In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, I interview Ross Cooper and Erin Murphy about their brand new book titled Project Based Learning: Real Questions. Real Answers. How to Unpack PBL an Inquiry. If there's one thing that teaching during a pandemic has emphasized it's the need for inquiry and better student involvement. So many teachers have reported lack of engagement in remote learning. I think project-based learning is the future of school and a method of instruction that every educator should explore and apply. No matter where you are on the spectrum with project-based learning, you will appreciate and benefit from hearing from Ross and Erin. Ross Cooper is currently an administrator in the Chappaqua Central School District. Previously, he was an Elementary School Principal, K-12 curriculum supervisor, Elementary Assistant Principal, and fourth grade teacher. As a nationally recognized leader in project based learning, he has worked with thousands of educators across the country to implement PBL, and in 2016 he coauthored Hacking Project Based Learning: 10 Easy Steps to PBL and Inquiry in the Classroom. While his day job is his first professional priority, he finds time to conduct workshops and speak on project based learning, inquiry-based learning, student-centered learning, instructional leadership, his professional experiences, and more. When he is not working, he enjoys eating steak and pizza and provoking his four beautiful nephews and niece. He blogs at rosscoop31.com, and you can connect with him via email, RossCoops31@gmail.com, and on Twitter @RossCoops31. Erin Murphy currently has the pleasure of serving as the Supervisor of Teaching & Learning for the Humanities subjects in the East Penn School District. In this episode, I interview Jennifer Gonzalez, the Editor in Chief, Founder, and Host of Cult of Pedagogy. Cult of Pedagogy is one of the most respected and followed educational resources for teachers available. Cult of Pedagogy is more than just the amazingly well written and applicable posts on her blog, it's more than her incredible podcast; Cult of pedagogy provides books, videos and other amazing resources to help teachers around the globe, but most importantly it is a community for teachers who love teaching and want to become their best. Jennifer and I have an amazing conversation about how Cult of Pedagogy came to be, how it has been helping teachers during this pandemic, and we look ahead at the future of education. Jennifer is absolutely brilliant, and we have a lot of fun. Buckle-up. Jennifer Gonzalez taught middle school language arts for seven years. Half that time was spent in the greater D.C. area, the other half in southcentral Kentucky. She earned National Board Certification in 2004. Then, after having her first child, sheleft teaching to be a stay-at-home mom. In 2008, She was hired by a local university to teach pre-service teachers. This work gave her new passion for preparing and supporting educators. When Jennifer was in the classroom, shefelt alone in her nerdiness. The teachers' lounge was never a safe place for her emotionally or intellectually, and finding others to share her real thoughts and feelings with took a lot of work. She learned to stifle the urge to gush about some new strategy She was planning to try or to open up about a struggle She was having with her students. She came to expect that her genuine questions would be met with sarcasm. With the creation of her site Cult of pedagogy, She hopes to create what shedid not have herself: a vibrant, encouraging, stimulating community of teachers, supporting each other toward excellence. She believes if we can reach across the limits of geography and find each other, there's no limit to the amazing things we can accomplish. Here's Stephan Cox Professional Summary: Fresh out of a PGCE in Secondary education from the University of Warwick, Stephen taught economics for ten years in the UK and at the British International School, Cairo (BISC). Dissatisfied with the quality of teacher training that he was receiving, Stephen moved back to the UK in 1997 and founded Osiris Educational with the 30-year vision of improving the life chances of children across the world. Osiris had humble beginnings, with Stephen and his partner Brenda developing and delivering their own training, based off their own expertise at quality provision. Over the years, Osiris quickly grew to become the nation's leading independent provider of teacher training, with the world's greatest educationalists in collaboration. During this time, Stephen worked closely with such world-renowned educationalists as Professor John Hattie, Professor Guy Claxton, Professor Carol Dweck and many others on developing and releasing now world-famous programmes for teachers in the UK, including Visible LearningPlus, the Osiris Mindsets Programme, and the Osiris Teaching Intervention. In response to the disruption caused to worldwide education by COVID-19, Stephen has re-focused on creating sustainable, online, interactive networks and programmes for teacher and leader development. He is continually driven by his belief that all