In this episode, Lisa and Jyoti discuss:Strategies for applying to Computer Science Majors and related STEM majors.STEM majors that are alternatives to computer science that may be a better fit for your teen. The importance of demonstrating intellectual curiosity, problem-solving skills, and community impact in college applications. The differences between Mathophile, Discoveror, Innovator, and Implementor in their careerKey Takeaways: Most students who say they want to major in computer science do not understand what the major actually entails. For STEM fields, admissions officers are looking for intellectual curiosity and problem-solving skills. Passion projects can help your student to demonstrate this during their admissions process. When applying to Computer Science, those students who are looking at CS in interdisciplinary ways, such as within the fields of finance or health care, stand out from other applicants. The engineering technology curriculum has a hands-on component, and the math level is lower than that of an engineering curriculum. “For STEM fields - engineering fields, computer science - the admissions officers looking for that intellectual curiosity and those problem-solving skills. I would say a student needs to really start exploring early on and look for those interdisciplinary research projects are based on their interests.” – Jyoti JainAbout Jyoti Jain: Jyoti has a Master's in Chemistry from Baylor University and an MBA in Hospitality and Marketing from Golden Gate University. The Kolbe A™ Index is the only assessment that measures how you naturally take action. Of course, once you've taken the Index, there are several actions you can take to better understand and build on your conative strengths. First of all, you'll want to have an appreciation of what your result means. So, in this episode of the Powered by Instinct podcast, our host Amy Bruske walks us through the four Action Modes®: Fact Finder, Follow Thru, Quick Start, and Implementor. She explains Kolbe numbers in detail and shares tips to help you better understand your results, and how you can use them going forward. Key Insights ⚡ All Kolbe A results are positive and equal. It's important to understand that there are no right or wrong Kolbe results. Amy explains, "All results are positive. So, there are no good or bad or right or wrong Kolbe results. All of the results are absolutely positive and equal. So, one person might have an eight in one of Kolbe' Action Modes and another person a two — those are equally positive. So, people have the same amount of mental energy or striving energy to get things done — you are equal to anybody else in your ability to execute." ⚡ Kolbe A is unchanging. Our surroundings or genetics don't determine our instincts. And the same goes for our Kolbe A results. Amy says, "The good part about that is you can know what to count on in yourself and other people. The bad part about that is if you're trying to change your significant other, you can stop now because that is not going to work. There are some things about how people take action that are natural and are not going to change over time." ⚡ There are four Kolbe Action Modes. Kolbe's four Action Modes show how you take action and approach problems. Amy says, "Fact Finder is how you gather and share information. Follow Thru is how you organize or design things. Quick Start is how you deal with risk and uncertainty, and Implementor is how you handle space and tangibles." Episode Highlights The Fact Finder mode is how you handle information "Fact Finder is how you gather and share information. We all give information; we all receive information. How you do that falls on this continuum from someone who is going to be very specific in that seven through ten range up to someone in the one through three range who is going to simplify." The Follow Thru mode is how you organize and design "Think of this as a continuum from someone who is systematic on the seven through ten range up to someone in the one to three range who is more adaptable. Now, those of you who fall in the seven through ten range in Follow Thru, you do your best problem-solving when you design a plan first, when you absolutely have a system in place for how things get done, and you're the one who naturally gets pleasure out of crossing something off your list." The Quick Start mode is how you handle risk and uncertainty "Think of it as a continuum from someone who is naturally going to jump in and innovate solutions up to someone who's going to stabilize. And those of you that fall in the seven through ten range, you do your best problem-solving when you can experiment. You jump in, and you try things out." The Implementor mode is how you handle space and tangibles "Think of it as this continuum from someone who is going to naturally build a solution or demonstrate something in three dimensions up to someone who's going to envision or imagine a solution."

