On the warm, lazy afternoons of San Francisco, Nayarit, a beach town in Mexico affectionately known as San Pancho, Romeo made his rounds. A golden silhouette trotted along the shore, his paws leaving fleeting imprints on the sand before the waves gently erased them. He was a creature of both habit and freedom, the kind of dog who didn't just belong to one family but to the entire town. Romeo wasn't a stray. He had a family, people who ensured he was well-fed and cared for, but he was also a social butterfly of the canine world, greeting tourists with...Article Link

In a city that gives the cold shoulder to working class people and creative folks that aren't backed by trust funds or tech money, Medicine for Nightmares Bookstore opens their doors to those who still care about the artistic soul of San Francisco. It's a place where you can walk in and be greeted with a warm "Hey hermano, Hey prima, Hey familia," and strike up a conversation with the booksellers, fellow readers or local writers that frequent the Mission shop. It's a venue where folks can read to a supportive inter generational audience, a gallery space showcasing artists of color, a community sanctuary to just stop in and exhale a deep breath from the chaos of the city. It's a vibe that is tended to and nurtured by co-owner and poet Josiah Luis Alderete. Coming of age in San Francisco in the 90s, he became immersed in the vibrant literary scene bourgeoning in the Mission. "People say North Beach is the heart of a literary scene in San Pancho or in San Francisco, and I'd say, nah, man, it's the Mission," he muses. As bookstores and cafes from that era have shuttered in the neighborhood, Alderete is helping keep the Mission poetry scene alive through organizing and booking local writers to read and share their work at the 24th street bookstore. In our conversation back in March 2022, Josiah shared literary history of the Mission, why Axolotl's show up in his pocho poems, and how his work is a form of memory keeping. Read the transcript

Anchor Brewing San Pancho Mexican lager Dane Volek from Anchor Brewing calls in to Brew Ha Ha with Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras to talk about their new San Pancho Mexican lager. Dane is the new Brewmaster at Anchor Brewing, so he has the job that used to belong to Brew Ha Ha founding father Mark Carpenter. Joe and Matt Tachis from Indian Valley Brewing in Novato are also in the studio today during Dane's call. Their full interview with Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras is available on their own podcast page, here. San Pancho is a Mexican style lager with natural lime flavors. They did some test releases in the brew house which went well, and the folks around the brew house liked it too. The label on the can is inspired by Mexican mural art. The recipe begins with pale malt and some flaked corn and makes a refreshing dry beer. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their Windsor location. Click the logo to visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. Anchor Brewing is also where Herlinda's guests from Poland did a collaboration brew last January, mentioned in this Brew Ha Ha episode. Dane describes the Baltic Porter they made that day, using Anchor's yeast. Marcin Malecki and Artur Napuripski of Maryensztadt Brewery in Poland have invited Dane to Poland to do another collaboration there. Visit our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. For this baseball season, Anchor Brewing is working with the San Francisco Giants. Their beer is at the ballpark and they might do an Anchor Day promotion this year. We also hear about the artist who did the San Pancho Mexican Lager beer label who is from Mexico City. The label is also inspired by the kind of mural art in the Mission district of San Francisco. They may also do this kind of artwork on their IPA. Anchor is getting ready for the busy summer season. The public taproom is open Wednesdays through Sundays. They have 24 taps which are about half their usual commercial beers and the others serve many other smaller batches and experiments that they also produce.

Episode 2 was recorded with A very special guest after the close of a retreat it was recorded in San Pancho in the evening so you can hear some birds, crickets, and wildlife Scott was given 90 days to live in December from a terminal cancer diagnosis this retreat ended in April. While there is currently no evidence to suggest that psilocybin has any curative properties related to cancer several studies do indicate that the experience it offers can help with the existential distress related to a serious diagnosis like this one. It is also our policy to never record anyone on a day where they have had mind altering substances. The purpose of this episode is to share the significant humanity in the depth of this story. Scott shares how psilocybin brought him to a realization that we cannot negotiate the terms of our lives. In his unique, inspiring style, he tells us about his retreat experience, and how ultimate surrender and acceptance gave him courage and strength to change his own perception of his life and his diagnosis.
One of the worst parts of outdoor recreational activities for women is being able to find clothes that are made for women, by women. Until you discover Carve Designs. The idea for Carve began on a surf trip to San Pancho, Mexico. As two lifelong friends, Jennifer Hinton and Thayer Sylvester, lounged in a hammock waiting for the waves to roll back in, they lamented how hard it was to find boardshorts that could keep up with them – real women with real bodies and a real passion for adventure. And just like that, Carve Designs was born. It began as a surf apparel company selling rashguards and boardshorts in 2003, but has since grown into a complete beach lifestyle brand; offering surf, swim, balance, and lifestyle clothing. The sustainable Carve Designs styles represent their spirit: fun-loving, hardworking, confident, and inclined to get where they want to go.

Sallie Mitchell, formerly of Casa Mar Azul vacation rental in San Pancho, Mexico knows what it's like to plan for a dream, live with the realities of that dream, and ultimately exit the dream in a positive fashion. Onwards to the next chapter. In this episode Sallie and Matt explore the idea of finding your guest type and catering to them, action items to build an exit strategy and dip into Sallie's fears of an arms race in guest expectations. We have come to think of Sallie's business savvy as the quintessential rent by owner. With the scope of responsibilities and demands of the job greater today than it's ever been, listen carefully for both the compass that Sallie used to make hard decisions and the framing or presentation of her choice that landed clearly and comfortably in the hands of her guests, employees, and even friends. More than anything, Sallie champions the idea that if vacation rentals FEELS like something you want to do, would be good at, would mean something…that you should take that leap even though it may seem terrifying. At least in Sallie's case, hospitality has made her world larger, her life richer, and her stories hilarious to boot!
Founder and director of the Awakening in the Dream Group, Rocky first took ibogaine for poly substance addiction interruption in Dec 2003. Trained as a provider at the Ibogaine Association he worked in the underground as a provider from his home. In 2006 he moved to San Pancho Nayarit Mexico to open the Dream House, a medical licensed detox center, where he conducted treatments for 10 years and began the first integration program in combination to primary Detox. Currently Rocky and Asha are doing sessions in their home in San Miguel de Allende like the old days bringing people into a family setting to work with Ibogaine and Iboga extracts with the same medical safety standards as San Pancho. Rocky had been a flooring contractor for 25 years with 20 years of methamphetamine addiction on and off. Ibogaine was the breakthrough which resolved both his Heroin and Methamphetamine dependence and inspired a new career in service as a provider creating a new modality of treatment for drug dependence and psychological issues.

Dan Dimov is a Wedding Photographer in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. He Talks about his other love, Paramotoring. He teaches Travelers how to Parasail in Puerto Vallarta. Tandem flying as well as lessons. Dan combines his photography talents with his love of flight. Watch videos of Dan Dimov flying over Puerto Vallarta, and San Pancho, Mexico. [caption id="attachment_2171" align="aligncenter" width="769"] Dan Dimov, Puerto Vallarta[/caption] Listen to The Podcast Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The El Dorado Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into the ever so romantic Vista Grill with those dramatic views of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course, at La Palapa you can enjoy that same view of the Los Muertos Pier all day long for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! This week I have a very special guest, he is Dan Dimov, and Dan is a wedding photographer and he flies around Puerto Vallarta using a Paramotor, but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 28th of December 2017. Today, December 28 is actually Mexico’s equivalent of April Fools Day. It’s called Dia Los Santos Inocentes, and on this day, do not, I repeat, do not lend anything to anyone in Mexico. It’s said that on this day, the 28th of December, one can borrow something, and not have to return it. In fact, in the 19th century, elaborate schemes were concocted to get those who were not aware of the date to lend them things on this day. So, remember, this day folks. If successful, the victorious prankster would send a note to the lender and a gift of sweets or small toys in memory of the children killed by Herod with the note saying, "Innocent little dove who allowed yourself to be deceived, knowing that on this day, nothing should be lent.” The tradition developed into a day of pranks in general. By the way, it even includes newspapers printing false wild stories on that day. Hey, wait, don’t they do that everyday? Yet I digress. This special practice is also celebrated online as well in recent years. Ha, No Duh! In Puerto Vallarta, there are going to be two evenings of fireworks. The Mexican people really love fireworks and in Puerto Vallarta with the 2nd Festival de Pirotecnia Luminia, a world-class fireworks show on the 30th and 31st. There will be concerts on the Malecon beginning at 7, and both the 30th and the 31st a huge firework exhibition that will blow you away. 20 minutes each night, plus, all of the hotels, the restaurants, the local neighborhood celebrations, wow, it is incredible. Given the fact that Puerto Vallarta is going to be at peak capacity for new years eve, it’s going to be quite a couple of days. If yo aren’t in Vallarta now, and you don’t have reservations…good luck. I have links to the events on the Malecon in the show notes for this episode of the show. http://www.banderasnews.com/1712/nb-vallarta-fireworks-fest-dec-30-31.htm [caption id="attachment_2083" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Meet and Greet Jan 9[/caption] A couple of reminders, I will have my microphones at JR’s Meet and Greet at Kelly’s Pour Favor Cookhouse and Saloon, on Tuesday January 9th at 5:30 in the afternoon. Stop by and tell us what the heck you are doing in paradise. And like I said last week, if you are a local Puerto Vallarta business, please stop in and give a pitch to our audience and as I’ve said