learners deserve a great start in life, and this is achieved through an unrelenting focus on the quality and impact of teaching and learning. In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast I Interview Samantha Wheeler. A typical Wired Educator Podcast guest is someone who's written books, speaks from the stage, or earned multiple recognitions and awards for education, my guest today is wonderful and awesome, but for none of those reasons; Samantha is a senior in college rocking it as a student-teacher in one of the most challenging times in education. I wanted a fresh perspective on teaching and learning and Sami delivered. She is brilliant. I learned so much from this interview and you will too. Samantha Wheeler, or Sami as she goes by, is a current senior in college at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ. She is pursuing a dual degree in secondary education and mathematics. So far, she has completed an educational technology certification as well as a Google Level 1 Educator certification. She is also a part of the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program which seeks to place teachers with strong STEM content knowledge into high-need school districts upon graduation. At Rider, Sami is extremely involved on campus and is a part of many different organizations such as the Student Education Association, Math Club and four different national honors societies! She has made herself known on campus through multiple leadership and mentoring roles such as working as an orientation leader, peer coaching new students, and leading seminars for first year education majors. Sami has just started her last semester of college and is currently student teaching in a local middle school in a 7th grade math class. Once she graduates, Sami plans to teach math at the secondary level where she can't wait to share her love of STEM with others! She hopes to someday earn her masters and even possibly her PhD in hopes to teach upper level mathematics at the collegiate level. It is awesome. Tim is an educator and educational leader from Vancouver Canada. The two of us have an amazing conversation about content creation, podcasting, the future of education, leadership, and instruction during this pandemic. This episode is so much fun and has so many takeaways, you're going to need an extra suitcase. Click here to listen to this episode. Tim Cavey is a husband, stepfather of two, 8th grade teacher, and assistant principal in Vancouver, Canada. In this 38th episode of The Future Focused Podcast, I discuss the importance of inaction, stillness, and mindfulness in relation to leadership and living a dynamic life. We live in a fast-paced culture where multitasking, overwhelm and frustration are not only the norm but are often spoken of as virtues and badges of honor. I challenge this notion in this episode and remind listeners that like muscles, our brains need rest, and like devices, we often need a reset. Knowing about the importance of stillness and mindfulness is not enough; it must be scheduled and practiced. Too many people don't start because they feel they must study it and learn more. Nonsense! I'll share everything you need to know to get started NOW and share a couple of helpful resources too. This episode is an important episode that I hope you will really put into action. If you want great ideas, and the end to anxiety, then this is the episode for you. Unthink Before Bed is my newest book and it has made a tremendous debut across the globe by helping families teach their children (and themself while they’re at it) to learn the art of mindfulness. How do you expect children to become mindful, reduce worry, anxiety, and stress if you don’t teach it or provide the tools? Well, that is what my book does in a really fun way! Unthink Before Bed is the perfect bedtime book with over forty, beautifully colored illustrations and a whimsical rhyme reminiscent of Dr. Seuss. Follow the bedtime adventure of a young boy and his dog as they learn how to prepare their mind for bedtime. Written and illustrated by a veteran educator of thirty years and a father of four. This is Kelly Croy’s second book. Unthink Before Bed teaches children (and adults) how to slow down, build a routine, get to bed, and fall asleep. Woven into every stanza and illustration are the ten, secret lessons of mindfulness. Reduce anxiety, worry, and stress. Fall asleep happily. Get a peaceful night’s rest. It’s also two books in one…. There’s a QR code in the back which takes you to the audiobook of me reading it. Order your copy on Amazon today. Please let me know your thoughts. Have a great week. "Adversity does not build character, it reveals it." Wise words by American novelist, James Lane Allen, and words each of us should reflect on deeply during this COVID-19 pandemic. Now, more than any other time in our lifetime, we need leadership. We not only need leadership; we need more leaders. We need more people to stand up, speak up, and take action. This episode of The Future Focused Podcast is a live recording of a Facebook Live presentation I did earlier in the week. I focus on how to lead in a time