I first off wanted to sincerely thank all you listeners, especially those who take the time to reach out on social media and to those who have been here since the beginning. It’s been one heck of a journey and time flies because we’re officially at the 100thInterview for the Pacing and Racing Podcast. If there’s one thing I reflect on quite often in this podcast journey, is that just 100 interviews ago, I was in my basement with a $40 microphone and a laptop and I was YouTubing “how to record a podcast” tutorials without any expectations of going anywhere with it. I did the interviews all around my kids naptime schedules and would do early morning and late night edits. By no means was it a cake walk but I look back and am truly thankful to chat to each and every guest on the show. So if there’s ANY motivation I can pass onto you, is that you don’t have to be good at something in order to try it out. I thought I would be the last person who has their own podcast but here I am! It takes total consistency and honestly you have to go into it for the enjoyment and learning aspect of it and if you don’t see results overnight then don’t let it bum you out. Keep putting in the grind, enjoy the process, and you’ll amaze yourself with the outcome in the end. But enough about me and my journey here, this is about you guys and I wanted this 100th interview to be extra special and Holly definitely delivered that. Holly was the 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion and has completely been a dominant force in the 70.3 circuit. She was the runner up in the 2019 IM World Champion after coming off a Fractured Ankle back at Oceanside 70.3 in 2018; one in which she suffered from in the bike leg of the race and STILL managed to finish 2nd overall! She joins us today in a motivational chat about her story through her triathlon journey, the PTO, mindset moving forward from COVID and so much more. This week I recognized people are consumed with fear based on what they've been taught to fear. People seem to think their way of thinking should be the only way. They are afraid of different beliefs, threatened. Looking at everything as happening now as we, imperfect humans, being afraid actually helps me. I've noticed admitting fear is not an easy thing for most of us. Its usually one of of those moments wher if you say hey I think we're all afraid; the response is usually followed by "Not me" and words explaining why their reactions are right.... We don't have to live our lives in fear. We don't have to live in a world consumed by distrust, We don't have to be angry because others see the world differently than we do---I mean, of course they do, none of us have lived the exact same life, We don't have to judge each other---in fact we are warned of the pitfalls of doing so all over religious texts. We can relax and treat others with respect and dignity because they are human beings, We can be kind, We can see more in others than they are showing us, We can look for the Light of Divine in all, We can ask questions rather than judge---it takes a long time to build the kind of fear we are seeing, WE CAN BE LOVE What should Love do NOW? Let's each map out what we want our future to look like and then start living as though it looks that way. Maybe, just maybe, LOVE WILL CONQUER ALL. But even if not, we can relax in the tranquility of knowing the being over whom we have control, ourself, is doing his/her part to live in peace and in so doing is working to build a world of peace. It takes strength to be peace, to be love, to be kind---together we can do it. Namaste Mara
So as the year 2020 has an ever-changing landscape with COVID 19 and race events cancelling globally I felt the need to react accordingly with the Podcast. I know we will eventually get back into the race season; we just simply don’t know when and because of that it may be disheartening and difficult to find motivation to put in those long hours preparing for an IRONMAN. Not only that, but in a time where a virus runs ramped in our society I think the last thing we want to do is put anymore pressure on our immune system by risking over-training. Therefore, one of the shifts in the podcast I wanted to introduce is incorporating more health and wellness information across the platform so that we as endurance athletes can get the longevity out of our passions. This means I’d like to start having on experts across the health and wellness scene talk about ways we can best supplement our current endurance training, whether its alternative training advice, health advice, supplement education and more. That’s why I am excited to have on Dr. David Minkoff. A quick Synopsis of his medical background here; David has a background in researching and developing new medicines to fight viral disease and he is also a board certified pediatrics Doctor that’s transitioned into alternative medicine to help the chronically ill and puts an emphasis on overall health and toxin mitigation. David also lives what he preaches with over 43rd IRONMAN finishes at age 71 and he enacts as the prime example of just how far you can go in the sport if you take the healthy approach and make the most out of longevity in triathlon. I’m delighted we have David on to talk with us about his triathlon journey and how we can get the best performances out of ourselves through health. David has extensive insight and knowledge around nutritional supplementation for optimal health and performance and has worked tirelessly on creating supplements to help athletes stay healthy through training. You ever hurt yourself, or get injured through the fault of someone else?Either way, you have that one part of your body that is injured and not functioning,The way it is designed to be working.And this throws off how you do things, how you get around…Like maybe you break a toe, and now you can’t walk the way your body is designed to walk.Or you have shoulder surgery and your arm now doesn’t function the way it is designed to,And this throws off the way you perform daily functions.Things you normally wouldn’t even have to think about how to do,Are now requiring actual thought and intention to accomplish.I have had multiple physical injuries…neck injury, broken foot, sprains, pulled muscles, back injury, etc.And with each one, something in my body had to compensate,For the part of my body that was injured so I could accomplish every day tasks.And that throws the whole body out of whack.Because of the inability of this part of my body to contribute,Another part of my body has to pick up the slack and do more than it is designed to do,Or do a job that is completely foreign to its design.And because of that, the body isn’t as effective