Send us a textIn this special re-release, we revisit my conversation with New York Times bestselling author Daniel Pink from a couple of years ago. After recently listening to this episode during one of my runs, I was reminded by how relevant his insights remain for both my personal and professional life—wisdom worth sharing again with my listeners.Daniel Pink, former speechwriter for Vice President Al Gore, has authored numerous influential works including "To Sell Is Human," "Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us," "A Whole New Mind," "Free Agent Nation," and his most recent book "The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward."Key InsightsDuring our conversation, Daniel shares invaluable life lessons that have resonated with audiences worldwide. As he powerfully states:"You cannot plan out careers in meticulous detail. You have to do things for the right reason, do things for their intrinsic value and be opportunistic and open to next steps. We need to focus on persistence over talent and the importance of leaving an imprint."We dive deep into the principles from "The Power of Regret," exploring how this universal human emotion can be transformed into a powerful tool for growth. Daniel offers practical strategies for harnessing regret as a catalyst for positive change rather than a source of paralysis.Education InsightsAn important segment of our discussion centers on Daniel's experience with the International Baccalaureate (IB) education system through his three children. As someone with over 25 years in the IB system myself, his observations about its transformative impact greatlly resonated with me.Why ListenWhether you're hearing this conversation for the first time or revisiting it, Daniel Pink's timeless wisdom offers valuable perspective on motivation, regret, career development, and education. I encourage you to explore "The Power of Regret" and his other works to further benefit from his insights. It was truly an honor to speak with Daniel, and I'm delighted to share this important conversation with you once again.Connect With Daniel Pink: WebsiteDaniel Pink's BooksTwitter 'X'LinkedIn

They discuss Reid's experiences and insights from researching healthcare systems around the world, particularly the need for universal coverage and the various models of healthcare delivery.T.R. emphasizes the importance of a key principle in any functional healthcare system at a national level: healthcare for everyone.  He wrote about this in his NY Times bestselling book The Healing of America.  Some of the key discoveries in the book are the inefficiencies of the U.S. healthcare system compared to others worldwide and the potential benefits of adopting a government-run healthcare model similar to Medicare and the VA.  Reid also critiques the profit-driven nature of American health insurance and advocates for reforms prioritizing patient care over profits.T.R. and Chris then discuss the unique window of opportunity in 2025 and the need for a new framing of universal healthcare, suggesting alternatives in language around 'Medicare for All.'  T.R. emphasizes the importance of price controls in reducing administrative costs and improving efficiency in healthcare systems.  Reid also addresses the role of innovation in healthcare, arguing that high costs do not necessarily lead to better medical advancements.  He cites several excellent examples of recent innovations, all from outside the U.S.  This is a great listen as the U.S. spends more on healthcare, yet we are not even in the top 10 in the world.  It's hard to make one aspect of healthcare successful, like Hospice and Palliative Care, if the broader ecosystem it resides in is flawed and unsustainable.  Join us; this is very timely.Guest: T.R. Send us a textFrom the streets of 1980s Philadelphia to the corridors of major publishing houses, Omar Tyree's journey has been defined by audacious pivots and authentic storytelling. The New York Times bestselling author of "Flyy Girl" joins Sanya to explore the experiences that shaped his literary voice and career.Tyree reveals how growing up as the oldest grandchild in a household full of aunts, uncles, and cousins cultivated his natural storytelling abilities. Though initially pursuing football and pharmacy, his talent for vividly recounting neighborhood experiences eventually led him to writing. "I wasn't reading books. I wasn't on the reading side until college," Tyree explains. "The whole storytelling thing was watching movies and telling stories in the neighborhoods."With characteristic candor, Tyree discusses the challenges and triumphs of breaking into publishing, from self-publishing his early works to landing a major deal with Simon & Schuster. He shares valuable insights for aspiring authors about research methods, genre flexibility, and maintaining authenticity while building an audience. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Tyree reveals how his iconic "Flyy Girl" trilogy—newly reimagined with fresh covers—charts the evolution of Black female identity through its protagonist's elevation from street-smart youth to business powerhouse.Perhaps most compelling is Tyree's thoughtful examination of the growing disconnect between Black men and women in contemporary relationships. Drawing from both personal experience and cultural observation, he offers a nuanced perspective on how changing family dynamics, economic shifts, and communication barriers have altered relationship expectations. "We're going to start those new conversations," Tyree promises about his upcoming book tour, where he plans to address these complex issues head-on.Whether you're an aspiring writer seeking publishing insights, a longtime fan of Tyree's work, or someone interested in thoughtful discussions about modern relationships, this conversation delivers both practical wisdom and thought-provoking perspectives on navigating life's pivotal moments with courage and authenticity.Support the show

