Beginning at a young age, Brenden felt compelled to become an accountant in order to relieve his parents of their financial burden. Now he's the founder of MasterTalk where Brenden refers to himself as "a public speaker, communicator and facilitator." Brenden is the first in his family's lineage to complete higher education. My guest currently lives in Montreal Canada where he purchased a home for he and his mother in order to eliminate two mortgages. Culturally, as the first born, he had inherent responsibilities, including being very protective of his mother. Unfortunately his father, who passed away in 2019, was affected by alcoholism and made things challenging around the home. Both parents worked hard as factory workers, but just couldn't make ends meet. Brenden, who says, he was always good with numbers, studied accounting and got great jobs out of college and was eventually able to pay off all outstanding debt.Brenden admires and loves his mother tremendously. He says, "my mother has a very different life now than what she struggled through in the last ten years. Culturally, "you don't just walk away from your partner or family member who is struggling. You continue to support them and provide for them. My #1 priority was making sure everyone was safe," says Brenden.Sri Lanka, is an island country located in South-Central Asia, and Brenden shares stories of both his parents who grew up in Sri Lanka. His mother is the youngest of a large family and she loved to tend to the family garden. She married at 30 years old and immigrated to Canada. His mother taught her son many wonderful life lessons including his story that he shares about the $10 bill he found on the ground. Vijee hoped that her son understood that " even if we don't have a lot, we have a lot more than other people do and always be generous and lead with that generosity."After years of studying to be an accountant, then technology consultant, he was able to shift into doing what he really loved. He felt all of his steps in life where important. "That first step was absolutely necessary to get to the person I am today." Kumarasamy continues, " I got out of survival mode later in life and started to focus on the bigger picture of what I could do to serve the world"Brenden's Youtube channel is full of wonderful videos with professional advice for improving ones public speaking skills. He is self taught and wants everyone to understand that it wasn't easy in the beginning. He practiced hundreds of times before he felt he was ready. He was very fearful of launching that first Youtube video. Luke and his year were the first casualties of the ‘we're not hiring because of this virus' period, and things felt desolate. Around this time (Augustish 2020 I think?) his name started popping up a lot online, particularly on Linkedin. He was working aggressively on his portfolio but also building a network in a meaningful and thoughtful manner. It was all to do with adding value and contributing to the narrative, especially on other peoples posts. This was without spamming and going ‘look at my portfolio' in the process. He put his work out in an elegant manner and did so consistently, and in doing so, created intrigue. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with the ask, but don't expect people to respond if your first interaction is: "Hey bro" or dropping a ton of images in someone's inbox uncontextually (is this even a word?). The point is that you should add value first. Moving on: Lukes approach was a class act display on how to navigate a very trying time when you so desperately need to pry open the doors of employment. A very smart guy, obviously, Luke decided halfway through his course that it would make sense to pivot into motorcycles, given that the market is 'slightly' flooded with Car Design graduates. He took inspiration from some of the great motorcycle designers such as Pierre Terblanche and Adrian Morton, and changed lanes. Luke honed his skills in sketching 2 wheels and won a Royal Enfield competition around the time of finishing Uni. This and his thoughtful interactions online got the attention of many and he eventually landed a job with probably the most exciting EV bike startup in the UK, Arc Vehicles. Yet, as assets to every organization, IP rights, including trademarks, have financial and tax implications that are critical from a financial and business perspective, and cannot be dismissed or overridden by IP professionals. To address this topic, INTA released in May of this year a new report dedicated to tax implications across the trademark lifecycle in the European Union, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. A couple of months after the release of an OECD report on Global Anti-Base Erosion Model Rules covering the tax challenges arising from the digitalization of the economy, the INTA report is particularly timely and provides critical insights for IP owners and IP law practitioners alike. If you find it daunting to work your way through data, you are not alone. Data is a reality, both at work and home, but often people find it challenging to navigate through data to make an informed decision. Now more than ever, understanding data is a skill that all leaders need to use, manage and recognise what story the data is telling and make informed decisions based on that evidence. It's important to recognise that data-driven and data-informed are two different things. While the former focuses only on numbers and excludes the human side of the story, data-informed accounts for both the quantitative as well as qualitative information which provides a holistic picture. At the end of the day, data does not tell us what we need to do, it requires human touch to know what needs to be done. Like any storytelling, in data story-telling one needs to be passionate, confident and the story should sound interesting (WIIFM) so that it inspires people to want to take action. In addition, having visuals will drive the point home. The way you tell the data story should be able to change the perspective of people. In a world rich of data, if you are worried and wondering how to improve your data story-telling skills (as a beginner), relax and identify the insights. If the does not come easily observing someone who tells a very good data story can be a good starting point. Observe what stood out and how they made it sound interesting and then replicating those will likely help you be a better data story teller. Data is here to stay and expected to be stacked up in organisations, at least in the short/medium term. It is expected to grow exponentially but humans need to be able to make the final decision after evaluating its impact. That's decision-making process can never be replaced by technology. So put your fear of being redundant due to technology at rest. However, data storyteller expert Selena Fisk cautions that it is important to be not over-run by technology but be able to appreciate its utility and make your own decision. The common tendency of confirmation bias that we experience in our daily lives is yet another phenomenon that needs to be avoided and the importance of looking at the data afresh with new eyes cannot be emphasised enough. Today, Derek Harp is excited to be talking with Sean McGurk, the Executive Director of Global Cyber Security Operations at Las Vegas Sands Corp. Sean McGurk is a man of many talents! He has walked a long and interesting road with many different stops in the world of cybersecurity! He has served in various roles in the federal government, military, and private sector, focusing on information assurance and cybersecurity. He has more than 40 years of experience in advanced systems operation, cyber threat intelligence, and information systems security. Sean was born and raised in the greater Philadelphia area. He is a military veteran, sailor, scuba diver, speaker, brewmaster, cyclist, and author. In this episode of the (CS)²AI Podcast, he shares his modern-day superhero backstory and talks about his career path. He talks about what he learned about cybersecurity in the Navy, his transition from a career in the Navy to the civilian sector, mentorship, team management, and risk-taking. (3:20) In the Navy, Sean was a Fire Control Technician: Ballistic Missile. The technologies associated with operating within that environment jumpstarted his interest in the field of cyber-physical. (6:39) Throughout the inception of power control and nuclear engineering, the focus was primarily on safety. So it was one of the safest industries ever developed. (8:37) The complexities associated with the systems for preparing a missile for launch on a submerged submarine made an impression on Sean about the importance of cybersecurity. (10:33) Sean culminated his Navy career in one of the most senior enlisted positions- working directly for the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy. (11:26) Sean talks about his opportunity in the Navy to use technology in a reverse engineering process in the Soviet Union. (12:19) The things Sean considered and did when he transitioned from a career in the Navy to the civilian sector. (14:29) Sean got exposed to control systems cybersecurity after joining the Department of Homeland Security as the Director of Controls Systems Security Program in December of 2007. (16:31) Get out of your comfort zone and learn new ways to translate things and express them without using technical language if you get promoted to leadership management.
