Writer Geoff Dyer joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss his new memoir Homework, which covers Dyer's working-class youth in England during the 1960s and '70s. He recollects his early passion for reading and film and reflects on writing about his parents, as well as the intensity of childhood play and collecting in the wake of the Second World War. He also explains what it meant for him to pass the 11-plus exam, a test given to British 11-year-olds to determine if they could go to grammar school—and the peculiar role that grammar schools played in the British educational system. Dyer talks about how this opportunity made his eventual admission at Oxford possible. He reads from Homework. This podcast is produced by V.V. Happy Pride Month, listeners. In honor of the quiltwork of beliefs, creeds, and queerness, we created a new logo for the cast. Enjoy! Do you take what is offered? This is the question that the Four of Cups reminds us of. It reminds us to be discerning and establish boundaries. Melissa, Hilary, and Jaymi examine life, the universe, and menopause through the lens of this card. In the Smith Waite deck, this card's vibe is a total meh. Seeing the figure with their arms crossed is a boundary — a passive form of activism against the norm. Sometimes, it's better to stand still and hold your ground. Episode 152: The Journey to Becoming a Homeopath with Alexandra Ross

Homeopathy247 Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2025 36:03

In this heartwarming and insightful episode of the Homeopathy 247 podcast, host Mary Greensmith welcomes Alexandra Ross, a homeopathy student living in rural West Cork, Ireland. Alexandra shares her personal journey into the world of homeopathy, starting with her experiences on her organic dairy farm and how her curiosity about animal health led her to a transformative path of study. From Cows to Clinics: Alexandra's Introduction to Homeopathy Alexandra's journey into homeopathy began not with people—but with cows. Living on a farm with her husband, she encountered situations where conventional veterinary approaches weren't effective. Through research and recommendations, she stumbled upon homeopathy for livestock and enrolled in a course in Germany. Her skepticism vanished the moment a cow in distress delivered a calf “like a bullet” after being given the remedy Caulophyllum. Encouraged by this experience and supported by a homeopathic vet, Alexandra's interest deepened. When her trusted vet retired, she realized she needed to learn more—not just for the animals but also for her family. Choosing the Path of Study Alexandra signed up for a home prescriber course at the Irish School of Homeopathy, which quickly turned into a full four-year commitment. What started as a practical step for supporting her children's health became a deeply transformative life experience. She describes the decision to study homeopathy as both a financial and emotional investment. Travelling to Dublin for in-person classes required planning and expense, but Alexandra values the energy and connection of being physically present with classmates and teachers. A Breakdown of the Four-Year Course Year 1: Students dive into the foundational remedies (polycrests) and philosophy. The Organon by Hahnemann serves as a guiding text. Assignments vary from essays to creative projects like drawings and poems. Year 2: Focus shifts to chronic care and miasms (inherited patterns of illness). Students begin working on real case studies and learn to analyze and prescribe based on deeper themes. Year 3: Students begin their supervised clinical work—seeing real clients while being guided by experienced mentors. Homework now comes from actual case documentation and consultation. Year 4: A continuation of the clinical journey with more responsibility and deeper integration of previous learning. Students participate in school-run clinics and are supported through one-on-one supervision. The Inner Transformation Beyond textbooks and remedies, Alexandra emphasizes how studying homeopathy changes your inner world. Emotional shifts, personal healing, and unexpected breakthroughs are common. Grief she had long suppressed surfaced during her studies, and through support from the school and her own homeopath, she began to truly heal. Alexandra says the friendships formed during the course are powerful and lasting—because everyone is growing, learning, and supporting each other in a shared journey. Advice for Those Considering the Course Her biggest advice? “If you're even a little bit interested, just try the first year.” Many students only take the foundation year and still walk away with a life-changing understanding of health and healing—even if they don't pursue a full license. Today I'm breaking down one of the most important concepts in brain development – executive function. Ever wondered what executive function actually means? I'll take you on a quick journey through your brain, from the visual cortex in the back to the frontal lobe up front. This is where the magic happens – where your brain develops the ability to make good decisions, plan for the future, regulate emotions, and "read the room." I explain how executive function is a process that builds over time, starting from the back of your brain and working forward. When everything