This episode features an interview with Glenn Weinstein, Chief Customer Officer at Twilio, a global leader in customer engagement platforms with a market cap of over $8.5 billion. Prior to leading global customer experience at Twilio, Glenn was co-founder of Appirio, a leading cloud consultancy and top global partner of Salesforce, Workday, and Google. And in this episode, Glenn discusses how to introduce IP into your company, the line between good and bad automation, and delivering on the basics of your customer promise so that you can broach more complex customer needs.Quotes*”There's no fast path to admiral or general in the army. The value of that is not just the respect you get from peers and teams, but also confidence. I would never wanna start my career in a position [that's] too high… You've gotta keep your eye on the goal, [which] is to build experiences and build confidence. The career ladder comes. it will come by you excelling at your job, being a good teammate. But you don't want to come in on day one and be like, ‘How do I make my way to level 3, 4, 5, 6, 7?'”*”Where automation makes people's lives easier, you want it and you wanna push it. You shouldn't have to do anything other than text a message to a number to accomplish something. That's good automation. Then there's bad automation, which is annoying, which is marketing driven and non-consensual. When you're forced to talk to a chatbot instead of a human, because you can just tell they're trying to cut costs. That's an unnatural level of automation. It's not a customer experience-centric way to build.”*”One of the things Twilio talks about all the time is conversations with customers that start out as an automated conversation should be able to seamlessly drift into a live conversation and back, and be recognized as a single thread. That to me is one of the ultimate manifestations of customer engagement, where it crosses channels and feels like a continuous conversation. That's one of the things we preach at Twilio. Customer engagement, meeting customers where they want to be met, not where you want to meet.”*“I kind of think of this as like Maslow's hierarchy of needs translated into technology or for any company. This is a theory that says that if you don't take care of someone's basic needs, you haven't really earned the right to their attention for some higher order stuff. For humans, the basic needs are shelter, food, and oxygen. And now you can start talking about higher level things like fulfillment and satisfaction. So at Twilio, the version of that is the basic needs of our customers. Their messages need to reach their recipients. Their messages need to comply with requirements so they're not blocked or filtered by carriers. You need to be able to send the volume of messages… If we don't take care of those basics, we haven't earned the right to talk about improving your marketing strategy, improving your ROI on customer engagement. All that stuff comes later. And that's really a lot of the Twilio value proposition, but we don't have the right to talk about that until we handle the basics.”Time Stamps[0:16] Introducing Glenn Weinstein, Chief Customer Officer at Twilio[2:51] How did Glenn get started in the tech industry? [4:50] Learn about Glenn's experience in the Naval Academy and how his education there led him into a tech career[8:01] What was it like consulting for Lockheed Martin in the 90s?[10:41] Why having a strong technical background is an advantage as a leader in software companies[12:47] What the Navy taught Glenn about running a SaaS company[14:32] How did Glenn come to co-found Appirio?[17:32] How did Glenn and his co-founders know when it was time to sell Appirio?[20:45] How did Glenn build the skills to run his own business?[25:36] Where is the correct balance between human interaction and automation?[27:21] How do you decide where to experiment in the customer experience?[33:38] Glenn's advice for offering a world class customer experienceBioGlenn represents the voice of the customer, with responsibility for Twilio's technical support, customer success, customer experience, professional services, and systems integrator partner teams. Before Twilio, Glenn was co-founder of Appirio, a leading cloud consultancy and top global partner of Salesforce, Workday, and Google, and he has also led consulting and support teams at numerous public software companies. Priyanka is back this week, joining Mark as we talk big data with our guests Prabhu Palanisamy and Jarrett Garcia. Iron Mountain, a data management company, securely stores hard-copy and online data for enterprise customers. SpringML aides enterprises in the use of data analytics and machine learning to transform their projects. With the help of SpringML and Google Cloud, Iron Mountain migrated much of their data to datalakes and cloud storage for easier access and manipulation of the data. Jarrett and Prabhu talk about the process of migrating so much data, including the main goals of their partnership. First, they established systems that could be repeated and help Iron Mountain understand when data is moved, destroyed, migrated, and more. We discuss the next steps taken, learning how Iron Mountain moved so much data