Philosopher Phillip Goff explores the nature of consciousness, reality, and the complexities of the human experience. He dives deep into pan-psychism and its surprising intersection with mystic religions. Drawing from his decades of research, he speaks on our finely-tuned universe, meaning/ purpose of life, quantum mechanics, and the Many World's Theory. The discussion culminates in a call to move beyond polarization and dogma in the pursuit of truth.Andrés Book Recs: https://www.knowthyself.one/books___________0:00 Intro2:07 Where the Great Thinkers of the Past Went Wrong5:53 Does the Brain Produce Consciousness?9:50 The Problem with the Verification Principle12:20 Do Our Senses Mislead Us?15:26 Panpsychism & The Hard Problem of Consciousness22:56 Complexity of Human Consciousness 26:26 Can Mathematics Ever Explain Consciousness? 30:47 How the Brain Correlates to Conscious Experience 34:46 Why It's So Hard to Solve This (Science is Asking the Wrong Questions) 38:33 Purpose & Meaning of Life40:26 Sentience in Objects, Plants, and Animals43:09 Where Panpsychism Meets Spirituality 46:38 An Ethical Structure to Reality49:42 Examples of How The Universe is Finely Tuned56:08 Making Sense of Life's Mystery 58:38 Teleological Laws of Nature1:02:13 Facing the Uncertainty of Reality 1:06:05 Examining Truth & Religion1:13:27 Addressing His Beliefs Around Christianity 1:25:13 The Mystical Side of Religions 1:32:53 Many World's Theory & Multiverses1:44:19 Going Beyond Quantum Physics1:50:25 Beyond Polarization & Dogma, Seeking Truth1:56:28 Conclusion ___________Episode Resources: https://philipgoffphilosophy.comhttps://amzn.eu/d/0O1FI6Ohttps://www.instagram.com/andreduqum/https://www.instagram.com/knowthyself/https://www.youtube.com/@knowthyselfpodcasthttps://www.knowthyself.oneListen to the show:Spotify: https://spoti.fi/4bZMq9lApple: https://apple.co/4iATICX

Asking the wrong questions can hold you back. @NatalieNixon explains how to ask divergent questions to become a great thinker. Natalie Nixon, a creativity strategist, emphasizes the importance of asking the right questions in order to foster innovation and creativity. She believes that inquiry and curiosity are crucial for driving innovation, as they can bridge information gaps and encourage expansive thinking. Nixon introduces the "Taxonomy of Questions," which includes divergent questions ("Why?", "What if...?", "I wonder...?") that promote big picture thinking, and convergent questions ("What?", "Where?", "When?") that provide tactical guidance. To thrive in an ambiguous world, we need to balance both types of questions, embracing creativity as a uniquely human trait that sets us apart from technology and automation. Nixon suggests becoming "clumsy students" of something new in order to build confidence in asking questions and seeking help. By practicing this discipline of inquiry, we can develop our ability to think differently and drive innovation. George Walsh (c.1923-2001) was one of those old-school professors who wrote little but read everything. These two lectures on Protestant Fundamentalism, delivered in the late-80s, distill decades of study of Protestant Fundamentalism with great insight and humor, handling the ideas with the same seriousness that intellectual historians normally reserve for the Great Thinkers of Western Philosophy. Lecture 1 covers fundamentalist theology and epistemology; lecture 2 delves into fundamentalist ethics and politics. The Salem Center's Bryan Caplan, who heard Walsh live in 1989, has plans to make all of Walsh's “lost” lectures on the history of ideas once again available to the curious public.

If you're looking for the best philosophy books, this is the ultimate list of unique reading suggestions.
In the book Great Thinkers, The School of Life (as the organisation often does) brings the ancient philosophical teachings for modern problems. I discuss the chapter on Stoics and what they prescribed for the problem of anxiety.

