This week we're diving into the topic of combatives, and it would be hard to find a more qualified guest to discuss the topic than the one we have today. From bare-knuckle boxing the ROK Marines' Taekwondo champion to establish the US Army Combatives School, he has done it all. Matt Larsen is a former United States Army Ranger and combatives instructor. He is known as "The Father of Modern Combatives," credited with the creation of the United States Army's modern combatives doctrine and the establishment of the U.S. Army Combatives School. Larsen enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as an infantryman in 1984. He was stationed overseas in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan with the Marine detachment at Naval Air Facility Atsugi. During this time Larsen began training in judo, Shotokan karate, and traditional boxing. During his time in Japan Larsen fought in the Japan Karate Association's All Japan Karate Championships, Muay Thai bouts in Thailand, and a bare-knuckle fight against the ROK Marines Taekwondo champion. He was also a member of the 3rd Marine Division's boxing team. Matt then transitioned from the Marine Corps to the Army and made his way to Ranger Regiment. Initially assigned to 1st Ranger Battalion at Hunter Army Airfield, Larsen parachuted into Panama with the Rangers during Operation Just Cause and was also involved in Ranger operations during the Gulf War. After moving to 2nd Ranger Battalion he found himself as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of combatives and Close Quarters Battle (CQB) and started developing a more formal curriculum. This led him to taking over the combatives program for the entire regiment. During an assignment to 11th Infantry Regiment he establish a combatives schoolhouse in a warehouse. Within a short time, the school became so successful that units from throughout the Army began sending their soldiers. Several new courses had to be developed in order to continue teaching beyond the initial course, with the idea of building programs within these units. Eventually the school was recognized by the Army as the "United States Army Combatives School". In 2002, the training manual which he had been working on since his time with the Ranger Training Brigade was published by the Army as Field Manual 3-25.150 (Combatives). After more than a decade leading combatives for the Army he now works at West Point's Department of Physical Education as the director of their combatives program. You can find Matt on Instagram at the extremely appropriate handle @combatives

The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the eleventh episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guest is the Platoon Sergeant in 3rd Platoon, Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (2-505th PIR), 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, SFC Tyler Manship. The 505th PIR has the honor of being one of the oldest airborne units in the U.S. military as they were activated in July 1942 during World War II and earned four of its five combat jumps during the fierce fighting of WWII. They have the Hollywood call-sign of “Panther” with 2nd BN having the call-sign of “Task Force-2 Panther” and the motto of “H-Minus.” For the rotation in question, Panther Brigade supported the rotation by providing augmentation leaders and Soldiers to assist as both Observer-Coach-Trainers (OCTs) and Opposing Force (OPFOR) personnel. In this episode they discuss the importance of rigorous, realistic, and relevant training, whether it's Ranger School for the individual or collectively at the JRTC as the Rotational Training Unit. The importance of these type of training events cannot be overstated as it builds the foundation for our warfighters through arduous trials that cultivate character and humility while providing leaders expertise as well as a shared experience basis. This process gives both the leader and subordinate confidence in themselves, their leadership, and the organization in general. They additionally delve into leader development with an emphasis on the Non-Commissioned Officer side-of-the-house. NCOs must be able to not only understand doctrine but be able to utilize it. Platoons must be prepared to self-sustain and fully embrace the “no one is coming to save you” mentality. (“The Last Tactical Kilometer.”) An underlying theme that applies to every warfighting function (WfF) is you must master the fundamentals before you can attempt the master skillsets and this applies at echelon. Roscoe joined the Army as a means to go to college. Roscoe enlisted as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal soldier. A military occupational specialty with a challenging curriculum and a high training attrition rate. Roscoe succeeded in that path, and made Non-Commissioned Officer in a short period of time just before the opportunity to attend West Point presented itself. Roscoe attended the United State Military Academy Preparatory School and West Point graduating with a engineering degree and branching as a Military Police Officer. Roscoe would deploy to Guantanamo and Iraq leveraging his training as an MP Officer and his experience as an EOD soldier. The transition to the civilian world and journey to continue Federal service didn't work out as planned, but Roscoe found his niche and a new way to serve in modeling and simulations. Ryan Tate sat in his high school English class and watched in horror as terrorists took down the World Trade Center and Pentagon. He had a strong urge to fight on the front lines, and he knew the Marines would provide him with an opportunity to do just that. So he signed his enlistment papers at age 16, received his high school diploma early, and skipped high