Show SummaryOn today's episode, we're featuring a conversation with Marine Corps Veteran Dr. Derek Abbey, President and CEO of Project Recover, the nation's leading citizen-led non-profit organization to search, locate, document, recover, and repatriate the over 81,500 American service members missing in action. Provide FeedbackAs a dedicated member of the audience, we would like to hear from you about the show. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts about the show in this short feedback survey. By doing so, you will be entered to receive a signed copy of one of our host's three books on military and veteran mental health. About Today's GuestDerek Abbey, Ph.D. is Project Recover's President and CEO. He served for 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. His academic research and his post-military career have focused on connecting veterans with college opportunities, He began as Project Recover team member in 2004 and spent five years on the Board of Directors before being appointed as President / CEO.Derek Abbey grew up in Seattle. He was the only child of a single mom doing the best she could to raise a “rambunctious boy.” Her unexpected death when Derek was 13 turned his life upside-down. For four years, he lived primarily with his aunt and uncle. Finally, at 17, Derek ran away to the Marine Corps. Derek Abbey had been without a rudder and sail for most of his life. In the USMC, he found a structure and system he could succeed in.First, he enlisted in the Marine Corps as a communicator. After his initial enlistment, the Marine Corps selected him for a commissioning program and sent him to Oregon State University to earn a degree. Upon receiving his degree he was commissioned as a ground officer. Finally, Derek was selected for an aviation contract while completing the six months long Basic School. This combination of events, going into the military and then to college, set the stage for Derek's academic and professional accomplishments. It also is the seed that gave rise to a passion for connecting veterans with educational opportunities. It is also, of course, the precursor which led up to his current role with Project Recover.Derek Abbey attended flight school in Pensacola FL and graduated as a Naval Flight Officer. He was then sent to the F/A-18 Hornet Fleet Replacement Squadron at MCAS Miramar where he earned his designation as an F/A-18 Weapons Systems Officer. He was then immediately assigned to his first squadron, VMFA(AW)-121, and deployed for Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Over the next few years, he deployed two more times to Iraq and once to the Far East. He holds more combat hours in the Hornet than hours in peaceful skies. After an extended and successful tour in the Hornet, Derek left flight operations to become a Plank Owner (original member) at Marine Corps Special Operations Command as the Air Officer for the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, now 1st Raider Battalion. During this period with the Marine Raiders, he served in Marine Special Operations Company Delta and was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as their Forward Air Controller, Special Operations JTAC, and Executive Officer. In 2009, Derek was selected by the Marine Corps for the Advanced Degree Program and assigned to the University of San Diego. “In 2009-2011, there was a huge influx of military into higher education. Universities were figuring out how to work with these populations.” While earning a Masters in Higher Education Leadership, Derek conducted research on how universities and colleges work with military-connected students on their campuses. His thesis provided best practices for colleges to use in creating successful military programs on their campuses. In his twilight tour from 2011-2014, Derek served as the Director of the Marine Corps' Train the Trainer School in Camp Lejeune, NC. His organization was responsible for the training and education of instructors, curriculum developers, staff and leadership of 93 training units across the Marine Corps. Derek retired from the USMC as a Major in 2014. Shortly thereafter, he began his doctorate in Leadership Studies at the University of San Diego. Derek focused again on conducting practical research that would help make higher education more accessible to veterans, the majority of whom would be first-generation college students. His research has garnered national attention and resulted in multiple speaking engagements. Derek earned his Ph.D. in 2019.Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, Derek began working at San Diego State University as a Military Liaison Officer in the Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center. In this position, he focused on outreach to the military-connected students in the region in order to provide guidance for them attaining their higher education goals. In 2015, he took over the Military and Veterans Program at The University of San Diego. During his time with USD, he created and implemented programming that resulted in the growth of the military-connected population by 30% and the program being recognized as one at the top in the nation. Derek was the advocate for this population not only at USD but on other campuses in the region through the Military Ally program and with organizations across the nation attempting to provide better educational guidance for the military population. In 2017, Derek took over West Coast Operations for the Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) as the Senior Director of the West and Northwest Regions. TMF is a veterans service organization that works to unite the American community through programming that emphasizes the value of strong character. In this role, he oversaw the strategy development, program implementation and expansion, budget execution, and evaluation in TMF's largest geographical region. Learn more about the NetSuite Business Accelerator here: NetSuite.com/Accelerator On this episode, host Kendall Fisher joins Director of the NetSuite Business Accelerator, George Ploss. NetSuite was founded with a mission to help entrepreneurs unlock business growth, and more than two decades and 28,000 customers later, we've never wavered from that mission. Ploss discusses how the Business Accelerator expands on that, helping entrepreneurs and leaders from diverse communities build successful businesses with unified information they need to achieve their vision. We kick things off with an introduction to George and his career journey, which began with nine years in the Marine Corps (2:49). After spending a few years as a solutions engineer with Oracle, he led Oracle's Veterans Program (5:36) and then the Solutions Consultant Academy here at NetSuite (10:32) with diversity and inclusion always at the forefront of his mind (13:41). All of that eventually unfolded in an idea to create the NetSuite Accelerator program (18:00). More Black businesses have been founded in the past two years than in the past quarter century, and Ploss says that's why this is an optimal time to help them build for sustainable growth (21:40). But the program will expand beyond Black businesses. Ploss explains the Business Accelerator will eventually include other diverse communities, too (23:37). He explains that the program will offer processes, best practices, guidance and technology required for sustainable growth (26:04). Ploss discusses what success means to the program, and as he looks out five to ten years, what success really means to him (28:38). Tune in to find out!Like what you learned? Jennifer (Jenny) Moser, Associate Director Scientific Programs, and Jennifer (Jenn) Deen, Associate Director Public Relations for the Million Veterans Program share information on this program that will change the way medicine is practiced. The Million Veteran program at the VA is one of the largest genetics research programs in the world with nearly 840,000 veterans participating. The goal is for Veterans to someday walk into a doctor's office and receive health care designed just for them. Through genetic research, discoveries about the biological basis of disease and illness can help researchers better understand how they work and potentially lead to new ways of identifying risk, treating diseases, and ultimately, prevention. Bill has been a participant in the program for about the last five years and the printed materials that he has received from the Million Veteran Program have been very interesting, to say the least.

