This episode of the podcast is a bit different... Instead of our usual, reverent look back at examples of the best in record sleeve creativity, we dig into its darkest and often unexplored corners of obscurity to expose some of the worst, or at best, most bizarre record sleeves ever created. This collection of more than 500 of 'the worst record sleeves' is part of a touring exhibition of the same name, which I visited a couple of times when it was on display in Birkenhead, Wirral, from November 2023 to January 2024. Whilst there, I spoke with the curator of the collection, Steve Goldman, along with Simon Robinson, the man behind a supporting book that showcases and expands upon the works on display. Emma Rice's passion for wine started, aged 19, with a taste of Krug 1979 from a double magnum, whilst working part-time at The White Horse Inn, Chilgrove. From there, her career has taken her from Oddbins to Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book, to Napa Valley – completing her degree in viticulture and oenology at Plumpton College along the way. After travelling to California and later Tasmania, Australia, Emma returned to the UK to set-up Custom Crush UK Ltd – a wine analysis laboratory and consultancy - through which she met owner and chairman of Hattingley Valley Wines, Simon Robinson, just as he had planted his vines. Today, Emma's role as Head Winemaker at Hattingley Valley is varied – she oversees the development of the vineyards, including producing Hattingley's signature wines, manages the growing winemaking team and, as a director of Hattingley Valley, is involved in running the business at board level.

Tax Tips from Simon Robinson, ATT (Fellow) FMAAT. 11.7 million returns due. 94% were filed online. Just over 700k filed on the 31st. 26.5K filed in the last hour. Last year, last filing was with 17 seconds to go! However just short of 1 million missed the deadline.Late filing penalties£100 late filing penalty. If still unfiled after three months (30 April 2020) then £10 per day up to £900. If still unfiled after 6 months, 5% of tax due or £300 if greater. Same again at 12 months. Latter penalties capped at 100% of tax due.Late payment penaltiesInterest accrues from day one (3.25%). If unpaid at 30 days, 5% of tax due. At six months, 5% of any tax outstanding. Ditto 12 months.Example: File and pay on 1 February 2021 (1 year and a day late). Liability £10,000. Interest and penalties would total £3,825.How to avoid thisSpeak to an adviser/accountant! Keep good records as you go, it is easier and aids budgeting. Aim to file as early as possible, no adverse effect on payment/amendment dates and gives more notice of any liability. If you are late, don’t panic. Aim to complete asap to limit penalties. Also consider making an estimated tax payment to limit interest and penalties in respect of late payment. You can appeal penalties if you have a reasonable excuse, but the acceptable list is limited (bereavement, hospital stay, HMRC technical issues).Common business expenses to make sure you claimUse of home as office - £4 per week with no evidence, more if properly calculatedMileage for business miles – 45 per mile for the first 10,000 miles, 25 thereafter. Where an individual works via a personal service company (PSC) and would otherwise be considered an employee. Rules in place since 2000 but notoriously hard to enforce.Previously if applied, the PSC was the deemed employer so any income was (broadly) taxed as if PAYE. This stopped the income tax efficient profit extraction profile of relatively low salary and dividends. From April 2020, the emphasis switches to the engaging party to operate the tests and decide whether the rules apply. If they do, payments are treated as employment income.Contract for a project or ongoing services? Paid by time or for a task? Mutual obligation?Right of control/substitution?Own tools/equipment?Multiple clients?Financial risk (work rejected and remedied at your cost)?Entrepreneurs and saving 10%If concerning Capital Gains Tax (CGT), need to make sure shares in company qualify (need to be a 5% holding and an officer/employee) or if assets in self-employed business check that their use qualifies and they are sold around the time the business ends/is sold.If general taxation, best advice is to get an adviser if they do not have one! Should easily be able to save you 10% in maximising expense claims and giving you back time to increase income.Topical tax tip would be to consider an electric car. For 2020/2021, there will be on benefit in kind (and therefore no income tax or class 1a NI) on providing an electric company car. The company can claim 100% of lease payment or purchase price and running costs against corporation tax. 1% and 2% rates confirmed for the following two years.Simon Robinson ATT (Fellow) FMAATsrobinson@lesliewardanddrew.co.uk www.lesliewardanddrew.co.ukSubscribe to Silver Fox Entrepreneurs podcast tohttp://www.silverfoxentrepreneurs.lifep.s. this is the first podcast I edited myself - so please forgive the bad edits and poor levels!

In this episode, Olly speaks with Simon Robinson about his social activism projects and their impact on his language learning. In Today's Episode: Simon Robinson is an English language teacher living in Okinawa, Japan. He's been involved in multiple social-change projects over the year and has witnessed how being part of a movement has had a huge impact on his Japanese. In this episode, we explore his various projects, how they've helped him with his languages, and also suggest ways for you to do the same. To connect with Simon, please visit: Twitter: http://twitter.com/tensaimon Blog: tensaimon.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSz-tNBL1tDs18BlUV5sVWA Here's an overview of the benefits of social activism in your language learning: It's learning by doing It's exciting and emotionally involving (even more so than stories!) - perfect for effective retention of new vocabulary etc It covers all skills (reading listening writing speaking) as well as translation/interpreting (if that's what you like) - for example it can be fantastic for speaking skills - you will be having emotionally-engaging high-level communication pretty much every time you participate (daily, if you get very involved!) A learner can choose how to participate, focusing on the activities/skills they feel drawn to - if you like translation you can do it, or if you prefer to ditch your L1 and go full-on immersion you can do that too! It's completely free It can take up a lot of time if you want it to - perfect if you are serious about developing your skills via an immersion approach You can do it from anywhere - most organisation takes place over the internet (You don't even have to participate in your country of residence - live in japan but want to participate in the UK? No problem!) Most projects are desperate for as many willing volunteers as they can get - if you want to participate you will be welcomed with open arms! As real work in real projects it will be fantastic work experience, which will be invaluable on your CV It may even lead to paid work (many projects do have paid positions) tho I should add that it would be unwise to count on this: the vast majority of participants in projects are voluntary. Last but not least....as a by-product of your language learning you will be helping to make the world a better place! Start Speaking Today: I’d like to thank italki for supporting the show. British wine use to have a reputation, but not one we wanted. Now it's taking on the French at their own game with some of the best sparkling in the world. As chair of Wine GB Simon is the perfect guest to chat to to find out why and how. If you’d said to Simon Robinson in 2008 that his Hattingley Valley vineyards would have the capacity – in a really good year – to produce 580,000 bottles of wine…or that his sparkling rose would be crowned a world champion, he would have said you were crackers. And yet, in just over a decade, Hattingley and other GB newcomers have done brilliantly in what is a very old industry…even though in the early days our efforts were written off as being poor copies of German varieties like Riesling and Muller-Thergau. In this conversation you’ll discover why our sparkling wines are now doing so well and why Simon calls his sector ‘agriculture on steroids’: it will make your eyes water when you do and you’ll wonder why on earth he gave up his partner position at a city law firm to go on such a rollercoaster...
