Erin Routliffe and Belarusian partner Victoria Azarenka have been beaten in the first round of the doubles at the French Open by Italian Olympic champions Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, the second seeds.
Forestalling NCR's imminent quatercentenary ever so slightly, Ben and Tumaini turn on the microphone together for the first time in their shared Paris abode, just to wrap up some loose ends from Rome before our big French Open draw show later this week. Tumaini discusses the incredible superstar status of Jannik Sinner, who enraptured the public and put on some dominant performances en route to the final, where he was eventually stopped by Carlos Alcaraz. We also discuss Jasmine Paolini, as well as her mentor Sara Errani, whom we spoke with today at French Open qualifying as she wraps up a memorable singles career. Thank you for listening! Our Patreon is back up and running to ensure NCR keeps going and stays ad-free, and we hope you can join in supporting NCR! And we especially thank our GOAT backers: Pam Shriver and J. O'D. And please check out Ben's new writing home, Bounces! And Tumaini's work at The Guardian!
In this emergency, no-notes pod, Lucy and Eugene discuss Jasmine Paolini's magical run in Rome. The “Queen of Italy” secured her second WTA 1000 title in style, blitzing Coco Gauff in the final in front of a packed Campo Centrale. The Italian No 1, now back up to world No 4 in the singles ranking, also defended the doubles crown with Sara Errani. As well as giving Paolini her well-deserved props, we also give Gauff, the new world No 2, her flowers after making it to back-to-back WTA 1000 finals and share our thoughts on some of the other moments in Rome. Mikael Ymer is back! The Swede, playing for the first time since Wimbledon 2023, won on his return to action in an ITF event back in January and has played Davis Cup and a series of Challengers since. The WTA Tour is the gift that keeps on giving this year. The latest WTA 1000 winners Amanda Anisimova and Mirra Andreeva prove anyone can get it.
With week one of the 2025 Australian Open in the books, Lucy and Eugene go through all the action including No 3 seed Coco Gauff steamrolling through to the fourth round where Belinda Bencic awaits*. Listen out for who was pretty much spot on with their prediction for this match. Madison Keys, coming off the back of her title-run in Adelaide, has also looked very good in Melbourne. The newly-married American has made tweaks to her game, and her equipment, and it seems to be paying off. On the men's side, Ben Shelton and Auckland champion Gael Monfils face-off in round four in what should be a thriller! La Monf has played inspired tennis en route to week two and Shelton has looked more impressive in each round. Naomi Osaka had to retire in the third round due to abdominal trouble but the four-time Grand Slam champion picked up two good wins. Jasmine Paolini, who may be carrying an injury, fell to Elina Svitolina in round three but is still going strong in doubles with Sara Errani. So is Taylor Townsend with Katerina Siniakova and Asia Muhammad in mixed with Andres Molteni. *Episode was recorded before any fourth-round matches were played. ***Apologies in adance, this episode is explicit. Ben and Tumaini got a bunch more questions than fit into our previous episode, so, after an amazing musical prelude by Dan Bern, we answer the remainder of ones we got before recording in this separate episode. We discuss a wide range of topics: Billie Jean King's suggestion that tennis should simply the scoring terminology; padel; ranking points at Challengers; the unpopularity of two-week Masters 1000 events; if Iga Swiatek should play more doubles; unimpressive comments by Ben Shelton and Jon Wertheim; Sara Errani's Hall of Fame candidacy; and the progress toward a possible ATP-WTA merger. Retiring Donald Young and Taylor Townsend take the runners-up crown in mixed doubles after falling in straight sets to Italian third seeds Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. We appreciate Townsend acknowledging the significance of the presence of black players in the latter stages of the tournament during the trophy presentation. Frances Tiafoe's nerve got the better of him in a thrilling all-American semi-final against eventual runner-up Taylor Fritz. Big Foe was the better player for the majority of the match but he admirably admitted afterwards the occasion caught up with him towards the end of the match. We salute women's singles winner Aryna Sabalenka who beat Jessica Pegula in the final and Jannik Sinner who saw off Fritz in straights in the men's final. Listen out for post-match snippets from Young, Townsend and Tiafoe and to close we share our favourite fits, matches and moments from this year's Open and discuss whether Honey Deuce is actually better than Pimm's. Lucy and Eugene shout-out Arthur Fils, Alycia Parks and doubles pair Taylor Townsend and Asia Muhammad who all picked up titles since we were last on. We share our thoughts on the Olympics and the huge role tennis played in the opening ceremony – great to see Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal and Amelie Mauresmo represent and what a time for Team USA flag bearer Coco Gauff alongside LeBron James. Props to Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani who won women's doubles gold for Italy, Felix Auger-Aliassime who secured mixed doubles bronze with Gabriela Dabrowski for Canada – FAA also made it to the bronze-medal match in singles. American Swing is well and truly underway and Townsend is having herself a time in singles. Frances Tiafoe confirmed he is now working with David Witt, Naomi Osaka is back on familiar ground and continues to show good signs (admirably played Cincinnati qualifying). Keep commenting, liking, sharing and subscribing – we appreciate you all!