as it could be,If every part was working as designed.Now, it will still function and get done what it has to do,But not as well as it otherwise could, and not as effective as it should be able to.And it isn’t just when we are physically injured.We withdraw into ourselves when we have been injured emotionally; spiritually.When our emotions and spirits and minds are injured,We think we have nothing to offer; we are not useful; we are not a loved part of the family.And that can be way more debilitating than a physical injury.A physical injury will heal, or the body will adapt in a way the still allows the body to function.When we are injured emotionally; spiritually; mentally,Our body cannot make the adjustments to adapt.We cannot not physically heal an injury of that depth.It isn’t a ‘rub some dirt in it’ kind of injury where you can just ‘walk it off’.The emotional; spiritual; mental injury is by far the more devastating injury,When it comes to the Body of Christ.It can be hidden, yet still be broken…we can be broken and no one can see it.But inside we are shredded.And that is not only devastating to the person,But it is a real blow to the Body of Christ as a whole.You see, the Body of Christ needs all of us to be what we are created to be.Now that being said, just like the human body,The Body of Christ can heal itself through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.Just like our body can mend itself with help from doctors,The Body of Christ can mend itself with help from Christ.By that I do not mean the Body of Christ can do it on our own.What I mean is that through our dependance on Christ, we can be healed.Now - Let’s look at our little part of the Body of Christ here in Wye Mills.All the folks in here are important parts of the Body of Christ.We have folks that love through food. - Expand on this (cooking for those who can’t; participating in Neighborhood table, etc.)We have folks that love through making things. - Expand on this (making blankets and giving them away, etc)

If something we are doing or trying helps you to achieve a healthier state of being, then we couldn't be happier. But... Remember, we are not doctors and this podcast is filled with our experiences and sometimes our opinions. We don't ALWAYS follow the results of studies done in nutritional research because much of that "science" is absolute garbage. What we do encourage is following a Real Food Diet. Meaning that your meals are made up primarily of things that have zero additional ingredients, like beef. That's a real food. Beyond that you will need to do some experimenting of your own. We all want to build better WordPress websites. Unfortunately, they don’t always end up looking great. If there was a way that you could bundle it all and build a website in, say, a weekend, would you take it? Well then, brace yourself, because it IS possible to build a WordPress site in a weekend! In this episode, we get a little help from Matthew Averkamp who knows all about building a website in a matter of days. I spoke with Matthew about Launch Party, his new course and toolkit for beginner WordPress site builders. He’s created a program that can teach anyone how to build a website from scratch. Here at WPE we call it “a website in bag” because it literally comes with everything, all the way down to customizable color schemes. Tune in now to hear Matt and I talk about where he came up with the idea and why he’s offering his courses and templates absolutely 100% free forever. Like Father, Like Son Matt has been building his own businesses for the past 15 years, but his first foray into the world of online courses was actually with his father. Matt and his dad created Accounting Coach, a website for online accounting courses and toolkits that’s still seeing traffic to this day. The problem was that Matt didn’t want to keep creating new content for accounting when he’s much more interested in user testing and helping people build their own businesses online. He started Launch Party this year with a focus on being able to build an entire website (from scratch, mind you) in a weekend. He teaches from the templates he’s created in order to help consultants and other entrepreneurs build beautiful websites quickly. Because the faster you get online and running, the faster you can grow your business. Matt’s Nomadic Entrepreneurial Journey Matt is addicted to traveling. In fact, right now he’s in Thailand. But no matter how long he’s traveling or where he goes, he’s always thinking about his business. That’s the luxury of working remotely and helping others build and host websites. It gives him the freedom to focus on what really matters, and this year it was split-testing. Split-testing is just a fancy way of making sure your website works the way you and your users want it to. For Matt, his year-long split test saw revenues increase by 30%, which is more than enough to keep this man comfortable as a nomadic entrepreneur. “Structure your business in such a way so that you can step away from it.” Matt’s business structure relies a lot on remote teams. He may be in Thailand, but his design team is in Canada, and his friend in the United States takes care of the customer service side of things. But Matt swears you don’t need to maintain daily communication to keep your business running smoothly. His strategy involves keeping everything project-based so that it’s much easier to manage across long distances. While his team is working on their own projects, Matt spends his time doing what he loves most about this business: user testing. At the 27-minute mark, Matt breaks down why user testing is so important to his business model and how he uses it to create the unique structure of his Launch Party course and toolkits. Some important takeaways from Matt’s user testing toolkit are: Start out small with something like a course outline or an “about” statement to see what kinds of users are interested; Advance with an easy tutorial to see how skilled your users actually are; Pay close attention to user patterns and where users are having the most difficulty; and Include plenty of visual tools, like timelines, so both you and your users can see where and how the growth will happen. Now Let’s Talk About Building a WordPress Site with Launch Party Through extensive user testing, Matt was able to figure out exactly what new users needed from a WordPress tutorial. Because it’s quite overwhelming out there. For example, if you go searching for elementor templates, you’ll have hundreds upon hundreds of options at your disposal. But with Launch Party, Matt created one killer feature that makes him stand out. I’m talking about the customizable color option! “It was impossible to