of crisis. I review the six core elements of leadership as they apply to a crisis. I reflect on the importance of both our circle of focus and mindfulness. I offer my advice on how to lead yourself, your home, your business, and your community. This recording has already made an impact when it went live. The comments I received immediately told me I needed to share it out in podcast form, so people could listen while they drive, do chores, and workout. Thank you for taking the time to listen. Thank you for being a leader. I hope you will share this out and reach out to me. Stay safe and healthy friends. You are a leader. This is our time. Our best days are ahead of us, not behind us. This episode of The Future Focused Podcast was recorded before most COVID-19 restrictions. I have been unable to post it due to work and family obligations from the COVID-19 pandemic. I am excited to share it with you now. I believe it is timely, but the intro oddly does not reference the current state of our global situation well. This episode of The Future Focused Podcast is all about innovation. Innovation is a buzz word that quite often gets misused or tossed around without people fully understanding it. The purpose of this episode is to define what innovation really is, how it plays an important role in leadership, and I'll identify innovation's greatest challenge. By the end of the episode, you will fully understand what innovation is and will be excited to make it a part of your leadership style. People admire innovators. People want to hire innovators. People want to become innovators. Listen to this episode and learn what true innovation is, why it escapes so many, and what a leader can do to make innovation part of their organization's culture. In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, I had the pleasure and honor to interview Dr. Louisa Moats. She pioneered the science of reading and is the leading authority on the planet on how to teach students to read. It was not only my honor and pleasure to interview her, I was able to connect Louisa with three of our educators, Stephanie Kieffer, Amy Quillen, Morgan Siefke, and our primary principal, Kendra VanDoren, to learn about Louisa's work and how we can improve literacy at our district. Our teachers got to ask Louisa questions! Our teachers and principal are part of the interview. Amazing. Dr. Moats has been a teacher, psychologist, researcher, graduate school faculty member, and author of many influential scientific journal articles, books, and policy papers on the topics of reading, spelling, language, and teacher preparation. After a first job as a neuropsychology technician, she became a teacher of students with learning and reading difficulties, earning her Master's degree at Peabody College of Vanderbilt. Later, after realizing how little she understood about teaching reading, she earned a doctorate in Reading and Human Development from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Dr. Moats spent the next fifteen years in private practice as a licensed psychologist in Vermont, specializing in evaluation and consultation with individuals of all ages and walks of life who experienced reading, writing, and language difficulties. At that time, she trained psychology interns in the Dartmouth Medical School Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Moats spent one year as resident expert for the California Reading Initiative; four years as site director of the NICHD Early Interventions Project in Washington, DC; and ten years as research advisor and consultant with Sopris Learning, obtaining two Small Business Innovation Research grants from the NICHD. Dr. Moats is most well known for her research and writing about the need for improvements in teacher education. Her more recent publications have focused on helping teachers understand the language basis for reading and writing. They include LETRS Professional Development (Voyager Sopris), LANGUAGE! Live blended literacy intervention (Voyager Sopris), and Speech to Print: Language Essentials for Teachers (Brookes Publishing), as well as a series of articles and books for the International Dyslexia Association. Mentioned in the end roll: LaVonna Roth from episode 149, Ignite Your Shine, would like to invite you to join her on a webinar where she will be sharing the Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid as a New Consultant! Two are scheduled for this Wednesday, noon and 8 PM Eastern. If you cannot attend Live, register here and a replay will be sent your way. Of course, Live is WAY more fun for all involved! In this episode of The Future Focused Podcast, I share seven tools for the leader's mind. We have tools all over our house. We have tools to cook, tools to make repairs, tools for our electronics, and we even have tools to work on our bodies. All of these tools help us to do things better. We have tools to help us in every place in our lives, but one area that most feel they lack tools is our minds. We need tools to help us think better. Today you’re going to be given seven awesome tools that the legends of leadership utilize to level-up and make a