Any business, especially construction, requires us to know what's going on at all times. But, how can we be in the high level of things and not the bits and bites, in order to be able to actually also have the time to build the business and take it forward? Because, see, whether we want it or not - we find ourselves dealing with the bits and bites - if we don't have the right tool to operate our business. And by that I mean - if we are doing things manually instead of digitally. Now, I'm not talking about making sheets on excel or just texting instead of calling - I'm talking about whole new levels of doing things digitally - from knowing our employees clocked in at the right place and time, knowing our employees know the job they need to do, knowing what's going on in the filed by receiving live forms or checklists - these all can be and should be done digitally! Not to mention your younger employees who work and live digitally, and expect to get that in their workplace as well. And if this sounds like fiction, it's not - just switch to Connecteam - a platform built for managers - with a lot of different capabilities that helps you truly manage your business and gives you back time to focus on what you need, while giving your employees the work experience they expect to get in 2023 going on 2024.Connecteam has a free plan and a 14 day free trial, try them today by checking out the link in the show notes. He created from the inside out as opposed to the outside in. And I think you have to be, you have to burn that candle at both ends at the same time. Because if you're thinking about architecture without the end goal of the design, or you're thinking about design without encompassing the architecture – you're going to run into a mismatch in the center. And I see that constantly with almost every home.I don't teach them how to design, I teach them how to run a business. That's the thing that I like to impart on the younger generation is what it takes to actually serve your clients and serve an industry and serve a community. And I think that that's the thing that I think is the most important part to impart to to the new generation is actually how to serve.Nothing's easy. You know, in one of my lectures in how to succeed in design, I say it takes a lot of hard work to have an easy life. It's very easy to have a difficult life. And I think that's true with in any situation it's. It takes a lot of work to discipline yourself. It takes a lot of work to be kind when someone is shouting out the exact opposite of what you believe in. And yet to still be kind, it takes discipline. We're human.

Welcome to episode 50!! This week, welcoming Maurelehena Walles, founder & CEO of Equity Design Inc. Equity Design Inc. trains teachers to use physical activity to enhance learning and positively impact the health of thousands of Bronx students. Maurelhena always knew that she wanted to give back and work in the non-profit or social entrepreneurship sector, but first she gives us insight into her upbringing and what led her to today. She describes her parents' strategic move to Manhattan's Upper West Side as “window shopping from a young age”, where she had the “access” but not the funds. Maurelhena talks about how a child's zip code dictates what resources are available to them. Gathering all this data and more, it put Maurelhena's wheels in motion for seeking ways to make opportunities both accessible and affordable to children no matter where they live. A career representing the United States in track and field happened along the way, too!

Dyonne Fashina is the Principal at Denizens of Design Inc. She sees the beauty in designs and the passion it takes to create them. She sits down with host Dan Ryan to share her #hospitality journey from her memories about Canadian art culture to where she stands now.  Takeaways:    You have to learn to pick yourself back up when you get knocked down. In life, it's not about how you fall but how you get back up. Hospitality spaces have always been about empathy but it needs to shine through now more than ever.  There needs to be a certain identity to each design. If it doesn't have something unique to separate it from other designs, then no one will notice the difference. If you are designing something based on the latest trend, it will not last. But if you design something based on the environment and a good feeling, then it will last.  