Stopping to smell the concrete, an injection of inspiration fuel into the tank, and creating different stews. Kelly Finnigan (Monophonics, Kelly Finnigan) Kelly Finnigan “A Lover Was Born” Vinyl- https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/kelly-finnigan-a-lover-was-born "Distance as a measure of time and place informs Kelly Finnigan's, A Lover Was Born with a grit and grace that turns passion into virtue. The latest solo release from The Monophonics frontman roots itself in the best traditions of midwest soul labels like King, Curtom, Dakar, and the Bodie Recording Company. A Lover Was Born is a testimony that these deep cut grooves are not resigned to nostalgia, instead, they are at the burning heart of longing and hope. The journey Finnigan takes listeners on over Lover's eleven tracks echo the state of motion and growth since his solo debut, The Tales People Tell (2019). These two records bookend a prolific period of output, including a pair of Monophonics albums, a Christmas album, a mixtape, and a full slate of producing and engineering (The Ironsides, Alanna Royale, the Sextones). “There's nothing like making records,” says Finnigan. “It feels like that's my purpose — the reason I was put on this earth.” Written in California, Ohio, and Staten Island, Kelly Finnigan collaborated with old friends in and outside the studio. “I enjoy working alone but it's not how you want to make a record…almost everybody I brought in for this album I've worked with, toured with or spent a great deal of time with.” Max and Joe Ramey (The Ironsides), Jimmy James (Parlor Greens), Sergio Rios (Orgone), Joey Crispiano (Dap Kings) and Jay Mumford (aka J-Zone) all contribute to the overall sound of A Lover Was Born. Dramatic influences like Isaac Hayes (check out the piano on “Be Your Own Shelter”) and Jerry Ragovoy are chopped and folded into Northern Soul uptempo numbers to create stompers like “Get a Hold of Yourself” or “Chosen Few”. Finnigan's take on Deep Soul is captured brilliantly on “Walk Away from Me” and “Love (Your Pain Goes Deep)”, while Boom Bap pervades on hard hitters “His Love Ain't Real” & “Cold World”. Slower songs such as “Let Me Count the Reasons”, the emotional “All That's Left”, and the soul-stirring album closer “Count Me Out” show the honest and tender side that has become Finnigan's calling card. All the while, the voice is raw and earthy — in the best tradition of R&B shouters like Otis Redding, Lee Moses, and David Ruffin. The songs on A Lover Was Born reconfigure the spliced and sampled DNA of hip hop (extracted by crate diggers like Dilla and RZA) to create something new, underscoring both the spectrum and depth of soul while making a case to the timelessness of Finnigan's sound." TODAY I SPEAK WITH A BAND THAT ROCKED FOR DECADES BRINGING THE INDUSTRIAL GENRE TO ITS KNEES WITH THERE PERSONAL STYLE OF DARK TONES WITH THAT INDUSTRIAL FEEL THAT YOU WOULD HEAR IN BANDS LIKE CIRCLE OF DUST, MY LIFE WITH THE TRILL KILL KULT AND SO MANY OTHERS. I INTRO YOU TO KLANK!      Klank Band Bio Splicing the mosh pit and the dance floor, this wrecking machine originally from New York known as KLANK released their debut album “Still Suffering” on the Seattle-based Tooth & Nail Records in 1996. Breaking musical boundaries with a sound described as ‘dancy, aggressive, electronically infused groove', KLANK spent 18 weeks on the CMJ Top 40 charts and their monster single “Downside” which was added to over 170 radio stations nationwide. KLANK gained an immense amount of attention and notoriety while forming a strong, loyal fan base with their constant touring and growing reputation for intense live shows. KLANK then made their mark once again with their sophomore release “Numb” which included the crushing single “Blind” which again made it into the top 40 on the CMJ charts. A video was also filmed for “Blind” which become a regular fixture on the Much Music channel. Following Numb, KLANK appeared on several compilations which included their version of “I'll Wait” to the “Running with the Devil - a Tribute to Van Halen ” release. KLANK consists of Daren “Klank” Diolosa (Circle Of Dust) on vocals, guitars, Pat Servedio on guitar, keys, programming and production, and Eric Wilkins on drums. When asked to summarize KLANK's music and lyrical direction, Diolosa has explained that, “Writing music is a form of therapy that helps to release bottled up frustrations and emotions that otherwise have no outlet… We write music that we feel comes from deep down inside and a lot of people can relate because it's based on real life situations and emotions from living our everyday life… From mood swings, bitterness, the longing for inner peace to elements of hope, happiness & even despair. We all have to deal with these in our lives and this is our way