flows smoothly, you develop into a powerful young person who can execute tasks, turn in homework, and make solid life plans. Don't miss our upcoming parental webinars starting May 14th! I'll teach you how to understand your child's unique "blueprint" and help their brain develop with the right intensity and frequency. Ready to spark some serious joy in your brain? Today, we're diving into the exhilarating world of lifelong learning! I'm Heather Masters, and let me tell you, I'm a bit of a learning junkie—like, if learning were a sport, I'd be getting gold medals! We're chatting about how discovering new things can turn that frown upside down and crank up your happiness meter. We'll explore how to pick topics that light you up, using some fun questions that'll guide you like a treasure map to your own learning adventure. Plus, I'll throw in some classic blunders to dodge while you're on your journey, because who doesn't love a good ol' learning misstep story? So grab your cosy drink, settle in, and let's get curious together! The Details:Have you ever felt that magical spark when you learn something new? That's the vibe Heather Masters captures in this episode of the Choosing Happy Podcast! We're all about the joy of lifelong learning, and Heather spills the beans on how it can truly transform our lives. She dives into the science behind learning and happiness, revealing how keeping our brains active can lead to a more fulfilling life. It's like giving your spirit a workout! And let's be honest, who doesn't want to feel that rush of excitement when mastering a new skill? Whether it's photography, coding, or even the art of making the perfect cup of coffee, learning keeps our lives vibrant! But wait, there's more! Heather shares her own learning journey, and trust me, it's as inspiring as it gets. She talks about her obsession with tech and how she's currently exploring the fascinating world of AI. It's contagious, really! And if you're wondering how to find what you should learn next, she's got a nifty set of questions to guide you on your quest for knowledge. From what excites you to where you can learn it, these questions are your compass on the adventure of lifelong learning.Oh, and let's not forget the five mistakes to avoid when diving into new learning topics! Heather breaks it down with her signature charm, reminding us to follow our passions, set realistic goals, and always have a plan. It's all about making learning a joyful experience rather than a chore. So let's embrace the challenge, keep our hearts open, and embark on this incredible learning journey together. Because let's face it, life's too short to stop learning!Takeaways: Lifelong learning is like a happiness spark for your brain, keeping it sharp and your heart full. Choosing a learning topic should ignite your passion, not just follow trends that bore you to tears. Ask yourself six key questions to discover what you truly want to learn and why it matters to you. Avoid common mistakes like setting unrealistic goals or diving into learning without a solid plan. Learning is a journey, not a race—embrace the process and remember, there's no failing, only feedback. Pick something that excites you and commit to it, because that's where the real joy lies. If so, then this episode of The Dad Edge is definitely for you. I'm revisiting one of our most popular Q&A sessions because it's packed with the kind of crowdsourced wisdom that can really help us crack the code on kid motivation. This Q&A was originally recorded a couple of years back, but the principles we shared then are still incredibly relevant today. I wanted to bring this one back because I'm getting ready to launch my fifth book, Pursuit of Legendary Fatherhood. It's been a journey getting this book out, and some of the core ideas I've been exploring were definitely in the air during this original Q&A. And hey, if your marriage could use a boost too, check out: www.thedadedge.com/extraordinary-marriage In this deep dive into real-life parenting strategies, you and I, along with the guys from The Dad Edge Alliance, explore: Creating Connection Through Ownership and Structure: Practical ways to foster responsibility in your kids. Modeling Responsibility and Emotional Intelligence: How your own actions speak volumes at home. Gamifying Contributions and Chores: Making tasks engaging and less of a battle. The Balance Between Incentives and Expectations: Finding the right approach to motivation. Proactive Communication and Family Agreements: Eliminating power struggles before they begin. Later in the session, the conversation shifts to the bedrock of the family: Emotional Connection and Marriage: The vital role of intentional communication. Small Shifts, Big Impact: How subtle changes in posture can build psychological safety in your most important relationships. While some specific examples regarding children's ages or routines might be from the past, the core principles and actionable takeaways shared in this Q&A remain incredibly valuable for fathers navigating the daily challenges of raising motivated and responsible kids, and building a strong family foundation. This special "WINSday" edition is all about celebrating our members' successes and sharing the valuable lessons they've learned on their journey to becoming better dads.
