Bleach is also widely used for disinfection of surfaces. The exact ways chlorine kills microbes aren't fully understood, but the main reasons are believed to be: oxidation of thiols of enzymes ring chlorination of amino acids direct DNA damage Obviously, high levels of chlorine are bad for humans. Chlorine gas was used as a chemical weapon in WW1, and drinking bleach can kill people. As for longer exposure to lower levels, studies have found associations between lung damage and use of indoor swimming pools, but the extent to which harmful effects of chlorine have thresholds from saturation of enzymes is still unclear. Dietary studies are notoriously hard to get good results from, and studying chlorinated water has similar issues. Studies have concluded that, eg, over a few weeks, chlorinated water doesn't affect lipid metabolism. But is that what you'd expect to see? If there were effects, what would they be? effects of ingested chlorine Engineers try to minimize levels of some compounds in water that can react with chlorine to produce toxic substances, such as chloramines and chloroform. But...there are organic compounds in the stomach. What about reactions of chlorine after it's consumed? Stomachs are acidic. That means amines are mostly protonated and unlikely to react, but other chlorination reactions are catalyzed. My understanding is that the main types of chlorine reaction in stomachs are: oxidation of thiols (this doesn't concern me much) phenol chlorination (eg 3-chlorotyrosine production) tryptophan oxidation double bond oxidation to halohydrins Chlorotyrosine production happening is intuitive, and it's been validated by some rat studies. But the topic of reactions of chlorine in stomachs hasn't been studied very much in general. What happens to chlorotyrosine and halohydrins afterwards? In cells, aliphatic chlorinated compounds tend to have chlorine replaced with a ketone group by enzymes. For example, dichloromethane becomes formyl chloride which decomposes to carbon monoxide and HCl, which are less toxic than products from other chloromethanes, making it the least toxic of them. Obviously it's also possible for halocarbons to react spontaneously with amines before an enzyme gets to them; that's less likely with chlorine than bromine, but any amount is still bad. As for chlorotyrosine...I'm not sure. Yes, people have examined metabolism of chlorotyrosine, and found eg a significant amount of 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, which indicates to me that it might be dechlorinated during decarboxylation of 3-chlorohydroxyphenylpyruvate with some sort of quinone methide intermediate. But that's not really the question, is it? The question is what the effects of chlorotyrosine being present are. That chlorine atom isn't likely to spontaneously react, but how much chlorotyrosine is incorporated into proteins? How does that incorporation affect protein effects? Does chlorotyrosine have some direct signalling effects? How big are the net impacts? I don't know. At this point, I'm probably in the top 100 worldwide for understanding of molecular toxicology, sad as that is to say, and my knowledge here feels inadequate. When macrophages "eat" pathogens, they will sometimes generate hypochlorite in the phagosome. A little bit of that hypochlorite leaks, and that leakage is a significant fraction of harm from infection. Chlorotyrosine is associated with damage from immune system hypochlorite generation, but it's not clear to what extent it's causative. Then, there are all the other phenols that could be chlorinated. Government water regulator Taumata Arowai has advised it's declining the council's first chlorine exemption applications. The remaining 20 percent of the Christchurch and Banks Peninsula water supply is now required to be chlorinated, which will take a number of weeks. Mayor Phil Mauger is disappointed for the people of Christchurch, especially for the council members who worked hard to apply for an exemption. The NIEHS Superfund Research Program (SRP) is hosting a Progress in Research webinar series to showcase new breakthroughs to advance sustainable solutions for hazardous substances in the environment. The three-part series will feature SRP individual research projects funded in 2020, who are incorporating new advances in materials science to optimize bioremediation of contaminants in soil, sediment, or water. In each session, awardees will describe their research projects, accomplishments, and next steps. The second session will showcase novel tools and improved techniques to clean up sites contaminated with chlorinated compounds. Florida State University researchers are designing sorbents to clean up groundwater contaminated with 1,4-dioxane and chlorinated volatile organic contaminants (VOCs). Consisting of a set of repeating cyclic macromolecules with unique geometry and internal chemistry, the sorbents can form specific microbe-contaminant complexes with only selected molecules, such as 1,4-dioxane. At Oregon State University, investigators