For the 50th Episode of the Microcollege Podcast, we checked back in with one of our favorite guests from the first few months of the show. Lene Rachel Andersen is one of the stimulating and ambitious thinkers we have met during this remarkable journey. A native of Denmark, Lene is an economist, futurist, Bildung activist, and author of many books in Danish and English. The occasion for this conversation is the upcoming release of a significantly revised new edition of Lene's landmark book The Nordic Secret: A European Story of Beauty and Freedom. Originally published in 2017 with the collaboration of Swedish author Tomas Björkman, the new edition of The Nordic Secret will be available in late January 2024. Lene will be traveling to the West and East Coasts of the US in January and February as well, with plans for a visit to the Midwest (including Thoreau College) in late summer or early fall in the works as well. The Nordic Secret is an important text for anyone seeking hopeful inspiration and practical advice about what could be done with regards to the collapse of civic engagement, social cohesion, and personal sense of meaning in our time in the United States and elsewhere. The book tells the remarkable story of how Denmark and the other Nordic countries made the transition from being among the poorest, most socially stratified, and authoritarian countries in Europe in the early 19th century to being the most wealthy, egalitarian, and democratic counties in the early 20th century. The "secret" in Lene's title turns out to be a revolutionary new model of education for young adults - the Danish folk high schools - grounded in a deeply humanistic conception of the human being and of human development. Lene labels this conception "Bildung," a term with deep roots in the thought and practice of key early modern German thinkers including Herder, Goethe, and Schiller, who in turn inspired the creators of the folk high school movement in Denmark (and also the Transcendentalists in America, including Emerson and Thoreau).Testing the hypothesis that what worked in Scandinavia may work elsewhere, Lene has spent the last several years working to instigate and support a global Bildung movement. In addition to her writing and speaking, Lene is the co-founder of the Global Bildung Network, a worldwide network of educators, thinkers, and activists collaborating online and in person to share ideas and promote the idea of Bildung in ways appropriate to diverse cultures and contexts. The Global Bildung Network organizes twice-yearly virtual "Global Bildung Days" on the March and September equinoxes, as well as regional gatherings in Europe and now in North America. He holds a BA in religious studies from the University of Vermont and a master's in religion and art from Yale University. He is the author of the 7-volume Metamodern Spirituality Series and, most recently, Metamodernism: Or, The Cultural Logic of Cultural Logics. His primary interests include theorizing developments in culture after postmodernism, productively bridging the divide between science and spirituality, and developing sustainable systems for life to flourish. All of these lead through the paradigms of emergence and complexity, which inform all of his work. Tomas Björkman is an entrepreneur and financier, and has over the past 25 years built innovative international companies in the areas of banking and real estate. His entrepreneurship combined with a keen interest in both society and science led to the creation of the the Ekskäret Foundation in 2008. Tomas himself describes in the forewords of the book ‘Changing the world we create' why he started and is still very involved in foundation: “In my twenties, I had the choice between an academic career in theoretical physics or the world of commerce. I chose the latter and spent twenty-five years in business. Eventually, I sold my company to one of Switzerland's larger banks continuing for a time to serve on its board. But the call of the world of ideas was irresistible. My background in theoretical physics and as an entrepreneur in information technology, investment banking and property development had allowed me to learn about and view our existence from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. My personal drive increasingly became to unlock the hidden structures of the world around me. I sought to bridge many academic fields including cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology and sociology. I started searching for connections that form the evolving whole. This curiosity led me to spend a decade researching and writing “The World We Create”. I also established the Ekskäret Foundation to facilitate the co-creation of a more conscious society. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcast-c709ee4/message

Dit keer bespreken we het boek The Nordic Secret van Lene Rachel Andersen en Tomas Björkman. Met de subtitel: 'A European story of beauty and freedom.' Het boek is opgedeeld in vijf delen: I - Setting the scene II Personal freedom and responsibility - bildung philosophy III The Scandinavian Spring - implementing Bildung IV Exploring what we have found V Looking forward I Setting the scene In het eerste hoofdstuk zien we, op basis van verschillende langlopende onderzoeken, hoe goed de scandinavische landen het doen op economisch en sociaal gebied.

