A Special Thanksgiving Episode: Creativity, Community, and Gratitude In this special Thanksgiving episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast, hosts Cyndi Burnett and Matthew Worwood visit Dedham, Massachusetts, just outside Boston, to record live from the newly opened TLC Studios. TLC, short for Teaching, Learning, and Creativity, is the inspired creation of authors and educators Peter and Paul Reynolds, along with their sister Jane. This episode is a celebration of creative learning, featuring guest Donna Luther, a Montessori school principal, and highlighting the exciting Big Noise Summit. Together, the group reflects on the importance of gathering in person to discuss how creative learning spaces can transform education. They emphasize the power of community and the innovative approaches that reimagine what classrooms can be. Peter and Paul Reynolds share the vision behind TLC Studios: a vibrant, flexible space designed to spark collaboration and creativity. Unlike traditional classrooms, TLC Studios features modular, interactive areas filled with color and possibility. The conversation also highlights the crucial role parents play in fostering creativity and encourages educators to build strong connections with their communities. The episode ends on a high note—literally—with a symbolic “big noise,” representing the collective energy and commitment to spreading creativity in education. This week's conversation is with - according to their website - artist, author, aunt, and alliterator Anne Appert. And yes I had to re-record all those a-words a bunch of times to get this right. Anne's the author-illustrator of Blob, a book with which I hope you're familiar, which champions individual self-expression, even if it doesn't mean adhering to strict labels other than "I'm me." Their follow-up book comes in winter 2024 and is titled 'What If You Wish,' and really takes a hard look at that central, childlike question, exploring in a gentle way what it means to consider possibilities. There's a cautionary tale in here about leaving your work up on Instagram, but at least in Anne's case that turned out wonderfully. If you haven't before, visit Anne's website at anneappert.com and in particular, head over to their Ko-Fi (or coffee, however you say it) shop for some incredible sticker packs and prints that I've picked up, myself. Josh is here, Brenna is here, and Jon is here! And our Linktree is here (please subscribe!). (PS, listen to the first few minutes of our conversation, pause, and then check out the Sparkle Suit!) ------ Our reviews this week: I Just Ate My Friend by Heidi McKinnon I Am Me: A Book Of Authenticity by Susan Verde, illustrated by Peter H. Number one New York Times bestselling author and children's yoga and mindfulness expert Susan Verde knows the power of positive self-talk. For decades, Verde has struggled with her inner critic, a voice inside telling her that she was not enough. Yoga, meditation, and mindfulness practices became her way of challenging and quieting this voice. However, the moment she became a parent, the voice became louder than ever. How would she manage to parent three little ones when she could not speak to herself with compassion, kindness, and love? Motherhood would prove to be the ultimate test of her practice.Woven throughout the book are mantras reminding readers to speak to themselves with compassion, with the ultimate goal of living, loving, and parenting from a place of freedom and authenticity. Verde's message is that we must all be the authors of our own inner dictionaries, filling them with words of self-love. We must listen to the voice that is telling us that we are worthy. And we must let these words become our story.Connect with Susan here---When it comes to your dream, just go for it and CANNONBALL with CONFIDENCE!Make sure to listen to the entire episode to receive inspo and tips!Thank you for listening! If you enjoyed this episode, take a screenshot of the episode to post in your stories and tag me on Instagram. NY Times bestselling author and mindfulness expert, Susan Verde, has wrestled with this struggle for decades. Yoga, meditation, and mindfulness practices became her way of challenging and quieting her internal faultfinder as she experienced loss, divorce, and parenthood. Now she shares a collection of original essays that emphasize the power of positive self-talk. With humor, heart, and disarming vulnerability, she reveals her missteps and her greatest moments of joy. She writes books for readers of all ages, including the #1 NY Times bestselling I AM series, and teaches kids yoga and social-emotional awareness.Kathryn also interviews Author Colin Campbell. When Colin Campbell's two teenage children were killed by a drunk driver, he was thrown headlong into a grief so deep he felt he might lose his mind. He found much of the common wisdom about coping with loss—including the ideas that grieving is a private and mysterious process and that the pain is so great that “there are no words”—to be unhelpful. Drawing on what he learned from his own journey, Campbell offers an alternative path for processing pain that is active and vocal and truly honors loved ones lost. Full of practical advice on how to survive in the aftermath of loss, he shows readers how to actively reach out to their community, perform mourning rituals, and find ways to express their grief, so they can live more fully while also holding their loved ones close. He is a writer and director for theater and film. The short film he wrote and directed with his beautiful and talented wife, Seraglio, was nominated for an Academy Award.