are developing a strategy to use bacteria encapsulated with a slow-release compound in hydrogel beads to break down complex mixtures of contaminants, such as VOCs and 1,4-dioxane. Using materials science and laboratory studies, the team aims inform long-term bioremediation solutions to treat a broad range of contaminants. Researchers at the University of Iowa are investigating how activated carbon can be used to enhance the performance of bacteria used to break down halogenated pollutants, such as chlorinated ethenes. By re-engineering carbon materials, they hope to influence the composition of the degrading microbial community and increase their ability to break down mixtures of halogenated contaminants. A team at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County is developing carbon-based sorbent materials to enhance the ability of bacteria to break down mixtures of chlorinated organic contaminants, such as chloroethene and polychlorinated biphenyls, in groundwater and sediments. They hope to integrate their laboratory findings with advanced site models to assess field-scale remedial applications. Live animal export is a controversial issue - animal rights activists have long wanted the trade to stop. The Government is promising a consultation on a ban on "excessively long journeys for slaughter and fattening". All the main ferry companies currently refuse to ship UK reared live animals, but the ‘Joline’ - a ship run by a Dutch company - transports live animals across the Channel from Ramsgate in Kent. We hear from protesters at the port. There are worries about traffic jams in the event of delays at the ports after the end of the Brexit Transition period. In Kent, there are concerns for the livestock heading for Ashford Market - which deals with around 5000 sheep and 500 cattle every Tuesday. And chlorinated chicken has become inextricably linked with the debate around trade after Brexit. Would a free trade deal with the US mean food produced to lower environmental and welfare standards would be imported into the UK? We hear from the outgoing US Secretary of Agriculture. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:  Jen: Dr. Cabral, firstly I want to thank you for providing a place where you share your wealth of knowledge so that we can learn from you, understand the science and make the best choices to become our best selves.I have been listening to you for a couple of months now, found you through FASTer Way and met you at our conference last December. I did some labs myself and am taking steps to find the root cause of my symptoms and get better. My question today, however, is about one of my kids. I have a 16 year old son who is a competitive swimmer and easily spends 15 – 20 hours a week in a chlorinated pool. He is very fit, very little body fat, eats fairly healthy (although we are working to improve that – a 16 yr old athlete eats a lot!). I know that chlorine is not good for us and can disrupt our hormones. I read that as a halogen, chlorine, fluorine and bromine are similar enough to iodine that they can be absorbed by the thyroid instead of iodine and displace the iodine. Spending this much time in the water, what is the best course of action to take? Should we put him on the Daily Thyroid Balance, will this be enough to help? Should we test Thyroid levels first, are there foods he can eat to help minimize the effect of all this extra chlorine, any other protocols to consider? Jenna; I'm currently in the IHP program and loving it! Question about exercise: I myself have been an avid yogi my whole life and so I find myself doing an hour vinyasa class a 2-3 times a week so my first question is whether that would be considered a workout day in your eyes or if you think more is needed, especially since my body is very accustomed to yoga. The other thing I wanted your opinion on is barre, if you are familiar with this workout (mainly women do it) as it's micro movements of the muscles instead of full range, and also very high rep/ low weight during the arms section of the class. The instructors encourage shaking of the muscles as a sign that we're fatiguing the muscles to their limit, and is explained as a good thing. Thoughts? Cindy: Dr. Cabral, I am “the Cindy” from Cabral Concept 1339 (Oct 6, 2019). You said that using DNP Level 2 or 3 - for 4 months would raise one’s levels to normal. Well, I believed you… and I still do bc I also took your recommendation to test. It has taken 4 years, but I did it! I have completed EN CBO, EN heavy metal detox, EN Mold Detox, and several EN 7 day detoxes. Fatigue with brain fog and migraines have been real problems for me. But I rarely have it now. I’ve used EN DN Protocol, level 2, sometimes level 3, consistently for over a year (since moving back to the U.S.), and on and off for about 2 years… and I feel blessed! And finally, I ran the big 5! On Nov 3rd, I will get the results. My guess is … probably still some mold - since I seem very sensitive in that area… and hormones! I still sneeze a