before, we always have a great time at JR’s Meet and greet, so if you are going to be in town, stop in and let’s talk. If you are too shy, that’s okay. Just stop in and say hi. [caption id="attachment_2117" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Table in Front of Cuates y Cuetes[/caption] Also, I told you about my plan to set up my microphones on a table on the beach in front of Cuates y Cuetes, and inviting passersby to stop by, and talk about what they are doing in paradise. The date and time for that is Thursday January 4th at 2 PM. So, if you are in town and want to say hello, I’ll buy you a beer, I’ll even order you some chips and guacamole if you will sit down with me and tell me what you are doing in paradise. Do you have a Puerto Vallarta Story you want to share with my listeners, I would like to hear it and so would all of my listeners too, so stop by and let’s talk. Hey, I’m offering Beer and Guack guys. It doesn’t get any better than that. Just sayin’. [caption id="attachment_2122" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Cuates y Cuetes Cam[/caption] So remember Thursday, January 4th at 2:00 PM till 4:00 in the afternoon. Come on down and let’s talk over some guac. Next week, I will have a show, from Puerto Vallarta. I’m not really sure what it’s going to be, but stay tuned, I promise it will be a special podcast. I’ll do my best to get it out in time, but hey, cut me some slack, I’ll be working in Paradise. Okay let’s get to our interview. [embed]https://youtu.be/moLff_OiPoI[/embed] A couple of months ago, I told you about seeing a YouTube video of this guy, gliding around Puerto Vallarta on a motorized contraption, a parachute with a big fan on the back. And this guy was celebrating the solar eclipse and the beauty of Puerto Vallarta at the same time. He was full of enthusiasm and energy. His video intrigued me, so I contacted him, and asked if he would come on the show, and he agreed. His name is Dan Dimov, Dan the Flying Man. Traveling to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico with Children is Easy with Proper Planning and the Right Information, There are Many Activities in and Around Puerto Vallarta to Keep Children Busy and Happy. I have an interview with listeners David and Lucia Garcia from Miami, Florida. They tell us about all of the fun activities available in Puerto Vallarta. Ziplining, Swimming with Dolphins, snorkeling, kayaking and more. Listen to The Podcast Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be [caption id="attachment_195" align="alignright" width="300"] La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta Mexico[/caption] introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. This week we have a couple of listeners, David and Lucia Garcia, from Miami Florida who are going to tell us about traveling with children in Puerto Vallarta, but before we get to that, let’s see what’s happening this week, the 13th of December 2017. Subscribe On iTunes & Leave a Good Review Subscribe on Android With Spreaker Coffee Lovers Chance to Set a World Record in Puerto Vallarta I found this article in the PVDN, if you are in town this weekend, you may want to join in the fun…. The Coffee Fest Puerto Vallarta, to be held on December 16, will be the event in which the city will seek to impose a new brand of people gathering for one purpose, drinking coffee. The Germans currently have the Guinness Record of the most people drinking coffee at the same time, achieved on August 30, 2009 when 8,162 people gathered at the Jugendpark in Cologne to drink cold coffee. Although it is believed that a subsequent meeting in Colombia brought together more than 12,000 people, it was not verified and opened the doors for the organizers in Puerto Vallarta, who hope to summon 10 thousand coffee enthusiasts to defeat, at least in this regard, the Germans, and impose a new record. If you want to be part of this event, you must register at www.coffeefestpuertovallarta.com and go to the Malecón of Puerto Vallarta at 5:00 p.m. on December 16th. The event is completely free. https://www.vallartadaily.com/news/puerto-vallarta/puerto-vallarta-coffee-fest/ Puerto Vallarta Travel Show One Year Anniversary The one-year anniversary of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show is coming up at the end of the month, and I’ve been planning this upcoming years shows, and I must say, I’m excited about year two, but I want your suggestions also. Who would you like me to interview? Where would you like me to visit? What would you like to know about Puerto Vallarta that you already don’t know about? Email me at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com, click on the contact us tab and send me a message. You can also find me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/puertovallartatravelshow/, Twitter at https://twitter.com/PVTravelShow and our new YouTube Channel. You can send me a message via any one of those methods and I will get your suggestions so I have all those links to all those social media contacts in the show notes of this episode so reach out to me and send me an idea. Where will I be going next year? Think road trips boys and girls. Up into the Sierras to San Sebastian del Oeste for a daytrip. I will take you on a cool day trip to El Tuito, Mayto and Tehualmixtle to the South. Then we are going to go north for a couple of daytrips. One to Rincón de Guayabitos, then down to Lo de Marcos, San Francisco better known as San Pancho, Sayulita. Another to Punta de Mita, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle and Bucerias. It’s going to be a great year as I said, but I need your help so let’s see how you do. [caption id="attachment_819" align="aligncenter" width="409"] Pour Favor Puerto Vallarta[/caption] Now I have a couple of events planned. First, I will have my microphones at JR’s Meet and Greet at Kelly’s Pour Favor Cookhouse and Saloon, on Tuesday January 9th at 5:30 in the afternoon. Stop by and tell us what the heck you are doing in paradise. And if you are a local Puerto Vallarta business, please stop in and give a pitch to our audience. I promise I’ll be nice. Really. Anyway, we always have a great time at JR’s Meet and greet, and by the way, they just opened a rooftop section at Pour Favors. It’s very nice. So if you are going to be in town, stop in and let’s talk. If you are too shy, that’s okay. Just stop in and say hello. [caption id="attachment_2083" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Meet and Greet Jan 9[/caption] Also, I’m planning on setting up at a table on the beach in front of Cuates y cuetes, or Langostinos, and inviting passers by to stop by, and talk about what they are doing in paradise. I’ll have a time and date for you next week, so stay tuned for that. But if you are planning on being in [caption id="attachment_50" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Cuates y Cuetes Webcam[/caption] Vallarta the first 2 weeks of January, listen up next week for the time and stop on by and sit with me on the beach in front of Cuates y Cuetes. And those of you who are at home, well maybe you can catch us on the beach with the assistance of the webcam. And if you don’t know already, [caption id="attachment_2117" align="alignright" width="300"] Table in Front of Cuates y Cuetes[/caption] if you go to my website at www.Puertovallartatravelshow.com, at the top of the page you will find the PV webcam page. Click it and check out all the cool webcams I have there from all over the Bahia de Banderas. I even have a link on the page that gives you the time that sun will be setting in Puerto Vallarta. You can actually plan ahead, every day and catch a Puerto Vallarta Sunset every day of the year. Right from the comfort of your very own bark-o-lounger. Really. Lots of people do, every day. You should try it. It’s lots of fun. Mix yourself a cocktail why don’t you and just pretend you are in paradise. At least, until you can get there in person that is. Okay, lets get to our guests, and to our interview. I first came to Vallarta in December of 1984. I had just met my wife, them my girlfriend, and we would return to Puerto Vallarta almost every year after that. Then we had our first child and we didn’t let that deter us one bit. We took Zachary with us when he was 3 months old. We stayed at a timeshare property, Villa de Palmar. It was a condo. We felt that the set-up was perfectly geared for a family traveling with child. Kitchen separate bedroom from the living area. A restaurant on the property. Pool beach, everything we needed. The property in in the Hotel zone. We rented a jeep for our stay and had the baby seat strapped in, ready for our next adventure. I recall one occasion when we were looking for a place to eat late one evening, and we stopped at Daiquiri Dicks. The ladies at the door asked us if they could look after the baby while we ate. Really? Well, we handed him over, and had the most enjoyable, carefree dinner of the trip. Not once did we even wonder what had become of Zachary. One day, the baby was crying and crying. I’m thinking for about an hour. And we were both fit to be tied. Then, out of nowhere, a little Mexican lady came up, and speaking to me in Spanish, told us what to do. We handed her the baby, and I don’t know what she did, but she had the magic. Three and a half years later, we returned to Puerto Vallarta with two boys this time. Zachary and little brother Jake. This time we stayed at the La Jolla de Mismaloya, now, the Barcello, down at Mismaloya Beach, 20 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta. The hotel had an all-inclusive option, but we opted to take care of the dining options ala Carte. A combination of eating in and taking a bus into town to eat out. We really had a wonderful time except for losing Jake. Go figure, the day we leave, we lose the kid. We were packed and ready to take a cab to the airport when we were distracted while loading the luggage into the cab, we turn around, and our 2-and-a-half-year child is gone. Just vanished into thin air. Well, panic set in. Especially when you consider there were all these pools, fountains and other bodies of water scattered all over the property. For about 15 minutes we scoured the property, asking along the way if anyone had seen a cute little boy with blond ringlets wander by. Finally, Debra found him, not far from where we were standing, waiting for the cab, upstairs above the lobby, being entertained by a member of the staff. Whew, that was a close one. Great way to end a perfect trip for sure right? When you take your children to Puerto Vallarta, keep in mind, if you are planning on bring a stroller, make it a very light weight foldable one. [caption id="attachment_2097" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] The Garcia Family in Puerto Vallarta[/caption] There are, especially in old town, uneven sidewalks, sidewalks with stairs built in, high curbs and cobblestone streets. You will be doing a whole lot of lifting and carrying of you stroller for sure. Also, if you usually travel with your child in a child safety seat in the car, you will need to determine what type of seat you will be bringing for your trip to strap into a taxi or an Uber ride. If you need anything baby related, food, formula, diapers, anything, you will be able to find it in Puerto Vallarta. They have Walmart, Sam’s Club, Costco, Mega, Ley’s Soriana, the corner markets. One thing you will be able to find in Mexico, that’s baby supplies. All inclusive resorts, at least the ones that allow kids, usually have kid clubs and activities for the little ones. You will need to do your homework and