This week on the leadership podcast, Bradley sits down with return guest Craig Wiggins. They discussed changes in business operations, marketing, and hiring in a post pandemic landscape. Craig shared his thoughts around what changed in business since the last time he was on the podcast. Craig Wiggins started his insurance agency in 1996 with 0 customers and 0 clients… Today he has built one of the largest agencies in the country with 4 locations in 2 states and over $40,000,000 in annual premium. Craig and his Agency consistently win top awards and recognitions year after year. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2020. In this episode, he spoke directly to insurance agencies. He encouraged owners to remember that coverage is more important than price. After all, anyone can undercut a price, but not everyone can provide coverage that will serve their customers. In fact, he noted that if an insurance agent doesn't do a good job, they may set their customer up for major problems down the road. Craig also encouraged owners to remind their team members of this fact. An insurance agent is the #2 most important person in someone's life. You need to remind your team that what they do matters! He has found that when marketing your business, traditional methods have become more effective. This means that centers of influence, referrals aka introductions, and even direct mail have been offering some great returns. This is in direct contrast to standard practices over the past few years that have emphasized online reach. Craig talked about how to find truly great team members. A lot of people will lull into thinking that it's easy to just post a job opening and get a bunch of applicants. However, the kind of people you're looking for may not be on Indeed or Monster. Have a high number of applicants doesn't always mean they are qualified. He and Bradley discussed the value of having a second in command. This person would be responsible for operations and implementation of the vision. Craig used the term Implementor to describe this person. Their conversation included the importance of knowing when it was time to hire for this role, and what compensation should look like. Ready to learn how to succeed in a post-pandemic business world? Are you an implementer or an owner? According to Kate Johnson, president of Microsoft U.S., an implementer is somebody who takes somebody else's vision and actions and implements it. Implementers typically give the accountability and responsibility to somebody else. An owner is somebody who sets the vision and course of action. They provide clarity on the outcome and how a team or organization can achieve that outcome. Owners also take on the accountability and their responsibility without passing it off to someone else. If you want to become an owner at your organization, you need to be more accountable for driving change. Volunteer for the tough projects that nobody else wants to take on. Be more humble and vulnerable when it comes to making mistakes and learning from them. And think of where you can create value inside of your organization and as a part of your team. Implementers keep the ship running. But owners change the world. We need both, which one are you? --------------------------- This episode is sponsored by Workplace from Meta. In today's episode, I conclude my 8 step "Organizing the Chaos Process." Click here if you want to check out the previous episodes where I covered steps 1-7. Setting up a regular meeting structure is the last thing I do when consulting with a client. Meetings seem to have a bad rap and as such, I've found that a surprising number of teams aren't having them consistently or even at all.
In step #7 of my process, I talk about how I help small business owners realize the difference between working on your business vs just working in your business. If the "in" work is keeping you from the "on" work - this episode is for you. Learn about what an "Integrator" is and how they can save you from the day to day operations of your business.
In this episode, I cover how your team can effectively document the processes your business needs to ensure that things run smoothly and consistently.
Kathy continues with her gift buying tips based on the recipient’s natural creative process (M.O.), beginning with those who have no mode where they initiate action – the facilitators. She gives warnings about gifts to avoid for those with resistance in a mode and finishes by explaining how your method of shopping is a demonstration of your conative talents. 00:00 Intro 00:56 Gifts for Facilitators 02:43 Gifts to avoid for those with resistance in Fact Finder 03:35 Gifts to avoid for those with resistance in Follow Thru 04:30 Gifts to avoid for those with resistance in Quick Start 05:34 Gifts to avoid for those with resistance in Implementor 07:26 Shopping by M.O. 017:26 Safe Gifts 20:40 End
Now that we've gotten clear on what you want from you business, what you need to delegate, and then subsequently delegated those things, it's time to share what you've found with your team. In this episode, I teach how you can roll out these changes to your team. Getting their feedback and input is 100% required if you want to be successful moving forward.
This week, I'm picking back up on explaining my 8-step "Organizing Chaos Process". Step 3 is where the rubber starts to meet the road. During this step, we begin to delegate the activities you'd put on your "Stop Doing" list that we created during Step 2. We create "Position Agreements" which are similar to job descriptions. These are the "hats" people will be wearing - and if you're like most small businesses, you'll have people wearing multiple hats. These agreements are how you hand off those items on your "Stop Doing" list to various members of your team.
