For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali spoke to musician and writer Katy Lironi to talk all about her memoir Matilda In The Middle, which is available now, published with Into Books.Katy gives an overview of the book, talks about the title, breaks down the subtitle of 'family, music and mayhem' and how those three aspects work together to tell the full story. She also makes it clear that while this is a memoir about family, this is the story as she sees it.She then talks about SandFest, Choir 21, her work with Down's Syndrome Scotland, and the forthcoming event on the 21st March at The Book Nook in Stewarton which is part of World Down's Syndrome Day (details on the SWH! website). She also sets out the vital role music has played throughout her life, including the early years in East Kilbride, studying at Napier University and becoming part of the Edinburgh indie music scene as lead singer in The Fizzbombs, just what that time and place was like, the musical differences between East and West, returning home, and what happened next. The two then discuss the importance music continues to play for Katy, her husband Douglas, and their family (with Matilda In The Middle) be that making, performing, promoting, and releasing other people's, and what the future holds.Matilda In The Middle is a book which can be read in a number of ways, revealing something new each time, and it was fascinating to be able to talk to Katy all about it.Full details, including all the ways to listen, are over at scotswhayhae.com

Mike Welch is a truly inspiring leader.Dr Michael Welch OBE founded Blackcircles.com, the world's first click-to-fit online tyre retailer in 2002, selling the business to Michelin in 2015. Prior to Blackcircles.com, Michael started his career in the tyre business aged 15 in Liverpool, England, as a tyre installer with a local independent tyre dealer. He started his first online tyre business two years later, in 1995, after being made redundant. He subsequently sold that business to UK fast-fit chain Kwik Fit, where he was hired as the group's first head of e-commerce in the lead-up to Ford's £1 billion acquisition in 1999. In this role, he spent a few years between the UK and the US assisting the Ford group with their e-commerce execution. In 2016, during a brief period out of the tyre industry, he founded and chaired fashion retail startup Atterley.com, a global network of fashion boutiques. In 2019, Michael turned his attention to the US tyre market with his new venture, Tirescanner.com. The website serves as a platform for brick-and-mortar tyre retailers who are looking to compete with pure players for a share of the US online market. With an initial launch in Florida in 2019, Tirescanner.com has gone on to build a national network showcasing the very best of brick-and-mortar retail stores and mobile installation vans across the United States. The US tyre replacement market was valued at $42bn (USD) in 2019.In 2021, Tirescanner merged with Tirebuyer.com to create one of America's largest online tyre retailers, with over 11,000 installers across the USA. Bringing Tirescanner's strategy and expertise together with TireBuyer's scale, the aim of the merger is to create the country's leading online tyre experience.Michael established The Welch Trust in 2015 focusing on supporting children and young people in need of adoption and fostering, as a fostered and adopted person himself, as well as kids with critical and terminal illnesses. The Trust recently built its first ‘The Welch Learning Centre', a school computer and library service for children in Bali, Indonesia. In May 2021, The Welch Trust partnered with the Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity and NHS Lothian to bring MRI-guided Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) to Edinburgh's Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (RHCYP). This was the first time this laser technology was made available in Scotland. Michael also sits on the board and is a Patron of The Prince's Trust, the principal charity of HM the King. Michael was awarded an OBE (Officer of the British Empire) by the HM Queen Elizabeth ll in 2016 for services to business and charity. < 22:26 > TALKING POINTS Google's Project Oxygen was an evidence-based approach focusing on changing manager behaviour by identifying the 8 good behaviours of a manager. More recently another 2 behaviours have been identified by Google, to make 10 good behaviours. ‘The Big Reset Playbook: What's Working Now' published August 2020, by Josh Bersin Academy describes the React – Respond – Return – Transform cycle. Build back better. Make it a better world, better for your employees, more productive, more customer-focused. It's a pathway to transformation. Presenteeism leads to people just doing the minimum. People in organisations won't want to be told when COVID is over to just come back to work. People want flexibility and have their needs listened to and met. The rise of trust and support; working from home has forced managers to trust and be supportive of their employees. The launch of Sanofi University in March was accompanied by a company-wide challenge to achieve one million hours of learning by June. Amid COVID, some organizations are tightening the purse strings and won't do any learning until they know for certain what's happening. They see learning as a cost. Are they the ones not to thrive when recovery happens? We need to learn new things. We need to try new approaches. We need to innovate. We need to reframe, and how you can do those things without learning? When a manager says, ‘Don't think, just do', that's a recipe for disaster. It's going to require an innovative, adaptive approach moving forward into the future. Organisations are reassembling themselves as they're going along. Some organisations have turned on a pinhead.  