Welcome to our annual award show, The Stampies: Best Comics of 2025. Part One. Every year is a good year for comics. You just have to go out and read them. That's the secret. We try not to imprison ourselves with characters, genres, publishers, or even our preferred tastes. As long as you're only interested in good comics, you'll find them if you read enough, and the brilliant thing about 2025 is that we read a lot, and found so many great comics, but we still didn't read enough to read all the great comics. Thankfully, we sent out the Comic Book Couples Counseling distress call, and a bunch of our friends from across the industry answered. In Fela: Music Is the Weapon (Amistad, 2025), artist Jibola Fagbamiye and writer Conor McCreery team up to tell the remarkable origin story of one of Nigeria's most famous sons, the King of Afrobeat, Fela Kuti, who rose to superstardom with his band Africa 70 in the 1970s, during a charged political period for his nation. A once-in-a-lifetime musical talent who innovated the musical genre Afrobeat, Fela was also an outspoken critic of the Nigerian military regime. Fela focuses on a pivotal moment in his life, when he and his mother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the renowned Nigerian suffrage activist, were ruthlessly attacked in their own home by soldiers who suffered no repercussions for their violence. It also explores Fela's complex relationship with women, including his mother and Sandra Izsadore, the American singer and activist who revitalize and inspired him. Over the course of his life, Fela married 27 women, fathered numerous children, and founded the Kalakuta Republic commune, where he and his band lived, declaring themselves independent from military rule. News 6:43: The two hosts then get into Netflix entering an agreement to purchase Warner Bros, HBO & HBO Max. The good news is the planned deal would take until Q3 2026 to actually close. That’s only good because both hosts (Justin especially) are not even sure how big the ramifications of this deal will be, who or what it’ll affect (aside from the consumer, who no matter what will lose), and what this will mean for the Entertainment industry at large. …Of course, not even a day after the two talked about this, a hostile bid from Paramount was announced, which means the hosts will try and talk about that next episode! 15:08: Justin and Helen attempt to figure out what Amazon was actually thinking when they chose to AI dub a couple of anime, to much derision, and then pull it off their service. It does get the hosts to think a bit darker, and why despite this being over, it’s not actually over when it comes to AI dubbing. 27:34: Yuki Ikeda’s Thunder 3 is slated to resume serialization February 6, which suggests Ikeda is healthy enough to resume the manga; Terraformars is also slated to resume next week, after it did see an initial delay during the summer and fall. 28:53: Shinsuke Takahashi’s family shared details of what has happened to the artist a few weeks ago, and the details are not very good. On today's episode, I talk to comics writer Brian Michael Bendis. Originally from Cleveland, OH, Brian knew from an early age he wanted to make comics. His late teens and twenties were spent making his own comics, some of them published by Caliber Press, and in 1996, a lot of this work was collected together at Image. This led to working on the Spawn spin-off Sam and Twitch, and in 1998, he began releasing Powers, which would go on to garner both critical and commercial success, as well as Harvey and Eisner Awards. In 2000, Brian co-created Miles Morales when he began writing Ultimate Spider-Man. The next year, Brian began a defining run on Daredevil and co-created Jessica Jones with the start of Alias. And this is essentially just the first decade of his career! Since then, he went on to write defining runs on comics like Avengers and New Avengers, events like House of M, books like Superman and Action Comics for DC, and most recently, for the 25th anniversary of Powers, Brian and artist Michael Avon Oeming are creating a new 12-issue series at Dark Horse, and it's great! We wrote back to Bret and encouraged him to bring the hard, explosive evidence of the World Trade Center to his audience to back up his and the senators' claims about controlled demolition. He was game. We scheduled it right away.We were very honored to be asked onto the Dark Horse podcast. Bret has 521K YouTube subscribers and 1.1M followers on X. He's a frequent guest on the Joe Rogan and Tucker Carlson platforms, and he's shown a keen awareness of the truth about 9/11 and isn't afraid to talk about it.Right out of the gate, Bret acknowledged that he had been following our work for quite a while and that “when somebody is accused of being a conspiracy theorist, my only question is, ‘are they any good at it?' ” :)Then he made me blush: “and I have to say, you set the standard….extremely diligent.…really appreciate the rigor that you bring to that puzzle.”Well, I needed to shift gears and jump right into WTC 7 with both feet, so we introduced the sudden, straight-down, symmetrical, free fall of the building — after witnesses heard and saw explosions. Then we launched into the extreme heat — 3 to 4,000 degrees F — which, of course, was also unaccounted for in the official narrative.Bret was a very active listener and an engaged student of each scientific piece of evidence we presented, and he shared his wisdom with us liberally. For instance, when hearing of the mysterious billions of “previously molten iron microspheres” of “unknown origin” distributed ubiquitously through out the WTC dust, and that the equally puzzling “red-gray chips” of nano-thermite actually produce those same iron microspheres when ignited, he drew the following inference: “Let me just say logically speaking, what you've got is a material, these tiny spheres of formerly molten iron, a mechanism which demonstrably generates them.And that puts the burden of proof on somebody who says that what brought these towers down was fire. And in the case of the Twin Towers, some structural damage. It puts the onus on them to generate a competing explanation for those anomalous, readily observed phenomena. They don't. The burden of proof logically falls on them.And the question then is not, for those of us who are suspicious here, The question is, well come up with anything that is as plausible. Let's see you demonstrate it.When we arrived at the explosive evidence of the Twin Towers, he saw each piece building upon the last and arriving at the proof of the fraud of NIST in the fabrication of their theory that the top section of the building above the point of plane impacts drove the rest of the building down to the ground and then destroyed itself. The building was quite obviously blown up.It was quite disappointing to read some of the comments that chastised Weinstein for delving into these particular conspiracy theories. People really react emotionally and, obviously, without even watching the interview, make quite self-revealing comments on the YouTube video platform, despite supporting his other “conspiracy theories.” They, some of them, just couldn't stomach this one. If only they'd take the time to watch. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.Support the show

Drylands play a critical role in global ecosystems as well as the carbon cycle. We talk with ecologist Brooke Osborne about the fascinating world of biogeochemistry and dryland science. Covering 40% of the Earth's surface and hosting a third of the human population, heterogeneous drylands have low resource availability and therefore are highly sensitive to climatic changes. We discuss Brooke's ongoing research into soil carbon storage and sequestration, particularly in the context of grazing practices and land management.
