Welcome to Episode 61! In this episode, I explore the often-taboo subject of vaginal health and its profound impact on women's overall well-being. Join me, Lizzie Alexander, the host of the Endo Fertility podcast, as I talk about the importance of maintaining a healthy vagina, the role of hormones like estrogen, and how conditions such as endometriosis and infections can affect vaginal health. We provide insights and actionable tips to help you take charge of your reproductive health. EPISODES HIGHLIGHT: The significance of a healthy vaginal microbiome and its role in preventing infections. Common types of vaginal infections, including yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and how they can impact fertility. Symptoms indicating potential issues with vaginal health, such as itching, burning sensations, and unusual discharge. The relationship between hormonal changes, pregnancy, and vaginal health. RESOURCES MENTIONED: pH Testing Kits: Available at pharmacies or online, these kits help monitor your vaginal pH levels throughout your menstrual cycle. Be sure to buy a pH range of 3.5 up to 6.5+. One example from amazon here. Probiotics: Specific strains like Lactobacillus crispatus can be beneficial for maintaining a healthy vaginal microbiome - I love to use Invivo Healthcare's FemmeV (oral and vaginal use) - buy from Amrita Nutrition here* to get 10% off (use my practitioner code: B6SV6H). N-Acetylcysteine (NAC): A supplement that can help break down biofilms created by bacteria, making it easier to treat recurrent infections. It is also great for supporting endometriosis by reducing lesions and cysts (Bahat et al., 2022), improving fertility outcomes (Anastasi et al., 2023) and supporting detoxification. I love Pure Encapsulations* and Now* (with Selenium). Vaginal Microbiome testing: there are a number of examples that I use in my clinic, e.g. Invivo Healthcare Vaginal EcologiX (International but not US), Evvy (US), Juno Bio - if you want to know more or help with testing just contact me (details below). ACTIONABLE TIPS: A number of actionable tips were discussed including: Regular pH testing to monitor vaginal health. The importance of understanding your microbiome. Dietary recommendations to support vaginal and gut health. Probiotic use for maintaining a balanced vaginal environment. >>Endo Fertility Podcast Goodie Bag

With great power comes great responsibility, right? But does the “Peter Parker principle” still apply when you are the undisputed king of the entire vitamins, minerals, and supplements (VMS) market? Even before the “Great Shutdown” period, “household, health, and baby care” was the largest consumable category on the Amazon marketplace…of which “vitamins, supplements, and sports nutrition” was the biggest subcategory. But the 2020s has seen Amazon's power within the supplement industry become even more impactful…as the rate at which the retail giant is gobbling market share is unprecedented and seems almost limitless at this point. And much of its success can be attributed to the famous “Amazon Flywheel.” Customers love the almost endless selection, lower pricing, and overall customer experience on Amazon. Brands enjoy the lower barriers-to-entry on Amazon…knowing they can reach people immediately, generally at a lower cost structure. This allows more opportunity for innovation from those supplement brands, thus making Amazon an incubator of product attributes and trends. Right now, it's estimated that four out of every five online transactions for supplements happen on Amazon. Moreover, ecommerce accounts for over 25 percent of total supplements market sales. According to recent SPINS 52-week data for the period ending May 19, 2024…Amazon sold $14.88 billion in VMS products, which was up an astounding 22.4% YoY. If you were wondering how that stacks up against the portion of supplement sales at other major retailers, Amazon's lead is significant…to the tune of more than double the second-largest VMS selling retailer. But as Amazon continues to grow, supplement brands face the stark reality of figuring out how to navigate an increasingly dynamic online marketplace environment. Amazon can no longer be a passive sales channel and supplement brands (small and large) should be using every tool the online marketplace offers to help drive sales performance. Currently within the VMS category on Amazon, the top 5 sellers are Garden of Life, Optimum Nutrition, Now Foods, Pure Encapsulations, and Nutricost. I'll also share some top growing Amazon supplements brands and breakdown performance in subcategories like Protein, Hydration, Pre-workout powders, Greens, and Creatine. But four months ago, in my last supplement industry content piece related to Amazon, you might remember that I left off by declaring that despite the increased run-ins with the FDA recently…I didn't believe the leading online marketplace wouldn't indulge in the “poison pill scenario” that was defined by me as totally abandoning the supplement categories. Instead, Amazon would figure out how to increase its compliance hurdles to appease governmental agencies and supplement industry stakeholders. So, in an sort of industry disrupting move, Amazon increased its compliance hurdles to appease these various parties…starting initially with hot button FDA supplement subcategories like sexual enhancement, weight management, and sports nutrition. Amazon's new policy mandates that the company selling supplements in those beforementioned subcategories must receive third-party testing documentation directly from either Eurofins, UL Solutions, or NSF International…which are currently the only testing, inspection, and certification firms qualified by Amazon. Additionally, the testing requirements have expanded a bit past the original GMP compliance and label claim verification.

