Episode 56: The Earth Caretaker Way Origin Story with Tim Corcoran In this episode and the four-part follow on, I'm going to take my podcast in what I hope you will experience as an innovative new direction. Nearly 20 years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Tim Corcoran, leader, and owner of the Headwaters Outdoor School near Mount Shasta in California, who has just released a new book called The Earth Caretaker Way. 30+ years in the making, Tim with co-author Julie Boettler, have synthesized the essence of all of their learnings and teachings into an absorbing guide filled with stories to tell around the campfire or in a meadow. The Earth Caretaker Way is designed so that you can choose your own adventure by opening up to any page and do as Tim often says, Walk Backwards into the Future and Remember What We Already Know. But The Earth Caretaker Way isn't just a book, we want it to become the beginning of a global movement. A movement designed to amplify this knowledge, reconnect with our past through nature and use that wisdom to personally help heal the earth and reverse some of the negative impacts of climate change. In this episode I'll be focusing on Tim's origin story and then explore at a high level his views on Nature Awareness, Wilderness Living Skills, the keys to opening your heart through learnings about Earth Philosophy and lastly how to integrate the Earth Caretaker Way into your life through a Life of Service to the Earth. This show is for you if you're aware of our multiple crises, feel your love for life on earth, and care about cultivating ways of life we can believe in, making a life-honoring present, even in the face of an uncertain future. Hosted by Leilani Navar, facilitator of the Work that Reconnects, acupuncturist, herbalist and dreamworker.Today's conversation is with Tim Corcoran, who runs Headwaters Outdoor School in Mt. Shasta, California. Tim has been helping transform lives for 30 years, by bringing children and adults to the camp there, teaching nature awareness, wilderness skills, and earth philosophy. He's written a new book called The Earth Caretaker Way, co-written with Julie Boettler.Tim traces his own connection to Earth peoples philosophy to his Irish heritage, as taught to him by his uncle and grandfather. He knew at 6 years old that the woods were his home, and at seventeen he spent four months alone in the Canadian Wilderness practicing Earth living skills. Tim began a career teaching wildlife conservation in 1974. During this time, he learned how to communicate with the spirits of the animals he worked with, enhancing his abilities to connect on an intimate level with them.He has worked at the Alberta Game Farm in Alberta, Canada as an animal caretaker, the Crandon Park Zoo in Miami Florida as an animal relocation director, and Marine World Africa U.S.A. as a chimpanzee and elephant trainer. (You may have glimpsed Tim and his elephant in Star Wars, where he was a Tuskan raider on the back of his elephant, costumed as a bantha.) Tim co-founded the Native Animal Rescue in Santa Cruz, California, rescuing and releasing injured wildlife. He created Headwaters Outdoor School in Mount Shasta, California in 1992, to realize his lifelong vision of sharing what he has learned from nature, and to inspire people to discover their own personal relationship with nature. Tim teaches outdoor living skills, and Earth Philosophy to kids and adults.Tim is also an accomplished professional nature photographer and has published a series of nature photography books highlighting sacred places in nature. Tim has recently founded The Earth Caretaker Way Movement LLC, with the intention of uniting a global community of Earth Caretakers to save wild spaces, and create wildlife refuge within every environment, including urban settings. Tim lives with his wife, Jean, and their pack of dogs on an amazing refuge of wooded land in Mount Shasta, California where he runs Headwaters Outdoor School and The Earth Caretaker Way Movement.Show notes: turningseason.com/episode39
In this episode of A Witch, A Mystic & A Feminist, Marlena is joined by return guest, Kristine Daizy, and special guest, Tim Corcoran. When Tim Corcoran walks into a room, you can almost feel the forest enter with him. His life's work, dedicated to the Earth's stewardship, unfolds in our latest episode as he shares his transformative journey and the inception of his Headwaters Outdoor School. Through heartfelt stories, he transports us to the Canadian wilderness, reveals his spiritual awakening at Mount Shasta, and shows that the land itself can be our greatest teacher. Tim's narrative is a vivid tapestry, intertwining his profound encounters with nature's signs, like the wolf that led him to his school's grounds, and the hawk's feather that affirmed his life's path.Sowing the seeds of environmental mindfulness starts with a single step, and this episode highlights the simple acts that cultivate a deeper connection to the Earth. Tim and I discuss the power of transforming personal spaces into wildlife sanctuaries and making eco-conscious choices in our daily lives. The conversation blossoms with the shared belief that fostering these connections can ripple out to effect meaningful global change. We reflect on my earlier work and the parallels found in Tim's upcoming book, "The Earth Caretaker Way," underscoring a universal call to become stewards of our planet.Concluding our inspiring exchange, we celebrate the collaborative effort behind "The Earth Caretaker Way," crafted by Tim himself and Julie Boettler. This isn't just a book; it's a vessel for a movement, with intentions to funnel proceeds into land conservation and education. As we talk about the transformative classes offered at Headwaters Outdoor School and its evolution into a hub for earth caretakers, Tim's vision for a legacy of environmental guardianship becomes clear. His hope, and ours, is to ignite a passion within listeners to join this collective mission for a greener, more conscious future. You can learn more about Tim Corcoran and Headwaters Outdoor School at https://hwos.com/walker-hupp-fund/.And you can learn more about the book, The Earth Caretaker Way on their Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/earthcaretakerway/Medical Disclaimer Have questions or comments for A Witch, A Mystic & A Feminist? If you're like us, then you have a deep desire to live your life well, and in order to live our life well we must be intentional, committed, and pure of heart in our skillset development for the Arc of Wellness. This is where we gather, apply, and most importantly embody the knowledge and information from those wise elders and teachers who came before us such that then we can choose to combine it with our own life experience that becomes our own earned and unique wisdom that we can share for long after we're gone. Death As A Teacher: Honoring Christian Oliver This is a really potent podcast because I know it's going to feed a part of you if you have ever gone through a grieving process, or lost a loved one, or lost someone unexpectedly, there is a healthy grieving process. That healthy grieving process includes a sacred reminder of how we all get to choose to live and that is my intention of what I'm going to explore with you gently and also heartfelt today in this solocast...I'm sure you've seen the news that my brother Christian Oliver and his two daughters were tragically killed in a plane crash just days ago and I've been in grieving, in processing ever since I heard about the news. Christian and I bonded so deeply about our work, lives, children, and women in our shared Vision Quest with Mark Tollefson and Tim Corcoran in 2022 in Santa Barbara, Quail Springs California. We both shared a desire to have understanding and softness and integration of the feminine inside of us, and most importantly, to understand the women that we love. It was a deep learning curve for both of us in this lifetime, and I could feel Christian's pain around his ex-wife, and even learning lessons with his current girlfriend where I also had my lessons with my lady as well... The Reality of Choice Because this is the reality of choice that we are all (every day) choosing to either feed our vitality and wellness or we are choosing to starve it. Part of feeding our vitality is being present and in acceptance to recognize that we all must die. I'm going through this grieving process when someone we love dies. My friend Tim Corcoran of Purpose Mountain, with whom I've done (2) Vision Quests and, who has led me through so much of his own shared wisdom in quest said in an email recently: "What can you learn from Christian's death? It immediately reminds me of how short and precious life is, and reminds me to live fully and unapologetically! To live my vision! To live this day as if it were my last, "Hoka Hey, today is a good day to die!" the old Lakota warriors would say. Christian's last post on social media was a short one that said, "Let love rule. Wishing all of you the best for 2024!" How can we honor these last words? What does it mean to "let love rule" in your life? For me, it invites me further into forgiveness (for both myself and others), self-care, discipline to do what is right, and courage to live my vision. What does it mean to live the best life possible in this new year of 2024 here on Earth? I believe that doing so truly honors our brother. Pray for Christian, that his spirit can indeed travel back to the good, bright ancestors, right beside his two precious daughters. Pray for Christian's family, especially his wife who I can only imagine must be going through an enormous process of grief right now. Remember that prayer has real power and that your prayers truly make a difference to the living and the dead. Pray for him the way you would want to be prayed for if you had passed." So yes, death is not something that we need to ruminate on, but it is something that is a powerful ally to reflect on daily or weekly because it is this reminder that we all die that allows us to choose to fully live. So this may or may not be the perfect place for you to start and to subscribe with Wellness + Wisdom. I know that you saw the title and you're here with us for a reason, and that you already know today's podcast is about honoring a dear friend who has died and what lessons we all can learn from the way that he chose to live. What Is Death, Really? It may seem on one side of the coin that death is the removal of life or the absence of life. I could sit here and try to wax poetic and use my intellect to describe what I think death is but we all know that science (and really our egoic mind) can't really describe it. Because in the same way that science can't describe exactly why there's a burst of light when the egg in the womb of a mother is fertilized by the seed of a father, or why the SA node beats in the heart of us all... ...there is a divine mystery that has its own timeline, its own essence, and its own direction that we all must surrender to if we are to choose to live our lives well. If we choose to fight against this divine mystery, we age faster, we suffer deeper, and we don't live our lives as well as we can... if we don't choose to surrender to God's will. It's this (painful and difficult at times) surrender to the mystery of God and to the will of our creator, the being that created us and all things, that we can actually go through a personal process of grieving so that we can come out with our light on the other side of it all. There is a deep sadness in death, and there is also paradoxically a deep well of gratitude that is created in all of our hearts when someone we love leaves the earth. The message coming from my heart to share with you today is how death teaches us about generosity; how can we learn from the people who have died so that we can have generosity in our hearts, in the same way, they showed us was possible? Spiritual Bypassing True story I wanted to share right away, because I realize it's a service to all of us, where we may tend to spiritually bypass or "rush to the lesson" without feeling the pain of learning. I realized that I was recently (just a few days ago) trying to sit and record this podcast so that I could honestly stop feeling the pain in my heart and get right to the lesson of "why God has taken Christian and his two daughters from this earth?" I realized it was my ego trying to run from my own grief and my own anger and sadness about the loss of my friend Christian. So today I finally feel as ready as I can be to share; and not that I'm prepared to let go, but that I'm in the process of letting go. Again, as Tim said in the very last post of his life on Christians's Instagram, the last resounding message he shared with us he said: Christian, my brother it feels so surreal, and I can't imagine the pain that the mother of your children is going through… I'm sending you and the family, my deepest, heartfelt love, and I know there's nothing that I could say that would assuage the bereavement of those who love you, including me. This is also very special because this podcast is being released on January 11, 2024, which is in numerology a designation of an angel number, so anytime you see three ones in a row... The Angel Number 111 111 is often seen as a powerful and positive number that signifies alignment, new beginnings, and spiritual awakening, it is a message encouraging you to pay attention to your thoughts and focus on maintaining a positive mindset, even in the face of tragedy, what can we learn and how can we move forward using this special day? The repetition of the number 1 three times suggests that our thoughts and intentions are heightened at this time. According to numerology, the 111 angel number is a way for a guardian angel to get your attention, not for you to forget, but for you and I to forgive yourself or others. The 111 means that these guardian angels are giving you the power to leave your past behind. Christian and his daughters I believe are now guardian angels for those whom they would like to connect with. And I would like to say, but the reality is, I do not know... none of us know what's beyond... that Christian is watching us now, looking over how we handle this loss and this grief. And realize that Christian is there, and he is watching us and he's reminding us to live! He's reminding us to live in the way that he did with the ultimate generosity of his energy, time, and spirit. Christian taught us to LIVE. I was talking with my friend and Vision Quest guide Mark Tollefson, who has been a guest on the podcast, and in our conversation with tears, he shared with me wisdom of Carlos Castaneda: Don't Let The 4th Enemy In Castaneda talks about the four enemies of the man of knowledge, for a person who lives an examined life and learns through various stages of personal awareness, connection, and ego dissolution. He explains that a man of knowledge must overcome sequential challenges. The first is fear, the second is clarity the third is power, and the fourth is old age, or death. The ultimate adversary, according to Castaneda, is old age. Christian's death has put a spotlight on my mortality and all of our mortality and the fact that we all die as a reminder to be honest about the way we are truly living. The conclusive and harshest foe that inevitably confronts us all is old age and death. Our potential for glory, the opportunity to embody completeness in the odyssey of what Castaneda calls this "knowledgeable individual" hinges on persisting through the challenges of aging and (this is the key) resisting the allure of repose, apathy, and complacency. After grappling with fear, attaining clarity, and mastering the wielding of power, in the fourth enemy of old age and death there may be a temptation to believe that everything has been achieved, leading to a choice to simply rest and withdraw. Yet, it is during this ultimate pinnacle of self-actualization (this 4th stage) that it becomes crucial to stay fervently connected to life. This echoes the wisdom of Buddhists who proclaim: "Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water." So today, how are we chopping wood and carrying water in the way that we are living a generous life? How can we honor the life of Christian and his daughters, and all of those who have left the earth by choosing generosity? By opening our hearts, even when we are in pain, by not letting our past pain dictate our present potential? By choosing to love ourselves, and to do our deepest work, so that we can