difference. Our minds are powerful tools when we know how to put them to use. They can solve any problem and help us achieve any goal when we utilize these tools. Without the proper, mental leadership tools our minds can work against us and make us its prisoner. If you are seeing success as a leader you are most likely already applying some of these tools. I also hope you will sign-up for my newsletter. I am giving away a free tool called The Leadership Matrix. It will allow you to identify where you are strong in leadership, and where you need to improve. In this episode of the Future Focused Podcast, I explain why authenticity is essential to leadership and how we can build and keep our authenticity. When asked what is the most important action a person can take to improve as a leader, I always answer with build trust. The best way to build sustainable trust is through authenticity, and the fastest way to destroy trust is to demonstrate a lack of authenticity. One of the most important ways we can build trust is by living in authentic life. Authenticity is the glue that holds leadership together without it a leader falls apart. Show me someone who has failed as a leader at an epic level whether on television, in the newspaper, in politics, or anywhere, and I’ll tell you someone who has a problem with authenticity. They simply lived one way but let others believe they were living another. Once people recognize you are not who you say you are, they will no longer follow allow themselves to be influenced by you. I’ve written about the six core elements of leadership and authenticity is the sixth. You could be super strong and all the other five but be weak and authenticity and the rest will crumble. You need to know your values. You need to proclaim your values. And most importantly you need to live your values. I find so many people who want to be great leaders and yet they do not do any of these three. They don’t truly know what they value. They don’t let people know what they value. And therefore they can’t what they value. They are all over the place. Living our values is what other people see and that is how we build trust with them. This episode will help you become a better leader. Thank you for taking time out of your busy week to level-up and get better. Kelly Croy is an author, speaker, and educator. Want to learn more? In this episode of The Future Focused Podcast, I focus on the importance of Emotional Intelligence. What is it? Why do we need it? How do we build it? If you really want to become an exceptional leader… If you really want to live an incredible life… you need to build your emotional intelligence. If you’re struggling in leadership or struggling in life your lack of emotional intelligence may very well be the obstacle that’s holding you back. Emotional intelligence is something that is growing in importance in both the workplace and home. It is something I believe it extremely important to individuals, teams, and leaders… no matter where you lead… in the home, at work, a sports team… a battlefield, online, offline, everywhere. Most people don't know what it is nor why they need it. Well, that is changing, and it's changing at a rapid pace. Self-care, wellness, and emotional intelligence are fortunately becoming common practice in the workplace and home. Find out what it is, why it’s important and how you can increase your Emotional Intelligence to bring peace and prosperity, health and happiness, to your life. It’s time to level-up your leadership and design a more dynamic life. It’s time to get future-focused. Mentioned in this episode: The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday: This is the book that I read a section of every day and have been for years. This is one of the ways I build my emotional intelligence. In this episode of The Future Focused Podcast, I delve deep into the possibilities of coaching. Too many people have a previously conceived negative mindset about coaching, or if interested have ruled out any possibility that coaching would be possible for their goal or their budget. I not only believe that everyone can benefit from coaching, I truly believe everyone should and can have a coach! I believe that most people never reach their maximum potential unless they are coached. On recent episodes of the Future Focused Podcast, I have talked about the 5 types of people everyone needs in their life. I shared that having these 5 people reduces stress, frustration and overwhelm, and leads to faster and greater success than imagined. One of those five people needed is a coach. This episode not only highlights the importance of a coach in your life but also illustrates how anyone, and I mean anyone, can get one, and why everyone should. Someone reading this right now saying… I don’t need one. That person’s success will be stunted and limited. They’ll never reach their optimum potential. In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, I interview LaVonna Roth. We talk about the neuroscience connected with teaching and learning. LaVonna shares her message of Ignite Your S.H.I.N.E. and it will seriously make a difference in how you teach and how your students learn. She breaks down the Acronym of SHINE for us and so much more. This is a great interview. LaVonna Roth is the lead illuminator, creator and founder of Ignite Your S.H.I.N.E.