Have you ever felt that you were constantly busy, but not necessarily productive in terms of achieving your highest-level goals? In today's hectic world, it's easy to become overwhelmed by competing priorities, which may cause us to lose sight of what is most important in our lives. An approach known as “essentialism” offers an antidote to this common problem. Greg McKeown, our guest in Episode 221 of The Mindset Game® podcast, is the author of two New York Times bestsellers: “Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less” and “Effortless: Make It Easier to Do What Matters Most.” He is also one of the most sought-after public speakers globally, having spoken to over 500 companies while traveling to over 40 countries, and his work has been covered in several leading publications. Greg's clients include Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Nike. He is also the host of The Greg McKeown Podcast, which has been ranked in the top five of all self-improvement podcasts and ranked top 10 in educational podcasts. In this week's episode, Greg discusses the following:  The concept of essentialism and its three parts: exploring what is essential, creating space to eliminate what is non-essential, and making it as effortless as possible to do what matters most Simple tests, such as the longevity and intergenerational tests, and other techniques to help you identify what is essential amongst competing priorities  Key mindset shifts that are necessary for living an essentialist life  The 85% rule, which embodies the idea that working in an optimal state – rather than at maximum, 10x intensity – will yield better, more sustainable results in the long run To learn more about Greg and access his resources, visit https://gregmckeown.com.  To learn more about The Mindset Game®, visit www.TheMindsetGame.com. His latest book is 'Effortless: Make It Easier to Do What Matters Most'. In addition to writing Greg is also the host of the 'What's Essential Podcast'. We talk about turning tedious tasks into enjoyable rituals, setting a sustainable pace instead of having to power through and easy setting up of one time choices that eliminate many future decisions, simplifying processes, removing unnecessary steps, making relationships easier to maintain and manage. This is all under that umbrella of effortless making things that matter most easier to do and this is a great conversation and a great book to kick start that process in your life. In addition to discussing Essentialism, we talk about Greg's follow up to that book, Effortless: Make It Easier to Do What Matters Most. “Burnout is not a badge of honor. It is true that hard work can equal better results. But this is true only to a point… All too often, we sacrifice our time, our energy, and even our sanity, almost believing that sacrifice is essential in and of itself... ...what if, instead, we took the opposite approach? If instead of pushing ourselves to, and in some cases well past, our limit, we sought out an easier path?” —Greg McKeown A few week's ago we explored McKeown's book Essentialism and this week we jump straight into his follow up book, “Effortless: Make It Easier to Do What Matters Most.” Personally, I love grit. And hard work. And sweat. That feeling when I'm in the zone, where everything just flows and all time and surroundings disappear. Then there's the feeling where there are a million to-dos on a very long list and I'm waking up in the middle of the night, exhausted, but still feeling the push to get up and start crossing things off that list. Then I read these words from Effortless: “Relaxing is a responsibility.” Wow. How does that sit with you? Kind of uncomfortable right? I invite you to take this journey together into how we can reach that effortless state while dedicating more of our time to what truly matters to each of us. Because I'm working on it and I think we're both going to get so much out of it. Let's do this.

What We Discuss with Greg McKeown: If you want 10x the results of any endeavor without putting in 10x the effort, it's important to understand your ROE (return on effort). How the disciplined pursuit of less keeps you from getting overwhelmed with unexpected options and opportunities that come from what should be the good news of success. Why, if you find yourself procrastinating on a project because it's not perfect enough to your liking, you should delay a bad first draft and create a truly awful zero draft. Why "easy" does not (always) equal "lazy" and what you can do to work smarter rather than harder to avoid earning the meaningless badge of honor that burnout has become in the modern workforce. Five questions to ask yourself before taking on a project that's in danger of being overthought, overwhelming, and anything but effortless. And much more... When we're failing to do the things that are most important in our lives, the typical diagnosis of the problem is to believe we're simply not working hard enough, and the typical solution to the problem is to put in more effort, apply more discipline, and grind it out. My guest would say that we're thinking about both the root and the remedy of the issue in the wrong way. His name is Greg McKeown, and he's the author of the bestseller Essentialism, as well as his latest book, Effortless: Make It Easier to Do What Matters Most. Today on the show, Greg shares how he came to realize that life isn't just about focusing on the essentials, but making those essential things the easy things. We discuss why it is that we commonly make things harder than they need to be, and how while the right thing can be hard, just because something is hard, doesn't make it the right thing. We then discuss the role that emotions like gratitude play in making things feel more effortless, why you need to have a clear vision of what being done looks like (including having a Done for the Day list), how to overcome the difficulty of getting started with things through microbursts of action, and how to keep going with them using a sustainable pace marked by upper and lower bounds. We end our conversation with how seeking an effortless state applies to one's spiritual life. Along the way, Greg shares stories from history and his own life as to what it means to get to your goals using a more effortless path. Get the show notes at aom.is/effortless. We tend to think that important and valuable work has to be hard. This could be writing a book, leading a team, designing a new product, running a business, or preparing a presentation. But too much effort is counterproductive when it leads to chronic stress, health problems, sleep issues, and burnout. You first need to decide where to focus your energy. Once you determine the essentials, how do you make them as easy as possible to do?   Work can be effortless if you break it down into small, easy to manage chunks. It can also feel effortless if you pair it with a fun activity.  In episode 22 of The Incrementalist podcast, you will learn three big ideas for Effortless Productivity: 1) How to move into an Effortless State (i.e., think the most essential things can be the easiest to do).  Invert Enjoy Release Rest Notice 2) How to take Effortless Action (i.e., do find the easier path) Define Start Simplify Progress Pace 3) How to get Effortless Results (i.e., get the right results without burning out) Learn Lift Automate Trust Prevent 4) What happens next matters most. Whatever happened in the past pales in comparison to the power you have to choose what to do now.  Instead of working harder and harder, and exhausting and burning yourself out, you can choose a more effortless path. 5) The Incrementalist ebook is on sale for $4.99, until June 20. To experience success, you've got to grind yourself to the bone until the tank is empty —right? No, thank you. But how often do we do unnecessary work —simply because it feels like we should? I know I have, and I've met too many people who may be "successful" but are exhausted and burned the hell out. We need a new paradigm, and that's what my guest today is all about —Greg McKeown. Greg has dedicated his career to discovering why some people break through to the next level and others don’t. The definitive treatment of this issue is addressed in McKeown’s New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. As well as frequently being the #1 Time Management book on Amazon, this book challenges core assumptions about achievement to get to the essence of what really drives success. In this episode with Greg, we dive into his brand new book, Effortless: Make It Easier to Do What Matters Most.

Greg taught us how overthinking leads to clutter and less mental energy, and emphasized that we must declutter our brains. We discussed burnout and how there are only two types of people in the world right now, those who are burnt out and those who acknowledge they are burnt out. Greg gives us tools on how to spot burnout and teaches us that past a certain point, working harder leads to negative results...it’s not worth the burnout. We learned that through journaling, making our chores fun and giving them purpose, being more present and CHOOSING to take the lighter vs the heaver path we can all start to live a more effortless life. Greg teaches us that instead of saying “how can I work harder to get better results?” say “how can I achieve better results by making it more effortless?” We also discuss the power of having the ‘courage to be rubbish’ or not being held down by perfectionism, which is crucial to living more effortlessly.