to vent those issues… We call it ‘sonic therapy'.” After the release of NUMB, Diolosa contributed vocals to the song “Silhouette Of Rage” found on Argyle Park's “Suspension of Disbelief” release. In 2007 the band released the “In Memory Of…” EP which featured the trademark KLANK sound of layers of guitars, keyboards, samples, thumping bass, live and programmed drums fused with melodic, deep heartfelt introspective lyrics. “In Memory Of…” containes the song “EXPN2Day”, which the band had written, by request of ESPN specifically for their extreme sports and music show called “EXPN2Day” On April 20, 2010 KLANK unleashed their “NUMB…Reborn” release which contains 15 tracks of the classic KLANK sound. Songs like Don't Count Me Out, Blind, D.F.L. and The Rules tip the scales of heaviness, while songs like Broken, God? and So Very Real lets the bands melodic side shine through in full form. KLANK's last offering titled “URBAN WARFARE” was released on June 12, 2012 and is being hailed not only as the bands best but also their strongest release to date. Complete with a guest appearance by Dug Pinnick from KING's X, this new cd really packs a punch. Urban Warfare contains 14 blistering brand new tracks and was mastered by renowned audio wizard Maor Appelbaum in Los Angeles, CA. “We wanted to put out a CD that fully captures the live essence and intensity of what KLANK is live and we couldn't be happier with the result”, explains Diolosa. Continuing with our form of “Sonic Therapy” , the songs on our newest release Rise have been birthed from real life struggles, situations and emotions that we face daily, have dealt with or that has affected those around us .  From the loss of loved ones, the daily fight for survival and dealing with our fears to overcoming addictions, understanding our humanity and empathizing with those contemplating suicide because you've been in that dark place at one time. See for yourself how KLANK mesh the aggression and pounce of metal with the infectious drive of the dance floor and intertwines it within a foreground of synths, samples, loops and low end to form a truly unique sound all their own.   FOR MORE INFO ON THE BAND VISIT THEM AT klank nation PLEASE SHARE AND FOLLOW ON ALL SOCIAL MEDIAS FACE BOOK - https://www.facebook.com/johnnytacospodcast INSTAGRAM - https://www.instagram.com/the_johnny_tacos_show/ TIK TOC Special Thanks to CHRIS JOHNSON - PRODUCER SERGIO POLLOCK - ENDING MUSIC AUSTIN WALLACE - INTRO SONG RICH WILLIAMS – STREET TEAM LEAD   TO BE IN THE STREET TACO BAND PLEASE EMAIL AT JOHNNYTACOSPODCAST@GMAIL.COM

By Davy Crockett - Listen or Read Subscribe to Ultrarunning History Podcast New Book! Grand Canyon Rim to Rim History The Barkley Marathons course (thought to be roughly 130 miles and about 63,000 feet of elevation gain) at Frozen Head State Park in Tennessee was conquered for the first time in six years. Laz (Gary Cantrell) blew the conch shortly before 9 a.m., on March 14, 2023, signaling to the competitors that they had one hour to prepare for the start. At 9:54 a.m. Laz, sporting a new "geezer" hat in Japanese, lit the ceremonial cigarette, and about 40 daring athletes were off and running on the grueling course that “eats its young.”  Previously, only fifteen people had finished the 100-mile version of this brutal trail race which was introduced in 1986. The 2023 start of the Barkley Marathons The 2023 field, including eight women, ran or walked up the trail toward the Cumberland Mountains. They had all trained hard, but also had to figure out and endure the purposely mysterious and fun registration process. In addition to writing an essay, this year, they had to answer a series of questions including, "What will be the 119th element on the periodic table." Frozen Ed at Frozen Head State Park 75-year-old “Frozen” Ed Furtaw was the oldest starter. He was the first person ever to finish the Barkley Marathons back in 1988 when the course was about 55 miles. He finished that year in 32:14. This Barkley legend also came up with the idea for the book checkpoints, so runners could prove they made it around the course. This year, Furtaw was the first Barkley casualty, returning to camp early during loop one. Several runners finished loop one in a blazing 8:18. The cutoff for loop one was 13:20. To get an official finish, runners needed to finish five loops within 60 hours. There were no course markings, just general directions to the book checkpoints, and they could take a map. No GPS contraptions are permitted, but they could take a compass and a primitive watch. Seven runners did not finish loop one in time to start loop two, but 31 started loop two. Loop one was in the clockwise direction, two and three would be counter-clockwise, four in the preferred clockwise direction. For loop five (if any runners