show up for the people in our lives, and pour the love we have for ourselves onto them? That is our work and that is our that is our quest here on earth and as a human being. A human being that cares deeply about Wellness and well-being. That is my deepest work: to not let complacency ever set in and to be generous with my heart above all else. Honoring Christian Oliver Christian lived with generosity, his smile, his heart, his time, his energy, his acting, and his expression. All of these things poured out of him from a place of love... And he wasn't perfect because no human being ever is, but what brings me solace is one of the last things he shared with his beloved of three years whose name is Taylor. He told her that he understood what it was to "truly have unconditional love for someone" and that was her. What a gift he received from her. It is what all of us deserve and it makes my heart so happy that he got to experience that before he left. And although tragic, and so deeply painful to which there is no timeline of exactly how long it will hurt, possibly, and most likely forever. One thing I have is that I will always remember Christian's smile, and his generosity as a way for me to live generously in my life. Because this is the ultimate lesson from Christian life: how can we be generous with our our time and our energy? How can we live our lives with an open heart no matter what challenges we go through? How can we live our life so that we do not let the enemy win, that we do not let old age win, no matter how old we are? That we lived, and we danced, and we made love, and we shared from our hearts because one day we all will die. Becoming More Conscious: What Death Teaches Us About Living A Generous Life And how can we become conscious of the fact that none of these things that we stressed so deeply about were anything other than God teaching us and directing us towards how we can live with more love? I want to pray for Christian and his daughters in this moment, and let you know that we miss you. We love you, and we thank you for being our teacher, for teaching us how to love and be generous with our love, because it is through that generosity, that we touch the hearts of others, so that they may touch the hearts of those that they love. It is this loving generosity that creates a ripple in this cosmic soup... This is what cuts through the demonic energy and the negativity in the world. This cosmic lake that we are all in together. May we learn from Christian, may we embody this lesson. God may you allow us to live with this generosity in our hearts, from this day forward. We are loved, we are supported, and we are on the right path. May the generosity of the heart guide you and I now, and forever. Christian, I pray that you hear me on the other side and that you know from my heart: We love you, we see you and we cherish you. I am wishing you and your daughters and all of us love and wellness. In the hustle and bustle of our modern lives, we often get caught up in the daily grind and forget to prioritize ourselves. It's so easy to lose sight of what truly brings us joy and fulfillment. But picture this: a life where we're no longer held captive by our own unconscious thoughts and behaviors. A life where we can tap into those hidden parts of ourselves that hold the key to happiness, beauty, and a sense of playfulness. This week On This Walk, I welcome back Tim Corcoran – previously on Episodes 15 & 16 – as we discuss the benefits of parts work and the ecology of self, and how it can help you rediscover your unique path to true freedom. Tim shares his personal experience with parts work and how it has transformed his life, emphasizing the importance of understanding and loving all parts of ourselves, even the destructive ones. The conversation also touches on how to discover your purpose through vulnerability, stillness, and connecting with nature and the importance of judgment as a tool for self-growth. In This Episode (06:17) How parts work transformed Tim's life (06:28) Three primary benefits of parts work (10:05) What is parts work and the ecology of self (12:55) The invention of the practice of voice dialogue (16:17) The power of identity formation through the use of "I am" statements (23:23) Understanding and loving destructive parts (25:07) Reclaiming vulnerability and its importance in self-love (32:47) How parts work can help individuals rediscover their aliveness (35:29) How the lack of polarity in relationships can actually hurt them (40:51) How parts work can be used to improve relationships (47:05) How the parts of ourselves that we show up with can create our reality (51:03) 2 keys to discovering purpose (54:31) The importance of stillness and connecting with nature to access the soul and intuition (58:47) How judging others can be a tool for self-growth [01:03:26] Vision quest as a way to encounter the deepest parts of oneself [01:04:28] The significance of childlike parts in accessing the soul [01:06:56] How Tim received guidance from a dead Joshua tree Notable Quotes “All parts serve and all parts deserve love. Even if they are destructive parts, even if they are parts that have caused great damage and great pain, a part cannot exist without a function. They don't just exist randomly and they all serve the self in some way. It might get really twisted and sometimes it does, and the key is not to kill the part, the key is not to throw it away. That just leads to more pain and suffering. The key is to understand it and ultimately to love it. And it's through that embracing that we can really experience transformation.” - Tim (22:36) Our Guest Tim Corcoran is the founder of Purpose Mountain, where he offers Nature Based Purpose Guidance to support people with a love for wild nature who feel a deep yearning to discover their purpose. Tim also serves as co-Director of Twin Eagles Wilderness School, an organization he co-founded with his wife in Sandpoint, Idaho in 2005 dedicated to facilitating deep nature connection mentoring, cultural restoration, and inner tracking. Tim Corcoran is a Nature Based Purpose Guide and the founder of Purpose Mountain. He is a certified Purpose Whisperer. For a long time, I cringed whenever I saw people use this word. I thought it was an oversimplistic and biased interpretation of a random series of events. The first time I heard Tim speak was when that started to change for me. I felt something deep inside, ringing with energy and bursting with potential, held in a sense of knowingness that felt more solid than the chair I'm sitting on. Your Purpose is that thing, that calling, that direction that your entire life is constantly reorienting and pointing you towards. It's what happens when you surrender to Life. The instinctual gravitational force that never stops pulling you, no matter how far you feel you have 'strayed from the path.'If know what I'm speaking about, and want to turn up the volume on this Inner Guidance, or you don't and feel a curiosity tingling in your toes, this episode is going to be medicine for your soul.In this episode:What is Purpose? How to find and follow itHow to discern a true synchronicity from an imagined oneSensitivity as a non-specific amplifierHow to find the right mentorThe true meaning of prayerThe ultimate practice for connecting to your Purpose: The Vision QuestThe Soul Wander: a bite-sized Vision Quest LinksTims Work:Purpose MountainThe Vision QuestOther:Tim's Interview with Erick GodseyHEx Ascent Podcast: How to Make a Living Doing What You LoveAPOTHEOSIS - The Ultimate Plant Medicine Retreat

In the last episode, Tim and I spoke about our personal journeys with purpose, belonging, taking soul wanders, and how this brings us into this incredible space where nature reflects what truly lies within. As we continue with Part 2 of our walk with purpose in today's conversation, we dive deeper into the ancient ritual of a Vision Quest – sharing what this ritual is and what it can reveal. I've been on a personal vision quest with Tim's guidance and, on this transformative journey of mine, I encountered deep questions with tough to grasp answers. But as I interacted with these questions, so much more than guidance was revealed. Join me as we step into this vision quest with my walking partner, Tim Corcoran. In This Episode (04:58) - What is a vision quest? (13:36) - The two sides of preparing for a vision quest (17:00) - What does Life want to do with me? (18:39) - The grounding mantra of ‘trust the ceremony' (25:53) - Establishing a conversation with the ancient one (33:38) - The post-vision quest return (35:14) - Proper preparation and proper integration before and after the quests (39:00) - My journey towards peace (42:51) - “To quest is to go experience the fullness of life.” (47:53) - The most important changes that take place when we go out in and return from quest Notable Quotes “I've used different versions of this phrase before at different parts of my life, ‘trust the process'. But really, I wanted to honor the ceremony, the sacred ceremony I was entering. And so that mantra became to trust the ceremony. I'm gonna connect to my soul, I'm gonna connect to my purpose. I'm gonna connect it by all these intentions of what I wanted out of the process. And then ultimately that was able to fade away so that I could turn and say, I'm gonna trust the ceremony. And it was through the journey itself, through the vision quest that I recognized that the mantra that I came up with had nothing to do, or it didn't only have to do with the vision quest. That's pretty much become my mantra, because I now understand for me, this life is the ceremony. We're in the ceremony right now in this grand experiment. This is the ceremony.” - Luke (18:39) “I want the fullness of life and if there's darkness in me that I have to face, then so be it. I'll face it. And I think that's a mindset that is appropriate especially for a quest. And it's that willingness, it's that vulnerability, it's that courage that's so important. My hope is for our listeners that maybe this inspires you to find that. Because I do believe we all as human beings have that potential inside of us to face these depths. And it's only in facing our darkness that we'll be able to face our light and yeah, it gets pretty dark, and yeah, it gets pretty bright. In the end, I've never worked with anybody who didn't say that it was worth it.” - Tim (43:20) Our Guest Tim Corcoran is the founder of Purpose Mountain, where he offers Nature Based Purpose Guidance to support people with a love for wild nature who feel a deep yearning to discover their purpose. What is my purpose? What is the meaning of this life? There are moments when these questions come screaming at me with this tremendous sense of urgency for years. At times, I've had answers to some of these questions, and other times I've struggled greatly when these answers no longer held true. One of the most recent chapters of this walk that I've been on is something that I wanted to share with you in this two-part conversation because it was such an extraordinary experience. Join me as we unfold this part of my journey with my walking partner for today, Tim Corcoran. In This Episode (04:48) - What the Buddha did not know about hunting (09:14) - Losing my connection with nature (15:51) - My path with mindfulness, Buddhism, and other related wisdom traditions (24:09) - Why conversations about purpose have become so prevalent (32:05) - Belonging is worth investing in (40:10) - What is a soul wander? (47:00) - How my hibernation in a cave led to my first intimate experience with a guardian tree (53:19) - Tim's story of Grizzly Butte (1:07:58) - Within your wanders, pay attention to your noticings (1:14:20) - Tim's philosophy on healing Notable Quotes “Many people are waking up and saying, okay, how can I help? This is not right. Okay sure, I can ascend, I can experience meditation. It's a great break from the craziness and the suffering of the physical world. I've got kids, I have a wife, I have children in my community I care about. What are future generations going to experience? What can I actually give to this? What am I gonna leave behind? ‘It's all temporary, don't worry about it, I'll meet you on the other side'. No, you know, I care about this earth. This earth has helped me, so I love it so much, and I want to leave the best gift I can to this planet. I think more and more people are waking up to that or asking those questions, why the heck am I really here? Is it just random? Was it just an accident? No, there must be a reason why I have taken birth at this time. There must be something I have to offer. That's what I hear from the people I work with, and the people who reach out to me and conversations like this that need that yearning just grows and grows, and so that is hopeful to me.” - Tim (24:45) “There's something that we are connecting to through those experiences that is either informing or working with our soul to transform us into the path that we're meant to be on. And it's in those moments of balance that we start to connect to that and see what we've been through in a very, very different light. And it opens up something beautiful in us. I love that perspective of the language of minimum amount of healing. Because we're not meant to stay perpetually in that cycle. We're not meant to be perpetually in any cycle, and that's where we don't wanna get lost in the healing. We don't wanna get lost in dreaming of this life. We want to be able to continue. Let's move forward in that dream. Let's be aware that we're dreaming and let's interact with it in a very different way. But as we continue to grow from that place of being, and being able to bring that forward, and pay that forward, and offer that giveaway to others, and we'll heal along the way as we need to continue to because it's gonna happen.” - Luke (1:17:58) Our Guest Tim Corcoran is the founder of Purpose Mountain, where he offers Nature Based Purpose Guidance to support people with a love for wild nature who feel a deep yearning to discover their purpose. Tim also serves as co-Director of Twin Eagles Wilderness School, an organization he co-founded with his wife in Sandpoint, Idaho in 2005 dedicated to facilitating deep nature connection mentoring, cultural restoration, and inner tracking. This has got to be the soonest I've had a guest return for a "part 2" conversation. Tim is an expert at connecting people their purpose, something he considers soul-based. Our last conversation was powerful, but I felt we'd just scratched the surface. So dig in with us here on why so many men feel purposeless, the role nature plays in that, how technology alters how we connect, and much, much more. Tim Corcoran is the founder of Purpose Mountain, where he serves as a certified Nature-Based Purpose Guide to support people who hear the call from wild nature to discover their purpose, those with a burning desire to live their vision and a willingness to work with resistance and fears through the Ecology of Self and Voice Dialogue. Tim also serves as co-Director of Twin Eagles Wilderness School, an organization he co-founded with his wife, Jeannine Tidwell, in Sandpoint, Idaho in 2005 dedicated to facilitating deep nature connection mentoring, cultural restoration, and inner tracking. Tim is a leader of men's groups and holistic rites of passage for males, guiding and initiating men and boys into the new paradigm of the mature masculine. Since 1999, Tim has dedicated his life towards consciously furthering this vision of living in balance with the Earth, community, family, self, spirit, and soul. Healing the cultural rift between the mainstream and indigenous cultures, transformational consciousness work, the spiritual journey, ancestral work, deep nature connection, family and holistic health are all deep commitments in his life. Tim is a heart-centered father of two brilliant boys and husband to a magnificent wife and lives in pristine Sandpoint, Idaho. This is the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast. And today on a very special solocast, I'm gonna share with you the best of the best downloads, uploads, and knowledge that I've turned into wisdom through compassion and emotional intelligence during a Vision Quest. Now, if you don't know what a Vision Quest is, it's 10 days out in nature. Four of those days are fasting, which if you haven't done it fast before, don't worry. This is something you can do. If you are here on this video with me, or if you're listening on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, then