to the cloud. Using Google products like DataFlow, BigQuery, and Cloud Composer, SpringML was able to take the data from Iron Mountain’s landing zone and transform it. Prior planning meant that the system was optimized and ready from the beginning, complete with automation and tools to make a fast, effective migration of data without any restructuring. Later, the data visualization is done by GSuite, Google Data Studio, and Looker so Iron Mountain and their customers can use the data for analysis. Later in the show, Jarrett describes real-life situations in which Iron Mountain has helped manage, migrate, and store data for customers. Prabhu details the lessons SpringML learned while working on this project and offers advice to other developers. He talks about the future of the project, explaining that now that the data has been migrated, more detailed analytics can be performed and machine learning projects added on to augment Iron Mountain’s offerings. Jarrett Garcia Jarrett Garcia recently joined Iron Mountain as the Director of Enterprise Data. At Iron Mountain, Jarrett is working closely with the executive leadership team to build a robust Enterprise Data Platform in the cloud. His partnership with Google Cloud is a critical component to the transformation journey. Before coming to Iron Mountain, Jarrett worked as a Lead Architect at Nielsen within their Technology R&D team to create an AI/ML platform in the cloud. Jarrett has been at the forefront in introducing modern technologies into the organization such as Docker, TensorFlow, and Kubernetes. Before that, he lead the Data Science technology team where he spent over a decade building analytic tools and ushering in new technology. Prabhu Palanisamy Prabhu Palanisamy is co-founder of SpringML. He has a long history of running data-driven consulting organizations from Software AG to Appirio. Building on relationships he created leading integration and analytics services, Prabhu co-founded SpringML, a next generation data analytics company that serves data intensive industries. In this episode of the Startup Selling Podcast, I interviewed Latane Conant.   Latané was instrumental in aligning sales and marketing in her previous position as CMO of Appirio, resulting in 5x more effective field marketing programs and a 300% increase in inbound leads.   Now as the Chief Market Officer of 6sense, Latané empowers revenue teams to compete and win in the age of account-based buying through 6sense’s solution — allowing them to uncover, prioritize, and engage with demand by uniting one common, AI-powered platform.    This allows them to know everything they need to know and do anything they need to do, ultimately generating 40% more opportunities, closing deals 2x faster, and winning 2x more often.    Some of the topics that Latane and I discussed in this episode are:   “The Dark Funnel” – The activity and research your buyers are doing before contacting the seller. Identifying which accounts are “in-market”. “New Inbound” – Get clear on the Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), the buyer’s intent, and focusing your marketing and sales effort on the account that are “in-pocket”. “In-pocket” – problem aware and solution aware.  The importance of demand capture versus demand gen. The value card and how you create content for the different buyers. The importance of using video and how you can create quick content.  How to leverage AI to create an amazing customer experience. The importance of orchestrating to create a positive experience for your buyer. The importance of the “next best action” with your prospects. Racial inequality and improvements we can all be making when it comes to diversity within our teams, customers, and community. Links & Resources   Rapid Adoption. In this episode I caught up with Justin Anderson who leads sales for enterprise customers and accounts in Northern Europe on behalf of DocuSign. Prior to joining DocuSign in June 2019, Justin was on the implementation side of tech, where he was general manager for Appirio, a global services company that helps customers innovate and win in the new cloud economy. Justin believes the current Covid-19 pandemic is leading some companies to prepare for the future and get ahead now.He also understands how important it is to have partners like SYKE and others that can help companies embed and configure the technology in the right way first time, so they get the most value out of it. Having run a systems integrator himself (he implemented technology for five years) Justin thinks anyone that works in this industry should actually gain experience implementing, because you realise that although it's important to have great technology such as DocuSign, the way you really drive the best outcome is through the services that implement it. It's all about change. It's all about process. It's all about enablement, making sure that people don't just have the technology, but they know how to use it. So how you manage that process, how you manage the implementation, how you get it adopted and successful, and get the return on investment, that only happens by having an experienced, qualified implementation partner. Tune in to hear what else he had to say.