® Self. Heart. Inspire. Navigate. Exceptional. These words capture the path that LaVonna Roth uses to challenge others in discovering how to ignite the S.H.I.N.E. in their students, others and self. LaVonna will push your thinking and personal reflection to challenge you to grow personally and professionally. Her mission is to help individuals discover who they are, what they can become, and to build self-motivation to see how far they can go. She will passionately stretch the status quo in education and invite you to join her so “shifts happen”. One way to be involved is through social media, using #igniteyourSHINE. LaVonna has a deep passion in using brain research as a fundamental foundation to help students, educators, parents, and the community to honor and value each other so we unite and become unstoppable in what can be achieved. By using these fundamentals, she identifies how to reframe adversities and use those moments to become the exceptional person you really are. This enlightenment will occur throughout but be brought to light as she shares parts of her own personal story. As a highly energetic, dynamic and engaging FUNnote (keynote) speaker, learning specialist, author and consultant, LaVonna has a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, a Master's in the Art of Teaching and a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership. She taught at the elementary and secondary levels and is the author of 8 books. She has presented in the U.S., Canada, Europe, South America and the Middle East on increasing engagement and the fun factor in learning. She is the creator and founder of the Ignite Your S.H.I.N.E.® movement and framework, where every person is encouraged to use his or her skills, talents and gifts… to illuminate the world. Together, we got this! Mentioned in this episode: LaVonna's Books: She is the author of 8 book: Brain Powered Strategies for All Learners. In this episode of The Future Focused Podcast, you will learn how to answer the six demands of self-care to become a better leader and live a better life. As Katie Reed, a very wise individual, once said, “Self care is giving the world the best of you, not what is left of you.” In my last episode of focused on frustration and overwhelm and I discussed the five people you need in your life to combat it. In this episode I want to focus on what YOU can do. Self care is a real thing, just as Katie’s wise words remind us, for if we do not take very good care of ourselves, our beaten, worn, exhausted, anxious, self will be unable and unfit to take care of all those we love, serve, and lead. Self care demands knowledge of the self. We cannot take care of what we do not know nor understand. This twenty-third episode of The Future Focused Podcast is the start of our second season. This episode focuses on The Four Essential Actions of Leadership. Eleven minutes and forty seconds of pure "let’s level-up our leadership and design a dynamic lifestyle." Buckle-up as I share the absolute transformational power of The Four Essential Actions of Leadership. They'll take you to the next level, but be cautioned: these actions take practice, courage, and skill, and our best developed over time with reflection . The first action is so easy, but the other three are tough, and the fourth separates leaders from everyone else. You are going to love this episode. It's note-taking worthy. In this episode of the Future Focused Podcast I caution you to be careful what you label a weakness. Labels don't help us and most of them are wrong. Labels often program us with incorrect, limiting mindsets. When I was young my teacher's feedback on my work in school focused on two areas that were presented as weaknesses. They would report: "Kelly talks too much. Kelly draws pictures on his paper and during class." What was once a negative is now my livelihood; I am hired by organizations around the world as a speaker and artist. We need to be careful of what we allow others to label as a weakness and what we label for ourselves. I often hear people say they have anxiety or attention issues like ADD. I have these, but rather than view them as negatives, I see them as super powers. My anxiety helps me to prepare for possible problems in presentations and consulting work. It allows me to analyze scenarios and issues others cannot even conceive. If you can't identify potential problems, how can you prepare to stop them before they happen? My anxiety, when managed is a super power. My perceived weakness with attention disorder is also a super power. I come up with the most creative ideas and solutions. Without a busy mind bouncy around thinking of a hundred possibilities my creativity would be severely limited. Yes, my attention issues are a super power. Listen to this podcast. This episode will help you brainstorm the plan for your year and help you figure out what is next. This episode will kickstart a what if brainstorming session for you.