There is a difference between individuals in organisations learning and organisational learning.  Works Cited Paine, Nigel, 'Workplace Learning', Kogan Page, www.KoganPage.com, January 2020. I first sat down with my guest in this episode, Pacific Rim College faculty member and herbalist Peter Conway, to record for my other podcast, Pacific Rim College Radio. However, I knew once the interview was over that I also needed to publish it here as, among other assets, Peter is freakishly intelligent and deeply committed to his purpose. He has lived in a van and a teepee, has fought for the preservation and dissemination of herbal medicine knowledge, and generally follows in life a punk rocker ethos. Listening to him talk about plant-spirit medicine is like listening to a living mystic – I actually think Peter is a living mystic – and his knowledge extends vastly beyond the bounds of herbal medicine. We touch base with myriad topics including chaos theory, inner reflection during Covid, punk rock, spirituality, and nature. Here are some more commonly known bits about Peter. He graduated from the College of Phytotherapy in the UK in 1995. Prior to joining Pacific Rim College in 2015, Peter taught for many institutions and co-wrote the BSc Degree course in Herbal Medicine at Napier University in. He served as president of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy for 12 years and is a former director of the European Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association. Peter is the author of “The Consultation in Phytotherapy” textbook that he is now revising for its second edition. Peter currently lives in Victoria, is one of 9 distinguished faculty members of Pacific Rim College Online's renowned Home Herbalist and Community Herbalist programs, and is working on an online project that will address “deep herbalism". Speaking of deep…that's Peter. This guy has so much wisdom that you might want to listen to this episode more than once. My guest in this episode, PRC faculty member and herbalist Peter Conway, has lived in a van and a teepee, has fought for the preservation and dissemination of herbal medicine knowledge, and generally follows in life a punk rocker ethos. I assure you that Peter is a freak, and that is one of his many endearing qualities. Listening to him talk about plant-spirit medicine is like listening to a living mystic. And yet much of his mystery is wrapped up in what he calls the mundane: the common and ordinary world of herbal medicine that we are all rooted in, even though most have perhaps never been conscious of those roots. From the distillation of alcohols and the production of colas to candies and perfumes, all were once forms of herbal medicine. Peter graduated from the College of Phytotherapy in the UK in 1995. Prior to joining Pacific Rim College in 2015, Peter taught for many institutions. The ground floor of Ulva house has a beautiful wooden floor, which you’ll hear throughout the course of the episode, as my dogs clatter around on it quite a bit. For which I apologise. Both of my dogs make an appearance at different points in the episode, so keep your ears peeled for their snoring and clickity-clackity noises. A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Quietly contemplative yet intensely evocative, Hannah Starkey's photographs explore the physical and psychological connections between the individual and her everyday urban surroundings. Since the beginning of her career, the artist has worked predominantly with women as her subjects, collaborating closely with actresses as well as anonymous acquaintances she meets on-site to develop intricately textured scenes. Stark architectural backdrops and strong associations of color and imagery heighten the sensation of her compositions on both a formal and associative level, triggering personal interpretations and a deeper mediation on the experience of the visual world at large. Born in Belfast in 1971, Hannah currently lives and works in London. She received a B.A. in Photography and Film from Napier University in Edinburgh in 1995 and an M.A. in Photography from Royal College of Art in London in 1997. She has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career, which include the Vogue Condé Nast Award (1997), the 3rd International Tokyo Photo Biennale’s Award for Excellence (1999), and the St. James Group Ltd Photography Prize (2002). In 