you know that since day one, my mission has been, "How do I live my life?" Well, how do we live our lives? By understanding this Wellness Pentagon: the mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial responsibilities that all of us signed up for here on planet earth... [01:00] This Vision Quest's Gift And at times, tell me if you resonate with this - at times, it feels like there's only so much energy to go around. Do you feel me on that? Write a comment or write to me if right now in your life, you have been dealing with a lack of energy or an understanding of Qi where you're trying to fill up all these aspects of the Pentagon, but then as soon as you get your relationships great, or your health great, or your spirituality great, one of those sides of the Pentagon tends to be neglected, tends to fall away. And I think this is really the balancing act that all of us signed up for here on planet earth. And if you get one thing from what I share with you from my heart today, I want you to get the gift that I received, or at least if you can't get the full gift of this vision quest, you can, at the very least start your pathway to get the gift that I received. [spacer height="20px"] [01:50] The Power of Forgiveness And that gift to start out is forgiveness. And I'm gonna talk about two types of forgiveness right now. So if you're listening, pull over, if you're in nature, take a deep breath with me because forgiveness is something that I think is intellectualized. And I think there's a lot of content out there about forgiveness, but to truly forgive yourself and to truly forgive someone else, there's a pathway, there's a pathway to get there. And I'm gonna talk about what that pathway is and, and what came through for me, essentially in this Vision Quest. Now, this is my second year in the quest with Tim Corcoran of purposemountain.com. It's an incredible experience that he's created. And this year, last year we were in the mountains in Idaho. This year, we were in the desert, just east of Santa Barbara. And I went out there and it was so wild. [02:45] Chaos Seeking Order So wild. I got sick, I got this crazy sinus infection right before I went out there and I got really angry and I got pissed off. And I was like, why is this happening? You know, trying to like, just go through the lesson without trying to attach, to learning the lesson without actually going through it, tell me if you can relate to that. And by the time I got out there, and by the time I got finished with the quest, which I'm gonna share with you right now, I realized that all things are chaos seeking order. And I truly believe this, all things are chaos seeking order. Now, what do I mean by that? Well, to flashback the two things, two aspects of forgiveness is one: forgiving myself and two: forgiving others, right? I believe it's in the Lord's prayer. You know, forgive the things about others and forgive the things about myself that are actually applicable... [03:40] Embodied Forgiveness And grant me the wisdom to know the difference between the things I can change and the things I cannot. And that's a really big one because I'm not necessarily a religious man, but these two aspects that we're gonna go into right now, forgiving myself and forgiving others. These are the ultimate. And I truly believe that if there is an embodied forgiveness inside of myself and an embodied forgiveness that I have for others that have trespassed against me, or that have harmed me, or that have been malicious towards me, forgiveness does not mean forgetting. So just because I forgive someone, it doesn't mean that I forget the harms that they have projected or perpetrated onto me. All forgiveness is, is a gift that I unwrap with the courage of my heart. And that is it. Forgiveness is the gift that I unwrap using the courage of my heart. [04:40] Forgiving My Father Now, what do I mean by that? In my own example, I got a sinus infection. I went out for year two to the Santa Barbara mountains and for the first three or four days, going through these ego disintegration processes, really sharing the things in my life that are holding me back. There was this common theme, a common theme that came up for me, and that was forgiveness around my father. Now in the previous year, I had done a lot of work forgiving my father and in the year that followed, in the year of integration that followed after the first year, there was a lot of experiences and a lot of different connection points with my father, both email and text, where I did everything I could to establish a healthy boundary and to let him know from my heart to his that if you want to be in my life, if you want to be in my son's life, if you want to have any love or connection that it's so important, we have a foundation of kindness. [05:30] The Process of Death & Rebirth And unfortunately in the way that sometimes things go in life, that foundation of kindness was not respected. It was not honored. And so what came up for me during the quest was this process of death and rebirth. This process of truly, truly letting go. And for all of us, men or women that have had father wounding, this is for you. I went out to my site and after three days of really having so much come up for me on the quest, I sat at the site for about an hour and I looked down and I saw this rock and I wish I had it here in the studio (We're still building out the studio behind me). And I looked down and I saw this rock. And it, it was a rock that looked exactly like a Pentagon. I mean, it could not have been placed there by chance. [06:26] Lessons from God & Mother Nature This rock was the perfect shape of a Pentagon. And I was going through all these different mental cycles of how do I live my best life? How do I be there for my son and my woman and my business. And the answer was a lack of ego integration makes the body physically tired, which leads to me getting sick and having a sinus infection. So I'm sitting there, I'm holding the rock. That's shaped just like a Pentagon. And I break down in tears. I mean, I literally am sobbing because I'm realizing that not only does God and nature, give me every single answer that I ever need to live my life well, but I am actually the one that resists these lessons. And I resist these lessons because I think there was still a part of my child, my inner child, my young boy inside. And he just wanted the father that he never had. [07:24] Healing My Inner Child He wanted his father to be someone that maybe was never really possible. And so the father inside of me being a father to Novah and the man inside of me, leading a movement, leading a business, being here with you, there's an honoring of this that comes through in a Vision Quest because there's no food. There's just water. I'm out there in the middle of nowhere with nothing, just my thoughts and my breath. And it's really magical. What happens when we go out there and what was really magical for me, because I climbed up on this mountaintop. It was maybe two, 300 yards up this mountain. And I sat, cause I just wanted a higher perspective. I wanted a higher perspective on what nature, what God was actually trying to share with me. And I knew it was time. I knew it was time for my own individual ceremony. [08:20] Honoring The Individual Ceremony And this is what gets thrown around a lot. People say the word 'ceremony.' Ceremony, true ceremony is the most sacred thing that we have. Life is a sacred ceremony. Being in communion with nature is a sacred ceremony. Conscious, sacred sex is a ceremony, friendships. I mean everything in life is sacred yet all of us tend to, and I fell into this trap many, many times and still I'll be honest, continue to, right? We're human. But the difference is I have this awareness that was shown to me on that mountaintop when I wanted the higher perspective because the higher perspective is this to the degree that I forgive others. And to the degree that I forgive myself, that is the quality of my life. And I've heard people say this before Tony Robbins and Oprah and all these different speakers, but truly the ultimate gift that I got from the quest this year was letting go of these expectations that my father has to be a certain way. [9:25] Surrendering Control And this is really big because I can have healthy boundaries that I express and that I enforce, but I can't control the outcome. I can't control the outcome. I can't control how other people show up to me or show up to a relationship with me just like I can't control the wind. You know, I can't control the clouds or the sun. So to bring it back in those two ways that I told you, we were gonna go deep on today, the two aspects of forgiveness, I walked down that mountain and I did the hardest part, which was forgiving myself, forgiving myself for all the ways that I had treated women and used pornography and, and lied to others. And really just not been in integrity with myself, I guess you could call it like a spiritual role call that I was being placed in. And in this spiritual role call, I was able to see all the ways that my own father in his own life and, and all of our fathers really, but specifically my own father, wasn't able to show up in the ways that he wanted to, because of his lack of forgiveness or his relationship with his father, his very own father. [10:40] Epigentic Transfers of Trauma And I closed my eyes and I saw how Alan Watts talks about familial patterns or epigenetic transfer of trauma, or just ways of being. It's like all wretch and no vomit. He says where you raise your children by your behaviors and your subconscious ways of being that children absorb. And then they grow up and raised their children in the exact same way. It's all wretch and no vomit. And so for about three or four hours, I don't know, cause I didn't have a watch, but three or four hours, I sat there at my campsite during the quest and I cried and I made mental notes. And then when the time was right, I buried a hole in the ground. I found a bone of a deer and I buried that bone in the ground and I put some rocks and I put some loving intentions into it. [11:26] The "Burial" of My Father And I spoke to the burial of my father. Now, granted he's still alive, but because of challenges that we've had, I've had to set some very bright, hard boundaries about his way of being with me and the way that he's allowed or really anyone right now, I'm talking about him, but anyone is allowed to interact with me. And that is with a baseline of kindness. And so I said to my father as I buried the bone and I buried this relationship with him, I said, "I have to let you go. I have to let you go because of this lack of forgiveness for you. And this lack of forgiveness for myself is killing me. It's hurting." And so I buried the bone and I wept because the freedom that I felt after burying the expectations of how this person should show up all simultaneously, knowing that I am going to have the bright-line boundaries, that if he wants to engage with me with kindness, if he wants to be a part of my son's life, if he wants to be a part of my woman's life that he can. [12:40] Healing My Father Wound And, and I said to him, "The door is always open. I'm not here burying you forever. I'm just burying any kind of resentment or the things that are blocking my forgiveness towards you in this very ground." And that was freedom. I buried him in the ground. Wiped my hands. Tasted the dirt and I said, "I'm burying you, father, with kindness and I'm here. The door is here. If you want to return that kindness back." And then came the work over the next three, four days of me integrating this, keeping this promise to myself, to establish and, and really have these hard, bright-line boundaries with him and with all people so that the father inside of me can shine. [13:20] Processing & Integrating The Lessons And this was a really big deal. This was a huge deal for me because I think I had to go through that first year of anger and processing to really get to the second year so that the lessons could integrate in the earth that I was standing on. And that was a big one. The last thing I'm gonna read to you is when I got back to the circle and I was integrating with the group, I wanna read this to you because this was something that I actually journaled, but I lost my journal and when I lost my journal, I just had to go off of this recording. Luckily someone in the group put their phone down as we were integrating. And I wanna share this with you. I know this is gonna be really powerful if you yourself have dealt with any kind of a father wound. And so on the very last night, on the fourth night, I seriously felt like that fourth night was an entire day. And I was like, is this ever gonna end? [14:27] I Will Not Live in Fear And I just stripped off everything. I stripped off everything and put my sleeping bag to the side. As the moon was bright, I just stood up and I said, "I will not live my life in fear. I will not live my life in fear, fear of not forgiving someone, fear of not forgiving myself, fear of what might happen, fear of poverty, fear of anything, fear of disease." And then I laid there and my heart was pounding after four days of fasting. And I, I asked Spirit this powerful question, which I'm gonna read to you now on the final hour of the last night, the darkest hour, I laid in my sleeping bag under the stars to feel the cool wind on my face and hear the owls hooting in the distance. [15:25] Asking for God's Guidance My stomach was rumbling so hard in the most intense way as if the grumbling was the shroud of twisted energy that bends the branches of the trees and coils their trunks with my heart racing, I lay on the earth asking for guidance to God from humility. I said, "God, Great Spirit, Mother Earth. Why do I feel so nervous and experience deep anxiety before I record big podcasts and speak in front of large groups? I feel as if there's a weight on my chest and my mind races to be seen as perfect. I ask you humbly, what is the truth? I've experienced this feeling for so long, this restlessness I'm seeking your wisdom. I'm seeking your relief. And after what seemed like 10 minutes, she finally answered. [16:13] Choosing Freedom She said, "Child, you must love yourself." "Deeply know this every single time, big or small that you've experienced trauma from parents, society, school, bullies, friends, or even more subtle and sinister and subversive like mental trauma from media propaganda teaching and forcing you to distrust yourself every single time you closed your heart in fear or shame, a record was created." "Your ego subconscious has been creating a live-in library for you, your entire existence, and everything big or small that made you close your heart. A record was stored over time." "Little by little, every single record was written and recorded deep in the mental recesses by the ego to keep you safe from pain. But this safety came with an ultimate price, a price that can only be paid by the integration of all the fear and shame with the courage and wisdom of your heart. If you want to be free, you must choose." [17:17] Reopening Our Hearts "You must choose to enter healing, spiral a path to remove the shackles of safety because life is not always safe. My child life is wild and this is the price that must be. And this is the price that must bravely be paid." "So, the light of your soul can be free to shine bright as it did when you were a child, because you see my child, it was not your fault that you closed your heart. It is all just a part of life. And now the noble responsibility to free your soul lies at your feet." "Now, look down and see the uncountable pebbles lay before you and know each pebble is a time that you closed your heart. When someone caused you hurt when the pain was too much to hold with the level of your maturity and strength now is the time. So bend down child and pick up as many pebbles as your two hands can hold." [18:14] Your Body is Your Subconscious "Knowing that your body is your subconscious mind - as above so below - and know that it is your body that has built a wall around your heart and extra weight around your physical body, for that pain and know that it is your body that has built a wall around your heart and extra weight around your physical body." "For the pain, no one trusts. You're not alone. My child, I am with you. We are all with you. All your ancestors are holding and loving you for all the pebbles in your blood that they themselves could not heal in their