But since my intent is to write something useful to whoever understands it, it has appeared to me more fitting to go directly to the effectual truth of the thing than to the imagination of it. — Niccolo Machiavelli, in Chapter 15 of The Prince. According to Harvey Mansfield, these lines including the phrase effectual truth—a term invented by Machiavelli—are central to Machiavelli's founding of the revolution in philosophy, science, and politics that we call modernity. In this Conversation—our 200th episode!—our first and most frequent guest Harvey Mansfield returns to the program to discuss his recent work on Machiavelli, and presents an incisive and provocative account of some of the more challenging and too-little-understood aspects of Machiavelli's teaching. In particular, Mansfield draws out the world-historical significance of Machiavelli's discovery or invention of the effectual truth and shows why Machiavelli can justly be called the founder of modernity. This Conversation has also been added to the Harvey Mansfield site on Contemporary Thinkers and the Machiavelli site on Great Thinkers.
"In Plato's eyes, love is in essence a kind of education: you couldn't really love someone if you didn't want to be improved by them. Eudaimonia: "The peculiar but fascinating Greek word is a little hard to translate. It almost means 'happiness; but is really closer to 'fulfillment," because 'happiness' suggests continuous chirpiness- whereas 'fulfillment' is more compatible with periods of great pain and suffering- which seem to be an unavoidable part even of a good life." - Great Thinkers by The School of Life --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/shotofphilosophy/support
Cornel’s academic career is long and storied, having taught religion, philosophy, and African-American studies at Yale, Princeton, Harvard, and Union Theological Seminary, where he recently returned. He has written or contributed to more than 20 books, including "Race Matters" and "Democracy Matters" — but he recommends you start with Chekhov. I met Cornel decades ago, when I interviewed him at Union Theological Seminary for a TNR piece I was writing on divinity schools. He has long fascinated me, and "Race Matters" had a real impact on me decades ago. Erudite, passionate, and deeply humane, he is an unapologetically leftist Christian, who is also a champion of free speech, civility and the classics. In other words: a rare and beautiful man. Charlie sits down with professor of political philosophy at Hillsdale College, Dr. Khalil Habib, to explore the great thinkers who both inspired the Founding Fathers, but who also served as cautionary tales warning them of the many pitfalls that exist in forming a society and a government to run it. Diving into social contract theory, Charlie and Dr. Habib discuss Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Niccolò Machiavelli. Can these men trace their ideological DNA to ANTIFA, BLM, and other groups? Are they portrayed by history accurately, or was there much more nuance to their histories and philosophies than what is often taught? This amazing discussion serves as a crash course in Political Philosophy. Find out whey these men were either loved and embraced by America's Founding Fathers (and the men who inspired them), or why they were reviled. How should we grade American universities on their performance in educating young people? What role do universities play in American life today? How might we think about the opportunities for education beyond the traditional on-campus model? In this Conversation, the University of Virginia's Paul Cantor argues that universities often are failing in their most critical mission. There are, Cantor argues, a whole host of ideological, economic, and political factors that contribute to this decline, but he highlights a neglected one: bureaucratic centralization. According to Cantor, the efforts of universities to place administrators in charge of key decisions has weakened university departments—and taken authority from faculty members, who often have been a check on efforts to undermine liberal education. In light of the decline of elite institutions, particularly in the domain of liberal arts, Cantor and Kristol also consider how online technologies and non-university educational programs can further the goal of genuine liberal education, outside the institutional world of higher ed. One such encouraging example is Cantor's own Shakespeare and Politics website in the FCG's Great Thinkers series.

CrashCourse, an informative YouTube channel boasting 10 million subscribers ended up in our radar for their misguided claims (to put it subtly) about Christianity, arguments for God, ontology of God, logic of God etc. We understood that it was critical to respond to such gravely incorrect and preposterous allegations, especially given that it comes from such an influential channel. CrashCourse claims that we must hold only beliefs that are true. Is it so? Is there some sort of innate burden on us to follow the evidence where it leads? Are theists in violation of this principle? How did the man who pioneered atheism in the 20th century and equipped it with tooth and nail respond when new evidence surfaced that questioned his position? The Blind Mike and The Minifans crossover event with Dave Cullinane's Great Thinkers bombed last night in Woburn. Steve Robinson got a shitty over-priced haircut and now expecting to lose his tennis match against Kirk Minihane. Robert Redford and Robert DeNiro want you to know the hate Donald Trump. The Boston Globe put out a list of podcasts to enjoy this Thanksgiving, and surprise: The Kirk Minihane Show didn't make the list, but a bunch of shitty shows no one listens to did. Hunter Biden is suspected to have smoked crack in the VIP room of a strip club in DC. Minihane has a new live show idea to raise money for a charitable cause. Robinson's lunch yesterday with Minihane and his brother Adam prompts a tense and emotional discussion of Blind Mike's future.
MHB has abruptly resigned and we're left questioning what the future holds for one of our generation's great poets. Dave Cullinane has a choice to make following Kirk's nasty phone call with Gerry Callahan. But first: Great Thinkers is live tonight from some golf place in Woburn. The greatest movies of the decade lists are coming out, and Kirk's got some disagreements with the "critics." Papa John and Bill Cosby both give awkward interviews as part of their comeback strategies. A journalist is suspended from Twitter for a tweet about transgender crime statistics.

G.L.S. Shackle FBA spent his career advocating the importance of understanding uncertainty in economics, but his ideas fell out of fashion towards the end of the 20th century. Today's guest is Peter Boettke of George Mason University and we're discussing his recent book in the Great Thinkers in Economics series: F. A. Hayek: Economics, Political Economy and Social Philosophy. This book explores the life and work of Austrian-British economist, political economist, and social philosopher, Friedrich Hayek. Set within a context of the recent financial crisis, alongside the renewed interest in Hayek and the Hayek-Keynes debate, the book introduces the main themes of Hayek’s thought. These include the division of knowledge, the importance of rules, the problems with planning and economic management, and the role of constitutional constraints in enabling the emergence of unplanned order in the market by limiting the perverse incentives and distortions in information often associated with political discretion. Key to understanding Hayek's development as a thinker is his emphasis on the knowledge problem that economic decision makers face and how alternative institutional arrangements either hinder or assist them in overcoming that epistemic dilemma. Hayek saw order emerging from individual action and responsibility under the appropriate institutional order that itself emerges from actors discovering new and better ways to coordinate their behavior. This book will be of interest to all those keen to gain a deeper understanding of this great 20th century thinker in economics. Note for those interested in buying the book: IF you are at a university and your university library has the Springer subscription (which most do), you can order a print-on-demand version---MyCopy---for $25, so that makes it somewhat more reasonable than the library prices. You can also get a discount flyer here.

French intellectual Jacques Derrida (1930–2004) was one of the most important contributors to the post-modern philosophical movement. He was also one of the most notoriously difficult philosophers to understand. In this third episode of a three-part series, Dr. Christopher Watkin helps us understand Derrida’s theology. Dr. Watkin is senior lecturer in French Studies at Monash University, Australia. Dr. Watkin received his MPhil and PhD from Cambridge.