Should Have Listened to My Mother Podcast

Dr. Sharon Malone's book is titled "Grown Woman Talk, Your Guide to Getting Healthy and Staying Healthy."  This is a book isn't filled with stats, charts and graphs. It's a book about taking care of oneself and getting support from family, friends and doctors that take the time to recognize you, your symptoms and guide you  in the correct direction until you get the answers that you need.Bertha, Dr. Malone's mother, was born in 1914 in rural Alabama.  Sadly Bertha died when Dr. Malone, her youngest daughter, was twelve.  Out of necessity, Bertha and close relatives had to self diagnose any and all illnesses. There wasn't really any medical services nearby. It was all based on collective knowledge from family members and maybe a midwife who could help out.  It was her family, a few things in a medicine cabinet, home remedies, etc that worked when one of her children was sick. "There was so much of an "ancestral collective of knowledge" that Bertha had access to, that we don't have today," reflects Malone. My guest's mother, Bertha lost her mother when she was 14 and Bertha and her sixteen year old sister had three younger siblings to  raise. It wasn't an easy childhood, but it didn't stop Bertha for instilling such a wealth knowledge in her own children. I highly recommend you read "Grown Woman Talk," to get the full impact of her mother's life and Dr. Malone's philosophies regarding health.Dr. Malone explains, "medicine is not the answer for everything,  but there is also a place and time for it.  Don't run to the doctor every time there's  a sniffle." "She'd like to see the pendulum come back to the middle," regarding the health field.Bertha was a maid in officers quarters of the near by Military base because she had to work. Plus Bertha took care of the work around the house including the cooking, cleaning, etc.Bertha was confident and calm but there are so many stories that Dr. Malone doesn't know about.  In the early 20th century Bertha was very practical and conscientious especially when it came to diet, health and "necessities. Dr. Malone lovingly shares stories of her mother, her work ethic and the moral grounding and how  important it was.  "I still hear her voice in my head.  When I do things I either think of them as either this will make  my mother  proud or my mother would not be  pleased with this particularly behavior."Dr. Malone only had twelve formative years with her mother, but she says "I learned enough about character and what was and wasn't important in life in that short time.  Don't ever doubt the the value and importance of mothers and the effect they have on their children. In those few years, I had enough to be really influenced by her about what kind of woman i wanted to be and what kind of mother I wanted to be."  Allison Kalsched a women's fitness specialist is one of the Co-Founders of NYMMNJ. She was so excited to share the "significance of the community of women" that came together to not only organize this first ever symposium but the respected presenters and the  250 women  that came from near and far to this event.Allison has been working exclusively with women  for about ten years on their fitness and health journey. "The story hasn't changed much, remarks Kalsched, since Dr. Malone's mother was born in the early part of the twentieth century, and everything she (Bertha) learned about women's health was through a symposium of women-the benefits of  being surrounded by women and how we can help one another."  NYMMNJ was put together by a group of women out of the necessity of getting the help they need for their midlife health and wellbeing.  Most of these women had come to Allison for training and they've been through all life changes together.Allison concurs that women some times make things too complicated and tend to put our well being on the back burner. As women age we need to work on our bodies differently than when we were younger. Taking the time  to see a doctor is important, but "we have to think about the woman's body as much more complicated and much more holistic."  Fifty percent of the women who walk in Allison's door complain of frozen shoulder or plantar fasciitis, they are the most common complaints.  