come up with premade color schemes that everybody liked.” User testing showed that people were very sensitive to the colors used on their website, but Matt couldn’t come up with a universal color scheme that pleased everyone. So he simply made it possible for users to modify colors to fit their own unique tastes. You just find a color pack you like, customize the colors until they’re perfect for you, then download it and use it in any of your Launch Party templates. No other templates give you this much creative freedom! Just don’t go overboard with it. I’m guilty of that. Tune in at the 19-minute mark to hear about my favorite Launch Party color scheme and what possessed me to try and change it all for no reason. It’s a weird element in human nature that Matt tapped into with his user testing. We all, for some odd reason, want to change things even if they’re perfect, just to see what happens when we do. Launch Party makes that possible to do with your website, and it makes it easy to change it back if your suddenly change your mind like I did! What does the future hold for Launch Party? While Matt, myself, and the rest of the world are waiting on the new WordPress to launch, Launch Party has its own new features waiting in the wings. New colors will be coming - Matt promises a pastel pack, but the toolkits and courses he’s designed are specifically catered to building a WordPress website from scratch. The future of Launch Party will include a weekend-long course where new and seasoned WordPress aficionados can come together for a weekend and build their WordPress sites together. The course will end with a launch party for everyone’s sites, which is what inspired the name of the company to begin with. Users can look out for this course and others like it in 2019. Wrap Up The most important takeaway from this episode is not how quickly you can build a WordPress site, although that is pretty amazing. The nugget I’m focused on most is the custom content and user testing Matt put into Launch Party. He custom built his own LMS based on user testing so he could deliver exactly what his customers wanted. He listened to their feedback and logged their experiences on his site and tutorials in order to create a program that is not only user-friendly but also completely free. Real estate success for 2019 starts NOW “Let’s get together after the first of the year” is a response I wish I never had to hear again. Sadly, I know that it will be used to put off the steps necessary to achieve real estate success time and time again. It might as well be the stuck agent’s mantra. I get it. The holidays are a crazy time and it’s easier to start something new on January one than it is to do so while drowning in a sea of grandma’s sweet potato casserole. But can I suggest something to you? How you end this year is how you are going to start 2019. Wouldn’t you rather hit the ground running? Don’t let the end of the year keep you from your new beginning. Let me give you the tools to make 2019 your best year ever. Clutter is keeping you from success in your real estate business Life as a new real estate agent can be pretty overwhelming. There is so much to do and so many avenues you can take to grow your business. The problem is most of them work. I know that doesn’t sound like a problem, but hear me out. Most strategies will grant you some level of success. However, a few clients here and there isn’t the kind of success you set out to achieve. If you’re doing too much of EVERYTHING then you are doing NOTHING well. Stop cluttering your life with all of the wrong things and start going after the three pillars that will actually grow your business. Your sphere of influence, chase, and attraction pillars will help you get the kind of success you’re looking for and I’m the guy to help you master them. Limiting beliefs are limiting your success in real estate Even experienced agents need to clear out the clutter and focus on what’s important. The struggle for someone who has been in this business for a while is that the clutter isn’t on your calendar. The clutter is in your mind. The experience of a past failure creates the foundation for lies that will do nothing but hold you back. Telling yourself that a strategy doesn’t work just because you tried it once is a quick way to limit your success. Did you spend enough time? Did you execute your plan effectively? These are all questions an outside perspective can help you answer honestly. That’s where I come in. Let me help you tear down the limiting beliefs that are holding you back from the next level of real estate success. Complacency is killing your potential Les Brown once said that the richest places in the world are graveyards because of all of the unreached potential they contain. That statement is especially true for complacent real estate agents. Too many agents I know reach a point where their results start to outweigh their efforts and they get comfortable. They decide to ride that wave of easy business off into the sunset. I beg you my friend, resist that urge! If you let off the gas now you are missing the opportunity to grow personally and bless other people as a leader. I’ll have my microphones at the ready so come by and let’s gab. At least, I figure that should give her enough time to buy whatever she needs before we fly out of LAX Monday Morning. Fun fun, fun in the sun! Dia De Los Muertos in Puerto Vallarta Preparations are under way for the day of the Dead Celebrations or Dia de los Muertos, which take place right after the traditional Halloween in the states on the 31st of October, but in the states as well as in Mexico, Mexicans stretch out the celebrations out a little bit and in Mexico, Día de los Muertos is celebrated from the 31st to the 2nd of November. Anyway, there’s lots to be said about the upcoming celebrations throughout the Bajia, and I will be bringing you all of the activities planned for this very festive occasion in Puerto Vallarta. Actually, El Dia De Los Muertos, is the celebration that really kicks off the tourist season in Puerto Vallarta. Now speaking of next week, I will not have an episode of the podcast for you next week due to my planned travels to paradise. You just need to know that I’m not shirking my duties as podcast host, I’m just going to be busy getting you some of the best interviews and on the ground information you can shake a stick at. Or whatever you shake, stick, whatever. Just go ahead and shake it at it. A Day Trip to San Pancho [caption id="attachment_1709" align="aligncenter" width="1250"] San Pancho Map[/caption] A couple of weeks back, I got an email from Polly who wanted me to do an episode on going to San Pancho. Actually, Polly gave me