#54 Stuart Ginn, WakeMed: A physician's perspective on medical drone delivery

The Vertical Space

Welcome back to The Vertical Space for a deep dive into the medical delivery use case, or I should say another deep dive into this interesting topic. We've had guests in the past – notably Justin Steinke from Spright – where we talked about the medical delivery use case from an operator and drone expert perspective. This time, we get to hear from Stuart Ginn who besides having a professional aviation background is also a physician and therefore looks at the drone opportunity through the lens of a healthcare professional – somebody engaged in delivering healthcare and intimately familiar with the complexities associated with it.  We've covered a lot of ground in this conversation, starting with a description of the existing internal logistics systems within a large healthcare system, and more importantly its current problems that drones might successfully address. And we do this in the context of macro factors that healthcare faces in providing access to clinical services to rural areas. We compare the B2B medical drone delivery business model to that of the B2C consumer delivery and have a lively discussion around which is more likely to become a killer app first.  The opinion that the B2B medical drone delivery use case is a promising market opportunity is commonly shared in the industry. However, what is not adequately discussed is exactly how this value will be realized, what matters to hospitals, and what the ultimate product needs to look like to ensure wide adoption. Here's where Stuart's insights really stand out. For instance, instead of thinking about drones as part of a transportation system, Stuart believes they should be considered as an extension of the infrastructure, not unlike pneumatic tubes in hospitals today. As usual, we go deep, ask tough questions, and uncover interesting insights not widely shared.

In state news, Wak Med has gotten approval from the state to move forward with building two new hospitals. According to WRAL, one hospital will cater to behavioral and mental health services, which officials say is a large need for Wake County. Garner is the proposed site for a new treatment center which will offer 45 beds for people with long-term illnesses. The health care system also plans to build a state-of-the-art behavioral center in Knightdale. The Knightdale facility will house 150 mental health beds. Organizations have 30 days to appeal the state's decision. However, WakeMed's spokesperson says that 30 days will be up by this weekend for the Garner property. If there is no opposition, WakeMed will be able to move forward with planning and development. In national news, a man in Florida shot and killed 3 people including a child and a reporter covering the shooting. According to the Associated Press, the man was riding in a car with his cousin when he shot and killed another passenger before returning to the same neighborhood near Orlando hours later where he shot four more people. Of those four, the man killed a journalist covering the initial shooting and a 9-year-old girl. Spectrum News 13 identified the reporter as Daniel Lyons and said he was in an unmarked news vehicle covering the original homicide when a man approached and shot him and his cameraman. The shooter went on to a nearby home where he fatally shot T'yonna Major and critically wounded the girls mother. WakeMed Health & Hospitals, a large and growing health system, chose a mobile wayfinding platform to improve access to care and engage with patients at each step of their journey before, during and after care. The app guides patients to their point of care with step-by-step directions and provides access to the right resources to meet their health needs. Patients have access to their WakeMed MyChart patient portal and medical records as well as a robust “Find a Doctor” database. App users can schedule an appointment, reserve their seat in urgent cares, check up-to-date emergency department and urgent care wait times and more. Since the app launch in 2018, WakeMed continues to leverage and evolve features of the app to enhance communications and meet the immediate needs of their patient populations. The real-time digital response of the location-aware mobile platform allows WakeMed to stay agile and act immediately on situational awareness. WakeMed recognizes the intrinsic value of having a direct conduit to patients that provides location-aware alerts, access to telehealth, navigation to off-site testing locations, symptom checkers to triage patients, and more, to manage patient flows and improve access to contactless or in person care.

