Ep. 431: Mater The Mental Game | Joel Turner | Shot IQ

Truth From The Stand Deer Hunting Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2025 78:12

On this episode of Truth From The Stand, I sit down with Joel Turner, a guy who knows more about the mental side of archery than just about anyone. We're not just talking about shooting—we're talking about the mind game behind every release, every draw, and every moment of high-stakes hunting. Joel breaks down the difference between thoughts and thinking, why what you say to yourself before a shot matters, and how to control adrenaline when everything is on the line. We get into the transition to traditional archery, why shot control is everything, and the blueprint for building a rock-solid shooting process. If you've ever struggled with target panic, blown a shot at the worst possible time, or just want to be more deliberate and lethal with a bow in your hands, this episode is for you. Joel's approach to mental performance and archery mastery will change how you think about shooting—and maybe even how you think about hunting altogether. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PODCAST 431 Your mind matters more than your muscles—mental control separates great shooters from average ones. Talk yourself through the shot—what you say in the moment can make or break execution. Breathe, aim, execute—controlling adrenaline starts with your breath, not your bow. You have more time than you think—rushing leads to mistakes, trust the process. Confidence is built, not given—a repeatable shot sequence is the foundation of accuracy. Flinching isn't failure, it's feedback—learn from your mistakes, don't ignore them. Traditional archery exposes weakness—but mastering it makes you a deadlier hunter. The word “tactile” refers to the sense of touch, and tactile dysfunction (also known as tactile sensitivity) is a form of sensory dysfunction that causes that sense to be heightened to discomfort or even pain. Children with tactile dysfunction feel certain sensations more strongly than most people do. What might be a minor annoyance to one person can be extremely uncomfortable for someone with tactile sensitivity.Kids with tactile sensitivity might show the following signs:· Complaining about clothing or shoes, even though they seem to fit fine and are made of fabrics that are usually comfortable· Objecting to having their hair cut or combed, or having their teeth brushed· Dislikes getting dirty, dislikes activities such as finger painting or playing with “squishy” art supplies such as modeling dough or clay· Appearing to be “picky eaters” because certain food textures are hard to tolerate· Flinching or turning away when the wind blows against their face· Complaining about mild changes in temperature: feeling too hot or too cold when the air is temperate. It's important to note that children who have tactile dysfunction aren't just being demanding or picky.Therapy for hypersensitive to touch:· Set up a texture board with different texture pieces.· Use slime, shaving form for liquid exposure· Use deep pressure technique and a handheld massager for giving a gentle massage.· Rub body brush on feet or artificial grass mat for walking purposes.· Use the tight tuck technique with a sheet or blanket for compression.· Hug the kid every now and then, gradually increasing the time.#breakingthebias #singleparent #singledad #happilysingledad #autism #autistic #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #autismpride #asd #pride #loveislove #autismawareness #autismacceptance #forabettertomorrow #sensory #tactile #spd

Distractions 101It's human nature to be easily distracted. In fact, distractions aren't necessarily all that bad.It reminds me of this dumb game that my kids play. They pretend to punch each other in the face, and if the other child flinches, the first child says, "two for flinching" and slugs them in the shoulder twice.Flinching isn't bad. It's a protective reflex.Being distracted isn't bad, it's part of our human nature to always be on the lookout. To always be looking for the next amazing thing. The problem is when our distractions run our lives. The problem is when our distractions put us in a hyper-reactionary mode. The problem is that our distractions aren't likely to create the dreams of our lives. It's Not Just Your Teen! One of the things that I'm noticing with a lot of parents is they they are worried about how distracted their teens have become.Parents tell me things like:"They're always looking at their phones or social media.""They only think about their friends."or"They don't even notice what's going on in the real world."Now, let me share with you what teens are telling me about their parents:"They're always looking at their phones or social media.""They only think about their work."or"They don't even now what it's going on in the real world."Are You Driven By DistractedEverything and everyone seems to be fighting for a little slice of our attention.Everything is trying to be the loudest, brightest, most shocking thing, just to get our attention. What is distracting you?For me it's things like the Will Smith Slap or the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial. Sometimes it's my kids grades or games on