Oil prices drop to 4-year lows as OPEC+ agrees to hike output. Why one top energy analyst sees crude crumbling to $40 per barrel before pumping higher. A barrage of tariffs are foisted onto the automotive marketplace and throw a wrench into the car importing business (including Derek's OTS and Co.). Are used cars affected? Not even ChatGPT knows. Jason wants to file a class action suit against VW for sunsetting 3G functionality in Mk7 cars, and Jay Leno puts his name behind California SB 712 to reduce the smog check burden on California-based classic car owners. We'll start off with 1980s turbocharged lag-mobiles: the Saab 99 Turbo, BMW 2002 Turbo, and Porsche 930. At the time, Lotus deemed this power curve and response time unacceptable and managed to create a significantly better turbocharged experience in the Esprit Turbo. So good in fact that it may be on par with the W124 Mercedes-Benz 300E with a Mosselman twin-turbo setup that Jason recently drove. Next, Jason thinks a class action lawsuit is in order against VW of America. That's because after 3G cell networks were shut down in 2022, VW failed to maintain the functionality of its Car-Net app that allowed for remote lock/unlock, cabin pre-heating, break-in alerts, charging start/stop and automatic crash notifications. Now, 3 years later, VW has admitted defeat, and has told owners that no fix will be provided. This is quite different from Tesla's approach, who called in owners and upgraded their modems to run on the newer networks. Derek also notes the class action lawsuit against Mercedes when it was discovered that the clear coat on their Mars Red paint didn't last. Then we dive into the tariff chaos. Mainly the 25% tax on all imported automobiles, which may be permanent like the “chicken tax” on imported trucks, or it may last a few hours? Does it apply to used vehicles? No one is sure. But Derek wasn't waiting around to find out when OTS was facing a $700,000 duty on a car it was actively importing for a client. Ronald Reagan briefly weighs in on the effectiveness of tariffs, and EU-allergic Switzerland enters the chat. Plus Ford and Mercedes-Benz both have extensive experience evading tariffs from their time importing non-tariffed “passenger” vans into the States, only to have their technicians immediately convert them into cargo trucks by removing the seats and windows then shipping the pieces back to Europe for the next batch. We'll also cover various shipping methods (container vs "RoRo") as both Derek and Jason have experienced shipping cars overseas – both Derek's W116 and W124 wagon made the voyage across the Atlantic, as did Jason's E30 Touring and 190E 2.3-16. We'll talk Boeing 747 8F cargo planes, RoRo cargo ships, 20- and 40-foot containers, and all of their associated pros, cons and costs. We'll also dive into the used car market and recent auction results. Why are similar cars fetching wildly different prices at major auctions and on websites like Bring A Trailer? Derek and Jason both weigh in on the factors at play, including two recent BMW 850CSi sales. Lastly, we'll touch on California SB712, now nicknamed Leno's Law. A new law working its way through the California legislature that aims to reduce the smog check burden on classic car owners and collectors (as well as the repair shops burdened with maintaining dynamometers for a dwindling pool of cars requiring one for proper smog testing). TESLA DROPS PRICES OF MODEL 3 BY AS MUCH AS 24% "Tesla (TSLA) cut the price of its base variants of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y sports utility vehicle but raised the prices for performance models in the U.S. Tesla stock fell. The Model 3 Standard Range Plus is $1,000 cheaper at $36,990, while a Model Y Standard Range costs $2,000 less and is priced at $39,990. But the prices for the Performance variant of the Model 3 and Y each rose $1,000. The Model 3 now costs $55,990 and Model Y rose to $60,990." says INvestors.com "In Japan, the base price of the standard version of a Model 3 was cut to 4.29 million yen, which is about $40,500. The long-range version now goes for 4.99 million yen or $47,200. Tesla hopes the price cuts will spur sales in Japan, where it sold fewer than 2,000 cars last year. Why? Forthcoming tax credit? Increasing competition? Market share? Electrek coment from Eric: In Vermont, the $2500 state tax credit applies to vehicles with a base model under $40,000. Before today, only the Model 3 qualified (as well as the VW iD.4, but not the Ford Mustang-e). After today, the Model Y now qualifies for the state credit. Even if you purchase a higher priced model. I wonder how many other states have a $40,000 base cap? That might be the reason to drop the base vehicle but not the more popular LR AWD version. User NeverFollow: The $40k Model Y SR includes Premium Interior so it is even a better deal than the $37k Model 3 SR+, also the Model Y SR can have a tow hitch. The Premium Interior has LED fog lamps and Premium Audio (14 speakers, 1 subwoofer, 2 amps). Anyway $1,000 when you need to spend $40,000 don't make a big difference. https://twitter.com/teslamotorsjp/status/1361939264716427265?