Few films have done more to reimagine a fairy tale than Ever After: A Cinderella Story, Andy Tennant's 1998 period drama that stripped the magical elements from one of the world's oldest stories and replaced it with real historical characters, and a heroine who rescues herself.Set in Renaissance-era France and shot entirely on location across the Dordogne, the film marked a quiet revolution in the Cinderella canon, arriving at a precise cultural moment between Disney's pastel dominance and the full flowering of girl power that would follow in the late 90s and beyond. The story of Ever After goes from the ancient origins of the Cinderella myth, through the literary transformations of Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, and Rossini's opera, to the cultural watershed of Disney's 1950 animated classic and the Rodgers and Hammerstein television musicals that rewrote what the story could mean for successive generations of young women. Ever After sits in that lineage, and its particular brand of post-feminist revisionism hit hard in the summer of 1998. It broke away from typical fairy tale clichés, offering a fresh take that emphasizes empowerment and self-determination for women in a historical context.Drew Barrymore, working as an unofficial producer, personally cast Anjelica Huston with a phone call invoking their shared Hollywood dynasties, went to bat for a rejected Dougray Scott, and designed the film's emotional core around a character she saw as a manifesto for her own future. For Barrymore, then navigating the transition from dangerous ingénue to bankable leading lady, Danielle de Barbarac was not simply a role, it was who she intended to become.Ever After's place in the broader arc of Cinderella adaptations, its enduring resonance with the generation that grew up with it, leaves it with the everlasting legacy of being one of the best adaptations of the story, loved by viewers, and its cast. Ever After managed to capture the essence of love and resilience, reminding us that true magic lies in our actions and connections with others, not just fairy godmothers and pixie dust.Support Verbal DioramaLoved this episode? Villain Essays written by Cathi Colas.Alas, this is the last episode of this book. Next season will be a surprise (for me as well as you). But today we have Snow White and the Evil Queen. We all age out of the beauty market at one point, but thankfully we don't all become deranged. Or we get just a little deranged and leave it at that. Again, beauty prevails, but the Queen does have something to say about it. Then in the Afterwards, we tie up this little glimpse into the lives of our princesses and villains. I hope you have all enjoyed listening to Grimm Women as much as I enjoyed putting it together.Stay tuned next week. We'll either be going to Sea or an English Garden. Enjoy. In this episode of I Remember Liking That Movie, we head back to the Renaissance for a supposedly smarter, more grounded take on Cinderella with Ever After from 1998. Starring Drew Barrymore, Anjelica Huston, and Dougray Scott, the film ditches fairy godmothers and magic in favor of historical realism… and somehow still finds room for Leonardo da Vinci. One of us remembers this one as the “classy” Cinderella, the version with brains, attitude, and a heroine who can quote philosophy while throwing apples at royalty. One of us has never seen it. We'll let you guess who is who. So does this prestige fairy tale still charm, or does it feel more like a history lecture wrapped in corsets? Join us as we revisit mean stepmothers, awkward princes, suspiciously convenient Renaissance geniuses, and a fairy tale that may or may not be taking itself way too seriously. Does Ever After still hold up… or did one of us just remember liking it, and will the other even like it?