lot (histamine issue) if I don’t take zyrtec. And I will always need to focus on detox pathways since I am MTHFR positive with 70% decreased enzyme activity. Thyroid ultrasound shows my thyroid is small/flat… but I believe it still works because my thyroid medication has decreased. I do have a question related to the SMART DNA test I ran through EN. With methylation (MTHFR) and Liver Detoxification (COMT), the lab states “2 and 16 Urinary Oestrogen Metabolites.” ?????? Cindy: I do have a question related to the  DNA test I ran through EN. Cindy: Another question… I am probably pitta-vata in body structure. But after 2 years of poor sleep, reduced exercise, increased stress, and 4 years of living in a moldy house… I accumulated 7 prescription medications, brain fog, fatigue, and 25 extra pounds. I have taken thyroid medication for over 20 years, but never felt any symptoms until my 40s. After 4 years of learning and focusing on real health, I feel great! I used Fatlosity for 5 months, lost a few pounds, gained it back, lost it again, kept it off… and then seemed stuck. I eat healthy & live a healthy lifestyle. I have energy to exercise and don’t crash afterwards! I believe my weight struggle is hormonal now, so the big 5 labs will give me direction in that. I still have 10-15 pounds to lose. I still have pain in the bottom and top of my feet, at times and recently headaches have started again. These headaches occurred while I was slowly losing fat. Many times, while having a headache, I would use a coffee enema and yes, my HA would go away. Is it possible that these HA were caused by toxins in my fat being released? (& Inability to Lean Out) [21:14] Emily says: Hi Robb & Nicki - Thanks so much for the podcast and all the amazing information you put out there! I look forward to new episodes every week. I'm feeling really stuck and I'm hoping you can help. I'm dealing with 2 issues - inability to lose belly fat and a wonky period. I included quite a bit of info below but feel free to skip over anything that might be superfluous. I'm 5'10" and currently weigh about 165lbs. My most recent DEXA was 18.8%. I carry ALL my extra weight in my stomach and back. My lower body is very lean. This has been true my entire life. I don't need a six pack but I'd really love to lean out a bit more. For most of the past year, I was eating a calorie restricted moderate carb (110g-170g), low fat (35-65g), and mod. protein (150g) diet. I was leaning out for a bit and then hit a long plateau and got burnt out. Hit a low weight of about 157 and ended that diet stint back up around 162 (which is pretty much where I had started but my body comp did shift a bit). I agonized over my macros and was hungry throughout the day but I had regular periods. Looking to try something different, I started eating a high protein (180-220g) and low carb (20-50g) diet with fats between 80-125g in April. I did a very short stint on carnivore (only about 10 days strict) but found that it made me quite constipated (which is something I struggle with from time to time anyway). Still I lean heavily on protein at all my meals now. And after some initial water weight loss, I started to feel fluffy and the number on the scale started to rise. I don't have mood swings around hunger anymore (which is awesome) but I do find that I sometimes feel hungry again within 2-3 hours of a fairly large meal (600-700 cals) - not the 5-6 hours that the internet tells me to expect. That said, I don't feel the same panic and mood swings with hunger that I did eating higher carb. Generally, I feel really good with this WOE but my cycle has become really long - about 50 days between periods (which I suppose is technically considered missing a period). Training has been consistent - I lift weights 3-4x per week (about 75-90 minutes including my warm-up) and do 1 short day of assault bike sprints (most weeks). I also try to get in extra walking when I can. Sleep is ok. I get 7-8hrs per night on average. I don't really drink and cook the vast vast majority of my own food. I drink lots of water and salt my food healthily. At this point I've listened to so many podcasts and watched so many youtube videos my head is spinning - super high protein to lose fat, HF keto for hormones, add carbs to get your period back - I just don't know what to do! I feel like I'm trying to do a little bit of everything and thereby doing nothing at all. Would love your take. Thank you in advance. 