make sure before you book a trip with junior, to see what’s available at the property you are looking at of course. I was looking at my twitter feed a couple of weeks back and say a group of tweets directed at me from a couple of listeners, David and Lucia Garcia. They were in Puerto Vallarta for the first time and they were with their kids. I contacted them and they shared some of their pictures with me and I just had to have them on the show to tell us about their experiences in Vallarta, with their two young daughters. So let’s go right now to Miami Florida where I sent my trusty microphone, and talk with listeners David and Lucia Garcia, and hear about what they did in Paradise with their kids. An Interview With Natasha Moraga of Tile Park, Puerto Vallarta, also known as El Parque De Los Azulejos. We talk about her Project to Restore and Tile Lazaro Cardenas Park in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. [caption id="attachment_1536" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Art Rendering Parque de Azulejos[/caption] Listen to The Podcast Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! This week I have a very important guest, and I know you will love her. She’s Natasha Moraga, and she is going to tell us about her newest project, El Parque de los Azulejos, in Lazaro Cardenas Park on the Southside of town in Puerto Vallarta, but first, let’s see what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, this week the 24th of October 2017. Subscribe On iTunes & Leave a Good Review Subscribe on Android With Spreaker [caption id="attachment_1573" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Natasha Moraga, Artist-Muralist[/caption] I just returned from a very quick visit to Vallarta and boy have I got some great shows for you for the rest of the year. Anyway, it seems the weather has turned. Somebody turned off the rain spigot and for the entire time I was there, not a drop of rain, and although it’s still hot like in the 90’s, the humidity is beginning to come down some, so, looks like mother nature is delivering on time once again, and cooler temps and lower humidity is just around the corner. Now, last week we didn’t have a show because of my travels to paradise, truly a working vacation you guys, but I did hear from one of my listeners my buddy Bob, the Photographer from Kamloops Canadia, who told me that they couldn’t download my San Pancho Day Trip and Interview with Cassandra Shaw podcast, so I checked it out and low and behold, he was right, so I made the correction and fixed the audio players on the webpage, so if you happened to have missed the podcast with Cassandra and the daytrip to San Pancho, check it out again. It’s up and running at Puertovallartatravelshow.com. And by the way, I’ve noticed that many of you listen directly from my website, and that’s cool, but you can find the show, if you have an iPhone or an iPad, using the purple Podcast application that every iPad and iPhone has built right in, and if you are an android user, you can get the Spreaker App, Stitcher, and download the show from your phone or mobile device. I’ll add some links to the shownotes so you can see what I’m talking about. In fact, I’m thinking about adding a page to show how to consume the podcast. Maybe in the next few weeks so I’ll tell you when that happens so you can have a look for yourselves. Okay…. Now last week at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse we had a meet and greet with microphones. JR and I were there with about 15 of you listeners and it was a great time. I got a chance to meet my buddy Debbie, Cheap Debbie from Canadia was there with her lovely daughter Tessa, and Tessa’s handsome boyfriend, Enrique, who is a great chef, a Vallartense, a Vallarta Native. They were so much fun I have to tell you. Actually, Debbie and I were so busy out-cheaping each other during the whole meet and greet. We actually determined that I was just as cheap as she is. Actually, cheaper. [embed]https://youtu.be/JXwqHRYteC0[/embed] I told her about the condo I stayed at via Airbnb and I have to say, I really liked the place. It was quiet, except for well, the building that is going on on the Southside, I had that to contend with during the day, but the views were great, there was airconditioning and a pool, two balconies, comfortable bed, for $65 a night. Now you all know that is kind of expensive for me, I usually stay in the 30-40 dollar a night digs, but this time I was splurging because I was bringing my Debbie along,. If you have been following along, you know of my plan to spring the trip on her just a couple of days before, just to give her time to shop and pack, and well, she didn’t go! Let me explain….Anyway, those in attendance didn’t want to talk on the podcast. Such shyness abounds among you listeners I swear. I did have a couple of women who stopped by to pitch their new Wine Concierge Business they just launched in Puerto Vallarta, Vanusa Pedroso and Natalia Castro, so let’s go to that interview right now, just to give you the flavor of the meet and greet. [caption id="attachment_1804" align="alignleft" width="1000"] Uncork Mexico[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1806" align="aligncenter" width="637"] Vanusa + Nataloa[/caption] Now the band was just getting ready to kick off a set, so you are most likely going to hear some of that too, but let’s get to the interview right now shall we?... Link to Uncork Mexico.com Listen to The Podcast Nice ladies with an idea that they are hoping will take off in Paradise. I have the links and all their information in the show notes to this episode of the podcast, so check them out. [embed]https://youtu.be/rPT_sFYgdiI[/embed] The band that was warming up was a group called the La Trez Cuatroz, and if you remember the interview I had with Miranda and Reid, from Monzon Brewing Company, they told us about the band that did the benefit concert to help in Mexican Earthquake Relief, well, they were the band warming up and they were great. I introduced myself to the guys and we have an interview planned with these three great musicians who really know the bay, really know how to have a great time and will have all kinds of suggestions for all of you listeners. That will be coming up in January just in time for the high season. So La Trez Cuartoz, spelled with a "z" at the end. They rock you guys! That will be a great interview. La Trez Cuartoz Facebook Page [caption id="attachment_1779" align="aligncenter" width="994"] Dia De Los Muertos by Valeria Almaraz[/caption] Now next week I will be talking about all the things that are planned for Dia de Los Muertos celebrations all along the bay, and there will be many so stay tuned for that, next Tuesday Halloween Day. If you want information as to what is coming up before hand, go to the show notes and I will have a link to the events planned, but if you can wait, I will be talking about that on Halloween, next week! Let’s get to the show. Lazaro Cardenas Park in Puerto Vallarta is located on the southside of town, a block off of the beach. I have one of JR’s maps in the shownotes to allow you to see where the park is. [caption id="attachment_1782" align="aligncenter" width="856"] JR's Map of The Southside[/caption] The park, actually sits atop of an underground parking structure. For a little history, that park didn’t always sit on a parking structure, it was a big [caption id="attachment_1538" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Art Rendering Parque de Azulejos[/caption] place of contention in the early 2000’s. The city was looking for a place to build a parking area to relieve the massive parking issues on the south side. Actually it was finally in 2006, after many years or wrangling and negotiating and protests and ecological studies and delays and delays, the eventual removal of some large parotta trees that were growing in the park, the former Lazaro Cardenas Park, a really beautiful park was dug up, a big hole was dug and a subterranean garage built with 178 parking spaces, then the hole was topped with a new park, complete with [caption id="attachment_1802" align="alignright" width="300"] Boys and Burro Sculpture[/caption] benches, a pavilion, and planters. And today, the park is used for open farmers markets, Taco festivals, Zumba Classes in the morning, it has the classic sculpture by Jim Demetrio of the boys and the Burro. It is a wonderful public space. But it has over the years, fallen into both repair and disrepair. Every once and a while The Puerto Vallarta Garden Club gets in there and spruces the place up, but those projects although welcome, are short lived. The benches are showing signs of wear and tear, They are cracking under the tropical sun with rusting rebar being exposed to the elements, ensuring even a more rapid decline and deterioration. It’s a fact that Lazaro Cardenas Park is in dire need of a facelift. Enter our next guest, Natasha Moraga. [caption id="attachment_1610" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Donate to Tile Park PV[/caption] If you have walked around the Southside of Puerto Vallarta, no doubt you have seen the Tile Wall on Pino Suarez, at the school. I know that when I first saw the wall, I thought to myself, self, I wish I had a file with my name on it on a wall in Puerto Vallarta! I thought, that would be pretty cool. I never really thought of who actually did this work, this mosaic tiling. I just took it for granted and moved on. [caption id="attachment_1532" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Mosaic Tile Wall at Basillio Badillo and Pino Suarez[/caption] Then one day I was reading an article about this person, Natasha Moraga, and I was fascinated by her story so I just needed to bring her on to the show and have her tell us about herself and her project, El Parque de Los Azulejos, or Tile Park PV. [caption id="attachment_1537" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Art Rendering Parque de Azulejos[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1535" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Art Rendering Parque de Azulejos[/caption] Now I was just at the park you guys, last week with Natasha, and I had a chance to see up close, the progress they have already made there, smoothing out the angles, preparing the surfaces for the application of the tiles. But they need your help to move forward, and you can help and be a part of this incredible outdoor art project in the heart of the Southside of Puerto Vallarta, where Natasha Moraga, with Brother Daniel and a crew of hardworking folks, and you listeners too, will turn this promising piece of paradise, into a shining jewel. In this episode we take A Day Trip to San Pancho, a Beach Community North of Puerto Vallarta. Then an interview with Cassandra Shaw, owner of Cassandra Shaw Jewelry in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Listen to The Podcast Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The El [caption id="attachment_196" align="alignright" width="300"] La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] Dorado Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into the ever so romantic Vista Grill with those dramatic views of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course, at La Palapa you can enjoy that same view of the Los Muertos Pier all day long for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! This week I have a couple of fun things for you, a day trip to San Pancho, a little town north of Puerto Vallarta, and a great guest, Cassandra Shaw of Cassandra Shaw Jewelry on the Southside of town in Puerto Vallarta, but first, let’s