What would you do if you were stuck at the bottom of a crevasse somewhere high up a mountain, completely alone?Fernanda Maciel is the type of person to not panic – she knows exactly what to do. As an endurance athlete who specialises in running up and down high mountains, she spends a lot of time with herself. Fernanda has to know how to deal with this, and how to juggle the physical endurance that's needed from her body to complete even her most daring runs. Meditation not only saved her life while she was stuck inside the crevasse, but is also the outlet through which she controls this mental and physical stress.Even if you're not planning on competing in ultra-endurance events anytime soon, meditation should play a fixed role in your daily routine. This does not have to last hours – it can be as short as only a few minutes – but the skills you learn from this will leave you wondering how you ever lived without it.Talk to us at podcast@redbull.com! In 2014, while teaching a physical education class in Germany, a baseball hit Jill in the side of her head, leaving her with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that took 70% of her vision and nearly her life. Before the accident, she was an athlete, teacher and coach who ran on trails, cycled and competed in duathlons. “After 26 months in hospitals, I felt lost,” “I emerged from the hospital a completely different person from how I arrived. I lost my eyesight, autonomy, car, apartment, work and residency permit. But one aspect of my life that remained the same was my passion and desire to be outside with Mother Nature.” During her recovery in Denver, she could glimpse Colorado's mountains from her hospital room, and knew she wanted to be able to escape into them. This injury left the fiercely independent and athletic Jill, forced to relearn many of life's tasks on her own, with impaired vision. Jill's long road to recovery and adventure spirit has miraculously brought her to peaks like K2 and she is the only Canadian female to summit 6 mountains above 8,000 meters. She aims to break down the stigma associated with traumatic brain injury, vision loss, and eating disorders. We continue to witness Jill's embracing the Human Will, the Passion that drives us, and the ability to live the life you want, even with excruciating obstacles. Sara and Jill talk about Jill's journey and her incredible courage. They talk about the Adventurous Spirit and the power of Mother Nature. You will hear about lessons learned and that Grief and Gratitude can walk hand in hand. Episode 29 of the pod and boy, oh boy was this just wisdom bomb after wisdom bomb! So many nuggets of wisdom from the man himself Jason Hardrath. A bit of housekeeping, I did have some audio issues within and after this episode so please bare with me as the audio may be a little bit off. Jason is a serial adventure, endurance athlete and teacher. In 2015 Jason was ejected from his car and suffered 9 broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a shattered shoulder and contusions throughout his internal organs and his right knee was damaged. The crash tore the anterior cruciate ligament, known as the ACL, which keeps the knee from sliding forward and back, and the lateral collateral ligament, known as the LCL, which keeps the knee from sliding inward. This would have ended anyone's sporting career but not Jason's. Throughout our conversation, you will hear him talk the talk but also walk the walk. From completing 119 FKT's, a number of endurance runs and climbing up Washington's highest peaks in 50days he paves the way for what is truly possible after such a traumatic event. I learnt a lot from this man and a lot of what he said landed true and close to my heart. My guest today has not only climbed Mount Everest but has also climbed the highest peaks on all seven continents.  Vivian James Rigney is an executive coach at Inside Us and the author of the upcoming book, "Naked at the Knife-Edge: What Everest Taught Me About Leadership and the Power of Vulnerability". A compelling and often harrowing true account of Rigney's experience conquering Everest—the seventh and final peak of the Seven Summits he'd faced—Naked at the Knife-Edge offers a unique window into lessons on leadership and what it takes to succeed in any circumstance.  After enduring avalanches, sub-zero temperatures, and tragedy unfolding around him and his team, the roller coaster of pain, self-reflection, questioning, and above all, loneliness, left Rigney with an ego in tatters. It was then that he discovered an awakening of what real purpose and legacy actually is.    Time Stamps:   (0:10) My Guest Today (3:00) Vivian's Motivation for Climbing the Highest Peaks (24:40) Starting the Self Awareness Journey (30:56) What is Intuition? In this riveting interview, Louis Carstens, high altitude mountaineer, shares the highs and lows of summiting the seven highest peaks in the world… where there's the very real possibility of not coming home. When he summited Mount Everest he became only the 293rd climber in the world ever to complete the Seven Summits. Having spent his childhood in mining towns in South Africa, the mine dumps were a stark contrast to the monstrous peaks he now finds freedom in climbing. Louis's fearlessness, optimism for life, adaptability and never give up attitude was honed through his failures. One of his toughest challenges was turning back just 450 meters from his first attempt to