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Austin Cavelli. She helps people optimize their health by burning fat for fuel and reducing years of underlying inflammation from the standard American diet. Her approach focuses on quality nutrition by way of nutrient-dense animal products. This episode originally aired in August 2021. Austin is a board-certified, nationally accredited physician assistant. I have treated thousands of patients with acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, including various autoimmune conditions. In addition, Austin has worked for several years in research studying addiction and the aging brain. Austin's background in research has taught her how to conduct experiments, a skill that has proven extremely useful in helping clients find what works specifically for them. In 2014, Austin earned my Master of Science degree from Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences in NYC. Prior, Austin received her bachelor's degree in psychobiology from Binghamton University. In this episode, Austin opens the show by explaining why she started following a carnivore diet. After years and years of digestive issues, the carnivore diet finally put Austin on the track to a healthy life. Austin explains what antinutrients are and why they could be causing some of your health symptoms. We talk about common myths like not eating fiber will cause constipation and the alleged link between red meat and cancer. Tune in as we chat about the importance of electrolytes, organ meats, and reintroducing keto foods into your diet. Register your FREE spot for our upcoming 7 day keto challenge. [02:20] Why Austin Decided To Follow A Carnivore Diet Austin struggled mainly with digestive issues for most of her life. She suffered from chronic constipation and chronic pains with food. So, Austin tried a paleo diet and cut out diary. Eventually, Austin noticed that when she cut out certain vegetables, her digestion was getting better. Then, she realized more fats would make her feel better. It wasn't until Austin went carnivore and cut out fiber that made her digestive issues go away. [06:30] Antinutrients Could Be The Reason For Your Symptoms Joint pain is a big issue. Antinutrients can also cause chronic constipation. Also, antinutrients can be hindering your mental clarity and sleep. Lastly, antinutrients may be causing low energy levels. Switching to carnivore can vastly improve mental clarity, sleep, energy, digestion, and joint pain. [08:35] Why You May Want To Ditch The Antinutrients Take away antinutrients to see if your health improves. Antinutrients will affect every person differently. The gut will be most affected by antinutrients. In fact, they can even cause leaky gut. First, you have to clean the gut before you introduce probiotics. If you add probiotics to an unhealthy gut, then it's not going to help. Remove the antinutrients in order to heal the gut temporarily. [14:15] Do You Need Fiber To Have Regular Bowel Movements? People think that going on a carnivore diet will result in constipation. Other people say that the carnivore diet will result in explosive diarrhea. When switching to carnivore, the increased amount of fat could result in diarrhea. So, go heavy on protein instead of fat. Liquid fats will run right through you. [16:30] Why You Shouldn't Drink Water When You Are Eating Your Meals When you are eating a carnivore diet, you already have a lot of protein which requires stomach acid to break it down. To maximize stomach acid, prevent water 30 minutes before and after a meal. It takes our body more effort to digest cold water. Instead, drink room temperature water. When eating, it is best not to just stress the body and make sure that you can focus on the digestion of food. [17:45] Electrolytes Are Critical When Following A Carnivore Diet Austin is a minimalist when it comes to supplements. If you are going to eat organs, then eat the actual organs. Supplements are processed, so it's time to eliminate those from your diet when possible. If you are starting a carnivore diet, then you need more electrolytes. Take a magnesium supplement; it's not readily available in our soil anymore. Austin recommends Pure Encapsulations: https://www.pureencapsulations.com/ [22:00] Why You Should Eat Organ Meat And How To Make It Taste Good Liver is the most bang for your buck. The beef heart is very mild. Another organ that is easy on flavor is the beef tongue. Slow cooking the beef tongue will make it easy to consume. [26:45] Can I Get Cancer From Eating Too Much Red Meat? Keto and carnivore have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. The red meat studies were not accurate – they were not looking at just the consumption of red meat. Everything comes down to inflammation. When you reduce antinutrients, you are reducing inflammation. By doing these things, you are actually reversing your chances