A fun, emotional and DRAMATIC week of Olympic tennis has finally come to an end! The US women's tennis team brought more drama off the court than on it - and they were giving big Jenny McCarthy vs. Tara Reid energy. Our Olympic tennis episode includes: The girls are fighting: Explaining the Danielle Collins vs Iga Swiatek beef, plus Emma Navarro and Coco Gauff's complaints. We don't want peace: Djokovic wins gold. Men's doubles breakdown, including the forgotten drama between Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz vs. Rajeev Ram at Davis Cup 2022. Read more about it here. Our favorite event: The mixed doubles delivered! We explain how to beat Sara Errani in doubles since it seems like the WTA players can't figure it out. Want more from us?

Coco Gauff picked up her first Grand Slam doubles title with first-time partner Katerina Siniakova. The new world No 2 also went deep in singles where she fell to eventual champion Swiatek in the semis. Naomi Osaka gave us the match of the tournament, and Swiatek the hardest of times, in the second round. We shout out Gloriana Nahum making history for Benin, American Tyra Caterina Grant and 15-year-old Moise Kouame who all impressed in juniors! On the men's side, Felix Auger-Aliassime made it to the second week, things got heated between Frances Tiafoe and Denis Shapovalov and we urge France to allow young talents Arthur Fils and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to cook! Keep commenting, liking, sharing and subscribing – we appreciate you all!
Lucy and Eugene give Jasmine Paolini her flowers after securing the doubles crown in Rome with Sara Errani. Naomi Osaka, or Clayomi (word to Shesaboutdone on X), picked up back-to-back wins against top-20 players, “world No 3” Coco Gauff reached the semis in singles and was runner-up in doubles with Erin Routliffe and Madison Keys backed up her Madrid last-four showing with a run to the quarters. Away from the main tour Arthur Fils picked up his second Challenger title in Bordeaux where he was the top seed and Elias Ymer reached the final in Oeiras. We also share our thoughts on the London-centric grass-court season in 2025, wish the retiring Dominic Thiem well, get into the French Open draw (super happy for qualifier Gabriel Diallo and proud of wildcard Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard who backed it for little sis while doing his thing in Lyon). And of course we reveal our picks for the men's and women's titles. Keep commenting, liking, sharing and subscribing – we appreciate you all!
The third seed ousts a home favorite with a glittering serving display, the bottom half of the women’s draw is more than half full of former slam champions, and Su-Wei Hsieh wins an upside-down match against Sara Errani.
Venus Williams showed such staggering resilience, toughness, and determination on Wednesday that it almost didn't matter that she won only one game. Andrew Eccles, founder of The Spin, joins to discuss Venus' loss to Sara Errani, what it showed us about her, and why he has such love for Errani. We also discuss Hsieh Su-wei's win over Bianca Andreescu, Stan Wawrinka's five-set flameout, and the unsettled vibe of this Australian Open.

It's midway through an unusual (and cold) French Open 2020, the third and final slam of the season (let that sink in). The guys struggle with the new crop of 'Who's that?' up and comers. Who's this Iga Swiatek getting off handling Halep-ae and our bestie Genie like that? More importantly, who's that snack with the Frenchiest of names (Hugo Gaston) handling his business and his nerve against Wawrinka and giving us the match of the tournament (thus far) against Dominic Thiem? Will these and other players breaking through continue their promise beyond the FO? The guys assess all the fresh faces and the quarterfinal match-ups, making their picks for eventual champion. They also bring analysis of all the drama that is week one... Serena withdraws, Vika flounders, Bertens cramps and gets wheeled off court, and Sara Errani mocks her opponents injury. And lest we forget the assessment of chair umpire vision challenges, as calls for permanent use of 'Hawk Eye' on clay grow following Shapo's second round injustice.

It was an eventful day at Roland Garros, with three-time champ Serena Williams withdrawing due to a lingering Achilles' injury, Victoria Azarenka and Coco Gauff also exiting, and Sara Errani and Kiki Bertens getting into all sorts of drama as their third set rocked (and then rolled). After bits from Serena, Errani, and Bertens, the main body of this episode focuses on two men who advanced on Wednesday: U.S. Open finalists Dominic Thiem and Sascha Zverev. Ben is joined by German reporter Jannik Schneider to discuss Zverev, his perception in Germany, his physical development, the impact of signing with Roger Federer's Team 8 company, and the legal battles that remain for him, as well as the similar legal battles around Dominic Thiem and his former manager. This was our 22nd(!) episode of the month of September! Golly. Thank you again for the incredible support for NCR we've received in recent weeks on the NCR Patreon!