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1361939264716427265%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdriveteslacanada.ca%2Fmodel-3%2Ftesla-drops-prices-model-3-japan-by-as-much-as-24%2F https://www.investors.com/news/tesla-stock-model-3-model-y-prices-slashed-amid-ev-competition/?src=A00220 ALL-ELECTRIC VOLVO XC RECHARGE CONFIRMED FOR AUSTRALIA IN MID-2021 "The XC40 Recharge Pure Electric will be launched in Australia in August, Volvo’s Australian arm has confirmed. Instead, it acts as a generator, providing charge to a small battery, which then sends energy to the electric motor. According to Nissan, this gives the e-Power unit characteristics we’ve come to expect from fully electric vehicles, such as instant torque delivery and seamless acceleration." "Nissan is in line with current mainstream thinking in not offering a diesel engine. Instead, buyers, leasers and PCP-ers can choose from a 1.3-litre mild-hybrid and a range-extender hybrid called e-Power." says Car magazine: "This innovative drivetrain option is set to roll out in the Qashqai in 2022. It's a traditional hybrid in that there's no plug-in option. It's a parallel hybrid set-up where the engine is effectively a generator used to charge the battery pack, which then powers the electric motor to drive the wheels. Nissan says the e-Power Qashqai will enjoy the throttle response of an EV and even comes with Nissan's 'e-Pedal' technology that first debuted on the Mk2 Nissan Leaf. Backing off the throttle will deliver up to 0.2g of regenerative deceleration. The 1.5-litre petrol engine in the E-Power version features a variable compression ratio and is tuned for maximum efficiency when delivering charge to the battery pack. " "The e-Power techology has been seen on Japan-only Note superminis but it is the first time it has been introduced in Europe. Nissan has beefed up the system for the Qashqai, though." says Sunday Times Driving "The other two powertrain options available for the new Qashqai are both 1.3-litre petrols with mild hybrid technology. "Designer Matt Weaver said the shift to electrified-only powertrains influenced the new Qashqai’s styling because it necessitated a heightened focus on aerodynamics, highlighting the front-end’s vertical air channels and the car's slightly tapered shape as a key differentiator over the previous, non-electrified car." according to Autocar: "Chosen to offer greater affordability over a 48V system, the 12V set-up recovers energy under deceleration to power on-board systems when the engine is stopped and provide a small torque boost when accelerating." Whatcar wasn't impressed by the engine: "Unusually for a range extender, the e-Power’s pure electric range is tiny – just 1.8 miles – meaning the engine has to run most of the time, instead of just being there as a back-up. But Nissan claims that it’s able to run at lower revs than the engine in a conventional hybrid when starting up and accelerating, making it quieter and more efficient; official fuel economy figures are still to be announced." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/nissan/qashqai/103735/new-2021-nissan-qashqai-revealed-hybrid-powertrain https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/nissan/qashqai/ https://www.driving.co.uk/news/new-cars/nissan-reveals-2021-qashqai-suv/ https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/all-electrified-2021-nissan-qashqai-brings-bold-new-look https://www.whatcar.com/news/2021-nissan-qashqai-revealed-full-details-and-exclusive-pics/n22676 https://europe.nissaanews.com/en-GB/releases/all-new-nissan-qashqai TEXAS FORD F-150 HYBRID OWNERS USING GENERATOR FUNCTIONS TO WEATHER THE STORM "With Texas, the biggest truck market in the country, currently in the middle of a nasty winter storm and subsequent widespread power outages, we've been wondering if anyone has put the generator capabilities of the 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid to the test. The answer is, unsurprisingly, yes. A few users at F150Gen14.com shared photos and experiences using the generator function, and they're all rather glowing." says Autoblog: "The truck's large fuel tank meant he could run it a long time without refueling, which could have been an issue as local gas pumps weren't working. We would bet that the truck also produces far fewer emissions than those outdoor generators, too. All of these owners said they had purchased the hybrid with the upgraded 7.2-kW generator capability, though all hybrids come standard with 2.4-kW generator ability." PLus: "Ford asks Texas dealers to loan out F-150s with ProPower onboard generators". And those with home storage such as Tesla Powerwalls and other brands have also found how invaluable home storage can me. The Honda E has an 1.5kW AC socket to tap into it's 35.5kWh battery. https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/18/2022-ford-f150-powerboost-hybrid-generator-texas-winter-blackout/ https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/powerboost-7-2kw-onboard-generator-saves-the-day-3-days-during-texas-power-outage.1826/ BENTLEY TO OFFER ONLY ELECTRIC OR HYBRID CARS BY 2026 "Electrification is becoming more commonplace within car manufacturers as we near the deadline for the UK government's ban on the sale of all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 - and Bentley is no exception." says Drivetribe: "The high-end automaker has this week announced that it is concentrating on researching and developing sustainable and recyclable electric motors, in a bid to assist the legislatorial requirement for automakers to cease production of petrol and diesel cars from 2030 in order to avoid any hefty fines coming their way. As it stands, Bentley are due to release PHEV versions of the much-loved Continental GT and the status symbol that is of course, the Flying Spur. We also continue to wait in anticipation of Bentley announcing it's first fully-electric model in 2025 - hopefully the EXP 100 GT will be looked back in history as something exemplar in having changed the course of the design for Bentley's future models." https://drivetribe.com/p/bentley-to-offer-only-electric-eJUzXojwTUyEd-0xi4l8ag https://www.bentley-press.be/bentley-sets-out-path-to-sustainable-recyclable-electric-motors NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK With my 1000th podcast around the corner, what kind of media coverage do you want in 2021?