school graduation to attend Bootcamp at Parris Island in 2003, where he earned the title United States Marine. As an Infantryman, Ryan participated in some of the most intense battles of the Iraq war. He earned awards for combat valor, “Marine of the Year,” and “Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year.” His service took him to Southeast Asia to train foreign militaries and assist in counter-piracy operations. Ryan says, “Being a Marine allowed me to see humanity's best and the worst. The contrast is humbling, and I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything in the world.” After leaving the Marine Corps, Ryan continued his service to our nation with the U.S. Department of State. He served on protective details for high-profile diplomats, both foreign and domestic. After four years with State, Ryan was at home on a Sunday evening and watched a documentary that exposed him to the atrocities of poaching in Africa and the damage that the illegal international wildlife trade had on developing African communities. One particular scene of a female rhino dying a slow, painful death after poachers sawed her face off gave Ryan a gut punch that changed the course of his life forever. In 2013, Ryan took an exploratory research trip to Tanzania at the invitation of President Kikwete and the Ministry for Natural Resources and Tourism. His mentors at the State Department connected him to Government Officials from several African nations to discuss their wildlife protection needs. Each official he spoke with recognized the importance of providing their country's park rangers with specialized military training. It became even more apparent to him during this trip that veterans and their skills would be a game-changer for park rangers and conservationists in the fight to protect endangered species. After returning home from his first trip to Africa, Ryan resigned from the U.S. Department of State and founded Veterans Empowered To Protect African WIldlife. https://vetpaw.org/
Jayne Amelia Larson speaks with former foster youth and survivor, Lisa Marie Arnett. Lisa Marie endured 36 placements and horrific abuse from the age of 2 on until she aged out of foster care at 18. She was then homeless for 3 years but even so, she managed to put herself through college and then joined the Army. She's now a helicopter mechanic, and raising a beautiful young daughter and practicing 'gentle parenting' which she never had but has learned to practice to raise a happy healthy daughter. She has a background contributing to and collaborating with the work of non-profits, schools and philanthropies around foster care advocacy and awareness raising. Her experience includes technical inputs to programming and advocacy efforts; public speaking on topics of foster-care, homelessness and sexual violence: as well as implementation of social media awareness campaigns from design to execution. Lisa currently serves in the National Guard as a Non Commissioned Officer. She was recently highlighted in a video produced by the Army recognizing her for her foster care advocacy. She/her siblings experienced foster care and homelessness as a child and young person; she/her siblings are survivors of abuse and childhood sexual abuse and her sister is a survivor of sex trafficking. Lisa has critical insights into the experiences of children facing the risks of sexual exploitation, abuse and trafficking, understanding of processes and protocols within government systems that serve youth and youth victims, as well as identification of key limitations and opportunities from a crucial lens for this issue.IG@misslispisaTikTok@misslisapisalinktr.ee/MisslisapisaNEST FoundationTogetherWeRise DoGudCollectiveKids to LoveAtlantic Counter Trafficking (ACT)

Are you prepared to fail and fail again? How can former service personnel adapt their mindset to succeed not just in the private sector but in building a business of their own? Today's episode will resonate with a large proportion of the EP community who at one time or another have been an 'army of one'. We are very pleased to welcome Scot Walker, CEO and Founder of Walker and Associates to discuss: What is special about entrepreneurship within the veteran community? What do ex-service personnel have to teach the private sector about business? Does coming from a hierarchical background become an impediment to working in the private sector? Are there common pitfalls when selecting post-service career training? Should you replicate your military or police role in the private sector as a business? About Scot: Scot Walker started his journey of citizen service as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the military before being appointed as a Federal Criminal Investigator. Scot worked in multiple countries, collaborated with foreign police and intelligence agencies to identify and resolve considerable threats to U.S. citizens and military members. Assignments included serving on the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and an International Smuggling Task Force. After more than 20-years of honorable service and numerous overseas deployments, Scot decided to focus on family and take his skills to Silicon Valley. Scot has worked with some of the most iconic technology brands on the planet as an investigator and consultant, helping them protect intellectual property, mitigate risks to employees, and reduce loss by uncovering the root cause of a problem. https://www.linkedin.com/in/scotwalker1811/ (LinkedIn) https://www.walkerinvestigations.page/ (Walker & Associates) More about the Circuit: The Circuit Magazine is written and produced by volunteers, most of who are operationally active, working full time in the security industry. My