Special episode: What's at stake in the race for critical raw materials? by Devex
In April 2025's Recharge podcast, co-presenters Matt Fernley (Battery Materials Review) and Cormac O'Laoire (Electrios Energy) discuss some of the month's key talking points in the battery industry, including: Geopolitics and the impact of tariffs on the industry including around exemption of battery RMs from reciprocal tariffs; EVs and ESS impact; and could this actually be a positive in the end? The US Executive Order on Raw Materials - is it enough? The EU's strategic raw materials projects - does the EU "get it"? Cormac's postcard from Korea BYD and 1MW charging - how viable is it outside China? Mass market EV demand in Europe Changes to China's ESS mandate and its likely impact Will battery swapping go the way of the dinosaur in the passenger vehicle market?
AP correspondent Charles de Ledesma reports the UK government says it has bought enough raw materials to keep Britain's last steelmaking blast furnaces operating for the coming weeks.
Where tariffs bring chaos, ChAI brings cover. In this episode, Robin Merttens speaks with Tristan Fletcher, co-founder and CEO of ChAI, about how his team is using financial market techniques and AI to build insurance products that protect manufacturers from volatile input costs. What began in the world of hedge funds and speculative trading is now helping companies like recyclers and food manufacturers hedge against unpredictable raw material prices. Tristan explains how ChAI is transforming techniques once reserved for professional traders like satellite imagery, shipping data and price forecasting, into insurance-backed protection for real-world businesses. He also shares the story behind ChAI's first deal, the long journey to secure reinsurance capacity and the challenge of winning over regulators. This is an episode about pricing innovation, resilience in turbulent markets and what the insurance industry can do to keep pace with uncertainty. Plus, you'll learn a new word: Eigenzeit—and it might just reshape how you think about timing in insurance. Key Talking Points Democratising financial tools: why ChAI is bringing hedge fund-style analytics to manufacturers Turning speculation into protection: how AI price forecasting powers a new insurance product From cocoa to copper: insuring raw material volatility in food, packaging and recycling sectors Structuring the product: how ChAI created insurance that mirrors price hedging without regulatory red flags Regulatory hurdles: overcoming concerns about market risk and building legal confidence in a new model First deal breakthrough: how ChAI secured capacity from a major US reinsurer and wrote its first risk ESG implications: how the product supports the circular economy and reduces stockpiling The US vs the UK: why American risk carriers moved faster to back the product Market appetite – how volatility and geopolitical shocks like tariffs are driving inbound demand From startup to scale: why ChAI now needs more brokers, insurers and customers on board If you like what you're hearing, please leave us a review on whichever platform you use or contact Robin Merttens on LinkedIn. You're gonna mess up. You're gonna fumble. You're gonna make choices that feel good at the time and then sit with the aftermath, wondering if you're cut out for any of this. That doesn't mean you suck. It means you're human! And with being human comes discomfort, growth, re-evaluation, hard pivots, quiet grief, and (if you're lucky) a little clarity on the other side. Especially if you're a neurodivergent creative trying to build a business, express yourself, or simply exist in a system that was never designed for your kind of magic.
In this episode of Uncommon Sense with Ginny Robinson, I'm giving my take (to the best of my ability—because I'm not a tariff expert and neither are most of the people chiming in right now) on Trump's gutsy new tariff move. It's the one that's got half the country cheering and the other half clutching their pearls. While the media yells “economic suicide,” I'm here to suggest that this strategy might actually work—but not overnight. We'll talk about the possibility of long-term gain, the reality of short-term discomfort, and the cultural obsession with instant results when what's often required is patience. I will also go over our collective short attention spans and why longer attention spans are needed for understanding complex issues like this. Every answer won't fit in a 15 second soundbite. At the end of the day, we'll have to pray, wait, and see. Some of the smartest plays take time to unfold.—https://noblegoldinvestments.com/learn/gold-and-silver-guide/?utm_campaign=21243613394&utm_source=g&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=&utm_term=noble%20gold&seg_aprod=&ad_id=698073353663&oid=2&affid=1&utm_source=google&affiliate_source=googleads_brand_bmbc&utm_term=noble%20gold&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADQ2DzJSJ_mi5cJo8dO2FNUs7uNy-&gclid=CjwKCAjwktO_BhBrEiwAV70jXtjSCyioSM2Hz1McTAlR3f8t3KCDDN3-XBWLaIzwJmiEGe0ztxIk5RoCnM0QAvD_BwE
Critical raw materials - like rare earths, cobalt and lithium - play a central role in the energy transition and profoundly influence geopolitical dynamics. Their extraction may also amplify conflict and fragility risks in host countries. In this episode of the Climate Briefing, Ruth and Anna speak to Olivia Lazard (Fellow at Carnegie Europe) and Sophia Kalantzakos (Global Distinguished Professor, Environmental Studies and Public Policy, NYU Abu Dhabi) about the interlinkages between critical raw materials and geopolitics, the challenges associated with extraction, and what a ‘good' strategy for securing future access might look like.

