To record an episode about Hamnet, the new film from Chloe Zhao, or not to record an episode about Hamnet? That was the question – and a question I answered in a heartbeat when Chloe's team reached out late last year about chatting with the Nomadland writer-director. The historical drama, starring Jesse Buckley and Paul Mescal, takes viewers inside the anguish of William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes Hathaway, after the death of one of their children in 1596. In the movie, Shakespeare throws himself into his work as part of his mourning process, resulting in one of the best-loved and most influential plays of all time. In doing so, though, Agnes is left alone with just ghosts, grief and her remaining children – themselves angry and confused at Hamnet's death – for company. Adapted from an acclaimed novel by Irish author Maggie O'Farrell, who joined Chloe and I for our conversation, the film is as emotionally bruising as they come. It's a tale about parenthood, personhood, how storytellers process pain through their art and what it means to witness that. The film ends with this remarkable final scene shot at London's historic Globe Theatre in which Shakespeare has transmuted his pain into a play that both pours salt into the deepest imaginable wound for Agnes, and seemingly offers her some closure. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, the three of us get into the evolution of that moment, and other key scenes from a film that won Best Drama and Best Actress for Buckley at the Golden Globes and is expected to be in the mix at this year's Oscars. Walk along Stowell Street in Newcastle upon Tyne and turn into St Andrew's Street, and you might notice a plaque on the wall. It marks the site of the house where Tyneside bard Joe Wilson was born - though it's unclear how many people know who Joe Wilson is. There was a resurgence of interest in the 19th-century songwriter a few years ago, particularly thanks to the musical play, The Great Joe Wilson, that toured the north east in 2018. Mary Hartman, the director of education at Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival in Vancouver, BC, Canada, shares her philosophy for Shakespeare education and its emphasis on play. Mary reveals why threads is a better term than themes; how Shakespeare's plays should not be poetry readings; how she's developed the Discovery Zone, an extensive free resource for both students and educators; and how so much of Shakespeare's power is not just in his words, but in the relationship of actors to each other and to the audience. NOTE: This conversation was recorded the night before we learned Tina Packer, the Founding Artistic Director of Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts and an acclaimed director, actor, writer, and teacher, died at the age of 87. Jeffrey Epstein's connection to Leon Botstein centers on Epstein's financial ties to Bard College, where Botstein has served as longtime president. There was early interest in "Hamnet" from the LAMB community when the schedule first went out, but two guests had to drop out of the show a day before recording and an SOS went out for replacements. Fortunately the call was answered and Rachel Wagner of "Rachel's Reviews" came in and did the work of two to make the show more complete. Of course returning LAMB Latoya Austin from "Frangalis27Tales", was just as invested in talking about this highly praised fictionalization of the circumstances in Shakespeare's life which led to the greatest play in history.  There are a few rabbit holes that we go down as we talk about the film, but rest assured, the amazing Jessie Buckley comes in for a deserved amount of praise for her starring turn as the Bard's largely unknown spouse. The Bard of East Nashville passed away last week at the age of 59.  We are re-airing his episode of the podcast which was originally published in March of 2020.