a great review on iTunes, and she made a request, and now Polly, I’m going to grant your wish and take a day trip with you to San Pancho. Actually formerly known as San Francisco, San Pancho is just 4 kilometers north of the hippy town of Sayulita. Sayulita is located about 38 kilometers north of the Puerto Vallarta Airport. Approximately a 45 minute drive. Now I began my day trip at about 2 on a Saturday afternoon. I was on the Southside and looked for a bus to take me to Walmart. Okay, I know what you are thinking, Barry, aren’t we going to San Pancho? Yes, we are going to San Pancho, so instead of me telling you all of the intricacies of bus taking in Puerto Vallarta, let’s review with JR. I have a clip of a conversation I had with him back in January about taking buses in Puerto Vallarta. Let’s see what he says about catching one of those buses from Vallarta, to those beach towns north. JR, Take it away!!!! Link to JR's Maps Listen to The Podcast Okay, so I hopped on a bus that said Walmart on the windscreen and I told the driver that I wanted the bus to San Pancho. Quiero el bus a San Pancho. Which means, I want the bus to San Pancho. You can probably just say it in English, and the driver will most likely understand, but hey, learn the lingo. Write it down, practice it. So in this case, the driver did drop me off at the location JR talked about, the one at the beginning of the Libramiento. South, actually way south [caption id="attachment_1714" align="aligncenter" width="5312"] Tienda at The Puerto Vallarta Bus Stop South of Walmart[/caption] of Walmart. And he is right, I was able to get on the bus before the crowd did, and pretty much had my choice of seats. So the driver motioned to me when we got to the stop. I made sure I was sitting up front near him so he could give me the hi sign. So this place where you get dropped off has a tienda where you can buy drinks and stuff, and you walk a little south along the sidewalk and you will see busses lining up. Their destinations written on the windshields of the bus. Before you get on the bus, if you aren’t sure, just ask the driver. They will tell you how much to pay, and you pay them there. If you are planning on making several stops along the way, for instance if you want to stop for breakfast in Sayulita, then move on up north to San Pancho for Lunch, you pay in segments. There’s no day pass. Get it? So the busses are comfortable. Not air conditioned, but reclining seats, and the driver will play their favorite tunes as you travel along the coast, then cut across the Point. If you go to the website at www.puertovallartatravelshow,com, you will see the rout, and the towns you pass through on your way up to San Pancho. [caption id="attachment_1745" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Bus to San Pancho[/caption] You hit Bucerias, and just before you get to Cruz de Huanacaxtle, route 200 cuts inland, bypassing the Punta de Mita, and travels through a wooded jungle like [caption id="attachment_1740" align="alignleft" width="1000"] San Francisco/San Pancho Fruit Stand[/caption] area, well, it is a jungle out there, really, and eventually you arrive at the coast, in the town of Sayulita. You can get off here, and like JR said, the bus actually drops you off in the middle of town, so you can actually get off the bus right there, and start exploring the hippit dippie town of Sayulita. It’s colorful, and gringoized with lots of specialty shops, not just your typical Mexican souvenirs, although you will find that too. Great places to eat, and the surfing is all the rage. Although, use caution, there have been many reports of unclean waters there. Something about too many people and not sufficient facilities to properly treat raw sewage. So ask questions before entering the water, and use caution. But hey….we’re on our way to San Pancho right? We are going to stay on that bus, because we paid to get to San Pancho right? Right. The bus continues up the coast to the next stop which is San Pancho. The Bus Stops alongside the highway, at the intersection of Highway 200 and Avineda Tercer Mundo, or in English, Third World Avenue. Kinda has a lovely ring to it doesn’t it?. Humm. So the bus lets the passengers off at Third World Avenue where there is a huge Pemex station. You cross the highway, and follow the Third World road right to the beach. Like JR said, the walk is about a mile or so, and it takes you right to the beach. You will pass very colorful shops, hotels, B & B’s, Hostels, and restaurants as you walk down this road, and you will see the homes of the people of the town of San Pancho, on the streets behind these establishments. [caption id="attachment_1736" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] San Pancho[/caption] Now, if you don’t want to walk, just wait around for a taxi to take you into town if you like, but if you are in good enough shape, the walk is totally worth it. The closer you get to the beach, the more restaurants you will find, and shops and stuff, and when you get to the end of the road, it makes a T right into the beach. [caption id="attachment_1737" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] San Pancho, Nayarit[/caption] To your right and left you will find numerous beachfront eateries. Now unlike in Puerto Vallarta, this is a wide beach. Lots of sand. So there’s lots of room at this beach to stretch out. To your left, there is a lagoon, and the beach curves out to a rocky outcropping. To the right, the beach stretches for almost a mile. It’s a big beach, I’m telling you. So food and drink are abundant here at and near the beach. The waves are not the quality of Sayulita, but I’ve heard the water is cleaner to swim in. If you want to see a really cool video of San Pancho from the air, my buddy Dan The Flying Man Dimov has this wonderful YouTube video with him flying along in his Paramotor machine, along the coast in San Pancho. [embed]https://youtu.be/p-KEUtAGW8g[/embed] In fact, I’m going to be interviewing Dan on my visit to Puerto Vallarta next week, and I can’t wait to introduce you to him. He takes people up in the air. Tandem on his glider, so you have to check out the video, and definitely listen to the podcast when I air it in the coming weeks. Dan also has a wonderful video he shot the day of the full solar eclipse, along the coast over the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta. I’ll add that video too to the show notes so check that one out too. I can’t make up my mind which one I like best. You decide. [embed]https://youtu.be/moLff_OiPoI[/embed] I also have some screenshots thanks to Google Earth, showing the town, the bus drop-off spot and the path you will take into town, down Avenida