of getting cancer. The number one cancer center in the United States is promoting a ketogenic diet. [32:50] How To Transition From Carnivore To Keto Depending on what foods trigger your symptoms will depend on how you want to transition from carnivore to keto. For instance, if sweet things trigger your symptoms, then you may want to avoid fruits. However, if sweet foods are not your trigger, then you can start to reintroduce berries back into your diet. Avocado is a safe food to bring back into your diet. Also, some people even cut out eggs when they go on a carnivore diet. That's another food item you can start incorporating when getting back to the keto lifestyle. AND MUCH MORE! Thanks to registered dietician Brittyn Coleman , MS, RDN/LD, CLT , this episode focuses on some of the many dietary considerations that may be made in determining what is the best diet so that some people on the spectrum can increase their quality of life. In this episode, we first talk about GI issues discovered in the earlier days of our daughter's autism journey. After thinking that these challenges were properly addressed, we discovered recently that this was not quite the case. We realized the need to add a dietician to our medical team in order to properly address issues concerning the gut, especially in light of an understanding of the gut-brain connection, was important to her development as she continued to age. Brittyn drops many nuggets of wisdom on how families can start learning how to optimally feed the body with neurodiversity in mind. Her website is available here and she is also available on Instagram at @autismdietitian. Earlier on in the episode, references are made to the Cleveland Clinic's explanation of the gut-brain connection, available on their website. Brittyn also referenced the following companies when discussing supplements: Seeking Health , Klaire Labs, Pure Encapsulations and Designs for Health. full show notes @ https://thesternmethod.com/lise-alschuler Lise Alschuler is a naturopathic doctor with board certification in naturopathic oncology. She is the co-author of a book I highly recommend called The Definitive Guide to Cancer. She co-created iTHRIVE, a cancer survivorship programme and co-hosts a radio show, Five To Thrive Live! on the Cancer Support Network. In 2008, Dr. Lise was diagnosed with breast cancer. She integrated natural supplements, diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes throughout her treatment and is 10 years cancer free! She now incorporates the learnings of her own, firsthand experience into her work to help others facing the challenges of this disease. ***Resources Mentioned*** Dr Lise’s Website Dr Lise’s Book - The Definitive Guide to Cancer Five to Thrive Live – radio show / podcast iTHRIVE: Free survivorship programme ListenAndCare.com Cortisol Manager Suntheanine Nature's Way lavender product *** In This Episode: The topic of this podcast is one that’s particularly close to home for Teddy and I. When Teddy was pregnant with Ryder, she experienced immense amounts of stress from a negative work environment. We often wonder about the impact this stress had on our son and if it was responsible, at least in part, for his cancer. So it’s a topic I was really excited to explore, and there’s no one better to do this with than Dr. Lise Alschuler. In this episode Dr. Lise explains the potential negative effects that stress can have on the body, including cancer progression and relapse, and what we can do to mitigate stress and anxiety in our lives. What led you to becoming a naturopathic doctor specializing in cancer? Took an undergrad class at medical school. Many people diagnosed with cancer shared their journey Each person was unique, authentic, honest, courageous Wanted to treat these kinds of people, so decided to get into oncology Passion was in integrative medicine. Pulled out of medical school to study naturopathic medicine Offered position at cancer hospital and discovered integrative oncology Fascinated with the transformative element that a cancer diagnosis invokes in people Dr. Lise’s father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Lived past his prognosis using integrative oncology Two years later Dr. Lise was diagnosed with breast cancer and experienced integrative oncology firsthand She felt healthy throughout conventional treatment despite side effects Can you talk to the importance of mindset and effective stress mitigation strategies? We often try to create linear relationship between cause and effect Cancer is multifactorial – can't appoint blame to any one thing Take control of what we can. Modify our relationship to stress Latest research shows correlation between high levels of stress and cancer progression or recurrence, rather than initial diagnosis Cancer rates increase amongst individuals who have experienced significant stressors in their lives e.g. death of