name is Sergeant Derek Ruck I am a Recruiter in the Wisconsin Army National Guard at the age of 24 years old. I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin in a small house outside of the city. I've served 4 years so far, with 16 more years to go. Making a huge goal of mine to be what people call a “Lifer”, someone who decides to stay enlisted in the Army National Guard on active orders for a full 20 years of service. I joined the National Guard as a 13B Crew Member in Field Artillery “The King of Battle''. My training sent me down to Fort Benning Georgia for Basic Training and then to Fort Sill Oklahoma for Advanced Individual Training (Job Training). After that, I was sent back to Wisconsin and set up to drill one weekend a month in Marshfield, WI with the 1-120th. There, I learned how to load 105mm rounds into a 119 Howitzer and send those rounds downrange. Hence my favorite phrase, “Send It!”. I truly joined though to create a purpose and make a difference in my life, now my goal is to help people find that purpose in their life and be able to recruit them into an organization that I stand by and believe in to set each and every one of them up for success. Everyone thinks joining the military is a risk and challenge beyond comprehension, but without trying. You'll never know your full potential. My hobbies are fishing, weight lifting, reading, and cooking. A goal of mine is to own my own business in the near future. Specifically, a coffee business, which may or may not already be in the works. Don't ever tell yourself you can't do something. I am very passionate about spending time with family and loved ones. You can never get back time. Leadership isn't a skill I magically acquired when I finally became a Non-Commissioned Officer in the Army National Guard. It was learned through hard work and also trials and tribulations. Going through hard times as a member of a team with my fellow peers and deciding what we needed to do to set ourselves up for success, but also how to learn from our mistakes. Studying my leaders for their good and bad flaws, and how to and how not to act. With 3 years of constant growth, I was able to finally be called a Sergeant and prove that I was rightfully up for the task at hand.

Leadership. Leadership, Leadership, Leadership. We talk a lot about it in the Army. It is in the name of every Non- Commissioned Officer education course yet we fail to teach how to create real influence in these courses. As always, I share some solutions to go along with these problems. I also share what it was like going to this leadership course and being asked to lead a team through an open field to attack the objective even as an aviation sergeant! I learned how to lead a formation in drill and ceremony while marching them around, which I never used!!! Lots of exciting things coming up in the show!
Today, we are very fortunate to have a guest on the show, who continues to serve his military community through his strength of comedy with meaningful motivation. The Leaders Corner is the official Podcast of the U.S. Army Reserve. In this Podcast Command Sergeant Major Ted Copeland has an in-depth conversation about refining the Non-Commissioned Officer Corps.
Tiffany served in the Army for ten and a half years. While she was in the Army, she was a logistician and she deployed to Iraq twice. She left the military with her masters degree using Tuition Assistance while on active duty and this past December graduated with her second masters degree using her GI Bill. Tiffany decided to join the military because she felt lost and didn’t know what she wanted to do. Although she had been a good student in high school, she didn’t want to have her parents pay for college without her knowing what she wanted to do. So, she decided to join the Army. After she had committed to the Army the one school she had applied to came back with a scholarship upon her acceptance. She was hoping she could get out of her military commitment and go to college instead. But her parents told her she had already committed to the Army and needed to fulfill her commitment. So off to boot camp she went. Not long after being in the Army she deployed to Kuwait for the initial invasion to Iraq. While waiting for the invasion to take place they were in Iraq and a Non-Commissioned Officer told her that they were waiting to go to war. She couldn’t believe it. It seemed like someone would have told her before it. It wasn’t until she saw the scud missiles in Iraq that everything came together and she realized she might not come home. As they pushed into Iraq, she expected they would enter war and there would be fire fights and bullets. But crossing the border was uneventful and instead their days were full of driving. They were always hot, always dirty and almost always on the move. They lived in their vehicles and kept pushing forward. About a year and a half after she deployed to Iraq she went back to Iraq. This time there were camps built up and since she went back to almost the same location, she could see how much change had happened since she had left. In 2003 you had your vehicle and your uniform, but it wasn’t like that the second trip. There were showers, you had a room, there were internet cafes, tents to call home, and more. Another big change between 2003 and 2005 was how the war was being fought. They hadn’t seen a lot of combat in their first round while they had been looking for landmines in 2003. In 2005, Improvised Explosive Devices, suicide bombers and convoy ambushes were a real threat. The war had evolved. The threat was amplified. She watched the evolution of the war. As the military tried to respond to the threat. Going from Humvees with no armor to trying to armor the Humvees, but