summit Mount Everest. He gives us a taste of the moments after summiting Mount Everest one year later…12 years of hard work and dedication were realised in those few majestic moments on top of the world. Louis has learnt to overcome mental & physical barriers of the highest order. Apart from peaking mountains, he has five degrees to his name (3 cum laude) and constantly pushes himself to his edge yet he'll tell you he's the average Joe next door which makes him even more exceptional. He's proven what's possible when you decide that failure will not get the better of you…Louis's success on mountains started with failure on mountains. A captivating discussion filled with insightful lessons on how to peak in any area of life. Episode Themes The meaning of freedom Importance of knowing our limits or weaknesses Turning back 450 meters from summiting Everest Seeing the world from the top of the world Success leaves an imprint Can we become fearless without climbing mountains? This sweeping new history recognizes that the Civil War was not just a military conflict but also a moment of profound transformation in Americans' relationship to the natural world. To be sure, environmental factors such as topography and weather powerfully shaped the outcomes of battles and campaigns, and the war could not have been fought without the horses, cattle, and other animals that were essential to both armies. But in An Environmental History of the Civil War (University of North Carolina Press, 2020), Judkin Browning and Timothy Silver weave a far richer story, combining military and environmental history to forge a comprehensive new narrative of the war's significance and impact. As they reveal, the conflict created a new disease environment by fostering the spread of microbes among vulnerable soldiers, civilians, and animals; led to large-scale modifications of the landscape across several states; sparked new thinking about the human relationship to the natural world; and demanded a reckoning with disability and death on an ecological scale. And as the guns fell silent, the change continued; Browning and Silver show how the war influenced the future of weather forecasting, veterinary medicine, the birth of the conservation movement, and the establishment of the first national parks. In considering human efforts to find military and political advantage by reshaping the natural world, Browning and Silver show not only that the environment influenced the Civil War's outcome but also that the war was a watershed event in the history of the environment itself. Judkin Browning is Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of History at Appalachian State University and has written two military histories of the Civil War: Shifting Loyalties: The Union Occupation of Eastern North Carolina (2011) and The Seven Days' Battle: The War Begins Anew (2012). Timothy Silver is Professor of History at Appalachian State University and the author of Mount Mitchell and the Black Mountains: An Environmental History of the Highest Peaks in Eastern America and A New Face on the Countryside: Indians, Colonists, and Slaves in South Atlantic Forests, 1500-1800, a foundational work in the field of environmental history. Judkin Browning is Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of History at Appalachian State University and has written two military histories of the Civil War: Shifting Loyalties: The Union Occupation of Eastern North Carolina (2011) and The Seven Days’ Battle: The War Begins Anew (2012). " Suddenly I heard those two dreaded words...... MAN DOWN, MAN DOWN. After wiping the dust from my eyes and mouth, I looked around to see who it was, then suddenly realised...... IT WAS ME! " It was December 2011 and Justin was serving in Afghanistan on Op Herrick 15 with his unit 2nd Battalion The Rifles. His team was crashed out to help evacuate another platoon who had a casualty and needed extracting. Justin was one of the teams search operatives where he would often search areas that the Taliban would likely plant roadside bombs or improvised explosive devices (IED's). During the extraction Justin broke into a tree line to clear a route for his team to follow. His next step would change his life forever........... BANG! Justin, laid on his back, came to his senses after the blast and suddenly realised he had lost both legs, and the ends of two fingers on his right hand. His team administered first aid extremely quickly and the next thing he remembers was waking up in the QE hospital in Birmingham, UK. This was the beginning of a long journey ahead in recovery. Today on the Best Version Of You, Justin shares with us how he has forged a robust and resilient mindset since day one of waking up in hospital. Something that has helped him achieve many things he previously thought he couldn't. He has gone on to test his body and mind to it's limits by setting goals and achieving them. Since his recovery he has climbed Mont Blanc, the highest point in Europe, and more recently scaled Mount Kilimanjaro....... with no legs! Justin is now starting to share his story through public speaking. Something I have no doubt he'll succeed in. His story of sheer determination and discipline to become the best version of himself, despite his injuries is phenomenal, and one so many of us can learn from. This is one episode you truly don't want to miss! To contact Justin, you can reach him on Facebook and Instagram @justin_oliver_davis.