reached that far), the first runner could choose their direction, and the next runner would have to go in the opposite direction. The weather was pretty incredible this year, although the water jugs provided at the tower on Frozen Head still froze during the night. Keith Dunn As usual, Keith Dunn was the main resource in the camp for Barkley updates, staying up late at night to tweet updates to his 65,000 followers. For a time, he was trending #3 on Twitter. He used three phones with different network carriers to make sure he could stay connected. During Loop one, instead of naming runners, he gave them nicknames describing them such as, "Guy with Mohawk," "Guy with Glasses," and "Another Bearded Guy." Three-time Barkley finisher, Jared Campbell, was called "nondescript guy" for the duration of his run. Nickademus de la Rosa and Laz Barkley veteran Nickademus de la Rosa, of Bellingham, Washington, a previous finisher, returned to camp before finishing loop two. He said, “I am done at 1.75 loops and couldn't be happier with the decision. I got what I wanted (which was to see if the course was still possible for me.) After some irrecoverable navigational errors, too slow of a pace and a dying headlamp I lost precious time needed in order to finish.” As runners finished loops, they presented their collection of thirteen book pages to Laz, proving that they reached each book on the course. Their pages needed to match the bib number they were assigned for the loop. About a day before the race, a master map of the locations of the books was provided by Laz. Traditionally book titles are amusingly appropriate for the task, such as "Death Walks the Woods," and "Don't Count Me Out.

Her father, Clay Graham, sang with the Pilgrim Jubiliees and her mother, Josephine Howard, was a member of the Caravans, a group that would eventually be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When Howard was in her early teens, her mother moved the family to Los Angeles. Already aiming at a career in music, the 15-year-old Howard received her first break when she participated in a teen beauty contest. Augie Johnson, leader of the group Side Effect, happened to be in the audience; impressed with Howard's singing talent, Howard also joined the lineup of Side Effect in 1978 when another singer departed. She sang with Side Effect until 1982. Howard signed a contract with Atlantic Records in the mid-1980s and recorded her first solo album, “Come Share My Love”, in 1986. The title track from the album was its first single, hitting the top ten of the R&B charts and reaching number five in late 1986. A remake of the pop standard "Imagination," which Howard had fought to include on “Come Share My Love”, was another hit from the album. Howard's second solo album, 1988's “Love Confessions”, offered another top-five R&B hit with "Baby Be Mine." "That's What Love Is," a duet with Gerald Levert, also hit the R&B charts. In the meantime, Howard's third solo album,” Miki Howard”, was released in 1989 and proved her most commercially successful to date. The single "Ain't Nuthin' in the World" became Howard's first number-one hit on the R&B charts and another song, "Love Under New Management," followed it to number two and became one of Howard's signature tunes. Howard continued with a successful solo career after switching to Giant Records in 1991. Her first single under her new contract, "Ain't Nobody like You," became Howard's second number-one R&B hit. The subsequent album, 1992's “Femme Fatale”, featured Howard's renditions of classic tracks originally performed by Dinah Washington ("This Bitter Earth") and Billie Holiday ("Good Morning Heartache"). After a casting director saw her perform some Billie Holiday tunes at a New York City concert at Radio City Music Hall, Howard was offered the chance to portray Holiday in a nightclub scene in director Spike Lee's 1992 film “Malcolm X”. The following year, Howard recorded an entire album of Holiday songs, “Miki Sings Billie”, including her favorite Holiday tune, "Don't Explain." In 1993, Howard made another movie appearance in director John Singleton's “Poetic Justice”. She released “Live Plus” in 1996 and a comeback album of original material, “Can't Count Me Out”, in 1997. After a four year hiatus, “Three Wishes”, was released in 2001 to excellent reviews. The album earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional R&B Recording. She followed that with “Pillow Talk” (2006), “Private Collection” (2008), “I Choose To Be Happy” (2015) and a live recording “Miki Howard- Live In Concert” in 2015. Howard was featured on the second season on TV One's critically acclaimed bio-series “Unsung”. Miki's episode was the highest rated of her season and in 2015 was adaListen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa.