What is needed for people, communities and societies to transform? Where can we meet other people and build trust and understanding together? How can we create inner transformation? How can we create a mindset where we can change the world? Worldwide known author, speaker and activist Tomas Björkman leads The Eksäret Foundation. Tomas Björkman explains the need for collective shift for us all as a global society: “From a historical and material perspective, the majority of humanity is no doubt doing better than ever; but at what cost? We live in an unfolding and ever more urgent climate crisis. And our polarised societies seem guided by ineffectual leadership. My take on the world is that it is no longer enough to simply “solve problems”. The complexity and inter-relationship between problems mean that all our challenges have elements relating to human thought and emotion. We have to re-orientate by better learning how to evolve and adapt. I use the phrase “we have to”, because we are at what physists term a bifurcation point. Our civilisation will either go forward at a higher level of more complex organisation, or break down. In short: we need to shift our minds and our hearts on a grand collective scale. We need new, deeper ways of relating to ourselves, to each other and to the world. We also need “new maps” of our very existence as the current ones are both antiquated and increasingly revealed as inaccurate. The good news is that humanity has undergone major collective shifts before! My work is dedicated to contributing to increasing our chances of doing that again, while there is (still!) time.” -- The Ekskäret Foundation is a Swedish non-profit organisation which aims to facilitate the co-creation of a more conscious and sustainable society. The Foundation was founded in 2009 with a focus on the connection between life-long personal inner development and growth and societal development. It has developed spaces, arenas and contexts for inquisitive exploratory meetings, dialogue and lifelong transformative learning. Starting with youth camps the Foundation offers workshops, programs, conferences and work labs in personal development and social transformation. All with the purpose to increase our individual and collective capacities to be active co-creators of a more sustainable and conscious society. Ep. 36 | Philosopher, author, and social entrepreneur Tomas Björkman's claims are convincing: our culture needs to go through a new developmental paradigm shift. Either it will grow more complex—or crumble, as empires have crumbled in the past. The collective worldview needs to change, and to that end Tomas' focus is on the relationship between growing our personal psychological maturity and societal change, a relationship Nordic countries recognized to their great advantage towards the end of the nineteenth century. Extrapolating from his vast experience with business leadership, where inner psychological maturity turns out to be a foremost aspect of success, Tomas extends this knowledge, applying it to all of society, and emphasizes the importance of supporting a lifelong inner process of development for every individual. The only hope for our shared future seems to lie in wiser decision making by individuals who have expanded both mind and heart to encompass the greater complexities of our time. Recorded on December 2019, with Dr. Roger Walsh, John Dupuy, and Douglas Prater. “Conscious effort on large-scale consciousness development actually worked.” (For Apple Podcast users, https://deeptransformation.io/tomas-bjorkman-cultivating-psychological-maturity-race-between-maturity-and-catastrophe/ (click here to view the complete show notes on the episode page.)) Timotheus Vermeulen talks with Brendan Graham Dempsey about the development of "metamodernism," a paradigm for understanding art and culture after postmodernism. After discussing the original impetus for and formation of the idea, he reflects on the continued relevance of the paradigm today, more than a decade after he and colleague Robin van den Akker first proposed it in their seminal 2010 article, "Notes on Metamodernism." More recent applications and deployments of the term "metamodernism" outside cultural studies proper (e.g., by Hanzi Freinacht, Lene Rachel Andersen, Tomas Björkman, Jonathan Rowson and Layman Pascal) are also considered. The conversation concludes with a look to the future of metamodernism, and a consideration of how it is playing out in the realm of contemporary spirituality. 