Tori Dunlap, founder of *Her First $100K* and the bestselling author of *Financial Feminist*, who shares her expertise on organic growth, audience engagement, and brand building. Tori delves into her philosophy of "serve before you sell," explaining why businesses should focus on providing value before asking anything of their audience. She emphasizes that creating trust through valuable content—not simply promoting products—is the foundation of a loyal community. Tori also highlights the importance of narrowing down a brand's message and voice to resonate deeply with a target audience, as trying to appeal to everyone often results in a diluted brand identity. As the conversation progresses, Tori explains her strategic use of automated messaging for identifying and engaging her most loyal followers, which allows her to tailor content and even upsell products based on their engagement level. She discusses the value of moving followers from social media to platforms she owns, like email lists or her podcast, so she's not reliant on the algorithms for business stability. Tori concludes by stressing the significance of being authentic and even polarizing in her messaging, which helps attract a committed audience aligned with her values and vision. For those looking to grow a community or launch a brand, Tori's approach provides practical insights into cultivating an engaged audience that's built on trust and shared values.CHAPTER TITLES3:00 - Serve Before You Sell5:20 - Using Automated Messaging for Audience Engagement7:45 - Evolution of Messaging Rules and Strategy10:12 - Building Customer Support Through Custom Conversations12:30 - Targeting Ads to Highly Engaged Followers15:03 - Importance of Audience Engagement Over Conversion16:22 - Strategies for Organic Growth on Social Media17:02 - Top Lessons for Growing Your First Followers18:04 - Creating Value First: Why Trust is Key18:48 - Developing a Strong, Clear Brand Identity20:06 - Using Social Media as Top-of-Funnel Engagement21:12 - Moving Followers to Platforms You Own21:57 - Finding the Right Niche and Audience Sweet Spot22:10 - Building Stronger Connections by Being PolarizingConnect with Tori Dunlap:Herfirst100k.comIG - Herfirst100kConnect with Rudy Mawer:LinkedInInstagramFacebookTwitter

This week, Erica and Cassie sit down with Tori Dunlap, an internationally-recognized money and career expert, and podcast host. After saving $100,000 at age 25, Tori quit her corporate job in marketing and founded Her First $100K to fight financial inequality by giving women actionable resources to better their money. She has helped over four million women negotiate salary, pay off debt, build savings, and invest. In this episode, Tori shares some of the key steps that will set you up for financial success, no matter where you are currently in your financial journey. Here's a peek at what we cover in this episode: [00:03:42] - Tori shares her background in marketing with the initial ambition of climbing the corporate ladder, and explains how her "rose colored goggles" came off quickly in her first (toxic) job. She then dives into the Her First $100K story - how setting her goal of saving $100K by 25, hitting that goal, and being invited on the Today Show as a result led her to quit her job three weeks later to run her business full time; and how, since then, she's amassed 4M global followers, created the #1 business podcast in the world for women (Financial Feminist), written a New York Times bestseller (Financial Feminist), and helped countless women feel financially confident. [00:08:22] - Tori shares 3 basic steps young professionals can take now to set themselves up for financial success throughout their career (and well into retirement) - negotiating and advocating for your worth, strategically saving for the things you want and need, and contributing to retirement accounts like a 401K or IRA as early as possible. [00:14:43] - Tori chats through budgeting and spending, and how her 3 budget buckets (Bucket #1: necessary expenses like rent, mortgage payments, minimum payments on debt, insurance, groceries; Bucket #2: goal oriented expenses like your 401K contributions and larger payments toward debt; Bucket #3: fun money set aside for doing the things you love) make budgeting approachable and enjoyable as a tool for creating a life you love. [00:21:36] - Tori dives into HYSAs (High Yield Savings Accounts) and how you can take advantage of them to earn more in interest. She also shares how we can be future thinking with our money to achieve the BIG goals we may have in our lives, like opening a coffee shop (Erica's dream) or taking lavish vacations. There's no compression or crushing of black colors or over- saturation like when I upload to Youtube. My clients get the full 4K resolution HD as it was intended.I use it to host / broadcast live events…I also use Vimeo for my portfolio, case studies —and it never has annoying pre roll ads. I can create a customized player and keep people on my landing page so they don't get distracted and go down the rabbit hole watching someone else's stuff. What you may not know is that Vimeo can be used if you're in HR to put all your