lifetimes. For those they gave to you, forgive them." "They did not know you are the chosen one. Not because you're more special than those who came before you, but because you and I are special just like them. And you have the courage and the chance they may not have had." [19:09] Healing Our Trauma "And you have the courage and the chance they may not have had. So bend down and pick up all the pebbles you can hold with your two hands. Do not fret. If summer spilled, there is time. My sweet child, there is time now. Breathe." "One by one, hold each pebble in your hand and place it on your heart. Feel what needs to be felt. Scream, belt, scream, cry, shake. If you must. So as you feel it fully, the pebble will melt and move through you. These rocks are too. These rocks are too heavy to carry any longer, and there will be more to carry on the path ahead." "It is your strength and grace that will guide you to the truth. Open your heart to this truth, my child, that you are loved. You are supported and with pebbles in your hands and at your feet, you are on the right path." It's good to feel that truth. It is so refreshing to know that all of us, every single human being, I don't care if you're four years old or 42 or 84, we all have trauma. We all have wounding. And it's actually the societal narrative that blocks us from exploring it, from unpacking it, from getting to the root of it. Is that,"I'm okay. Everything's okay. Good vibes only..." [20:40] "Good Vibes Only" is a Lie But it's all a lie. I know that from this quest and from the act of the two phases of forgiveness that I've shared with you, both forgiveness for myself and forgiveness for others, it is the gift that I unwrap with the courage of my heart. It is the gift that I know I can give to others repeatedly because life is a series of events where we'll have to forgive ourselves and others for the ways that we treat ourselves for the narratives that we speak to us and for the narratives and the ways that we speak to others. And if you've gotten anything from this solocast, make sure you keep listening. I'm gonna share exactly what happened in the group. So keep listening to this now, but if you received any wisdom from this that you were positively impacted by, that really meant a lot to you write it in the comments below, or you can message me on Instagram or just write me a personal message. Also for more resources, you can go to joshtrent.com/437. That's joshtrent.com/437 That's where I list a ton of resources to support you for free and the five sides of your Wellness Pentagon. Look, I don't have it all figured out, but I'm at a wonderful place compared to where I used to be. That is for sure. The place I'm at now, after going through two years of the quest, knowing that there are more years ahead of me, that's the most honest... [22:14] Sharing My Forgiveness of Self and of Others And the most real experience I can give to you is that I, myself am still a student on this path of wellness in life. The greatest gift that I ever have in this world is sharing my forgiveness of self and my forgiveness of others right here with you. And I want to end by just this quote that I've mentioned on the podcast a few times, but I've also really been swallowing this and feeling this in my heart of my solar plexus. It's from Rumi. And as we say goodbye, let Rumi guide you here. Take a deep breath. Beyond right and wrong beyond right and wrong. There is a field I will meet you there. Their 100% Grass Fed Beef Sticks are unlike anything else on the market. In fact, they were recently voted in Paleo Magazine as one of the top snacks of the year. The reason is that they are committed to making the highest quality, clean products that are free from problematic ingredients. Their beef comes from 100% grass fed cows raised entirely on natural grass pastures by family farmers right here in the USA. As a result they are healthy and happy. PaleoValley's Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks Paleovalley Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks were created to make healthy snacking easier. Their turkey sticks are made from turkeys who are allowed to live as nature intended... on organic grass pastures with plenty of sunshine, fresh air and room to exercise. The result of raising turkeys in such a natural way is a much healthier, clean protein with higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Unfortunately, virtually all turkey in the USA is conventionally raised with a small portion being "free range" – a virtually meaningless term that simply means the turkeys were allowed access to the outdoors. However, most "free range" turkeys only have access to an outdoor dirt field with no pasture in sight. Their truly pasture-raised turkeys are given full access to outdoor, pesticide-free pasture with plenty of grass and insects for them to nibble on.

Tim is also a Trustee and Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management, former President of the Legal Marketing Association and a member of its Hall of Fame, an American Lawyer Research Fellow, a Teaching Fellow at the Australian College of Law's Master in Legal Business program, and a frequent presenter at lawyer retreats and legal conferences. Tim's mission is to guide law firms and leaders through the profitable disruption of outdated business models — including compensation. With over two decades as a senior corporate executive and a deep understanding of the psychology and economics of change, he knows how to navigate challenging discussions masterfully using actionable advice. In this episode… Many compensation models were put into place generations ago — and haven't been updated since. Why is it so important to adjust your compensation plan with the evolving industry, and how can you transition? The market is changing, forcing law firms of all sizes to demonstrate their expertise in order to sell against steeper competition. Nowadays, compensation should be based more on an individual's skillsets and contributions — rather than seniority. Although a compensation model is not a one-size-fits-all approach, your firm should be looking to reward innovation and talented employees who are winning more work for the company. Fortunately, Tim Corcoran says adjusting a compensation plan is not as complicated as you might think. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge Podcast, Elise Holtzman is joined by Tim Corcoran, Principal at Corcoran Consulting Group, to talk about the best ways your firm can update its compensation model. Tim discusses the outdated compensation methods — and why it's important to evolve with the market, changes that impact how law firms should compensate, and where to begin when looking to update your model.
I set an intention before I talk to somebody about this and you kind of know professionally when someone wants to change. You need to ask them, 'Are you in the headspace right now to receive advice, or do you still just need to tell me what is going on, and do you just need support at this point in time?' When I've found them to be in a space where they are willing to receive and act upon advice, I do it in a very, very gentle way. I just say, 'Look, when you step out because I know you're just stuck in it and it might be harder to see the big picture and how it's effective, but this is not serving you. I know you have so much potential and if we could just change this one thing, I think it will help you make real progress.' - Autumn Smith Are You Stressed Out Lately? Fortunately, I was able to stabilize that and once I started studying health, I realized unstable blood sugar will also actually increase your risk for pretty much every degenerative chronic disease possible. It can lead to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, and even more. However, if you use apple cider vinegar or something similar to bring your blood sugar stability back to normal, you will have this incredible wealth of bandwidth all of a sudden. The benefits are so powerful; you will have more energy, vitality, and will even sleep better." - Autumn Smith Being One with Mother Earth "In our modern world, we think there's a pill for every ill but that's not the answer we should be looking for. Here at Paleovalley, our products like our Apple Cider Vinegar Complex and beef and turkey sticks are about sharing the beautiful wisdom that exists between nature and our bodies. Even though we have evolved using that intelligence, we have also become very disconnected from the planet. Our products like the ACV Complex focus on trying to help people come back to that. We look at the wisdom of Mother Earth and we just bring the highest quality ingredients from our planet into a version that people can use every day." - Autumn Smith Links From Today's Show 352 Autumn Smith: How To Heal Your Brain With Food Paleovalley's Apple Cider Vinegar Complex Paleovalley's Beef & Turkey Sticks The #1 Nutrient to Boost Your Mental Health 135 Autumn Smith: The Truth About Food And Mental Health Optimize Paleo Podcast by Paleovalley Paul Chek | All Is God 405 Tim Corcoran 384 Shawn Stevenson 364 Alison Armstrong 293 Dr. Jade Teta 397 Kara Collier 336 Joe Sheehey Shop the Wellness Force Store breathwork.io Paleovalley – Save 15% on your ACV Complex with the code ‘JOSH' Seeking Health - Save 10% with the code 'JOSH' Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, you only cover the cost of shipping Botanic Tonics – Save 40% when you use the code ‘WELLNESS40' Essential Oil Wizardry: Save 10% with the code 'WELLNESSFORCE' Cured Nutrition – Get 15% off of your order when you visit wellnessforce.com/cured + use the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes Paleovalley Instagram Facebook Twitter Autumn Smith Instagram Facebook About Autumn Smith Autumn Fladmo Smith has been a health enthusiast her entire life. Trauma is just the word that we are using right now to describe this phenomenon but this has been happening as far back as we can trace recorded history. The Mystics in India had a different name for it and I truly think that when they are speaking about attachment, they're speaking about trauma. Our attachment to something, our attachment to the memory of the past, attachment to the future, our ability to be with ourselves to sit in stillness and experience our bodies. It's all the same thing... ...So, what do we have to do? Slowly and methodically address the body's memory and help it to create a new form. Help it to discover itself. As soon as I notice that I am out of balance, my body will bring me back into balance because it's natural. - Will Rezin Are You Stressed Out Lately? How our trauma prevents us from experiencing the miracle of being alive. Unpacking what our first line of defense is even before we get into freeze, fight, or flight mode. Why it's a survival mechanism to say "yes" to something even when we don't want to because we're afraid of what might happen if we say, "no." [10:30] How to Prevent Trauma from Lingering Within Us The fact that we are way more animal than we are psyche and Will explains why. How physical movement like dancing or exercise helps us, like animals, to discharge the extra energy that we're carrying and prevent any trauma from happening. Why stuck energy and stuck trauma varies from person to person including what happens to us and how we handle it. How epigenetics plays a role in how we process our own trauma and emotions. The importance of addressing our own problems first before focusing on healing outside of ourselves. Why chaos is trying to find order otherwise we wouldn't have dualities like love and fear. The deep journey that Josh did for the first time in 2 years with ketamine and why this meeting with Will was perfect timing. Why you shouldn't just go out and do something like ketamine or plant medicine before doing the deep inner work with tools like therapy, breathwork, and meditation first. [13:40] Somatic Experiencing Breaking down what somatics and somatic experiencing are and how they're applied to the healing journey. How somatic healing helps the body resolve trapped trauma. Next steps you can take if you want to work with Will on a deep level to help you heal your trauma. Somatic Experiencing International Directory: Somatic Experiencing International Power Quotes From The Show The Threat of Trauma to Humanity's Evolution "We're not broken, we've had to adapt as we evolve to our environment but literally the largest problem that humanity has ever faced in its history - the cause of all other problems is our unprocessed trauma because it prevents us from experiencing our aliveness and it desensitizes us to life, to other humans, to our environment so we walk around disconnected, not really feeling that aliveness, the world, ourselves, or each other and what does that lead to? Destruction of the environment, destruction of ourselves, torture, and war. We can point to all of the other characteristics that might spring up out of that but all of these are symptoms and we're trying to put out of the fire but we're not addressing the volcano that's causing the fire." - Will Rezin Move at the Pace of Nature "We put a lot of our faith into something; whether that may be a drug, an experience, or working with a certain kind of practitioner assuming it will give us the answer we need for the rest of our lives. No. Move at the pace of nature. Life is an ongoing journey of unfolding, rearranging, and growing. There is no place to arrive. There is only a continuous movement of change and if we let go of the idea that something will help us arrive or give us the answer, then it might give us the opportunity to actually change." - Will Rezin Shaking Off Living Memories of Trauma "We are far more animal than we are psyche. Movement like dancing discharges the extra energy that we are carrying and helps prevent any trauma from happening. Trauma is the lingering of it; it's that living memory. We can prevent any memory from living on by allowing our body what it needs to do instead of inhibiting it. If i stop myself from experiencing an emotion, what happens to that emotion? Emotions are energy in motion but if I stop that process then it becomes stored within. Over time if I suppress feelings of anger constantly, I will become depressed. Depression is anger turned inward. It's an unexpressed and unprocessed survival response." - Will Rezin Links From Today's Show Enter the Wellness Force $3,000 Holiday Giveaway HERE! Listen To Episode 421 As Josh Trent Uncovers: [00:00] Our Spiritual Intelligence Hey, it's Josh from Wellness Force. This is a really special Solocast. It's been a long time. And the Solocast is really an art form that I think we all can practice, but today I want to give a different kind of practice to the world, to your consciousness specifically. Many of the concepts we explore on Wellness Force take us between physical and emotional intelligence. But as you know, in the background, there was always the spiritual intelligence that runs all things. This Solocast I actually recorded in a little hand recorder earlier this year, before the birth of my son. I was out at Tim's event, Tim Corcoran, who is the CEO, the founder of Purpose Mountain. Make sure you could listen to that podcast. If you haven't heard it, it is amazing for any men that want to become fathers or father the young man inside of themselves. [00:52] Break Out of the Sedation And what you're about to hear was actually dictated from a hand recorder when I was coming off the hill, when I was getting all these beautiful reflections, purely in the potent medicine of mother nature, and it was about our sedation. One of the things I found in 100 hours of being completely in nature, immersed with no food, only water, no fire, no knife, no protection, no cell phone, no other human beings. Literally my breath, water, a sleeping bag, and a tarp. It was incredible. And I'm going to share this with you. I hope that this medicine reaches you wherever you are, whatever phase you're in, whatever growth potential you're leaning into. My belief is that if you slow down and you breathe and you take in this medicine of really the Solocast for us all, that you can break out of the sedation we're in. Our society is set up to sedate us. [01:52] Society Sedation And so let's begin. In this podcast, you're going to learn about our sedation tools that we all have to fight against and be aware of. We'll talk about food. We'll talk about media. Then we'll talk about your own thoughts. We'll talk about freedom and we'll