2. Learning Capoeira [30:32] Dan says: Robb & Nicki, salutations! I was wondering what advice you'd have for a person starting to learn capoeira. I'm 39 and have strength trained in some form or fashion for most of my life, but am lacking in the mobility and coordination departments. How would you structure your training week (strength, mobility, & practicing capoeria) to gain a decent level of proficiency in a reasonable amount of time? The capoeira world is so new to me, so I'm not sure how to apply some 80/20 principles to come up the learning curve quickly, not look like a penguin doing the ginga, and have some kicks that are higher than waist level. :) Thanks so much! Recently I sent in a sample (and received results) with Viome (https://www.viome.com/) and wondered if you are familiar with it? Side note: I recently participated in a study that is studying Microbiome & MS patients (I was asked to do this the day after I sent in my Viome kit!) Anyways... the results with Viome were interesting because it notes foods to Avoid, Minimize, Enjoy & Superfoods, based on your gut. The Avoids I knew due to MS, Inflammation & Paleo. I have listened to you all the way from the start and whilst biochemistry and how it relates to food forms the core of what you do, you also speak about other subject matters that are relevant to the matters at hand with one of those being economics and political economy. Before I heard you speak about the importance of free markets for food production and how this all relates to food quality and the types of food we eat I used to be a bit of a leftie. The reasons for that is that I never thought about any of it and neither did I come across anyone who was able to put forward a well thought argument that challenged my views which it is fair to say were developed, I would say indoctrinated into me, from my education which has included a number of individuals who espouse postmodern neo-Marxism which I am now proud to say is a load of guff. Now my views would never have been changed if it wasn’t for listening to you and what you have had to say as you challenged my views. This allowed me to reappraise them. Whilst I do not class myself as a libertarian, more of a classical liberal, I now believe and indeed extol the importance of free markets, liberty and individuality. When I look back it was always something I believed in I just needed to hear it from someone who was able to put forward a rational basis for why they are important. So when I hear you say you sometimes dial back on giving your views on politics and economics because of some snowflakery twits who get all triggered, please just remember that there will be more people out there like me who have had their views changed for the better because of you. Even those who haven’t will most likely respect you for having an opinion that gets them thinking.) I am from the UK and I voted for Brexit having been involved with the Brexit Party in order to help make it happen. One of the reasons why I voted for Brexit was so that my country could escape from an undemocratic and centralised foreign entity that is run by eurocrats being able to rule over us and control our laws. If we get Brexit right we will be able to set our own rules, govern ourselves, and strike our own free trade deals, including one with America. Whilst I believe in free trade and many of those who voted for Brexit do so too, and like me want to sign up for a free trade deal with the US, most of them are completely ignorant of American food production and why signing up for a free trade deal that involves US agri-food will not be done on free trade basis due to the subsidies your government gives to its farmers. Chlorinated chicken is something that repeatedly keeps coming up when discussing a “free” trade deal with the US as an example of why we should not be signing up for such a deal. Many Brexiters then simply countenance such an argument by simply saying we will be able to get cheaper food produce and that it is nothing to worry about as the EU wash their packaged salad in chlorine, both of which I find to be uneducated and naïve retorts. So to the question. What’s the deal with chlorinated chicken and how can I put forward a case to fellow Brexiters who say they believe in free trade why, if it is, a bad thing from both an economic case and also a health point of view? Keep it up Wolfie’s. Jamie 5. High Blood Sugars While in Ketosis? [1:03:37] Shilpa says: Hello Robb and Nicki, I have PCOS and hyperinsulinimia and I am a 46 year old woman. In 2018 my fasting insulin was 17! My doctor refuses to check me so I have no idea what it is currently. In the last 6 weeks I decided to go on a Ketogenic diet and my keto mojo tells me I am in ketosis in the afternoons (between 0.6-1.3 mmol) although my blood sugar sometimes is still 95-105. In the morning however, my meter says I have "low" levels and my blood sugars have consistently been running 95-104. I am puzzled. I have lost weight and I do exercise (10 miles a day of walking and 30 min resistance type work out 3x a week) but cannot get these numbers to budge unless I take berberine. What is happening to me? As a person really concerned with the high insulin I am even more worried that I am not going to get this under control. Welcome to the Whole View, episode 406. (0:27) Stacy is so jazzed about this show. Sarah and Stacy have been talking about it and preparing for it since this show was called the Whole View. Stacy personally is jazz hands about educating a dear loved one on why filtering water is a good idea. To kick things off, Stacy is going