my phone. What are you being distracted from?Often I'm distracted from uncomfortable emotions or things that I don't want to do.How is distraction benefitting you?It might be relaxing. It might be easier than doing something hard. What is distraction costing you?Sometimes it costs me relationships, my dreams, and my future.Distraction Leads to ReactionI Googled the opposite of distraction and this is what I found. The Opposite of Distraction is Traction. Traction is an action that moves us towards what we really want.If we dig into this we see that "traction" is an intentional action or (DOing).Distraction is keeping you from being intentional. Distraction leads to reaction. Let go of distractions so you can be more intentional. Your Distractions Program you and Define Your RealityAdvertisement, media, television and social media are all distractions. These distractions are trying to program us to purchase their products. Identify What distractions are keeping you from your desired results?Distractions can keep you from having the relationship that you want. Distractions will keep you from BEing who you want to be.Distractions will keep you from connecting with your family. Distractions will keep you from growing. Come Connect with Us LIVE and In Person! Our Summer Slam is Saturday, July 29th from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.It will include powerful lessons, fun activities, and an awesome evening filled with board games and connection.See you there!https://firmlyfounded.com/event

Faith Bible Church Sermons

Bad experiences often cause us to flinch. Flinching of course is when we pull back, shy away, waiver, hesitate, falter in the face of what we anticipate might happen. It's common to flinch when we start a difficult but necessary conversation, when we agree to take on responsibility that we know will be challenging. It's not unusual to flinch any time we anticipate negative repercussions that might result from whatever it is we're about to do. And flinching has real application in the face of trials. Flinching effects our attitude toward trials, and at this point in the book of James we know that's a huge problem. Flinching makes us less likely to endure. It makes us more likely to avoid challenges and walk away. Flinching makes it hard to take action, even on the things we know to be true. At the core flinching is a faith problem. We're not sure we trust what's about to happen. We're not sure who we can trust, if it's worth the risk to trust, when it's safe to trust, why we should trust, what can we trust?

Yello there. And we're back from our Christmas/New Year's break. Happy new year to you and yours. We hope this is a horser of a year for us all and the world at large. O'Neill starts the show talking about why we are recording via Zoom and talks about his recent trip to the great state of Tennessee. Did Paula Deen's restaurant live up to the hype? Listen and find out what the random woman he met thought about Paula Deenie's weenie's (hot dogs!). Danish talks about some interesting fashion he saw on a recent trip. This leads us down a path talking about authentic cowboys vs. people who just dress like cowboys because they're trying to be cool or get the rub off the real 'boys and 'girls out there. O'Neill details the sweet offer John Little recently gave him, and Danish talks about why John used to be called "the candy cane assassin". A recent DISTURBING video featuring Ari Shaffir and two dogs is discussed. If you seek out this video, viewer discretion is advised and keep in mind, NSFW or really anywhere. After that, we talk about someone who used to spend a lot of time at the Comedy Store, "the Great One". We talk about his unique fashion and how he left to become a trucker. There's some brief Cobra Kai discussion, and Danish shares an article he found detailing Marty Cove, the actor who plays Sensei John Kreese's, real life problems from playing the Kreese. Danish talks about a recent encounter he had with Brian Holtzman. There's a brief Holtzman update and talk of how he could be the greatest Craigslist success story of all time. There's also talk about why Holtzman is a fashion plate. There's some talk about Jake Paul saying he may already feel the effects of CTE. Then, we're off to England, where a woman, who used to be a man, has gotten into some trouble for various offenses (none of them are good!). One of them involves an Alsatian, aka, a German Shepherd. Wonder what Nate Diaz has been up to? Well, look no further, because we get into it. Hear how he made a "splash" at the Jake Paul fight. This is some real 209 Whole Foods shiz. We nitpick an article about an incident involving Chael Sonnen fighting some guy in a hotel. After that, it's off to Australia to discuss how one man foiled a 15 year old car thief. O'Neill relates to the tale and tells a story of something he experienced with well known dog lover, Ari Shaffir. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Flinching away from truth” is often about protecting the epistemology, published by AnnaSalamon on the LessWrong. Related to: Leave a line of retreat; Categorizing has consequences. There's a story I like, about this little kid who wants to be a writer. So she writes a story and shows it to her teacher. “You misspelt the word ‘ocean'”, says the teacher. “No I didn't!”, says the kid. The teacher looks a bit apologetic, but persists: “‘Ocean' is spelt with a ‘c' rather than an ‘sh'; this makes sense, because the ‘e' after the ‘c' changes its sound.” “No I didn't!” interrupts the kid. “Look,” says the teacher, “I get it that it hurts to notice mistakes. But that which can be destroyed by the truth should be! You did, in fact, misspell the word ‘ocean'.” “I did not!” says the kid, whereupon she bursts into tears, and runs away and hides in the closet, repeating again and again: “I did not misspell the word! I can too be a writer!”. I like to imagine the inside of the kid's head as containing a single bucket that houses three different variables that are initially all stuck together: Original state of the kid's head: The goal, if one is seeking actual true beliefs, is to separate out each of these variables into its own separate bucket, so that the “is ‘oshun' spelt correctly?” variable can update to the accurate state of "no", without simultaneously forcing the "Am I allowed to pursue my writing ambition?" variable to update to the inaccurate state of "no". Desirable state (requires somehow acquiring more buckets): The trouble is, the kid won't necessarily acquire enough buckets by trying to “grit her teeth and look at the painful thing”. A naive attempt to "just refrain from flinching away, and form true beliefs, however painful" risks introducing a more important error than her current spelling error: mistakenly believing she must stop working toward being a writer, since the bitter truth is that she spelled 'oshun' incorrectly. State the kid might accidentally land in, if she naively tries to "face the truth": (You might take a moment, right now, to name the cognitive ritual the kid in the story should do (if only she knew the ritual). Or to name what you think you'd do if you found yourself in the kid's situation -- and how you would notice that you were at risk of a "buckets error".) More examples: It seems to me that bucket errors are actually pretty common, and that many (most?) mental flinches are in some sense attempts to avoid bucket errors. The following examples are slightly-fictionalized composites of things I suspect happen a lot (except the "me" ones; those are just literally real): Diet: Adam is on a diet with the intent to lose weight. Betty starts to tell him about some studies suggesting that the diet he is on may cause health problems. Adam complains: “Don't tell me this! I need to stay motivated!” One interpretation, as diagramed above: Adam is at risk of accidentally equating the two variables, and accidentally assuming that the studies imply that the diet must stop being viscerally motivating. He semi-consciously perceives that this risks error, and so objects to having the information come in and potentially force the error. Pizza purchase: I was trying to save money. But I also wanted pizza. So I found myself tempted to buy the pizza really quickly so that I wouldn't be able to notice that it would cost money (and, thus, so I would be able to buy the pizza): On this narration: It wasn't necessarily a mistake to buy pizza today. Part of me correctly perceived this "not necessarily a mistake to buy pizza" state. Part of me also expected that the rest of me wouldn't perceive this, and that, if I started thinking it through, I might get locked into the no-pizza state even if pizza was better. So it tried to 'help' by buying the pizza really quickly, ...

Dr. Carroll is a health services investigator with an interest in improving pediatric outcomes. He has led multiple studies to improve adolescent diabetes through the use of information technology. First, he designed, developed, and studied the use of mobile technology to improve type 1 diabetes management in diabetes. Now, he is studying the use of clinical decision support to help primary care doctors better screen for, diagnose, and manage type 2 diabetes in adolescents. In addition, Dr. Carroll is the director of the Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Comparative Effectiveness Research, which establishes infrastructure to improve both comparative effectiveness and patient centered outcomes research at Indiana University. One of the initial projects compares the use of information technology and behavioral contracting to improve type 1 diabetes management in adolescents. Dr. Carroll is also engaged in a project to adapt the Diabetes Prevention Program for families, and a study is being conducted to test its efficacy against other programs in a number of settings. Dr. Carroll is the author of the new book “The Bad Food Bible: How and Why to Eat Sinfully,” which suggests that when it comes to “sinful” eats, people may be misled by nutritional claims based on little substantive research. From the bestselling author Kenneth C Davis of the Don’t Know Much About® books comes a dramatic account of the origins of democracy, the history of authoritarianism, and the reigns of five of history's deadliest dictators. What makes a country fall to a dictator? How do authoritarian leaders—strongmen—capable of killing millions acquire their power? How are they able to defeat the ideal of