explore the difference between pure disease and pure health. If you yourself have dealt with addiction of any kind or disassociation or anxiety or depression, this podcast is perfect for you. Solocast society sedation. Our society is set up to sedate us. This is not a conspiracy theory. Everything in the truth is out in plain sight. Look at the food, media, current events, even the general narrative and consensus in most communities is negative. And you'll find that everything is about keeping you safe and playing it nice and cozy, but safe, nice, and cozy does not live on the edge of juiciness. Does not live on the edge of what life really is. [02:52] Sedation in Modern Society Yes, there are times where we do need to be sedated, like if we've had a traumatic event or if we've worked our butt off and gotten super sweaty and we've earned our relaxation. We just need to chill. Yes. Being sedated is okay at times. I'm an advocate for conscious rest, but not as a pulse of life, not as a heartbeat of our existence. Let's explore the factors of sedation in our modern society. As we begin with food, understand that food keeps us sedated by tons of calories with no nutrients, plain simple facts. Sedation occurs when people consume too many calories and they gain too much weight. Now there's a huge backstory that's psychosomatic and emotionally intelligence based that attaches to that. We'll save that for another show, but essentially what happens food is that if we take in too many calories, and those calories are void and empty of any kind of micronutrients, just because something's fat, protein, and carbs, doesn't always mean it's real food. [03:50] The Palette of Human Emotions If you look at the amount of money that is spent literally in the billions, with a big ass B, by behavioral scientists, you actually study the palette of human emotions if you're a behavioral scientist for Kraft foods, for Burger King, for McDonald's, and you get the inflection point of the perfect amount of sweetness. This is how people become addicted. This is the sedation tool that is called soda. It's called the bliss point. Did you know one of the ways that big foods sedates us, if we allow them to, is this bliss point? Did you even know that the bliss point exists? Where if it's one degree sweeter, you won't drink it, but if it's one degree not as sweet, you won't drink it either. There's a perfect Goldilocks point that all chemists for Dr. Pepper, Diet Coke, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, all these big companies with their labels on trucks flying all over America. [04:42] Enslaving the Population They literally pay billions of dollars over the course of decades, and they spend a billion dollars a year on other marketing. But if you add it up with the salary, the research and development, everything that goes into basically being a slave, scientists who know that they're enslaving the population for diabetes, for leptin resistance, for extra ghrelin, they're doing it for money. Can you imagine, can you truly imagine going to bed at night being one of these behavioral psychologists, behavioral scientists, really they're scientists, not psychologists. You're one of these people who literally it's your job to addict people to soda and addict people to junk food. Now, this isn't about judgment, but seriously, can you think about that? Can you imagine going to bed knowing that your work and how you get paid is to find the bliss point that's going to make people fat and die earlier. [05:36] The Global Spread of Bad Habits Whoa. and I really do say that without judgment. It's more just, Hey, what are you doing? So I digress, let's get back to it. Essentially, when we look at the topic of sedation in food and beverage, specifically, whether it's soda or Jimmy Dean sausages, or frozen foods, you ever go into a grocery store and you look down the aisle and you see this absolute Mecca of food. There's angels and junk food playing harps with little Ding Dongs. And you wonder to yourself who is eating this shit? Well, look at the research. A lot of Americans are, and it's even worse in other countries because our habits are bleeding over there. So this is what happens on a mental level. As you are trained from childhood to start eating these foods that are void of nutrients, the brain actually gets starved of calories and nutrients that it needs. [06:26] What Even is Real Food? It doesn't get its healthy fats like avocados. It doesn't get its fish oils like the omega-3s. This is what gets us to where we are, whether it's food or beverage or snacks, all of these for foods, if you flip the panel over and you look at the ingredient list, this is a queue. If it has more than a handful of ingredients or you look at those ingredients and you don't exactly know what it means are the worst one, if you look at the ingredients and it says natural flavors, look the hell out because it is not a real food. This is a food substitute designed by commerce to keep you sedated. Now, this might seem a little jarring if you're hearing it for the first time, but it keeps you sedated. These foods that are in the GRAS list, G-R-A-S. Search on DuckDuckGo for G-R-A-S. [07:13] The GRAS List That's generally regarded as safe. These additives turn your brain power down by adding fat to your body, making you feel sluggish and tired. Well I say, hell no. Hell no. Are you with me? Not for me. Not for you. You can take your sedation tools and put them somewhere else, Pepsi, Coke, Jimmy Dean, KFO, meat and chicken raised with animals and poultry standing in their own feces. The list goes on and on. And so that's the first piece. And there could be an entire discussion on that, but you already know this. If you've listened to the Wellness Force podcast, one or multiple times, you can see that there is a lot of behind the scenes going on with pretty bows and packages that make people purchase products, which is essentially like buying pigs wearing lipstick. [07:58] Sedation by News Media So now that you understand what's really going on with food, you can go to wellnessforce.com and search food or real food. We have a search bar on the homepage. Start learning more about how to protect yourself from the way that society tries to sedate you with food. It's much, much more than just what you're putting in your mouth. Now let's move on to the second piece of how society is designed to sedate men and women. And that is the news media. Now this is huge because the news media has a narrative that works to sedate us 24/7/365. And it does it by the vehicle of fear. And fear is really false evidence appearing real. Think about that. If it's false, if it's evident, the news media can make it appear real. And by they, I mean Rupert Murdoch and the six companies that run the entire media network for the entire United States and the world. You can Wikipedia this. [08:57] Breaking Down the Mainstream Narrative This is not conspiracy theory. Here's what happens. And I'm sure you're already feeling it or maybe you sent this to somebody who's already felt it and that's why you're here with us. But there are people that as soon as they find out, there's a narrative like this, that goes against the mainstream narrative, they like to label you and I, "conspiracy theorists." I say that with huge air quotes, but it's not a conspiracy theory. It's right out there. Do that basic DuckDuckGo search or Brave. And you will see that the media, the global media is run by six oligopolies, six conglomerates who all get paid billions and billions of dollars every single year in advertising fees. And you won't have to guess too far to know who their largest client is. It's big food and big pharma. It doesn't come as a surprise. [09:46] Selling the Solution to All Your Fears I think we all feel this on some level, but when you see what Joe Rogan is posting recently on Instagram, where Pfizer was the main prime sponsor on the majority of MSNBC, CNBC, all the different sporting events brought to you by Pfizer. Can you guys connect the dots? Look, I'm not here to say you should not ever have intervention from pharmacology. Even life insurance, right? I'm not here to say that that insurance is bad or we don't need to demonize entire industries. But I think everything has a time and a place. With your heart and with your intuition, notice that baked into every single commercial and every single piece of media propaganda out there, it is for you to be afraid. But what I have to sell you as a pharmaceutical company or an insurance company, it's the solution to all your fears, isn't it? Look at Viagra. [10:38] Hospitals Are a For-Profit Enterprise Oh, you're going to break up with your wife. No, just take this pill. Look at car insurance. Save a bundle with Geico, the little lizard that tries to make you buy insurance. And then of course, when they get you on the phone, they're actually going to upsell you for insurance that you don't need. But the worst of them all is health insurance. Companies that provide health insurance the way that it's tied into the medical industrial complex and the pharmaceutical and the wards that run hospitals. Just so you know, hospitals are a for-profit enterprise. Hospitals are not non-profit. Think about health insurance. The greatest health insurance we ever have is the belief in our own self, not an exterior company that can somehow provide us a solution. And again, there's a time and a place for medicines. I'm not here to demonize medicine. I think medicine has strayed very far from how it started. [11:29] Our Broken Healthcare System But if you look at the original symbol with the staff and the snakes right on top, it says, do no harm. Do no harm. Well, that is not the case. The majority of medicine out there has its own interest at the forefront and the patient in the backseat. It's a broken system, which is another podcast we can go into. And you can actually look at the podcast with Dr. Zach Bush, which is episode 345 or Dr. William Li, many of the physicians we've had on the show. This major news media, the fear narrative of Rupert Murdoch and the six media companies that basically run the planet, especially in the USA. How do those companies use fear to make us feel small so that we get sedated only when we buy their stuff that we will quote, be safe, or at least that's what they tell us? [12:17] Buying Out of Fear Ponder that question. How many times in your life, if you really tune in, have you bought something out of fear? I know I have. We've all done it. Oh my gosh. I got to get this supplement because it's going to make me live longer. Oh my God, I got to buy this fill-in-the-blank to give me blank because I'm not good enough or I'm not safe enough where I am. I just want you to know that there is truth and honesty in sales. Everything that I sell is honest. I believe in the BREATHE: Breath and Wellness program. From my heart, I believe in the offerings that we have for our community. I believe in the Freedom Accelerator Mentorship, because I do them with clients in groups all day long. And so the people in our community, I believe in our sponsors, Cured and Force of Nature and Paleovalley and Organifi. [13:00] Money is Energy All these amazingly organically grown, organically made products. Here is the key to breaking out of sedation when it comes to buying supplements or buying things that you really don't need. Just know when something's organic and people actually care about the planet, they're giving back to the planet. They're taking care of Mother Earth. We can take care of them with our money, right? Because money is energy. So wrapping a bow on this second category of sedation, the fear news media. You need to check yourself before you wreck yourself. I think it was a rap song by Busta Rhymes or Wreckx-n-Effect. Check yourself before you wreck yourself. So check yourself if you're watching the news media, either on your phone or Instagram or Facebook or television. I'm not here to tell you what to do, but tune in. If you feel stressed, if you feel less love for yourself after you watch the news media, it is truly as simple as putting it down, turning it off, and stop watching the news. [13:58] The Agenda to Keep People Silent It's actually quite that simple. Just stop watching the news. Stop it. Stop it. Now the sedation has already been talked about, so feel into this one a little bit more. We've already talked about how food keeps you sedated. We've talked about how people are easier to divide and control when you're sedated on many podcast, and specifically through the news media, which is number two. Well, when you're in fear, you're much easier to be divided and conquered. I'm not going to get into it now, but if you look at the history of mask-wearing in ancient Egypt and Africa, many continents, mask-wearing was always used to sedate people and to keep people silent. And I believe that is exactly what's going on right now. So this brings us to our third point. If you are watching something, you are consuming something from a media perspective, whether it's Facebook, Instagram, or even a podcast. I advise you to take a deep breath, do a basic search on news media corruption. [14:53] The News Media Corruption Specifically, there is one video that I'm going to link here in the show notes. And all these newscasters across the entire United States at the same time, on the same day that are all owned by the same conglomerates, they all said, "This is a danger to our democracy." It is going to put chills on your neck, my friend. It is going to freak you out. You'll probably never watch the news again and good. Make sure you go to the blog here for this Solocast. After hearing it, this incredibly terrible phrase, this is incredibly dangerous to our democracy. It's like robots. Make up your own choice. Again, I'm not here to tell you what to do. Stop watching the news media immediately. If you care for your health, if you care for your family, if you don't want to be sedated, put down the news media. It is poisoning you. [15:39] How Pornography is Harming Us It is subtly making you sick by keeping you in fear. Now, let's talk about the third face of sedation. We talked about how food makes you sick and the media makes you sick and sedated. And the next one is big for all of us, especially for men and it's pornography. And this is a polarizing topic, but pornography is something that 24/7/365 is available on every device. Available for any 9, 10, 11, 12, 13-year-old boy or girl to watch. And when you're addicted to pornography, and I speak from my own past experience on this, you will sedate the very life force energy that creates life inside of you. Play that back again. You will sedate the very life force energy that creates life inside of you. And this is the greatest tragedy that we are facing right now as a society, as parents. Pornography is not something to be used as a replacement for true sex and life force energy. [16:30] How Pornography Feeds On Our Energy Pornography is something that has been used as a tool to disconnect people from themselves. Same with prostitution. I'm not here to say that prostitution is right or wrong. You can make up your own choice on that, but there is a close neighbor of pornography and prostitution. They feed on the same energy and the energy is that you're not enough. You can't get what you need. You can't get fulfilled and nourished with your own value, so you have to actually pay for it with money or pay for it with your soul. Subtly pornography plants negative mental seeds. You don't have what it takes to get a real partner or to have a true sexual connection. Or maybe you got hooked on this stuff when you were young, just like me, right? It starts with Playboy. Then it turns into Penthouse. Next Hustler. Then it goes to the wavy lines on the cable TV, and then you try to point out a private part or a breast or something. [17:18] How Pornography Hooks into the Limbic System And, oh my God, there it is. So it starts out just like leading lambs to slaughter in Pinocchio. When all the kids went to the island, pornography starts out the same way. Nice and easy, and then it goes real south real fast, whether it's on a tablet or a phone or computer, these sites, once they hook into the limbic system of young men, look out because it's like feeding candy to a child, 24/7/365. Ponder this, sex is one of the most powerful energies known to this planet, gifted to us by great spirit. And it is an absolute atrocity that we allow this pornography to be consumed all day