to share a little story from their trip last summer. While on the road, Stacy saw what she thought was a fresh spring and encouraged the boys to fill their water bottles. Stacy basically gave her kids dysentery. This is Stacy's story about why water filtration is important. Stacy ran a poll last week and only 21% were on team Stacy and thought it was a harmless stream. What Stacy thinks is fascinating is that it is not just runoff water that is not good for you. Oftentimes our municipal water is not meeting the standards. It is important to understand that, and beyond that, it is important to know what you should be aware of when it comes to water. Crazy times in the world and you and Sarah’s voice is so utterly comforting. Anyway, podcast question! Water intake. I don’t think you guys have done a, 'how much water do we need', podcast episode. A deep dive into this would be really helpful. The standard advice seems to be either one amount for men and one amount for women, or, half your body weight in oz.  Which is correct? Or is there another answer? What about just drinking when thirsty? I also have wondered, how much water did our ancestors drink? I assume the water was maybe harder to come by back then so maybe they were drinking less? This is the assumption I’ve always made and has led to me drinking intuitively, which has more than likely led to me being chronically dehydrated :) I feel like with all the conflicting info, it would be great to hear the science.  By the way Stacy, as a side note, after about a year I finished catching up on the podcast. I know you are sorry, I am not ;). When searching for a water-related episode, I and came upon an episode called Thirsty Brain. I was like, for sure this has to be about how water intake affects our brain. Nope. Lol. But that was a great episode about Matt’s podcast, called Thirsty Brain :) love you guys.   Thanks again for all you do!"   How Much Let's start with how much water. (14:15) This has been a debated topic within the medical and scientific community. The classic 8, 8 oz. glasses a day is actually not enough. However, this original recommendation was based on how much water we lose over the course of a day and was not based on how much we actually need. The question now is, how much water makes us healthy? The latest research suggests that men should consume about 13 cups (104 ounces, or 3 liters) of fluid per day, and women should consume about 9 cups (74 ounces, or 2.2 liters). The reason it is different between men and women is basically a reflection of body size and BMR. This amount is not pure water intake. It includes the water that we get from all sources, factoring in all beverages, and the water we get from food. From there, our needs would shift up if we are highly active, if it is hot out, certain dietary needs, etc. Sarah thought the hunter-gather aspect of Jessica's question was very interesting. So she spent some time trying to track that information down. However, she couldn't find a good estimate. That being said, Sarah did find a really interesting paper looking at human evolution. We only find remains of early humans near water sources, and so we know that early humans tended to congregate near water. Communities were and still are centered around ways of getting water. There has been some anthropological research showing that this might have been very important in human evolution. Our brains use a lot of energy, which creates a lot of metabolic byproducts, which have to be filtered by the liver and kidneys, which increases our need for water to make urine to effectively detoxify. So our ability to grow these awesome brains would have relied on proper hydration, in addition to high-quality food. We can't say how many ounces of water hunter-gathers consumed on average, but we can say that it was very likely that they drank a lot of water and likely drank intuitively.   Intuitive Hydration Studies looking at hydration have been really interesting. (19:56) Overall they show that humans in general as a species are pretty good at drinking intuitively. Studies have come at this from a bunch of different ways, where they have looked at what happens when you have given people free access to water and you measure how much water they drink? In general, people are really good at staying hydrated, provided water is around. On average people will drink about two liters of water per day, just driven by thirst. Which is probably the right amount of water, considering other beverages and water from food sources. There have been studies showing that this is true in different populations. Athletes' performance is best when they just follow their thirst for drinking. 