Tercer Mundo. I just love that! So where do you eat? They have a great Bar-b-Que place called Mr. Ribs San Pancho. I couldn’t help myself, it smelled so good. I had pork ribs and [caption id="attachment_1726" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Mr Ribs[/caption] the fixings. Pretty darn good, and the people watching was great too. Then there is a branch of El Barracuda, run by the same group as in Vallarta. Las Palmas Bar and Grill is the biggest place right on the beach they have lots of loungers for you to sit on and sip an umbrella drink, and watch the people play in the sun, at the beach. There are lots of Mexican families playing at the beach, and of course, tourists too. Anyway, you won’t go hungry in San Pancho, or San Francisco. Actually, the town is called San Francisco, and the Beach is called San Pancho Beach, but everyone calls the whole place San Pancho, there are literally dozens of places to eat all around you. It’s pretty cool! [caption id="attachment_1729" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] El Barracuda, San Pancho[/caption] I spotted a doughnut lady, and made a beeline for her, and purchased a couple of yummy pastries which I happily munched and headed back up the road, back to highway 200 for my ride back to Vallarta. Once you get to the highway, go to the right and walk about 100 feet to where the busses stop to pick you up, and head back to Walmart, I mean Vallarta. Now bus rides in Puerto Vallarta never are ordinary. Every once in a [caption id="attachment_1746" align="alignright" width="300"] Singer on The Bus[/caption] while, the driver will let someone on the bus who will clear his or her throat and begin a soliloquy, in Spanish of course, and proclaim to their captive audience, we bus riders, their cause, whether it’s a sick family member, maybe they are out of a job and need to feed their family, maybe speak on behalf of a particular cause, and then at the end of their plea, and let me tell you, these guys are really good, I mean, well-spoken and practiced, they will work their way through the bus, hat in hand, collecting pesos from the riders, then, when the bus makes the next stop, they are out the back door of the bus. Sometimes these take longer than a stop or two. I had one where the driver let this guy on, dressed like a clown who literally went on and on for about 15 minutes. Oh my god! But on this ride home, the driver let on this guy you are hearing now. This guy had a jukebox item around his neck, and he sang to the music. He was a pro. He was a little guy, but he sang with such heart. I recorded it for you to listen to. Please indulge me as I play it for you, to get the flavor of the ride, home from San Pancho. [caption id="attachment_1718" align="alignleft" width="300"] Walmart in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1717" align="alignleft" width="300"] Walmart in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] So you go to Walmart or to the end of the line, and either take a cab back to your hotel, or a bus back, if you feel comfortable. Just remember, if you are going to the Southside, look for a bus that says Centro on it and not Pittial. Otherwise, you may go on one of those magical mystery tours that JR talks about in our episode about taking busue in Puerto Vallarta. And if you haven’t listened to that one, you really ought to have a look. Also, I have a copy of JR’s map that shows the bus stops that I talked about here. So, that’s the day-trip to San Pancho. Give yourself at least 5 hours total to take the bus back and forth, to get the flavor of the town, to get a bite to eat and a spot to drink, and maybe, just maybe have an opportunity to be serenaded by this guy. If someone would have told me back on June 15, 2015 that we were about to launch a podcast that would soar to the top of iTunes New & Noteworthy, that our email list would grow to over 20,000 people, that we would receive feedback every day from business owners who we have impacted in a positive way, that our message would now reach 105 countries around the world…and that all of the knowledge we collected in the last 18-months would turn into a book that a major publisher would want to buy and then publish…there is no way I would have believed that person. In fact, I might have run the other way. And yet, what I just shared with you is exactly what happened. And it happened because of you, Onward Nation. Because you downloaded episodes and then let us know how we could make them better. You emailed me, you hit us up on Twitter, you shared your thoughts on Facebook — and my team and I listened. We made adjustments and then you offered even more advice. So we pivoted again. And again. And then again. Now… Let’s continue the momentum that we started during last week’s solocast…Episode 396 that I entitled, “Get Your Hands Dirty” and we focused on two main lessons: 1) why and how you should jump into the trenches with your team — and the impact you getting your hands dirty — will have on your team And… 2) how to create your client avatar so you and your team focus your valuable time and attention toward the right customers. And as I walked you through the practical and tactical steps last week — the “in the trenches process” that you need in order to create your client avatar — I also made you a promise. I promised that last week’s solocast would be the first in a series of four tactical lessons you take and apply in order to fill your sales pipeline. So today’s solocast is my next step in fulfilling my promise. Today’s lesson is going to tactical and provide you with another opportunity to get your hands dirty working alongside your team. However, I am also going to push you to think differently before you dig into the tools. I am going to do that so you can be sure to get your mindset right — to get your head right — so you are ready to unleash your full potential. If you work through the client avatar exercise from last week without getting your mindset right — you may focus on clients who don’t push you — who will not challenge you to grow — you may focus on the ones who you think are safe — prospects who are lower hanging fruit — decision makers who operate at lower levels in the organization instead of the C-suite. Run from those thoughts, Onward Nation. I believe it was Albert Einstein who said, “The same thinking that got you and your business to your current level – is not the same thinking that is going to get you to where you want to go.” So you must push yourself to be open to the ideas I share with you – even if I challenge you – even if I make you feel uncomfortable from time-to-time – please know – that’s what a good mentor does – they help you see the