Use Cases & The Current Opportunities & Realities of DRONES and Drone video footage Today we are DIGGING IN further to the state and opportunity of DRONES.  As I explained in Ep 15 the Drone market is growing to 129.23 billion by 2025, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The Drone market is growing on an extremely HUGE projectory!  The FAA reports that there are guess how many registered drones in the US?  1.6 Million, 442,000 of which are used for Commercial.  Many pilots own more than one drone it’s worth noting. The fastest growth comes from businesses and civil governments. It is overall impacting a vast majority of industries: Drones are becoming a part of business in Construction, INsurace, Oil & Gas, Police or Fire Force, The Coastguard, Journalism, Customs or Boarder Protection, Real Estate (which I reference specific use cases in both residential and commercial in a bit), Utilities, Energy, Cinematogrpahy (movies which is how many of us think of Drone footage - which is at a 21MILL industry alone – bottom of the $$ projection list hey!) In this episode I also share follow up on My journey to becoming a certified remote pilot of an unmanned aerial vehicle or UAV and the growing Drone market and what it can mean for YOUR business!  For these flying objects - There are some very interesting uses cases being developed. There are unlimited use cases that are virtually untouched.  1 of the more obvious and talked about is delivery.  The FAA is encouraging innovation in package delivery and is organized to facilitate it with industry, local, state and tribal entities.  There is a five phase certification process that companies who want to incorporate a package delivery service. Traditionally, we’ve had UPS, FedEx, The United States Postal Service (where I still have to wait in line to get a package mailed), Uber Eats transports food to our homes and workplaces. On September 27, 2019, UPS Flight Forward conducted its first package delivery by drone with its part 135 certification when it flew medical supplies at WakeMed's hospital campus in Raleigh, NC. Allow me to introduce you (if you haven’t seen it) to a social media post (on Twitter) about a Drone experience serving a customer with excellence! He an Aerospace Ocean Engineering professor. He posted a video of receipt of a store order via a drone while his dog looked upon this odd machine dropping it down into his back yard. His Twitter handle is Shane Ross @RossDynamicsLab Professor @VirginiaTechAOE Aerospace & Ocean Engineering Apr 10 2020 he posted, Drone delivery to me & my dog at home. My 8-month-old Labrador was unperturbed by the drone, but curious and eager to go fetch the package (dog food?). The delivery was from Walgreens via @Wing , & arrived 5 minutes after placing the order. #logistics #dronedelivery #covid19 #dogs Now Grocery Drone Delivery  Speaking of Wing! Bloomberg reported that Wing, which is Alphabets Drone delivery service, is seeing a big increase in orders in the Christiansburg, VA pilot program  it has been running since the Fall of 2019.  In fact, demand has doubled since Covid 19.  Wing partnered with FedEx and Wallgreens to send household essentials to local residents .  They even now have added a local bakery and coffee shop! To expand offerings during the Pandemic.  This drone pilot on YouTube, Dmitri Marian, reversed engineered coffee delivery – during Quarantine because of  Covid19 from his home, ordered a cup of coffee from his local Starbucks and flew his drone that had upgraded antenaes, TO Starbucks, they put his coffee in a bucket attached to the drone and he flew it back.  Dude!  Take a listen and I put the link to the video in the show notes if you want to see it.  It He posted another one on both YouTube TikTok where he orders a cup of coffee from McDonalds.  If you want to watch it and you’re on TikTok he is @dmitritv There is still a lot to figure out before we will see multiple brands doing this….having to do with regulation and safety. Prime Air with Amazon is coming, you may have heard.  It will be a service that will deliver packages under 5 lbs in 30 min or less.  Prime Air has development centers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria, France and Israel. We are testing the vehicles in multiple international locations.  The link in the show notes has a few videos – quite entertaining and humorous videos, where Amazon helps you understand how what they call “a miracle of modern technology” will help you understand the conveniences it will offer you and imagine under what circumstances you will be able to use it!  Your child has a soccer game, the dog at one of her soccer cleats – Amazon Prime Air to the rescue! Dominos Pizza has been investing in automous delivery for a few years now.  They tested drone delivery but the automous car will be released first as they have partnered with start up mini manless self driving car, Nuro.  The little bug like cars drive up to 25 mph.  Dominos announced their partnership in 2019.  I have the link to a video featuring the car and the service in the show notes. The service is limited to customers who place online orders in Houston, and they deployed its grocery delivery service in Houston in March. Nuro’s partnership with Domino’s initially will be limited to a single location and will begin in the fall. “We are always looking for new ways to innovate and evolve the delivery experience for our customers,” Kevin Vasconi, Domino’s executive vice president and chief information officer, said in a statement released by the company.  Quoting again, “Nuro’s vehicles are specially designed to optimize the food delivery experience, which makes them a valuable partner in our autonomous vehicle journey." "The opportunity to bring our customers the choice of an unmanned delivery experience, and our operators an additional delivery solution during a busy store rush, is an important part of our autonomous vehicle testing,” the statement added. Now you are Visualizing your product being placed on a Drone. Or let’s back up – how can the order even be placed for Drone delivery? I encourage you to to consider text …I talk about this in an upcoming episode with a barbeque restaurant who is DOMINATING this!  If you’re a restaurant owner, please hear me on this.  Text ordering will help you.  I plan to release that episode explaining it all next week. So! Onto Use Cases in the Medical field Matternet M2 Parcel Delivery Drone Matternet is the world’s leading technology platform for on-demand drone delivery in urban environments. They specialize in very fast accurate delivery of medical items such as blood samples between locations inside of healthcare or hospital systems.  Their drones can carry up to 4.4 lbs and travel twelve and half miles within 30 minutes.  This benefits both patients (customers) and the healthcare efficiencies and man hour costs. A company called Dragonfly has created a model that from nearly 200 feet, their drones can detect several coronavirus symptoms, including fever, blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate.  So if one of these drones (you’re standing out on the street) detects Coronavirus of someone else who has the virus you might be glad.  