on-boarding videos in one place.. you could do the same if you teach a course…put your vids behind a paywall and charge for it.Need a videographer, Creative director or editor? Do you recall your earliest memories about managing money? Did you squirrel away pennies in a bank or watch your parents balance the checkbook? Author Tori Dunlap had those memories as a child and was always good with money, but she learned her experience was unusual — especially among her female friends. After investigating financial literacy and wealth gaps, Dunlap discovered that girls are significantly less likely to receive a holistic financial education and receive radically different messages about money than boys. Women, she contends, are often taught to restrain their spending, while men are taught to invest and are rewarded for pursuing wealth. And when something like, say, a global pandemic happens, women tend to be the first to leave the workforce or experience job cuts, and are the last to re-enter it. With such disparate outcomes, it's no wonder money is a source of anxiety and a barrier to equality for so many. In her new book, Financial Feminist: Overcome the Patriarchy's Bullsh*t to Master Your Money and Build a Life You Love, Dunlap aims to help women exercise agency over their finances and lives. Through journaling prompts, deep-dives into the financial landscape, and interviews with financial experts on everything money — from predatory credit card companies to the racial wealth gap and voting with your dollars — Financial Feminist strives to help women be free to live the lives they want. Dunlap joins us at Town Hall to share her approach to paying off debt, spending mindfully, saving money without deprivation, and investing for the future. Let me tell you an investing story that makes the hairs on my arms stand up. I had been great at investing in a 401K from age 24 to 34. It was my ex-husband's 401K, but he was the one with the great company match (aka free money). That account grew to $150,000. But then we got divorced and that account vaporized. Get this though, if we had kept that account, and contributed just $15,000 each year over the last 10 years, earning 10% on average that account would be worth close to $800,000 now. Heartbreaking, but the moral of the story is that investing works, but it isn't always sexy. That sentiment is echoed by our guest, Tori Dunlap, author of Financial Feminist, host of the Financial Feminist podcast, and creator of Her First 100K. Tori believes that If you're scared of the stock market and the fluctuations, the answer is to be patient and view investing as a long-term practice and you will be rewarded. As Tori says, for every 20-year time period that you are invested in the stock market your chances of seeing a return on your investment is 100%. Those are pretty good odds. In this episode, we talk about how to manage fear when it comes to investing, ways to develop an investing mindset, and how to get started investing and building wealth on any budget. We're going jargon free on this episode, so join Tori and me as we guide you away from fear toward your goal of investing this year. Let's start talkin'. Hello, She Did It Her Way listeners. Please give a huge welcome to the lovely Tori Dunlap! Tori is an internationally recognized money and career expert, and founder of Her First $100K. She got her start when she saved $100,000 by the age of 25 (incredible, right?), quit her job in marketing, and launched her company to fight financial inequality by giving women actual resources to better their financial situation. Tori has helped over 1 million women negotiate salaries, pay off debt, build savings and invest. She has been featured on Good Morning America, New York Times, BBC, Time, People, CNN, New York Magazine, Forbes, CNN, NBC, BuzzFeed, and more. Tori got her first taste of being an entrepreneur when she was only 9 and had her own candy vending machine company. By the time she graduated high school she owned 15 of these machines and eventually sold her company to another young (10 years old) entrepreneur, ironically also named Tori.Growing up, Tori knew owning a business at such a young age was rare but from a young age, her parents financially educated her telling her to never rely on credit cards and instilled lessons in her on learning how to budget, invest, and negotiate. By the time Tori graduated college in May of 2016, all of her female friends were coming to her for financial advice and guidance. As she moved into adulthood she realized she was entering into a very different environment than expected and knew that having a financial foundation was imperative for every woman in America and truly the best form of protest against inequitable unjust systems and companies. She wanted to teach other women to be able to use money as a tool to make choices about their life.Tori launched Her First $100K as a blog in December 2016, while working her 9-5 job in social media marketing. After building up momentum launching her business Tori was featured on Good Morning America and soon after quit her job to work her own business full-time. In her first full year in business as an