We also talked about playing early shows with bands like Count Me Out, No Warning, and American Nightmare. We talk about how they ended up releasing their full length through Think Fast records, a label that became pretty well known in hardcore around that time. Roughneck Riot are currently making a comeback. Their 2019 hiatus was meant to last one year, but Covid had other plans. Now, at the beginning of 2022, they've just dropped their third studio album Burn It To The Ground. It's I sat down with Matty Humphries (vocals/mandolin) and Chris Green (guitar/vocals) at Greeny's house in Warrington. We grabbed some beers and some mics and proceeded to talk about the new record, the evolution of the band from a fun teenage project to the skilled troupe they are now, and how arguing about songwriting is the key to making tunes as memorable as theirs. We also tell some wildly inaccurate, libellous stories about Faintest Idea. At the end of the podcast, you can hear their single Don't Count Me Out. "Chiiild" is a Canadian experimental soul band led by singer/producer Yonatan Ayal (aka xSDTRK) and guitarist/producer "Pierre-Luc Rioux (aka PL).Despite both hailing from Montréal, the duo didn't meet until crossing paths in the LA music scene, at a time when Yonatan was forging a career as a producer/beat-maker and PL was doing the same as a producer/writer and session guitarist for numerous artists. Once the pair decided to collaborate it took a few years for the "Chiiild" sound to emerge, first experimenting with a fully "soul" sound and then making tracks with the intention that other singers would be featured on them. Finally Yonatan had a break-through, realizing that the only way his music would not get watered down was to become a singer himself and to write about personal subjects that resonated with him.As usual, there is a lot more to know about the background and paths "Chiiild" have taken to get here, so check out this latest episode of Roots to Grooves where Jay and Jesse also spin a selection of their favorite tracks from "Chiiild".To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Ben Flanagan returns to the podcast! He first came on in 2018 after winning his NCAA title in the 10,000m. Now he's a professional runner for the Reebok Boston Track Club and he's currently quarantined in Canada before he competes at their respective Olympic Trials in Montreal later this month. We're all fairly familiar with what it takes to make the U.S. Olympic team with a top three finish at each event but it's a little more complex with Canada. He explains why. His personal best in the 5,000m is 13:20, which was run at the Platinum PT Qualifier put on by Tracksmith at the end of May. I was behind the mic for that race and while I saw it was a four-second personal best, he tells us why it was a much bigger deal in his hopes for Tokyo. We also catch up on life since his last podcast appearance, he's got some nice things to say about Mason Ferlic and much more. You can watch Ben compete in the men's 5,000m on Saturday, June 26 at 8:30 p.m. ET. Athletics Canda said the event will be streamed for free on athleticscanada.tv.| Full schedule here. This conversation takes us inside the heart and mind of two stroke survivors. Jo Ann Glim and Brad Neufeld are co-hosts on their own program, Don't Count Me Out. Jo Ann and Brad experienced different types of life-changing neurological events. They have now partnered in hosting a program to help other victims of strokes share their own stories and learn about successful coping. How do stroke survivors prepare for a future so different from what was expected. How do we overcome sadness and depression over the losses that are so heavy, for so many? What happens during the grief phase and what comes next? Instead of seeing closed doors, how can we open new doors and explore new opportunities? As Brad says, Every challenge that we face in life is conquerable, especially when we work together. Mini Bios Jo Ann Glim was born in Chicago, Illinois to a military family and raised in Anacortes, Washington in the far reaches of the Pacific Northwest. Tragically, Jo Ann's mother passed away from a stroke when Jo Ann was fourteen. This was the beginning of a life-path plotted with many dark events. In her own words, “Instead of consuming me, they made me stronger, and I'm here to tell you, darkness can be replaced with light.” Jo Ann's three-pronged career of broadcast and print media, freelance writing, and business management formed her into the indie author she is today. Her 5-Star books, the award-winning Begotten With Love, and her newest release Trapped Within, are both non-fiction. They are life-stories filled with challenges, hope, and humor. A paralyzing stroke nearly twenty-four years ago left her most of all, grateful for life itself! Brad Neufeld is the host of Resilience Talk Network and Co-host of the Podcast, Don't Count Me Out. He has a long history in radio programming and hosting, and has learned to successfully cope with a severe brain abscess and surgery, and subsequent TIA's. Singer-songwriter Angie Nussey's beautiful new album “I Have No Idea What I’m Doing” grew out of an intense focus