Life experiences will help you understand what kind of space that you need to create. Research also helps because every space is different. Always bring positive energy and the feeling of being invested into every project that you do.  A sense of community is incredibly important. It will help you get through difficult times and give you a strong support system.  Quote of the Show:   9:45 “Empathy needs to come into the design and the business world and into the hospitality world more than it had in the past.”   Links:   Twitter: https://twitter.com/denizensofdes?lang=en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dyonne-fashina-8567431a4/?originalSubdomain=ca Website: https://www.denizens.ca McMichael Art Collection: https://mcmichael.com/ Shout Outs:   0:30 Stacy Shoemaker 0:37 HD Awards 12:43 Clay Restaurant at the Garden Museum 12:56 KPMB Architects 25:49 The MicMichael Art Collection 31:13 HDAC 31:23 Aaron Anderson 32:55 Bashar Wali 32:56 Damon Lawrence 32:56 Nina Grondin 34:17 Lenny Kravitz 34:20 Venus Williams 36:00 Black Architects and Interior Designers Association of Canada 36:08 Camille Mitchell 36:09 Gensler Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGll0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 Podbean: https://www.defininghospitality.live/ Youtube : https://youtu.be/-RGsghJRfuc

Jamie McGuire dramaOn October 25, Voltage Pictures director Roger Kumble (dir. "After We Collided") announced that he was teaming up with actors Dylan Sprouse and Virginia Gardner to begin filming a movie adaption of bestselling "romance" novel "Beautiful Disaster"and SOCIAL MEDIA FREAKS OUTJamie McGuire has a lot of controversial opinions and has made a lot of enemies in the romance community for her books. Please review the provided links and materials for informationThere's no ending to this one yet, it's more of an ongoing realization by romancelandia that movie/television producers continue to not pick the books that romance lovers believe will make better television/filmOmegaverseDMCA Takedown NoticeScène à faireFor more information on what omegaverse actually is, go back to last month and listen to our werewolf episodes! Addison Cain starts writing omegaverse fanfic in 2012 while living in Japan. When she moves back to the States she pursues publishing and n 2016 Born to Be Bound was released by Blushing Books, and Cain becomes extremely popular and becomes one of the leading published omegaverse authorsIn 2018 fellow omegaverse author Zoey Ellis publishes Crave To Conquer through Quill Ink Books. It's also doing well and readers are liking it...until Cain's readers start gettng into it and recognizing a llot of similarities and tropes and plot lines when comparing Ellis' book to Cain'sCain goes forth and accuses Ellis of plagiarizing (similar to Serruya/Milan) and a long legal proceeding beginsAfter Cain accuses Ellis, Blushing Books issues DMCA's against Ellis, and all of Ellis' work is withdrawn; Ellis files counternotices, and after a few months her works are resorted; THEN Cain's lawyer's issue threatening letters promising legal action is Ellis doesn't take her work back down. Ellis does not do this, and sues Cain first. In late 2018 Quill Ink files against Blushing Books/Cain in the state of Oklahoma (even though BB/Cain have no relation to that state but is where Ellis' distributor is based); Cain asks for this to be dismissed since she has no business in that state, and after she swears to the judge that she had nothing to do with the hreatening letter sent by her lawyer to Ellis, Cain is dismissed from the OK caseSo Ellis sues Cain in VirginiaThe battle between Quill and BB continues, and Quill's lawyers, in the process of obtaining all the necessary documentation to create a fair case, obtain the correspondence between Cain and BB, which reveals Cain had been the one to pursue the takedown notices, DMCA, and copyright filings...in opposition to her sworn affidavit that she had nothing to do with the whole business (and what she's been posting on her personal social media). Furthermore, Cain has no copyrights filed on her works...In light of this, Ellis and Quill file a motion to judge Cain guilty for civil contempt, perjury and to dismiss this case. Three days later Blushing offers a complete settlement, says Ellis did NOT plagiarize and dismissed the case. Ellis was not awarded any money from her suit because she ran out of funds and her lawyer left before she could fully pursue the case.RWA vs. MilanThe Romance Writer's