path you need to take. For example…I can almost certainly guarantee that as you and I move our way through the lessons over the next several weeks…you may begin to think of challenges you expect to encounter if you were to implement what you learn. You may think to yourself… “That would never work in my industry.” “I can work on that when I have more time.” “I would put that into practice if only my team were up to the challenge.” “My sales have slumped because I have a couple of really tough competitors – or – our pricing is too high.” I am here to tell you – as a good mentor would – your key challenge – your key obstacle to having a vibrant, full sales pipeline heading into 2017 – with a steady stream of qualified prospects is not being blocked by any of these. Okay, so then what is blocking you from having a full sales pipeline? It’s you, Onward Nation! Yes, you. But how could I say such a thing? Please…just hear me out. We as business owners…we fall victim each day by asking ourselves really horrible questions like… “Am I good enough?” “Am I smart enough?” “Oh, that company over there would never want to do business with us because we are too small!” We tend to set ourselves up for failure before we ever start. We tell ourselves we can’t do something. The way we speak to ourselves — in our own heads — can be truly cruel at times. Instead…as you are building your client avatar…you need to get your mindset right…to eliminate the word “Can’t” from your vocabulary. Why do you need to eliminate this word – and these thoughts? Because this word is the root of the Imposter Syndrome – and if you don’t take aggressive action – the word will build a stronghold in your mind…and the Imposter Syndrome will keep you as its victim. The Imposter Syndrome is your one and only barrier to success – and it will keep your sales pipeline empty if you let it. Onward Nation — you are good enough – you are worthy of more – you have worked hard! Don’t let the Syndrome become a roadblock to your next level. In fact, next time you catch yourself asking yourself road-blocking questions…I want to you to apply a little success secret to push past the blockade. Here it is… “Decide to win – before – you ever start.” And that’s a powerful lesson I learned from Joanna Riley during Episode 324. She went from zero to being the largest shareholder in her company now worth over $800 million. Jo has accomplished much – but – it is because she learned at the age of 14 what it took to believe in herself – and that winning was as much about performance as it was deciding to win at the outset. I believe in you, Onward Nation – you are far more capable, amazing, awesome, wonderful, and beautiful than you give yourself credit for. And now I want to repeat the two warnings from last week because they still apply for today’s lesson. As we move through the steps…you may catch yourself saying… “Oh, I already know that…” If you catch yourself saying that – take a moment – and instead ask yourself – “But have I mastered it?” And then take it deeper by asking yourself, “Can I leverage it even greater that what I am currently doing?” Deal? Okay, so let’s jump in. The primary tool we will focus on today is LinkedIn. Why? Because LinkedIn is the platform where business-to-business deals get done – and – get done quickly. Plus, there are over 433 million business people on the planet who use LinkedIn. So it is highly likely that your top prospects are there – using LinkedIn – every day. And you should be, too, Onward Nation. LinkedIn members also may represent the right demographic – the right economic earning potential – that fits your ideal prospect or client avatar. So let’s begin…and in total…I am going to share tactical steps — or tools — you can use to find your client avatar in LinkedIn, build your Dream 50 list, expand your number of connections, and then reach out to your Dream 50 to generate leads to fill your sales pipeline. Step 1: Boost your LinkedIn profile. You need to do this by giving it a serious, deeply critical look. Does it include a deep summary description? Have you linked videos from your YouTube account? Do you have your experience section properly built out? And if the answer is “no” to any of these — you need to make immediate adjustments. Why? Think of your profile as your landing page within LNKD. If it’s not up to par — then prospects will bounce off your page and move on with their day. Step 2: Participate in LinkedIn’s Pulse publishing platform by sharing your long-form content at least once per week. Publishing to LNKD gives you the opportunity to share your expertise and deliver value to your connections – and – to boost credibility on the platform. Go to my LNKD profile for tangible examples that you can dissect and get some ideas. Step 3: expand your LNKD connections I encourage you to export your existing email list, import it into LinkedIn, and send connection requests. But why? Because with each new LNKD connection, your network of 1st degree, 2nd degree, and 3rd degree connections expands. This will give your team a larger network to search within for high-value prospects — your client avatar. For example, I have over 4,000 1st degree connections on LinkedIn, which equates to a lead gen network of approximately 17 million people for business development team here at Predictive ROI, my content marketing and lead gen agency. By expanding your connections, your will be able to “see” as many high-value prospects within LNKD as possible. Step 4: expand your email list! Now you should reverse the process from Step 3 and export your list of LNKD connections — and then — import the email addresses back into your email list. LinkedIn is the only social media platform that allows you to export the email addresses of your connections. This rinse and repeat cross-pollination will ensure yours prospects receive future content via multiple channels. Step 5: build your Dream 50 list Here is where you will take the details you identified regarding your client avatar using the recipe I shared with you in Episode 396 — and then apply it — to build your Dream 50 list using LinkedIn’s Advanced Lead Builder tool. The Advanced Lead Builder gives you the opportunity to conduct custom searches based on keywords, titles, industry, years of experience, employee size, geographic proximity to a zip code, and a variety of other variables. But…just a heads up…LNKD recently announced their decision eliminate a number of the searching options because not enough members were using them. Ugh. So we will have to wait and see what the revised version of Advanced Lead Builder will look like — I will keep you posted. Once you have your Dream 50 list compiled — you will be