Sunni and Lisa are joined by Susan Verde who talks about her latest book,  I Am Courage: A Book of Resilience (I Am Books).Susan grew up in the heart of Greenwich Village in NYC. As a kid she kept a piece of chalk in her pocket (for spontaneous hopscotch) and her skate key around her neck, ready for the next adventure. She found inspiration everywhere and loved to write all about it! Now, Susan lives by the sea in East Hampton, New York with her 3 children, their dog, Gizmo and a menagerie of other creatures. Here, she writes books for children of all ages and teaches kids yoga and mindfulness. She is a yogi herself and is still working on her headstand. Her best-selling, award-winning stories range from explorations of music, art and museum visits to the concepts of serendipitous friendships, environmental issues, empathy and humanity with an emphasis on yoga and mindfulness.   Susan's stories celebrate the unique voices and experiences of kids and inspire adults to let their own inner child out…maybe for a spontaneous game of hopscotch every now and then. Susan's books have been translated into multiple languages. Susan loves to bring her knowledge of writing, yoga, and mindfulness to schools, libraries and yoga studios. She is also available to keynote events and offers workshops for educators, parents and aspiring writers.Susan is a frequent contributor to MindBodyGreen, YogaDigest, and other online magazines and has appeared on multiple podcasts (livehappy and KidLitTv) speaking about writing, parenting, mindfulness, and yoga.   Book Description:Encourage kids to find their inner strength with this companion to the New York Times bestsellers I Am Human and I Am Love!I move ahead one breath at a time.I act with bravery.I am courage. When we picture someone brave, we might think they're fearless; but real courage comes from feeling scared and facing what challenges us anyway. When our minds tell us “I can't,” we can look inside ourselves and find the strength to say, “Yes, I CAN!”From the New York Times bestselling team behind the I Am series comes a triumphant celebration of everyday courage: believing in ourselves, speaking out, trying new things, asking for help, and getting back up no matter how many times we may fall. Grounded in mindfulness and awareness, I Am Courage is an empowering reminder that we can conquer anything.Inside, you'll also find exercises to inspire confidence.

A fairy tale to help you fall asleep! (illustrated by Jay Fleck). Fun fact: Susan and Shanda happen to have the same literary agent! Let’s get to it! … Questions we asked Susan:   To start, tell us about your new book and how you came up with the topic of sleep for this one? Ok Susan, can you give us an overview of what you typically do during a school visit and what about it is uniquely you? Similar to Bonnie, many of your books fall in the social emotional learning (SEL) category which is a hot topic these days! What’s your SEL philosophy when presenting to kid readers? Has your visit schedule been pretty busy this year in light of the pandemic? Did you offer virtual visits? How did that go for you? Has a student ever brought up something uncomfortable? How did you / would you handle that? As an educator, mother, and school presenter, what do you see as the biggest SEL need/gap right now? Any thoughts on how to bridge that gap? Did I just imagine this or did you once tell me you used to be a kindergarten teacher?! How has that experience affected you as a presenter? Do you consider yourself more of an introvert or an extrovert? How does that play into your visits? How many school visits do you typically like to do a year? Before we wrap up, do you have any last tips for our listeners (authors, educators) about school visits or SEL? We had the pleasure of interviewing Roger Day over Zoom video! Now more than ever, kids need to find the power to deal with life’s challenges. We may all be looking for a super hero to save the day, but Roger Day (www.rogerday.com) reminds us that our true power lies within. Day, the (normally) nationally touring and multiple award-winning Nashville-based singer-songwriter, recently released an album to help youngsters “solve the problem” and “save the day” using their own imagination and skills – no imaginary super heroes needed. Featuring 10 original songs, Invincible! is available from RogerDay.com, Spotify and your favorite music store. From the rousing beat of the title track, we know we’ll be ready to fend off any evil foes. “No need to wait for super heroes anymore. I can save the day through the turning of the page.” As Roger says, “every puzzle is solve-able” through creative brainpower and by consulting “the pages of a book.” Any kid can discover that they are capable of working through a problem, like “No Ordinary Super Hero.” They may even find them-selves declaring to their parents: “I’ll Be Your Super Hero” as they soar confidently in their cape and boots. Day explains the unbridled optimism of these songs and how they fit the times. “Life is full of problems. The trick is to open your mind to discover the answers. Humans are clever, and little humans are all too often underestimated. We can help kids recognize that they can be active in finding solutions even in the most difficult situations.”New York Times best-selling author Susan Verde co-wrote the rocker “Big Picture” with Day, in which a “citizen scientist” questions, investigates, solves for “x” and looks around to discover the universe, which starts in one’s own backyard. The rockin’ beat continues with the advice to super heroes to “Get a Robot First” and the shifting perspectives of “Little Ants,” and the rousing “Me and My Jet Pack,” which has been a hit with the kids at Roger’s concerts. Of course, not all heroes fly around in capes and fight bad guys. “The Everyday Super Hero Song” celebrates the ordinary people who keep us educated, safe and healthy. The album ends sweetly with the soft-rock, Beatles-inflected ballad “Love Is My Super Power,” in which the whole world can “shine like new.” Roger Day is based near Nashville. His appearances have included the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor NY, The Charlotte Chil-dren’s Theater and many schools, libraries and festivals. Roger Day’s songs have been