of America (RWA) is a trade organization for romance writers and was founded by Vivian Stephens and Rita Clay in 1980 who had hoped that RWA would be a professional organization that would help promote, advance and protect romance authorsIn 2018 Courtney Milan was appointed to Chair of the Ethics Board in 2018August 2019 RWA President-Elect Carolyn Jewell tweets about blocking a problematic author they had been in business with; smart people soon realize that this was Sue Grimshaw, former editor and romance buyer for Borders bookstore. Grimshaw's boss and friend Suzan Tisdale, owner of Glenfinnan Publishing, comes out and says that this is nonsense, and Grimshaw " is no more a racist or bigot than I am."Twitter isn't happy (is it ever?), and Milan joins in on the drama session, and rips apart the 1999 book Somewhere Lies the Moon by Kathryn Lynn Davis and its portrayal of half-Chinese women (Milan is half-Chinese herself); there's fallout from this whole situation with Davis claims that she lost her contract, and Tisdale claims that she's having a hard time finding anyone who will work with her now. Tisdale files a complaint against Milan, accusing Milan of harassing behavior, bullying, threatening her career and her business, and threatens legal action if the RWA does not do something about Milan and Milan's social mediaMilan is asked to step down as Chair and she does, although she's upset due to the unclear policies in RWA's bylaws concerning social media practicesThe complaints against Milan are brought to an entirely new Committee Panel, things get weird, people keep recusing themselves, and when the panel finally meets to come to a decision on November 19, 2019, they decide to censure Milan, suspend her membership for one year and put a lifetime ban on ever holding leadership positions again. The Panel's decision is sent to the RWA Board on December 17 but it's lacking a LOT of evidence...including Milan's own statements! Despite the Board asking the Panel for more information and documentation, the Panel (and the Panel's lead, new President Elect Damon Suede) refuse to present more information, saying that the Board just needs to trust the Panel...Then Social Media gets ahold of everything...and THINGS BLOW UPOn Christmas Eve there's an emergency Board meeting and they vote to immediately rescind the ruling against MilanThat's the end of the Milan dispute...but RWA continues to be in hot water. People are withdrawing memberships, authors are pulling books from nominations, agents are refusing to work with RWA, Suede is catching heat for falsifying claims and accreditations, publishers pull out of conventions, and over 3000 members leave. Suede ends up withdrawing from his position, Davis and Tisdale say they only wanted an apology, and RWA unveils a new award in honor of Vivian Stephens in place of the RITA award annnnnd that's...sort of where we're left off at.Books/authors we mention:Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuireBorn to Be Bound by Addison CaineCrave to Conquer by Zoey EllisKennedy RyanJamie McGuireLinks:Maguire/Krumble/Beautiful Disaster"Roger Kumble Movie ‘Beautiful Disaster' Sets Dylan Sprouse, Virginia Gardner & More" (D'Allessandro, 2021)"Racist Jamie McGuire Dragged Again Upon News of Romance Book Adaptation" (Shotwell, 2021)"Jamie McGuire's 'Problematic' Past Turns Fangs Against Beautiful Disaster" (Krishnamurphy, 2021)"What's the Deal with...Jamie McGuire" (Bec&Books, 2020)"Beautiful Disaster Criticised by Fans for Jamie McGuire's Controversial Past" (Sonia, 2021)"Author Jamie McGuire dropped by agency after engaging with Proud Boys and Nazis" (HorrorMaven, 2020)Omegaverse"Copyright: The alpha and the Omega(verse)" (Whipple, 2019a)"Not Walking Away From Omegaverse" (Whipple, 2019b)"The DMCA Is Not a Weapon for Great Justice" (Whipple, 2021)Case 5:18-cv-00920-G Document 6-14 Filed 10/17/18 - Blushing Books emails courtesy Whipple"Into The Omegaverse: How a Fanfic Trope Landed in Federal Court" (Youtube, Ellis, 2020a)"Eyes Wide Open" (Bailey, 2020)"Addison Cain's lawyer e-mailed me, and it only got worse from there" (Youtube, Ellis, 2020b)Courtney Milan Twitter thread re:CainRWA Ethics complaint against Milan by Cain re:Milan's "lack of support""A Feud in Wolf-Kink Erotica Raises a Deep Legal Question" (Alter, 2020)"Drama in the Omegaverse" (Golden Angel, 2019)Ellis' lawyers counternotices against Cain"Join The Fan Fiction Deep State And Watch This Latest Video