on her spiritual well-being, after an emotional breakdown in 2007. Mostly piano driven, the new recording took two and a half years to complete - recording at home with support from musical friends. Angie gave a wonderful Tedx talk on music and spirituality in Sudbury in 2014 which is an excellent introduction to both her music and spirituality. As well as her solo career, Angie is also a member of songwriting trio Boreal, with fellow singer-songwriters Tannis Slimmon and Katherine Wheatley. The trio tours 'Songs For The Snowy Season' annually each December. Angie is currently releasing a song and story from I Have No Idea What I'm Doing on a monthly basis. For more information about her music, visit http://angienussey.com. Music: Angie Nussey “All Your Courage”, “Forgotten Names”, “Former Me” and “Count Me Out” from “I Have No Idea What I’m Doing” (2020, Self) CDN. I am very proud to welcome the Multi-Talented Miki Howard. Her Journey is incredible and her wisdom is sure to inspire all of us. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Alicia Michelle "Miki" Howard was the daughter of two well-known gospel singers. Miki's episode was the highest rated of her season and in 2015 was adapted into a TV movie for TV One to be released in June of 2016 with “Chi-Raq” actress Teyonah Parris in the lead role.

We're back it is Friday at the 35 acres and a microphone podcast farm I'm Aaron Goodwin, you are already here if you are within the sound of my voice. If you would do me a solid and share with a friend or post on a wall or tweet about this podcast that pays tribute to the true school of hip hop. Old school.. Real throwbacks. Not the 90's. I've said before the years we research are from 1980ish to 1989. And new jack swing's start signaled the movements end as radio play for the format rhythm chr or rhymthmic had been born. It was a Latino hispanic based format that eventually turned to a more afro-centric type feel as teddy Riley/ guy.. jodeci, and so many more... started taking the lead I qualify myself as a radio historian. Being in rhythm radio at the beginning and a fan of it, prior to. I live in a very agricultural area of central California and have retired from radio and now do parties and weddings asa mobile dj. This podcast is a labor of love for the fans and it helps me cope with all the crazy in the world and the actual action of producing voice and the types of things I did at radio I can do through this lil project. season 2 after a one year hiatus. 10 thousand downloads world wide weekly and it is neat being here in a America. Northern California.. and seeing the messages from our socials or the adds at the Facebook page and the foreign folks around the world. Names in other languages. How the culture invaded the far away china as American culture spawned there in the 80's and how asians rule the breakdance world in my opinion its all very cool and that drives me to the work to make this thing happen. All for Love is the third studio album by American R&B quintet New Edition, released by MCA Records on November 8, 1985. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Also, this would be the final studio album to feature original group member Bobby Brown, who would shortly depart for a solo career until he would later return for their 1996 comeback album with the group, Home Again. By Spring 1985, New Edition was one of the biggest pop acts in the world after the success of their self-titled second album released the year before. However, the group was now in mortgage to MCA Records, as a result of having borrowed money from the label to disentangle themselves from a stifling production deal they mistakenly signed during the recording of their previous album. As a result, All for Love would become the first in a cluster of albums the group would be forced to record during this period to work off its debt. And While most of the members were comfortable with the group's direction, Bobby Brown was becoming increasingly discontent and unappreciative with its bubblegum pop image. Brown was also agitated at having not been more prominently featured as a lead vocalist on the album. Vincent Brantley, the album's main producer, had originally sought to give Brown more solo spots. However, MCA balked at this idea — insisting that Ralph Tresvant continue to be used on principal vocals. During a national tour in Oakland, California to promote the album, Brown often cut in on Tresvant's leads, performing more raunchily onstage, compared to his band mates. Also, Brown angered the group's management by disrespectfully throwing his mike in the air and being ungrateful when not getting his way onstage. Growing tension between Brown and his band mates eventually reached a standoff, which contributed to his being terminated from the group in December 1985. Following Brown's departure, New Edition would continue to promote All for Love as a quartet. Lets get to the singles which are some of the strongest the new edition ever did. The neat thing about rhythm in these days is you didn't know the name and artist but you sure knew the songs by sound. Made everyone an a&r person back then. Because you knew what you were