democracy? And what can we do to make sure it doesn’t happen again? By profiling five of the most notoriously ruthless dictators in history—Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, and Saddam Hussein—Kenneth C. Davis seeks to answer these questions, examining the forces in these strongmen’s personal lives and historical periods that shaped the leaders they’d become. Meticulously researched and complete with photographs, Strongman provides insight into the lives of five leaders who callously transformed the world and serves as an invaluable resource in an era when democracy itself seems in peril Kenneth C. Davis is the New York Times–bestselling author of America’s Hidden History and Don’t Know Much About® History, which gave rise to the Don’t Know Much About® series of books for adults and children. He is also the author of the critically acclaimed In the Shadow of Liberty, which was an ALA Notable Book and a finalist for the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction, as well as More Deadly Than War, which was named a Washington Post Best Children's Book of the Month. You've been dreaming about your boulder project, dream route, or road trip. You've trained smart and hard. Your psych is high. You're ready to crush! So, how can you best transition from gym to outdoor climbing, and what can you do to perform your best on weekends outdoors or on a long trip? In this episode, Eric presents a series of powerful tips that you can take to the send bank! He also provides awareness of the potential to self-sabotage, something that even the most experienced climber can succumb to. RUNDOWN 0:15 – Opening comments--I missed you! 2:58 - Introduction to this episode on climbing tips and strategies for optimal performance on weekend trips and on longer road trip 4:06 - A few brief comments about the challenging and, at times, tumultuous events of the past few months... 7:56 - Eric's philosophy about the power of climbing--it brings us together! 9:30 - Tips, topics, and techniques to help you reach your climbing goals this season...as a weekend warrior and on a longer road trip. 10:22 - How to properly taper your training in the days leading up to your outdoor climbing. "Tapering" ahead of a weekend trip is much different than doing a proper training taper ahead of a month-long road trip. Learn the details so that you get it right--a proper taper is hugely important for climbing your strongest! 14:10 - When you arrive at your destination crag...what's the best climbing approach on the first few days? Should you go straight to your project...or should you spend a few days adjusting and acclimating to the outdoor climbing location? 18:00 - On longer trips, most climbers experience a "peak" during the first 1 to 3 weeks of the trip...but they then experience a gradual decline in maximum strength and power with each additional week removed from your training. 19:15 - Why pro climbers often limit climbing trips to one month. 19:29 - Comments about Alex Megos sending Bibliographie, the world's second 5.15d/9c route. CONGRAT ALEX! 20:40 - How as a weekend warrior you can best schedule climbing trips and find the training-and-climbing "rhythm" that best serves you. Plan several months ahead on a paper calendar...this way you can better see the training blocks and travel dates. 22:06 - On a long trip, how many days in a row can you climb? How many days per week is it best to climb? Answer: It depends on many variables...which I'll describe. 23:53 - Learn why a significant number of climbers return from a road trip with a tweak or more significant injury. Learn how you can avoid "walking off the cliff" of sudden, debilitating injury. 26:26 - Specific tips for optimizing recovery and lowering injury risk while on a climbing trip. 28:28 - Learn how to wrap up a long road trip and transition back into training at home. Should you take a break from training for a few days or more? 32:50 - Post-trip, most climbers will need a 2- to 4-week training block to regain top-end finger strength and power. 33:40 - About self-sabotage...it's happened to me...and I'm sure to you as well at some point. Let's unpack a few common scenarios for self-sabotage. 34:24 - Self-Sabotage #1: "Flinching" on the first day working a near-limit project route. TRUST THE PROCESS! Don't give up too fast. 37:55 - However, don't over-reach too far...and get bogged down for many days (or weeks) on a single route. Don't allow your climbing trip to turn into a suffer-fest. Try to balance days of sending (sub-max routes) with days of projecting on near-limit routes. 40:00 - Self-Sabotage #2: Not doing an appropriate warm-up...and rushing to get on your project boulder or route too fast. You can NOT climb your best without a proper warm-up that turns on your nervous system, ignites your climbing-specific aerobic system, lubricates your tendons and joints, and readies your generalize aerobic/CV system. Learn how to do it right! 