That Addison Cain Really Doesn't Want You To See" (TechDirt, 2020) Quill Ink Books Limited v. ABCD Graphics and Design Inc (5:18-cv-00920)"Omegaverse Lawsuit" (Ellis, 2018)Meredith, Empress of the Sock Puppet Army's review of Crave to Conquer | Goodreads"Discussion of Addison Cain's Alpha Claim and Zoey Ellis's Myth of Omega" (Busse, 2018)"Just Keep Breathing With Me" - POSSIBLE FIRST OMEGAVERSE by Tebtosca (2011)All Lawyers are Bastards Podcast: There Will Be KnotsRWA/Milan"The Implosion of the RWA" (Ryan, 2019)"Romance is publishing's most lucrative genre. Marc Hemeon Show Notes Marc is an artist and designer living and painting on the North Shore of Oahu. Previously, Marc was the founder of Design Inc. Marc has co-founded a number of companies including North Technologies which, merged with Hodinkee.com in 2015. Marc was the co-founder of Fflick, which YouTube acquired in 2011. Following the acquisition, Marc was part of the team to redesign YouTube in 2011 and again in 2012, leading the site wide redesign. Previously, Marc led design teams at Oakley and Digg, and co-founded a number of companies, including TeeFury and Design by Humans. Most passionate about I’ve always been somebody who liked to make things, like applications, software, or art, and now I’m kind of “recovering entrepreneur”. Last year, I closed a startup that I had founded in California; I sold my house and took a break from tech. After 20 years in the Tech world I took a break, and a year ago we moved to the North Shore of Oahu, where my wife is from. Currently, I’m trying different hands on and I’m trying to do art and create things that would inspire people. And surprisingly, I found that it is more challenging than I thought. But it’s a break for my mind. Today I’m passionate about figuring out how to make a living from selling art. I’m trying to figure it out. And it’s not easy to start all over again. Marc’s Career I had what people call a success, I had a startup in 2010, I got acquired by Google and YouTube, I spent four years working for Google and YouTube and I loved it. I was able to pay back tons of debt from many years of being an entrepreneur, and my family was able to buy a home. I thought wrongly that I was a good entrepreneur. That I know how to succeed now. But we had a good team and we were just lucky. The fact we got acquired doesn’t make us better than any entrepreneur that straggling to build their company and look for a product–market fit. I left Google in 2014, and I started another company called North with a friend of mine, we raised five million dollars to build apps, to be an incubator. We said that we will build an app every four months and when one of them will take off, we will put most of the money raised on it to maximize the success. We hit kind of gold in the second app. We made an app called WatchVille about luxury watches, it was a fantastic journey that led to a merger with the leader in the luxury watches market. And it’s a very successful business. That happen really fast. So I felt I probably do know how to succeed with startups and decided to go and build my own startup. I raised 2.3 million dollars and I created a design company called Design Inc. and we made a platform to find designers. And it did pretty well, and we had revenues but not enough. So I closed the company, and I gave half of the money back to the investors. Marc’s Customers At Fflick, the company that was acquired by Google and YouTube, we were trying to sell our software to the big studios, NGM and DreamWorks, but we launched our service and became very popular very fast so we got acquired within a month of the launch. It was a different time. At the last company, Design Inc. we had 900 customers from very large companies to medium and small. Google used us, and Facebook used us. Many leading companies used us. Marc’s best advice about approaching the customers The point of making a startup and building a new thing is not about building a successful business fast and selling it for a lot of money or making an IPO. There are different meanings to success and each individual should decide what success means to them. Thousands of brilliant smart entrepreneurs don’t hit a financial success. So you have to really understand WHY, what do you want to get out of it? You want to make money? You want to be famous? You want people to tell you that you are important? You want to find a meaning. The pure entrepreneurs are the ones that...

