#132 | The Man of God: Responsible

Kavod Family Podcast

In this episode of the Kavod Family Podcast, the team continues the “Man of God and His Household” series by tackling a foundational call for every man: responsibility. Drawing from Psalm 127, they contrast two kinds of homes—the house of vanity and the house built by the Lord—and examine what it truly means for a man to manage his household with purpose and conviction. The home is not just where we rest—it's where we build. It's the first church, the first schoolhouse, and the first business. It's where faith, character, and legacy are formed. This conversation dives into four key areas: Time, Talent, Testimony, and Treasure, showing how each is a reflection of who you worship and how you lead.We talk about:Why responsibility starts with the manThe household as a reflection of worshipHow to evaluate your time, talents, and testimonyTeaching your children to love the standard, not just conform to itWhy your work and possessions must serve your family, not the other way aroundWhat it looks like to lead your wife with intentional time and attentionHow to train up children for kingdom fruit, not vanityYour wife, your children, your home—they are entrusted to your care. You are the only man called to lead your household. Don't leave the chair empty.

Malachi 4 & Matthew 9March 23rd, 2025Christus Victor. “An element of the atoning work of Christ that emphasizes the triumph of Christ over the evil powers of the world, through which he rescues his people and establishes a new relationship between God and the world. The evil powers of this world are real and active but not victorious. We were once slaves to sin but now we are free from sin.Sin once separated us from God but the victorious Christ has satisfied our sin and restored our relationship with our Father. A.W. Tozer “What you believe about God is the most important thing about you.” “What God did, God still does.” Malachi 4:1-6 (AMP) “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace, and all the arrogant (proud, self-righteous, haughty), and every evildoer shall be stubble; and the day that is coming shall set them on fire,” says the Lord of hosts, “so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But for you who fear My name [with awe-filled reverence] the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go forward and leap [joyfully] like calves [released] from the stall. 3 You will trample the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I do this,” says the Lord of hosts. 4 “Remember [with thoughtful concern] the Law of Moses My servant, the statutes and the ordinances which I commanded him on [Mount] Horeb [to give] to all Israel. 5 “Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. 6 He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers [a reconciliation produced by repentance], so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse [of complete destruction].”Matthew 9:18-21 (AMP) 18 While He was saying these things to them, a ruler (synagogue official) entered [the house] and kneeled down and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just now died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 Jesus got up and began to accompany the ruler, with His disciples. 20 Then a woman who had suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind Him and touched the [tassel] fringe of His outer robe; 21 for she had been saying to herself, “If I only touch His outer robe, I will be healed.” Matthew 8 & 9 records… The healing of a Roman soldier's servant, highlighting the faith of the soldierThe healing of Peter's mother in lawThe healing of a lame manThe resurrection of a Jewish ruler's daughterThe healing of a woman who was bold enough to push through a crowd to get to Jesus. The healing of two blind men:In the broadest of brush strokes, Jesus paints a few pictures in these 2 chapters: Access to Jesus has nothing to do with pedigree or prior Jesus knowledge or experience. Wherever Jesus is, His healing power is. Our faith gets us to Jesus but He is the healer.Tallit - Jewish Prayer ShawlTzitzits - Tassels woven into each corner of the TallitKanafayim – The 4 corners of the Tallit are called “wings.” The woman knew who she is reaching to and what she was reaching for “the sun of righteousness who will rise with healing in His wings.” Mark 5:29-34 (NIV)…29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. 30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?' ”32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” Jesus' brief address added more healing. “Daughter” – Relationship Affirmed. “Your faith has healed you.” The amplified reads [your trust and confidence in My power and My ability to heal]. Our faith moves us. Jesus heals us. “Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” Go forward free! Isaiah 53:4-5 (NIV). Surely, he (Jesus) took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. Why is it so hard for people today to believe that Jesus still divinely, miraculously heals people? Here are a few reasons…We are stuck in Saturday living with Sunday power available. Because not all healing prayers are met with divine healing but all are met with God's compassion. A Healing Prayer:God, I believe you can. I trust you if you don't. Here I come. 2 Corinthians 12:8-10 (AMP) 8 Concerning this