sometimes causing more damage and having sand bags as protection. The war progressed in such a way and eventually the military was able to create a vehicle that added more protection. And if you have ever seen a side by side comparison of a Humvee and a Mine Resistant Ambush Protection (MRAP) vehicle you can understand why the change was so important and necessary to fight the war. She also dealt with a helicopter crash where she didn’t allow herself to grieve and really struggled for years after the incident happened. She felt guilty for living and she felt guilty for struggling with the deaths of the people she knew who passed. We talked about the importance of getting mental health help along the way and for military members to process all the different experiences they go through. It may have happened years ago, but if you are struggling you can and should get help. Want to connect with Tiffany? Ryan served our country in Ramadi and Fallujah with the U.S. Marine Corps in some of the most intense fighting of the Iraq war. Ryan reached platoon sergeant status and received combat promotions and awards as an infantryman as well as being recognized as Marine of the year in 2005 and Non-Commissioned Officer of the year in 2006. He also trained Iraqi Police and Navy Corpsmen in infantry tactics. He earned a Naval Achievement Medal for his Combat Valor. Ryan has been with the Department of State for four years. He served on the Ambassador Susan Rice's Protective Detail for three years and currently serves as a General Services Specialist. In addition to his service Ryan Tate has always been an animal lover. After returning from one of his tours in Iraq he was deeply affected by a program he watched on TV that showed an African rhino still alive and suffering greatly with half its face hacked off solely for its horn. Tate, realizing that criminal poaching networks operate very much like the intricate terrorist networks in the Middle East, set out to repurpose his skills into an effort to stop the slaughter of these magnificent endangered animals. Many Post 9-11 U.S. veterans often have difficulty leveraging their combat skills in a conventional civilian vocation. Ryan realized these vets could benefit profoundly from the opportunity to utilize their valuable military skills in combat-related areas protecting endangered wildlife in Africa and saving lives. With Tate's military experience and savvy navigating the tumultuous world of “boots on the ground” conservation, he's able to speak directly to the unique skills that veterans can bring to anti-poaching efforts making a vital difference for endangered species and veterans that now have a renewed sense of purpose. “take negative criticism as just criticism or as just help. Don't look over all look past negativity it's happening for a reason and so it should be focused on but it shouldn't be taken to heart. You have got to grow a thick-skinned, you have got to be able to take a punch, you have got to be able to take several punches to the mouth over and over and over again. But if you don't get up you are not an entrepreneur – you are not. So be prepared to take a hit, grow thick skin, don't let it alter your direction, let it improve your direction and the efficiency and the speed that you are headed in. And just take everything as a learning lesson. It's all part of the journey. The Quicker that you can take criticism as a learning lesson instead of negativity the quicker that you are going to get your mission done and certainly the less years are going to be taken off of your life from the stress that comes with that negativity. So as negative as it is try to just take it in stride and build off of it.”…[Listen for More] Click Here for Show Notes To Listen or to Get the Show Notes go to https://wp.me/p6Tf4b-7cX

2-Minute Tip — Tempo When things are going well or smoothly we often talk about being in a state of flow. We feel it in music; we feel it when we’re writing code; we feel it when we’re doing needlepoint; and we feel it on stage when we speak. Part of what drives that rhythm is finding the right tempo, or pace, for ourselves and hour talk. Tempo goes beyond just finishing on time (though that’s important, too). It’s about honing in on the natural way that you talk. If you naturally talk fast, that may be fine. I you talk fast because you’re nervous, then that’s something to worry about. The length of your sentences, the words you choose, your phrasing, etc., all impacts your tempo. When you find yourself giving a talk that just “feels right,” ask yourself what you were doing in that talk. Ideally you recorded it so you can go back and listen to it again a figure out what made it smooth. You probably found your tempo. And when that happens, don’t fight it — lean into it. Embrace your tempo. Your speech can also have its own tempo, separate from the speaker. Different content will lend itself to different pacing. Talks may rise and fall emotionally depending on where you are in it. The energy level shouldn’t be the same throughout; let it fluctuate as the content dictates. Ultimately you want the tempo of you as a speaker to be in line with the tempo of your talk. If you can’t get there, then rethink that talk. Post Tip Discussion: Meet Lyle Tard Back in college on the debate team I found my performance in competition rose or fell to the level of my competitors. The value in competing against a really awesome team was that it would draw out the best in my performance. That was my experience in today’s conversation with speaker, trainer, Podcaster, Servant Leader, and Airforce Technical Sergeant Lyle Tard. His enthusiasm and energy is contagious. Bio Lyle Tard is the Founder and CEO of IMPACT Servant Leadership, started