see what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, this week the 10th of October 2017. Meet and Greet, Tuesday, October 17th at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse. [caption id="attachment_1633" align="aligncenter" width="404"] Meet and Greet at Pour Favor[/caption] There will be a Meet and Greet, Tuesday, October 17th at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse where I will have my microphones at the ready, to capture your stories and suggestions about the things you are doing in paradise. I’ll have my microphones at the ready so come by and let’s gab. By the way, if you have a business that you want to pitch, a service you want to tell my listeners about, come by and give your business or service a pitch. Come on by, this coming Tuesday evening at Pour Favor on Lazaro Cardenas starting at 6:30, going for couple hours I imagine. Come by. It’s not a live feed or anything guys, I take the audio and make them into interviews so if you are really interesting, or if your story is really compelling, you may end up being the featured guest to a particular episode in the future so who knows right? Now I’m only going to be in town for just a couple of days, just enough time to get some very important interviews for you guys. And you know what? I still haven’t told my wife yet. Oh, I’m not leaving without her, in fact I’m taking her along, she just doesn’t know it yet. Now, I know for a fact that she doesn’t listen to my podcast, so she won’t know till I break the news to her Friday morning. At least, I figure that should give her enough time to buy whatever she needs before we fly out of LAX Monday Morning. Fun fun, fun in the sun! Dia De Los Muertos in Puerto Vallarta Preparations are under way for the day of the Dead Celebrations or Dia de los Muertos, which take place right after the traditional Halloween in the states on the 31st of October, but in the states as well as in Mexico, Mexicans stretch out the celebrations out a little bit and in Mexico, Día de los Muertos is celebrated from the 31st to the 2nd of November. Anyway, there’s lots to be said about the upcoming celebrations throughout the Bajia, and I will be bringing you all of the activities planned for this very festive occasion in Puerto Vallarta. Actually, El Dia De Los Muertos, is the celebration that really kicks off the tourist season in Puerto Vallarta. Now speaking of next week, I will not have an episode of the podcast for you next week due to my planned travels to paradise. You just need to know that I’m not shirking my duties as podcast host, I’m just going to be busy getting you some of the best interviews and on the ground information you can shake a stick at. Or whatever you shake, stick, whatever. Just go ahead and shake it at it. A Day Trip to San Pancho [caption id="attachment_1709" align="aligncenter" width="1250"] San Pancho Map[/caption] A couple of weeks back, I got an email from Polly who wanted me to do an episode on going to San Pancho. Actually, Polly gave me a great review on iTunes, and she made a request, and now Polly, I’m going to grant your wish and take a day trip with you to San Pancho. Actually formerly known as San Francisco, San Pancho is just 4 kilometers north of the hippy town of Sayulita. Sayulita is located about 38 kilometers north of the Puerto Vallarta Airport. Approximately a 45 minute drive. Now I began my day trip at about 2 on a Saturday afternoon. I was on the Southside and looked for a bus to take me to Walmart. Okay, I know what you are thinking, Barry, aren’t we going to San Pancho? Yes, we are going to San Pancho, so instead of me telling you all of the intricacies of bus taking in Puerto Vallarta, let’s review with JR. I have a clip of a conversation I had with him back in January about taking buses in Puerto Vallarta. Let’s see what he says about catching one of those buses from Vallarta, to those beach towns north. JR, Take it away!!!! Link to JR's Maps Listen to The Podcast Okay, so I hopped on a bus that said Walmart on the windscreen and I told the driver that I wanted the bus to San Pancho. Quiero el bus a San Pancho. Which means, I want the bus to San Pancho. You can probably just say it in English, and the driver will most likely understand, but hey, learn the lingo. Write it down, practice it. So in this case, the driver did drop me off at the location JR talked about, the one at the beginning of the Libramiento. South, actually way south [caption id="attachment_1714" align="aligncenter" width="5312"] Tienda at The Puerto Vallarta Bus Stop South of Walmart[/caption] of Walmart. And he is right, I was able to get on the bus before the crowd did, and pretty much had my choice of seats. So the driver motioned to me when we got to the stop. I made sure I was sitting up front near him so he could give me the hi sign. So this place where you get dropped off has a tienda where you can buy drinks and stuff, and you walk a little south along the sidewalk and you will see busses lining up. Their destinations written on the windshields of the bus. Before you get on the bus, if you aren’t sure, just ask the driver. They will tell you how much to pay, and you pay them there. If you are planning on making several stops along the way, for instance if you want to stop for breakfast in Sayulita, then move on up north to San Pancho for Lunch, you pay in segments. There’s no day pass. Get it? So the busses are comfortable. Not air conditioned, but reclining seats, and the driver will play their favorite tunes as you travel along the coast, then cut across the Point. If you go to the website at www.puertovallartatravelshow,com, you will see the rout, and the towns you pass through on your way up to San Pancho. [caption id="attachment_1745" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Bus to San Pancho[/caption] You hit Bucerias, and just before you get to Cruz de Huanacaxtle, route 200 cuts inland, bypassing the Punta de Mita, and travels through a wooded jungle like [caption id="attachment_1740" align="alignleft" width="1000"] San Francisco/San Pancho Fruit Stand[/caption] area, well, it is a jungle out there, really, and eventually you arrive at the coast, in the town of Sayulita. You can get off here, and like JR said, the bus actually drops you off in the middle of town, so you can actually get off the bus right there, and start exploring the hippit dippie town of Sayulita. It’s colorful, and gringoized with lots of specialty shops, not just your typical Mexican souvenirs, although you will find that too. Great places to eat, and the surfing is all the rage. Although, use caution, there have been many reports of unclean waters there. Something about too many people and not sufficient facilities to properly treat raw sewage. So ask questions before entering the water, and use caution. But hey….we’re on our way to San Pancho right? We are going to stay on that bus, because we paid to get to San Pancho right? Right. The bus continues up the coast to the next stop which is San Pancho. The Bus Stops alongside the highway, at the intersection of Highway 200 and Avineda Tercer Mundo, or in English, Third World Avenue. Kinda has a lovely ring to it doesn’t it?. Humm. So the bus lets the passengers off at Third World Avenue where there is a huge Pemex station. You cross the highway, and follow the Third World road right to the beach. Like JR said, the walk is about a mile or so, and it takes you right to the beach. You will pass very colorful shops, hotels, B & B’s, Hostels, and restaurants as you walk down this road, and you will see the homes of the people of the town of San Pancho, on the streets behind these establishments. [caption id="attachment_1736" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] San Pancho[/caption] Now, if you don’t want to walk, just wait around for a taxi to take you into town if you like, but if you are in good enough shape, the walk is totally worth it. The closer you get to the beach, the more restaurants you will find, and shops and stuff, and when you get to the end of the road, it makes a T right into the beach. [caption id="attachment_1737" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] San Pancho, Nayarit[/caption] To your right and left you will find numerous beachfront eateries. Now unlike in Puerto Vallarta, this is a wide beach. Lots of sand. So there’s lots of room at this beach to stretch out. To your left, there is a lagoon, and the beach curves out to a rocky outcropping. To the right, the beach stretches for almost a mile. It’s a big beach, I’m telling you. So food and drink are abundant here at and near the beach. The waves are not the quality of Sayulita, but I’ve heard the water is cleaner to swim in. If you want to see a really cool video of San Pancho from the air, my buddy Dan The Flying Man Dimov has this wonderful YouTube video with him flying along in his Paramotor machine, along the coast in San Pancho. [embed]https://youtu.be/p-KEUtAGW8g[/embed] In fact, I’m going to be interviewing Dan on my visit to Puerto Vallarta next week, and I can’t wait to introduce you to him. He takes people up in the air. Tandem on his glider, so you have to check out the video, and definitely listen to the podcast when I air it in the coming weeks. Dan also has a wonderful video he shot the day of the full solar eclipse, along the coast over the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta. I’ll add that video too to the show notes so check that one out too. I can’t make up my mind which one I like best. You decide. [embed]https://youtu.be/moLff_OiPoI[/embed] I also have some screenshots thanks to Google Earth, showing the town, the bus drop-off spot and the path you will take into town, down Avenida Tercer Mundo. I just love that! So where do you eat? They have a great Bar-b-Que place called Mr. Ribs San Pancho. I couldn’t help myself, it smelled so good. I had pork ribs and [caption id="attachment_1726" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Mr Ribs[/caption] the fixings. Pretty darn good, and the people watching was great too. Then there is a branch of El Barracuda, run by the same group as in Vallarta. Las Palmas Bar and Grill is the biggest place right on the beach they have lots of loungers for you to sit on and sip an umbrella drink, and watch the people play in the sun, at the beach. There are lots of Mexican families playing at the beach, and of course, tourists too. Anyway, you won’t go hungry in San Pancho, or San Francisco. Actually, the town is called San Francisco, and the Beach is called San Pancho Beach, but everyone calls the whole place San Pancho, there are literally dozens of places to eat all around you. It’s pretty cool! [caption id="attachment_1729" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] El Barracuda, San Pancho[/caption] I spotted a doughnut lady, and made a beeline for her, and purchased a couple of yummy pastries which I happily munched and headed back up the road, back to highway 200 for my ride back to Vallarta. Once you get to the highway, go to the right and walk about 100 feet to where the busses stop to pick you up, and head back to Walmart, I mean Vallarta. Now bus rides in Puerto Vallarta never are ordinary. Every once in a [caption id="attachment_1746" align="alignright" width="300"] Singer on The Bus[/caption] while, the driver will let someone on the bus who will clear his or her throat and begin a soliloquy, in Spanish of course, and proclaim to their captive audience, we bus riders, their cause, whether it’s a sick family member, maybe they are out of a job and need to feed their family, maybe speak on behalf of a particular cause, and