I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might leave me; 9 but He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you [My lovingkindness and My mercy are more than enough—always available—regardless of the situation]; for [My] power is being perfected [and is completed and shows itself most effectively] in [your] weakness.” Therefore, I will all the more gladly boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ [may completely enfold me and] may dwell in me. 10 So I am well pleased with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, and with difficulties, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak [in human strength], then I am strong [truly able, truly powerful, truly drawing from God's strength].Psalm 57:1 (NIV) Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.Psalm 61:1-4 (NIV) Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. 2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. 3 For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. 4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

At its height, Pompano Beach's Odd Breed in Pompano Beach was one of the best-regarded breweries in Florida, winning four GABF medals over a span of three years, and shipping mixed-culture beers to fans around the world. However, real-estate market forces ultimately worked against the niche brewery, and founder and brewer Matt Manthe closed up shop in the summer of 2024. That's no reason not to talk brewing, however, and Manthe learned plenty over his years shepherding his mixed cultures from homebrew to commercial scale, changing and adapting processes along the way. While he's now brewing classic lager and ale styles in the mountains of Colorado—at Dillon Dam, about 70 miles west of Denver—mixed-culture beers still hold a strong place in his heart. In this episode, he discusses: building a mixed culture through homebrewing shifting from mixed-culture to Saccharomyces fermentation to control acid production choosing primary strains, from London Ale III to 34/70, to optimize flavor, manage acidity, and more boosting hops with specific flavors and aromas for fermentation precursors challenges with fruit processing and refermentation the importance of not letting barrels sit unfilled blending very different base beers to achieve a finished product that's greater than the sum of its parts And more. 257– How do you show someone who you really are? You've probably heard the phrase, “When someone shows you who they really are, believe them.”  I had a friend who used to say that all the time to remind herself that one person in particular she had been associated with in the past were not a good influence on her. She had been fooled by his attractive personality and the smooth words he spoke. But his actions, the way he actually treated her, were harmful and even abusive. It took her years to break away from the spell he had on her. It's important to show people who you really are and not try to fool anyone.Recently during my prayer time, God said to me: Show Me who you are.My first response was, “God, You already know me. You already know who and what I am. Why do You need me to show You who I am?”But God showed me what He was really asking. In this week's episode, I talk aboutGod showing Moses all His goodnessGod telling Moses to present himself to HimGod telling Job to stand before Him and show he was a manThe importance of acknowledging who you are as a child of GodDoing this in God's presenceYou can ask God to show you who He isAnd much moreWhen God asks you to show Him who you are, remember you are the salt of the earth, stand forth and let your light shine. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, the 27th of August, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to the Gospel of Matthew 13:16: “But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear;…” The Lord has given us spiritual eyes and spiritual ears so that we can see and hear directly from Him. You and I need to lift up our eyes and open our ears much better. He who aims at the stars aims too low! We have got to aim higher, above the stars. 1 Corinthians 2:9: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”You know how much God has in store for you, why are we grovelling when we should be standing tall and aiming high? I want to ask you a question, how big is God? Well, God is as big as you allow Him to be in your life and today we need to lift up our eyes and open our ears.A very famous South African statesman, Jan Smuts said, “A man is not defeated by his opponents but by himself.” We really need to understand that. I remember going to Sweden, many, many years ago. We were praying in the vestry at the back of the church before the service started. One man said to me, ‘What are you doing over here? Why don't you go back to Africa? We don't have poverty or hunger here.” And then a lady started to cry. She said, “Angus, here we have everything that opens and closes - we have water that we can drink out of the lakes, we have the biggest trucks in the world but we keep Jesus in a matchbox and sometimes we just let Him out a little bit. Please pray for us. Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Don't tie God's hands by doubt and unbelief. Write that book that you want to write, start that business that you believe God wants you to start. Study and finish - to be that doctor that can help the poor and the sick. Train hard and be an international sportsman so that you can glorify God on the podium, like so many Christians have done in the Olympic Games. Do not limit God in your life.