long in every country in every household. I'll tell you what, for all the parents listening, I almost guarantee that your child has most likely, already seen it. Some of the most disgusting things you could ever imagine. [18:07] The Dark, Demonic Energy of the Porn Industry And what does this do to us? How does this normalize gender dysphoria and sexual orientation confusion? How does pornography diminish the flame of life force energy inside of all beings? Well, it's quite simple because it teaches that a false sense of sexuality is real. And you can take that to the bank and cash it because pornography is not real. Porn is mental masturbation that turns into physical masturbation to have some kind of false sexual flame identified as the real thing. And this is a very sinister force, this pornography. If you look at many people that are involved in the industry, most are drug addicts, many commit suicide. There's a dark, demonic energy around the entire adult film industry and in many adult films. By the way, maybe back in the day before it became incredibly corrupted by dark energy and demonic forces, maybe there was some great erotic art and you know what? [18:57] Following Your Heart's Wisdom Maybe now there still is some great, incredible erotic art as well. I'm not here to say that erotic art done in a tasteful way is bad. Actually, I think it can really help people, but that is 1% of 1%, right? The elephant in the room, no one wants to photograph it. No one wants to talk about it, but it's right there on your child's phone. And this is what needs attention. This is what sedates us. And it starts out in childhood. There is a solution to everything that I've talked about today, whether it's food, whether it's news media, whether it's pornography. The last one is the thoughts that you think. This is what needs the most attention. And again, this starts out in childhood. Your heart's wisdom knows to turn off the TV and to turn off the news media. Your heart's wisdom knows to buy foods that are from Mother Earth, unadulterated, unprocessed, unhomogenized. [19:47] The Antidote to Sedation Your heart's wisdom knows that the antidote to sedation is turning into the heart's wisdom. And that is the gift that we all get to receive today. But how do you do this? How do you transform your thoughts from a seed of negativity to a mighty oak tree of positivity? It can almost feel like changing a circle into a square depending on your childhood and what you've been through. Well, this is the fourth phase. Your thoughts become things. So the first part of the transformation with your thoughts starts with the awareness of exactly how much or how far you want to transform. Look, many of us get caught up into zero or 100 where we buy into the manufactured shame economy that tells us we should always want to be a caterpillar that turns into a butterfly and accepting anything less about our desire for transformation means that we're lazy or we don't have ambition. [20:36] What is Success? But what if ambition was not always directly tied to success? What if success was a lot more nuanced and complicated? So many people think of success as this bank account with seven figures or more, but isn't success also a healthy body and a healthy mind that allows you to communicate with family members or friends that you love. What if success was essentially a state of being combined with the honoring of the mystery of life, where we can ascribe to the fact that we choose our parents, therefore we choose our destiny and the recipe for success and transformation can either come from pain or pleasure, from fear or from love. You'll get there from A to B, start to finish, no matter what. We're all going to die. So the most enjoyable and rewarding experience that you know deep down in your heart's intuition should always be the guiding light. [21:25] Building Greater Awareness, Higher Consciousness It should always be the North Star for any kind of achievement or journey discovery. It's the gift that God gave you called life. And what happens is we have this default mode network in our brain and the default mode network is literally what is scanning for danger when we're completing a singular task. And so, depending on what level of awareness you have, if you've done the emotional inventory practice that I've talked about on many shows, I will link that in the show notes here. If you've never really done any self-awareness practice, this is how you escape the negative thoughts, the negativity bias, the negativity force feed that is being stuffed down your throats like you're a duck and they're going to harvest your liver for foie gras. That's how serious it is right now. Yes, you cannot generate the energy that you don't have without consequences, both short-term and long-term to the mental and physical self. [22:17] The Wisdom Inside Us All But you can choose to generate the energy regardless of how you feel using caffeine or supplementation temporarily and infrequently. But the wisdom inside of all of us connected to the intelligence that we are will surely give us loud signals if we're too out of alignment and we're using caffeine, drugs or stimulants or shopping food porn, social media, workaholism, addiction to stress, or any other mechanism that disassociates the head from the heart. The price is going to be paid no matter what we choose to do, but the price that is paid living in alignment with restoring one's energy reserves before putting out maximum energy, that's never going to escape us as human beings. How do we course correct in this fourth phase of understanding how we are sedated? What can we do to adjust? How do we do things in life that actually make us happy? [23:09] Taking an Emotional Inventory Because when we're focused on what makes us happy, everything that's pulling us away from that will bubble up to the surface. And so to be aware of how you truly feel and to have an emotional inventory process where you understand that your life is on purpose, you understand who you are as a person, you understand your value in the world. If you are not clear on your life's purpose and you are not clear on what you want to create in the world, you are completely left wide open to that fourth phase of sedation. And that actually is the negative thoughts, those seeds of negativity, they never ever grow into a tree. They actually turn into weeds and then you start subconsciously gathering the evidence that you're not enough, and that you're not really worthy of your purpose. I want you to know that's not the truth. The truth of who you are, and the antidote to this fourth phase of sedation, was actually perfectly said by Alan Watts. Alan Watts asked his students what makes you itch? [24:09] What Makes You Itch? What was it that if money was no option, you would do, you would love to do? Well, then go do that. Otherwise, if you do something just for money, you will chase it for your whole life, and you'll be hinged upon the next moment where everything might be better or when I can have this much money or when I can just take off this much time, but it's all an empty vacuum begging for closure. And the only thing that nature hates more than a vacuum is a soul that has disconnected from itself. And by hate, I just mean the absence of love. So let me rephrase. I don't think the universe hates anything, but I do think that the universe wants to experience itself with the absence of love. The biggest barometer for all of us when we are not loving or for when we are out of love is when we begin to experience hatred and fear within ourselves. Take a deep breath. [24:59] The Power of Breath Ah, and if you're a student, if you're with us in the community for the BREATHE: Breath and Wellness program, then you know the power of the breath is something that no one can ever take away from you. Once you learn how to breathe properly, how to breathe in a circle, how to breathe in a box, how to do your breath-hold retentions, how to hold your energy locks, how to do your different cyclical and box breathing for your acute stressors, how to pull yourself out of the default mode network. You are not able to be sedated. The opposite of depression is expression. The opposite of anxiety is you here in this current moment. That's where everything's happening anyways. Can you feel it? I'm here with you right now know. We're here together right now. [25:53] Know Thyself You just let that be enough. And so take six more deep breaths as I say goodbye for today. And I'm going to give you an action, an inspired action to take. You now have the biggest barometer to know when you are not loving, when you experience hatred or fear within yourself, which that barometer will immediately light up when you experience one of the four ways that society sedates you, with food, with news media, with pornography, and with the thoughts that you think about yourself. Know thyself. It's written on the temple at the Apollo. Know thyself. Head over to breathwork.io. Use the code PODCAST25. It's my gift to you. This is a three week program. I'm so excited to guide you for the next 21 days, so you can actually use your breath to start being friends with your ego, understanding the parts of yourself that you still are holding onto with shame or judgment or loathing. [26:55] Transform Your Energy Through Breath Those aren't true either, but you must experience them right. Energy that is not transmuted will sit still and no energy can be created. It can only be transformed. Transform this energy because the first part of transformation starts with the awareness of exactly how far you want to transform. I don't care who you are, where you've been. This is an opportunity. And I want to invite you with my open arms. It took me three years to build this program. I traveled around the world. I spent 30 days in Thailand crying and actually throwing up a couple times, doing the most deep practices you can ever imagine. And I brought back the gems. I brought back a three-week process where you can use your own breath to clear your stress. Breathwork.io, the code is PODCAST25. It's 25% off. It's my gift to you. I cannot wait to see you in this program. And that is your inspired action. Whether you are brand new to Wellness Force or whether you are interested in breathwork, or maybe you've tried a lot of things and you're at a turning point in your life where you really need to receive support. This is the call to action for you. Breathwork.io, use the code PODCAST25, and I will see you inside. And until I see you again on another Solocast or another interview, this is Josh Trent saying goodbye for now. Excited to see you at my home's doorstep at breathwork.io. It's so hard because we are fighting biology. Steven Pressfield calls it 'the resistance.' So, what is resistance's number one job? What is a holodyne's number one job? What is a core belief that got installed almost like a microchip in a computer; what is its core job? Its core job is to function without change. So, when I am presented with new information that goes against the construct of the programs that were installed in my mind that activate the holodynes and the beliefs and the way of being, there is going to be a system error, right? That is when your soul has to come in, see things from an observer perspective, and override the programming." - Josh Trent The Tipping Point We Face Every Day "We all have a tipping point that comes when we have experienced a way of being that is creating pain. We change through pleasure and pain; it's an axis and the reason that dark comes really strong right before light is because every day we're in a tipping point. Every single day you and I as men can choose to show up as authoritative playful leaders based on our environment and what we're aware of happening in it. How can you do this? First you have to choose that you want to be aware of what is actually going on in reality; not the subjective reality but the objective reality that you can see from 30,000 feet. After that, ask yourself, 'What is my decision making faculty about how I'm going to adapt and serve in that awareness?' " - Josh Trent What It Means To Be An Authoritative Playful Man "Authoritative Playfulness is what men need to cultivate because if we can be authoritative and playful, that can be trusted. Authoritative means you take care of your body, you take care of your mental health; maybe you learn how to use firearms properly to protect you and your family, maybe you learn how to grow food. Maybe you learn all kinds of skills that can protect from a place of peace and love against evil because evil is real just like love is real. Evil is real because we are still at the consciousness level where we are still carrying out the wishes of evil and those come from greed, resentment, and betrayal which are all ego wounding.... ...They are still these deep, bloody ego wounds that we are uncovering from thousands of years of people being mistreated and honestly trying to be led from dogmatism. So, we get to be authoritative and we get to be playful because we have to have fun and we have to be loving. That's the art form of being authoritative playful and that's what us men have to embody today." Why Rites of Passage aren't just essential for the individual but to the community as well. The benefits of place based cultures to help younger generations discover their roles compared to living in our modern capitalistic world. His and Mark's hope to redefine the term Vision Quest to honor all cultures and our ancestors who have practiced it. How years of colonialism, capitalism have severed our connection to Mother Earth. Connecting our past and the moment in our ancestral history when our families immigrated in order to survive and live a better life. I define masculinity as emotional maturity in a very simple way: It's the ability to be aware of, accept, and express the full range of emotions that we have in a healthy way. In fact, that can be a reasonable definition for emotional intelligence in general for all genders. It can be hard to open up; we're still swimming in these waters of programmed behavior of hiding our feelings. But once we do begin to share, others feel more comfortable opening up as well." - Tim Corcoran The Antidote To Unhealthy Desire "What happens to us as human beings when we do physically disconnect ourselves from the earth and its wildness, and ourselves from our wildness? Then we start getting sick in body, we start losing our wellness, and our minds start to struggle. We start to have mental health issues that we never had before as we cut ourselves off emotionally and spiritually. Then we wonder why we struggle. Each year the machine just picks up more and more pace, more and more technology and it's like there's a great void in our hearts that came about when we first left our natural roots and the whole time we've been looking to fill that with things like a car or a job but it can never fill us up. We can never get enough of what we truly don't need. So, what is the antidote to desire? It's connection." - Tim Corcoran Are You Ready For A Vision Quest? "A Vision Quest is the ultimate shedding of distractions - whether it's tents, warmth, or Facebook likes, those are the trappings of the ego. Those things are what brings us safety, security, and comfort which are all allusions of the ego. A Vision Quest is the intentional process of shifting one's identity from the place of the ego to the place of one's soul. For that to happen, the ego has to loosen its grip during this shedding process and that isn't comfortable. That's why it's important for people have this honest calling and a certain courage to do a Vision Quest because they have to be ready to let go of the things that keep them comfortable. You will get uncomfortable during the process but that is a healthy thing because we live in a culture that worships the 'God of Comfort' and we lose our souls to it, maybe even our planet as a result." - Tim Corcoran Links From Today's Show Tim Corcoran 196 Aubrey Marcus 032 Gay Hendricks 378 Dr. Michael Ruscio 312 Kevin Kelly Alan Watts | All Retch & No Vomit 255 Ted Ryce Aubrey Marcus Podcast | #195 Humans and Nature with Tim Corcoran Paleovalley - Save 15% on your ACV Complex with the code 'JOSH' Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, you only cover the cost of shipping Botanic Tonics - Save 20% off with code 'WELLNESS20' Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes breathwork.io M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Purpose