The Power of No & the Value of Your Time This past April at Creative South, I got to listen to a panel discussion by Marc Hemeon and Joel Beukelman of Design Inc. which links companies and freelancers together. Scratch that, according to Marc, design panels suck so they turned it into a quirky session about 70ish Life and Business Lessons for Designers. What made it even more enjoyable was the Always Sunny in Philadelphia theme music in the background along with the energy and humor they injected into the presentation. One of the biggest takeaways that punched me in the gut was when they said: “If it’s not a Hell Yes, then it’s a Hell No.” This spoke volumes to how I used to take on work simply out of financial scarcity or due to feeling obligated. I want this episode to drive home the fact that saying no creates more time for the work that excites you. Listening to this episode better be a hell yes to you. The Power of No Why is it so hard to say no to people? For me, it always landed into two buckets: There was an element of people pleasing or obligation Money was tight and projects felt scarce Letting these guide my decisions of saying yes got me into some shitty commitments that held my time and excitement hostage. Only in the last two years have I discovered the power of saying no. To be honest, saying no has allowed me to stumble across exciting new work that let me evolve as an artist. For example, in September of 2016, I randomly got the chance to do my first mural. The only reason I was free to take on this new challenge was because I turned down a not so exciting job the week before. Murals have easily blossomed into the work that excites me the most. Who knows when or if I would’ve stumbled across this new medium had I committed to the other project. There just wouldn't have been time to take it on. That brings me to one of my main points: your most valuable asset isn’t money, it’s your time. We all have the same 24 hours in a day and each hour is sacred. When you say yes to mediocre things you don’t really want to do, you’re saying no to the things you really want to say yes to. By filling up those open gaps in your life with low budget t-shirt designs for unaccountable clients who take forever to pay, your killing those spontaneous opportunities that could be an instant “Hell Yes.” That’s where saying no comes in. When something isn’t a Hell Yes, it should be a Hell No. Operating Out of Scarcity If you’re taking on work solely based on scarcity or guilt, I really think you should reframe your thinking To be clear, right now in life I choose to take on freelance but I don’t necessarily have to and I realize this doesn't apply to everyone. I make enough at the day job to cover bills, groceries, gas and the occasional pizza to treat myself. However, I’m not bringing in enough to save for a kid, take Perspective-Collective full-time and attack student loans. This is why I choose freelance but more intentionally than before. I’ve grown to be selective now and target one “Hell Yes” project per month. Only one as I still have the day job, podcast and husband duties that take priority. If no “Hell Yes” opportunities present themselves, my wife and I will be fine and I can focus on other things to push Perspective-Collective forward. The old me would have settled for the first project that popped up due to scarcity mindset. I was willing to trade my sanity and satisfaction as I felt this opportunity would never come again and neither would the small chunk of change that accompanied it. Always remind yourself that there are plenty of more projects coming your way if you happen to pass on one. Operating Out of Guilt On the other end of the spectrum is feeling guilted or obligated to do work for friends and family. I have zero problems doing pro-bono work for family or friends when it’s: for a good cause and is convenient for my schedule However, the people closest to you seem to always want a hookup or some type of freebie. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had some family or friends guilt me into doing work for them. Other times they get outraged when I tell them my pricing or simply reply with a professional / polite no. Especially in a small town of Iowa where $50 for a logo is the going rate, people act like you’re crazy and proceed to talk shit about you behind your back. As you continue to invest your life, effort, sweat, blood, tears and money into your craft, you'll realize the value of what you produce and how sacred your time is. Over time you'll see that true friends and family will understand and respect you, even if they don’t like your response. The rest don’t matter and it’s cool to trim the fat and reduce your circle. I get the feeling of wanting to please people but you’re better off saying no to free you up for bigger “Hell Yes” opportunities coming your way. Decision-Making - Hell Yes Only It feels like a ton of pressure has been lifted off my shoulders after adopting this motto. Pulling the trigger with decision-making is so much easier in my opinion when you operate based on a simple Yes or No. You’re always going to be faced with tough decisions, but if you can get by without taking on a mediocre project, then do it. If people want to judge or talk shit because you quoted them “too high” or because you said no, who cares—that’s their problems. Simplify your decision-making and free up your time for the projects that excite you. Function from a mindset of “If it’s not a Hell Yes, then it’s a Hell No” and keep moving forward. Key Takeaways Saying no creates more time for the work that excites you. Your most valuable asset isn’t money, it’s your time. Saying yes to mediocre things means you're saying no to the things you really want to do. There are plenty of more projects coming your way if you happen to pass on one. Pulling the trigger is so much easier when you operate based on a simple Yes or No. Shownotes Forefathers Group - Renasaisnce Photoshop Product Design Inc. - Marc Hemeon & Joel Beukelman 70ish Life and Business Lessons for Designers Music by Blookah