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Sunday morning, the 5th of May, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in Psalm 31:19: “Oh, how great is Your goodness,Which You have laid up for those who fear You,Which You have prepared for those who trust in YouIn the presence of the sons of men!”Then we go straight to 1 Corinthians 2:9: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”Why do you and I always seem to settle for second best? The Lord has stored up such good things for you and I. He has stored up such good things for those who reverently respect God. Jesus has prepared so much for those who hold Him in affectionate reverence. Isn't that beautiful? I got that out of the Amplified Bible (affectionate reverence), for those who obey Him and for those who recognise the benefits that He has given to us.We think of the Prodigal Son. He had so much prepared for him, he had an inheritance. His father was a wealthy farmer. He was going to inherit part of that farm with his brother, but what did he do? He went and squandered everything he had, and if you look at Luke 15:16, he ended up thinking to himself, “I will gladly eat the food that the pigs are eating.”It's like a little child. Have you ever seen a little baby who gets a beautiful Christmas present or a birthday present with all that shiny bright paper and big ribbons around it? The baby undoes everything, and there is a beautiful gift awaiting that baby, but the baby ends up playing with the paper and the ribbons and doesn't even look at the gift. You know, a very sad story - King David who killed Goliath, I think he was only about 13 years old, he traded in his glorious future for a lustful affair with another man's wife. Oh, it cost him dearly. Yes, he repented and yes, God forgave him, but he paid a terrible price after that. You never hear of David killing any Goliaths after that affair. You and I today, rather let's wait for the beautiful promises which God has prepared for us, and He will bless us immensely. Jesus bless you and goodbye.

Next up in our series of interviews from the 2023 Foeder for Thought festival, Kate Bernot is talking to Matt Manthe from Odd Breed Brewing in Pompano Beach, Florida. Most of the locations of the brewers we speak to at Foeder for Thought come from far and wide, and usually from places with more mild climates than Florida has to offer. So Matt and Odd Breed adapt their process and expectations to that reality, working with yeast strains and styles that provide the nuanced results they're looking for. He also talks about what it takes to help grow the audience for these beers in Florida, which is a younger scene that markets like California or the Northeast. One of the methods Matt enjoys most is fresh hopping his wild ales for a somewhat hybrid style of IPA and wild and sour beer that is delighting his fans.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 14th of February, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Isaiah 40:28:“Have you not known?Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord,The Creator of the ends of the earth,Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.”Wow! He doesn't rest - He is awake, and He is waiting to hear you this morning, my dear friend. Then we go straight to the Book of Romans 11:34-35:“For who has known the mind of the Lord?Or who has become His counselor?”“Or who has first given to HimAnd it shall be repaid to him?”We can't give Him anything; He is God! No one, not even Albert Einstein, can know the mind of Christ. Now this Lord, this God, our God, He has a plan for you, and He has a plan for me. He says in 1 Corinthians 2:9: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” What a beautiful promise! As a 15-year-old boy, in Central Zambia, a place called Kitwe, I remember sitting on an ant hill as a young boy, and I used to dream of preaching to multitudes of people about my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Oh, folks, it has happened. Yes, more than once. Please today, do not limit God. Dream your dream. He did it and He still is doing it for me, and He can do it for you too. Have a wonderful day,Jesus bless you and goodbye.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name. It is Sunday morning, the 5th of November 2023, and this is your friend Angus Buchan with a thought for the day. We start with 1 Corinthians 2:9:But as it is written:"Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him."Oh, that is good news, the best news I've heard today. I want you to visualise a little street urchin selling newspapers on a busy street corner in a big city like London or New York. He's trying to sell these newspapers, and to get rid of them, he needs to be convinced to convince other people to buy them. He is full of excitement and vitality. He's got a bundle of newspapers under his arm and one shaking up and down and saying to everyone walking past going to work, have you heard the good news? We've got the scoop. This is the good news. Hear ye, hear ye, the good news. The good news is a baby has been born in a village called Bethlehem in the country of Israel in the Middle East. His name is Emmanuel, God with us. Matthew 1:23:"Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."You need to buy this newspaper today. Do you know that His father is country Carpenter? His mother, a beautiful young virgin who has never known a man - it's miraculous! Have you heard the good news? You know what's happened? He's grown into a very strong young man and they say that he is healing the sick. He's setting the captives free. He is actually raising the dead. Crowds are flocking towards Him to hear and see what He's doing. They say He is the son of God, but you know the best news of all? He's coming back again! Buy this newspaper, read it and then tell everybody the good news. Jesus bless you and have a wonderful Sunday and tell somebody the good news. Goodbye