in 2018. He is currently entering his 19th year as a Technical Sergeant in the United States Air Force and serves his country while still on active duty at the 305 Maintenance Group at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst as the Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of Training Management. During his Air Force career, he has been all over the world, from Europe to the Pacific Islands and everywhere in between. Among his accomplishments are honors such as Non-Commissioned Officer of the Quarter and Lance P. Sijan Leadership Award – Non-Commissioned Officer Tier. He has guided the careers of more than 10,000 Airman from civilian to military life, leading them in cutting edge training of their newly developed skills. He previously managed the Community College of the Air Force program at the United States Expeditionary Center’s school, touching the lives of more than 43,000 military and civilian members annually just before his current posting. As a communicator, Lyle has spoken worldwide inside and out of the military community. He has motivated young adults at institutions such as Atlanta Leadership College, American University and Harvard Business School. Just as in the Air Force, Lyle takes pride in leading the next generation of world changers. From universities to businesses to churches, Lyle’s passion is to influence the world to realize that “Leaders lead best when they serve.” IMPACT Servant Leadership aims to transition our most impactful areas of society to realize that achieving power with others is more beneficial socially and economically than asserting power over others. Lyle is also the primary moderator of the Service is Power podcast, spreading the message that “The Power to Serve, Serves us All.” Along with his wife of 14 years, Sherrell and his two children, Alycea and Ethan, Lyle has served as the Youth Pastor at Gulf Coast City Church in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, Missions Director at National Community Church, Washington D.C. and Lead Elder of Lighthouse International Ministries in Brunssum, Netherlands. Gain From Our Perspective Lyle found inspiration in the slogan of Franklin Templeton Investments. Here is one of their commercials. Episode 13 of Service is Power Lyle talked about how his guests surprised him in Episode 13 of the Service is Power podcast. Here is that episode Training I found Lyle’s description of training in the military particularly interesting. It’s a model based on simulating the experience as much as practical since in the real world lives, millions of dollars in equipment, and US foreign policy are all on the line and dependent on that training kicking in when it’s needed. Obviously, most corporate trainers do not face the same stakes, but our work may take us closer than we think. The way our learners do their jobs can impact millions of dollars of business, the jobs of their coworkers, and the health or safety of colleagues and customers. eLearning and stand-up lectures can be part of the training solution, but ultimately we need to get our learners as close to the actual real world work as much as possible. Go Make a Thing As you probably noticed in the conversation, I also like how Lyle started his podcast on Servant Leadership. He went looking for content for himself, found it didn’t exist, so he created it. It’s the origin behind my Strokecast, too. If there’s a resource you are looking for that you can’t find, go ahead and create it. You will help others, and you’re likely to learn a lot in the process, too. At 19 years old, Justin left the beautiful town of Henderson, KY, and enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his 20 years of service, he held a variety of different jobs – everything from Cook to Combat Readiness Instructor. His most taxing job, however, would be when he was assigned as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge, Mortuary Affairs. For nearly six years he spent his time performing human remains inspections, uniforming the deceased, organizing military escorts, arranging for burial with honors, and consoling grieving families. Justin also managed Combat Mortuary Operations at two separate deployed locations. In late 2012, Justin decided to share his story in the book, “And Then I Cried, Stories of a Mortuary NCO.” His hope was the story could help others struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He is also an accomplished artist and his works can be seen hanging on the walls of the Pentagon in the Healing Arts Display. In 2013 Justin was Medically Retired from the Air Force with 20 years of service. After retirement Justin continued his advocacy and worked with The Air Force Wounded Warrior Program where he managed the Ambassador Program. He was responsible for teaching seriously injured or ill Airmen how to tell and share their stories of recovery with audiences worldwide. During his tenure there, he trained over 55 Warriors and briefed over 30,000 Airmen ranging from Airman to Four Star General. Justin now works at Warriors Heart, the country’s only dual diagnosis drug and alcohol treatment center that works exclusively with Military, Veterans and First Responders suffering from chemical dependency and psychological injuries such as PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury. Justin has been featured on CMTs “I Love Kellie Pickler” and has been a guest on over 200 radio shows nationwide. In 2015, he was awarded the American Solider Networks Hero Service Award for his work helping veterans in need. Justin has only one wish – if his work inspires you, do something about it, live beyond PTSD, live with purpose, and find your voice. To see Justin’s previous speaking events, click here.