The Storm Skiing Podcast #19 | Download this episode on iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, and Pocket Casts | Read the full overview at skiing.substack.com.Who: Cheryl Jensen, President and Founder of Vail Veterans Program All photos courtesy of Vail Veterans Program. Why I interviewed her: Because as I’ve stated many times before, skiing should be for everyone. There are many obstacles to accessing the mountains, from cost to the remoteness of many ski areas to the sheer difficulty of learning to make it down the hill to an ingrained ski culture that often makes outsiders feel unwelcome. The disabled, who must access and learn how to use highly specialized equipment and navigate a lift-served skiing world that is not necessarily constructed to serve them, are among those that start with an enormous disadvantage. The Vail Veterans Program deconstructs this puzzle for a venerable group of disabled: combat-injured U.S. military veterans healing from catastrophic injuries, including but not limited to, “loss of multiple limbs, severe burns, spinal cord injuries, post-traumatic stress syndrome, and traumatic brain injuries.” The program flies these healing wounded out to Vail Mountain and, at no cost to them, hosts them and their families for multi-day programs of skiing, healing, and conviviality. I wanted to get an understanding of why they started this program, how they manage to do it at no cost to the participants, and how the ski industry was building up its overall capacity to serve sit-skiers and others using non-traditional equipment or methods. There was no one better to speak to this than Cheryl Jensen, the founder and leader of the whole operation. What we talked about: The unusual Fourth of July holiday in Vail Valley; the foundation’s roots in adaptive programs at Breckenridge and social events in Washington, D.C. and Vail; the serendipitous meeting that launched the first event; how a one-time event with seven wounded veterans from Walter Reed Medical Center expanded into a full-fledged program; the military centers that the Vail Veterans Program works with today; how a wounded first-time snowboarder-turned-monoskier in the program became a competitor at the 2010 Vancouver and 2014 Sochi Paralympics; what one veteran said to Cheryl to inspire her to grow the program into a full-time affair; how she felt when the first planeload of wounded veterans arrived on the tarmac at Eagle County Airport; why the physical limitations are only part of the trauma the wounded veterans are coping with; the healing power of moving through the program with similarly injured veterans; the deep connections that veterans across generations share; Vail Ski Resort’s adaptive program and lift system and how they accommodate the Vail Veterans Program; the growth of adaptive skiing infrastructure around the U.S.; the exhilaration of schussing from never-ever to Vail’s Back Bowls in the space of several days; the challenges that sit skiers and others face in getting around the mountain and how that’s evolving; the power of quieting the mind through sports; how to maximize the value of a multi-day program while managing your own expectations, from a foundation point of view, for what’s realistic to achieve in that timeframe; the Vail Veterans Program’s relationship with the United States military and how they work together to choose participants; why Cheryl stopped calling the event the “Soldiers Ski Weekend”; the veteran who swore he would be “dead in the gutter” without this program; recollections of a heliski adventure; how the program is able to include flights, hotels, meals, gear, lessons, and everything else to participants at no cost; the stress caregivers bear and why the Vail Veterans Program tailors separate programs for them; why families are invited along with the vets; the content of their summer programs; why one element of the program runs in Orlando; and how the program and its past participants have dealt with the shutdown orders and isolation of Covid-19. What I got wrong: I referred generically to all veterans as “soldiers” several times in the first half of the interview, before Cheryl shared an anecdote about the veteran who pulled her aside at an early event and informed her that marines were not soldiers. Oops. Well, I didn’t know that either. Consider me corrected. Why I thought that now was a good time for this interview: Because as the ski industry states its intent to make skiing more inclusive, we ought to consider what that means in the broadest possible context. In Storm Skiing Podcast conversations with National Brotherhood of Skiers President Henri Rivers and Winter 4 Kids CEO Schone Malliet, we talked extensively about skiing’s failure to market to and develop more diverse skiers. While veterans do not on their own fall into that category, the Vail Veterans Program’s focus on the tragically wounded among them spotlights the importance of better serving disabled skiers in general. Plus, this is the month that the U.S. celebrates its freedom with the Fourth of July holiday, and there’s no better time to thank our veterans for their commitment to our nation and the sacrifices they have made in its name.