Allison believes that mainly these issues of inflammation in  joints are reactions to changes in our hormones " it's all connected." NOT YOUR MOTHER'S MENOPAUSE NJ:Not Your Mother's Menopause NJ is the creation of three Maplewood/South Orange based women who recognized a need for an event such as this. April L McKenzie started the popular Facebook group Perimenopause — It's for Real (now renamed Not Your Mother's Menopause NJ) when she became increasingly frustrated at her own personal experience with finding help for her perimenopausal symptoms. Since the group's founding in 2021, almost 800 women have shared their knowledge, resources and experiences. She has just been voted in as a board member of Let's Talk Menopause, a national nonprofit, where she will grow her involvement in women's health advocacy and menopause awareness.Stacey Futterman Tauriello is the founder of 5 Point Physical Therapy and a pelvic health specialist. After 28 years practicing pelvic health, Stacey (and her patients) were going through hormonal changes that affected their lifestyle in many ways. Allison Kalschedis a women's fitness specialist who has worked in the Maplewood area for over 10 years. As she and her clients have aged together, she became increasingly interested in how the menopause transition affects every system in a woman's body. She is currently studying to become a certified menopause coach. The three of us have come together to help our community forge a path through the information overload about the menopause transition. This event took place for the very first time on January 12, 2025!  More information coming regarding a video of the day long event with all the presenters including Dr. Sharon Malone.DR. Despite what Scarface might lead one to believe, violence was not the dominant characteristic of the cocaine business. It was corruption: the dirty cops, agents, lawyers, judges, and politicians who made the drug world go round. And no one managed that carousel of dangerous players better than Willy Falcon.A Cuban exile whose family escaped Fidel Castro's Cuba when he was eleven years old, Falcon, as a teenager, became active in the anti-Castro movement. He began smuggling cocaine into the U.S. as a way to raise money to buy arms for the Contras in Central America. This counter-revolutionary activity led directly to Willy's genesis as a narco. He and his partners built an extraordinary international organization from the ground up. Los Muchachos, the syndicate founded by Falcon, thrived as a major cocaine distribution network in the U.S. from the late 1970's into the early 1990's. At their height, Los Muchachos made more than a hundred million dollars a year. At the same time, Willy, his brother Tavy Falcon, and partner Sal Magluta became famous as championship powerboat racers. Cocaine, used by everyone from A-list celebrities to lawyers and people in law enforcement, came to define an era, and for a time, Willy Falcon and those like him-major suppliers, of whom there were only a few-became stars in their own right. They were the deliverers of good times, at least until the downside of persistent cocaine use became apparent: delusions of grandeur, psychological addiction, financial ruin. Thus, the War on Drugs was born, and federal authorities came after Falcon and his crew with a vengeance. Willy found himself on the run, his marriage and family life in shambles, the halcyon days of boat races and lavish trips to Vegas and parties at the Mutiny night club seemingly a distant memory. T. J. English has been granted unprecedented access to the inner workings of Los Muchachos, sitting down with Willy Falcon and his associates for many lengthy interviews, and revealing never-before-understood details about drug trafficking. A classic of true-crime writing from a master of the genre, The Last Kilo traces the rise and fall of a true cocaine empire-and the lives left in its wake. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

This Flashback Friday is from episode 245, published last Feb 26, 2012.  Jason interviews author, Amity Shlaes, about her book, “The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression.” Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke of the forgotten man as the man at the bottom of the economic pyramid, the poor man, the homeless man. Miss Shlaes explains that there is another forgotten man, the taxpayer, based on an algebraic description by William Graham Sumner. Jason and Miss Shlaes explore the concept that the Great Depression was man-made, that the Federal government suppressed the economy and the markets, which slowed recovery. A zombie-like economy has ensued in America, very similar to what happened with Japan's economic downfall, which is still recovering two decades later. Miss Shlaes also shares how the collective or community aspect, particularly farms, encouraged and funded by the government, did not work because of bad stewardship – nobody cared about anything because nobody owned anything. In order for people to care and succeed, they must be allowed to own property, own businesses, and own their homes. Amity Shlaes and Jason move on to discuss “The Greedy Hand,” as it refers to taxation. As Miss Shlaes researched the history of The Greedy Hand, she found that Americans initially resisted tax withholding, that it was not just accepted. Over time, taxation has become extremely complex, and the best solution would be to simplify it again. Miss Shlaes also shares her predictions on inflation for 2012. She encourages people to read, to educate themselves and their children. Amity Shlaes is a syndicated columnist for Bloomberg and a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. In addition to writing on political economy, she writes on taxes. She is a contributor to Marketplace, the public radio show. She has appeared on numerous radio and television shows over the years. Miss Shlaes was formerly a columnist for the Financial Times and, before that a member of the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal, specializing in economics. In the early 1990s she served as the Journal's features, or "op ed" editor. Prior to that, she followed the collapse of communism for the Wall Street Journal/Europe. Over the years she has published in the National Review, the New Republic, Foreign Affairs (on the German economy), the American Spectator, the Suddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit. In 2002, she contributed an article on the US tax code to the thirtieth anniversary anthology of Tax Notes, the scholarly journal. Miss Shlaes has twice been a finalist for the Loeb Prize in commentary, her field's best known prize. In 2002, she was co-winner of the Frederic Bastiat Prize, an international prize for writing on political economy. In 2003, she spent several months at the American Academy in Berlin as the JP Morgan Fellow for finance and economy.     