then at the end of their plea, and let me tell you, these guys are really good, I mean, well-spoken and practiced, they will work their way through the bus, hat in hand, collecting pesos from the riders, then, when the bus makes the next stop, they are out the back door of the bus. Sometimes these take longer than a stop or two. I had one where the driver let this guy on, dressed like a clown who literally went on and on for about 15 minutes. Oh my god! But on this ride home, the driver let on this guy you are hearing now. This guy had a jukebox item around his neck, and he sang to the music. He was a pro. He was a little guy, but he sang with such heart. I recorded it for you to listen to. Please indulge me as I play it for you, to get the flavor of the ride, home from San Pancho. [caption id="attachment_1718" align="alignleft" width="300"] Walmart in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1717" align="alignleft" width="300"] Walmart in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] So you go to Walmart or to the end of the line, and either take a cab back to your hotel, or a bus back, if you feel comfortable. Just remember, if you are going to the Southside, look for a bus that says Centro on it and not Pittial. Otherwise, you may go on one of those magical mystery tours that JR talks about in our episode about taking busue in Puerto Vallarta. And if you haven’t listened to that one, you really ought to have a look. Also, I have a copy of JR’s map that shows the bus stops that I talked about here. So, that’s the day-trip to San Pancho. Give yourself at least 5 hours total to take the bus back and forth, to get the flavor of the town, to get a bite to eat and a spot to drink, and maybe, just maybe have an opportunity to be serenaded by this guy. I have a photo of him in the show notes of this episode of the show. [caption id="attachment_1719" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] San Pancho Beach[/caption] Now Let’s get to our interview. [caption id="attachment_1751" align="aligncenter" width="576"] Cassandra Shaw Jewelry[/caption] In my previous life, I was in the jewelry business, before real estate. Like for 36 years, I worked in the industry. I’m a jewelry designer by trade, a GIA trained Graduate Gemologist and a American Gem Society Certified Gemologist. So naturally, I’m attracted to shiny things, and jewelry stores. And as you walk down Basillio Badillo, you will notice a beautiful storefront and behind the glass you will notice stunning incredible pieces of jewelry, and art pieces. You know right away that this is a special place. Well, being a nosy person, I wanted to meet the lovely lady who has her name on the front of the store, Cassandra Shaw. We talked for a little bit, and I knew right [caption id="attachment_1755" align="alignright" width="300"] Bean Pup[/caption] away that you had to meet her. Let’s go to Puerto Vallarta Mexico, and talk with Cassandra Shaw, of Cassandra Shaw Jewelry. [caption id="attachment_1759" align="alignleft" width="300"] Cassandra Shaw Ring[/caption] Listen to The Podcast [caption id="attachment_1758" align="alignleft" width="428"] Cassandra Shaw Necklace[/caption] So now you know Cassandra. Don’t be afraid to go into the store, and explore. I know jewelry stores can be intimidating to enter, but these people are so nice and down to earth. Really check out her place. You will be so glad you did. [caption id="attachment_1750" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Cassandra Shaw Jewelry Artwork[/caption] And remember, if you are considering booking any type of tour while you are in Puerto Vallarta, you must go to Vallartainfo.com, JR’s website and reserve your tour through him, right from his website. Remember the value for value proposition. His experience and on the ground knowledge of everything Puerto Vallarta in exchange for your making a purchase of a tour that you would do anyway, you’re just doing it through him as a way of saying thank you. It costs no more than if you were to use someone else so do it. Really. And when you do take one of these tours, email me about your experiences. Maybe you can come on-board and share with others what you liked or didn’t like about the tour. Again, contact me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending off a message. An Interview With Debbie Baker, The Property Girl, and Jeff Musto, The PV Kid about Rental Properties in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Also, Puerto Vallarta Celebrates Mexican Independence Day with a 4 Day Celebration. Those are La Palapa, The El Dorado Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into the ever so romantic Vista Grill with those dramatic views of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! Today we will be talking with two great guests, both are involved in the property rental business here in Puerto Vallarta but first, what’s happening this week September 12, 2017. Puerto Vallarta Celebrates Mexican Independence Day [caption id="attachment_1482" align="aligncenter" width="605"] Independence Celebration Puerto Vallarta[/caption] We will be celebrating Mexican Independence Day in Vallarta, and in true Mexican fashion, it’s not just one day, we will be celebrating for four days! Things start up Thursday, September 14, Day of the Charro, which is celebrated in many parts of Mexico. Charros are regal horsemen and women who dress so stylishly, and ride so smoothly, they are the elegant Cowboys and Girls, on Mexico. https://youtu.be/QbdmyKiMi60 Charrería is a tradition, which runs in families just like Tía Maria's famous mole sauce or Don Raul's special pozole. In other words, it is passed from one generation to another. As soon as a tot can seat a horse by himself, he becomes a little charro, or if a girl, she becomes an Escaramuza. Don’t miss this if you are in town. The charro wears a special suit. There are five styles of charro outfits and each one is chosen for its own occasion to be worn. One can go from a working suit through dressy, formal, elegant and all the way to black tie. The color doesn't seem to be as important as the cut of the suit. The jacket is snug fitting and comes only to the waist. Some are heavily embroidered. The pants have slim, tight fitting legs; the dressier ones have gold or silver buttons running down the outside length of the leg. The suit is worn with a short boot, not the regular cowboy boot. A bow tie, white shirt, and the typical big brimmed, embroidered sombrero tops off this costume. Vallarta’s City Center will host a parade of associations of charros that ride on horseback through the main streets along the malecón as those along the route, applaud their horsemen and women parading through town in their fine outfits. If you want to learn more about the traditions of these horsemen and women, The Charros, I have a link to an article written back in 2007 by [caption id="attachment_370" align="alignright" width="212"] Drama & Diplomacy in Sultry Puerto Vallarta[/caption] Jenny McGill, and if you have listened to my older podcasts, you would know that Jenny McGill and her husband Howard, moved to Puerto Vallarta in 1973, where she served as the U.S. Consular agent for 14 years. And she wrote the book, Drama and Diplomacy in Sultry Puerto Vallarta. A book all Vallarta lovers would really enjoy. Interesting to note here, but Pamela Thompson of Healthcare Resources Puerto Vallarta, a friend of the show who talked with us about medical tourism in Puerto Vallarta in an earlier episode, does lots of the things that Jenny did back in the day. I bet Pamela could write a pretty juicy book herself, but she would probably have to move out of town forever. Never mind Pamela. Anyway, Jenny is gone now but her writing lives on and I have that link to her article all about the Day of the Charro. No JR, not the day of the churro, That’s every day in Mexico. That reminds me, one day I’ll introduce you to the Churro guy in Emiliano Zapata. But I digress. Where were we? Oh Yeah! http://www.mexconnect.com/articles/1579-september-14-day-of-the-charro We continue with the celebrations. On the 15th, day before Independence Day, the Independence Day festivities will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a Commemoration of Independence at Plaza de Armas. Then in the evening, at 7:30 pm, the plaza will be hosting musical and dance performances until 10:00 p.m. At 11:00 p.m. the military protocol act of the Cry of Independence will take place at Presidential Plaza, followed by fireworks at midnight. What is this Cry of Independence? The Cry of Dolores or in Spanish, Grito de Dolores, is a historical event that happened in Mexico in the early morning of 16 September 1810. A Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bell of his church and gave the this proclamation, (call to arms) that triggered the Mexican War of Independence. 'My children: a new dispensation comes to us today. Will you receive it? Will you free yourselves? Will you recover the lands stolen three hundred years ago [caption id="attachment_1481" align="alignright" width="300"] Father Hidalgo[/caption] from your forefathers by the hated Spaniards? We must act at once... Will you defend your religion and your rights as true patriots? Long live Our Lady of Guadalupe! Death to bad government! Death to the Gachupines! or Native Spaniards. This happened in the state of Guanajuato within the small town of Dolores, now known as Dolores Hidalgo. And although we aren’t sure of the exact words, they were never written down, they were pieced together by those assembled who could recollect the words. Finally after years of struggle, In October of 1825, the 16th of September began to be observed as Mexico's Independence Day. And every year on the eve of Independence Day, the President of Mexico actually re-enacts and recites the Grito from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City, while ringing the very same bell that the Catholic Priest Hidalgo rang in 1810. Pretty cool. So you may want to catch that ceremony here in Vallarta. I’m guessing it’s going to be pretty cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz-D0GsLYO8 Next on the 16th, the official Independence Day, a parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. along Calle Morelos in downtown. Then, beginning at 8:00 p.m. at the Arches on The Malecon, you can catch musical performances by Gypsy Rumba a great group whom we’ve talked about with Gary Beck, Remember? And Valentina González. Fun times! [caption id="attachment_1483" align="aligncenter" width="601"] Taco Festival[/caption] And finally, on the 17th, since you haven’t had enough party, you can enjoy the Taco Fair in Lázaro Cárdenas Park, from 5 to 11 in the afternoon, they will be selling traditional tacos such as steak or pastor, or lobster and / or shrimp, and more. Just make sure you wear a broad rimmed hat and sun block cuz it’s going to be hot boys and girls. Got an email, no actually it was an iTunes review the other day from listener Polly MB in Mexico, and she writes, Can you talk about San Pancho Beach next time? That would be nice. Well Polly, I have an episode planned with a day trip to San Pancho, and just because you asked, I’ll put that together for you in three weeks. I have a couple of other episodes that I want to get out first, but that one is coming soon. Speaking of mail and reviews, I got a surprise note that I thought I’d share with you. If you were listening last week, I was telling you a story about my buddy Debbie from Canadia. I referred to her, in a loving way of course as cheap Debbie. Remember? Check out this note from Tessa…. Hi