'Follow your thirst' does seem to work best for performance. However, there are a variety of things that have been shown to reduce our thirst relative to our water needs. Which basically means you are not thirsty enough for how much water you need. These people need to focus more on hydration and drink with intention, versus just following thirst. There are a bunch of drugs that are used for cardiovascular disease that impact thirst. Elderly people also tend to end up dehydrated and are do not have strong enough thirst signals for their water needs. Menopause causes this is women and high estrogen in general. Swimming can actually reduce our thirst. Exercising in the heat can also impact our thirst awareness. When Sarah looks at this list this means that there are so many exceptions that overall it is a pretty good idea to at least be mindful of hydration. There are bad things that happen when we don't drink enough water on a regular basis. Stacy shared her experience with her lack of thirst and dehydration.   What Happens if you Don't Drink Enough? What is interesting is that acute dehydration will make you feel extremely ill, but chronic-mild dehydration kind of creeps up on you in terms of the symptoms. (27:03) Like so many chronic things, the human body is remarkable in terms of how it adapts to not feeling good. You can end up not noticing for a while. There has been a huge variety of studies showing that even mild dehydration puts a strain on the kidneys, which can cause high blood pressure, reduced energy, fatigue, constipation, dry skin, and more. What is interesting to Sarah is the number of cognitive issues associated with mild dehydration. It can cause frequent headaches, impair mood, increase anxiety, reduce concentration, impair memory, reduce cognitive performance and it also has a pretty measurable impact on exercise performance. The thing that nerds Sarah out is that our microbiome is sensitive to our hydration status. This is because we have this whole collection of bacterial species that actually live in or attached to the mucus barrier. Sarah explained the mucus layer in greater detail. This is why inadequate hydration can cause constipation. What happens when we are not drinking enough, that the mucus layer gets harder and less viscus. This makes it a less hospitable environment for really important probiotic bacteria. It also makes it a more hospitable environment for pathogens. This has been confirmed in some really interesting animal studies. Acute hydration would include feeling dizzy, rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, extreme fatigue and sleepiness, confusion, and irritability and it can cause things like fainting. You would see severe dehydration in having UTIs, kidney infections, and kidney stones.   Alkaline Water Sarah feels that alkaline water is one of the biggest scams in the health community. (34:48) Alkaline water has an alkaline pH. Commercial alkaline water typically has a pH of 8.8 or higher with high dissolved mineral content, typically calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Alkaline water is known to neutralize stomach acid, which on the surface may sound like an awesome thing for anyone who suffers from acid reflux. However, because the acidity of chyme is a key signal to the pancreas to secrete digestive enzymes and to the gallbladder to secrete bile, neutralizing stomach acid can hinder digestion in a big way! So anything that neutralizes stomach acid actually hinders digestion, which can cause a whole pile of problems. The other thing is the impact on the gut microbiome. If you are neutralizing those acidic molecules with alkaline water, you are actually suppressing the growth of really key probiotic species and increasing the growth of potential pathogens. Studies confirm that drinking alkaline water causes an undesirable shift in gut microbiome composition. One study in mice showed that drinking alkaline water for 4 weeks caused a huge decrease in probiotic Clostridiumspecies with smaller decreases in Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, and a rise in Prevotella. A randomized, controlled cross-over intervention in adult men compared the impact on the gut microbiome of consuming 2 liters per day of alkaline water (pH 9) compared to neutral water (pH 7) for two weeks. While the alkaline water had no effect on overall species diversity or richness, the men benefited from higher hydration levels from neutral pH water, which significantly increased richness by 15% when comparing pre- and post-intervention samples. The benefits of alkaline water that have been measured are probably completed attributed to the fact that many of us are not getting enough calcium or potassium. So we can benefit from getting these in their elemental form dissolved into water.   Spring Water Spring/mineral waters can be slightly acidic. (38:50) Most natural sources of mineral water in the world are acidic, not alkaline. Acidic water, because our gut bacteria love living in an acidic environment, has been shown to improve the gut microbiome to reduce a diabetes-associated microbiome. It also improves the growth of probiotic species, at least in animal studies. So it is much more important to look for mineral water or to add mineral drops to your water. Sarah adds mineral drops to her water before she drinks it. There is definitely benefit to mineral content, but that alkaline water is not doing your gut any favors. Stacy has experienced this with the digestive piece before.   