Mountain Facebook Instagram Twitter Twin Eagles Wilderness School Facebook Instagram YouTube About Tim Corcoran Tim Corcoran is the founder of Purpose Mountain, where he serves as a certified Nature Based Purpose Guide to support people who hear the call from wild nature to discover their purpose, those with a burning desire to live their vision and a willingness to work with resistance and fears through the Ecology of Self and Voice Dialogue. This is a very special solocast. This solocast is about honoring our ancestors, where I've come from, where you've come from, the Spirit, the Great Spirit that guides all things. And the mother, the Mother Earth, who has supported us from Day One. You know, this solocast was probably the most requested solocast I've ever received. I probably had more people that direct messaged me and texted me and said, “We want to know, Josh. We want to know what was it like after you did a 10 day traditional Native American Vision Quest.” And I am here to say that I have touched death with two hands. I have touched death with two hands and I'm back. I am back from the great beyond and my 41st birthday. I have lessons and light that I'm ripe with this heart that is beating in my chest ever since I took my first, my first breath out of my mother, Mary, my heart has cracked wide open and the river of emotions I feel after 10 days in deep nature in north Idaho, 20 minutes, north of Priest River, Idaho, the emotions I feel for humanity and for our Great Mother are unsurpassed in all of the potent medicine that I have ever received. Josh Trent (01:29): The overwhelming message was that you and I, we can choose to live at the pace of nature, or we can choose to die trying to fight her and just let that land because one of the things that Tim Corcoran and Mark Tollefson, my two guides, at Purpose Mountain that guided us - all seven of us. I went with seven people to this Native American Vision Quest, which I'm going to unpack. I'm going to inspire you with my story with this incredible story where I got to touch death with two hands. One of the things that Tim and Mark talk about in the Quest is that you are held by the Great Mother and just feel into that when you're held by the Great Mother you're never lost. And one of the things that we can all do, if you're ever lost, if you're ever feeling like life has kicked you and a relationship has ended, your job has plummeted. Josh Trent (02:29): A friendship has gone up in flames. If you are ever lost, if we are ever lost, take your deep breath and stop. That isn't in wildlife. And in search and rescue, there was a phrase that many trackers go by, and that is, If you are lost in the forest stop, because someone is trying to find you. And how is that a beautiful metaphor for how we live our life and how we have our relationships when we are lost, stop, just stop. And that is the one great gift that we all can receive from a 10 - day Native American Vision Quest. But when you stop, you have to be prepared. You have to be prepared to feel all the feelings that were below the surface that are poking through that you didn't want to feel that were uncomfortable. And that's okay because in the stillness, there is wisdom. Josh Trent (03:32): There is wisdom in the sadness. There is wisdom in the fear. There is wisdom in the anger and below the fear there is really just love. After coming back from these 10 days, which I'm going to share. I promise I'm going to share. I truly no longer fear death at 41 years old on my 41st birthday. And now just two weeks since I've been back, I do not fear death anymore, but there is a deep sadness because below the fear below the veil of that fear is really just a garden of sadness, rich with the seeds of truth, the truth of sadness that one day I, you, we will no longer be able to practice our gratitude to be in gratitude for the gift of growing and fulfilling my purpose right here with Wellness Force to love and be of service and have kindness for my family, community, Great Spirit and Mother Earth, you know, being angry that we die. Josh Trent (04:28): This is another gift from the Quest: being angry that we die comes from the egoic grasp of self-righteousness. Feel into that. When you are angry at the mystery, when you are angry at Great Spirit, when you are angry at nature, how egoic, how much hubris are you sitting on a golden seat on, on a cloud of hubris. Being grateful before we die is actually the gift because we're not making it out of here alive, my friend, We're all going to the great beyond and being grateful before we die, this is what yields a life worth living, where we can truly live while we honor the great mystery. We are all from the earth, not on the earth and we are all home. To begin the story, there is a beautiful saying in prayer that comes from the language and the tradition of the Lakota people. Josh Trent (05:22): And it is, “All are related, are all my relations.” And it's a wonderful reminder of our interconnectedness here on earth and of the Spirit within all beings. I'm inspired by Nancy Windheart - to her phrase of all my relations. I honor you in this circle of life with me today. I am grateful for this opportunity to acknowledge you in this prayer, to the Creator for the ultimate gift of life. I thank you to the mineral nation that is built and maintained my bones and all foundations of life experience. I thank you to the Plant Nation that sustains my organs and body and gives me healing herbs for sickness. I thank you to the Animal Nation that feeds me from your own flesh and offers your loyal companionship in this walk of life. I thank you and to the Human Nation that shares my path as a soul upon the sacred wheel of earthly life, Josh Trent (06:20): I thank you. To the Spirit Nation that guides me invisibly through the ups and downs of life and carrying the torch of light throughout the ages, I thank you. To the four winds of change and growth, I thank you. You are my relations, my relatives. Without them, who I would not live. We are in this circle of life together, coexisting, codependent, co-creating our destiny. One, not more important than the other one nation evolving from the other, and yet each dependent upon the one and above and the one below. All of us are a part of this great mystery. And I thank you, God, I thank you Great Mystery for this life. And you can feel the tears in my voice because when I flew out on my 41st birthday, I started my Vision Quest at the Austin airport. And it was my birthday and I had my mask off and a woman ran up to me with a fairly large, protruding, obese stomach with two masks on her face and a large 64 ounce soda in her hand, screaming at me saying, Josh Trent (07:28): “Sir, sir, sir…You need to wear your mask.” And I just simply turned to her, on my birthday, and I said, “You're okay. It's okay.” And I could see the fear in her eyes, and I can see the fear in so many of our eyes, not just when we're out in public and we see a reflection of self and of love and others. But when we look in the mirror, because I know that any person that I come in contact with and right there on Day Number One, I was given a beautiful gift to beautiful truths. And that is, No one is coming to save you. And that's the great news because you can choose to save yourself. And number two, no one is inherently out to get you; the majority of the fabrication of the egoic mind, the mind that doesn't want you to feel it doesn't want you to try hard and not get there. Josh Trent (08:21): It doesn't want you to open up to a lover or yourself or your community and be vulnerable people because you've been hurt before. Well, these two truths are self-evident and of course in special situations, use your intuition. Sometimes someone is out to get you, but overall, overall, no, when you are in rational and irrational fear, when your mind is making up stories, that's a rational fear. And that was the first gift, you know, before any ceremony, it has been said that the moment ceremony starts is when you accept the invitation. And that is what happened for me. The very moment I arrived at the Austin airport on Day One, actually it was Day Zero. I didn't even gone to Idaho yet. I was already given a gift, a gift of these two truths that no one is coming to save me and no one is inherently out to get me. And so I had to put on the mask to fly on the airplane so that I could go receive my medicine. And I felt a well of anger in me, which I'll touch on later. That well of anger is really just sadness. And if we really feel into this, our society is sick. Krishnamurti says, “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” Josh Trent (09:37): And how is this not the most radical objective truth you could ever hear? So, there I am on the plane feeling into this sickness, the sickness, not just of society, but if I'm being honest, which from this moment forward, I am, and I've always done my best. But from this moment forward, my heart is cracked wide open because I had to take an inventory, not just in the Quest, not just out there in nature with no flashlight, no tent, no knife, no fire, just myself, my breath, my thoughts, a tarp for the rain and the sleeping bag and pad. But I had to take an inventory on that plane. And the inventory said, when did I let go of the wonder? When did I let go of the wonder of life? When did I stop singing? When did I stop dancing? When did I stop telling stories? Josh Trent (10:28): And when did I stop honoring the mystery of life again, Mark and Tim, the Vision Guides said, “Whenever someone's lost in the forest, they must stop. They simply must stop because that is how you will be found.” We all need to stop and slow down and pay attention, put down the phone and head out to nature. This is not a passive drug induced hippy prayer. This is the wish of God, of Great Spirit and our Mother Earth who are watching us destroy the sacredness of community, the sacredness of family, the sacredness of earth with our ego and humorous. We think we know so much better than the energy that created us. Look at how self-righteous we have become. And this is the story. This is the beginning of this story. I arrive at camp with all of these thoughts, going through my mind, the radical realizations, not just on the plane and in the airport, but in the car ride, going out to Priest River, which is a two-hour drive from Spokane, Washington. Josh Trent (11:27): And on the ride out there, I'm with my friend, Julie, who picked me up and took me to the camp. And I started to already feel the ceremony come through. First night, we get introduced to Tim and Mark and Ollie and Hayden, our guides, our co-guides. First night, radical, radical dreams. And this is what you will find when you are called to a 10-day Native American Vision Quest. The structure of the Native American Quest is that for three days, you do a deep soul in inventory. Really. It's a deep soul inventory. You uncover all the ways of being that have been not loving. And this is confronting; you take an inventory of how you've showed up for those you love when you've abandoned yourself. When you felt something in your egoic self, and use that to override your animal, self, your heart self, your true self, your loving self. Josh Trent (12:24): And what came through for me was just this unchecked responsibility and poor management of my stress because I have been white knuckling. And I know you may feel me. If you are like this, are you the kind of person that white knuckles, because you will get what you want at all costs. Well, that's been me too, and I will never forget this moment around the fire in those first three days, really looking at the flames on my hand and my body and knowing that I am an infinite being who chose to be here and a finite existence. And that first night rocked my world because I knew that I was going to get deep healing on that mountain. And my inner young man was calling me. And so, in this Native American Quest, the first three days are ego unraveling and exercises and journaling, and really being with all the parts of yourself, you know, (Carl) Jung talks about the shadow and in all of us is a shadow, a shadow filled with demons, but guess what? Josh Trent (13:27): Those demons just want love. And this is the ultimate gift of the Vision Quest, because when you go after those first three days and you walk out into nature, I will never forget going up to the campsite at first light woken up by wolves, howling at it. Must've been 4:45 in the morning. I mean, you could barely see the crack of light over the horizon. And I'm in my little tent. And I just hear these wolves screaming cause they had gotten a fresh kill on the very first day of our four day process, where we went out into nature. After we had selected our site after we had been stripped down after we had done our sweat lodges, where you sweat to the point where you didn't even know your body could sweat that much, the singing, the prayer, the asking for forgiveness. And this is really what we are all wanting. Josh Trent (14:20): We want to forgive ourselves. We want God and Great Spirit and our mother, our Great Mother to forgive us. And this is the peace that we're all seeking. And that is the peace that I was awoken by, by animals in nature that get their kill because after the kill there is peace. And after there are certain parts of the older self that are killed, there is peace. And I felt that peace, but I also felt that terror way deep in my heart, there is nothing like waking up to wolves on a fresh kill in nature. As the sun barely cracks the horizon to put the fear of God in your soul. And as I walked up to the group and the fire and I crossed the threshold, walking deep into nature, about 30 minutes away from camp and camp had no cell service. I drew a box with sticks as I arrived to my site at the bottom of the hill and I placed my first stick vertically in that box. Josh Trent (15:18): And I knew, I knew that that was the beginning of something where I would never be the same. And in that first night I had radical, radical sex nightmares. It actually, it actually started in the morning because you go out at first light on Day One. So the first three days was ego stripping and really ego inventory, soul inventory. Then there's four days. And when you go out for those four days on a traditional Quest, you have cold weather clothes, a sleeping mat, a tarp, and a sleeping bag and four gallons of water. That's it. So we're talking about no fire, no tent, no knife, no flashlight. You have to learn to befriend the dark. And that very first night I made it - really wells me up with emotion, just feeling it. Now I went out in the morning at first light and I was exhausted. Josh Trent (16:15): I hadn't slept the night before. I was nervous about being out in nature - cold with no food for four days and only water, no one to talk to; just myself. And I sat there after I had woken up from really the most tremendous nightmare, I think I had ever had. And it came from when I was foolish, when I was doing my best, but when I was foolish, when I chose to engage with a prostitute in Thailand where I was able to see where I was still not free, where I was still not free because I was battling with my own shame around sex and addiction and mistruths, and I needed some deep healing with my inner young man. And so in this dream, I was watching myself, abandon myself many years prior to the quest, looking at how to the public I wanted to, to be perceived as having an altogether, but deep within my own heart battling with the most visceral addiction, when it came to not feeling safe in my own skin, you could ever imagine. Josh Trent (17:22): And on that first night, I let go of the war, which is what we all deserve - to let go of the war with ourselves. We can only heal ourselves when we choose that we're worthy of doing so. And when you are just like, I was put into nature to be held by the arms of a grandmother that you couldn't even imagine how strong she is - how loving, how peaceful she is. That is who we are from. That is who holds us. I woke up and I was terrified because I thought, "Oh my God, is this real?" I mean, when you're out there, the veil between dream and the veil between life here in the 3D is super thin. I mean, there were times throughout those four days where I didn't even know if I was alive or if I was dead or if it was a dream. Josh Trent (18:13): I mean, it's, it is absolutely surreal. It blows away any mushroom, Ayahuasca, even multiple