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 7th of October, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in 1 Corinthians 2:9: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him."What a beautiful scripture! It has touched my heart so deeply this morning. Another translation says, "Things never discovered or heard of before, things beyond our ability to imagine, these are the many things God has in store for all His lovers." Isn't that beautiful? And yet another translation says, "No one has ever seen or heard anything like this, never so much as to imagine anything quite like it, what God has arranged for those who love Him."Oh, my dear friend, I love Him so much! You have got no idea how much I love Him. He's been with me through thick and thin. He has been with me when others have rejected me, when they have castigated me, when they have told lies about me, He has been with me. He has never once left me in over 40 years of ministry. You know, I just want to tell you about one highlight because this morning, this message is particularly for you, Sir, to encourage you that He has not forgotten you and in fact, that He has very special plans for you if you love Him. There is the qualification. Many years ago, a very, very dear friend of mine, the CEO of possibly the biggest publishing house in South Africa, came to me and said, "Angus, we are going to do a Bible for you, a Bible print for you." I couldn't believe it. I nearly passed out! You know how much I love the Bible. You will never see a photograph of me without me holding my Bible because the Bible is Jesus Christ in print. He said, "We are going to do a Bible for you, and we are going to put one of your devotionals running right through it from the Book of Genesis to Revelation.Well, I tell you, I was so overwhelmed - "Eye has not see, ear has not heard…" I held a banquet on the evening that it was printed. For the first time in my life, I went and hired a tuxedo. Can you imagine me in a tuxedo? We had a splendid evening, I invited all my special friends and those who have been involved with this ministry from the start, and we celebrated. I want to tell you, my dear friend, that even to be associated with the word of God blew my mind. I never dreamt in a million years that I would even have my name on the cover of a Bible. Now, I am not being disrespectful, not at all. It's the Bible with Grassroots Reflections. It is one of the dearest gifts the Lord could ever have given me. Today, He has plans for you if you love Him,Jesus bless you and goodbye.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Friday morning, the 22nd of September, 2023 and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Isaiah 64 and I am reading verse 4: “For since the beginning of the worldMen have not heard nor perceived by the ear,Nor has the eye seen any God besides You,Who acts for the one who waits for Him.”Then we go to 1 Corinthians 2:9-10: But as it is written:“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”This morning, we need to start to think out of the box. Write that down somewhere. We need to stop limiting God. You see, the Lord has many things planned for you and me, my dear friend, but the problem is, we do not give Him an opportunity to show us what He has planned for us. You know, we read that first scripture:“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” We quote that quickly, and we don't always quote verse 10. You see, the Spirit of the Lord, the Holy Spirit is the one who gives us our game plan. Now, in order for Him to give us our game plan, we need to set ourselves apart so that He can speak to us. I want to tell you that every time the Lord has used me in any area which is much bigger than me (which is most times - I would never attempt such things in my own strength!) it has been when I have been fasting and praying.I remember going to a lake not far from our farm, Shalom, with a bucket of water and a one-man tent and I stayed there for a number of days until God spoke to me through His Spirit, and I clearly heard, “Go to the rugby stadium at Kings Park in Durban and book it for an event.” I was petrified but it was so clear. He never spoke to me audibly, I have never had that privilege, but He spoke clearly in my heart and through the scriptures, and the rest, as they say, is history.Today, lift up your eyes. Today, expect great things from God, attempt great things for God, as William Carey said, and you will be surprised, very pleasantly surprised, at what the Lord has in store for you.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.

Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. For Season 6, Jack and I have again decided to go ad-free. I do this because I love mysteries, Jack does it because he loves me. Jack maybe a starving college student but it's because… We do ask you support the writers of our show. This week it's Chuck Brownman. Help other listeners and readers find him. In your review, tell him Tina and Jack said ‘Hi'. Make writing for Mysteries to Die For the best decision he could have made. This is Season 6, Things that Go Jack in the Night. This season contains truly imaginative mysteries around one of the most common words in the English language. From the brandy distilled from hard cider known as applejack to that nefarious one-eyed jack, to the animals, vegetables, fruits, tools, weapons, and slang, the way the word “jack” is used in the English language is truly unique, inventive, and too numerous for me to count. And yes, it is also the name of my piano player and producer. For Episode 2, a Lumberjack is the featured jack. This is Who Felled “Lumber Jack?” by Chuck BrownmanABOUT LumberjackWikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LumberjackThe term lumberjack is of Canadian derivation. Lumber = tree, jack = manThe first attested use of the word comes from an 1831 letter to the Cobourg Star and General Advertiser in the following passage: "my misfortunes have been brought upon me chiefly by an incorrigible, though perhaps useful, race of mortals called lumberjacks, whom, however, I would name the Cossack's of Upper Canada, who, having been reared among the oaks and pines of the wild forest, have never been subjected to the salutary restraint of laws."The term lumberjack is primarily historical; logger is used by workers in the 21st century. When lumberjack is used, it usually refers to a logger from an earlier time before the advent of chainsaws, feller-bunchers and other modern logging equipment. Other terms for the occupation include woodcutter, shanty boy and the colloquial term woodhick (Pennsylvania, US).A logger employed in driving logs down a river was known locally in northern North America as a river pig, catty-man, river hog, or river rat. The term lumberjill has been known for a woman who does this work; for example, in Britain during World War II. In Australia, the occupation is referred to as timber cutter or cool cutters.ABOUT Chuck BrownmanChuck Brownman has spent the last twenty-five-plus years working on becoming an “overnight writing sensation.” Concentrating on writing mystery / suspense short fiction, his work has been published in several anthologies, including the 2019 Eyes of Texas anthology (Down & Out Press), Volumes 4 and 5 of the annual Death Edge Tales anthology, and a Book-of-the-Month club anthology. May 3: Saints Philip and James, Apostles First Century Feast; Liturgical Color: Red Patron Saint of hatmakers and pastry chefs (Philip) and pharmacists (James)The smaller the town the bigger the manThe popes follow one another chronologically just like the presidents of the United States. One after another, after another, each inheriting the powers and responsibilities of his office. President John F. Kennedy followed President Dwight D. Eisenhower, just as Pope Saint John Paul II followed The Venerable Pope John Paul I. But there is a difference. Jesus' placing of Saint Peter as the symbolic and jurisdictional head of the universal Church is, of course, more significant than the popular election of a political leader. The papacy is also different in that every pope is, theologically speaking, the “direct successor” of Saint Peter, the first pope. From this perspective, every pope after Saint Peter is a second pope. So, for example, the two hundredth pope, chronologically, was still the second pope, theologically.  