Tap Water The water that comes out of our taps originates from lakes, rivers, and or groundwater. (41:37) Then it goes under extensive filtration and then disinfection. Disinfection uses one of two chemicals - chlorine or chloramine. It is important for safety to go through this disinfection process. When you think about the community of microbes that live in our gut and think about a disinfectant being added to our water, you think about the impact this has on your gut bacteria. Studies have shown that they absolutely do. The chlorine/chloramine that is added to drinking water not only decreases the growth of really important probiotic species, but it actually allows the growth of multi-resistant pathogens. There have been a variety of studies showing that feeding animals chlorinated tap water actually increases the number of bacteria that are growing in their digestive tract. These bacteria strains are associated with hospital inquired infections. Studies have shown that there is a potential link between chlorinated drinking water and the incidence of colorectal cancer. To understand whether this effect is mediated via the microbiome, a study compared the effect of drinking chlorinated water versus tap water in transgenic mice susceptible to colon cancer. Chlorinated water causes a substantial increase in tumor development in the colon, associated with reduced levels of Clostridium perfringens, a species believed to have anti-tumor effects. Interestingly, mice drinking tap water tended instead to develop tumors in the small intestine. Removing the chlorine/chloramine after the water comes out of our tap before we drink it, is a really good idea for our gut microbiome.   More on Fluoride There are also a lot of municipalities in North America that add fluoride to tap water, with the rationale of reducing tooth decay. In episode 34 Stacy and Sarah discussed fluoride, and the science has not changed. The science showing that fluoride is beneficial for dental health when it makes prolonged contact with tooth surfaces is really strong. However, the science showing any benefit to oral health from drinking fluoridated water is basically nonexistent. There have been some really large studies showing that fluoridation does not increase the risk of anything of the things that have been rumored to be true. However, there have been a few studies showing a correlation between fluoride levels and lower IQ in children. This has opened up the question if fluoride can open up the blood-brain barrier, and potentially negatively impact early brain development. But this is still a big open question where more science is needed. We do know that fluoride seems to accumulate in the pineal gland as we age.  The pineal gland is located in our brain and secretes melatonin to help us sleep. We don't know if this is what is behind sleep disturbances, but its something to point to that shows how fluoride crosses the blood-brain barrier. Overall, more research is needed to clarify if there are actual risks with fluoridation. We do know that the benefits are not measurable. In a study of broiler chickens, high levels of dietary fluorine resulted in lower microbial diversity, significantly lower levels of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. The study also showed significantly higher levels of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus compared to the control group. In a mouse study, 12 weeks of exposure to fluoride altered the oral microbial community by selectively depleting probiotic Parabacteroides distasonis, Bacteroides uniformis, and an unclassified Bacteroides species. However, if we are using fluoridated toothpaste, drinking non-fluoridated water appears to pose no risk to oral health. There is a strong case for filtering water for removing chlorine, chloramine, and fluoride. Stacy isn't yet adding minerals to her water but is going to give it a try and is excited. You can get those minerals on the AquaTru.   Pesticide Residues in Tap Water While an inexpensive activated carbon (charcoal) water filter can remove chlorine, chloramine, and fluoride from tap water. Unfortunately, these common water filtration systems can’t remove pesticide residues. Heavy metals are a well-known problem. (53:57) If you have lead in your tap water there is so much information out there that you would understand the importance of not showering in this level of contaminated water. We talked about how glyphosate impacts the gut microbiome in last week’s episode (405). Glyphosate exposure increases the ratio of pathogenic bacteria to probiotic microbes, reducing Bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus, and Enterococcus while increasing Salmonella and Clostridium. There is no dose-response. Any glyphosate exposure is problematic. In the US, glyphosate has been used for over 40 years and is used mostly to kill weeds that interfere with agricultural crops (typically corn, soy, and canola). We know that runoff from industrial agriculture is a major source of contaminants in streams, rivers, and lakes, which is where we get our tap water from. Third-party testing was done on 85 tap water samples by Moms Across America and Sustainable Pulse. The results showed that 35 of the samples had glyphosate levels up to 0.3 ppb. On average, 87% of Americans have measurable glyphosate residues inside their bodies. For more on how glyphosate impacts our health, see this study. We know we are getting exposed to glyphosate and it looks as though tap water may be a key root of exposure. This is the most compelling reason for filtering water using reverse osmosis.   