wall colours to Nidhi's recent trip to Mexico City, taking in the food, the texture of the place, and the very particular pleasure of being somewhere new. And then, naturally, they find their way to the finer things: Nidhi's bougie delights, Marco's bougie delights, and what it really means to treat yourself well. It's the perfect listen for a slow Sunday morning, a Monday morning at work when you want to focus but need a friend nearby, or a Tuesday night that won't wind down, or anyone who loves a good chat about nothing and everything all at once.

Windows changed architecture long before they became something your neighbor peers through while pretending to check the weather. This episode looks at how civilizations figured out light, airflow, glassmaking, and the surprisingly complicated problem of keeping rain outside while still seeing what is happening in the street. You'll hear about early window openings in ancient homes, the rise of stained glass in medieval cathedrals, the invention of affordable glass panes, and why old castles sometimes had tiny windows that made everyone miserable but technically harder to invade. Along the way, there's also the slow evolution toward modern suburban windows that somehow cost more every year while still refusing to open correctly. It's a calm walk through architecture, engineering, and the everyday object most people only notice when it leaks. It's steady and consistent, with no whispering and no sudden changes, just enough to give your mind something to follow as you wind down.