Hello my friends and welcome to another edition of my vinyl show. This installment revolves around my Frank Sinatra 45 collection. Some of my favorite old pieces and live performances. Sure, some of them sound terrible but get over it. I really enjoy them and it's what I wanted to do ova hea now for this episode. It did run a little short this week but I didn't want to play every Sinatra record or dig too deep into the Tony Bennett bag. Once I get to a certain spot in the Bennett bag you know Dean Martin and Jerry Vale's greatest hits will enter the chat and by that point it's all over. The Close To You mashup I expanded this episode to contain the Sinatra, Stevie Wonder talkbox live, Frank Ocean on vinyl and one of Ocean's live performances of the song from a few years back. As much as I like Burt Bacharach, the original version of the song is absolute garbage and will never see the light of day in my mashup. Sorry, Burt. The poor unassuming people have no idea that I'm publishing this podcast, putting on a sick hoochie daddy fit and I plan on kicking the door down at this card show. Taking the place by storm. No prisoners no mercy. Today I happily expand my Pokemon portfolio as a 33 year old man with no friends and absolutely no hint of a love life. Getting ready for this card show all I hear in my head is Russell Crowe. "Three weeks from now, I will be harvesting my crops. Imagine where you will be, and it will be so. Hold the line. Stay with me. If you find yourself alone, riding in green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium and you are already dead. Brothers.. What we do in life.. Echoes in eternity." Maybe I'll be a super sick internet disc jockey forever in Elysium's comparative platforms to the interwebs. Maybe I'll forever be a super sick bro that totally crushes the local card scene of the Everafter. Not selling, but I am bringing some old stuff from my childhood to show the Brodie that works at the store. Just showing up to gloat my KD, Harden and Steph rookies. Some Jordan inserts. Whatever. I couldn't be more fired up about it. Hope you enjoyed the Frank The Tank installment, your favorite internet disc jockey will be here next timeThe Captain Kirk of this Enterprise,Throbert Duvall

This week we're diving into a deliciously '90s time capsule: Zev Borow's 1998 Detour magazine profile of Drew Barrymore, complete with stunning photos by the one and only David LaChapelle. Written in France while 22-year-old Drew was filming Ever After, the piece captures her falling hard for Luke Wilson, teaming up with Adam Sandler for The Wedding Singer, and reflecting on her complicated family dynamics—all while being self-aware, giggly as ever, and determined to live “further.” Grab a glass, clink it properly (no half-ass “cheerzing”!), and join us as we revisit this unforgettable snapshot of our favorite flower child.Visit us on the web:@howdoyoudrewpod / howdoyoudrew.com@drewseum / thedrewseum.compatreon.com/howdoyoudrew

Send a textWelcome to Season 3. For the next few weeks, we will be presenting GRIMM WOMEN: And the End of Ever After. Original Grimm tales written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The Introduction, Afterwards, and Villain Voices written by Cathi Colas. This still falls under the realm of Classics, but with a twist. I brought together some of the more memorable Grimmcesses and since I have always been on the other side of that coin, I wanted to hear from their antagonists. So, they have a say in this too.I wasn't sure, when I was putting this together, whether it was still relevant. But I was having an eye-opening conversation with my daughter the other day and I realized that even today, the damage done by Disney to little girls remains. Disney has way better role models now, but back in the day, not so much. My daughter is getting married in June. She is planning an extravaganza for a wedding. Unfortunately for her, her parents come from plain stock, so the bill is being footed by my daughter and her fiancé, who don't have this kind of cash. I asked her why she was doing this and not putting the money down on say, a house? She told me that all her life she dreamed of the ‘fairytale' wedding. She spent her childhood watching Disney princesses and she almost felt programmed to want this. Not only that, she felt she deserved it. My daughter is truly a Disney princess come to life. She is beautiful, ethereal, but she is also 31. When do we release the litany of messages that bombard us with the belief that with beauty comes the promise we will have it all. Did I do this to my daughter. Probably in the beginning. The collection of old VHS movies gathering dust in the attic is testament to my indoctrinating her. I didn't mean to do this. I just wanted her to be quiet for an hour.Anyway, this is my take on beauty, Grimmcesses, the voices of the villains, and the end of ever after. I promise a way shorter Intro next week. Here we go. BGMania B-Sides #41 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bedroth steps into Escape from Ever After, a recently released indie title that twists classic fairy tale imagery into something far more eerie, introspective, and emotionally charged. What begins as a familiar storybook setup slowly unravels into a dreamlike escape, where whimsy and unease exist side by side and nothing quite feels as safe or predictable as it should. The soundtrack mirrors that tonal shift beautifully, blending delicate melodies, melancholic textures, and subtly unsettling atmospheres that feel hand-stitched to the game's world. Soft instrumentation gives way to darker harmonic turns, creating music that feels reflective, fragile, and quietly tense without ever becoming overwhelming. It's a score that invites you to linger, to feel the weight behind the fantasy, and to sit with the uneasy question of what “happily ever after” really means once the curtain is pulled back. Email the show at bgmaniapodcast@gmail.com with requests for upcoming episodes, questions, feedback, comments, concerns, or any other thoughts you'd like to share! Bonjour! Bienvenue à Renaissance France! (That means welcome to renaissance France in French!) (Also, no one speaks French in this movie except for "monsieur" and "madame"). We are discussing Ever After, a beautiful movie that flips the script on the classic fairytale trope way before its time. Danielle (or Daniella?) is a woman who don't need no man, and is more than willing to save the pouty prince in his castle. We get Leonardo di Vinci and his boat shoes playing the role of the fairy godmother, while the Baroness de Ghent (Anjelica Huston) SLAAAAYS as the evil step-mother. (I have been coaching Erin on Drag Queen terms) (Yeah, right!) We talk about so much from Henry XIII's divorces, Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel, to the anti-Pope and the Byzantine Empire (it was still the Roman Empire). We don't know how else to say it; we love this movie and every message it brings with it. Women are smart and powerful, the men need to stop moping and get to work, and we really want that painting of Drew Barrymore because it is actually a work of art.