You might be glad if it were you! Or some might feel this is an invasion of my privacy.  I don’t know….it’s so new.  It’s in similar vein of regulating wearing masks – at the time of this recording, states like Massachusetts and NY, NJ and many others are all fining citizens when they are out of their homes without masks on their faces. I don’t live in one of those states right now. There are phenomenal Use cases for Residential and Commercial REAL ESTATE There are results floating around the web claiming that Listings that feature drone photography and videography sell 68% faster! Well a Company called SoldbyAir conducted their own study to be sure of that data, and they report that 83% of home owners prefer to work with an agent who uses drone videography to feature their home.  They also found that high volume agents meaning those that are more successful I guess you could say, selling more homes, or spending more time on the craft – they use aerial footage 3.5x more often than lower volume real estate agents.  Which I thought was really interesting. The footage can be used (the drone footage) for real estate on the listing platforms like Zillow as well as formatted to social media platforms.  Apartments, townhomes and senior living homes can be viewed from a buyers home.   Which is really convenient, and experiential, you know what I mean?  They feel like whoa – there’s music and they start feeling like they are seeing it face to face. For Commercial developers, instead of looking at outdated Google Maps, current drone footage informs a purchase consideration or project preparation.  There’s also something called, Orthomosaic Mapping which is stitched together drone footage that provides a high resolution piece of gigantic perhaps hundreds of acres of property with extreme precision, accuracy and detail.  Commercial realtors know that the maps are a crucial piece to closing on a deal – and these deals are most often very large in price.  The maps – particularly video – help engage the emotional connection to the property.  It helps the realtor demonstrate the market expertise and opportunities of the special area transitions between you know - the various spaces, roads, natural elements like trees etc.  Very powerful!  Jerry Inguagiato, friend of mine, Senior Vice President with CB Richard Ellis, which is a commercial real estate broker or agent, told me “it enhances the visual experience for my clients.”  So he said that very confidently. It is a reality that a drone is yet another moving vehicle – thus the name, “unmanned aerial vehicle or UAV”. With that comes the inevitable accident or collision.  My exam studies this week have covered many aspects of drone pilot safety knowledge so far.  One, you cannot fly at night and there are very specific guidelines around when is considered night.  When is it night? Do you know? They are very specific - How the pilot has to be within 3 statute miles  of the drone from the control station a person standing at the control station of the small UAS must be able to see at a diagonal distance of 3 miles into the sky in order to detect other aircraft that may be approaching the area of operation So much like boat safety, there’s “see & avoid” laws and the pilot cannot be in a moving vehicle or aircraft while operating the drone.  Meaning you can’t be driving something while you are operating the drone which sounds obvious but there are some wild risky people out there!  So there’s rules around this pilot license. So with your business…there may or may not be something that there is an application.  But of all those industries that I listed, it isn’t even a whole set. These are the Questions Thinking of yourself - YOU as a consumer – is often how I urge people to think about it we are all consumers ourselves, put your self in the customers shoes which I know you do pretty much every day – ask will you get great benefits??  With Covid19 we are all needing grocery delivery at times…some of us are using that exclusively, some of us are blending – using it most of the time, while supplementing with “mini trips” and others are doing ONLY mini trips and no grocery order.  So anyway, it’s just a mish mash of how people are going about it depending on their circumstances.  But it’s transforming the industry as well as the customer experience.   So what’s relevant to all of us today is Food – food delivery, restaurant experiences and grocery stores.  And I want you to think about how can your business either have a dotted line to the food business or how can you learn from the essential food business customer experience?  Because this is not just about beautiful  videography right?  It ‘s also about practicality, so it just depends on what it is. ….pause (music) Back to case uses - Another active use case is in Agriculture where our food sources are grown or harvested.  Drones are saving time for farmers, ….they are being used for things like, scouting fields, discovering weeds and diseases that erode growth, they help identify things like water deficiencies! Important stuff to the Ag industry. Now there are 3rd party software that agriculture companies can purchase to create maps on the health of their crops.  Why I highlight this is to connect the technology capability.  The Drone is the capture device and with it, it can inform and VISUALIZE which can then be transmitted into data visualization software to help business owners see and understand realities, patterns, and insights. No matter what your business or industry is, what you can ask – ask yourself these questions: How can I help my customer better visualize my business or offerings? This relates to the video aspect, similar to the real estate examples I gave; What kind of insights can I discover in my business to improve my customer experience? This means discoveries from footage…or engagement or conversations from customer viewership; How many perspectives or discoveries can I make available to either my customer or my management team to help them make informed decisions? This is long term findings and patterns….throught long term patterns to be able to make changes. The Emotional Connection - We are going through the living experience of change with the growth of Drone use – both professionally and the hobbiests flying them….how do you FEEL about the buzz of Drones being around you?   I am talking about the emotional or feelings you might have of them being being a part of our lives? Have you envisioned or FELT this becoming our new norm?  I’ve listened to people share how they are very uncomfortable with Drones being around them.  It’s weird now but do you think it will be like, “normal and fine” after we adjust and reap ongoing benefits? I’ll leave you with that.  Thank you for being here once again.  Please share it with anyone it might help in their business and let me know if you’d like anymore content like this around drones.  I am going to continue to cover the topic through my journey to become a certified pilot myself.  I have a little ways to go!  But I am chipping away at it and I appreciate your support.  Have a great rest of your day or evening.