Chris Barbin is a serial entrepreneur and investor with more than 25 years of experience across a number of startups, companies, and enterprises. Chris joins the show today to talk with us about his work as a Venture Partner at GGV Capital, how he co-founded Appirio and stayed on as Chief Culture Officer when it was acquired from Wipro. Chris is an expert on company culture, team building and what it takes to scale a business. He also gives advice on building strong relationships when people work remotely, the upsides and downsides of being incredibly transparent, and how to create an environment where people feel safe to talk about the important stuff.   Key Takeaways [3:27] Chris was born and raised outside of Boston and graduated from Bates College, of which he now sits on the Board of Trustees. He landed in Chicago and was in various tech and consulting gigs before he co-founded Appirio in 2006. [8:26] While others were experiencing hardships in the economy around 2007, Appirio found that their company provided a value around organizations saving money moving to the cloud. [11:49] Chris and the other founders of Appirio were in different cities when they founded the company, so they started with a mentality of creating great work from remote locations. They decided that instead of having a huge business office, they would connect to the right people using world-class processes and systems. They also started with a great amount of transparency where workers could see everything in a consumer-grade type of environment. [15:21] Chris and the founders of Appirio grew in a distributed way and set their workers up with the tools that they needed for a great work environment at home. [16:42] Remote culture can get much of the work done, but there still needs to be a level of in-person connectivity. Appirio put time into culture-building both virtually using Facetime, photos, and videos, and made the most of their quarterly in-person meetings. [21:02] Appirio had an all-hands meeting every two weeks virtually, and senior leaders met once a week virtually and once a quarter in person. They also displayed their commitment to transparency through time for a Q&A, where any question was fair game. [26:52] One of Chris’s biggest lessons was in growing your team from within, as compared to upgrading them from the outside in. [31:34] The leadership team has a responsibility to not always engage in “happy talk,” but to really focus on making things better and pulling the bad things out so they can be talked about and solutions can be provided. [35:52] After the acquisition from Wipro, Chris stayed on as Chief Culture Officer to help catalyze and stimulate the culture. With a number of 2,500 employees sitting inside of 180,000 employees in 55 countries, Chris and his team had their work cut out for them. [42:40] Chris is also an operating partner at Thunderboss (a lakeside bar and grill in Green Lake, WI that he built and opened with his wife in 2018), as well as two tequila businesses — SipTequila.com (a premium tequila business focused on a direct to consumer model) and Compoveda (his own private label tequila).   Resources: Purchase Bring Your Whole Self to Work and gain access to bonus material Mike Robbins Website Mike Robbins Podcast Mike Robbins on Facebook Mike Robbins on Twitter Mike Robbins on Instagram TED Radio Hour GG Capital Venture Firm Sip TequilaCompoveda ThunderBoss Wipro Appirio Chris Barbin

How do you develop young leaders and entrepreneurs in this fast-paced world? What is the power of investing and building multi-million dollar companies? Jeff Richards sits down with Christopher Lochhead to answer these questions and discuss why it's smart to invest in China and Silicon Valley. "There's 7.3 billion people in the world. There's only 300 million in the US. So if your market opportunity is 300 million, you're missing the other 95% of the world." - Jeff Richards Three Things We Learned It's tough for kids these days Because kids have access to social media at an early age, they have a broader preview of the world out there compared to generations past. While it's very encouraging for them to find ways to become successful apart from the traditional get-educated-land-a-job scheme, being exposed to these things as a teenager can be a pitfall. They're hit with the pressure to be creative, innovative, and get together with the right crowd early, existential crises adults back then would often encounter not until after college. Pace of play nowadays is fast Technological advancements have made it quicker to build businesses and make them successful. However, with this quick pacing comes the added pressure that trickles down to entrepreneurs who are throwing so much into the fire in very little time in order to keep up. They have no time to catch a break, and risk many other aspects of their lives because of the swift turnover of things in the tech industry. We need to go back to building brick by brick The satisfaction of building a product with a great foundation springing from doing it right can't be undermined. People need to learn how to build businesses brick by brick, painstaking piece by painstaking piece. We need to slow down and revel the process of becoming successful. So much is going on in the tech world right now that people are compelled to constantly pit themselves into the fray. We must pause and zoom out of the small corner of the world that we're building in order to gain true insights of the world at large. If we're not trying to glean and learn as much as we can, then all our efforts and money will easily go up in smoke. Bio / Story:  Jeff Richards  A Managing Partner at GGV Capital, Jeff joined the firm in 2008 after spending 13 years as an entrepreneur and operating executive in the US and Asia. Prior to joining GGV, Jeff founded two venture-backed companies, one a success and one a “huge failure” in his own words – “I learned a lot.”   