2000, she presented her first major solo exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin. Other important solo presentations include Twenty-Nine Pictures at the Mead Gallery at Warwick Arts Centre in Coventry, UK (2011) and Church of Light Altarpiece, a site-specific commission for St. Catherine’s Church in Frankfurt (2010). Her work has also been exhibited as part of important group presentations at Tate Liverpool, Huis Marseille Museum for Photography in Amsterdam, Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, France, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, and the National Portrait Gallery in London, among other museums worldwide. Why We Need A Blockchain Bill The answer is simple: We want to lead the world, not fall behind.   Once we put the same legal weight behind blockchain technology we long ago did behind paper and 'wet signatures' we can help lead the world  ...replace many of our digital (banking, payments and other) slow toll-roads with far faster highways shrinking times from days to seconds (3 to 30 days through a bank network to 3 seconds on the Ripple network – that’s between 86,400 & 864,000 times faster, so let call it a round 100k times). With a similar reduction in costs, because there are no people involved once the network’s running. This doesn’t just make things a hundred thousand times faster and cheaper, removal of friction on this level makes possible all sorts of things that were completely non-starters before. On top of all that it makes possible a whole list of things proven impossible (at any scale) before. From micropayments to fractionalisation of assets, decoupling ownership from use of an asset (including houses, cars, art, goods in transit... to name a few) releasing trillions in value currently locked away. Which is why nimbler jurisdictions, Zug Switzerland, Singapore and Malta spring to mind, are leapfrogging the UK. Its why Liechtenstein have a Blockchain Act. This really matters Professor Bill Buchanan OBE, of Edinburgh’s Napier University explained to me - and why he’s launched a petition to parliament saying so. It matters because it means jobs and future prosperity. As well as losing our place in the world versus helping lead it. This is why you should sign the petition. Britain needs a Blockchain enabling bill. Please search for and sign UK petition 230869!

Dr Juliet McGrattan explains why her passion for fitness has led her to quit her job as a GP to concentrate on encouraging others to become more active, believing she can have more of an impact on people's health that way than writing prescriptions for tablets. Chris Thompson from Living Streets, the charity behind National Walking Month, talks about this year's #Try20 Campaign, aimed at getting us all to walk more every day and ideally reach the national guidelines of 150 minutes of exercise per week. Richard Forbes joins the Step It Up Highland walking group to find out how much of an impact regular walking is having on their physical and mental health.

Abstract: The title of this lecture is explained by Richard Murphy Architects' location between two different points pf view. There is little in our work that might be called avant-garde. The office does not subscribe to the high-octane world of the international 'starchitects' depositing iconic buildings in different cultures around the world, which whilst having some superficial photo-journalistic value, rarely repay close inspection. The other position is represented by the society in which we work, Edinburgh in particular, but also elsewhere in the UK. This is a city in which many citizens wish that the modern era had never occurred. Modern architecture, it seems to be universally agreed, has spoilt the view. However it is essential for the health of our culture that we make buildings that are recognisably of today so that in the future there will be some history of this era to preserve. Rooting recognisably new buildings into old places or particular landscapes; contributing towards rather than damaging, their location; continuing rather than fossilising, the history of a place: these are our objectives. We call it architecture of its time and place. Biography: Richard Murphy was educated at Newcastle and Edinburgh Universities. Before founding Richard Murphy Architects he worked for MacCormac Jamieson and Pritchard Architects in London, and directed the edinburgh office of Alsop Lyall & Stormer Architects. He has taught at Edinburgh University, Robert Gordon University, Edinburgh College of Art, Strathclyde University, The Technical University of Braunschweig, the University of Virginia and Syracruse University, New York State. Richard's publications include Carlo Scarpa and the Castelvecchio (Butterworths Architecture, 1991), Querini Stampalia Foundation, Carlo Scarpa (Phaidon Press, 1983) and An Architects' Appreciation of Charles Rennie Mackintosh (Bellew Publishing, 1990). He is an Academician of the Royal Scottish Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and an Honorary Fellow of Napier University. His practice has won 21 RIBA and RIAI awards in as many years.