hearing was genius and Ralph tresvant might very well be the best ever and beyond Michael Jackson as far as some were concerned back then as the best voice in r and b. And when you go back and listen. You can totally see the reason for the comparison and why Mca made the decision to keep him as lead once they secured them for the mortgage albums as the band thought. Without knowing the drama, I think in my mind these were some of the best bubble gummy bad ass tunes that were coming out tracks like "Count Me Out", "Count Me Out" was released as a single in September 1985 on the MCA . Much like the group's earliest single, "Cool It Now", again, lead singer Ralph Tresvant is warned by his friends (co-members Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell and Michael Bivins) to not fall for a girl after he told them to "count him out" of any activities that they had planned to do much to his friends' dismay. The song's music video was notable for Brown's absence as he had broken from the group around the time of the video. Only Tresvant, DeVoe, Bell, and Bivins were in the video and parts of the song that originally belonged to Brown were lipsynced by Bell. Brown's vocals remain on the song. Despite a modest showing at number fifty-one on the pop singles chart, the song reached number two on the Billboard R&B singles chart. And here again as we talk about rhythm radio and the eighties the overt racism by mgrs and ads at radio opted to not buy in in markets like where I live a predominantly at the time white area. Older white male owners. Simply like the vote in California where you see the big cities they had radioes there and in those big cities new edition got played due to demographics   This is the second week of the new edition feature on my podcast the old school rewind last week's is posted and maybe in your downloads go check it out. We're parlaying and displaying.. the type of term you'd have heard back then. Car culture lowrider, The language has changed And the new edition are going through times in their life where they are old for sophomoric bubblegum tracks, but due to them each taking equal loans to buy out themselves from the prior deal they were in debt. And for me and my listening these are the magical songs and the music was progressing as it should The next single up from all for love is a little bit of love is all it takes. A favorite of mine and as I wiki'd to find some information on this single. There I nothing out there. Which to me is perplexing. Save that for another podcast. Let your ears do the listening and you'll feel the feel of new edition more than many of their tracks.. play a little bit of love is all it takes This is the second episode where one wasn't enough to feature the stellar work of the new edition. We're up to and maybe because I was a sophomoric kid going through the high school years I'm more clued into the broken heart girls being true to your girl. Alll of the things you'd expect from a ballad that is what NE was so good at doing Play "With You All the Way". Toward the year's end, Christmas All Over The World, a holiday EP, was released as well as an oldies album of tunes from the '50s sung by the group with an '80s production style. Earth Angel feat lil Anthony By 1987, New Edition was a group in transition. The band members were aging out of their teens into their twenties, and sought for their image and sound to reflect their coming of age. In addition to employing the famed production team of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to help steer the music in a new direction, they also recruited Washington, D.C.-based baritone/tenor Johnny Gill—who, in 1984, had scored a hit with R&B singer Stacy Lattisaw on "Perfect Combination". The New Edition members had actually known Gill since they released their hit "Candy Girl" in 1983 and Gill released his R&B Top 30 hit "Super Love" that same year. They had joked that they would let him in the group if he could improve his dancing skills. Prompting Gill’s entrance into the group was when lead singer Ralph Tresvant considered recording a solo album. To circumvent New Edition being left without a lead singer, Michael Bivins suggested bringing in 20-year-old Gill to replace him. Gill accepted the invitation, joining the group in the spring of 1987. Tresvant, however, wasn’t ready to leave— resulting in New Edition, inadvertently, becoming a quintet again as they began production on their fifth album, Heart Break.[5] While most of Heart Break features principal vocals by Tresvant, with occasional solos by Ricky Bell, Gill’s voice is significantly displayed as the secondary lead throughout the album. Gill took the lead on the track “Boys to Men”- a song in which the singer initially resisted and resented recording, feeling it was too juvenile. "Boys To Men" became one of the album's most popular numbers, despite it never being officially released as a single.[6] Another standout album track was “Competition,” a song written by Tresvant that addresses the disappointment felt over the departure of Bobby Brown two years earlier. One song in particular, "Where It All Started", was a thinly veiled jab at New Kids on the Block. The group was discovered by their former producer Maurice Starr as a direct response to New Edition severing ties with him on less than amicable terms.