His background as an entrepreneur gives him a unique perspective on the challenges of starting and running a venture-backed company, and he works closely with the GGV Talent team on Founders+Leaders.  Jeff focuses on the Software and Internet sectors, and currently sits on the boards of or is a board observer at BigCommerce, one of the top ecommerce software platforms, Boxed, a rising star in the ecommerce space, Brightwheel, the leading SaaS provider for the early education vertical, Gladly, a next generation SaaS platform for customer care, Percolate, a leading marketing SaaS platform for global brands,PlushCare, a mobile platform for consumer healthcare, Reebonz, Southeast Asia's leader in luxury ecommerce, Slice, a market network for the pizza industry, and Tile, the platform for location. Elizabeth Friedland is the Senior Director of Corporate Communications for Appirio, a global tech consultancy. She's spent more than 12 years in the public relations and communications world, working in both Indianapolis, where she currently lives, and New York. Outside the office, Friedland writes, directs, and produces award-winning short films. She is also an advocate for foster care; in addition to being a proud foster mother to five children since 2015, Elizabeth is a member of the Foster Success Leadership Council, part of the nonprofit Connected by 25, an organization dedicated to providing the financial, educational and social support to assist Indiana youth as they age out of the foster care system.    I was so excited for this interview because I have been thinking a lot about foster parenting in recent months.  I am also so intrigued by Elizabeth’s decision to do this as a single woman.  I learned so much in this interview, from the logistics of fostering to the emotional challenges of raising a child for a period of time and then sending them off to someone else for permanent placement.     I know you are going to adore Elizabeth as much as I did.  I can’t wait for you to hear her story.  I hope she inspires you to consider fostering or sharing this story with someone else who might be in a position to foster.  Please to share this episode!   Listen in to hear Elizabeth share: What inspired her to become a foster parent as a single woman What is required to become a foster parent How she got started fostering and what the first year looked like with 5 different babies Her different relationships with the biological families of her foster babies How her most recent placement has changed her heart and what she’s doing about it The myths and truths about fostering How you can get involved with foster kids without committing to being a foster parent   Links Mentioned: Elizabeth’s Blog: http://elizabethfriedlandwrites.tumblr.com/ Elizabeth on Twitter: @efriedland Elizabeth’s Podcast: Single Mom Fostering Book: Another Place At the Table SMA Episode 20: Jillian Mitchell - Foster Adoption and Finding Your Family

#TChat Radio is all new on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at 7:30 pm ET (4:30 pm PT). There are many different flavors related to the term "software as a service" (SaaS) in business today. It's part of the cloud computing nomenclature -- "clouding" this and "clouding" that making everything more accessible with reduced long-term hardware, software and networking costs. So what about Talent as a Service (TaaS) or Humans as a Service (HuaaS)? How exactly would that work? Got you thinking, didn't it. According to one of this week's guests, Richie Etwaru, "a more humanistic, people-centric view of the 'as a Service' phenomena extends Everything as a Service to 'Everyone as a Service.'" What we're really talking about is on-demand talent in the cloud, the ability for anyone or any company to source individual talent and groups of talent for anything, at any time, for any kind of work and frequency, in any interation and/or for any ideation. On some levels this already happens with sourcing contingent workers globally via freelance sites and other services. But can that ever scale effectively and efficiently for the enterprise as well as smaller companies and consultancies? That's what we're going to talk about this week on this week on #TChat Radio and Twitter #TChat with our guests Jason Averbook, long-time HR thought leader and Chief Business Innovation Officer at Appirio, and Richie Etwaru, Group Vice President of Cloud and Digital Innovation at Cegedim Relationship Management. We hope to see you here!

The three hottest IT trends aren’t generating noise without reason – huge companies are empowering their organizations with efficient, agile and valuable cloud-based services and IT systems. Enterprises without a cloud computing strategy, at least one of Apple’s many mobile devices lying around or some type of corporate social network are becoming few and far between. Appirio co-founder Narinder Singh will discuss how his company helps large enterprises unshackle business applications from servers – and shift it to mobile devices, social networks and the public cloud.