American shipment company United Parcel Services (UPS) established a subsidiary devoted to drone delivery operations. Recently, the subsidiary, named UPS Flight Forward, started working in cooperation with a startup company to deliver packages using drones. Its focus is on sending medical supplies that are needed for laboratories. In the past months, the courier has been delivering laboratory packages within WakeMed, a hospital in Raleigh /ˈrɔ li/, North Carolina. UPS Executive Bala Ganesh said that the company will also offer its services to other hospitals in the area. UPS's drone delivery is the company's answer to Google and Amazon's efforts to provide a similar service. However, UPS Flight Forward's service specifically targets urgent-need deliveries, which none of its competitors have done. The company believes that a lot of hospitals and laboratories will patronize UPS's services, given that delivery via drone is much faster and cheaper than regular shipping methods. According to UPS, the drone delivery services it offers may even be the key to saving lives during emergency situations. In an effort to strengthen its operations, UPS Flight Forward has recently applied for certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. The company is appealing to the Aviation Administration to give it the go-ahead to operate in more areas in the United States and to make deliveries even at night. If the certification is granted to UPS, the company plans to branch out to delivering packages to factories. The company expects to profit from factories by providing speedy delivery of important things like parts for critical machinery.

In today's drone news show, we discuss drone delivery services, the latest DJI news, DJI rumors, Drones in films and much, much more. Will we see a new DJI drone on May 15th? Tune in to find out! Will New Firmware Upgrades for Phantom 4 Pro RTK Enhance Drone Mapping? Our first DJI News is about the Phantom 4 Pro RTK. DJI has introduced new firmware upgrades for their mapping drone, Phantom 4 Pro RTK. These new firmware updates introduce new flight modes, one of them being terrain awareness. Terrain Awareness allows mappers to map a site with large elevational changes accurately. While these upgrades are quite positive, drone mappers have already been flying in "Terrain Awareness" mode using Maps Made Easy. Has DJI been unable to fulfill its initial promise of a "compressed and easier workflow" with the Phantom 4 Pro RTK? Why are drone pilots still preferring the ubiquitous Phantom 4 Pro over the Phantom 4 Pro RTK? Drones in Hollywood In our second segment of this show, we talk about drones in Hollywood. Australian drone maker, XM2, makes customized drones that have been used to film some popular Hollywood movies like Aquaman and the upcoming, Star Wars. Their largest drone, Sierra, weighs 70 kilos and has a payload capacity of 30 kilos. Even large birds like the Alta 8 (payload 6.8 kilos) and the Matrice M600 (payload 6 kilos) dwarf in comparison to this XM2 drone. XM2 drones have some serious capabilities, and not surprisingly, they cost some serious money too. While drone costs range from $20,000 - $70,000, an entire drone system (inclusive of the camera) could see your cost balloon to as high as $500,000! But, are drone providers in Hollywood complying with drone laws and regulations or simply skirting the law? This serves as a good segue into our next topic - Drone Delivery Services. WakeMed, in Association with UPS, Starts Drone Delivery Services in North Carolina We have been reporting how archaic drone laws and FAA's tentative approach have prevented drone deliveries from taking flight. In our last Drone News show, we revealed how Amazon has managed to get permission from the FAA to start drone deliveries in rural Virginia under CFR 135. In today's show, we share how WakeMed hospital campus and UPS have begun using drone delivery for transporting medical samples. Hearing how the power of drone technology is being leveraged to provide more efficient healthcare will certainly enthuse all drone enthusiasts tuning in to this show. This Drone News segment again highlights how drones can be used for the greater good. The Biggest DJI News Story for Today - Are the DJI Rumors True? Will We See a New Drone on May 15th? And, saving the best for the last. Our BIGGEST DJI news story is about a new product release on May 15th, 9 am EST. Die-hard optimists might still be hopeful of a DJI Phantom 5 launch on May 15th. Or, shall we see an upgraded Mavic 2 or maybe even a Spark 2? While Haye KNOWS exactly what we will see from DJI on the 15th, unfortunately, he cannot reveal the answer because he has signed a strict NDA with DJI. Airing date: 03/30/2019 Using Two Factor Authentication - Drones Delivering Blood Samples And Barking At Animals Craig Peterson 0:00   Hello, everybody, we are getting close. My goodness, I can't believe it has been that long. We're almost at show 1000. I think today is 999. I'll have to check. But man, I guess we should do something soon. I just been so busy for all you guys because that means 1000 weeks of shows. Some weeks I put out as many as 12 podcasts. I've put out. I've been on the air 5, 6, 7 times in a week. So it has been a very busy time. So I'm not talking about 1000 podcasts or I'm talking about 1000 radio shows, and literally tens of thousands of podcasts. Isn't that crazy? Yeah, over 10,000 actually, podcasts. I added it up, five years ago, and I had interviewed more than 7,500 C-level executives. Yeah, it's just nuts. Of course. Lately, it's been primarily just me right here on the radio, sharing what I've learned over the years online, or the guy that's been kind of out front, getting all the arrows in my back, putting together internet protocols, implementing them helping businesses get online. Man, I've been doing that since 91, when it first came became legal to do business on the internet. And I quickly ended up getting into security within a couple of years because of what happened to me and my business. And so I had to become an expert in security and now i"m known as America's leading security coach, which is really kind of cool when you get right down to it. But has been a long road. Let me tell you. Craig 2:03  Well, today we are going to go through a couple of really cool