Barry!!!! My mom sent me one of your podcasts to listen to, the one about the Uber in PV. Well...my mom is "Debbie G" aka "cheap Debbie" hahahahaha. I thought you might like to hear about something she did to me a couple years ago... Oh..do tell Tessa! My parents had been in PV for a couple of weeks and I flew in, they met me at the airport, we had some beers at the Oxxo as is our tradition, and then I was [caption id="attachment_1463" align="alignright" width="300"] Bridge at Puerto Vallarta Airport[/caption] expecting to go over the walking bridge and grab a yellow cab to the condo. Well, was I ever surprised when that didn't happen. My mom and dad thought instead of taking a cab to the condo, that taking the bus would be more "fun". Yes..."fun" is what they said. After a 4.5 hour flight and with a massive suitcase, they dragged me onto the bus because they thought it would be "fun". We take the bus a lot in PV and we love it, but after traveling all day, trying to adjust to the heat and humidity, and having a large suitcase in tow, I would not suggest anyone do this for "fun". Lol So Debbie, I’m just so disappointed in you Deb, do you hate it when someone calls you Deb? Cuz my wife hates it when I call her Deb…Debbie, Debbie, Debbie G. I thought for just a moment that you were normal, cheap, well frugal with a strong sense of tradition, but normal. But no. At least I know that your husband is in on it too. Torturing your unsuspecting daughter? Debbie!!!! You’re a poster girl for my pet peeve. But a Bus…From the airport? Well, gotta say it’s great that we can get the inside scoop on airport transportation of all sorts wouldn’t you say? Thank you Tessa and Debbie. You both made my day!!! [caption id="attachment_179" align="alignleft" width="300"] Hall of Flowers Restaurant[/caption] Now on a more serious note, the Vallarta Botanical Garden needs your help. It seems that Trip Advisor has removed the Garden from their Puerto Vallarta page and moved it to the Cabo Corrientes Page. This is no Bueno for The Gardens. Bob asked me to share this note with you… Hola! For some unknown and very unfair reason, Trip Advisor has recently taken our Vallarta Jardin Botanico off their listing of attractions for Puerto Vallarta. The gardens have been open for 10 years now, and the management and staff have put a tremendous amount of work into making the gardens exceptionally beautiful, and making progress in protecting the natural beauty and heritage of this part of Mexico. One reward of all this endless hard work has been gardens Trip Advisor listing as the third best experience to have while visiting PV. As we all know, the gardens are a wonderful place to spend an afternoon and the restaurant always offers wonderful meals... losing their place on the Puerto Vallarta top ten listing is going to be enormously detrimental to the garden's admissions and bottom line. [caption id="attachment_163" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] The Vallarta Botanical Garden[/caption] Trip Advisor made the decision to change the Vallarta Jardin Botanico's location to Cabo's Corrientes for some sudden, arbitrary reason that they cannot even justify when other local excursions are still listed as being located in Vallarta, even though they are farther away than the gardens. Please add your name to the petition linked below to support the Vallarta Jardin Botánico's efforts to get their listing back as a well loved Puerto Vallarta attraction... [caption id="attachment_1484" align="alignright" width="300"] Click Here toHelp The Vallarta Botanical Gardens.[/caption] If you remember, back in February I interviewed Bob and we talked a little about Trip Advisor…Listen to the audio.. So I have a link to the petition in the show notes for this episode. If you haven’t already done so, go there and sign it. It just takes less than a minute. Unless you type slow, then two minutes max. If you’re drunk, I can’t guarantee a time, just sober up and sign it already at puertovalartatravelshow.com. Now, Sam, here’s my picks for taco stands and local food in the Romantic Zone and Downtown Vallarta… You need to go to the very north side of town, into the 5th of December neighborhood to get some great tacos. Pepe’s Tacos, across the street from the Pemex Station is great for tacos al pastor. Very close to that, El Carboncito is the bomb! They make fantastic tacos al pastor, everything [caption id="attachment_1518" align="alignright" width="300"] Taco Night[/caption] but they have a baked potato that you can have stuffed with meat and veggies. So good. Both of these establishments open at 5 and stay open till the wee hours of the morning. Also, in that same neighborhood, check out Lolitas for great home cooking. Also as you make your way south along the Malecon, on Libertad there is Una Familia, and they are also on the Malecon across from the lighthouse. Great view, and great cooking. Don’t forget Burros Bar on the beach! That’s a must Sam. For wonderful comida Corrida, Dianitas, Adobes, and Cenaduria Celia, in the south side of Vallarta, in the Emiliano Zapata Neighborhood. The three taco stands right next to the big Pharmicia Guadalajara are great. Any of them will do fine for you. Also Cisneros Seafood, and oh there are so many. That’s all for now Sam. [caption id="attachment_1496" align="alignleft" width="169"] Jeff Musto, The PV Kid[/caption] I’m gonna get a show with my favorite taco stands and restaurants together pretty soon. Hope that will keep you busy for now because we need to get to our guests, the kid and the girl. The PV Kid, Jeff Musto, and The Property Girl, Debbie Baker. No they don’t work together you guys. I had stumbled upon The PV Kid many times over the years as I searched for vacation digs in Vallarta, but never met him till my last visit, when I [caption id="attachment_1480" align="alignright" width="169"] The PV Kid[/caption] happened to rent an Airbnb from him. I was really glad he agreed to sit down with me for an interview. [embed]https://youtu.be/LSxZ3Bez2Ww[/embed] Back in May, I did a meet and greet with listeners and my microphones at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse, and the interview I did with Jeff Musto, The PV Kid, was one of three interviews that I could keep, because, it was a drunken bunch. Welcome to PV guys. Anyway, let’s get right to the conversation I had with Jeff Musto, The PV Kid. Love Jeff, and love that dog. [caption id="attachment_1492" align="alignleft" width="300"] The PV Kid[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1494" align="alignright" width="300"] The PV Kid[/caption] Now my next guest is also in the property rental and management business. Those are La Palapa, The El Dorado [caption id="attachment_194" align="alignright" width="300"] La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into The Vista Grill. That’s the that we all have grown to know and love over the years, the Vista Grill that used to be up on the hill, well now it has a new vista and that is right on the beach where you get the same Vista Grill Menu, and the fantastic Vista Grill service and what’s best, is it’s right there on the beach with a dramatic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night with beautiful colors. You can enjoy dinner under the stars, with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. ! It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! Today we have a special show but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 4th of July, 2017. Uber is Here and The Battle Has Begun Last week, just as I was recording the podcast, Uber was launching service in Puerto Vallarta and all along the Bajia de Banderas, they are now operating in Nayarit [caption id="attachment_904" align="aligncenter" width="1014"] Uber Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] in Nuevo Vallarta and above, as well as in Puerto Vallarta, Cabo Corrientes, you know, south of the Ameca River in Jalisco, and it has been a pretty exciting week as battle lines were drawn, and tempers were on the rise along with the temperature and humidity in the air. What a combo. Rain and Heat Listen to JR [caption id="attachment_109" align="aligncenter" width="800"] What to Expect When You Arrive at the Puerto Vallarta Aitport[/caption] It’s July and folks, if you are heading to Puerto Vallarta this time of year, be prepared for rain in the evenings and lots of heat and humidity during the daytime. I have a quick clip from JR who talked with me about how hot it can get in the tropics during the Summertime, so let’s listen in…. Jorullo Suspension Bridge [caption id="attachment_944" align="alignleft" width="762"] Jorullo Suspension Bridge Canopy River Zipline Tours, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] JR sent me an article a couple of months back about a suspension bridge built by the folks at the Canopy River Zipline Adventure Tours, and my [caption id="attachment_942" align="alignright" width="300"] Canopy River Zipline Tours, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] buddies Jennifer and Dee along with JR were great to to pass along the information, so I spoke with Edgar Lopez at Canopy River and we will have that episode coming up really soon. Maybe even next week. We’ll see, but this bridge the Jorullo Suspension Bridge is like 4 football fields long and is suspended over the Caule’ River Gorge. JR walked the length of it and they drive vehicles over it like their ATV’s. It’ really cool and I will bring Edgar and the Canopy River Tours to you like I said, soon. iTunes Review I hadn’t looked at the latest reviews that you guys have written up about the show on iTunes, but I looked and lo and behold, I came across this one and it really made me smile. Ray and Cherie Tessmann from Wisconson and Ray is a firefighter in Kenosha, and Cherie is a paralegal and I got an email from Ray a few months ago and I actually [caption id="attachment_940" align="alignright" width="300"] Ray and Cherie Tessman in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] read it on the show. It went like this… First off let me introduce myself, my name is Ray and I’m from Wisconsin. My wife Cherie and I feel the same way you and many others feel about Puerto Vallarta. It was my wife and I’s first trip together when dating back in 2001 and we have been coming back almost every year since. We travel to other locations sometimes, but always make time to return to Puerto Vallarta. Through the years we have met many friends both local and north of the boarder. We enjoy some of our old favorites and always find new places of interest. As time goes on we are lucky to be able to spend more time there, we are up to two weeks. We are very lucky, but always look forward to returning after we get home. Thank you for your shows, I enjoy listening to them. I know you ask for suggestions so I wanted to sit down and type you up a correspondence about some of our favorite places are….. [caption id="attachment_938" align="alignleft" width="300"] Ray and Cherie Tessmann in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] So I asked Ray if I could send him a microphone and he said he and Cherie would be in Vallarta in May, and it just so happened that hey, I was going to be there too so I said, let’s meet and do the interview in PV, so, when they got into town Ray let me know that he and Cherie were going to be having drinks over at Plaza Romy at Twisted Palms after dinner and I should come on by and have a few drinks, talk PV stuff and make arrangements to get together to record our interview. So that was cool because I needed an interview with the owner of Twisted Palms Al Sellers, and you can hear that interview in the Plaza Romy podcast I did a couple of weeks back. Anyway, I get to Twisted Palms and look around the big bar Al has there, and try to decide who Ray and Cherie are. I was surprised to see that they were so young looking because they had been going to Puerto Vallarta for so long, I figured they would be my age, but Ray is [caption id="attachment_953" align="alignright" width="314"] Twisted Palms, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] this big strapping firefighter, and Cherie is this beautiful tiny thing. They are such a great couple, you will see soon. I asked if they wanted to come up into the hood to my Airbnb and they offered to have me come to their condo at the Vista Del Sol Condo complex, right on the ocean, overlooking Playa Los Muertos, the Malecon, just a beautiful property. I’m glad they didn’t come to my humble apartment looking back. They would have defiantly been unimpressed. Hello fellow travelers, welcome to this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show, all about buses in Puerto Vallarta. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be to introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa group of restaurants, La Palapa Restaurant is on the southside of town, right down on the beach in Puerto Vallarta. La Palapa, and El Dorado Restaurants. And if you play your cards right, you can hear Alberto play his beautiful music and enjoy songs like Samba de Puerto Vallarta when you enjoy dinner at La Palapa. Just saying an added bonus to a great romantic meal on the beach. Now before we get to buses in Puerto Vallarta I want to thank a listener, Brett from Seattle Washington who reminded me about a tip regarding filling out those immigration forms that we talks about in show 2 and 3. You know, the one you get from the flight attendant before you touch down in Puerto Vallarta, they are called FMM’s which stands for Forma Migratoria Multiple. Anyway, he says in his note…Barry, Listening to your second podcast and noticed you didn't mention that you can complete the FMM online. It's so much easier, and you don't have to worry about a pen and writing small enough to get everything in the tiny boxes. When printed, fold it several times so they can separate the 'top' part from the 'bottom' like the pre-printed ones. I occasionally have to tell them it's 'nuevo - en linea'. Big time saver! Here's the site: https://www.inm.gob.mx/fmme/publico/en/solicitud ... there's an 'ES' and an 'EN' button you can click for Spanish or English. So I have added the links to download that FMM online and you can find them at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com in episode 4. And thank you again Brett, by the way Brett has a really good story about timeshares and he is a little shy, but I’m gonna try to coax him to come on the show and tell you how he makes timeshares work for him. It’s really interesting. And you..yes you can reach out to me and tell me your Puerto Vallarta story, give me a suggestion by going to the contact us tab at the top of our webpage and sending me a email. It’s easy and fun. This episode I will be talking buses in Puerto Vallarta with my friend JR in PV. Now you guys have to cut me a little slack here please because I’m just getting used to the long distance interviewing and the proper recording levels and all that other wonky tech stuff. What I’m saying is that it will get better in future interviews so please bear with me as I improve my technique I have been told by the best in the business, don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good. So with that that in mind, let’s ask JR, is it okay to take buses in Puerto Vallarta? What about …. take buses in Puerto Vallarta? JR, what about buses? Are the safe? Are you gonna find chickens and livestock on them? What do you expect when you get onto a bus? JR: We don’t have chicken bus, going back we did. First what we have to understand the bus system here was not built for tourists. It was built to get people to and from work. For children to get o and from school, etcetera etcetera. The roads tend to go through the residential areas. The local residential areas where tourists will be completely lost. Barry: Interesting, because I found most bus drivers don’t speak English very well. I imagine that’s why they don’t interact with tourists that much. JR: Some do, if you can say the destination in Spanish, they’ll either say Yes or No. Another thing to consider of course is downtown, we basically have two North-South streets. In other words, in order to get to the South side of town to the North side of town you got to go through one of those streets. Basically, if you’re going North it’s one street. Going South, it’s another. Consequently, there’s a lot of business that go through downtown then go off into all these weird many areas that I’ve never seen. Barry: You mentioned on your website a very funny thing. You say take a mystery tour, hop on the bus and see where it takes you. Sounds like a lot of fun. Would there be a place that you would take a bus to nowhere that you wouldn’t want to go. JR: No. It’s a cheap trip it’s just seven and a half pesos. There and back it’s 15 pesos. You go to the end of the line. Sometimes the bus will turn around back. Sometimes there’s another bus waiting to go back. If you change course of course you have to pay twice. Barry: Sure. So do you need exact change when you get on a bus? JR: It helps. Seven and a half pesos. 50 centavo coin is a tiny thing. Barry: You’ll lose it. JR: Very small and difficult to find in your pocket sometimes. Barry: That’s for sure. What is this little white piece of paper the driver gives you when you get on a bus? First time I got on a bus I thought it was for transfer or something. JR: No, that shows that you paid. And occasionally an inspector would come in and look at the numbers at the bus drivers stack of tickets and go through the bus and check the numbers if everybody's been issued one. And that the driver is not cheating by not giving a ticket. Barry: That’s what that’s for. They don’t have these cameras that they have here in the States to keep an eye on your drivers and keep them all good and honest. Actually they’re handing you their ticket which is a receipt. JR: Yes, it’s a receipt. And also I believe it covers you in case of accident. Although, I can’t even remember ever there being a bus accidents where anybody got hurt inside the bus. Barry: That’s good to know. Let’s say that you arrive at the airport and all you have is a carry on baggage. Maybe a backpack, a roll-away, you’re traveling light. Can you catch a bus from the airport to where you’re going either North or South of the airport? JR: Only South, no, North or South really.. The ones going North will be not city buses but long distance buses most of them because the border of the next state is just north of the airport. Everything going there is basically an intercity bus. The buses coming South basically are coming from Ixtapa, Las Palmas not that many. One of them that I’ve taken before is a magical mystery tour. Although it said central, it eventually got there but it took a long long time. We ended up in the hinterland. I don’t know where we were. I just sat there and crossed my fingers. Eventually it got to the South side where they all end up. In the case of coming through the airport, avoid any bus going South that says Pitillal because that’s the first place the magical mystery tour bus goes. Barry: It kinds of winds it way to Pitillal I imagine. JR: It goes to Pitillal and it goes to other colonias that I’ve never seen before. Barry: So you’re gonna be looking for a bus going South that doesn’t say Pitillal on it. But do you have a specific like Central on it. What does it say? JR: Central. I don’t think there are tunnel buses that go by the airport. I might be wrong. I should explain that if it says tunnel which is spelled T-U-N-E-L pronounced “too-nle” this goes on the bypass road around downtown avoiding that constriction there. If you’re going to the south side or going from the South side North and you want to avoid downtown and the delay going through that traffic. You take the bypass road which is called Libra Miento which basically means it’s free. Barry: Okay, it will also say tunel on it right? JR: Yes. “too-nle”. T-U-N-E-L. That will avoid downtown if you’re going from the hotel zone, the Marina or any hotel towards the airport you want to go to the South side of town you can avoid downtown by taking the Tunel Bus. Barry: Okay, got it. If you’re taking a bus from from the hotel zone that’s pretty much just going through downtown, isn’t it? JR: Right. They all go to the South side but from the hotel zone some would take the bypass road. You can see it quite easily on my map. And you can click on that. It starts from the Marina airport area all the way down to Mismaloya. Barry: Okay, and it actually shows the right buses to take. JR: Yes. I also have maps of North of the airport. Barry: Fantastic, so this is one of the reasons why you all need to go to vallartainfo.com and click on that map tab. Bring them down and you can see how nice and detailed these are. They give restaurants. They give locations ofwhere to catch those buses. JR: It shows the bus stops. Well, most of them. Barry: That is so invaluable. These destinations are put on the windshields of the buses right? JR: At the top of the bus, there’s a window that’s their main destination window. That will tell you where they will end up. Then right on the windscreen the various places that you might want to go to. For instance Wal-Mart it might say IMSS which is the local state hospital. It may mention markets like Mega or Soriana. It may also mention places in between the main destination and the origin. Barry: So those are the tips when you’re looking at the bus. To understand where they’re going at the end which is along the top. The stops they make along the way which is written on the windscreen. JR: For instance, Marine Terminal if you want to take an excursion that’s leaving from the Marine Terminal you would want to look for the bus that says Wal-Mart and Marine Terminal. If you go to the Marina which is not the same as the Marine Terminal and is quite the distance away. You need to take the Marina Bus. There’s only one bus that drives into the residential area of the Marina. That will say Marina on top. This particular bus is not very regular about every 20 mins. Barry: If you want to go to the Marina you really need to plan for not having a bus come pick you up right away. JR: Right, it’s not as frequent as the other buses. The other buses are every five minutes there’s another bus. Barry: It seems like it’s a congo line of buses in Puerto Vallarta. JR: If you’re going South, let’s say to Mismaloya Boca de Tomatlan There’s the bus that goes from the South side all the way to Boca de Tomatlan and then turns around and comes back. That is eight pesos. Barry: So seven and half for city bus all the way up to the airport-ish. If you are going to catch that Mismaloya bus, it goes down to Boca that will cost you eight pesos. What’s eight pesos today? About 40 cents? JR: Yes, I think. If you’re going further South to say to the Botanical Garden or to El Tuito. There’s another bus that leaves on the corner of Aguacate and Carranza and that will cost you 28 pesos all the way to El Tuito and takes about 50 minutes. Barry: It’s a regular city bus too? JR: It’s intercity bus because El Tuito is considered to be another city. Barry: And that one you catch and will take you even further South. JR: Right, if you’re going to see