In this episode, we are tackling the question most wedding business owners are quietly asking by February: why does the business still feel heavy even when things are going well? The simple answer is that growth does not come from adding more, it comes from letting go of what is draining you. Katie and Roxy share what they are shedding in 2026, what they are keeping, and how simplifying systems can reduce stress, admin, and missed opportunities so your business feels easier to run. This is a real, honest reset conversation for wedding suppliers who are busy, booked, and ready for things to feel calmer.Episode HighlightsWhy February is the real reset month, not JanuaryWhat we are shedding in 2026 and why it mattersThe hidden admin that quietly drains time and energyWhy wedding businesses need simpler systemsHow the right CRM can reduce stress and monthly spendWhat is coming up on the podcast this yearSponsorThis episode is sponsored by Ever After Systems, a CRM built specifically for the wedding industry. If you are juggling too many tools, losing track of enquiries, or carrying too much admin in your head, Ever After is worth a look. BIO: David Siegel is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who has founded more than a dozen companies. He has written five books on technology and business, was once a candidate for the dean of Stanford Business School, and is now an AI thought leader leading an AI startup he hopes will pave the way for the agentic economy.STORY: David invested heavily in launching a longevity coaching business, believing people would pay to extend their lives through lifestyle change. Despite strong science, personal results, and significant marketing spend, demand proved nearly nonexistent.LEARNING: A great idea without real demand is still a bad investment. “There will be many new problems, and whenever there are new problems, there's a new economic opportunity for many people.”David Siegel Guest profileDavid Siegel is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who has founded more than a dozen companies. He has written five books on technology and business, was once a candidate for the dean of Stanford Business School, and is now an AI thought leader leading an AI startup he hopes will pave the way for the agentic economy.Worst investment everAfter years of building companies and studying major technological shifts, David found himself pulled deeply into the longevity movement. This wasn't casual curiosity. He read more than 20 books, radically transformed his lifestyle, and developed a deep understanding of insulin resistance, nutrition, exercise, and long-term health. The results were personal and visible. David was fit, disciplined, and energized. The idea that science could help people live 10 to 15 years longer, with a higher quality of life, felt not only possible but urgent. Helping others do the same seemed like a natural next chapter.Turning passion into a businessConfident in both the science and his own experience, David decided to turn longevity coaching into a scalable business. His target audience was people in their 50s and 60s, individuals who were pre-diabetic or heading toward serious health issues and stood to benefit the most from early intervention. He approached the venture like a seasoned entrepreneur. He built funnels, ran Facebook ads, spoke at retirement communities, and spent months on discovery calls explaining how lifestyle changes could dramatically reduce the risk of cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes. This wasn't guesswork; it was disciplined execution. The painful reality checkThen reality set in.Despite spending over $100,000 on advertising and investing countless hours in conversations, demand was almost nonexistent. People listened. They nodded. They agreed the logic made sense. Then they walked away. Many believed the healthcare system would save them. Others hoped for a pill instead of discipline. Even those clearly facing insulin resistance weren't willing to make sustained lifestyle changes. The most sobering realization wasn't about marketing or pricing. It was this: most people don't actually want to live longer if it requires consistent effort.Accepting the lossIn the end, only about one percent of the people David spoke to were already doing the work and didn't need coaching. Everyone else opted out, fully aware of the consequences. The investment failed not because the science was wrong, but because the market wasn't there. David ultimately gave the information away for free and walked away from the business, having learned an expensive but clarifying lesson about belief versus demand.Lessons learned