Follow Jason on TWITTER, INSTAGRAM & LINKEDIN Twitter.com/JasonHartmanROI Instagram.com/jasonhartman1/ Linkedin.com/in/jasonhartmaninvestor/ Call our Investment Counselors at: 1-800-HARTMAN (US) or visit: https://www.jasonhartman.com/ Free Class:  Easily get up to $250,000 in funding for real estate, business or anything else: http://JasonHartman.com/Fund CYA Protect Your Assets, Save Taxes & Estate Planning: http://JasonHartman.com/Protect Get wholesale real estate deals for investment or build a great business – Free Course: https://www.jasonhartman.com/deals Special Offer from Ron LeGrand: https://JasonHartman.com/Ron Free Mini-Book on Pandemic Investing: https://www.PandemicInvesting.com

On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we look back on a fascinating deep dive with renowned author and peak performance expert Steven Kotler. The conversation centers around Kotler's book, "The Art of Impossible," which explores the intricate relationship between motivation, neurobiology, and the pursuit of extraordinary achievements. This episode will break down the key insights to help you harness your potential and achieve remarkable results. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go.   Understanding Intrinsic Motivation Steven Kotler begins by unpacking the concept of intrinsic motivation, which he identifies as a crucial driver for human performance. He highlights five key elements: Curiosity, Passion, Purpose, Autonomy, and Mastery. These components not only fuel our desire to excel but also enhance our focus and engagement in activities. Kotler emphasizes that these intrinsic motivators are hardwired into our biology, suggesting that when we align our actions with these motivators, we can achieve remarkable results with less effort. Kotler illustrates this point by referencing the neurochemicals involved in passion and love, particularly dopamine and norepinephrine. He recalls the intense focus and attention one experiences when falling in love, noting that this heightened state of awareness comes effortlessly. This natural inclination towards passion and engagement, he argues, is a testament to our biological design, which favors extraordinary achievements.   The Consequences of Not Going Big A striking assertion made by Kotler is that not striving for greatness can have detrimental effects on our well-being. He argues that human beings are inherently wired for extraordinary accomplishments, and failing to pursue big goals can lead to negative outcomes. This perspective challenges conventional views on motivation and success, suggesting that complacency can be harmful. Kotler points out that many of the issues plaguing modern society, such as depression and anxiety, can be linked to a lack of meaningful work and engagement. He identifies eight major causes of depression, two of which—genetics and severe trauma—are often highlighted. However, he emphasizes that these factors account for less than half of the equation. The remaining causes are rooted in our biology and motivation, particularly the absence of work that aligns with our values, passions, and the opportunity for mastery.   The Importance of Meaningful Work One of the most significant insights from Kotler's discussion is the idea that meaningful work is essential for mental health and fulfillment. He explains that when individuals engage in work that lacks curiosity, passion, or autonomy, they are more likely to experience feelings of emptiness and depression. This lack of alignment with intrinsic motivators can lead to a sense of stagnation and dissatisfaction. Kotler argues that the modern workforce often overlooks the importance of these intrinsic motivators, leading to widespread disengagement. He stresses that when people are not allowed to pursue their passions or develop their skills, they miss out on the flow state—a mental state of complete immersion and focus that is crucial for peak performance. To hear more from Steven Kotler and how you can unlock peak performance in your company, download and listen to this episode.   Bio Steven Kotler is a New York Times bestselling author, an award-winning journalist, and the Executive Director of the Flow Research Collective. He is one of the world's leading experts on human performance. He is the author of nine bestsellers (out of thirteen books), including The Art of Impossible, The Future is Faster Than You Think, Stealing Fire, The Rise of Superman, Bold, and Abundance. She challenges conventional beliefs about fulfillment, exposing the myths sold to women around success and freedom, and instead points to a journey rooted in personal alignment and deep internal awareness.