breathwork sessions I've had - puts them all in a pale light in comparison to the brutal potent medicine of Mother Nature at her finest. And that is at just peace because there is peace in my heart now as I've come home. But that peace only came on the other side of me waking up crying because of the pain of abandoning myself years prior and learning how to love this young man. Learning how to love my shame. I flashed back when I was sitting there as the sun rose and I was crying and I was just so grateful. I was so grateful for my life. I was so grateful that the nightmare wasn't true, even though the nightmare had occurred many years prior, when I chose to abandon the screaming voice of my inner young man. And that is the forgiveness that I deserved. So I sat down with young Josh and I sat down with my son. I sat down with my son next to me and I spoke to him about the power of forgiveness, the power of love and forgiveness. Josh Trent (19:34): I will never forget five years ago when I had Gay Hendricks on the podcast and we're going to be having him on the podcast again. So stay tuned for that. And he told me, "Josh, you have to learn how to love your pain. If you want peace, you have to learn how to love your pain." I had no idea what Gay Hendricks was talking about. And now I do, because I know from my own experience where I had a three, four, even five dimensional conversation with my seven-year-old self, specifically my 13-year-old self, when I found pornography for the first time, I think my dad had a Playboy on the table. And then from there I got VHS and then DVDs and then the adult film store. And then, you know, all holes, barred when the laptop got pulled out and high-speed internet came into the picture. Josh Trent (20:22): That was exactly the safety that I was seeking outside myself, that I love my parents. They did the best they could, but they did not teach me how to be loving and how to be comfortable in my own skin. And so the forgiveness I have for myself is also the loving and powerful forgiveness I have for them. And so I know now that we can only heal generational pain when we choose that we are worthy of doing so, we can only heal generational pain through forgiveness. Through forgiveness. Forgiveness is the antidote to fear. Forgiveness is the antidote to hatred and forgiveness is not something you can read in a book or read in a card. Forgiveness is something that you have to learn through experience. It's how to embody, how to cry through, how to bleed through, how to suffer through and all we can ever do is open the door to our family to enter. Josh Trent (21:17): So, I asked that first night, and this is just the first night. I have way more to tell you. The very first night I asked at the altar of freedom without expectation for all my relations to enter my grandfather, Mauro, my grandmother, Marie, my grandfather, Gene, my grandmother, Louise, my brother, James, my mother, Mary, all my relations. My father, Daniel; everyone is welcome. Please forgive me, please forgive me. And I wept, I wept like a little boy and it was the most healing experience that I've ever had because finally, all the things that I had been searching for with Ayahuasca and with mushrooms and with "ceremony." All the time, it had been under my two feet and that was, I needed the potent medicine of nature of Mother Nature to ground me into her and total silence without distraction in nature for a hundred hours without food and only water so that I could actually understand what she has been telling me all along. Josh Trent (22:23): And that is, "I'm home." I am home. We are all home here. We are not on the earth. We are from the earth and I wept. And on night, Number Two, I gave my seed back to Mother Earth. A lot of sexual shame, a lot of resentment of my decisions. I turned to those and I learned how to love them. I learned how to truly love them for what they are. They are my protector, because if I did not have pornography, if I did not have a way for me to feel comfortable in my own skin, well, then I wanted to leave my skin which is death. And so we have to touch death in order to feel the truth of life. And this is the purity that I gave to myself. I'm laying maybe 20 feet above my site. And I'm up on a mountain in Northern Idaho and it's freezing. Josh Trent (23:21): And then when the sun comes up, it's emotional because the darkness has been lifted. And I spent most of my day, you know just being with my thoughts and laying in the sun and kind of chasing the sun around as it would shoot through the trees and little patches on the ground. And there was one moment where I just asked with a humble heart and I said, "Great Spirit. What will you have me do with Wellness Force? What will you have me do with Wellness Force?" Because we have hit this place with Wellness Force where we're growing, but we're not growing to the pace that can sustain the engine for the long-term. Josh Trent (23:59) And I said, "Great Spirit, what would you like me to do? What would you like me to do with Wellness Force? Do you want me to burn this entire thing to the ground? Cause I will if that's what you want me to do." And I, with tears in my eyes, I looked up to the sky and I will never forget this moment. And I heard this voice, this little voice, and the voice said, "Just keep going, Just keep going." And I knew exactly what that meant. Just keep going and trust and love yourself as you go. Josh Trent (24:34): And from an incredible connection of forgiveness and healing from the nightmare that I had had that gave me the gratitude for being with Carrie and having my son here in the world and just getting to be here. I walked over to the campsite. I pulled down my pants and for the first time, since I was 13 years old, I looked down at my cock and I connected the energy of my cock to my heart. And I connected my heart to my head. And I said, I am pure. I give my seed back to Mother Earth. I just kept saying this over and over again. This is pure. This is pure. I come into the earth for my wife and son and family and made this serve as a reminder for me that God's love, God's love - The love of Great Spirit is what ties the sex energy from my cock to my heart to my head. Josh Trent (25:26): And as I came into the earth, I cried in the most profound sexual healing I have ever had in my life because I knew that I had come back home. I knew how powerful it was to be here right now. I felt the pride in my heart for choosing to reconnect with the love of the child. And I had this visualization of my lower self as I watched my lower self die. And I sent him love for the journey. It's this little boy holding a black crocodile. I can see him right now. I promise I'm not crazy. I mean, if you understand shadow and archetypes and going deep into the soldiering process, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about, but in nature, it is so much more magnified. And I looked at young Josh and I told him from the heart of a father, it's okay, you can rest. Josh Trent (26:13): And I thought of Mark Groves when we did our episode out there and he said, "The child can rest. The adult is here." The child can rest. The adult is here. And my little Josh with his black crocodile, he walked off into the distance and he looked back and I sent him love for the journey. And I asked for forgiveness and I cried again. I mean, I never, I never cried so much in my entire life as to the degree that I cried during this Vision Quest. And this is Part One, stay tuned for Part Two. As I unpack Day Two, Day Three, and Day Four, and bring home even more wisdom for the road ahead. And if this inspires you, if you feel this in your heart, some of what I've gone through and what I've shared about truly embodying forgiveness has been medicine for you. Josh Trent (27:09): Let me know. Wherever you're watching this, post in the comments. Share it with somebody. Part two is coming very soon. And before I do the Part Two, I want to ask you if you'll just take a breath with me and just connect to the part of your heart that was touched by this Part One of the Vision Quest, because really what this is, is about touching death, touching the fact that we are not here forever. And so if there's anything meant to die today, well, then turn to it and do the work so it can die. It is not just the shame that keeps us hostage. It is our gathering of evidence that we should be guilty that continues to burn the fire of the shame. Shame is much different than guilt because with shame comes evidence that you're not enough, something that we put on ourselves. Josh Trent (28:06): The shame stories of like, "I'm not good enough because my parents told me I wasn't," or "I'm stupid. Cause the teacher told me that," or you know, "I'm fat. Cause my boyfriend and my girlfriend told me that." We are so driven by shame. But guess what? Shame is so much different than guilt. Guilt is a feeling you get when you did something you felt was wrong. Guilt is when you abandon yourself, when you abandon someone you love or you perceive you did something wrong and in Part Two of this quest and this story about really honoring our ancestors, this Rite of Passage that so many men, so many women, never got the gift of receiving. This is what we will do go into in Part Two. So until I see you in Part Two, I'm wishing you love and wellness. Build Immunity. Breathe Deeply. This week's show is with Tim Corcoran, who is the founder of Purpose Mountain. Tim offers Nature Based Purpose Guidance to support people with a love for wild nature who feel a deep yearning and a burning desire to discover their purpose. Tim is a leader of men's groups, holistic rites of passage for boys & men, and wilderness vision quests. Healing the cultural rift between the mainstream and indigenous cultures, transformational consciousness work, the spiritual journey, ancestral work, deep nature connection, family and health are all deep commitments in his life. Tim is a heart centered father of two brilliant boys and husband to a magnificent wife, and lives in pristine Sandpoint, Idaho, USA. In this show we spoke about how boys in this modern culture lack the guidance and initiation required to become healthy men, how this is in contrast to how humans have evolved and what parents can do to create rites of passage for their boys. We were joined by a special guest star... my son, Felix, who was the instigator of this conversation and had questions of his own that he wanted to ask Tim. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: Between the ages of 12-14, so much is changing for a male human being in terms of the brain and hormones, there's a yearning to know and test themselves and be met by someone who can guide them in that testing. Without having the right initiation guidance, boys will push edges in ways that are potentially destructive to themselves, their families and communities. Boys taking part in guided initiation - by another party, not the parents - gives them the opportunity to discover themselves and their unique expression and bring those gifts back to their communities in a way that can be received and valued. The difference it makes to boys who have journeyed through initiation can and does change the path they would have walked - and an initiation is only ever as good as the cultural container it's held in. We all need true community. Did you know I took my son on a 5-day father’s son wilderness survival trip a few months ago? It was so amazing. And, did you also know connecting with nature by just taking a brisk walk at your local park is good for improving your mental health and emotional well-being? Just stepping away from my phone and laptop for 5 days was the kind of digital detox I needed. Back when I was lost in my life, nature was always there for me. Nature is a big family value of ours. That’s why I wanted to take my son on this powerful trip. Good nature time, good father-son bonding time. Our guide on the trip was so solid, I wanted to have him on the podcast to share more of why it’s so key to get outside. This guy has a ton of experience and it was so great to jam about nature, connection, and purpose. If you’re interested to know how immersing in nature can expand your awareness and find your true calling, you’ll want to check out the podcast. What is the relationship between nature connection and the process of discovering ones purpose? In this episode I explore this question together with Tim Corcoran who is a purpose guide and a wilderness guide. We discuss topics such as ecological awakening, soul initation and soul image. We also explore the methods that are used in nature-based purpose discovery, such as the soul quest, the soul wander and the soul sit. Tim shares stories from some of his own vision quests, and he also shares his soul image and the story of how he came to find it. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and I hope that you will too! Tim Corcoran advises law firms on how to improve the business delivery side of things. One of the positive aspects of the pandemic has been the ability for firms to actually look at the processes of their business, and not just focusing on the tools. As we begin to develop a hybrid office where some people will be working in the office, and some will continue to work remotely, it will test how good our management skills really are. Maybe now we'll give some real management training. Remember, we may all be In Seclusion, but we're in this together. I first met Tim Corcoran when I was looking for a local plant expert to teach me more about wild plant foraging. Not only did he come to my house to record , but we also shot a host of videos in which he taught me and my boys how to harvest plants from our land such as wild nettle, mullein, comfrey, oregon grape root, wild mint and beyond. This guy is a true wealth of wilderness knowledge. As a matter of fact, each year I send my children to attend his wilderness survival camp and also his winter adventure camp. Tim himself is a heart centered father of two brilliant boys and husband to a magnificent wife. Recently, I was talking to Tim about the concept of vision quests and rites of passage - for both youth and adults alike, and he told me about a new program he is creating to achieve just that - a program based on a concept he calls "Purpose Mountain". Tim is the founder of Purpose Mountain, where he offers Nature Based Purpose Guidance to support people with a love for wild nature who feel a deep yearning and a burning desire to discover their purpose, as well as work with resistance and fears through the Ecology of Self and Voice Dialogue. Tim is a leader of men’s groups, holistic rites of passage for boys, and wilderness quests, guiding and initiating men and boys into the new paradigm of the mature masculine. Since 1999, Tim has dedicated his life towards consciously furthering this vision of living in balance with the Earth, community, family, and self. Healing the cultural rift between the mainstream and indigenous cultures, transformational consciousness work, the spiritual journey, ancestral work, deep nature connection, family and health are all deep commitments in his life. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why men and women these days suffer from lack of a proper transition from childhood into adulthood...10:00 -Ancestral societies that have a rite of passage, such as the Australian aborigine walkabout...12:00 -The difference between a vision quest and a rite of passage...17:45 -The right age to embark upon a rite of passage, and why adults should also do a rite of passage...23:00 -Tim's story of how a moose nearly killed him during his rite of passage but eventually became part of his growing experience...44:30 -What a rite of passage actually looks like for a boy vs. a man...55:30 -Why Tim refers to his rite of passage as "Purpose Mountain"...1:09:00 -And much more! Good2bSocial founder Guy Alvarez chats with Tim Corcoran about law firm marketing and business development. Tim clearly delineates the difference between the two and stresses that although law firm marketers are strategic partners of the business, the overall strategic marketing leadership comes from the executive committee at the firm. Marketers have the power to produce the metrics and the framework for strategies that can help lawyers understand the value of strategic marketing. Partners then must recognize where spending may be inefficient and allow professional marketers to make big decisions. Full shownotes at Good2bSocial