featured on Radio Disney, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and public television. His five studio albums – Rock ‘n’ Roll Rodeo, Ready To Fly, Dream Big!,Why Does Gray Matter? and the CD/DVD release, Marsh Mud Madness– along with two Greatest Hits albums – have all won Parents’ Choice Awards and critical acclaim nationwide. During spring 2020, he launched a virtual “Dream Big” and “Virtual Zoo” concert series, draw-ing thousands of fans. Roger and his wife Jodie are proud of their three adult kids who are super heroes to them: Thomas, a soon-to-be pediatrician at Vanderbilt University Medical School (who co-wrote the track “I’ll Be Your Super Hero”); Marjory, currently completing two masters in both Business and Engineering at the University of Tennessee; and Jacob, a rising college senior at W&L University who spent last summer in Argentina mastering his Spanish and playing lots of soccer while working with kids at a non-profit in Buenos Aires. Now, as Roger releases a new album called Invincible! and reflects on his role as a children’s entertainer, educator and father, he is even more convinced of the power of music in young people’s lives. “My favorite line on the entire album is “Life is full of problems. But it’s full of answers too.” That’s a message I’d love for every kid to take to heart.”We want to hear from you! Lynda Dell is a Certified Early Childhood Educator who is writing a blog to support parents called "Resilient Families Thrive" (link below). Joining Lynda is Karen DeHaven. As a professional counselor and licensed dance/movement psychotherapist, Karen works with children, families and women who are ready to creatively work through emotional and behavioral challenges. She specializes in working with children, family, and women who are experiencing struggle. Lynda says that moms need to give love to themselves and recharge their batteries so they can “fill their cup” and be available for their children. Karen suggests that mom and dad look inward to see how they are feeling so they can “take their own temperature” before addressing their children’s needs. If not, it is a set up for conflict and agony in the home. She has some strategies to use with parents so they can regulate and properly respond to their children to help answer their questions since there will be a lot of uncertainty. Getting children to self-regulate is great too. Practicing strategies with them are important to do so when everything is going well so they can use the strategies when chaos ensues. Lynda discusses the importance of modeling these strategies for your children to help them through the anxiety they are feeling. Behavior is a “cry out” for something that is happening with children, so Karen is working on a booked called “COVID DAYS 911” to help parents deal with the anxiety their children are experiencing. “I am human I am a work in progress Striving to be the best version of ME” Susan Verde wrote the picture books: I Am Yoga, I Am Peace and I Am Human in her wellness series. I Am Human is a hopeful meditation on all the great (and challenging) parts of being human, it shows that it's okay to make mistakes while also emphasizing the power of good choices by offering a kind word or smile or by saying “I'm sorry.” At its heart, this picture book is a celebration of empathy and compassion that lifts up the flawed fullness of humanity and encourages children and (adults) to see themselves as part of one big imperfect family—millions strong. Valeria Teles interviews Susan Verde. Susan is a New York Times bestselling author. She grew up in the heart of Greenwich Village in New York City. Ultimately, she moved to the Hamptons where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's in reading remediation and become an elementary school teacher for many years. In the 14th episode of Wreck Your Perfection, I had the honor of speaking with New York Times bestselling children’s book author Susan Verde. Susan grew up in the heart of Greenwich Village in NYC, and she currently lives by the sea in East Hampton, New York with her 3 children and their dog, Gizmo. In addition to writing books for kids she also teaches yoga and mindfulness to children of all ages. Her award-winning stories ranging from museum visits and yoga to lifelong friendships and hope celebrate the unique voices and experiences of kids and inspire adults to let their own inner child out…maybe for a spontaneous game of hopscotch every now and then. Susan’s books have been translated into multiple languages. I thought this conversation was perfect for a Valentine’s Day episode, because the common thread throughout is really about being with and loving ourselves through all the ups and downs of our human experience, and knowing we’re ok, we’re enough. Check out Susan's 'I Am' series, as well as her other beautifully written children's books on her website, and follow her on insta @susanverde. Hosting a podcast is a part-time (unpaid) job and if you would like to support the podcast through a monthly donation, you can do so for as little as $5/month through Anchor. 10% of all donations go to World Food Programme, towards their Zero Hunger goal by 2030. Fun fact, it only costs 50 cents to provide a day's worth of meals! I also just launched the Kickstarter campaign for my first solo EP 'Taking Back Me', and would HUGELY appreciate a couple dollars or just sharing the project with a fellow music-lover! If you have any feedback about the show, DM me on instagram @wreckyourperfection. I love hearing from you, whether it's something that inspired you or something you want to hear on the show. Susan Verde (@susanverde) shares I AM HUMAN: A BOOK OF EMPATHY, which is illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds. I AM HUMAN carries with it an important yet all-too-overlooked truth: that you are flawed, but that does not make you bad. Susan reminds us all in this conversation that being seen is so important. I AM HUMAN is the third book in a series that includes I AM YOGA and I AM PEACE. If you have not yet discovered this series, I think they’ll make you see your classroom, your children, or your readers, and maybe even yourself in a whole new way. The actual 'doing' requires following through on the dream, but the dream is the rough sketch.