articles. This one's a little disconcerting. This is from NBC News. We're going to talk about AI, artificial intelligence. And they talked about how artificial intelligence when fed the right data, and when programmed the right way. They call it AI, right? But you and I know it's really machine learning. But in the United Kingdom, they were able to use it to predict when someone was going to die. And that's part of the National Health Service, which I guess shouldn't be a surprise to anybody, right? Government running the health care, they want to know when you're going to die so they can, you know, get someone else ready to go into your bed. Craig 2:51 Is personal data safer when it's stored on your own computer, your company's computer, your company's network or on a private network? Some interesting stats that came out and published in Forbes this week. Craig 3:04 Apple's finally showed off its plan to conquer TV this week. So we'll talk a little bit about that. I signed up for their News Plus service. And it's not bad, but it's still a little disappointing, frankly. But you know, we'll give it some time. We'll talk about that as well. Craig 3:25 Now UPS This is one of the first real uses of drones for delivery. You might remember that we had the 711 people working on using drones for delivery. And we've had Amazon working on using drones for delivery. Now, UPS has launched a new service using drones to transport blood and other medical samples between various buildings at WakeMed Raleigh's medical campus, North Carolina. And the speed that the drones can deliver these samples could literally be the difference between life and death. A great article from Futurism, which you'll see in today's show notes that we sent out this morning. But it's kind of cool here. They're using an autonomous drone developer called Matternet. And they've got something called an M2 quadcopter, and it can carry a payload up to five pounds, approximately 12 miles. So the medical professionals, there at WakeMed's nearby facilities are loading the drone's containers get a secure container, so that if it crashes, that, you know, people are going to be able to steal what's in it, or get contaminated because they're putting blood samples and other medical specimens into the drone. And then the drone follows a fixed path over to the healthcare system's main hospital there on the campus. And it goes right to the pathology lab who then unload it. Now Business Insider had a good article about it as well. And they're saying that this trip can take a driver up to 30 minutes. Yeah, that's how big this whole campus is. Plus, you know, some of the buildings aren't getting directly attached. And when you're talking about traffic, it can get terrible, and if you've ever been down there in the triangle, it's absolutely terrible in Raleigh, some of the traffic. But these unmanned drones that are being run and managed by UPS can cut the delivery time down to just three minutes and 15 seconds. So that's why they're saying this could really save some lives. So for now, UPS is expecting the drones to make fewer than 10 deliveries a day on the campus. But that could increase in the future, especially as there's services that are considered to be beneficial. And of course, UPS is expecting that to happen. This is very cool. So there you go. Kudos to UPS for doing that. Craig 6:01 I've also got a whole thing here on two-factor authentication we'll get to in a second. But barking dogs, this is kind of cool. You know, for years, we've had shepherds using dogs. At my house, you know, I have chickens, right. I have bees and chickens. And we have a dog, we have a Great Dane. And it's a rescue Dane, we've had four of these Danes over the years. And she is about four years old now. We got her when she was three and a half. But she has been kind of a couch potato. And we were really surprised the other day when her instincts kind of kicked in. And we were out taking care of the chickens. And we had the coop door open, actually was one of my daughters, and the coop door was open. And one of the chickens decided to come running out which we let them do, right. We pasture raised them. So they go out into the pastures and they find all of the horsey stuff and everything and they tear it all up and have fun with it, eat all the bugs that are in it. So, it's okay if they get out. But we don't just want one out, we want to be able to kind of keep an eye on them. This time of year, there's a lot of predators. We've seen some hawks going around, we saw an eagle the other day coming by and sitting there, and you can hear them shrieking very loudly as they're right near us. And of course, that just freaks the chickens out who when they're out wandering around, spend most of the time under the bushes. But, and By the way, we have seen one of these birds of prey take one of our chickens before. We've seen a fox took one of our pet cats as well ran off the property with the cat in its mouth. And a little distressing. But I guess it's good for the foxes and the birds of prey this time of year. So we wanted to keep her in. And our Great Dane, Velma. She didn't like that chicken coming out because my daughter, you know, tried to shoo the chicken back in. And so Velma took care of it, and rounded her up and got her right back there into the run. Or actually, I guess she came out of the coop door. So back into the coop. And that surprised me but not terribly, because I know dogs have this instinct to do hurting. And we have dogs specifically bred for herding, right, you know about sheep dogs and things. So in this case, with a Great Dane that was bred to hunt wild boar, I wasn't sure what she'd do. Craig 8:32  She also, this was a month or two ago, she also helped with one of these birds. Because we had some the chickens were out. And we have an outdoor roosting section for them. So if it gets raining, they can just go sit in there and enjoy being outside a little bit but at least be covered. And we're trying to get the chickens out of this roosting stuff. And so she saw what we were doing. And she, she grabbed one of them by the wing and carried her back. She was being gentle. The chicken wasn't harmed at all. But it's really kind of cool to see.  