Today on Daily News You Can Use, Ray and Zach discuss the latest headlines from Toyota, where they have trimmed their full year forecast for vehicle production. What is going on at Toyota? Tune in to learn more!
The KwaZulu-Natal floods, along with the associated disruption in the movement of automotive components and vehicles via the Durban port, as well as the ongoing global semiconductor shortage, have all taken a significant toll on South Africa's second-quarter new-vehicle export and production numbers. The April floods shut down Toyota South Africa Motors' (TSAM's) plant in Durban until its full reopening in August. The Japanese car maker is the market leader in South Africa, with around one in every four vehicles sold domestically a Toyota. TSAM is also a significant exporter. According to Naamsa | The Automotive Business Council's newest business review, South African vehicle production dropped by 17% in the second quarter of this year compared with the same period last year. Light-commercial vehicle (LCV) production was especially hard-hit, as Toyota also had to halt production of South Africa's best-selling vehicle, the Hilux bakkie, at its Prospecton plant. This saw overall domestic LCV production drop by 37.3%, to 41 109 units, in the second quarter of this year compared with the same quarter last year. Naamsa also notes that overall second quarter new-vehicle exports from South Africa dropped by 15.3% (77 340 units) compared with the corresponding quarter last year (91 349 units). This decline was again attributed to the KwaZulu-Natal floods, as well as “the ongoing repercussions” of Russia's invasion of the Ukraine, hampering export volumes to key markets such as Europe. Some good news is that second-quarter new-vehicle sales increased by 4.7%. However, this number was down 13.8% on the first quarter of this year. New-energy vehicle sales also declined by 47.3%, from 1 401 units in the first quarter, to 738 units in the second quarter.

BMW Group South Africa (BMW SA) has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) range with the addition of the i4 and iX3. The BMW i4 is a four-door gran coupé and the German car maker's first purely electric model focused squarely on driving dynamics from the outset. Initially only one model variant will be available from launch – the BMW i4 M50. This performance model uses one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear to deliver system output of 400 kW. True to the spirit of the M range, the vehicle can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. Range is up to 510 km. In a short mid-journey stop at a high-power charging station, the car's range can be increased by as much as 140 km within 10 minutes from a 10% charge level. The BMW i4 model in South Africa is supplied with the BMW charging card, a flexible fast charger for charging at up to 11 kW and a mode 2 charging cable. The vehicle is priced at R1.6-million. The BMW iX3 sports activity vehicle is the electric version of the X3 made in Pretoria at the Rosslyn plant. The range of the vehicle before the battery is depleted is up to 460 km, with ten-minute fast charging adding around 100 km of range. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h happens in 6.8 seconds. The vehicle is priced from R1.29-million. With the internal combustion engine BMW X3 made in South Africa, is there an opportunity for its electric sibling to be produced locally? BMW SA spokesperson Hailey Philander says it is not possible for the local company to comment on future production plans. However, she adds that the Rosslyn plant remains “an important part” of the global BMW group production network. “Currently, up to 96% of BMW X3 production is destined for export markets and many of the markets that BMW group plant Rosslyn traditionally supplies are shifting towards EVs. “The BMW group is considering the introduction of electrified drivetrain vehicles for future production at BMW group plant Rosslyn,” notes Philander. “Key to this, though, would be a review of the local industrial policy to, in particular, support the expansion of general infrastructure projects, and foster an environment that supports the local manufacture of EVs and EV components. “BMW SA has been – and continues to – work closely with government and other stakeholders in the country to advance the electromobility agenda in South Africa. We welcome any developments that can encourage the wider adoption of electromobility in South Africa.” Government is yet to complete its sector support and development policy for the local manufacture and introduction of EVs. The term ‘electrified vehicle' includes hybrids and plug-in-hybrids.