the Botanical Garden. They say to Botanical Garden it’s only 20 pesos but quite often just take 28 which is all he way to El Tuito. Barry: Tell me what’s El Tuito like? JR: El Tuito is quite a bit older than Puerto Vallarta. It was a stop on the Camino Real, the King’s road from Barra de Navidad to the mines. The Manila boat coming from the Philippines would stop occasionally at Barra de Navidad and unload some goodies for the mines. Maybe take on a little silver but mainly unload some goodies for the mines. They would go by oxcart and mule all the way up this road. It was quite primitive in those days and El Tuito was about halfway and it’s a valley and it had grazing and it had water. They would stop there and eventually they built some accommodation and that was the start of the town. Barry: I just saw not too long ago a post of you going down to El Tuito. JR: We went to El Tuito which is on the way to a couple of beaches called Playa Mayto and a fishing village called Teramecle. Barry: I think pretty much covers most of what I want to talk about, well not really. JR: This bus is going North. Barry: Yes, that’s what I was gonna say what about the bus going North? JR: Right, do you want to get to Nueva Vallarta Bucerías, Punta de Mita, Sayulita, Lo de Marcos La Cruz de Huanacaxtle and all those place in Rincón de Guayabitos, a lot of them are covered in the bus line called ATM. Not to be confused with the cash machine. Compostela Pacifico line the ATM only goes to Punta de Mita at around the bay for Sayulita your location you need the Compostela Pacifico line. These are all available at Wal-Mart. There’s a special bus stop for these buses going North, not city buses. Barry: You catch the buses at Wal-Mart that sounds just like a commercial. I like that. You catch a bus if you’re going to North and get the Compostela bus. You need to get to Wal-Mart first. JR: There’s one stop before Wal-Mart, the first stop is right at the end of libramiento departamento of the hotel zone. It’s marked on my map. It’s a good one to get to if you want to get a seat if it’s very busy. Barry: It’s really going to be busy going up North especially in the mornings when people are going to work, right? JR: Exactly. This applies going to South as well. If you want to go at Boca de Tomatlan went down to catch the first bus on the South side you might want to go to next bus in line to get a seat. Because quite often you’d be standing. Barry: Those are fun trips when you’re standing in the trips especially the South one. How about the North one is it just as fun? JR: It’s good. It gets busy. I even had a lady offer me a seat once. Barry: No. JR: I guess she thought I was really old. Barry: These buses are interstate buses. They go from Jalisco to Nayarit? JR: Right, they’re considered inter-city. Barry: What kind of pesos do we need to bring along when we go to Punta de Mita and we hop on that bus over at- JR: Let’s see, Bucerias is 14 pesos. Nuevo Vallarta is either 15 or 18 pesos depending on whether you go to North end or South end of it. La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is 18 pesos. Punta de Mita is 26. Sayulita is 35 I believe. And that takes you right into Sayulita and that’s the best bus to get for Sayulita. Barry: Sayulita they go farther North? JR: If you want to go further North let’s say San Pancho which is actually called San Francisco but everybody calls it San Pancho. Lo de Marcos, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle are all on the way on that road that eventually goes to Tepic the capital of Nayatrit. Those buses won’t go into these various peach towns. They will drop you in the highway and you have to huff it in to the actual town. Usually it’s less than a mile. Barry: All those buses you catch at Wal-Mart. JR: Wal-Mart is the most recognizable location. Everybody knows what it looks like. You can actually get earlier as I said at the beginning of the hotel zone and it’s marked on my map. If you want to get seat. It also stops at airport if you wave it down. Buses will stop for you whether it’s not natural regular stop. On the South road or Northern road as long as it’s a place they can pull off because there are only two lanes. Then they will stop. In order to wave them down, not wave at them. They’ll more likely wave back. Barry: What’s the right sign? JR: The way to stop the bus is to point in the middle of the road right in front of you. The bus will stop. Barry: They take directions. Instead of waving and saying hey there what you’re saying is stop right here. Right where I’m pointing. JR: This is the tradition down here. They never wave and the bus drivers know if that means somebody wants you to stop. If you wave they might think you’re waving at somebody else. Barry: If you are a visitor coming to Puerto Vallarta would you suggest ever renting a car? JR: No I wouldn’t at all. Unless you’re planning on driving to somewhere whether it’s not a regular bus service like San Sebastian. You can’t really have a day drive on San Sebastian because the time you get there it’s almost time to go back. Because they have about four buses a day. Barry: San Sebastian, that is the silver mining town up in the hills. JR: Up in the mountains. 4,600 feet is pretty high. Barry: Is there anything else that you can think of that we need to know about the public bus system down here? JR: Just be ready to hold on because quite often the driver will take off while he’s making change. Barry: Keep an eye on that. Make sure you always turn around. Don’t leave anything on the bus, very important, before you leave because you may not get it back. Or maybe you will? JR: People get their stuff back right where they left behind sometimes but there’s not central garage or anything. A lot of these buses are owned by the drivers and they drive them home. Barry: I didn’t know that. That’s very interesting. JR: The bus companies but they’re like cooperatives in a way. Some of the bus companies own a bunch of buses and in effect rent them out to the driver. Other drivers actually own the bus. And work with the cooperative and pay cooperative a certain amount. Barry: That’s pretty precise description of what’s going on down on the ground in Puerto Vallarta regarding buses and bus system there. Just remember everybody; if you have the urge to rent the car don’t. Unless you’re gonna go where the buses and the cab won’t take you. Speaking of cabs, in another episode you and I will be talking about taxis. Is that okay JR? JR: Sure that’s fine. I would interject also if you’re going to rent a car, the only rental company I can always really 100% recommend are Gecko Car Rental. They’re not in town they’re in Bucerias. But they will come and bring your car anywhere including the airport. They’re the only ones that don’t have bad press. Barry: Thanks that a great tip then. Gecko for those of you who are thinking about renting a car. If you really really got to do it. Do it in through this company in Bucerias called Gecko. JR once again, you are a huge fount of information for us , for my listeners, for our listeners. I really really appreciate you coming out today again. JR: Welcome Barry. Barry: We’ll talk again soon maybe about taxis. JR: Okay, I’ll try and think of good things to say. Barry: Sure you will. Thanks again JR. JR: Okay, bye. Barry: Bye now. So that was quite an in depth look at taking buses in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. A couple of items I want to touch base on before we leave this subject behind and that is the conversation I had with JR about taking a bus from the Airport. I would never suggest that you take a bus if you are a first time traveler to Vallarta. That is a bus from the airport to your hotel. It would be silly. I’m just talking about the seasoned traveler who is traveling light. No luggage just a backpack. That bus you can catch along side the arrivals terminal under the pedestrian bridge and look for a bus that says Centro on it. The other item I wanted to mention is that the Mismaloya bus that also goes to Boca de Tomatlan can be found at the corner of Basillo Badillo and Constitution. They are orange and white buses and will cost you 8 pesos. And I just want to remind you that the bus to El Tuito and the Botanical Gardens is at Aguacate and Carranza. Check in my shownotes for all of the routes and costs for buses in Puerto Vallarta and you will find them at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com and the notes will be right there with this podcast post. I should also mention, since we are talking pesos and dollars, as of this podcast, January 22, 2017 the Mexican peso to the US dollar is almost 22 pesos to 1. I also have to add that we have experienced an increase of up to 20% in fuel prices in the last weeks here in mexico so taxi and bus prices are expected to rise in the near future but never fear, we will keep you up to date as things on the ground change. Thus far however, we haven’t seen any drastic changes in transportation costs to the end user. Okay, Again you will find all of the show notes to this podcast and others to come including the links to JR’s site and to the website where you can purchase the fantastic music of Alberto Perez who we will listen to as we play out this episode at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com, just click on the show links tab at the top of the home page. Again, email me with your experiences. And one more favor please, if you like this podcast, please take the time and give me a good review on iTunes if you would. It would be so appreciated if you would just take the extra time to do that for me. That way we can get the word out to more and more people about the magic of this place. So, thanks to you for listening all the way through Thank you JR for sharing all you know about buses and answering all my goofy questions. Thanks again my friends, this is Barry Kessler signing off with a wish for you all to slow down, be kind and live the Vallarta lifestyle. Relax, Manana. Nos Vemos amigos!
San Francisco (or San Pancho, as it is known by locals) is a small town in the Nayarit region of Mexico. Once a small fishing village, then the site of an urban planning experiment in the 1970s, San Pancho is now a surfer town experiencing rapid gentrification. My father purchased land in San Pancho close to a decade ago, and I have visited annually since 2012. In that time, the sounds of the town have shifted. The noise of rural Mexico - roosters, gas company promotions, roadside produce vendors - are now accompanied by the sounds of nightlife and tourism growth - rumba-remixed hits, visitors on all-inclusive day trips, yoga retreats. This piece is an audio journal of San Pancho now, recorded in segments between December 16, 2016 and January 1, 2017.
Erin McNeaney and Simon Fairbairn sold it all to travel indefinitely. In 2008, they took a year to go to travel around India, South East Asia, Australia, the South Pacific and the US, and after seeing and doing so much in just a year, they couldn’t stand to return to their lives in the UK. So, rather than put off travel for someday, they made that day March 1, 2010, and left to spend a year in South America, with just carry-on backpacks and no end in sight. Together they’ve defined what living means to them and created a life of travel they write about on their popular travel blog NeverEndingVoyage.com, where they document their journeys, the challenges, launching a travel app, and embracing the untethered life as a digital nomad couple. I’m going to talk to about Erin about why they made travel a bigger priority in their life, and how they do it.