00:00 Introduction 01:56 Beginnings: Coining "Metamodernism" for a New Cultural Sensibility 09:25 Is Metamodernism the "Dominant Structure of Feeling"? Chess Grandmaster, philosopher, author, and social entrepreneur Jonathan Rowson joins Terry to explore our global, civilizational predicament from new angles — inspired by his recent brilliant essay “Tasting the Pickle: Ten Flavors of Meta-Crisis and the Appetite for a New Civilization.” They go beyond its more recognized features such as COVID, the climate emergency, and our economic and political crises to consider it as a crisis of civilizational purpose, a lack of a meaningful global ‘We’, and its various socio-emotional, epistemic, and spiritual features. Then, Terry and Jonathan explore a more personal and intimate relationship to the meta-crisis. What does it feel like for each of us to live amidst its various energies and aesthetics? How can we learn to “taste” ideas, practices, and possibilities for their beauty and transformative power? What’s it like to interact with different worldviews in more playful and paradoxical ways? And lastly, we discover inspiration in considering the larger cultural project of building viable “we’s” that are meaningful, coherent, and effective in serving the whole. Jonathan Rowson is a philosopher, author, chess Grandmaster, sensemaking entrepreneur and the Director of Perspectiva, a research institute based in London seeking to highlight the important connections between systems, souls, and society amidst our complex crises. Jonathan previously Directed the Social Brain Centre at RSA, the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacture & Commerce. He is an applied philosopher with degrees from Oxford, Harvard and Bristol Universities. Jonathan is the author of multiple books including Spiritualise: Cultivating Spiritual Sensibility to Address 21st Century Challenges (2017) and The Moves that Matter – A Grandmaster on the Game of Life (2019). As mentioned above, Jonathan also very recently published a brilliant essay providing an overview of our civilizational predicament called "Tasting the Pickle: Ten flavors of meta-crisis and the appetite for a new civilization,” which you can find on our episode page on stateofemergence.org. Here are some additional questions explored in the episode: How does our use of language in describing our meta-crisis shape our experience and response? How does Jonathan’s humorous use of “pickle” invite a different experience? As we attempt to understand our predicament, how can we “go meta” with our sensemaking in a way that also grounds us in direct experience and relationship? Which emotional, cognitive, and relational capacities can enable us to navigate the cultural dissonance of our time? How can we build more sophisticated and effective “we’s” at scale, and how might such work begin to impact our systems?  For more information on Jonathan Rowson and Terry Patten, check out the following resources: Jonathan’s recent essay, “Tasting the Pickle: Ten Flavours of Meta Crisis and the Appetite for a New Civilisation” Perspectiva, which Jonathan co-founded in 2016 with Tomas Björkman Jonathan’s book, The Moves that Matter Jonathan’s book, Spiritualise Jonathan’s 2020 essay, “An Open Letter to the Human Rights Movement” Jonathan’s 2019 essay, “Buildung in the 21st Century: Why Sustainable Prosperity Depends on Reimagining Education” Jonathan’s Aeon magazine article on Concentration State of Emergence podcast website Terry Patten’s nonprofit, A New Republic of the Heart Terry Patten’s personal website Join Us for the Next Podcast Q&A EventWe will be exploring this episode with Jonathan Rowson in greater depth during our next live State of Emergence live Q&A on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at 12 noon Pacific. In our conversation we look at purpose from the perspective of adult development. In the first part Tomas outlined three stages of purpose: unconscious purpose, conscious inherited purpose and chosen purpose, as well as three levels of chosen purpose: rational purpose, soul purpose and universal purpose. We discussed these stages from many different angles, and Tomas shared about how his sense of purpose has changed throughout his life and how that relates to the stages. In this part of the conversation we look at the questions of why purpose is important, what we can do in order to create a more purpose-infused society and what a world infused with purpose might look like. After building several successful businesses he did an exit in 2005. 2008 he started a foundation called Ekskäret with the mission of making sense of the world we create and allow brave spaces for people to explore and work on their inner growth. One of those spaces is an island called Ekskäret outside Stockholm that is used for transformative learning. They also have a co-working space in Stockholm called Klustret. Tomas is a fascinating man and I am sure you will get a lot from this conversation. Across the world, millions of people are working to create a better place by looking to design a post-pandemic new normal. A new book titled ‘Changing The World We Create’, offers a bit of this, and has been called a “how-to reference guide for change agents, leaders and activists everywhere.” The book is a synthesis of a 10-year research project led by Tomas Björkman. On this episode, Tomas explains how we can collectively change the narrative of what it is to be a human and to set a new course for humanity - beyond climate crises, polarized societies, and failed leadership.