Just when we thought the 2020 French Open couldn’t get any weirder, Day 4 began with a Sonic Boom over Paris as a fighter plane broke the sound barrier, and this was followed by Serena Williams withdrawing from the tournament with an Achilles injury. Elsewhere, we discuss Anna Karolina Schmiedlova's story after she beat Victoria Azarenka, the drama and fallout between Sara Errani and Kiki Bertens, impressive wins for Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka, and yet another five-setter for Alexander Zverev at a Grand Slam. Three weeks have passed since Wimbledon, two weeks since our last podcast, and a lot has happened.Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka won’t be in New York. David Law and Catherine Whitaker speculate about whether Roger Federer’s decision not to play again in 2016, followed by such spectacular 2017 results, might have influenced the length of lay-off taken by his two rivals.Former French Open finalist Sara Errani has tested positive for a banned substance and yet only been banned for two months. The podcast team discuss one of the more bizarre doping stories and verdicts. There’s discussion of the immensely open men’s and women’s draws heading into the US Open, and discussion about whether one of the American players might be able to take advantage. Particularly after Madison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe contested the first all-American women’s final not featuring one of the Williams sisters for 14 years. And could youngsters Alexander Zverev or Denis Shapavalov make major runs over the next few weeks? The team touch on two of the off-court stories that have come up since Wimbledon - the reports that Amazon are about to buy the UK rights to broadcast the ATP World Tour from 2019, and the vote to try to change from best-of-5 set singles matches to best-of-3 at the Davis Cup.After Maria Sharapova’s stuttering return hit yet another bump in the road because of injury, Catherine and David wonder whether her body will ever allow her to return to the level that she hopes to reach. And can Dan Evans come back after whatever ban he is given for testing positive for cocaine in June? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Courtney and Ben are in Charleston for the Family Circle Cup. In between meals and food comas they convene to break down the Miami Open finals. Is Novak Djokovic the Serena Williams of the ATP? Is Serena Williams the Novak Djokovic of the WTA? Do these comparisons even make sense? We don't know! We are so high on shrimp and grits we don't even know what we're saying! Ben is so out of it he saw flying fish! It's been quite a week so far. Ben and Courtney then turn the mic over to a few people you would much rather listen to: The Players. Why is Andrea Petkovic slapping herself? Who knew Sara Errani loved math! Doesn't Caroline Garcia sound like WTA Stan Wawrinka? And Eugenie Bouchard investigates an X-File while Madison Keys bids a sad adieu to hard courts. No claiming we misquoted you here, ladies! This is WTA unplugged. The episode closes with a few clips from Ben and Courtney's talk at the College of Charleston about the current media landscape, tennis media specifically, and that one time Courtney totally screwed up on Twitter. We are all about teachable moments, you guys!As always, thanks for liking us on Facebook, following us on Twitter, and subscribing/reviewing on iTunes or whatever your podcasting platform of choice may be! PS: Episode 100 drops next week. Get excited. So excited.
This year's French Open has come to an end, with a Chinese pair taking the women's double's crown. Top-ranked Peng Shuai and Hsieh Suwei from Taiwan earned their second Grand Slam title by defeating Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-4, 6-1 in the final. Speaking in an exclusive interview with CRI, Peng says she also hopes to improve on her singles play in the future. (bjh/soundbite 0609 Peng) "I will definitely keep working on my doubles play. In terms of singles play, I hope I could claim my own singles title sometime in the future. My goal is to reach world top 10. I think what really matters is trying my best. I hope I can advance in both doubles and singles play." In single's action, clay king Rafael Nadal downed Novak Djokovic in the men's singles final. The Spainard dropped the first set 3-6, but then went on to down the Slovak 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 to win his ninth French Open title. With the win, Nadal becomes the first person to win five French Open titles in a row. (bjh/soundbite 0609 Nadal) "The most important thing today is I won the most important tournament of the world in clay, probably the most important tournament of the year for me. I did a lot of times. I think was an emotional victory after what happened in Australia." Nadal is now tied with American Pete Sampras with 14 grand slam singles titles, just three shy of Roger Federer. ---- In the women's singles final on Saturday, Maria Sharapova survived a midway lapse to defend her French Open title with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 victory over 4th seeded Simona Halep. Sharapova has now won five Grand Slam titles, taking her to joint-11th on the all-time list alongside Martina Hingis.
In this special Rome final preview episode taped Saturday afternoon, Ben and Courtney look ahead to the upcoming tilt between Serena Williams and Sara Errani, as well as the week that was on the women's side at the Foro Italico. What do we make of Errani's unexpected emergence on home soil? Does she have a shot against Serena after the brutal loss in Paris last year? Also, our thoughts on the increasingly legit Ana Ivanovic, as well as the rest of the field that came and went through the Foro Italico. As always, thanks for liking us on Facebook, following us on Twitter, and subscribing and reviewing on iTunes! You, dear listeners, are the pasta twirled around the fork that is our hearts.
