The 2025 NFL season is almost here, and Missing the Point is back with one of our most anticipated episodes of the year: our full-season NFL prediction special. Today we discuss childhood, fitness, and self-defense; the through-line is freedom. First up: Illinois has become the first state in the Union to mandate mental health screening for children in grades 3 – 12, so that conditions from trauma to anxiety can be detected early. How mandatory will these screenings be? How confidential? What is anxiety, and why are children better off learning to experience and solve their own anxiety, than to be coddled at every turn? We argue that anxiety—like pain, and sadness—are signals from your brain and body that should be listened to rather than erased. Also: childhood is a time of exploration, of mixing reality with fantasy, and should not be a time when adults' fantasies are imposed on children. Then: the New York Times cannot abide that anything that RFK Jr. does or says makes sense. Finally: do people have the right to defend themselves inside their own homes? Have we forgotten habeas corpus? Are the foundations of democracy coming apart at the seams? *****Our sponsors:Branch Basics: Get 15% off Branch Basics with the code DARKHORSE at https://branchbasics.com/darkhorse #branchbasicspodJolie: Beautiful showerheads that filter out the garbage without reducing water pressure. In this 2014 career deep-dive, Dark Horse Executive Editor Diana Schutz walks us through four decades in comics—with zero varnish. We trace her start behind the counter in Vancouver and at Comics & Comix in Berkeley, where she leveled up from retail to publishing, then the blink-and-you-miss-it Marvel stint and the formative Comico years shepherding creator-owned work. Finally, Diana lands at Dark Horse in 1990, rising to executive editor, championing auteurs, and launching the creator-driven Maverick imprint. Along the way we hit milestone collaborations—Frank Miller's Sin City and 300, Matt Wagner's Grendel, Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo, Harvey Pekar's American Splendor —and unpack her editor's playbook: protecting voice, negotiating deadlines without killing the art, and why “editor” means partner, not policeman. It's a masterclass in how careers are built, catalogs are curated, and why creator rights matter—told by someone who helped shape the modern indie era.

Growing Your Firm | Strategies for Accountants, CPA's, Bookkeepers , and Tax Professionals
Firm as a Service (FaaS) is a model that gives accountants the entire infrastructure of a firm technology, staffing, marketing, and support so they can focus on serving clients and scaling their practice. Unlike traditional partnerships or franchises, FaaS lets accountants retain ownership of their client base while benefiting from shared systems and resources. In a recent Growing Your Firm podcast, David Cristello, Founder of Jetpack Workflow, spoke with Chase Birky, CEO of Dark Horse, about how this approach is reshaping firm ownership.
Today we are all over the map. First: Elon, AI, and humanoid robots, with discussion of sex, the industrial revolution, specialization, the Pleistocene, feminism, men's work, porn, clankers, and vaping. Obviously. Then: are there differences between moral panics and social contagions, and is the current focus on pedophilia one or both? Finally: how widespread is fraud in science? It's not rare, and not merely the result of bad actors. Taking a game theoretic approach, authors of new research suggest that many scientists are defecting from honest scientific work for rational reasons.*****Our sponsors:Caraway: Non-toxic, beautiful, light ceramic cookware. Our discussion will take us through his Dark Horse series that released closely with Attack of the Clones, a lengthy discussion on the art by Ramon Bachs, and many of the finer points of "Manda-Lore!" This episode we're joined by the wonderful and only slightly mad genius behind all things Cameradactyl, Ethan Moses! We talk about how he's designed a complete system to allow us to shoot large format images on rolls of paper, including a full processing system to allow for easy development, even if you want to shoot colour reversal. He also explains why a 3D printer may be an increasingly valuable piece of kit for any photographer. You can find all of Ethan's fantastic work here: https://www.cameradactyl.com/