At the start of the 20th century, the Nordic Countries were some of the poorest in Europe, with the lowest quality of life. By the end of the century they were some of the wealthiest and best places to live in the world.   Why and how? According to philosopher and social entrepreneur Tomas Björkman, the reason is that they paid attention to inner development, more than outer growth, in a huge cultural project of personal growth.   He argues that the pace of change that we are going through now requires a similar focus on the techniques of development.   You can also become a Rebel Wisdom member, for many benefits including our regular Q&As with the interviewees from our films, check out: https://www.rebelwisdom.co.uk/plans

It’s Friday 1st June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   BLACK CAB MAKER LEVC REVEALS PLUG-IN HYBRID VAN London Electric Vehicle Company has unveiled its plug-in hybrid van, a sister to the range-extended TX black cab. "Its vehicle will not focus on “last-mile delivery” but instead will provide the link between out of town distribution centres and city destinations" say Autocar. “Our segment is vans that undertake 100 miles a day, a role currently filled by 1-tonne medium-size diesel vans,” said LEVC. "The light commercial vehicle will be built at LEVC’s £325m factory in Warwickshire, alongside the range-extended EV cab. The purpose-built facility was opened last year as the UK’s first dedicated site for electric vehicle production." Autocar add: "The van will use the same powertrain as the TX taxi, an advanced battery electric set-up with a 1.3-litre petrol generator. This range-extender technology gives the TX a range of more than 400 miles and it can run for more than 70 miles on electric power only. It can charge its depleted battery to almost full in 20 minutes via a rapid charger, in two hours with a fast charger and in about eight to ten hours on a trickle charger. Similar figures are expected for the van, although are likely to be slightly less given the vehicle's extra weight."   HYUNDAI KONA EV GETS NORWEGIAN PRICE I saw a tweet yesterday from EV authority Christina Bu all about the Hyundai Kona in Norway - so with the help of Google Translate i got the gist of the article. And then a couple of hours later it would have been easier to read the Electrek article! "The Kona is supposed to get 482 kilometers (WLTP) of range which equates to just under 300 miles. The long-range Kona will have a similar amount of horsepower as the Chevy Bolt at just over 200hp or 150kW which should propel the heavier car to 60mph in around 7.6 seconds. Kona production has already started and the first customers should start receiving them in July. Hyundai is limiting deliveries to 2500 in Norway this year, a far cry from the 20,000 people on the waiting list."   CANADA'S FIRST BIG DELIVERY OF TESLA'S MODEL 3 LIKE 'CHRISTMAS MORNING' FOR SOME OWNERS It has been described as Christmas morning for Model 3 reservation holders! "The first large-scale delivery of Tesla’s much-anticipated Model 3 sedan has arrived in Canada, ending months of waiting for anxious owners who based their purchase on nothing more than online specs and photos." reports CTV: "Teslarati reported that roughly 300 examples of the Model 3 were spotted in a Toronto parking lot on Wednesday. Some who were taking delivery in Toronto were told by Tesla that they were attempting 200 deliveries per day. However some reports online today pointed at there being a lack of Tesla staff to handle how much work is involved, as Tesla pursue an aggressive delivery schedule.   VATTENFALL TO LAUNCH INCHARGE IN GREAT BRITAIN IN JUNE 2018 Vattenfall, the Swedish energy group, is to make an ambitious first move into the British electric vehicle charging market next month with the launch of InCharge, its “any-driver-can-use” infrastructure concept. Building on its electric vehicle (EV) lead in north western Europe, Vattenfall hopes to have its first, or partners’ first charging poles installed during the second half of 2018. Vattenfall is also targeting the domestic market allowing drivers to charge easily at home, at work and in public. Vattenfall will allow any EV to charge at any Vattenfall InCharge charging point on a pay-as-you-go basis. Vattenfall will also promote roaming agreements with other charge point operators or driver service providers, unusual in Great Britain but increasingly common in northern Europe. The head of Vattenfall e-mobility Tomas Björnsson said today that the combination of Vattenfall’s investment plans and smart solutions for home, office and destination charging will boost confidence in the young British EV market, increase competition, help tackle drivers’ range anxiety, support clean air zones in Britain’s cities and ultimately bring down cost to British drivers. He goes on to say that a more open network is a ‘must’ if GB’s EV potential is to be realised.   EV CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE SET FOR MAJOR BOOST WITH NEW LONDON TASKFORCE "London mayor Sadiq Khan is bidding to avoid a potential electric vehicle charger deficit in the capital with the launch of a new taskforce." according to Sam Sheehan in Autocar: "Khan’s newly announced Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Taskforce includes 16 organisations, with representatives from business, energy and infrastructure, as well as the Government and London boroughs, to focus on improving the city’s charging infrastructure. The group’s arrival comes as the UK’s plug-in vehicle market has seen unprecedented rates of growth. Last month, plug-in car sales (including full EVs and plug-in hybrids) surged by 50%, pushing the UK electrified fleet beyond 200,000 vehicles."   TESLA BATTERY MANUFACTURER PANASONIC TO DEVELOP COBALT-FREE EV BATTERIES If you were picking up the free financial paper in the UK, CityAM, you'd have seen: "Panasonic has said it plans to start development of electric vehicle (EV) batteries without using cobalt due to the production component's high price and scarcity." Kenji Tamura, chief of Panasonic's automotive battery business, said: “We have already cut down cobalt usage substantially. We are aiming to achieve zero usage in the near future, and development is underway.” At a meeting yesterday, the chief of automotive business Yoshio Ito said that Panasonic and Tesla had agreed to boost production of battery cells as Tesla aims to increase production of the Model 3 to 5,000 units per week by the end of June.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Vårt statliga energibolag Vattenfall släpper ut mer koldioxid i atmosfären än hela Sveriges samlade utsläpp.