loved one or marriage break up Cancer cells have been growing for 10-20 years before they get large enough to be identified as a tumor. Stress can accelerate what's already present Stress is just one factor behind tumor acceleration All changeable through stress modification What are you finding on the relationship between stress and prognosis? Studies look at impact of the biomarkers of stress on cancer patient outcomes Study on advanced breast cancer patients Divided study participants by their circadian rhythms – healthy circadian patterns indicative of a healthy stress response Study showed women with flat circadian rhythms had chronic stress and died sooner – highly statistically significant. Had less immune function Cortisol suppresses our natural killer cells and other essential bodily functions Similar results seen on studies of people with colon and lung cancer The importance of social networks Feeling socially isolated has a negative effect on prognosis Not the quantity but the quality of connections with others How do we know if it’s mental or external stressors behind the disruption of circadian rhythm as opposed to environmental influences e.g exposure to too much blue light? Inflammatory cytokines are elevated throughout the body when there is a constant stress response When stress mitigation strategies are implemented a positive change seen in circadian rhythms and inflammatory cytokines reduced “Psychological wellbeing is like a firehose on inflammatory cytokines” Note for parents of young children Clear link between early childhood stress and adult susceptibility to cancer An elevated stress response system becomes hardwired Start stress modification techniques early e.g. meditation through guided imagery, creative play, good rest How do you counsel people to get their mental well being under control? Step back and look at the bigger picture – where is identifiable stress coming from? What you change to bring more of yourself into the world in a positive way? Other factors: Sleep – enough, quality, hygiene, light exposure in the morning Melatonin controls circadian rhythms and sleep. Often deficient in people with chronic disease Aren’t there negative effects of supplementing something your body produces naturally? Melatonin has a very short halflife. We don’t habituate to it Melatonin has anti-cancer properties and is a potent antioxidant. Restores health of the pineal gland, reenabling melatonin production In theory the body could develop resistance to melatonin. Long term users should take breaks and adjust dosage Long-term use of any supplementation poses risks in terms of resistance With kids, be conservative with anything in the hormone category Back to stress mitigation strategies Avoid sleep medication if you have cancer. Try a natural first Regular, daily, vigorous exercise at the edge of your fitness Exercise creates healthier circadian rhythms, fewer inflammatory cytokines, healthier immune systems, blood sugar control What would say to someone going through conventional treatment where the last thing they feel like doing is exercise? Still need to exercise but drop the intensity General rule of thumb: recovery time after exercise should be no more than half the exercise time when on treatment. If longer to recover then over doing it If lost muscle mass tai chi, yoga, walking are better options Rebounding What’s next after exercise? Diet. Correlation between Mediterranean or anti inflammatory diet and lower stress hormones and inflammatory cytokines Plant-led diet with no process foods – more resilience to stress Refined sugar is a stressor Majority of diet should be plant-based Too much meat is carcinogenic Plants and herbal medicine Two for one – manage stress and anti-cancer potential Diverse gut microbiome – prebiotics, high fibre fermets Lower anxiety and better stress response, immune function and response to conventional treatment Adaptogens – plants that can reinstate circadian rhythm e.g. American Ginseng Ashwagandha, Holy Basil Brands Dr Lise recommends: Gaia Herbs, Vital Nutrients (Verified Quality is their consumer brand), Pure Encapsulations, Integrative Therapeutics (product called Cortisol Manager) and Solaray To reduce anxiety, Dr Lise recommends L-theanine (in particular, products containing Suntheanine) and lavender extract. Silexan is a lavender oil formula that is used in supplements. Dr Lise recommends a Nature's Way product. Mindfulness and meditation Mindfulness starts with breathing. Exercises like the 4, 7, 8 breath Great meditation apps. 10 minute guided meditations Tai chi, yoga or qigong – moving meditation Explore different types of meditation Headspace and Calm apps are mindful meditation There are other types e.g transcendental meditation and loving-kindness meditation Follow Dr Lise https://www.drlise.net/ If you have a question or comment about this episode let us know below!!