ready for Step 6, which is sending your InMail messages. InMail is kind of like LNKD’s version of email — except it is only available to premium members — you can only send 30 InMail messages per month without buying more credits — credits cost $10 each — and — the process cannot be automated…each InMail is sent to each recipient manually…one at a time. Yes, I know — it is time consuming…but…that is also why we often see response rates of 10-20 percent…because there is very little spam via InMail. You can go to Episode 298 of Onward Nation for our complete InMail template so you can swipe it and then customize the content for your business. It's all about noticing and returning back to the present moment, without judging yourself. That is what mindfulness and meditation basically is. They recently launched a partner plan. The platform I am using is firetalk.com which has the same functionality (give or take) as blab, and its free. You don't get the audio file (just the video). You can always "rip" the audio out of the video file. So far I like it, and will continue to use it going forward. Because of His Podcast Michael O'Connell Got a Book Deal. The Three Things Your Podcast Needs That Have Nothing to Do With Microphones, Downloads, or Hosting Today I want to talk about podcast success and the things you need to achieve. Here is the fun part I’m not talking about microphones, downloads, or hosting. While those are ingredients that you need to podcast, without these you are doomed. They are attitude, health, and support. The first thing is your expectations and/or attitude. I have people contact me weekly with dreams of getting into Apple’s New and Noteworthy and “making it big” (whatever that means). Per Rob Walch of Libsyn, fifty percent of podcasters get less than 160 downloads, and fifty percent get above. I feel this is mainly due to the thousand plus podcasts launching every week. They are just starting to build their audience. I come from a training background where if I had twenty students in my class, my hands were going to be full. When you have 160 listeners, that would equal eight classrooms. In the last building I worked in, that would be an entire floor of classrooms filled with people who want to listen to you. People who could consume AM, FM, CD, Sirius, Local and Cable channels, HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Audible, etc. They choose to listen to you. So how do you get your attitude straight? You have to be able to answer the question, “Why are you starting a podcast?” For me, I love to help people. That’s what I worked in training departments for 20+ years. Now, let’s not fool ourselves. I like making money as well. However, when I have someone come to me too scared to launch a podcast, and I later I hear them cry over the phone as they see their podcast in iTunes, it is hard to put a price on that. The other reason you need to know you “Why” is so you can create content that fits in with your goal. If the purpose of your podcast is to position yourself as a leader in your field, then maybe you should use a Q&A format. What if you’re in just to make money. You’re in it to boost sales. Remember when you first start out you don’t have an audience, so if the goal is to convert your audience to sales, the first thing you need to do is focus on getting an audience, and second how to convert them. The length of time it takes to achieve this is why Podcasting is often said to have a slow burn. You have to have an audience before you can sell to your audience. Also, you better be willing to podcast for free, because when you start out, you are. In fact, you’re losing around $30 a month in expenses. The second thing is your health. Certain gurus love to tell you to stay up until three in the morning, get up at 6 and go to work. If you really want it, you will do this. If you don’t do this, well then (LOSER) you don’t really want it right? You just need to dig down deeper. After all, it’s not going to come to you; you have to HUSSLE DOWN and GO GET IT TIGER! No for the record, you do have to do the work, but killing yourself to live is not a great option. I did this for a while. Here is what it produced. A crappy attitude because I constantly felt “behind.” That I wasn’t working hard enough, and that was I was doing wasn’t good enough, and that I need to sacrifice more. A crappy product. I make enough typos when I’m awake, let alone when I’m sleep deprived. I was struggling with energy, and creativity because my body wanted something. It was called sleep. I recently lost 30 lbs. You know one of the key ingredients? Sleep. I now get at least 6, typically 7 hours of sleep a night. WHAT? THAT IS INSANE. No, what it is, is a strategy to be more productive because you’re not doing rookie mistakes because you can’t keep your eyes open. I can focus. You have the attention span of a puppy hopped up on red bull. The other thing it did was mess up my back. Countless time I would wake up at my desk with my head pointing down in some weird position as my body was in some strange position sleeping in a chair. Great, my hustle would now slow me down cause I can’t stand up straight. I gained weight. Why? Because I was BUSY, I had THINGS TO DO, so I would go get some “fast food” and slam my Double Mystery Meat, Fries, and a Coke. Never realizing by the time I drove to the Burger Hut, waited in the drive through, and got home to eat my luke-warm home slop, I could’ve cooked something much more healthy at home. Eating fast food is like pouring the cheapest gas you can find in your car. It doesn’t burn well, and it leaves a residue in your engine. Well, in this case, you body doesn’t know what to do with strange chemistry abortion called fast food that tricks your mind into thinking it’s not full so it can dump enough sugar down you face to light you up like a Christmas tree. You will notice on ingredient labels they don’t put the percentage of sugar contained in that Starbucks (because your morning Late probably has your over your daily limit already). Poor nutrition leads to you getting sick, and tired. Which eventually leads you to be sick and tired of being sick and tired. Now instead of being upbeat, creative, and inspired you are tired, unmotivated, potentially cranky, and/or depressed. Now because you’re tired and cranky (and maybe depressed), you will probably notice your family and friends don’t want to be around you. Being tired, sick, and cranky leads to: The third thing you need to have a successful podcast: Support. When your friends and family (going forward let’s just say family) don’t support your podcasting efforts, it will suck whatever energy you have left in your body. It is often the final nail