43:50 - Self-Sabotage #3: Not eating right. Consuming adequate protein and carbohydrates is essential to climbing your best, keeping energy levels ups, recovering optimally, and lowering injury risk. Learn how to keep your power-to-weight ratio up and accelerate recovery on a road trip. Read more about the protein needs of a hard-training strength/power athlete like you! 49:09 - Some meal suggestions and tips for breakfast, snacks, and dinner. What's a common breakfast food of many top climbers? Find out!  50:10 - How many calories do you likely need for bouldering and sport climbing...and on a sedentary rest day? (Big wall and mountain climbers have a much higher daily caloric need than climbers doing stop-and-go bouldering and sport climbing.) 52:06 - Eric's closing--and powerful--comments about setting big goals, pursuing them energetically, and stacking the odds in your favor. By this time, most of the gaps in the wall around Jerusalem have been filled in. But, just when the work seemed finished....the opposition tries a few last ditch efforts to stop the work....just as we have an enemy who continually tries to come against us in the church. The British left was epically owned last month in one of the crappiest election results in several generations. While the reaction to this defeat has been largely one of despair and feelings of rudderlessness, we make the case that this is just one in a long line of defeats we will inevitably suffer. Unless we gird ourselves for defeat with a dialectical pessimism, there's no way we will last long enough to make a real difference. Flinching is kind of a strange phenomenon.  It’s not something you consciously do. It’s an instinct. Your brain forces you to pull away from the thing that could cause you pain. A hot stove, a pointy needle, or a ball flying at your face… It doesn’t matter what it is, if your brain senses it as a threat that could hurt you, it will do its best to protect you. Now, here’s something most people don’t know. Physical pain and emotional pain… they’re processed in many of the same areas of the brain. And your brain tries to protect you from both! You’ve probably noticed the emotional flinch. You pull away from people when they say or do things that hurt your feelings, or make you feel bad. You create a safe, emotional buffer between you and them so that you can avoid getting hurt again. Sometimes you get hurt over and over by the same person. They may not be big hurts… But when you add up lots and lots of little emotional flinches caused by little hurts over a long period of time, you end up with a grand-canyon-sized chasm between you and the person inflicting the pain. Ever hear of roommate syndrome? Maybe you’ve heard people say, “We just grew apart.”? This is how that happens. The only way to prevent it is to constantly repair the damage you do to your partner. Especially the small things. When you accidentally step on someone's toes in a crowd, you don’t tell them to get over it. You simply say, “Ooops! I’m sorry!” Accidentally hurting your partner’s feelings is no different. Apologizing doesn’t mean saying you are malicious. It doesn’t mean you did anything on purpose. It doesn’t even mean you’re wrong!  Most of the time it’s about taking a little responsibility, and being willing to see things from their perspective. “I can see how my tone could have been hurtful.” “I totally get why you are upset that I didn’t come home on time.” “It makes sense why you’d be hurt by that comment, even though I definitely didn’t mean it to be hurtful. I’m sorry.” When you apologize to your partner for hurts that you cause them - whether intentional or unintentional - you are giving them the gift of emotional healing, and building trust and intimacy. If you’re feeling distant right now, maybe there are some things you need to apologize for. (Or things you need to forgive.) Try it out… see what a difference it makes.

REPEAT SHOW, SCAN 2153 -- Tonight's special guest is Carlotta Taylor-Franks from Clinton, Mississippi, a survivor of child abuse by her own family and in foster care. She was severely beaten by her father, and suffered mental, spiritual and physical abuse in the 26 foster homes she was transferred from because of abuse and neglect. Carlotta learned early on that if she didn't transform her mind, she would be consumed by the chaotic world around her. After searching for her purpose for years, she soon learned that her purpose was to share her story and inspire others who may be going through what she endured and overcame triumphantly. She receives her greatest fulfillment from walking someone through their healing process. In her debut book, 'No More Flinching', Carlotta outlines five key steps to overcoming adversity. Flinching was the reaction she had right before her father oftentimes punched her in the face. As a former homicide detective, child protection detective, and former federal officer, with over 15 years law enforcement experience, she knew she had to use her knowledge and wisdom to effect greater change in and around the community. As the founder of 'Somebody Step In', a non-profit for foster children, teens and young adults, she offers coaching and mentorship in education, life skills and more. Carlotta encourages people worldwide to know that their difficulties in life do not have to define their future. Realizing that nothing just happens, and that God uses even our suffering to be a blessing, Carlotta seeks to inspire others to press beyond their breaking point, even if she only touches one person.