[7] In an ironic twist, Jam & Lewis- the writers and producers behind the song- would also work with New Kids on the Block's lead singer Jordan Knight on his 1999 self-titled debut a little over a decade later. The two groups would later team up for a duet on the latter's 2008 reunion album The Block. "If It Isn't Love" from 1988 and the first single from Heart Break. The song became the biggest hit from that album, getting into the top ten of the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number seven, and reached the second position on the Hot Black Singles chart. Its chart performance and well-received music video garnered the quintet their first nomination for Best R&B Performance by a "Duo or Group with Vocals" at the 31st Grammy Awards in February 1989. The song and video is also notable for being the introduction of fellow R&B singer Johnny Gill as a new member of the R&B quintet. Many have called this particular album the most seminal New Edition album. Four fans from Philadelphia in particular were inspired by one of the songs on the album. "Boys to Men", the song that Johnny Gill hated recording, ended up becoming the name of the group who changed their name to Boyz II Men. The group would end up being managed and mentored by Michael Bivins. Boyz II Men names New Edition as one of their most influential bands. The album also saw a successful concert tour for the group as well. Through 1988 and 1989, New Edition toured all over the world with opening acts, ex-New Edition member Bobby Brown (who had also found big time success with his breakthrough album, Don't Be Cruel) and Al B. Sure!.[5] Interesting note the R&B group Jagged Edge named their sophomore album J.E. Heartbreak as a tribute to Heart Break The new edition album. Here's the first single Play if it isn't love We're up to the second single Written and produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis with Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill and Ricky Bell on lead vocals, this mid-tempo song is about a man being fancied by a woman who he thinks is not his type, and is trying to gently let her down. His friends, meanwhile, can’t understand his lack of interest in said female, who they believe is a catch. No matter all the success Though the song was a sizable hit on urban radio, peaking at #3 on the R&B charts in the fall of 1988— unlike its predecessor, “If It Isn’t Love,” it failed to make the same impression on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart—where it peaked at #95. The radio still hasn't changed but has made mark-ed progress at this time in 1988.. The music video for “You’re Not My Kind of Girl” is set to a concert performance of the song (which was led in by the music video for “If It Isn’t Love.”) The concert was held at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California. New Edition held a radio contest for tickets to the taping, which were won by LA resident, Viveca McGuire. Play. One of new editions best songs   "Can You Stand the Rain" was released on December 13, 1988 by MCA Records as the third single from their fifth studio album, Heart Break. It was Written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis with Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant and Ricky Bell on lead vocals and Michael Bivins with a spoken piece, "Can You Stand the Rain" is about a relationship presently going well, but the man is asking the woman if he can count on her to remain by his side, in case things should ever become stormy. Despite "Can You Stand The Rain" failing to reach the Hot 100 top forty, peaking instead at number 44, it became New Edition's fourth single to top Billboard's R&B singles chart. when you watch the video, much like the stuff from the solo career of Ralph sings great. The music video featured cameos from Malcolm Jamal Warner (who also directed the video), Heavy D & The Boyz (The group's labelmate), Shanice Wilson, The Boys, Robert Townsend, and Brooke Payne, who also appeared in the "If It Isn't Love" video. RE 75: I'm Breaking Up With The Word Alcoholic

Recovery Elevator 🌴

Paul, with 18.5 months of sobriety, shares how he did it. That's right, I'm breaking up with the word alcoholic and opting for a simpler less defining answer of I don't drink. I got the idea for this podcast after reading the following article and I hope you like the show notes. As you can probably tell, I've had some recent help with show notes since mine leave much to still be desired. COUNT ME OUT OF “RECOVERY NATION” - NEGATIVE SELF-IDENTITY IS THE CRUELEST STIGMA (Stanton Peele: July 7th, 2016)   The labels “alcoholic”, “addicts”, and “in recovery” dehumanizes people, both for the person     themselves and their children.               -Influence contributor, Meghan Ralston, wrote in her article (I'm Breaking Up With the Word              Addict),   Agree - “Even in a chaotic stage of drug use, we are not “other.” We are women, we are someone's daughter, we continue to laugh, we continue to like jazz and cheeseburgers and comfy pajamas. We cry, we get so lonely, we hate sitting in traffic. Addiction can be wretched, no question, but we do not ever stop being human beings, even during the times in our lives when we are dependent on drugs.”   