Faith Driven Entrepreneur
Episode 388 - From Super Bowl Champ to Broken and Rebuilt | Trent Dilfer

Faith Driven Entrepreneur

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 18, 2026 42:38

From the Locker Room to the Boardroom: Trent Dilfer on NIL, Institutional Failure, and the Peace That Held Him Together Key Topics: •          The NIL earthquake — how a $471-a-month scholarship check gave way to a multi-million-dollar collision between money and college sports almost overnight •          Why Trent believes the “quick-fix” entrepreneur mindset is a spiritual dead end, even when it pays •          The coming clash between private equity and institutional leadership in college athletics •          How Tim Tebow's boldness opened the door for a new generation of athletes to talk openly about faith •          The hardest story Trent has ever told: losing his five-year-old son, and the peace that “transcends understanding” that carried his family through it Notable Quotes: “I think you could be spiritually bankrupt if you go chase the gold and forget about the soul.” — Trent Dilfer “I have a peace that transcends understanding. I am not my own.” — Trent Dilfer “Our God is a master of brokenness. He is the healer of the broken.” — Trent Dilfer Description: Trent Dilfer has seen the collision of money and college sports from every angle: as a Super Bowl-winning quarterback who earned $471 a month on scholarship, as a head coach at UAB who watched NIL rewrite the rules six weeks into his first season, and as a broadcaster who now studies the institutions trying to keep up. On this episode of Faith Driven Entrepreneur, Trent joins host Justin Forman for a wide-ranging conversation about what happens when entrepreneurial disruption crashes into institutions that were never built to move fast — and why he believes chasing money without character is its own kind of bankruptcy. The conversation moves from the mechanics of NIL and the coming wave of private equity in college athletics, to the deeper story of how faith became a normal, bold part of the conversation in locker rooms — tracing a line from Tom Landry and Reggie White through the Tim Tebow era to today's young quarterbacks. Then Trent shares the hardest chapter of his own story: the loss of his five-year-old son, and the supernatural peace that met him in the middle of it. It's a raw, honest picture of what it looks like to trust God when nothing about the outcome makes sense — and why Trent says brokenness, not polish, is where most people actually meet Jesus.

Some coaches collect plays. Coach Shawn Cooley collects ways to run the same one.In his third visit to the Board Drill, the East Ridge offensive coordinator makes the case that you do not need a thick call sheet to be multiple. You need one play your kids believe in and a hundred ways to show it. For Cooley, that play is counter, and over the course of the episode he takes GH counter from its plainest form all the way out to the edges of what a defense will let you get away with.Along the way he gets into GT and split-flow counter, a first-level slice RPO he calls emo, counter quick borrowed off the college game, and a long-trap ISO wrinkle he is half convinced should have gotten him fired. From there it turns into a quarterback run clinic: a center-turned-quarterback lowering his shoulder between the tackles, jet and empty-formation keeps, a guard-tailback counter, and a shovel pass he simply calls Tebow. The thread running through all of it is the part most offenses skip. The offensive line barely changes a rule, and the defense never gets to tee off on your base.If you run gap scheme, this is an hour well spent with the whiteboard open. This is a public episode. As America marks its 250th anniversary, there's no better time to ask: what has kept this nation standing? Elizabeth Carlyle's answer is simple — prayer.   Elizabeth learned that at age eleven, when her father suffered a heart attack and was rushed away in an ambulance. She rode her bike to the end of the street, watched it go by, and prayed. He survived. And fifty years later, she still prays every time she hears a siren. That moment became the foundation of a life built on the belief that prayer isn't a last resort — it's the first and most powerful thing you can do.   Elizabeth is an author, attorney, and Bible study teacher, and the CEO of First Freedom Art Company — the stewards of Arnold Freeberg's famous painting of George Washington, Prayer at Valley Forge. It's also the cover of her book Americans Who Pray: Uniting a Nation in Faith and Freedom, released in honor of America's 250th anniversary.    In this conversation, she shares the stories behind gathering prayers from founding fathers, presidents, and current leaders — including Ben Carson, Tim Tebow, and June Hunt — and what she learned about prayer along the way.   This is an encouraging conversation on the importance of prayer in the Christian life and in the history of our country as we celebrate America's 250th anniversary.   Subscribe to the podcast and tune in each week as Haley and Dustin share with you what the Bible says about real-life issues with compassion, warmth, and wit.   So you have every reason for hope, for every challenge in life. It is one of the most recognizable verses in all of Scripture. Christians have memorized it for generations, and it has found its way into popular culture. Your grandmother needlepointed it on a pillow. Your niece posted it on Instagram. Tebow put it on his eye black. Philippians 4:13 is everywhere. Because it is so familiar, we often feel like we know exactly what it means. Many read it as a promise that God will help us accomplish whatever goal we set our minds to—we'll win the game, get the promotion, or overcome any obstacle standing in our way.  Although we know this verse by heart, many of us struggle to live it. When life becomes difficult, when our plans fall apart, when we face disappointment, loss, uncertainty, or suffering, we often discover that our strength isn't enough. We become anxious, discouraged, or exhausted because we've unknowingly emphasized what we can do instead of the One who gives us strength. In this sermon, Matt unpacks Paul's injunction to “Rejoice.” We've seen how a robust prayer life and an intentional thought life can yield rejoicing; now, we turn to our actions. What we do can lead us to a life of rejoicing. But could Paul possibly be right? Can we really do ALL things!?

Three San Francisco Giants pitchers wrote Genesis 9 — God's covenant sign of the rainbow — on their caps during Pride Night, and the backlash has been swift. Paul Batura, VP of Communications for Focus on the Family, joins Brian From to unpack the controversy and the bigger question underneath it: is it appropriate for Christian athletes to publicly profess their faith? Paul traces a long line of precedent, from Billy Sunday to Eric Liddell to Tim Tebow, and makes the case that one player's courage tends to be contagious. He's not surprised by the intensity of the backlash, but he also senses fans and even corporations growing less afraid to push back against pressure to fall in line. The conversation extends beyond sports to everyday workplaces — how do you discern when and how to share your faith at the office without being obnoxious about it? And with the World Cup drawing tens of millions of viewers worldwide, Paul and Brian discuss how moments of public prayer by athletes can plant seeds even among people who'd otherwise never think about faith. Paul's prediction: this conversation isn't going away, and Christians are well-positioned to engage it thoughtfully. In this powerful conversation, Dr. Zach Clinton welcomes Tim Tebow to discuss identity, intimacy with Christ, and living a life marked by lasting impact. While many know Tim first as a Heisman Trophy winner, national champion, and NFL quarterback, his greatest mission has always extended far beyond football. From serving the “Most Vulnerable People” through the Tim Tebow Foundation to stepping into fatherhood with his wife Demi-Leigh and their daughter Daphne, Tim shares how identity, calling, and purpose have taken on even greater meaning in this season of life. At the center of this conversation is Tim’s new book, If the Tree Could Speak, a creative retelling of the crucifixion inspired by Luke 19:40. Through the perspective of the cross itself, Tim invites listeners to slow down and truly see the love displayed at Calvary—not as distant history, but as a deeply personal rescue mission. Together, Tim and Zach explore: Living with urgency without anxiety Leading with conviction anchored in love Seeing and valuing the people the world often overlooks Finding identity rooted in Christ instead of achievement The transforming power of the cross If you’ve ever felt unseen, dismissed, or forgotten, this episode is a reminder that the greatest declaration of love in history was completed for you.