No president would claim he is the direct successor of George Washington. He is the successor of his predecessor. Theological truths transcend space and time, since their source, God, exists outside of space and time. The Office of St. Peter is theologically guaranteed by the easy-to-find, on-the-surface-of-the-text words of Christ telling Saint Peter that he is the rock upon which He will build His Church. Today's Pope, and every pope, occupies that same office, is protected by that same divine guarantee, and immediately succeeds Saint Peter when he is chosen by the Holy Spirit to occupy his chair. What pertains to the Office of the Bishop of Rome also pertains to the Office of the Twelve Apostles. Today's saints, Philip and James, were called by name by Christ Himself. And after being called, they took the step that many who are called never take. They followed! The Twelve walked at Christ's side on dusty trails during His years of public ministry. They ate and drank with Him by the fire. They slept under the cold desert sky with Him. And Jesus looked right into their eyes, and only their eyes, and spoke directly to their faces, and only their faces, when He said on a Thursday night that was deeply holy, “Do this in memory of me.” And then they did that, and many other things besides, in memory of Him, for the rest of their lives. The four marks of the true Church are proof of its authenticity. “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic” are the trademark stamp of the true Church, proving it is the Church  founded by Jesus Christ. No other ecclesial community bears this trademark, and none except the Orthodox even claims to bear it. The mark of “One” means the Church is visibly one in spite of its many tongues, nations, classes, and races. The Church is one in her doctrine, her Sacraments, and her hierarchy. This oneness is not theoretical. It is tangible, real, and identifiable even to those without a doctorate in theology. This one, Christ-founded Church began with twelve followers who gathered as one around Jesus. These Twelve eventually appointed their own successors, who then, in turn, appointed successors, and so on through the centuries down to the present. The universal college of bishops, the successor body to the Twelve Apostles, is the means by which the Oneness, or unity, of the Church is expressed, protected, and guaranteed. Bishops are not a secondary attribute or development of Christianity. They are embedded into and conjoined with the Word of God in one complex reality. They are not an outside source of authority external to Scripture. There simply would be no Scripture without that pre-existing authority which nurtured and developed it. The Church was the incubator of the New Testament. Not much is known with certainty about the Apostles Philip and James, apart from their names and some few references in the New Testament. Saint James, commonly called the “Less” due perhaps to his short stature, was probably the cousin of Jesus. Saint Philip was from tiny Bethsaida in Galilee. After he received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, he descended the stairs of the Upper Room and just kept walking into the darkness, his later life and labors unknown to history. More than having specific details about their later Christian exploits, it is more critical to know that Philip and James, and all the Apostles, are the sheet of bedrock into which the nascent Church sunk her deepest pillars and upon whose sturdy foundation the Church's great weight still rests. Philip and James' theological legacy continues today in every Bishop who teaches, sanctifies, and governs the baptized people of God.Saints Philip and James, your hidden witness to Christ is less well-known than that of other Apostles, but is eloquent testimony to your quiet fidelity to building the Church after the Ascension. From your exalted place in Heaven, intercede for all who seek your assistance.

