POPULARITY
I was at the tabletop/board gaming convention Dice & Diversions this weekend, run by the same folks behind the Southern Fried Gaming Expo. The government ban on apps by Chinese-owned ByteDance included the popular mobile game Marvel Snap, which surprised its California based developers. The Nintendo Switch 2 was finally unveiled in a CG rendered trailer, with a full reveal occurring April 2nd. Gaming outlet Nintendo Life released a "Better eShop" after a week of development, and silenced many highly rated, award winning indie games in the process. Then we talk to Rob about the Better eShop and the name of the Nintendo Switch 2.
In this episode, the boys talk about Popstar Guitar and X Premium. We apologize.

Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.This time Tim's joining guest host Garreth Hirons for a festively-tinged chat about unlikely Christmas Hit and possibly the most mid-nineties artefact there is, the CD Single of Wonderwall by The Mike Flowers Pops. Along the way we'll be revisiting Andrew Collins' superhero origin story. averting the musical equivalent of Shovelware, and revealing why Lou Reed has never seen a chicken in any degree of proximity to a road but still finds the thought of it getting to the other side hilarious. You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/.You can also find Tim and Garreth chatting about I Was Born On Christmas Day by Saint Etienne Featuring Tim Burgess, Ferrero Prestige, Bod's Present, A Merry Jingle by The Greedies, Doctor Who: The Christmas Invasion by Jenny T. Colgan, Mariah Carey's rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman, Richard Herring's Christmas Emergency Questions, Iron Man 3 (which is a Christmas Film), Joe 90 Christmas Special The Unorthodox Shepherd and Merry Christmas Santa Claus (You're A Lovely Guy) by Max Headroom here.If you enjoy Looks Unfamiliar, you can help to support the show by buying us a coffee here. This week we had a viewer suggestion. Does the NES has a ton of Shovelware like the Nintendo Wii ? Maybe lots of you are wearing Rose Colored glasses and just enjoy a lot of the games on NES even though they are bad. Well me and @NESADDICT dive into it all on this episode of The Weekly Warp Pipe Podcast

November 19, 2006, also known as the day the Earth stood still, saw the release of S-tier console, the Nintendo Wii. Unbeknownst to most, the rise of the Nintendo Wii awoke an ancient sleeping monstrosity that had laid dormant in the games industry since the SNES era. That ancient monstrosity was a type of games called "Shovelware." For the uninitiated, shovelware is a term for games that were hastily developed to showcase quantity over quality. You probably rented at least one of these games accidentally from Giant Eagle, or were gifted one by an estranged family member for Christmas. Well today, we here at DT!HQ are going to turn shovelware games into AAA megahits! Kyle is here to talk about a racing game this week, but it's not the one you think. Andrew's answer will remind you of that weird time when we were all really into clay-mation. Matt is also here, and he's doing too much. Recommended reading: Flavor Text: Console Wars Debate This! Jared's at it again, trying to make Marcus question his sanity with some difficult quiz questions! This week, in honor of the Steam Deck's release, we read some of the descriptions from "shovelware" titles on the Steam store, just to see how ridiculous lesser-known titles on the platform can get. On this week's episode, we decided to expand on our favorite part of last week's episode. We take a look at the shovelware that was on the DS and discuss some of the games that stood out to us.
"Shovelware" is a term that had a spike in popularity for expressing the games seen during the Wii's time to shine. The more popular a console is, the more likely it will have a dumpster of shovelware made by cynical number-crunching developers. Let's get into this! Follow us on facebook.com/arrogantmedia

It's time for the GamesIndustry.biz Podcast, and this week James, Brendan, and Rebakah are on hand to discuss all the big news while still leaving plenty of room to reminisce about the GameCube. The industry is once again overflowing with complaints regarding toxic work environments, after former Razer employees accused CEO Min-Liang Tan of abusive behaviour. These allegations were joined by two court rulings which saw Quantic Dream pay a former employee €7,000 over an offensive photoshopped image, while Riot Games shelled out $10 million to former employees in gender a discrimination settlement. The Nintendo Switch is set to arrive in China tomorrow, around seven months after it was initially cleared for distribution by the Chinese government. Analysts predicted Nintendo was in for a rough ride this year following some optimistic sales projections. But far from the Switch losing steam, Nintendo has enjoyed a bumper 2019 thanks to its burgeoning (if a little troubled) mobile strategy, Detective Pikachu, and continued success of the Switch. Finally: Fewer, bigger, better -- the strategy many big game publishers talked about ten years ago, but where has the industry landed on this? Well, EA has gone from releasing 50 games in 2009 to just ten games this year. Publishers are releasing fewer games, but most of those which had the chop likely wouldn't stick out, as it's predominantly licensed and shovelware games, which have become increasingly expensive to make on console, finding a new home on mobile.
If you’re not Rank S+10, you will be able to climb to Rank X by going up a rank from Rank S+9. Also, every month, the SplatNet 2 app will display the Top 500 Rank X players for each one of the 4 Rules (Splat Zones, Tower Control, Rainmaker, Clam Blitz). The app will also show the Rank X players that uses a specific weapon a lot, so that players can see who are the best Rank X players using the same weapons as themselves. But that’s not all. Currently, more than 20 stages can appear in one of the 4 Ranked Battle Rules. While this allows for lots of variety in the stage rotation, it also makes it hard for a specific combination of stages and rules to go live at the same time. That’s why from Ver. 3.0.0 onwards, the stages for each rule will be selected from a pool of only 8 stages, making it much more likely for a given stage to appear in a given Rule. The pool of stages for each rule will be changed once a month, at the same time as the Rank X reset. Zen is happy to confirm that we will in fact release a patch to bring all Pinball FX3 content to 60 FPS in handheld mode on Nintendo Switch this summer. The time between now and then will be spent achieving 60 FPS in handheld mode and 1080p Full HD in docked mode for all 30+ tables in the library, plus testing and then publishing submissions to Nintendo. In the meantime, we still proudly stand by the current Switch iteration of Pinball FX3, which currently boasts a very respectable 83 Metacritic rating, and we will continue to release exceptional content in the months to come. However, is this a good reason not to start a game? There is no wrong way to play. We all have scars. But we hate price gouging content - and we don't want to support those games (e.g: Call of Duty and $15 map packs), especially if we're going for achievements; however, if you put 100s of hours into it, then it's worth it for you (Thanks Big El for the discussion point). Eric, Molly, Cory, and Alon go over what they've learned at E3 so far. Mostly, that there's nothing impressive at the show and that everything Ubisoft puts out looks the same. There's also concern that Nintendo has destroyed the dreams of the younger generation by allowing the Wii to suck too much.

This week we take a look into shovelware and wether or not publishers and developers should be supporting these D Grade titles. Unfortunatly Daniel could not be with us this week as he was attacked by Zombie’s on the way to the Hype Studio’s but he will be back fresh and healthy next week. Filling in for Daniel is game salesman, Ceri Hutton. He will be sharing his thoughts on the shovelware topic, and give us his review on a brand new addon to the Xbox Live Arcade, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a remake of the arcade and SNES classic.