Craig 9:14 Well, farmers have relied on dogs for a long time. And real farmers have multiple animals that all kind of help out each other, you have the cats to keep the field mice down, or heaven forbid the rats down, right, or the squirrels or the chipmunks which we have here as well. And they stay out of the feed and they're not spreading disease amongst your herd. And then you have the chickens too because you have horses or cattle, you have the chickens to break up all of that excrement, right, and then eat all the bugs from it. So you don't get the huge populations of flies or beetles or things. So they keep that population down. And then you have pigs. And they'll eat all of the scraps from the other animals what they don't want to eat, as well as from your table. And then you have goats because they'll eat the stuff that the cows and the horses won't eat, the particularly stuff and the lower nutrition things. So you have all of these animals and it's kind of a roundabout isn't it all the way around. And then you have the dogs out protect all of these animals, you have the sheep as well. So it's really quite an ecosystem if you've ever seen it work and have you ever sat down to think about a farm and how this all works. And course you have kids to help out on the farm, as well. Now we don't have these little farms like that anymore. Really, we don't. We take the manure from the chickens after a couple of years of its sending out and we use it in our own personal garden. And just it's phenomenal. We have some of the best flowers and, and vegetables around. But that's the way it used to be. Craig 10:52  Well now here's somebody getting rid of the dogs as part of that whole, a whole environmental loop on the local farm. And this is an article that came out of New Zealand. There is a company in Christchurch, New Zealand, it's called DJI Ferntech. And they have a special set of drones that are specifically designed for agricultural uses. And we've seen stuff kind of like this before will though, they'll survey the land to look for blight or maybe insects, problems that are occurring in your field. So that's what this company is doing down there New Zealand. And it's kind of cool because they have these kinda like county fairs. They call them agricultural field days, down there in New Zealand. And he's saying for the past two years we've seen farmers embrace drone technology to help with those jobs that are dirty, dangerous, or just plain dull he said. So what one of their new drones and this is on a cattle farm is set up with speakers on it where it can bark like a dog. Craig 12:06 So they've got this 3,500 New Zealand dollar drone and the New Zealand dollars worth about 50 cents give or take. Not sure what it is today. But you know, so it's basically what may be a $2,000 drone at the most. It's called the DJI Mavic Enterprise and you can record sounds and play them over a speaker. So you can put a dogs bark or other noises there and it projects them wherever you want, very loudly across a paddock. And he said this feature helped him move livestock along faster during mustering while stressing the animals a lot less than a dog could because of course the dog is going to kind of nip at their legs, even though it's not going to bite them to get them to move and that's very stressful. And that means some of your cattle aren't going to give the milk that they could, etc, etc. Some cows are going to get very protective of their calves. When you have a dog out there. You might have seen that before, where they lunge at the farm dogs and they get too close. So it's really kind of cool to think about that. A drone instead of a dog. Oh, obviously a drone can't do everything a dog can do. It's not going to be completely autonomous. And someone's going to have to kind of watch it and man it. But over time that it will become more autonomous. But then what are we going to do? We're going to have dogs out of work, right? Craig 13:30 Well, two-factor authentication. Craig 13:34 This is a key part of security. This week, I put together a module on website security and one of the things I brought up is because so many business websites are getting hacked. And if you have a business, man, could you get hacked, so there's a lot to be concerned about. But using two-factor authentication on your website, for you, as an administrator to be able to login can save you know, end of grief. And security and on the internet just in general has gotten more important. And we're seeing it with built in security things now into our web browsers. Google has been protecting their stats are showing 1 billion websites that they are providing blockage to every day. Now it's not websites, but it's actually warnings to people who are using Google. And if you get blacklisted by Google, you will lose 95% of your traffic to your business website on average, which is just huge. So I explained that this week in that module on website security, what to do, how to do it and everything. But that number surprised me. 95% of your traffic and it can take you months to get back. And in most cases, the businesses never are able to get that traffic level back up because Google just doesn't trust them anymore. Craig 15:03  So having two-factor authentication can be a huge win. And that is where you have something you know, along with something you have in order to keep your logins safe. And when we're talking about something, you know, it's your password, right? It's your username and password, which is why I know I gave some tips on what to do there in this module. But basically, don't use admin as the admin user account. But there's some other things too. And then something you have, which is the two-factor authentication. Craig 15:38 You guys know, I recommend 1Password, LastPass as good as well. But I think one passwords definitely the best, especially for businesses. So you should look at tying that into your website login, as well. Craig 15:56 And if you do that, if you have the two-factor authentication using an authentication app, and you can get these for free Google Authenticator is a free app available on iOS or Android. And you can tie it into your website to allow you basically exclusive access to the administrative functions, you are and or other people within your organization that have to do the maintenance on the website. SMS messages are just not