In a recent FiveThirtyEight poll, 60 percent of men surveyed said society puts pressure on men to behave in a way that is unhealthy or bad. Men account for 80 percent of suicides in the United States, and 3 in 10 men have suffered from depression. Ed Adams and Ed Frauenheim say a big part of the problem is a model of masculinity that's become outmoded and even dangerous, to both men and women. The conventional notion of what it means to be a man--what Adams and Frauenheim call "Confined Masculinity"--traps men in an emotional straitjacket; steers them toward selfishness, misogyny, and violence; and severely limits their possibilities. As an antidote, they propose a new paradigm: Liberating Masculinity. It builds on traditional masculine roles like the protector and provider, expanding men's options to include caring, collaboration, emotional expressivity, an inclusive spirit, and environmental stewardship. Some of the topics covered in this one:A better definition of masculinity to better serve men and womenBetter ways to show up a manThe top commonalities among great leadersThe future direction of masculinity Surviving growing up as a male in societyThe damage done to young men growing up in the Man BoxAbout My Esteemed Guest, Ed Frauenheim:Ed Frauenheim was senior director of content at Great Place to Work--the research organization behind Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For" list. He has written or cowritten articles for Fortune, Inc., and Wired and is the coauthor of three books.Ed Frauenheim has wrestled with what it means to be a man for four decades. In his personal and professional lives. As a young man, an adult, a father. As an observer of the best workplaces in the world. As cofounder of a group trying to reinvent organizations. The traditional male obsessions with winning, with brute strength, with becoming king of the corporate hill haunted Ed for much of his life. But through personal reflection, mindful practices, and plenty of help, he has come to redefine as worthy traits like emotional sensitivity, exuberance, and camaraderie. He's living a fuller life as a result.Ed has cowritten three other books, including A Great Place to Work for All: Better for Business, Better for People, Better for the World. In that book and other content, Ed has explored how our more-complex, interconnected economy is calling on men to break free of a narrow version of masculinity. If you like what you've heard at The Evolved Caveman podcast, support us by subscribing, leaving reviews on Apple podcasts. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning the 24th of January, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan with a thought for today.“For since the beginning of the worldMen have not heard nor perceived by the ear,Nor has the eye seen any God besides You,Who acts for the one who waits for Him.”Isaiah 64:4I love that,” …who acts for the one who waits for Him.” “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”1 Corinthians 2:9You know Romans 8:19 says that all creation, that's the world, is waiting with expectation, on tiptoes, for the manifestation of the sons of God. The world does not know what to do anymore. They are waiting to see what the sons and daughters are going to do about it. The question is, ”What are you and I doing about it?” The Lord has prepared some amazing things for us but with faith we've got to step out and take it.One of my heroes is a man by the name of Dwight Lyman Moody, an American evangelist that lived in the 1800's. He was known as D.L. Moody. He had a very, very bad start in life. He came from a very big family, his father died before he even remembered him. His mother was very poor but she brought up 8 or 9 children. D. L. Moody was a man who took God's word literally. He said, ”The world has yet to see what God can do with a man fully consecrated to Him, and by God's help I aim to be that man.” Wow, and he sure was! Folks, that man was a shoe salesman, that's all he was. He was known as the greatest layman. He had no education whatsoever, he had a Grade 4 education and yet that man took God's word literally and he began the massive Moody Bible Institute which is still going on today. He also started two publishing houses. He was a great evangelist as well. When he went to Great Britain for a campaign, literally trains of people would follow him from city to city. He's the one who said, ”Give your life to God because He can do more with it than you can.” He said, ”If God is your partner, make your plans big.”Have a wonderful day today. Jesus bless you and goodbye.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 21st of January, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.“But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence.” 1 Corinthians 1:27-29And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”John 1:46Folks, the Lord chooses the nobodies of this world to do His bidding because He will not share His glory with any man. Philip was telling Nathaniel that they had found Jesus, the Son of God. Where does He live? He lives in Nazareth and of course, Nathaniel said, “Can anything good come out of that little dusty town called Nazareth?”