TESLA Q4 2020 VEHICLE PRODUCTION & DELIVERY REPORT PRESS RELEASE Q4 Numbers and 2020 Year "In 2020, we produced and delivered half a million vehicles, in line with our most recent guidance. In addition, Model Y production in Shanghai has begun, with deliveries expected to begin shortly." Q4 2020 Production Deliveries Subject to operating lease accounting Model S/X 16,097 18,920 11% Model 3/Y 163,660 161,650 7% Total 179,757 180,570 8% 2020 Production Deliveries Model S/X 54,805 57,039 Model 3/Y 454,932 442,511 Total 509,737 499,550 "Our delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct. Final numbers could vary by up to 0.5% or more. " YoY growth of 36%. "When Tesla announced its fourth-quarter results for 2019 on January 29, management set a target for full-year deliveries of 500,000 vehicles. This would translate to about 36% year-over-year growth compared to the approximately 368,000 vehicles Tesla delivered in 2019." reported nasdaq.com: "But what management didn't know was that the world was about to get hit with a pandemic that would lead to unprecedented lockdowns, including temporary shutdowns at the company's factory in both Shanghai and the U.S. Indeed, Tesla's main vehicle manufacturing factory in California would end up being shut down for about half of Q2." What's the split of 3 & Y? Tesla don't publish. PRODUCTION CAPACITY As per Tesla: ""We have recently increased capacity of Model 3 / Model Y to 500,000 units a year. In order to do this, we restarted our second paint shop, installed the largest diecasting machine in the world and upgraded our Model Y general assembly line. Production should reach full capacity toward the end of this year or beginning of next year. ...Model Y in Fremont expected to reach capacity-level production soon. Our most recent capacity expansion investments are now stabilizing with Model 3 in Shanghai achieving its designed production rate. Model 3 production capacity has increased to 250,000 units a year." Fremont, California Model S/X 90,000 Model 3/Y 500,000 Shanghai, China Model 3 (capacity of up to 250,000 annually / 5,000 per week, at three shifts (increased from 200,000 / 4,000 per week previously, and 150,000 / 3,000 per week initially), Model 3 since late 2019 Model Y (initially expected capacity of 150,000 annually, probably will be similar to Model 3), from 2021 Total 840,000 at the end of Q4 2020 not including MY in China. 210,000 a quarter. So they're close to production limit. That's important to note because Tesla fanatics tell you they sell every car they can make, and Tesla haters like to point out they have more installed capacity than they can use. TESLA BY REGION FOR 2020 Whilst these are only estimates, those who track the numbers suggest: US - ~205,000 deliveries China ~150,000 deliveries Europe ~100,000 deliveries Asia-Pacidic ~30,000 Canada ~22,000 XPENG DEPLOYS LIDAR TECHNOLOGY Xpeng Inc. (“Xpeng” or the “Company”, NYSE: XPEV), a leading Chinese smart electric vehicle (“Smart EV”) company, has collaborated with Livox, a leading lidar maker, to deploy its automotive-grade lidar technology in Xpeng’s new production model in 2021. Livox is Xpeng’s first partner in lidar technology. Xpeng’s new 2021 production model will be the world's first mass-produced smart EVs equipped with lidar, solidifying Xpeng’s cutting-edge position in the smart EV technology. The addition of lidar effectively improves the vehicle’s high-precision recognition performance, significantly enhancing the entire vehicle’s perception capabilities, particularly the accuracy and spatial resolution in the horizontal and vertical axes, enhancing the ability to avoid pedestrians and static obstacles. Coupled with lidar’s ability to monitor small obstacles regardless of ambient light levels, this can provide greater safety redundancy for ADAS functions. Xpeng’s autonomous driving platform already integrates camera, millimeter-wave radar, ultrasonic and other sensors. The addition of lidar will not only provide a greater level of safety redundancy, by allowing more accurate imaging of the road situation, but will also enhance target detection, measurement accuracy, performance in low ambient light and other challenging perception condition https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20201231005262/en/Xpeng-Partners-with-Livox-to-Deploy-Lidar-Technology-in-the-New-2021-Production-Model GM TO SHOW OFF ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES AT CES 2021 "CES 2021 is going to be very different from past years. Rather than hordes of technology fans and journalists showing up in Las Vegas in person, the entire event will be held online. A new report has surfaced that General Motors CEO Mary Barra will give the opening keynote address on January 12 for the show. During her keynote, she will reportedly provide a peek at coming electric vehicles." reports SlashGear: "One of the GM concept vehicles that will reportedly be unveiled at CES is a plug-in Chevrolet pickup. It’s unclear if that pickup will be a plug-in hybrid or fully electric. GM will also be showing off electrified Cadillac models and electric vehicles for its other brands. GM President Mark Reuss also speak at CES about the automaker’s electric vehicle strategy." https://www.slashgear.com/gm-to-show-off-electrified-vehicles-at-ces-2021-02653242/ CHINA TO CUT NEW ENERGY VEHICLE SUBSIDIES " China will cut its subsidies on new energy vehicles (NEVs) such as electric cars by up to 20% next year, the finance ministry said on December 31, as Beijing seeks to boost fuel economy and cultivate home-grown automotive sector champions." writes Asia Times FInancial: "China has set a target for NEVs, which also cover plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, to account for a fifth of auto sales by 2025 compared with the current 5%. According to a statement posted on the finance ministry website, subsidies for NEVs in public transport, sanitation, postal services, logistics and civil aviation airports, among others, will be cut by only 10% compared with the 2020 level. Other areas will face a 20% subsidy cut. The proportion of NEVs in the sales of new vehicles is expected to rise to 20% by 2025, and vehicles used in public transport will be completely electrified by 2035, according to the plan." https://www.asiatimesfinancial.com/china-to-cut-new-energy-vehicle-subsidies-by-20-next-year REPORT CLAIMS NISSAN PLANS TO SCALE BACK ITS SALES NETWORK IN EUROPE "Nissan will be reducing its presence in Europe even further but its UK network will remain one of its target markets, according to reports in a Japanese newspaper. Publication Yomiuri revealed it had been informed by an unnamed source that the car maker will be scaling back its efforts in Europe although it will continue to sell cars through its Renault network." sais Car Dealer Magazine: "The areas that will be hit by this are largely in Eastern Europe, with thirty countries expected to see a reduction from the brand. In Europe, it says Nissan’s target markets will be the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy and parts of Northern Europe where its electric vehicles have been widely adopted. The article added that Nissan plans to close its Avila plant in Spain, after the Barcelona closure was delayed to December this year, and there is no mention of the UK Sunderland plant." https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/report-claims-nissan-plans-to-scale-back-its-sales-network-in-europe-but-the-uk-will-remain-a-target-market/212173 You can listen to all 949 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Looking for an electric car? You may have a problem finding one. ALSO: Ottawa is willing to put up money to have Ford Motor Company move electric vehicle production here to Canada. Guest: Marvin Ryder. Business Professor, DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University
Following record new-vehicle production of 631 983 units in 2019, supported by record vehicle exports, 2020 vehicle production is expected to decline by about 31%, to 435 500 units, says the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) in its newest quarterly business review. The severe impact of Covid-19 on domestic new-vehicle sales as well as export sales is reflected in the 65.2% decline in vehicle production during the second quarter of the year compared with the second quarter of last year, adds the association. In addition to this, second quarter new-car sales, at 28 201 units, recorded a decline of 51 814 units, or a 64.8% drop, compared with the 80 015 new cars sold during the corresponding quarter last year. Commercial vehicle sales, at 16 889 units, similarly recorded a decline of 26 264 units, or 60.9%, compared with the 43 153 units sold during the second quarter of 2019. The Naamsa report notes that second-quarter domestic new vehicle sales in fact registered the biggest quarterly decline on record – nearly double the decline registered in quarter one, 2009, during the peak of the global financial crisis in 2008/09. The domestic demand for new vehicles will continue to remain under severe pressure as projected negative economic growth of more than 7% does not bode well for the industry over the medium term, says Naamsa. The uncertainty around the anticipated impact and extent of Covid-19 also continues to cause planning challenges, with the industry’s reaction and adaptation to market changes remaining an imperative going forward. “A recovery in the new-vehicle market will depend on how quickly the economy can break out of its low-growth trap and how soon society will recover from the present Covid-19 lockdown,” states the Naamsa report. “Under normal circumstances, positive factors such as the further 150 basis-point interest rate cut to a near 50-year low during the [second] quarter, dealer incentives and low inflation would all be expected to support the new-vehicle market. “However, how far these dynamics will move consumers and businesses into new vehicle purchases over the balance of the year remains unclear. The industry is under no illusion that 2020 is going to be a very difficult year that will test its renowned resilience.”

Tesla hosts their 2019 annual shareholders meeting where they highlight the future of Tesla as a company. We ended the quarter with $2.2 billion of cash and cash equivalents, a $1.5 billion reduction from the end of 2018. This reduction was driven by a $920 million convertible bond repayment and an increase in the number of vehicles in transit to customers at the end of Q1. In addition, we began production and deliveries of Model 3 vehicles for overseas markets. As noted in our Q1 2019 Vehicle Production & Deliveries letter, due to unforeseen challenges we had only delivered half of the quarter’s numbers ten days before the end of the quarter. This caused a large number of vehicle deliveries to shift into Q2. ===== MagellanTV – a brand-new streaming service that features the very best collection of space and science documentaries available anywhere. UPDATE: On Wednesday, January 3, Tesla revealed it has pushed back its production targets for the Model 3 sedan, yet again. In its latest Vehicle Production and Deliveries report, Tesla says it is focussing on quality and efficiency, rather than just pushing for the max volume in the shortest time, and so is aiming for a production speed of 2,500 Model 3s per week by March, and double that by the end of June.