Closing Thoughts Sarah is so grateful for AquaTru for giving our listeners such a steep discount on their filtration systems. However, depending on where you live, if you live in an area where your water is likely to be contaminated, that shifts that priority. It is fascinating to Stacy that this is beyond heavy metal contamination, it is beyond glyphosate, that three out of four homes have contaminants beyond the prescribed measures in America. This was a fact that once she heard it, Stacy couldn't un-hear it. Is this a burden that you should be stressed out about - absolutely not. This is to educate you so that you can plan for if you want to make changes. A great place to start is to look at what is in your water. Use this site as a reference point. I have always been an "in my own head" kind of gal.  I think...a lot! Sometimes I wonder if I would have developed this skill the same way if I did not participate in such a relatively isolated sport.  Sometimes when I think about the amount of hours in my most formative years spent swimming back and forth seeing the same black line, hearing the same white noise, and processing my thoughts.....it is a little baffling! Let's just do some simple math on the conservative side of things and say I swam for 1 hour a day, 5 days a week, for 10 years. That is 2400 HOURS in developmental years where I was primarily in my head thinking while exercising.  Most high school aged club swimmers practice 2 hours, 5-6 days a week....so just in high school alone for 4 years they might average 1920-2300 hours of pool time.... While I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy, I am no psychologist.  I do have to assume, however, that my keen ability to process out my thoughts during exercise was crafted greatly by my swimming background.   What do you think?  Does this resonate with you? Christchurch Council say it's not their fault the city's drinking water will remain chlorinated, for now.The Ministry of Health has obliged the Council to keep adding chlorine to two-thirds of the city's water supply.The Christchurch City Council will keep adding chlorine to two-thirds of the city's water supply - as it works to meet the Government's new water safety requirements.Three Waters and Waste head Helen Beaumont says told Chris Lynch the Ministry has praised its repairs of the city's well-heads.But she says it wants mains and reservoirs deep-cleaned before stopping chlorination.Beaumont says she's confident Council can make a good case for an exemption - as they're some of the most well-versed in the country on water issues.LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW ABOVE

Elizabeth Edwards knows that nothing is simple or easy when it comes to cleaning up toxic waste, but Edwards, a professor of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto, is looking for ways to harness microbes to do our dirty work for us.  Dr. Edward’s research focuses on the biodegradation of chlorinated solvents in the environment – the means by which microbes can actually make a living by eating our noxious waste. Chlorinated solvents like trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), and others, have a sordid history in the environment.  They have long been used as degreasers and dry cleaning fluid, but before there were regulations about how to handle waste, manufacturers and dry cleaners dumped old, dirty solvents in evaporation ponds or out the back door of the facility.  Some of the fluid dumped this way evaporated, but since chlorinated solvents are both dense and recalcitrant, much of the liquid seeped straight down to the groundwater.  And stayed there.  Among other projects, Dr. Edwards is looking at the ability of mixed cultures of bacteria to break down these solvents in a step-wise process, with the expectation that we’ll eventually be able to treat the contamination at some sites with injections of microbes. In this interview, Dr. Merry Buckley talks with Dr. Edwards about why chlorinated solvents are such a difficult environmental problem, how working in environmental consulting for a time helped her realize where she wanted to focus her research, and why we might have to make some tough decisions when it comes to cleaning up the hundreds (thousands?) of solvent-contaminated sites in North America.