Live Your Dash to the Fullest and Live a Life of AbundanceMen, it's always great to catch up with old friends. And when I say old friends, I'm referring to friends we've know for a long time. Not that they are old. Because that would make us old as well. In any case, you get the rare chance of listening in on a conversation between myself and a fellow Army Combat Medic. Tim excelled in the military. And obviously, that was just a warm up. Tim has taken Abundance to a whole new level. I hope I don't get in trouble for this. But I really wanted to share the poem, Tim was taking about. So here you go. I also shared the Ted Talk video for you below. The Dashby Linda EllisI read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on the tombstone from the beginning…to the end. He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time that they spent alive on earth. And now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own, the cars…the house…the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash. So, think about this long and hard. Are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left that can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough to consider what’s true and real and always try to understand the way other people feel. And be less quick to anger and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before. If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile, remembering that this special dash might only last a little while. So, when your eulogy is being read, with your life’s actions to rehash… would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent YOUR dash? Reference: http://www.linda-ellis.com/the-dash-the-dash-poem-by-linda-ellis-.html Meet or Feature GuestTimothy Stroud is a former combat medic in the United States Army. He also sought out a mentor during his transition back into civilian life and began a seven-year relationship with leadership expert Mr. Paul J. Meyer. While stationed at Ft. Hood, Tim build an Army Wall of Fame to showcase 500 celebrities who support the military. It is still on display on the largest military post in the U.S. Tim excelled as a non-traditional student at Grand Canyon University, finishing his education by utilizing his Post-9/11 GI Bill. Graduating with Academic Honors on both the Dean's and President's List, Tim secured a Bachelor of Science in Applied Management from the Ken Blanchard College of Business in May 2011. He completed his Masters in Leadership from the same program in December of 2013. Volunteering in the community, Mr. Stroud worked in collaboration with the State of Texas, NAMI, SAMSHA, and BEITZ to better understand the early signs of Post Traumatic Stress and how to successfully get veterans and family members connected with resources. This led Tim to become one of the first Peer to Peer Support Facilitators in Texas and helping start the support groups in Central Texas. Mr. Stroud lobbied Texas Congress, alongside the VSOs that he supported for more education benefits in Austin, TX and San Antonio, TX to the Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Committee (Senator Leticia Van de Putte, Chair). Bruce McQuain from QandO joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce is a veteran of the Vietnam war and spent 28 years in the U.S. Army. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. It is so great to have him as part of the show, "It is often said by professional soldiers that the heart and soul of any army can be found in its Non-Commissioned Officer’s corps. It is the Sergeants who really run the military. We officers are only allowed to think we do. And every good officer who rises through the ranks to command armies is the product of a long line of outstanding NCOs who taught him the ropes at every level of command. Tonight I’m going to tell you the story of three courageous Staff Sergeants that fought a key battle in Afghanistan in 2005. It is a battle you’ve probably never heard about. But the story is an inspiring one. Most of the information about Staff Sergeants Matthew Blaskowski, Patrick Brannan, and Christopher Choay comes from the US Army." The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Bruce has now taken over and he does an incredible job with the series every week. We are so fortunate to have him as a regular part of the program.