in the coffin. You can’t demand support. Demanding support often can lead to resentment on the person waiting in the wings. When you FORCE someone to support you, they aren’t supporting you because they believe in you, or they want to. They are supporting you because they HAVE to. If someone puts a gun to my head forces me to say “Soundcloud is the best podcasting platform on the planet” I would do it because I like breathing, but would that really be support? When your family is complaining about the time, money and effort you are putting into your show it creates stress. Stress is not a great fertilizer for creativity. Some people strive under pressure, but many have a hard time concentrating. They can’t “be in the now” because they are too busy waiting for the shoe to drop. So those are the problems. How do you solve them? For Health Do the Following: Batch cook food. For me, I buy a family pack of chicken thighs and dump them into a pressure cooker. I then package them up and put them in the refrigerator. When I need a quick snack, I throw them into the microwave, and while I’m eating the chicken I microwave a vegetable, and I’m done in 10 minutes. It’s true fast food. The pressure cooker requires no overseeing. For me, I look at what time I’m getting up in the morning. For me, that is 7:30 AM as I have to be at work by 8:30. If I want seven hours sleep, I have to be in bed by 12:30. I know I need to exercise for at least 30 minutes that means takes me back to 12:00. Now Let’s Take This Thought into the Support Area I need to eat and spend some time with my family. Let’s call that two hours. That would be 10 PM. If I arrive home at 6 PM, I would have FOUR FREE HOURS. Now my family isn’t going to want to eat at 10 PM. So from 6-8PM I enjoy my family. I then spend 30 minutes exercising. It’s not 8:30. I have three hours and thirty minutes to work on my podcast, 30 minutes to brush my teeth and say goodnight. Realize something in this scenario. Your family gets 2.5 hours; your podcast got three hours and thirty minutes. If you did this every day, your family is going to feel short-changed. Setting a schedule is also where you need to go back and set expectations with your family. Can you pull this plan off two times a week (giving you potentially 6 hours of podcasting time)? Are they willing to support this? If not, what ar they willing to support? It may turn out that you might want to consider doing a shorter show instead of an hour long show. In the event you make some money with your podcast, give some to your spouse to do whatever they want. Now not only are you benefiting from your podcast but so are they. Make family time just that. Turn your phone off and concentrate. What happens if you run out of time? For me, I have found (unless it’s a deadline of a customer) most items in podcasting don’t have a time limit. The research you wanted to do tonight, can probably wait until tomorrow. That new tool you wanted to play with, can probably wait until tomorrow. 99.9% of whatever you wanted to do will still be there in the morning. I didn’t believe it, but I now can say 100% it is true. Quit the following actions to boost your attitude: Quit looking at other podcasters income and downloads. Much like golf or bowling, in podcasting, you compare yourself to your last game. Realize the gear you have will probably do just fine. Microphone envy leads to people spending money on things they don’t need which leads to spouses resentment. Avoiding resentment leads to people sneaking things into the house. You are developing bad habits. Obsessing over stats. Looking at them does not make them grow. Reach out and network with similar podcasts. They know exactly how you feel. Having someone “In the trenches” with you can help. Here are some tips to help with productivity Used web-based services like Evernote, Onenote, Google Docs, etc. This way if you find yourself trapped somewhere, you can do that research on your phone or tablet. You can spend your lunch hour doing research instead of reading the outdated magazines in the break room. I love todoist.com for keeping track of things with deadlines, and you can easily make items directly from websites (thanks to a browser extension) and from within Gmail. So set your expectations for your podcast, and set the expectations of your family. Protect your health by getting enough sleep, eating the right things, and exercising. Protect your family by giving them the time they need. If you have lots of energy and support, but your attitude is crap, it will hurt you creatively, and you may lose your motivation. If you are motivated but are sick all the time, then don’t have the energy to get behind the mic - even if your family supports you. If you have a great attitude, feel great, but have to deal with an upset family, your podcast may be okay, but your life is spiraling down the drain. Attitude, Health, and Support. Simple, but not easy. Here it is, folks! A podcast! We’re finally talking about the defense this week, after a couple of weeks of delays and postponements. Given the events of the past couple of weeks, we felt it best to postpone recording at the time, and then life happened. We take the first few minutes to discuss the conviction of Sam Ukwuachu and the brouhaha that immediately ensued. Don’t worry, we don’t spend long on it but given the fact that we were set to record this defense preview podcast the night of the conviction, it wouldn’t do to not discuss it in the slightest. At the time, we felt that it would be incredibly tone deaf to record a podcast previewing the defense, and I think that was the right call. Then, last week just got away from us. We tried to lay down some audio and again decided that everything was too fresh to record. BUT, we’re back and we’re ready to talk defense! Before we get into it, we HAD to spend a couple minutes discussing the superb “appetizer” we had last weekend in North Dakota State vs. Montana. If you didn’t catch this game on Saturday, you missed a wildly entertaining football game full of twists, turns, offense, and healthy doses of both Brent Musbergerisms AND Jesse Palmerisms (hey guys how’s your cardio). A good time was had. Now Let’s Talk Some Defense! We’re starting off with the big question. Everyone wants to talk about the corners and safeties, but we’re looking at the issue in a more holistic manner, examining the question of pass defense as a whole. A successful pass defense combines more than just corners and safeties turning their head to the ball. It involves a concerted effort to pressure the quarterback by both the defensive line and linebackers, PLUS the coverage aspects that we’ve talked about ad nauseam this offseason.