secure. We know about and I've talked on this show before about people hijacking your phone number, all kinds of nasty things that can help. Craig 16:39 Apple has two-factor authentication built right into iOS and Mac OS. They do little differently than pretty much everybody else. They're using the Apple ecosystem. So when you try and log in on your Mac, and it doesn't know that you are who you say you are, the Mac will automatically pop something up on your iPhone and say is that you and you get a six-digit Pop-up code. Craig 17:06 And you know, that happens when you log into iCloud and various other things. But there are a bunch of different ways that you can do it. Apple does make it easy. SMS messages really aren't secure. But I do like Google Authenticator and 1Password. They both, 1Password has the Authenticator built right into it. But it's absolutely fantastic. It's $60 per year for 1Password for the family plan. And you can have a shared vault where you keep the password that everybody in the family needs to access like your bank logins or, or other things that you might need, you know, the website for your kid's homework, all of that stuff for 60 bucks a year. It's just crazy. It also has one time passwords built into the app and everything. It's phenomenal nominal, these two-factor authentications. Craig 18:03 Authy's. Another one, you might want to look at. A-U-T-H-Y, if you don't use 1Password. It is a very good two-factor authentication app. It's better than Google Authenticator. It's a little broader. But it is easier to use in, In fact, one of the two-factor authentication is all it does. So it's very straightforward, very easy. You can scan a QR code that the site is giving you and use that then to use Authy or Google Authenticator or 1Password in order to be able to get in. Google Authenticator, I should mention, it's basically been the default solution for a lot of two-factor deployments over the last few years. And man, I, I can't remember the first time I used it. It was a lot of years ago. And I think it was Google, it was prompting me to try it out and use it. Microsoft now has theirs as well, Microsoft Authenticator. They've done a good job on this, I've got to say, Microsoft, with the exception of Windows, well, even with Windows, it's really been pulling up its socks lately. Windows is still terrible. Craig 19:15 But it is much better than it used to be. And if you use Microsoft products heavily, particularly if you're using Office 365, these authenticators are going to work really well for you. And in fact, that's exactly what we use to manage not only our deployment of Office 365 for internal company uses at Mainstream, but we also use it in order to authenticate ourselves to all of our partners, because we manage so many sites, all of their emails, we manage all of their networks, all of their security and everything. So you can bet we use the best of this two-factor authentication stuff. Craig 20:02 Apple, of course, had their big show this week. And one of the things that they released was information on its plan, where it is trying to take over the TV business. And this is from an article I have up on http://CraigPeterson.com from Business Insider. There's still a whole lot of questions that are answered after the event that happened just this week, it unveiled a new subscription service in the US. It covers TV, gaming and news markets. As I mentioned earlier, I signed up for the news stuff called News Plus, it's like 10 bucks a month and you get the first 30 days for free. And I kind of like it. There's some good magazines and stuff in it. I think they've got to clean their interface up a little bit more. And I wish there were more newspapers in that there's very few newspapers, but it'll you know, it'll get better. And Apple really is trying to get more into services because they're making a ton of money from their services sector already. And they're very good. And have you seen the new ads from Apple, the latest ones, where they're really touting security? They're touting the fact that they're not giving all of your information away, that they're not selling it to the highest bidder like Facebook has been doing. You heard me talk about WhatsApp, I have a great article up on my website about the guy who developed WhatsApp, and then sold it to Facebook. And he's now telling people to delete WhatsApp and never use it again. So if you want to find out more about that, and why that's up on my website, as well. But it's all because our friends and Facebook are really messing with people, which is kind of a shame. Craig 21:50 That used to be this article from again Business Insider goes through some of the older events and things that they've done. So they're calling it TV Plus, and a number of people are really kind of underwhelmed by it. But it's going to add more stuff in. What's going to make this very interesting is what the mouse has been doing. Disney. Have you seen what they've been doing they just a couple of weeks ago, got final approval, inked the deal with buying all of Fox's content and production. Fox Studios. No, we're not talking about the news network that's separate. But all of the movies and so think about this, basically, Disney now owns all of the top names out there all the Star Wars brand, and completely owns now, of course, all the standard Disney stuff. And now it's got Marvel under its belt. It even has Spider Man now, which used to be exclusively Sony's property. So the mouse, you know, if you can get them in onto your streaming network, you're in big trouble. And Disney, aka the mouse, is in direct competition with Apple for this stuff. Craig 23:09 So I don't know what that's what's going to happen here. Apple has always made its money off of selling the devices and selling us some services never selling your information. Disney is not the same. And I don't know that the two will be able to come to terms or not, I guess, guess we'll see. Craig 23:30 Your personal data, according to Forbes, is 99.99% safer on a major cloud service than it is on the average companies private network. Isn't that amazing? This is an article in Forbes and they're taking a quote from the site called Quora. And it's really kind of a cool one. Matthew Lodge wrote this. He's a tech executive. And he's talking