Welcome to Episode 10 of the Condor Climbing Cast! In this episode, I chat with Timothy Place. Tim has a wide range of skills that include a Master's Degree in music composition; accomplished ice climber, mountaineer, rock climber, web developer and happy father of two! I know right... he's pretty neat. I was filled with wonderment while chatting with Tim. It was total story-time with your cool uncle kind of situation. After this conversation, he took me on my first alpine climb "Petite Grepon, South Face", in Estes Park, Colorado. There were a few audio issues throughout the first part of the conversation, but it clears up near the middle. I hope you enjoy! What makes sport compelling to watch? What drives us to compete against each other? I would argue that we come back to watch the same sports over and over again because of the thrill of the unknown. Until the moment the runners cross the finish line or the clock runs out, anything can happen, and often does. The critical element that preserves this tension is the presumption of fairness. We want a fair fight, where all competitors have a legitimate shot to prove themselves worthy of the victor’s trophy. This is the fundamental purpose of governing bodies in sport. Their charge is to create a system of rules that guarantee, to the greatest possible extent, a level playing field for all participants. But as we’ve seen time and time again, the corrupting influences of money, power, and international politics cause many sporting organizations to forget their duty to the athletes and fans. Instead, they use their positions to enrich themselves and advance their agendas. This seems to be the case with the latest controversy surrounding track and field. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) seems powerless or uninterested in curbing the rampant use of performance enhancing drugs, but intensely interested in enforcing their conception of the feminine ideal. Most recently, they crafted a set of rules that appear to be directly targeted at South African middle-distance champion Caster Semenya. Returning to the show this week to weigh in on the situation is Nick Symmonds, 2-time Olympian, entrepreneur, and outspoken advocate for the rights of athletes. He and I dive into the principles behind the IAAF controversy, including what a level playing field should look like. We also discuss his recent retirement from professional running, and how his next adventures will take him to the top of the world seven times over.

Takeaways People are Creatures of Habit: Quit spending your mental energy trying to figure out when your prospects are more apt to respond or engage with you. Just like you have a routine, so do they. They likely get out of bed around the same time, commute into the office at the same time, and guess what — respond to emails and phone calls at the same time of day. Look for those patterns and learn to strike while the iron is hot. Practice Genuine Empathy: A lot of people talk about empathy, but most don’t practice it. What does it mean to truly understand a prospect's challenges? Without trying to sell anything, sit down with a few of your ideal prospects and let them teach you. Ask them what industry struggles they’re having right now? Ask them how they are personally measured on initiatives. Ask them how they are compensated for success. These small nuggets can turn into a pile of gold. Be Willing to Walk Away: As excited as you are about what you sell, it’s not for everyone — at least not right away. Give your prospect the space to say “no,” but make sure you get permission to say “no” yourself if it’s the right thing to do. “No” doesn’t mean never and by leaning into that notion, you’ll create a level of trust most reps never get.