Disagree - “For many people, myself included, the word “addict” is incredibly harmful and offensive. You do not have my permission to call me an addict. You can of course refer to yourself as an addict, if you wish.”[1]   Don't refer to yourself as an “addict.”               -It's depressing             -No one should highlight/define themselves by their worst trait or period in              their life.   These concepts arose in conversation between Dr. Peele and Talk Recovery Radio:   “Dr. Stanton Peele was today’s thought provoking live guest on Talk Recovery.… our show is meant to be a platform where all pathways to recovery are welcomed to be discussed… But today, that almost didn’t happen. There was an 'us and them' feel to the show… Why do people feel the word addict is stigmatizing?”[2]               -Peele explains that the host seemed to feel that he was part of a movement              that set people recovering apart from everyone else.                           -Culture seems to encourage this separation.                              -public policies                              -celebrities' confessionals                              -treatment circles                              -recovery high schools                              -etc.               -Show host ironically wonders why there's a stigma towards addicts while he himself labels               himself as one.   Peele refuses to label himself by marching with Recovery Nation, a group that lets themselves be lead     by their labels.                         -”Thinking of yourself as an alcoholic causes you to behave the way you think alcoholics                            behave.”        -To quote Peele and Ilse Thompson,   “You are not your addiction; you are a valuable human being whose qualities endure and exceed your addiction. … It’s impossible to expect a person to achieve wellness by focusing on his or her faults and mistakes. Perhaps this is why conventional recovery asserts that people must remain 'in recovery' forever and continue to identify themselves as addicts, no matter how long they are sober.”[3]     -Today people seem to expect labeling. Peele states,   “Imagine a child with a learning difficulty looking at you and saying, 'I am retarded,' or 'I am stupid.' We would cry and hug them and tell them that wasn’t true!”   -Peele goes on to pose the question of why it is that people always discourage each other from   identifying themselves by their problems or illnesses, except when it comes to addiction.   -While debating former head of treatment at Hazelden, Peele asked how he short-circuited his family   heritage.               -While the clinician had a cynically humorous answer, Peele gave his answer for the man to the               radio show hosts. The method to preventing his children from taking on addictive traits was to               raise them in emotionally and financially stable home, encourage them, provide for them, and               allow them to be who they want to be.               -What doesn't help children, is to burden them with the “destiny” that they would most likely be               an alcoholic.   -The “tough love” approach often comes in too late, Peele says.               -Before a child can misbehave during drug use, you ought to instill him with morals of               responsibility to themselves and others.   -Peele is reframing addiction in an opposite direction from the “disease” mindset. He puts it like this:   “Addiction is not a consequence of taking drugs and drinking. Rather, it arises from the way in which these and other compelling activities fit into people’s lives and meanings.”   -To end the interview, Peele asked how the show host quit smoking cigarettes.               -His response was that his recovery program didn't allow it, but also that it didn't allow him to               call himself a cigarette addict. Rather, they insisted on the generic term addict.               -He then was able to quit smoking (one of the  hardest substance addictions) without patches.               This was because it didn't address smoking, or label them as cigarette smokers.   FOR COPYRIGHT PURPOSES   All content read here has been cited appropriately. With only a few shopping days left before Christmas you can get into the spirit of the season with a new episode of Edgeland podcast. This week Bill reads a Christmas Sermon by Robert Ingersoll that sums up the Christmas holiday very well. In the interview portion of the show Bill talks with Mary Brulatour of Self Defense Family about the rock and roll town of Richmond, training in Muay Thai, and the stress/thrill of performing. In the non edge section Bill talks with Cornell Ward of the Walking Alone podcast about his early days on the tuba, playing in Count Me Out, and the art of eight limbs. If you like the straight edge, if you like rocking, and if you like deadly martial arts then this is the perfect episode for you.