Life With Herpes What you need to know to prevent herpes outbreaks. https://youtu.be/y2OZcjoLon0 Prior to being diagnosed with herpes you probably never heard of arginine and lysine. At least I never did. I am pretty sure it was covered in biology class at some point in high school but not being the science geek that stuff went right out of my memory bank. So what is all this fuss over arginine and lysine and how does it affect people living with herpes? Here are the deets. Let’s go back to science class. Remember what amino acids or essential proteins do? I had to pull this way out of my memory file. Amino acids are the building blocks of our muscles and really each muscle is what shapes our body so they are pretty important. Perhaps when you were in biology your teacher used the visual example of legos. Remember when you completed your lego house and it was all put together well imagine that each leggo is an amino acid. Each leggo fits and builds on top of the other one to make the big lego house. It’s the same with amino acids they all go together and to build your muscles. Amino acids do other cool stuff that is essential for the synthesis of proteins, enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, metabolic pathways, mental stabilization, and just about every function that takes place within the human body. So they are pretty important. Essential amino acids are...wait for it…essential. They are essential because our bodies can not make them on our own so in order to function properly, we have to consume them in our diet. There’s a whole long list of the essential amino acids but for our purpose, we are interested in Arginine and Lysine. We need both of them in our diets in order to live a healthy life and have our bodies function properly. If your going….what’s this got to do with herpes just hang in there a bit longer :-) So what do these two do in the body? Well, arginine improves cardiovascular health, increases blood flow and helps with athletic ability. You will find that there’s a lot of arginine in athletic performance drinks and supplements. Lysine is helpful with growth hormones as well as for athletes and people who are active because it helps the muscles repair and recover. It’s also used for fat digestion, lowering cholesterol, forming collagen and absorbing calcium. Both arginine and lysine are important and we need them in our system. Here’s where lysine and arginine come into play with herpes. The herpes virus needs arginine to breed. Without arginine, it can’t multiply. It’s basically fuel to the fire and it feeds the virus which makes it multiple and thus you get an outbreak. If you have an outbreak and continue to feed it with herpes lighter fluid then guess what happens. You guessed it, it keeps the outbreak active longer and can even cause more lesions. So not a good combo. On the contrary, lysine suffocates the herpes virus. The virus cannot replicate when lysine is present. So when using the lighter fluid analogy it's like a fire extinguisher to the virus. Lysine and Arginine play a pretty big role in preventing your herpes outbreaks. Now if your thinking, “great I will just eliminate all arginine from my diet and only eat lysine so I never get another outbreak” that's what I thought too. However, this won't work and as I explained earlier, both are essential and we need both arginine and lysine in our diets to live life. But here is what you can do to help fight the herpes fire. You can cut back on the high arginine foods, increase the lysine foods and the pro tip is take daily lysine supplements. By adding a little bit extra lysine to your diet it can help keep the herpes virus dormant or if you get an outbreak lysine will help speed up the healing process and keep it at bay. I use the Pure Encapsulations of I-Lysine, click here to buy. I take 1000mg daily and 3000mg if I have an outbreak. Sometimes when I feel my immune system is low or if I have overindulged in high arginine foods then I will up my does for the day. Give them a try. Also, please remember if you have any questions to consult with your doctor before taking supplements. Make sure your body can handle them and you don't have any cross-reactions. Ok? Ali shares her story of home birth turned hospital cesarean and how she took action to ensure optimal health for herself and her baby, Stella. It's a truly inspiring story! Because our conversation was jam-packed with resources to support those planning or recovering from a cesarean birth, we decided to split the episode into two parts. Topics discussed in Part 1 (episode 69): Ali's story Her original birth plan and how that changed How she managed the change in birth plan (emotionally, mentally, physically) The differences between a gentle (or natural or family-centered) cesearean and a traditional cesarean Topics discussed in Part 2 (episode 70): Concerns of cesarean sections How to address these concerns with a food-as-medicine, functional medicine approach Considerations for mom and baby Vaginal inoculation and supplements Low-carb, moderate protein, high-fat diets during pregnancy and nursing How Ali feeds her toddler Ali's practice, cookbook, and services Ali's bio: Ali Miller is an integrative functional medicine practitioner with a background in naturopathic medicine.