. Well, the Prince of Peace came out of that little town, and what was He? Was He a doctor of philosophy? Was He a professor at the universities? No, He was a simple country carpenter, but He was God made flesh, Emanuel, God with us. I want to say to you today, do not despise your situation. One thing the Lord has taught me is that He is no respecter of persons. He will use any man, any woman, any boy, any girl that will put up their hand and say, “Lord, I will go for you.” The Lord chose twelve disciples. They were uneducated. They were country fishermen. The Lord chose the Father of the nations, Abraham. He was a farmer. The Lord chose a beautiful, young Jewish maiden to be the mother of His Son, to carry God in her womb for nine months, and then give birth to Him and bring Him up and look after Him. She was uneducated but she had a heart after God.I want to say to you today, do not despise yourself. Make yourself available to the Lord and He will use you more than you could have ever dreamed. “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”1 Corinthians 2:9This is our time. This is the time to stand up and say, “To God be all the glory!”Jesus bless you and have a wonderful Saturday,Goodbye.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 15th of October 2022, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. There's a scripture that all of us know so well but we don't always read it. Do we believe it? This is what it says:“But those who wait on the LordShall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles,They shall run and not be weary,They shall walk and not faint.”Isaiah 40:31That is a beautiful scripture - to be still and to know that He is God. (Psalm 46:10.) If you are going through a time at the moment when you feel down and you are a Christian, you love Jesus, you haven't done anything wrong, you are just feeling absolutely flat, and it is like the devil himself is telling you all kinds of lies and you don't know what to do. Physically, you are healthy, the business is going well, and the family is well but you just feel flat. Do you know that feeling? Oh yes! There are many, many mighty men and women of God, preachers of the Gospel who go through these times. C.H. Spurgeon was one, the prophet, John the Baptist went through that, and Elijah the Tishbite also went through times of depression and stress and also feeling worthless. How do we handle a situation like that? Is that the time that we phone up our friends? No. Is that the time when we have to go to our Bible Study or the pastor or maybe wait for church? No. What do we do? We go into our quiet time room, that place where you sit quietly every morning and you spend time in the presence of God. It might be on top of a mountain, it might be in your tractor, or it might be when you are going for a jog. You need to get aside on your own, and then the Lord Jesus will start to remind you of all the good things that you have done. That's right, the blessing you have been to so many people, to me, to your family and to your loved ones. Then when the devil comes to try and tell you lies, you don't have to listen to him.“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”1 Corinthians 2:9This is not the end of the road for you! This could be the beginning of the finest time in your life. It is not about your age, it is not about your qualifications. What it is actually about is spending time alone with God. He will lift you up. He will strengthen you and He will give you a new opportunity to serve Him. Do it today! Don't neglect that quality time and quantity time with the Lord.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.

A very good morning to you! It is Monday morning, 2nd of May 2022 and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today! If we go to Deuteronomy 32, I am reading from verse 10:“He found him in a desert landAnd in the wasteland, a howling wilderness; He encircled him, He instructed him,He kept him as the apple of His eyeAs an eagle stirs up its nest,Hovers over its young,Spreading out its wings, taking them up,Carrying them on its wings,So the Lord alone led him,And there was no foreign god with him.”The apple of His eye! “For he who touches you touches the apple of His eye.” Zachariah 2:8“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you…”John 15:16Do you know that you are the apple of God's eye?I have a daughter, my youngest, she has siblings but she openly tells her brothers and sisters that she is my favourite child. By the way, she is married and has three boys of her own... Of course her siblings do not believe that for a moment but that is not the point - The point is, she does! The Lord says:“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”1 Corinthians 2:9You see, it depends what you feel today... I want to tell you that He loves you so much that He died for you! There was a very famous Zulu preacher named was William Duma. This little man was driving his little car one dark night in a dangerous township area in Kwa-zulu Natal, South Africa. As he came around a corner he found that the road was blocked with debris. So he stopped his little car, in the middle of the road, got out and started to move the branches off of the road. Some men came out of the bush with knives and clubs to attack him, the man of God, but he stopped them in their tracks. He said, “Do you know who I am?”. They stopped, they couldn't believe it. He said, “I am a child of the Living God. If you touch me, you touch God.” They dropped their weapons and ran into the bush. He cleared the road, got in his little car and proceeded on his way - God's man!Today, as you go out remember, you are the apple of God's eye and if God is with you, there is no man that will harm you.Have a blessed day and God bless you.Goodbye.

May 3: Saints Philip and James, ApostlesFirst CenturyFeast; Liturgical Color: RedPatron Saint of hatmakers and pastry chefs (Philip) and pharmacists (James)The smaller the town the bigger the manThe popes follow one another chronologically just like the presidents of the United States.