about, frankly, the fact that most businesses aren't storing the data properly. They're not backing it up properly. They're not securing it properly. Hence my course, right, that I just finished delivering or actually I'm finishing just this week delivering all of the final components as I go through all of that, right. The integrity of the data of the fact that you get bit rot, that companies don't keep track of it. They don't have proper multigenerational backups. They're not pushing the backups off site. They don't have it on on different types of media. They don't have active defenses that don't have security monitoring, right. So duh. Yeah, it's 99.999% safer if you put it up on Dropbox. And so that's really interesting. They, he goes through and he talks about Google as well. And Amazon and what they're doing, they'll have stored stuff. Dropbox is what I recommend for businesses. And in fact, I put together in my last coaching call a whole thing about Dropbox and which version to get because I got like a million of them. But that's I find that to be just fascinating. Craig 25:15 And then our last article here this week is all about artificial intelligence, and the National Health Service over in the United Kingdom. If you've been listening for a while, you know that I and my family have suffered under the Canadian healthcare service for years, and the Supreme Court in Canada finally rolled that you can buy private health insurance, you don't have to get stuck with it. Well, much the same has happened in the UK because the healthcare, public health care is just so bad. It's just terrible. You know, everybody gets it. Craig 25:51 But it's all terrible, right, kind of the bottom line, and I can tell you horror stories from every member of my family that's still in Canada. But in the UK, they've been using some artificial intelligence algorithms. They looked at a half a million people in the UK and then they task this AI with predicting of individuals who were at the risk of dying prematurely. In other words sooner than the average life expectancy from chronic disease and they had three different models that they task the AI with. And this article up on http://CraigPeterson.com that is originally from NBC News, I think you're really gonna like this is they look at different things with each one of the models. They looked at things like well they had the random forest model, which looked mostly a body fat percentage, waist circumference, amount of fruit and vegetables of people ate. They had the deep learning model, top factors there included exposure to job-related hazards, air pollution, alcohol intake, use of certain medications. You had another model called the Cox model that lean heavily on ethnicity and physical activity. So they took those three models, they looked at it, and they found that the best and most accurate predictions that correctly identified 76% of the subjects who died during the study period. Wow, okay. 84% accuracy on predicting Alzheimer's, the onset of autism and six months old babies. So all of this work by the UK National Health Service to figure out you know, basically death panels. Who should we spend money on? And who shouldn't we spend money on? Which is what that's what's happened I Obamacare ended up with death panels. Of course, they don't call them death panels, any of these cases, but you know, the panels that decide whether or not you're worthy to receive medical treatment, I think you can tell which side of the market come down on with that. Craig 28:03 Alright, so this next week, of course, we're going to have some podcasts, probably only one because I am out of town. Very busy. But I'm releasing some stuff to those of you who signed up for my DIY cybersecurity course. And we will be back next Saturday. http://CraigPeterson.com/iTunes, to sign up for the podcast. Date: September 22, 2011 Featuring: Frank Federico, RPh, Executive Director, Strategic Partners, Institute for Healthcare Improvement Michael R. Cohen, RPh, MS, ScD, FASHP, President, Institute for Safe Medication Practices Lynn Eschenbacher, PharmD, MBA, Assistant Director of Clinical Services and Director PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program, WakeMed Health and Hospitals   Medication safety has gotten a lot more challenging in the past year or so, due to circumstances health care providers can’t typically predict or control: a growing, critical shortage of prescription drugs, hundreds of them, including mainstay generics hospitals use to treat several forms of cancer.  News organizations have begun to pay attention to the trend because of the tough decisions providers and patients now face when preferred treatments for certain types of aggressive leukemia or testicular cancer aren’t available. A recent story on The PBS NewsHour offers one of the more comprehensive looks at the underlying industry practices, product decisions, and manufacturing problems that have led to the crisis—a crisis that’s enabled a gray market to now traffic in scarce supplies of certain drugs in order to offer them for sale at astronomically higher prices. Against this backdrop, and while policy makers, members of Congress, and the US Food and Drug Administration seek both short-term and longer-term solutions, hospitals have no choice but to develop strategies and best practices that assume, for now, prescription drug shortages. WIHI host Madge Kaplan welcomes three people who have their fingers on the pulse of what’s going on and are actively working to help organizations effectively manage a complex situation. IHI’s Frank Federico, the ISMP’s Michael Cohen, and WakeMed’s Lynn Eschenbacher are three pharmacy-trained improvers who’ve tapped their expertise on medication safety to come up with new strategies that can enable hospital staff to stay on top of the fast-moving drug shortage problem on a daily basis. Learn how Lynn Eschenbacher’s hospital system in particular is effectively dealing with the crisis.  Additional information: Read an article in Healthcare Executive about the drug shortages, written by Frank Federico, Bona Benjamin, and Michael Cohen. We’d also draw your attention to a Premier healthcare alliance analysis of the gray market, which provides critical facts and guidance for hospital pharmacists and staff who purchase prescriptions.