Last year, we sat down with Casey Brown right after the first iteration of Red Bull Rampage to feature a women's category to chat about what it meant to finally break that particular glass ceiling, what it took to do it, and how the event went.Casey is, once again, among a stacked roster of women who will be dropping in for this year's competition, but she's been up to a whole lot more than just preparing for Rampage — from bringing back Dark Horse, now on her own property; working with D3O to develop better women's protective gear; and putting together a bunch of other projects in between. So we brought her back on the podcast to talk about all of it, the state of women's freeride & the generation of riders following in her footsteps, and a whole lot more.RELATED LINKS:Blister Mountain Bike Buyer's GuideGet Our Free Newsletter & Gear GiveawaysBLISTER+ Get Yourself CoveredCasey Brown on the Inaugural Women's Red Bull Rampage (Ep.246)TOPICS & TIMES:The return of Dark Horse (2:51)The new venue(7:12)What's next for Dark Horse? Today we discuss the reasons not to stay in your lane, wildlife in the Pacific Northwest, and whether Americans want a handout, or to be left alone. First: Bret responds to critique from Geert Vanden Bossche on his characterization of intramuscular vaccines and their capacity to produce mucosal immunity. Then: how science discovers reality, the risks of reductionism, and a hypothesis that generalists are more immune to corruption than specialists. Then: bald eagles and foxes compete to scavenge seal meat on the shores of the Salish Sea. Meanwhile in Canada, people are told they can't go into the woods. Finally: young, and urban, Americans are more likely than older, or rural Americans, to want a handout from the federal government.*****Our sponsors:Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club: Scrumptious & freshly harvested. Today we discuss the cancellation of mRNA vaccine contracts by Secretary Kennedy. What are the risks, are they as limited as he suggests, and what can we look forward to from this technology in the future? Conversation includes Covid and the Covid shots, repurposed drugs, and the nature of science and knowledge. What does it mean for a claim to be credible—socially, or analytically? What does MAHA stand for, are their limits to hypernovelty, and how can we return to a more ancestral environment?*****Our sponsors:Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club: Scrumptious & freshly harvested. Today we discuss “gender affirming surgeries”, AI and the future of cognition, and wild foxes. Kaiser Permanente is pausing surgery on trans-presenting children—we discuss sex and gender, meaning and identity, delusion and madness. Then: unlike the physical multiverse, mental multiverses are common, and becoming more so, as AI makes it ever more difficult to know what is true. We discuss grief, and how our worlds must fork when we think, but do not know, that someone has died. Similarly, when events are unclear—who was responsible for the death of President Kennedy in 1963? Are aliens visiting Earth—we must keep multiple mental universes alive in our heads at once. Correctives to this include meeting people in person, and embracing belief systems that have timeless value. Finally: more wild foxes, this time trying to eat a raccoon carcass. Included: discussion of the evolution of territoriality, parental care, and animal behavior more generally.*****Our sponsors:Masa Chips: Delicious chips made with corn, salt, and beef tallow—nothing else—in loads of great flavors. She kissed a girl, she liked it, and for a decade, Katy Perry could do no wrong. But when cultural appropriation scandals and lukewarm albums replaced her candy-coated hits, not even Jeff Bezos's rocket ship could launch her back to stardom. From pixie cut crisis to space tourism cringe, this is how pop's reigning queen became TikTok's favorite punchline.Happy Wife, Happy Life co-hosts Jordan Myrick and Kendahl Landreth join Misha to figure out how this "Dark Horse" found herself "Waking Up In Vegas."Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! We're back with the next installment of our look at Comic Book Movies that people might not know are comic book movies! This week, the Pamela Anderson 1996 action vehicle Barb Wire. Based on the comic of the same name published under Dark Horse and Comics Greatest World it sees Barbara "The Wire" Kopetski facing a distopian nightmare future in the far flung future of 2017. And for a movie that isn't great it sure has it all. Fights! Motor bikes! Explosions! An extended stripping scene whilst Pamela Anderson gets hosed down for a really long time! What a time to be alive. Today we discuss organ donation, and parenting in the animal world. Organ donation: how can we modify incentives so that people who need organs have a good chance of getting them, but people with healthy organs are never sent to an early death because their organs are valuable? Then: a natural history primer on parental care and feeding ecology of some local mammals and birds. What can be learned from observing the successful parenting of both barn swallows and red foxes?*****Our sponsors:Jolie: Beautiful showerheads that filter out the garbage without reducing water pressure. Today we discuss Epstein, Trump, MAGA, and how we know what we think we know. The actual economy exists, as does the attention economy; now Bret introduces a new term: the leverage economy. This implies that there is a commodity that we cannot see, which can be used to coerce players to act in certain ways. We see evidence of this in academia, in the news, and in politics. Discussion includes data mining, conspiracy, and whether Trump will pick up neocons as he loses some of his base.*****Our sponsors:Everyday Dose: Coffee plus collagen, mushrooms & nootropics – delicious!