Journalist Ed Conway went on a journey to discover where the things we use in everyday life come from. He narrowed that search down to six vital materials: sand, salt, iron, copper, oil and lithium. These materials, he says, are like a gateway allowing us to see the spectrum of different things around us that really do matter. These materials from the ground that have enabled us to connect with each other, to provide energy and make machines. Kazakhstan is a major producer of critical raw materials (CRMs), and an increasingly important energy supplier for the European Union. Metals and chemicals from Kazakhstan are helpful in the EU's efforts to advance the green and digital transition. The Central-Asian state is becoming a key player in supporting EU sectors such as the net-zero industry, space, defence, and technology. The EU-Kazakhstan relations were recently strengthened by the Annual Cooperation Council which took place in October 2024, which aims to strengthen political, economic and trade cooperation. Cooperation in the raw material sector was particularly reinforced by the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in November 2022.Kazakhstan's recent accession to the Mineral Security Partnership (MSP) Forum, which serves as a new platform for cooperation in the CRMs area, also broadened EU-Kazakhstan relations further. In the context of the upcoming European Commission's Raw Materials Week 2024, listen to this Euractiv Conference to explore the future of EU-Kazakhstan relations in the CRM sector and the emerging opportunities driven by the EU's green and digital transitions. Questions to be discussed include:- What are the implications of the Mineral Security Partnership Forum for EU-Kazakhstan cooperation in the CRMs area?- How can the MSP Forum support sustainability and diversification of the CRMs supply chains in EU-Kazakhstan trade relations?- Does the scaling up of Kazakhstan's CRMs production align with the EU's green and digital transition ambitions?

The expansion in the Indian steel manufacturing capacity comes at an opportune moment for the industry as the country has witnessed massive infrastructure projects like construction of national highways over the past few years. Now, with the general elections underway in the country and if the incumbent government comes back to power, the thrust on infrastructure would likely receive continued boost on account of policy continuity. Even though India has unseated Japan as the second largest producer of steel in the world over the past few years, steel production is quite a capital-intensive business, and a large chunk of production costs is driven by prices of raw materials. In such a scenario, the question arises if the Indian steel sector is comfortably placed in terms of having access to conventional and non-conventional raw materials going ahead. In this discussion, Anirudh Iyer, steel and raw materials is joined byKeith Tan, associate regional pricing director for Asia metals, Rohan Somwanshi, managing editor for global agriculture and metals news and Paul Barthomolew, lead analyst for metals and mining, to share their views on what lies ahead for the Indian steel sector.

Between the sheep in the field and the lovely yarn in your hands lies the complex network of the wool industry. Fiber must be scoured, spun, and maybe dyed, and it all starts with shearing. Attending a Fibershed symposium in 2012, Stephany Wilkes was surprised to learn that one of the barriers to local fiber production was a lack of trained shearers. A knitter and software developer, she had no hands-on livestock experience when she signed up for a shearing class through an extension center and found herself up to her elbows in wool. Despite the grueling labor and intensely specialized learning process, she relished the work and the way it pushed her squarely into the world of American fiber production. Ten years into her career as a sheep shearer and wool classer, Stephany has supported small flocks, a small mill, and her fibershed. Her 2018 book, Raw Material: Working Wool in the West, is a riveting chronicle of her immersion in the world of sheep and wool. As a shearing instructor and catalyst for transformation in the fiber community, she has made it her business to improve the conditions and the market for quality wool. Our desire to build and power more and more around portable electricity puts, and will put, even more pressure on technology, supply chains, and raw materials. How we generate? How we distribute? How we consume? These are going to be questions we need to ask ourselves.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
