If you think something seems familiar about Orchard Sky, you're not wrong. However, the Western Canadian trio has put its previous identity as The Orchard firmly in the past and is excited to debut its dynamic new Country sound. When the group's long-time musical collaborators Mitch Smith and Andreas Wegner were in search of a new lead vocalist, they struck gold in landing two-time Western Canadian Music Award winner Krystle Dos Santos. Along with her stunningly soulful voice, she brings to Orchard Sky a powerful stage presence that has also been displayed in productions of Dreamgirls, and The Chelsea Hotel: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen, Orchard Sky's debut single, “Canadian Party Song”—which sounds as raucous as the title suggests—was released June 24 through Royalty Records, with the equally exciting tracks “Flashbang” and “Honest” from the band's forthcoming EP. With it, Orchard Sky is poised to become the next major Country export from western Canada, following the trail blazed by the many artists from that province who have come before them. Today on Celebrating Simple Life the Podcast, I'm chatting with Susan Busse. Sure, it says ‘publicist' on her business card. But her real passion is being a storyteller. She works with great clients to trumpet their brands to the world. Susan has worked with all manner of musicians, artists, film companies, festivals, and businesses, to great success. Like the time music clients The North Sound were interviewed on CBC's q with Tom Power, when fine art artist Denyse Klette was interviewed during the pandemic on CBC's The National, when Belle Plaine covered the front page of Arts & Life in the Edmonton Journal, or when Carrie Catherine was featured as ‘Ms. Chatelaine' in Chatelaine magazine. Her clients have an impressive list of awards and nominations. The key to Susan's success is that she really does care about the people she is working with and their projects, becoming an invested partner. You feel that connection when she's looking you right in the eyes as you're explaining your next big idea to her. In what can sometimes be a cutthroat world, that ‘look you right in the eyes' collaboration is as rare gift. For this week’s podcast, we have two fascinating and very different artists from the world of country music. First up, from Alberta, Mike chats with D’orjay The Singing Shaman, who was recently nominated for Country Artist of the Year at the 2021 Western Canadian Music Awards following the release of her debut album, ‘New Kind of Outlaw.’ As a Black Queer woman (and literally a shaman!), D'orjay is passionate, vocal, and committed to bringing diversity and inclusiveness to country music. As she boldly states on the title track of her album, “I love country music, but will country music love me?” Then, joining Mike from the other side of the world is Andrew Farriss, the chief songwriter behind Australian icons INXS. He released his debut solo album in March, which is Farriss’ first country-influenced endeavor. In country music, he says he found the kind of storytelling that truly connects with his life. Farriss is one of Australia’s most prolific songwriters and in 2020, he was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia. INXS were also the recipient of multiple ARIA awards and were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Around the world, the band was nominated for a JUNO and multiple Grammys. With a career spanning 30 years, they have sold over 50 million albums worldwide, including a Diamond selling status in Canada. Outside of INXS, Farriss is an Australian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame inductee. It's no wonder how he has amassed around 250 songs over the years.

In 2011, Steve 's Mud Dog Duo represented British Columbia at the 27 th Annual International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. While in Memphis the acoustic duo recorded a “live off the floor” ten song album titled Mud Dog SUN at legendary Sun Studio This old school live roots album climbed to #24 on the Canadian Roots Music Report for Blues. Steve has also worked as a BC public school teacher since 1986. In 2015, he was honoured with a Juno Award for MusiCounts Teacher of the Year for his innovative Rock School and Recording Arts program that he founded in 2001 at Terry Fox Secondary School in Port Coquitlam, BC. After The Yale shutdown causing the Vancouver Blues scene to suddenly collapse, Steve followed up with four years of steady solo acoustic work that resulted in his 2017 debut solo release, “Steve Sainas Simple As This This Contemporary Roots album reached #27 on the Earshot Charts and was received with great reviews. Most recently, Steve came back full circle to his love of ‘70s guitar rock and formed his classic rock power trio, SST that lit up suburban pub stages right up until our music scene came to a grinding halt on March 17 th 2020. On that tragic day, the COVID 19 isolation order wiped out every performance calendar in the world and has devastated our music economy. In order to effectively rebuild our music scene, Steve strongly believes that we need to remedy the exploitation of creative artists by ensuring that a fair sustainable living wage can be earned by all creative and performing musician s. This urgent remedy will be created from a music streaming levy that will help re vitalize our music economy. To that end, Steve authored the Canadian Musician Support Fund ( proposal. Of course, everyone knows exercise is good for a person's health; however did you know that consistent exercise and physical activity might actually help make you a better musician, performer and artist too? You always have to be at your best while you're on stage - mentally and physically. Physical fitness and good nutrition are a great way to accomplish that so you can ALWAYS put on ONE HELL OF A SHOW! Big or small! There's a lot to cover with our guest - we discuss ALL the benefits of how physical fitness and nutrition will make you the best artist and performer you can be, on (and off) the stage! We talk about how exercise improves you as an artist and performer, (Better Breathing/Improved Posture/Strengthened Muscles/Increased Coordination/Sharper Thinking/Inspired Music-Making/Improves Performance Anxiety), scheduling work outs and working around busy schedules and tours and keeping fit on the road. Nutritional planning and hydration, and optimizing your health for your performance and life by eating better. We also talk about body image and much more. Disclaimer: I'm NOT a personal trainer, doctor or nutritionist, neither is my guest, Alberta rocker Clayton Bellamy - but we are two music industry professionals who are passionate about fitness and health, and we've seen the benefits and want to pass on our wisdom to you, to better you - the artist! Disclaimer: before you do anything that will effect your health, please consult a professional - talk to a trainer, doctor, health expert, please. You're probably wondering why I didn't get a personal trainer/fitness expert for this. I wanted someone who has experienced the positive benefits of all of this from an active performer, who understands the artist aspect of this, who's been doing this for several years, who's busy, who's always on the road, who's in various projects, (which are The Road Hammers, Clayton Bellamy and the Congregation and Black Mountain Whiskey Rebellion, who's won many awards including a Juno, numerous Canadian Country Music Awards, SOCAN Songwriter of the Year, A Radio Music Award and Western Canadian Music Award, who has been featured in People Magazine, The NY Times, and Rolling Stone an who's released five solo records and has songs recorded by Big Sugar Matt Anderson, Dan Davidson Jason Blaine W3apons FKB Willie Mack and more HE'S STILL ON FIRE!) who understands the struggle is real - to juggle everything as a human AND artist, then trying to add being active and healthy on top of that - but he also understands how important this is for you. One writing session later, it was clear that these two musicians had found a powerful creative connection, and the project morphed into their 2010 release The Land of Make Believe. Initially approached as a children's album for grown-ups, The Land of Make Believe explores adult challenges through the eyes of a child. The album, which was nominated for Urban Album of the Year by the Western Canadian Music Awards, was released worldwide through a Creative Commons license. During its two weeks on file-sharing site Frostwire, The Land of Make Believe was downloaded over 240,000 times, and earned Block and Pemberton a global following that has fully funded their next album through Kickstarter.