entrepreneur (2020) she had roughly 30,000 followers, and has now grown her audience to over 2 million followers. She also is the founder and host of the number one business podcast called Financial Feminist with over 1.4 million downloads in only 3 months. Tori‘s goal (one of many) is to help women achieve financial equality and to make change through a larger lens.If you would have told her five years ago, a college graduate who went to school for organizations, communication, and theater, that she would be a financial educator full-time, she would have laughed in your face. Her plan was to take the corporate world by storm reaching the position of VP of Marketing by 30. But you know what they say about the best-laid plans… Two weeks in, Tori found herself working for someone she just couldn't respect and had already determined that the corporate world was just not for her. She had no desire to help make someone else rich while being told that she could only take a certain number of days off per year. It was time to look outside the corporate box. She set her sights on being able to leave behind the corporate world by the time she turned 30. To do this she needed her side-hustle to make as much, or more than, her corporate salary brought in. At the age of 25, it had already happened, and after months of talking herself out of it, it was time to make her leap.Despite growing up with financially minded parents, they were resistant to her quitting her job because it was the ‘stable' choice. Leaving behind her corporate salary and benefits meant she was taking a risk and they weren't fully on board with that yet. Despite it all, she took the risk.Tori is a huge fan of not only taking risks but also setting and going for BIG goals. She also likes to remind people, notably women, that the subject of money is NOT taboo and that the narrative society has placed around talking about money is simply not accurate.“The patriarchy tells us don't talk about money. Talking about money is bad. Talking about money is impolite. [It] keeps them in power, they profit off of our silence, right? If they tell us don't talk about money, they're talking about money, they get to maintain social order, they get to maintain their power.”Wanting money and wanting power is not bad and these beliefs should not be perpetuated.“I want the ability to donate to causes I believe in, or take my best friend out for dinner, or have kids, or not have kids, or get married out of love, and not out of financial dependency.”Tori also reminds women that just because they are female, does not automatically make them ‘bad at math'. If she, as a theater major, can do it you can rock your finances, too. Tori Dunlap of Her First $100K, maintains that she was put on this earth to fight for women's financial rights, help them make what they're worth, build wealth, and get financially educated. Tori joins me for the second time on the show to share why she thinks women still don't have financial equality. She discusses her work as an educator about money, gives actionable tips, and explores systemic oppression and current financial norms that keep women from gaining agency over their cash. Tori also explores seeing money through the lens of feminism and why she believes that getting your financial situation together should be understood as a form of protest.

Tori Dunlap is a millennial money and career expert who founded her company Her First $100K, a financial education website which gives women resources to manage their money to fight the limitations of the patriarchy. Tori set a goal to save $100,000 by the time she was 25 and, when she achieved this goal early, quit her corporate marketing job to work full-time advocating for women's financial rights. Her goal is to eliminate the narrative of shame and judgment surrounding female spending and teach women that they can take control of their money and achieve the finance wins they deserve. Tori is a nationally recognized finance expert whose work has been featured on Good Morning America, the New York Times, Forbes, the New York Magazine and more. Today we talk about: - The emotional and psychological side of our personal spending - How financial systems in our society affect women; Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC); and LGBTQ+ members of our communities differently, and action-items to overcome these barriers (including actually learning what your 401K can do for you) - Bringing financial stability under the “self-care” umbrella -- and prioritizing it as part of your personal wellness, in the same way as you do exercising or eating healthy foods Questions asked: - Where do behavioral psychology and personal finance intersect? - How do finance barriers affect female-identifying, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and other demographics uniquely? - What are the most straightforward, important action-items you would give to young professionals in this stage? - Where is the balance between actively prioritizing your finances but still ensuring that your self-worth is not dependent on how much you have in the bank? - An aspect of entrepreneurship you couldn't have predicted?