In today's interview, I sit down to talk with Chris Weninegar. Chris is a classic visionary - a series of jobs that just didn't seem to take, an idea, and taking massive action to make that idea a reality. In this episode, you'll learn about how Muletown Roasted Coffee came to be, how it inspired a community to rediscover its heritage, and how a business owner can create a business without staying its employee forever.
I'm a huge Simon Sinek fan and the concept he preaches about, which is finding your "Why." No one cares about what you do; they care about why you do it. Tyler Steigelman is the owner and operator of WorthWhile Brands - a custom clothing brand with a message. I love the positive message of Tyler's brand and I want to see everywhere. His story is inspiring and I highly recommend you check out this interview and find a way to make your business' message worthwhile.
Every small business has a unique story. Today, I got to hear Pete Provost of Briarworks tell his. There is an amazing theme I've been uncovering as I interview small businesses about their stories: authenticity is the biggest advantage a small business can leverage. Get inspired by today's interview and work towards becoming your authentic self.
In the last step of my Organizing Chaos process, we talked about getting clear on what you want out of life and where your business should be taking you. During step 2, we'll figure out how to spend your time in order to get there. In this next step, we figure out what all needs done in your business. We then lay out everything that needs done and determine who should be responsible for it. (Your time is valuable and the only way to grow your business in a way that allows you to retain your sanity, is to understand exactly where you should be spending that time.)
Over the last several years, I've developed an 8 step process that allows me to step into any business and instantly understand why the business isn't working like it should. Check out Step 1 of my process, which I just released today - and stay tuned for the rest!
In this episode, I interview Nick Ercolano who taught me that anyone can monetize their passion. You'll not only learn about how he did that, but you'll get some great tips on developing yourself as an entrepreneur, learning how to deal with competition, and getting insight into how you can create an exceptional experience that your customers will pay for over, and over, and over.
Many times when a business is started or a new product/service is being developed, we feel like everything must be perfect and complete before we release it to the world. speak with Joshua Merrill of Legacy Coffee Company who started his beloved Spring Hill, TN coffee company even after a failed Kickstarter campaign and numerous other setbacks. Check out Joshua's interview packed full of inspiration, hope, and raw entrepreneurial spirit.

If you really want some insight into the minds of your team members and are looking for 3 impactful things you can do to keep them around, check out this episode.
In this episode, I speak with Ryan Estabrooks - media guru, film director, and screen writer. If you're a solopreneur - don't miss this episode about developing your brand, trusting your gut, and understanding the power of the "Minimum Viable Product."
Pretending to be something you're not will only get you so far. On the other hand, you can be 100% your true self, but struggle with communication when it comes to people who are different from you. In this week's episode, I speak with former Dave Ramsey employee, Marcus Meazzo of Meazzo Design about what it means to have an authentic brand, why being yourself is so crucial to success, and the struggles of building a business that is genuine and lasting.
In this episode, I interview media wizard Ross Jaynes of Jaynes Media. Ross has been working with businesses small and large to help them tell their story better.
How does one build a business built on the passion of wanting to act and direct? Where would you start with such a venture? And how do you build a business around a team of people who are freelancers?
In this episode I share the process I use to mange my time. Every Monday I have sacred time carved out to plan my week. With all the different activities I'm engaged in, it's crucial that I do this. Do you have any tips or tricks for time management that you couldn't live without? I'd love to know.

Today's interview is with Amanda Kelton who is running for Maury County Mayor this election cycle. In this interview, Amanda shares how she leads a small team, how to challenge the status quo, and what servant-leadership is all about.
In this episode, I interview the General Manager and Head Brewer of Asgard Brewing Co. in Columbia, TN. We discuss how this small brewing company came to be, where it's headed and the pros and cons of the small team dynamic.
Despite having hired many employees during my time as a manager, I'd never hired an employee for my own business - until now. In this episode I share the fears that crept up and how I dealt with them in my efforts to delegate and elevate.
